What irritates me about Phillip is that he had a few very low quality, painfully off key performances and yet got through to the next round on Idol. Why is that? Others are off the minute that happens especially when the judges point that out (which is their job). When it is glossed over by the judges people question what they hear I guess because they think it is good enough to go to the next round. In this day of enhanced singing and autotune it is ok if there is a performance quality or excitement to promote entertainment value, hence the Katy Perry types. I remember the days when all the singers could actually sing. They had bands actually playing music and their voice.

So happy to hear Phillip Phillip’s “Home” played 3 times on the Olympics tonight, during the Women’s Gymnastics.  What a fabulous honor!!!!!!!!!!

O.M.G! It really happened! How amazing for Phillip! And the jump on iTunes is h u g e. #7 right now. Wow! Congrats to Phillip and Jimmy and the gang who made it possible. Couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy. Great song, great interpretation. Holy crap!

Oh, and I just noticed Home broke into the HAC top 20 too, #19 today! What a great day for Phillip… and Interscope. ;)

Phillip has got to be the luckiest dude in the world.  He should play the lottery.  Here is a guy who acted like he didn’t really care if he won Idol or not, then told everyone Home was not representative of the type of music he is putting out - and without any real effort from him, the song is selling like crazy – all because it is simply a really good song and people like it.

I wish nothing but success for Phillip, but I really hope he realizes that the song is what is selling and he doesn’t think everything he puts out in the futue will sell like Home.  But then again, it is Phillip…the luckiest guy in the world…maybe everything he touches will turn to gold.

What’s wrong with RCA? Well, I haven’t understood their decisions earlier on, either.

I’m an average listener and it doesn’t matter a bit to me if other peeps perceive or “know” that someone has pitch problems.  Singing is a whole lot more than hitting the notes correctly (something that a lot of people singing in church do very well).  Being technically proficient doesn’t make one singer better than another if the better singer doesn’t make me sit up and take notice because they don’t have that something “special”…in fact I cringe, more often than not, when that on pitch singer overpowers everyone else but adds very little to the presentation of a song.

I’m not a Phillips fan but I do give him a lot of credit for bringing something “special” to my ears to the table…he saved the last few weeks of season 11 from being an OTT scream fest.

I wonder if Phillip is feeling a little conflicted with all the success “Home” has had. On the one hand, I’m sure he’s thrilled about the $$$ he’s making and that the song is charting so well.

On the other hand, its success is likely  just going to put more pressure on him to put out an album that has songs that are in this same style, rather than the “jazz acoustic” rock he wants to do.

    What’s wrong with RCA?

Fear. It rarely raises an organization’s collective intelligence.

Consolidation from a bunch of major labels down to the current three was supposed to give the majors more power, so they could grab radio by the balls and squeeze. However, radio and all other media consolidated at the same time — and took on huge debt just as revenues were flattening or dropping — so the actual result is that Clear Channel and Cumulus are the official ball-grippers for the music industry. And their potent combo of debt, uninspiring revenues, and competition from alternate forms of radio mean the radio giants are scared and “safe” in their decisions, which means the labels respond by being even more “safe.”

This is how you get people who are bright, entrepreneurial, and love music nonetheless making decisions that are unexciting and not terribly effective. Industrial psychologists study this sort of phenomenon, and not just to point and laugh.

Phillip’s vocal issues weren’t pointed out, but he also had the advantage of some very good instrumental arrangements.  Those arrangements carried the songs.

People complain about AI being dated, but the focus on the productions on Phillip’s songs is about as current and relevant as you can get.  Those arrangements didn’t highlight his weaknesses, and made it seem like he was more aware of who he is than any of the other contestants, and viewers love that. Song production is how so many current artists have become successful, just look at someone like Rihanna.

spinning – I get what you are saying about Phillip – but it’s not true that there was a day that all popular singers could sing really well.  There have been many, many very successful singers that aren’t really technically good singers (Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Buddy Holly, Bob Dylan) that were extremely popular (without autotuning) because they put out really good songs and had a unique sound.

It means very little. Radio DJs/PDs praise songs that they never play all the time..probably because it is in their interest to keep the labels sweet. In addition, any hint of positive feedback is hyped up the the max on idol blogs, and evolves into a meme that radio loves some single or some artist…until nothing happens.

The only positive that fans should take from these things is that the label is promoting and supporting the song.  The reactions from the djs and program directors are meaningless.  Sometimes those reactions take place after the label executive has invited them out to dinner, to a show, or given them some other gift.  The reactions are also a way of ensuring that the executives will continue to be nice to them, and give them nice things.

Cook had the boot song for Season 10, just when Jimmy took over.  That was probably negotiated while RCA was still the mother label.

No, it was negotiated with Simon Fuller, who has always been invested in Cook’s career, and who is now his manager, once again.  Getting that opportunity wouldn’t be about the label, it would the responsibility of the show and artist’s management.

A shame they don’t do that for all their artists.

No all artists are created equal.  This isn’t little league…not everyone gets up to bat and not everyone gets a trophy.  It’s the music business and RCA will put their money (support) where they think it will do the most in term of return on investment.

I wonder if Phillip is feeling a little conflicted with all the success “Home” has had. On the one hand, I’m sure he’s thrilled about the $$$ he’s making and that the song is charting so well.

I doubt he’s making that much money from the song since he’s not a writer credited on it.

I wonder if he’s conflicted because he came out immediately after Idol and said the song wasn’t representative of who he is as an artist.  Does he feel like a sell out pushing a song he doesn’t necessarily like because the machine is telling him he has too or has he come to appreciate what a great song Home is and now feels proud to be associated with it?

The song sounded great when I heard it on the Olympics and it fit so perfectly with the message of the Olympics.

I hope Skylar’s fans come out in droves for her, when the tour hits Jackson, Mississippi! Cause I think they have a young country star in her. She is so meant to sing country, like Reba McIntire. Loved, her  version of “Wind Beneath My Wings” and the emotion she put into the song!

Kris has a song called “Fighters” on the deluxe version of TYC that would be perfect for one of these Olympic bumpers or backstory pieces.  I’m putting it out in the universe that somebody, somewhere had the imagination to pitch it to NBC and they use it.

And often they spent money on who they think will give them a return and it fails and they keep spending money hoping they can throw something out there and it will stick. Money after bad as the saying goes.   Others, they give minimum support because they have to, (due to the Idol contracts)  then throw them to the wolves when they fail.  Big surprise.  It takes money to make money and often the labels just don’t give a damn.  They are always “looking for the next greatest thing” and will sink $$ into a losing proposition and not even try with others.  This business sucks and it amazes me why anyone would want to do it. No special snowflake is immune so get ready for some more drama.
