Are One Direction Complaining About Their Grammy Snub? – “No, you know what? You know what’s more important? Fans, record sales, I’ve always said that,” he told MTV News backstage at “The X Factor” on Thursday night. “Maybe next year they’ll get something.” The guys would have qualified for a Grammy nod or two. Their debut album, Up All Night, along with their two singles, “What Makes You Beautiful” and “One Thing,” met eligibility requirements. So, are the five guys in One Direction as cool-headed about it as Simon is about the apparent snub? He added, “Trust me, they’re not complaining.” – Read more at MTV

I know nothing about X Factor UK, but the headline from Daily Star bothers me a lot. Simon is a business man, so he should decide who he wants to sell as his product. so I see no problem he does not want to try selling product he does not believe in. Why is Louis telling tabloid “The big boss does not believe in so-on-so” before the show is over? It is hurtful. I would have kept my mouth shut if I know some insider info like that.  If his intention is to get people to vote for underdog, he has a strangest way to do it.

This looks like a real amateur undertaking. The World Music Award show as staged in the past and described in the Wikipedia article appears to be defunct.

This event is announced with only 2 weeks notice. According to their facebook the only artists scheduled to appear are Tony Bennett, Gloria Estefan, BOOBA, D’Banj, and Tizziano Ferro. Not much entertainment for a 3 hours show.

Here is a report from local media who can’t figure out what is going on:
    http://blogs.herald.com/scene_in_the_tropics/2012/12/world-music-awards-december-20-at-marlins-park-featuring-headliners-such-as-.html

My guess is someone with money bought the name of the defunct awards and is trying to revive it. However, it looks like they have no skills in promoting a show.

Lee & Kris will be performing 12/11 at the Ronald McDonald House New York for their 4th annual “Make A Difference” event. Then his calendar is clear for the remainder of the year unless he gets some one-off holiday gigs. His touring does not start up again until 1/09/2013.

  • YankeeFan08

I think Adam is scheduled to appear on VH1 Morning Buzz on Tuesday, not Monday.

  • girlygirltoo

It also appears to be purely a fan voted award, with no real significance to whether the artist is selling well worldwide or not.

  • girlygirltoo

It’s news because it is part of his trip to support World Vision’s charity.

He is back in Arkansas now and his only scheduled gig for December is his charity show in NYC on 12/11 for the Ronald McDonald House event.

His 2013 tour starts in early January. He has a bunch of dates lined up for January-April, plus one or two in June.

You can find the info on his facebook events page:

    http://www.facebook.com/KrisAllen/events

Or on his booking agent’s artist page:

    http://www.flemingartists.com/artists/itineraries/ka-itin.html

  • YankeeFan08

So the World Music Awards are fan voted … just like the AMAs, various country music award shows, the People’s Choice awards, etc.  Interesting though that if the nominations are really not based on worldwide sales, there are a lot of other artists who could have been nominated but weren’t.

So some other criteria must have been used in selecting the nominees.

  • Pippygirl

How is it news that Kris Allen is hearding goats in Kenya?

It’s news because it’s the only time the name of an Idol and the phrase “herding goats” have been in the same sentence.

  • jan

I don’t think it matters whether it is fan-voted, sales, or jury. The problem is that this appears to be total hype and perhaps a scam – for the artists, their fans, and anyone who buys tickets.

The past World Music Awards were major events. The local news in Miami isn’t even sure about what is happening with this event. Yet it will be occurring in 2 weeks.

The new Country Weekly cover is a story asking “Where Are All The Women In Country?” The cover features Kelly, Reba, and Carrie, and you can see the cover here.

The story is motivated by Kelly’s controversial nomination for CMA Female Vocalist Of The Year after doing very little during the year in country music other than releasing a “country” version of a pop hit that peaked at #21. The authors agree the problem was there was nobody else to nominate (I don’t agree: Sara Evans did more to earn the nomination though the story ignores her, and I feel like Kellie deserved it on merit despite the lack of commercial success). So, they take a look at the state of women in country music and talk about some newcomers who have the chance to make more of a mark for women in the future. They go through 3 categories of country women and give each one a picture and blurb that summarizes what they’ve done so far in their careers:

    1) Veterans (Reba, Martina, Shania, and Faith each get a blurb)
    2) Currents (Carrie, Taylor, Miranda, Kelly/Kellie: Carrie, Taylor, and Miranda each get a blurb, and Kelly/Kellie get a joint blurb)
    3) Newcomers (Kacey Musgraves, Kelleigh Bannen, Kristen Kelly, and I believe Jana Kramer get blurbs. I don’t remember seeing Lauren in there but it’s been a couple days since I look at the magazine. I would’ve included her but, I think part of the issue is the other ladies are getting current promotion by their labels.)

Carrie’s blurb talks about how she’s been able to keep older country fans happy by not shying away from the country traditions of songs about cheating (like Before He Cheats), drinking (like Last Name), and revenge/murder (like Two Black Cadillacs) while attracting younger fans with her contemporary sound. Carrie’s multigenerational appeal among country fans is something I’m glad people are starting to recognize and try to explain (Country Universe’s founder also pointed this out in his recent review of Carrie’s show in Newark NJ). Carrie’s been connecting the traditional to the contemporary in country in a pretty specific way pretty much since she started out.

The Kelly/Kellie joint blurb gives a little more ink to Kelly, mentioning her duets with Reba and Jason, MKIA, and now her single Don’t Rush with Vince. Kellie’s portion mentions she’s had several hits and how her 3rd album proved she’s country to the core.

I started answering here and then realized how “charty” I was getting. So, I answered you in the numbers thread :)

Jason Scott: I find it rather odd that Miranda isn’t featured on the cover…but Kelly is. Hmm.

May be because Miranda was on a recent cover with Blake (CMA Awards coverage). May be because they were trying to represent a veteran, an established country superstar, and somebody trying to make inroads. May be because they knew it would attract a little attention from a new fanbase and possibly create controversy among CW readers to put Kelly on their cover.

IMO it was mostly because like I said, the motivation for the story was trying to figure out Kelly’s controversial CMA nomination and seeing the lack of other viable female candidates to fill out the 5th spot in the female vocalist category.

I have not seen the article myself but heard Jana was also not mentioned.   Out of that group mentioned none have achieved the level of commercial success  that Jana and Lauren have.  To me it  highlights the problem even if you are having some success as a new country female artist it gets ignored .
All this is not a knock on Kacey, Kelleigh and Kristen they are talented for sure.

I’m not a fan, but she is pretty universally thought of as a very talented and super successful woman who also happens to be pretty smart about the industry.

I certainly never heard her called a “lucky duck”, at the worse she’s been called stiff, bot or country barbie.

Thank you for the correct info on the newcomers featured :) I couldn’t find my copy of the magazine when I posted the summary. The selection is a little strange, especially excluding Jana and also Lauren. I agree with DB987 that part of the problem is when a newcomer female does succeed it goes underrecognized. That being said, Jana’s success has been a little bit of a surprise to me. She’s good, she’s worked hard, and she seems like she’s genuinely country. But, it’d surprise me if she were the next female to really break through. What’s happening with Katie Armiger has become a little bit of a “lather, rinse, repeat” joke because she keeps releasing decent pop/country singles that are heavily advertised in Billboard Country Update and Country Aircheck and they keep going nowhere but, her independent label Cold River Records keeps trying. This has been going on for years. Nobody’s doing anything wrong, I think people are just starting to wonder at what point she has to shake up things up musically a little and try something different.Joanna Smith has a really good single out now and she’s actually the 2nd Sony Nashville act featured. Her single (We Can’t Be Friends) is a slow ballad so I don’t know if it’ll go anywhere. She and Sarah Darling both have undeniably country voices. Sarah Darling has a peppy, sweet country/pop single called Home To Me, and she’s labelmates with Kellie Pickler. I’m happy for them that they got featured. As far as Kacey Musgraves, I think she was being a little jokey about some of her influences. When you listen to her songwriting, there’s NO doubt she’s country through and through and there’s a lot of Texas and alt country running through her blood.

Chicagolaw: Who has ever called her just a “lucky ducK?”  I don’t think I have ever

Oh, I’ve seen what Caro3278sweet is referring to, the idea that Carrie’s lucky she’s country, pretty, and inoffensive because those things are the main reasons why she’s successful. I just think it’s one of those things not worth arguing against because 7 years into her career in a genre of music where women have had a horrible time breaking through let alone sustaining success, we’re at the point where her standing speaks for itself. Besides, everybody who succeeds has been the beneficiary of good luck and good timing and I’m not about to deny that Carrie’s good looks have probably helped on the marketing side. It’s just not all or even most of the story. That’s why I’m glad to see some media starting to notice what Carrie’s done musically to keep her success going: the way she’s taken traditional country themes & combined them with a contemporary sound to keep multiple generations of fans interested. I’d also point out the range of topics Carrie sings about and how she has a way of taking risks without people really noticing. Maybe it wasn’t a surprise how Farmbot Barbie came out of the box with Jesus Take The Wheel but then to turn around and do songs like Before He Cheats, Last Name, and Two Black Cadillacs (and she cowrote Last Name and 2BC)?

  • SaSa8

I too listened to The Opry last night to hear Scotty.  He got a great crowd reception with lots of applause and screams.  He sounded great and sang one of my favorites from his new CD called Christmas in Heaven which is an amazing song with a powerful message.  I saw a tweet from one of the songwriters wives which were in the audience – pretty cool for them I am sure.

  • Caro3278sweet

    Thanks, windmills for chiming in.

I think that coming off AI and being so pretty – well, there was a focus on that in Carrie’s early career. I’m just happy that now peeps are really looking at how she’s combined different influences and pushed country music into a new era. That, to me, is far more interesting and important than her blond hair or her stunning success. That’s what, I believe, will live on as her legacy, long after her blond hair turns grey and she gets wrinkles.

  • mchcat

I thought I heard  the Texas sound in Kacey’s voice.  It is a sound I don’t really care for – kinda flat and monotone.  Pat Green is another one.  I prefer the full Texas sound

You’re welcome.  And thanks for the details on the other women.  I hope so for Kacey Musgrave; I know that now I’ve been reading the Billboard and Aircheck updates that there are a lot of dj’s and pd’s who don’t have any country influences.  Ah, well.
