Idol Headlines for 12/3/12 – The Evening Edition

Steven Tyler’s Nicki Minaj Dis ‘In Jest,’ Ryan Seacrest Says – “”You’ve got the legend of all legends, one of the greatest living singers [in Carey], so you’ve got some incredible perspective,” he said. “Nicki Minaj is a candid and spirited and fashionista-type judge, and Keith Urban, [he's] one of the nicest guys, a singer-songwriter-musician, and then Randy Jackson is the glue that holds it all together.”” – Read more at MTV

Colton Dixon Spills ‘American Idol’ Secrets – “I think they stuck to who I was pretty well,” he said. “There’s always going to be editing to create drama. Besides the initial audition with my sister and I, that was dramatized a little bit. A lot bit. But, it really happened and it was legit. So, it got the watchers latched onto our story which I think helped in the long run. It’s all for a reason, any press is good press.” – Listen to the interview at RadioAlice

The Voice’s Dez Duron on Sex-Symbol Labels, Bieber Covers and ‘Feeling Good’ Comparisons – Few artists on The Voice have worked the stage as hard — or as thoroughly — as Dez Duron. “I’m an entertainer, man. My favorite thing is to sing live. The music just kind of flows through me, and I can’t help but move,” says the Season 3 Top 8 finisher. “I thrive off of the audience response. Former ‘Voice’ Contestant Jamar Rogers Releases New Single Based on Past Meth Addiction – “I’m not trying to be a pop star, I’m too old for that sh–,” Rogers tells The Hollywood Reporter. “Before I sell out and do music that I really don’t believe in, I’d rather just have mediocre sales and do what I love for the rest of my life. That’s what I learned from Cee Lo — if you’re willing to stick to your guns and be as creative as possible, people can’t help but fall in love with your art and your craft. He’s so weird, and we love it!” “I didn’t get to pick not one song! Not one!” Rogers says. “I’m not gonna say I fought Cee Lo, but I definitely raised concerns on every song he picked for me. I didn’t want to confuse the American public; I knew all along that I wanted to make really funky electronic music, and I wasn’t getting those songs.” – Read more at The Hollywood Reporter

CaseyJ and his team raised $14K for St. Jude’s. I believe that was the top team. Rah.

And gad. He’s so comfortable in front of audiences now. The banter, the laugh, the promo. It’s just astonishing how much he’s grown. He would never, ever have been able to do this with the panache he has now – when he was on AI. Not a chance.

And then yah, he’s sexy. Loved the back up music. lol. Why is it that watching a good looking man shaving is actually sexy???

  • girlygirltoo

This is one of the main reasons I have no real interest in The Voice. Jamar was never allowed to perform the kind of music he wants to make as an artist. That seems to be a common theme coming from the ex-contestants of that show.

The type of music he really wants to do sounds cool…if not at all mainstream and probably not very commercial. I’ll have to check out “High” when it comes out on iTunes tomorrow.

On its Facebook, World Vision has a poll on whether we want to see Kris playing soccer with a bunch of Kenyans kids, or trying to walk while balancing bird feed on his head. The poll closes at midnight and the winning video will be announced during tomorrow’s livestream.

I don’t believe I seen anything on the evening addition regarding S.M.

I liked that they used his childhood pictures in the video.

  • merkureye

I called it.  Steven Tyler’s stupid remark about Nicki Minaj sending the kids back to the cornfield just won’t go away.  Of course, Steven, being the fantastic judge he was (not!) “nurtured” young talent and brought the best out of Phillip Phillips . . .delusional!  Steven – you were fired!  Ok?

Now it becomes necessary for Seacrest to do damage control on Tyler’s behalf.  Steven – just admit publicly that you are full of sh*t so you and everyone else can move on.

Does Colton really believe this? I know that it’s a standard for publicists, but it’s not really true.

“It’s all for a reason, any press is good press.”Does Colton really believe this? I know that it’s a standard for publicists, but it’s not really true.

If he ever does an interview where questions are solicited by the interviewer, that’d be a question to ask. Would he consider it “good press” to have tabloids claiming he was in hotel room with an atheist, chanting in Urdu?

I always read Dixon’s interviews because he’s sooooo eager to show that he’s savvy and he’s strategic and he’s in the know and he “gets it” that he’ll over-explain and let slip all sorts of details that the more actually savvy Idols keep mum on, like his audition situation being a bit staged. (I also find that weakness somewhat sympathetic, as I’ve been known to suffer from it myself.)

  • Anny_nanny

I learned from an Colton’s interview about a lot of things that I just didn’t know before. About Colton.
His sister did not pass HW? Can I carve it?

  • TheOther

Colton has a record deal, so he must have done something right to draw attention to himself as a 7th place finisher.  Whereas Josh Ledet, who has been proclaimed the best singer in the last 50 yrs, doesn’t.  Colton also has music out, whereas Jessica Sanchez doesn’t.  Just saying…….

lol I agree. I remember thinking this about Colton when he was sort of doing a public “stream of consciousness” thing in discussing why he felt that his choice of singing a Gaga song was his downfall.

Oh, I’m happy to see I wasn’t the only one that thought Casey shaving was kinda sexy.  Indeed, he has grown and I am happy for whatever success he has.  Wishing him the best!

  • Anny_nanny

Great. Casey should not take off his shirt more (he was such a funny during the season!), only shave.

Oh, Dixon did a ton that was right. He started working with co-writers and ramped up the industry networking within days of being eliminated. His follower-gathering strategy included trying to nab followers outside the Idol bubble and inside Christian youth groups (yeah, I always pound the drum on “followers =/= sales”, but this is a reasonable strategy to try to gain visibility in his own genre). He pretty clearly got Iovine to see him as promotable. He tweets knowledgeably about music, and he’s articulate.

Other people who did similarly (Skylar Laine, say) aren’t necessarily being embraced by TPTB as readily, ’cause it’s not a uniformly fair world. And Dixon still comes out with statements that I personally consider kinda douche-y (though less than he used to). But he’s clearly very bright and focused, and he can speak the language of label suits. Honestly, I find him much more entertaining and appealing as a newbie professional musician than as a TV show contestant.

  • tripp_ncwy

It also helps that Core Media open a division to specifically work with the country & Christian artists it manages.

  • fuzzywuzzy

“Oh, Dixon did a ton that was right. He started working with co-writers

I think that started long before he was elminated, even dating back to when he was eliminated the first time during the “green mile” episodes of the previous year. Colton mentioned having made contacts back then and pursuing a career in CCM, so the guy was definitely motivated and ambitious long before he was brought back to Idol the following year.

  • justmefornow

Daughtry’s wife and Colton are friends and follow each other on twitter and have been, long before this year, since A10. He was promoted by her during this past season as well. I think they share some religious affiliation.
He had, and has plenty of contacts in the Christian music community. That’s why I think along with P2 he will probably be the only other successful music seller from this past season.

(And for the record, I still can’t stand that whiny annoying voice, but others apparently do, lol).

  • girlygirltoo

It will be interesting to see how well Colton does in the CCM community. His single is doing ok on the charts, but not great. He was very lucky to get hooked up as an opener on that tour he’s going out on next year — that should really help him get a good footing in his chosen market.

He has done an excellent job of building contacts and reaching out to younger people who are CCM fans but I wonder if he will appeal to the older CCM community. I know nothing about this genre, since I’m not at all religious and don’t listen to Christian music, but I am intrigued to see how he does. Mandisa has done very well, but her style is basically the exact opposite of Colton’s. Jason Castro has had some success, but again, his style isn’t really anything like Colton’s. So there’s not really any other Idol to compare him to here.

  • http://twitter.com/ClaudeDee Claude Dee

Sorry but Jessica’s music will be out next year. Because she has a rumored solo concert in the Philippines and of course the GLEE appearance that will help her build her career.

  • halo9125

Whomever is styling Jessica ought to be shot. That thing on her head is less than attractive.
