Fox Reality Channel to shut down next year

The all-reality cable network, Fox Reality Channel, is expected to end its four-year run next March, according to the Los Angeles Times (and originally reported by The Wrap). News Corp. launched Fox Reality Channel in May 2005 during the height of primetime reality programming, but the channel, which was available in approximately 50 million homes, never caught on.

Fox is considering launching a new channel in its place. ‘With the changing cable landscape, we’ve made a strategic decision to shift some resources and refocus on emerging channels,’ said a Fox spokesman in a statement. ‘However, Fox Reality Channel will remain on our lineup for at least the next several months.’ The channel aired original content as well as reruns of reality programs such as The Amazing Race and So You Think You Can Dance.

Leona Lewis ‘punched’ at signing

Police have arrested a man over an alleged assault on 2006 X Factor winner Leona Lewis at a book signing.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said police were called to Waterstone’s book store at Piccadilly, London, but Lewis did not need hospital treatment.

Lewis’s spokesman said the singer had been signing autographs for around 90 minutes when “a guy came up and punched her to the side of the head”.

The spokesman added that Lewis was “understandably badly shaken”.

The top-selling American Idol-related album this week comes from the contemporary Christian music field. The WOW Hits 2010 compilation, which made its debut selling more than 14,000 copies, features Mandisa’s My Deliverer and Phil Stacey’s You’re Not Shaken.

Blake Lewis’ Heartbreak on Vinyl also makes its debut this week, coming it at #135 on Nielsen SoundScan’s Top 200 and selling a little bit more than 4,000 units. Blake did proportionally better on the digital side: Downloads accounted for more than a quarter of his sales, and Heartbreak came in at #89 on the SoundScan digital albums chart.

Who Is Max Martin? A Hitmaking ‘Beast’

Max MartinSure, it was Katy Perry who kissed a girl and Britney Spears who sang “Livin’ in sin is the new thing,” but the words are actually those of Max Martin, a 38-year-old Swedish producer that some would argue is the biggest pop songwriter in the world.

“He was the guy who ushered in teen pop being more like a form of creative expression,” Ann Powers, pop music critic for the L.A. Times tells PopEater. “Look at [producers] Stargate, Ryan Tedder — they wouldn’t exist without Max or the success he had. There’s been a huge shift in the 21st century towards appreciating mainstream pop and I would base that as a shift to when Max Martin started

Adam Lambert: The Jewish Mother Interview

‘There are thousands of women of a certain age out there who are just one Adam Lambert Google search away from crashing their computers,’ Newsweek’s Joan Raymond wrote in a June blog titled Why Cougars Crave Idol Runner-Up Adam Lambert. ‘The good news is that people who know about these things think that our little Lambert love-fest is downright mentally healthy.’

Carrie Underwood’s holiday special: I vote for more duets, fewer skits. You?

Happy holidays, PopWatchers, and don’t tell me it’s too early for dropping yule bombs, yo! You can already smell the imminent death of Halloween ‘” and the chemical scent of fauxflakes ‘” at my local Duane Reade, which means that Santa’s on his way. (He’s loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh.) (Sorry. Had to go there.)

Anyway, since you’re going to be waking up Saturday morning to find your next-door neighbor out on her front lawn setting up her Nativity scene, we might as well discuss Fox’s announcement this week that Carrie Underwood: An All-Star Holiday Special is coming to the network on Monday, Dec. 7, featuring living legend Dolly Parton, Brad Paisley, and (yes, yes, y’all!) David Cook. Generally, I’m pretty excited by this news: Much like garlic, the addition of Dolly Parton makes almost every dish a little tastier, and of course, anyone who’s seen the epic duet of ‘Go Your Own Way’ embedded below knows the kind of magic Carrie and Cookie can generate when they pass the mic.

My Interview with Dreamgirls Star Syesha Mercado

I interviewed Syesha Mercado over the phone today! She was so nice!

Syesha is currently rehearsing for the touring production of Dreamgirls where she plays Deena Jones (played by Beyonce in the film). The show opens at the Apollo Theater on Nov. 7 and will tour around the country until June 2010.

I was quite nervous leading up to the interview because as I understand it, Syesha had some issues with some stuff I had written about her in my blog last year. I started off by apologizing to her for anything I had posted that may have offended her, and she responded that ‘we have no drama.’ She said that she didn’t even know what the fuss was about even when people were tweeting her about it. As far as she’s concerned, she loves everyone. Yay! We love you too Syesha!

Sleep Eating Disorder? Paula Abdul Says Kara DioGuardi Raided Her Fridge

Kara DioGuardi has become a household name since becoming the fourth judge on “American Idol” last year, but her former co-star Paula Abdul wants us all to remember one thing – she was the one who discovered the songwriter-turned-reality star ten years ago. But having lived with DioGuardi, Abdul also discovered the musician suffered from an interesting eating issue.

“I literally discovered Kara and believed in her, we had lunch together and I told her that if she wants to give two weeks notice, I would move a stranger into my own home. She lived with me and we became the best roommates, we never fought, except she would sleep walk and eat,” Abdul told Tarts after announcing the AMA nominations on Tuesday morning. “I’d wake up in the morning and I thought ‘did my dog do this?’ There was food on the ground. ‘What the heck?’ I thought. But she would have no recollection that she did it.”

    MJ, have fun!

Said it yesterday – that “Jewish Mother interview” is one of my alltime fav Adam interviews!

Interesting of all the signers who work with Max Martin, they mention Adam and Carrie as people likely to have future hits. I still would not be surprised if a Adam-Max Martin track was the first single.

Obviously, Martin is happy to remain in the background, churning out hits. “He’s a beast,” Wolf says. “He takes his work very seriously. He never stops.” Fans shouldn’t expect the run to stop anytime soon, as he is collaborating with Adam Lambert and Carrie Underwood. “He definitely has the ability to tailor a song to a specific artist,” Hancock says. “When you hear a Max Martin record, you don’t necessarily say it’s a Max Martin record, you say it’s a Kelly Clarkson smash.”

Thanks for posting the Max Martin video.

‘I think more women would be happier if they channeled their inner 14-year-old girls once in a while.’

Lambert, Berman believes, somehow manages to be ‘hardcore, crazy, humble, adorable, charismatic, sweet and mind-blowingly talented,’ all in one package. ‘He’s a study in contrasts, and the gay thing doesn’t matter,’ she says. ‘Anyone who can get women to talk, giggle and get their mojo back is fine by me.’ ’ ¨

I loved this quote in Gail’s The Jewish Mother Interview and I so agree with Dr. Berman’s philosopy. And I’ll extend this sentiment to all of the “mother” fans out in idol land who really like their fav whether it be Adam, Kris, the Davids, or Danny.

It’s just fun to “adore” some one from afar and to get hyped about their struggles and achievements, and the best part is that I’m not, in reality, attached to these guys so their missteps, though they may make me cringe, don’t impact me like the “real” people in my daily life.

I think that having this outlet im my life helps me cope with all the things I am going through…since it brings in tons of emotion without the abject stress those emotions may cause. So long live us “Idol” moms and may all our kids (the girls too) get the success they deserve.

One of the hosts made a comment about Kris and the Script being in a tug-of-war to see who would sing LLWD. Kris made a comment kinda under his breath or very low that he would win. The complaints would fall on deaf ears at the FCC, since there is no FCC regulation against outing someone on national TV. (That I’m aware of anyway.)

It’s called slander if it is untrue and you can be sued for that. In Britain Jason Donovan successfully sued the style magazine The Face for libel after they suggested he was gay, although it turned out to be a pyrrhic victory because it badly damaged his own career for years (because the hip crowd sympathised with the magazine). I think it is easier to sue for slander/libel in the UK than the US because, among other things, there is no First Amendment in the UK. But even without the threat of being sued, outing someone is generally something most broadcaster won’t do even in the States, considering that so many people well-known to be gay by other people in the entertainment business were never exposed in their life time.

It’s a tricky minefield anyway. Perhaps because it is easier to sue here, people on TV are generally wary of naming well-known people for whatever they may be. There was the case of Ulrika Johnson who claimed she was raped by a TV personality but refused to name him. Someone else however name the rapist (perhaps accidentally, perhaps not) as John Leslie, and John Leslie’s TV career effectively ended there and then. There is a similar case with Katie Price (AKA Jordan) just recently claiming to have been raped by a TV celebrity – his name is apparently known by some people, but no one yet dared publish it. Hard to know if her allegations are true.

Is it the usual practice for artists to not get paid for appearing at charity events like this? Just wondering’ ¦

Yes, it is typical to both not get paid and to pick up all the expenses.

Also, most opening acts do not get paid and have to pick up their expenses. Thankfully, the 19R/Jive is paying for all this stuff (out of future profits — of course).

Kris has a banner ad on allaccess.com now. Outside of the ad I saw on iTunes, I think this is the first advertising I’ve really seen for the single

Is it the usual practice for artists to not get paid for appearing at charity events like this? Just wondering’ ¦

Yes. It is the usual practice.

    1) Record label pays for concert costs.
    2) Artists perform for free.
    3) Radio station pockets ticket and sponsorship revenue.
    4) Radio station spins artists song.

Why do you think the Bosom Ball station in Cinci and the station in Chicago doing the Fray concert where two of the first to spin his record? It’s not because the DJs voted. They may love an artist anyway, but that’s not why the artist does the free concert and that’s not why the song gets added and played. It’s a business. The point of a radio station is to sell its airtime and generate revenues.

  • Trina

That’s a great ad on All Access. Jive should be bragging about being the 2nd most added this week and the massive Z100 support, but personally I would have left the download numbers off YMMV.

Finally, clarification on what will run with MJ’s TII – it will be part of the a special 2012 trailer. Still can’t confirm whether the TfM MV will be released before this special trailer or not. From MovieWeb:

ADAM LAMBERT AND MICHAEL JACKSON TO SHARE MOVIE SCREENS

American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert’s “Time for Miracles” video will receive the big-screen treatment as part of the trailer for Roland Emmerich’s doomsday movie 2012, which will precede screenings of the Michael Jackson documentary This Is It beginning October 28, Lambert told MTV News Tuesday. The single is due to be released on October 18 in advance of the November 24 release of Lambert’s first post-Idol CD. In the video, he said, “I’m just walking through looking straight at the camera singing the song, and there’s a riot going on around me — people being tossed in front of me, looting, you know, people being arrested. … That was pretty wild, to try to stay focused on the song while that was happening.” The goings-on, he said, was intended to be “reminiscent of what happens in 2012.”

With the weakness in the rock music business ‘” bet Daughtry is considering doing some country-crossover music.

The rock music business is weak because they keep spitting in the eye of up and coming rockers. Daughtry and Cook, to name two. Funny enough, some old school rockers have reached out to them, as Van Zandt has to Cook but the industry, itself, is rock snob central…. So, good for Chris! Do what you have to do!

I know if is just an Examiner poll and that Archie fans know how to vote but the result of this one was too amazing to pass on:

David Archuleta vs. Bob Dylan: Christmas and hearts in two new albums (Poll)

Which Christmas album are you interested in?
Christmas From The Heart by David Archuleta 97% (1,686 votes)
Christmas In The Heart by Bob Dylan 2% (28 votes)
I want both of them! 1% (12 votes)
    Neither. 1% (16 votes)
    Total Votes: 1,742

Have you listened to Bob Dylan’s album? It’s no contest! YMMV, of course. Here’s what one reviewer said about it…

Okay, the Bob Dylan Christmas album is definitely worth listening to, but it might scare the children. Bob sounds like he’s singing with the chestnuts roasted on the open fire in his mouth. Each breath/gasp for breath also seems like it could be his last. Do I still love it? Kind of! (Although it sort of comes off like a spooky Halloween album.) Feast your ears on these samples. (Send the kids out of the room first.)

    Q3,
Maybe Jive is satified with the numbers so far? They might have a game plan that we may not understand but is working for them.

  • girlygirl

    Alaadam

Haven’t looked at the charts yet. It’s possible Kris fell out of the Top 100 if you didn’t see him on there, though. I will go look at them now.

Okay, it looks like he’s not in the Top 100. Which sucks. But I’m confused, because he was #89 last week, right? But when I clicked on the link for the biggest falls on the chart, he wasn’t on that list either, even though the last song on that chart dropped 10 spots, which is fewer than LLWD would have dropped if it’s no longer in the Top 100. Maybe it only lists the biggest falls by songs that are still in the Top 100? IDK.

Anyway, not good. I thought the extra airplay would balance out the drop in sales, but I guess not. Maybe it will re-enter the charts next week, now that he got all those new station adds.

  • Q3

Q3: With the weakness in the rock music business ‘” bet Daughtry is considering doing some country-crossover music.

I think that Daughtry doing some country-crossover work would be a great move.

Sassycatz: The rock music business is weak because they keep spitting in the eye of up and coming rockers. Daughtry and Cook, to name two. Funny enough, some old school rockers have reached out to them, as Van Zandt has to Cook but the industry, itself, is rock snob central’ ¦. So, good for Chris! Do what you have to do!

Rock has been declining in music market share since the mid-1990′s — due to the rise of urban/Hip-Hop/Rap and the increased popularity of Pop music. Long before anyone every thought of Daughtry or Cook.

googletot: Apparently he can’t make it in the rock music business since his sales have fallen flat.

Rock-Country crossovers are as old as rock music. In 1940s and 1950s Rock and Roll, Rhythm and Blues, Gospel and Country Music were all intertwined. Most famous Rock-Country-Gospel crossover artist is probably Elvis.

Frankly, I am hoping that maybe rock artists being involved with Country music can get some of the rock artists back to the core driving force of rock again and crush the heinous drek currently masquerading as Rock — like Nickelback. Of couse, my hope may be overoptimistic based on the Bon Jovi single — but maybe the new album will be better. YMMV.

I agree. Top 40 adds and #1 sales are both good headlines to bring out LLWD and Kris’ name. To me, the former is more like an ads or recommendation, while the latter is more like a consumer’s choice. imo the latter has more influence on purchase decision making. But of course, to get #1 sales, a song needs to be heard by large enough music buyers. So let’s give LLWD and Jiva some time.

Aww, too bad about Adam only being on by phone on Oprah, and even worse that it couldn’t be closer to the actual album launch – which was my big hope (though with a gig like Oprah, you definitely have to take what you can get!) Still, ideal situation would have been for him to appear on her show the week before the album drops.

As for Billboard – I just checked too. I didn’t see Kris on the Hot 100. He was in the 70′s (iirc) last week, and this week seemed to have weaker download sales, and though a lot of stations have added LLWD, I don’t know that spin numbers have increased enough (yet) to keep him on the chart.

But I think with the PR campaign ramping up for him officially now, everything will still be ok for him.

Loved this interview too. My 14-year-old daughter is kinda horrified at her mother’s “obsession” with Adam (she prefers Kris) and said with some relief, after I expressed concern that he’d produce “Lady Gaga”-type music, “Oh, so you feel like his mother.” Yes, dear.

LLWD was on the Billboard Top 100 last week. I think at #89. It’s not good that it dropped off this week, but as I said earlier, maybe the increased adds from the radio stations and some more promotion will get it back on there for next week. We’ll see.

(I have no idea why the charts always say for the week of…then give a date almost 2 weeks later. That makes no sense to me)

  • Truthiness

So far the adds on radio aren’t driving sales of LLWD (now at #141 on iTunes) ‘” I hope the upcoming Kris appearances help push the song back up the charts

Well it is only two days since it’s been added, so I think that it’s a bit early to say that radio play isn’t going to help Kris’s iTunes sales numbers. I say give it a week or two. Or even more, as has been discussed, things that are tops on the charts now, can take a while to have gotten there. So I’m hopeful that all this increased radio play will have an effect sooner than later, but it’s still not unsual to take awhile.

  • suebrody

Well, with R/L intruding, I have been waaay out of the loop these days! (And maybe I still have adam storm fatigue ;) )

So here are a few thoughts:

I was also duped by negative neil/positive neil, but it was kind of interesting to see the tweets (of course I tweeted–once–and then sort of waited to see what would happen).

That interview about the AMAs is great. I used to watch Jai, but I didn’t recognize him or realize he and Adam were friends! (Now I have to follow him, of course. ;) ) LOL on the gloves. It is a bit ironic that he wears them and of course they were MJ’s trademark. (Not our MJ, but I hope the conference is a blast!)

I posted this yesterday, but the American Jewish (Jewish American?) article was one of my favorites. Yes, the author was a fangirl (secret autograph, LOL), but the questions were interesting; I hadn’t heard some of them before. I am also a Diet Jew! I loved that she asked about his parents, b/c it wasn’t tabloid stuff, it was just about what his family life was like, and that clearly meant a lot to him. His parents are rad.

I agree: Everyone seems pretty starstruck by Adam, and he in turn seems just so happy to part of this and is just having a blast! (He reminds me of a young kid in a toy store, who gets to take him his favorites but shares them w/ his friends and siblings!) I hope he never become a diva (unlikely). When you think of all the years he put into this, and how horribly he was often treated (especially by the bastards at Wicked), you are even more excited for him.

I don’t have time to get into some heavy-duty discussions. I just want this all to work out for Adam, Kris, and Allison. And I hope this works out for Alisan, b/c she is such a good friend of Adam’s (Aimee Mayo has apparently disappeared).

I didn’t get a chance to ask Adam an Oprah question (I don’t have anything new to ask, anyway), but I can’t wait to see the show. I just want TFM and TBD (the 1st single) to be released already! I need new Adam music!

I can’t believe I haven’t heard LLWD locally yet (on the radio), but hopefully soon. I am not sure Allison’s will get played; I think it’s a bit too popish, at least for the stations I listen to.

Off to listen to Kris’s interview.

  • saga

Aww, too bad about Adam only being on by phone on Oprah

Still not in person, so that sucks. But still, I wasn’t expecting any kind of Oprah appearance, so it’s still cool for Adam. Though honestly, totally not as cool or good for him as performing and/or talking to Oprah live would have been. No chance for that interaction that Oprah watchers probably like so much.

  • ilovekrisallen39

I can’t wait for video and pictures. Kris singing Brittney, happy B.Day. LLWD live for the first time. Doing what every the name from the dance, and playing the viola. Sounds like alot of fun. I agree- last week I checked out the top 5 on Itunes and 2 of the songs have been slow builders. One was released back in July ( Fireflies) and the other in August ( Whatcha Say)

Is Adam going to be on Oprah today, or later on?

  • Kirsten

(I have no idea why the charts always say for the week of’ ¦then give a date almost 2 weeks later. That makes no sense to me)

Billboard magazine pre-dates the internet. In the old days, there wasn’t even direct-to-print. They would have to create plates for every page and then truck the magazine out to the stores from a central printing place. The process probably took a couple of days to a week to manage. Who wants a crummy chart dated two weeks ago? Better to just date it two weeks in the future when people will finally get to read it.

Also agree that maybe keeping how many downloads it has would be good. That is a site targeted more to people in the industry, yes? So they would definitely have a pretty good idea of what a good number of downloads would be.

Yes, AllAccess is targeted at the industry. You can tell that if you read their articles. They would definitely know what a good number of downloads would be. IDK, maybe Jive is totally playing the “New Artist” angle. 40K is impressive for the amount of spins he’s currently getting. Not great for an Idol, but great for a new artist. I noticed they didn’t mention American Idol.

Anyway, it’s nice to see an ad.

  • Hazehel

The Eagles have always had a country rock vibe.

They were country rock, always have been. They were in fact the biggest country rock act, one of those that helped popularise this genre. I don’t think anyone who listened to Lyin’ Eyes can called it anything but country rock. They were closely associated at the beginning with other country rock people like Linda Ronstadt and Jackson Browne.

I have great faith in Kris and think his album will sell. And in total, I think 19M has done a good job marketing Kris. I have less confidence in the 19R/Jive marketing/promo efforts.

I do not believe LLWD is going to be a big hit, but it should be selling better than it is.

I will not cut Jive a break until they get their act together in marketing of LLWD. Setting aside the dubious choice of this as Kris’ lead single — and I know that many people think its a great choice, OK YMMV. What has Jive done right?

    1. The released the song with unclear communication on a Friday — no PR, multiple dates given to the press, MTV News had the release date as the following Tuesday.

    2. The put LLWD out with the Graphic cover that looked like it came from Hi-Fi Records or some other low-budget indie house. Then they released a new cover (much better!) 2 weeks later.

    3. They have got Kris some top appearance slots but didn’t properly prep him. His PR folks should have done this — it is their job.

    4. They didn’t preempt the two potential issues with LLWD — the previous The Script release (could have handled it with a press release or clearly thought out interview story) — and the first line (which they should have changed the lyrics to avoid the jokes).

    5. They are getting the single radio adds but that is just a matter of money — were is the PR/promo campaign? They are spending money but nothing seems to be getting traction.

When 19R/Jive does something right, I’ll be the first one to comment and say “Bravo”. Here’s hopign I get to type that comment soon!

  • suebrody

Chris said he wanted his album to be more country; I don’t really hear it, except for one tune, Tennessee Line. It’s not a bad song, but it isn’t one of my favorites on the album, either. I wouldn’t mind him going a little more that route and a little less Nickelback. And yes, the Eagles were completely country rock (to wit: Take it Easy). I remember someone last year (EW?) said Cook’s My Last Request sounded a bit country, but I still don’t think so.

Adam is on Oprah Friday, I believe. If not, it’s still TBD (just like his album and song ;) ).

Kris’s radio interview was cute, and I think his dry sense of humor and personality came out a bit more than in other interviews I’ve heard. But I must say I worry for him when he says that he’d rather not be talked about at all than be gossiped about.

While his self-effacing, low-key personality is part of his charm, I think an artist seeking to establish himself in the music industry needs to recognize the importance of generating buzz.

While AI has given Kris a fabulous opportunity for exposure, it is certainly no guarantee of success. At this stage of his career, being overly humble and trying to avoid the spotlight is not the way to go. Enthusiasm is contagious, and right now, it’s in some measure up to Kris to generate excitement about his work. Right now, I’m just not seeing it, and that’s unfortunate, because he is obviously talented and loves creating music and I’d like to see him be successful.

“I agree- last week I checked out the top 5 on Itunes and 2 of the songs have been slow builders. One was released back in July ( Fireflies) and the other in August ( Whatcha Say)”

It never seem fair to me to compare any Idol single to truly new artists like Owl City and the Whatcha Say guy (whose name I can’t remember).Their songs made it the old fashioned way w/o the benefit of the biggest show on TV. No name recognition for these artists at the beginning at all. So it makes sense that their singles took months to climb the charts.

I think it’s more realistic to compare Idol debut singles to each other. The song to compare LLYD to is Tattoo by Jordin. That also started slowly and built its sales on radio play.

I think Kris doesn’t want to be gossiped about. He likely wouldn’t mind being talked about as long as the focus was on his music. He wants to keep his private life private. Nothing wrong with that. Much better than having paparazzi invading your life.

And OMG, that video of Archie doing the Wigalow at Seton HS last year was too funny. The SCREAMS! Yikes. Why do I have a feeling Kris’ attempt at the Wigalow will end up looking like that awkward chicken dance of his?

    5. They are getting the single radio adds but that is just a matter of money

It has long been illegal to pay money to radio stations for adds. Sure, artists will offer to do free PR concerts, but the darn song still has to meet their standards. If my mother offered them money to play the crap out of her song and feature her in a concert, I’m quite reasonably certain the station would say “NO”. I love the lady, but she can’t sing and stations without listners aren’t going to be in the biz for very long.

If all it took was money, record labels wouldn’t have to try so hard to find a hit.

‘” were is the PR/promo campaign?

There is an ad on AllAccess and he’s getting airplay. Airplay is PR. The AllAccess ad is intended to increase airplay. Airplay typically does a good job of generating sales. He’s also doing concerts for radios which again, increases airplay. He’ll hit the television shows when his CD comes out. I don’t see what they are doing as being all that unusual from what is typically done for all artists.

I still think something went wonky with an earlier photo-shoot (probably Kris being sick and looking like something the cat dragged in) and that’s why we are seeing these cover shots so late.

They are spending money but nothing seems to be getting traction.

I’d call getting 37 ads this week on radio to be gaining some traction. If you consider that Jive had the 1st and 2nd most added songs this week, they are doing something right.

  • Q3

Based on the best info I can find Adam’s appearance will be via satelite or Skype video conference and will be recorded on Friday. Air date not released. That means it is not audio phone. Several Adam fans have reported being interviewed about questions they want to ask Adam and being told they are in the first few rows and may get to ask a question. That sounds like an entire Adam show — or at least a major segment.

    jersey
Actually, Kirsten, you might be right. People that don’t follow AI would totally think Adam won. Maybe being ‘who’ (tm VFTW) will help Kris here! LOL

I don’t think that’s really true — I think SuBo and Adam are the two most famous #2′s in the world. SuBo is probably more famous that Adam!

I would agree, if you are evaluating Kris’s success as an American Idol winner. However, if you are evaluating his success as a musician, then it makes more sense. It really all depends on what is meant by ‘success’.

I agree to a point. I think when it comes to singles you can compare idols to each other relative to the first few week’s worth of sales. But in terms of gaining airplay… I don’t think idol comes into it too much. PDs don’t add idols just because of who they are. The song has to be good. Then an audience have to respond to it. If only idol fans request that usually won’t make much of a difference.

  • Studio57

I think it’s more realistic to compare Idol debut singles to each other. The song to compare LLYD to is Tattoo by Jordin. That also started slowly and built its sales on radio play.

I’m gonna have to ( respectfully) disagree with you here jpfan. For whatever reason, AI/ Kris fans were not there to buy his first single. The same can be said for Jordan. Fans inside the AI bubble buy the record when it comes out or buy the whole album. As far as their debut single, they are starting off like any new artist, IMHO. Another case in point- Clay Aiken. His first week sales for his album were phenominal because of his fan base, but his first single I think only made it to #37 on billboard.

  • jpfan

Kris sounds really good doing the single.

Kristen – good catch on the AllAccess ad. No mention of Kris winning Idol at all. Maybe Idol is a turn off to radio, who knows.

Kris is starting off like any new artist who 30 million people saw win a talent show on America’s biggest TV show. Now does that affect radio. Yes, if he puts out a song that fits the genre of a particular stations. You’d think coming of Idol would be seen as a good thing these days – Kelly, Jordin, Daughtry, Carrie are all huge on radio.

  • Truthiness

The Seton HS stuff by Kris sounds great! Viola playing, “Hit Me Baby One More Time,” and first live performance of LLWD. ETA: dang those kids are good. Hope we get some good and full ones.

I am confident sales of LLWD will follow increased spin count. That’s the way it works. I’ve been watching the spin counts, and they’ve been increasing steadily almost every day. Yesterday his spins were over 100 for the first time, and that will build on itself. (But JFC, come on West Coast, add the song!).

I’m very happy to hear about the All Access ad, and yesterday Samantha Ronson featured LLWD as her Twitter song of the day, with a link to iTunes (thank you!), not just a link to YouTube. I hope to see an iTunes banner in the next couple of weeks as the spins pick up.

The song is and will continue to catch on. Once the music video is released, it will garner even more attention. This is all building toward the CD release, and I do agree with Kirsten that Kris being so sick at the tail end of the tour probably fouled up a few things, not the least of which was likely a photo shoot for the single cover.

  • Sassycatz

Rock has been declining in music market share since the mid-1990′s ‘” due to the rise of urban/Hip-Hop/Rap and the increased popularity of Pop music. Long before anyone every thought of Daughtry or Cook.

Well, naturally, I’m not blaming the decline of rock music on the fact that Daughtry and Cook have had trouble getting on rock radio or being covered by the rock press — whatever that is. They’re just examples because this is a site that follows Idol. What I am saying is that rock music can be very unwelcoming to newcomers. Country does well because it’s very accepting and so more new artists are turning to it just to get someone to listen to them. A style of music can’t be reinvigorated if you keep ignoring or dissing the next generation of artists.

I think the concern that is being expressed concerning Kris is a result of the dynamics of the winner/runner up situation as opposed to any fault of Kris, his PR team or Jive and the fact that, apparently, Kris’ core fan base isn’t as active as the David fans were last year.

When you have a very extensive fan base and very active fan sites like David A. had and has they were and are very good at getting the word out for a single release, appearances, radio shows, etc. This core base really propelled the sales for “Crush” the first few weeks…in truth the sales have been much better than his airplay would have ever indicated. Kris’ fans, as far as I can tell, don’t seem to have this rabid need to promote their guy via twitter or text or fan sites or bombarding online sites to let peeps know Kris’ single is out there. Hence, he does seem to be “coming out” much more like a new Artist than an Idol winner.

Also, there has been so much going on about the runner up, this year, that it seems that Kris isn’t getting the roll-out that he deserves. But, so far, it looks like Jive and his management are virtually carbon copying the roll-out that Archie had last year..including the trip to Seton High.

I’ll also agree that great guy that Kris is and wonderful singer that he is, Kris just isn’t a media magnet. He’s married, Christian, low-key, small town boy who sings with a guitar. As much as we feel it may be unfair..it’s the reality. Music, especially pop music, is an industry where the persona of its stars often over-shine their talent and skills. It’s a lot harder to market “safe”…just ask the Archie and Jordin teams.

  • Trina

Wow he does sound good doing LLWD live. I was afraid that was going to be a difficult song to sing live, or that he would get out of breath doing the chorus ha!

I find nothing wrong with what Jive is currently doing right now. Major TV promo isn’t going to happen until closer to the album release since they’ll want to push that along with the actual song. He got good ads this week and the biggest radio station in the country is spinning the crap out of it. Now it’s just a matter of waiting to see if the general public latches on to it.

  • Mtlfan

Kris sounds great doing LLWD live. Looking for the full song..

I wonder who is the other guitarist with Kris?

  • BestAI

I don’t think that’s really true ‘” I think SuBo and Adam are the two most famous #2′s in the world. SuBo is probably more famous that Adam!

Exactly. If articles are written with AI attached to Adam, it always says runner-up. If anyone knows about Adam, they will know his status. It only seems like Adam was the winner because he has been getting so much industry buzz, and Kris not so much.

  • BeckyMD

Thanks for bringing over the video(s) of Kris’s LLWD performance… nice to see him on stage doing his thing :) . I really like the song, and love his voice.

  • Q3

Q3: They are spending money but nothing seems to be getting traction.

Kirsten: I’d call getting 37 ads this week on radio to be gaining some traction. If you consider that Jive had the 1st and 2nd most added songs this week, they are doing something right.

By traction, I mean sales. Not radio adds. Kris won American Idol, Jive is supporting the single, it will get radio adds.

Kirsten: If all it took was money, record labels wouldn’t have to try so hard to find a hit.

Radio airplay doesn’t mean a hit song. And, in fact, I believe that radio airplay is becoming less important to driving sales everyday. TV is also important and the Internet is growing in importance everyday.

And regarding getting radio airplay, we all know it has to be soft dollars, but dollars and promo are involved — even for Britney Spears — #1 this week in radio adds. (But if “3″ didn’t pick up adds, that would have been news since it’s #1 BB).

Kirsten: I still think something went wonky with an earlier photo-shoot (probably Kris being sick and looking like something the cat dragged in) and that’s why we are seeing these cover shots so late.

Who knows why they used that graphic cover for the first few weeks. I think that it could just as easily been a later idea or a scheduling screw-up. The single graphic was released by 9/21 — the day they did the cover photoshoot at Snug Harbor:

SnugHarborCCBG: For all you American Idol fans, 2009 winner Kris Allen was here in Snug Harbor’s Music Hall yesterday for a photo shoot for his new album!!!
6:11 AM Sep 22nd from web

No matter what caused it, I think that they would have sold more units of this single if it had the great new packaging featured in all the initial PR. It was a missed opportunity to brand Kris as an artist. And not to have the face of the American Idol Winner on his first real single is a big miss in my book.

  • tinawina

Kris is starting off like any new artist who 30 million people saw win a talent show on America’s biggest TV show. Now does that affect radio. Fair enough. I really don’t know if AI makes PDs take an extra look at them. It probably does, because at least there’s some concept of who they are as opposed to a faceless CD coming from the usual suspects. So perhaps it helps more than I’m thinking it does – if the song is good that is.

  • dhunken

Maybe this has been answered and I missed it by why on Itunes is Kris’s single Live Like we’re Dying still have the old cover?.. I think the new cover would make it much more visually appealing and make someone (outside AI) more inclined to give it a listen

Yes, and I believe this will happen with LLWD. It will be a slow build as Kris does more promotion and it gets more airplay. Writing it off at this point is really premature…I think we just have to be patient as this unfolds.

Wasn’t it similar with LO? I’m a David Cook fan but not really sure how things played out last season (didn’t know about mj’s!). I seem to remember that had a really slow start as well.

David Cook’s album was on preorder right after he won. It have a couple weeks of strong sales and hit #1 on 5/30/08 — I think that would have the same effect as the Pass (NoBo + Kris Allen Album + Bonuses) and Kris’ album being available for preorder.

LLYd is moving down on iTunes. It’s not maintaining sales or moving up which would make sense given the fact that the air play is increasing daily. It’s too early to panic though. All the new stations playing it should give in a great boost in the next few weeks. If it doesn’t stabilize within 2 weeks and start to move up, there’s a problem with the song connecting with an audience.

    Leeann thanks so much!

I recommend those vids highly to Kris fans — he’s adorable, doing the “wiggaloo” school cheer with the girls. And LLWD sounds very good acoustic (two guitars). It’s also great to hear the kids SINGING ALONG to the chorus — which ain’t easy, it’s a tongue-tripper….

Glad they bought the homepage banner for Kris. But ‘” JMHO ‘” What is 19R/Jive thinking? All three headlines are weak ‘” but why lead with the 40,000 digital sales number? Couldn’t they twist the #2 Top 40 Adds ‘” couldn’t they put together a marketing plan to create a #1 stat?

Well, FWIW, from what I’ve seen of these ads, they all tend to follow a pattern — including sales, stats about adds, and then some stations and maybe some hot pick quotes if they’ve got them. … So maybe it’s just tradition that they’re following, since most of the ads seem to have all these things. Since people can just look up the number of copies sold anyway, maybe there’s no reason to hide it?

And, after all, even as we complain about Idols having *low* numbers, in fact for every single Idol who’s made any kind of a splash after the show at *all*, most of their numbers are way way better than the numbers of at least three quarters of the other signed artists out there, I’d bet! And that includes even their numbers that look “low” to us. To be #2 in any aspect of the stats puts you overall way way ahead of most other people.

I think it’s too easy for us to just want to compare the Idol winners (and even the first and second runners-up and so on) only to Britney and Miley and so forth on the numbers front.

I thought “Light On” had great first week sales? Didn’t someone say it had over 100K the first week and over 30K for the subsequent two weeks? I know it took a while to go platinum, but its first weeks were much better than LLWD, right?

Why shouldn’t Kris be compared to previous idol winners and contestants? I don’t get it.

Well, its a bit of a slippery slope. Idols are unique in that they arrive on the scene with fanbases, notoriety, and access to press/promo that no normal new act gets. But none of them get the exact same rollout and they usually are in different genres, and different labels. Even when they are on the same label they have different teams working on their projects. So after a while it gets hard to make direct comparisons.

Look at Kris. His single was handled in a way that no one else’s had… it literally debuted on the radio one day the turned up on Itunes unannounced a few days later. Most other idols who had singles released before their albums had some time for the song to get spins and/or press alerting people that the song was out before it went for sale. So how do we judge Kris? It gets difficult.

Does anyone know how many Kris Allen passes were sold? Kristen are these numbers ever released?

Am I imagining this or what? Didn’t they release Itunes Pass numbers right after the season when Adam also had his Season Performances album? I could swear I remember seeing both on the I tunes chart.

  • Q3

glamatheart: Yes, and I believe this will happen with LLWD. It will be a slow build as Kris does more promotion and it gets more airplay. Writing it off at this point is really premature’ ¦I think we just have to be patient as this unfolds.

Wasn’t it similar with LO? I’m a David Cook fan but not really sure how things played out last season (didn’t know about mj’s!). I seem to remember that had a really slow start as well.

David Cook’s “Light On” was not a huge hit with the critics. And it’s debut/peak at #17 on the BB Hot 100 was lower than Jordin’s “Tattoo” which debut/peak at #8 in it’s first week. But “Light On” sales didn’t much all like what is happening with LLWD. Here are the sales and BB Hot 100 Chart positions:

    Week #1 109,085 #17 (pop radio starts)
    Week #2 30,966 #66
    Week #3 15,083 offchart
    Week #4 33,598 #60
    Week #5 19,469 #80
    Week #6 18,089 #89 (mainstream Top 40 radio starts)

The single had a big week on the last week of the year (hugh music sales week — iTunes gift cards + Christmas gifts) but it never hit 100K after week #1. Also, “Light On” was BB #56 when Cook’s album was released — so the strong album sales occurred without a big hit single.

So I was reading over on ontd_ai that Kris got his friend the audition for Jive — and then Kris pushed through the final vote of approval because he really wants Cale in his band.

I figured Cale would have to audition, that you can’t just let anyone into your band willy-nilly without the label’s say so. But it sounds like Kris was determined and got his way here. That must mean Cale is a pretty talented musician himself.

When you have a very extensive fan base and very active fan sites like David A. had and has they were and are very good at getting the word out for a single release, appearances, radio shows, etc. This core base really propelled the sales for ‘Crush’ the first few weeks‘ ¦in truth the sales have been much better than his airplay would have ever indicated. Kris’ fans, as far as I can tell, don’t seem to have this rabid need to promote their guy via twitter or text or fan sites or bombarding online sites to let peeps know Kris’ single is out there.

Gonna have to disagree. The Archie fanbase is visible and awesome or if you prefer “rabid” and all that, but they absolutely can’t take credit for Crush’s phenomenal success in the first week let along the following weeks. We’re talking 166K the first week and almost two million in total overall. If that were the case, the fanbase would have been able to do the same for ALTNOY or the EPs that followed. Crush was simply a digital hit in general and that extended way beyond the fanbase from the first day. Radio simply jumped on it quickly and the public made it a hit.

Kris can have the same kind of success or better if he gets the right kind of song and radio support. For all we know, LLWD will still be a hit and it’s just having a slower start.

CindyM, you can find out what is being played on a station through your artist’s Yes.com channel. I have not been on there so don’t know how to find a given artist. I don’t know if it is backward-looking or if you have to watch for future spins. After the fact you can find it through Mediabase around the time of new adds. There is a place to look up stations that have not added the song and see how many times they played it in the last week. I’m spoiled by automatic links to these set up at DCO by LadyMadonna and don’t know how to tell you to access it.

Comparisons to prior Idols are always going to happen, but it is good to consider the economy when doing so. I don’t have the impression the economy is much worse than November of last year, but last November and this year are much worse than all prior years. No one is pulling the Idol album numbers of a few years ago. Singles seem bigger than ever, though. David Cook achieved something quite huge to get the album sales he did.

  • Mtlfan

It doesn’t surprised me that Kris could setup a band with his previous band pals like Cale Mills (who is quite good looking too!). It’s nice to see it starting happening. As he said in the Walmart soundcheck, he’s ready to move on with his own career.

It’s so weird how everyone is acting towards him [Adam], isn’t it? i mean these people should be used to celebrities and they are seriously star struck. that lady ( sorry- don’t know who she is) kept wanting to touch him.

So I was reading over on ontd_ai that Kris got his friend the audition for Jive ‘” and then Kris pushed through the final vote of approval because he really wants Cale in his band.

Great news for Kris. I think the most important thing for him is to put together a band that is right for him.

Why shouldn’t Kris be compared to previous idol winners and contestants? I don’t get it.

No reason. But although comparing Idols is unavoidable, I have been trying to look at what Jive is doing with Kris solely in the context of what is the best way to promote Kris as a recording artist. And I think that they are failing at this. YMMV.

Separate from that, I look at record sales in the context of the total business. And that is what iTunes sales rankings and BB charts give us.

  • Tess

Personally I am dissapointed in Kris’ core fan base. They propelled him to the AI crown and now they have seemed to dissapear. I was really hoping that they would pick it up and support their guy like Cook’s and Archie’s fans did last year. I know the song was released on a Friday, so I don’t count sales thru Sunday. But by Monday the fan community should have had the word out and his loyal supporters should have jumped to the task. Besides it’s $1.29…a cup of black coffee.

By the way Jordin sold 34,000 of Tatoo her first week and 33,000 the following week.

  • Trina

Also, ‘Light On’ was BB #56 when Cook’s album was released ‘” so the strong album sales occurred without a big hit single.

I’d bet anything TOML was also a big help in his early sales. LO may have been his real “first” single but TOML got massive exposure both on TV and radio. IMO he had that and a strong fanbase in his favor. Also he had major pre-orders. Till this day i don’t know how many pre-orders he racked up but from the time it went up on Amazon it never dropped low at all, and went it up went up on iTunes for pre-order it shot to #1 and did well there for a few days. When HDD’s early predictions came in they cited massive pre-orders which were going to lead to big first week sales. LO did better sales wise and didn’t have nearly the kind of audience impressions LLWD currently has due to Z100 not adding it until much later.

Someone above (sorry, no time to look up who) mentioned that David Cook’s promo overshadowed Archie’s last year, implying that this was responsible for his sales success. This is not how I remember it at all. I remember huge angst at the time for Cook fans because it seemed like Archie was being given perks normally reserved for the winner – first album single, first CD to come out, Macy’s parade, I believe more iTunes promo, I forget what else. It was implied that David Cook’s management didn’t believe in him and that he was DOOMED! SNL was the one significant bit of promo where David Cook got more than Archie. I bring this up only as it relates to giving a clearer picture of what promo will and won’t do. It is etched in my memory due to the angst at the time over this.

So we’ll see what happens when his major promo starts. Let him get on the national TV shows, print media, etc. And let the song pick up more spins. What kind of audience is it reaching right now? I vaguely remember LO not doing much of anything until it hit around 12 mil (?) in audience weekly. Is that about right peeps? Anyway, Kris is gonna take a little more time to judge, IMO.

I actually think it went back and forth that they weren’t promoting him enough or were spending too much to promote him based on each piece of promotion that came out. In the end, it’s all spin. We have absolutely no power in whether a song is loved by radio or not. A huge or dismal opening week means nothing in the grand scheme of things. A song will be spun or not regardless of what overinvested fans (of which I have to say I’m one) do.

Cindy M, you can go to yes.com and do a search (upper left) for the radio station’s call letters that your are looking for. Click on your station in the left panel. Then, at the top of the main screen there are 3 tabs: chat (you can live chat here with other people…I’d go to Kris’s channel for example instead of the one for the radio station), top songs, and song log.

In the song log you can pull up playlists, by the hour, and scroll through the artists listed. If Kris has been played, he will appear on those hourly lists. Hope this helps anyone wishing to check plays of their favorite artists on radio.

  • Tess

Crush was simply a digital hit in general and that extended way beyond the fanbase from the first day. Radio simply jumped on it quickly and the public made it a hit.

Not to beat a dead horse and I think it is stupendous that Archie got such good sales from Crush but the initial week was very much fan driven on all the sites. Fans were buying the single multiple times and then gifting them. The buzz in his hometown was electric and stations there played it repeatedly (thats the kind of stuff I mean, too). Besides, I have, to this day, never heard Crush on the radio here in Phoenix. Satalite and Disney but no local stations. Yes, there were casual listeners who bought it..but not the first week, that came later.

  • Q3

Another case in point- Clay Aiken. His first week sales for his album were phenominal because of his fan base, but his first single I think only made it to #37 on billboard.

I do not think that is correct. And Clay’s release dates aren’t similar to Kris’ plus pre-digital world.

    Based on wiki:

Clay’s first single was double A-side:
“Bridge over Troubled Water” (Paul Simon)
“This Is the Night” Chris Braide/Aldo Nova/Gary Burr

    Released: June 3, 2003
Peak Chart Position: #1 U.S. Debut
RIAA Certification: Platinum (July 15, 2003)
    U.S. sales: 1.3 million
CRIA Certification: 6x Platinum (July 2003)

His second single was also Double A-Side:
    The Way / Solitaire
    Released: March 17, 2004
    Peak Chart Positions: #4 US
    U.S. sales: 322,000
    CRIA Certification: Platinum (November 2004)

  • jpfan

I’ll stop beating the dead horse promo but Jive and RCA always handle artists differently. RCA does most of the promo closer to the release of the album. then they really go all out. Jive (more frugal) relies on radio (especially Z100) to do most of the work.

Idol winner/runner up usually gets GMA, Regis, Ellen, Kimmel and possibly Leno.
Other usual Idol winner gigs (Rockefeller Tree Lighting, high profile New Year’s Eve event, NA at some big sporting event).

  • Trina

Invisible was Clay’s 1st real single and that’s what they’re referring to when they say it went to #38 on the BB 100. Invisible also wasn’t available as a CD single and iTunes wasn’t around then so the BB100 position was based on airplay. Probably why his album did so well. TITN/BOTW was a HUGE seller for a CD single. Neither got major airplay and its Hot 100 position was mostly sales.

  • tinawina

Q3: That first single you listed for Clay was the equivalent of his coronation song. Back then the winner and runner up released a single right after the show. I don’t think it got radio play… maybe on AC.

Clay’s second song didn’t come out until way after the album released, I think. His album dropped in the fall. I’m pretty sure most of Clay’s sales came over the christmas season… he was double platinum before the year was out. It was definitely his fanbase at work.

  • Kirsten

David Cook’s album was on preorder right after he won. It have a couple weeks of strong sales and hit #1 on 5/30/08 ‘” I think that would have the same effect as the Pass (NoBo + Kris Allen Album + Bonuses) and Kris’ album being available for preorder.

A pre-order and a Season Pass are a little different and would tend to have the opposite effect on single sales. Cook’s pre-order on iTunes came bundled with a “free” copy of Light On which you could download immediately and for which they charged you 99 cents. If you canceled the pre-order, you got to keep the single and they kept your 99 cents. If you didn’t cancel the order, they delivered the entire CD and charged you the album price minus the 99 cents.

The week you made the pre-order, the single was counted as a download by SS. The day you got your CD, the single was considered returned by SS and decremented from the total number of downloads sold. So, pre-orders tend to inflate the number of singles sold in advance of the album release and decrease the number of singles sold the week of release.

Meanwhile, you pay for the entire Season’s Pass when you buy it and get the material when it’s available. It would tend to deflate sales prior to the album being released because people buy the pass and get the single. It would have no effect on singles sales after the album is released. In the end, it all comes out in the wash between the two styles.

This is the first year for an Idol Season’s Pass. I don’t recall seeing any numbers for it (we did get numbers for the compilation CD).

LLYd is moving down on iTunes. It’s not maintaining sales or moving up which would make sense given the fact that the air play is increasing daily.

It’s still punching above its weight, though. It will continue to fall until it reaches equilibrium between the number of spins and the number of units moved. Usually, they are related. He’s in the 400s in airplay and in the 100s on iTunes. He’s had no major television promo, yet, so there is nothing else to drive sales.

If we hit November and it’s still falling and slogging it in the nether regions of airplay, I’ll say toss the single overboard and try something new. John Mayer is releasing a new single in November (he released his first one a few days before Kris and his CD drops the same day).

Kris has online fans but not a hhuuuggeee amount of them, and right now that’s mostly who is gonna know about his single.

I have to say that I kind of wonder what we mean when we say “online fans.” … Do people mean by that just those who frequent fan forums, message boards, and blogs, or does that include everybody who uses their Internet connection?

Frankly, I would include “everybody who uses their Internet connection” as an online fan, if by that we mean “people who could learn online that Kris’s single is out.”

I happen to frequent some forums and blogs and such, and, yeah, they give me probably more news than I need quite often about some subjects of particular interest to me, like AI.

However, I also find out plenty of news about new music of the non-AI variety and so on just by reading the general news and scanning Amazon and the like. Heck, if you’re interested in music at all and you browse the Entertainment Weekly site, for example, just to get a sense of who’s coming out with a new album you might like to buy, you would know about Kris’s new single. You wouldn’t have to go to any AI blog or Kris forum to get that information.

Even people who are sort of casually online, and who watched and enjoyed Kris on the show and thus knew that he’d most likely have some music coming out this fall, would easily have found out about LLWD by now, I would think.

So if Kris doesn’t have “online fans” in this sense, then who the heck are his fans? The elderly? The Amish?

I honestly don’t see how we get around saying that a lot of Kris’s fans, for whatever reason, have decided not to buy LLWD right now. Maybe it’s because they know it’ll be on the album, or because they downloaded it free, or whatever. But given the level of Internet penetration at this point, I would think that a very large majority of people who actually like Kris enough to qualify as fans *do* know about the single and are, for whatever reason, not buying it. … Maybe they don’t have Itunes? ….

Adam hasn’t been on Ellen, Kimmel or Leno/Conan. All he did was two- post win duel appearances with Kris — Today and CBS Early Show, and a phone call with Ellen. Plus, he appeared wth Kris and Cook at the GMA Summer concert.

All of the other Adam promo events were outside of the Idol world — EW cover, Rolling Stone, TfM/2012 promos, Oprah, AMA’s and GMA Fall Concert.

Similarly, Cook got a lot of opportunities because of who he was as a performer, not just because he won Idol. SNL did not put on Cook because 19M set it up — it just doesn’t work that way.

  • jpfan

    Good point about iTunes.

I think SNL had Cook on because he had alot of buzz coming off his Idol win. If they loved him as a performer, they should have him on again. The AMAs and 19 have a very cozy relationship. But I’m not fighting the S7/s8 promo wars again, I promise.

  • PattyH

Michael Sarver is going to be on a tour with some other former idols, Alexis Grace, from this season, David Hernandez from Season 7 and Gina Glocksen from Season 6.

There is information that Michael posted on his Twitter page, about what places the tour will go to and what times the shows on the tour will start.

Wow! This is a great group! I would totally go to this. I love Alexis, David, and Gina!

  • tinawina

So if Kris doesn’t have ‘online fans’ in this sense, then who the heck are his fans? The elderly? The Amish?

LOL. Well alrighty then. I just meant the hardcore fan types, who do the fanboards and here and stay up on that kind of thing.

I don’t think everyone with an internet connection goes to entertainment sites everyday and browses the music section. Yes people can come across it the info normally, but its not like the best way to get music release to the masses.

There have been idols who did not have fanbases that appeared in large number at sites like these, but sold a whole lot of albums/songs the first time they appeared in public to promote it. Kris may be like that (or not), all I’m saying is we’ll have to see.

Not quite. Measure of a Man came out in October and Invisible came out right around then. The video was out by the time he did album promo and he sang it on all the shows. He even performed it on the AI tour so the fanbase was definitely familiar with it. The Way/Solitaire single didnt come out until March.

I scare myself with my former Claymate knowledge LOL

HA! I thought it came out later because I didn’t remember hearing it until like January. But I KNOW I heard that damn BOTW thing that summer. Wasn’t there some kind of mild controversy about that song?

I don’t think an appearance by an Idol once the tour is done is as cut and dried as you have indicated. I don’t think that these events are negotiating with AI, I am sure they are working with the record companies and an Idol’s booking agent.

Not all of the winners or runner-ups do the same thing. In fact the NAs seem to be spread amongst all of the idols including J Hudd who wasn’t in the top 3. TV talk shows, once the tour is done, are also about the singer and not the show same with personal appearance gigs, like being presenters at awards shows. The Idols get these due to name rocognition and fan interest, not because they won or lost a reality show.

Promo is a two-way street. The Idol needs the gig and the gig is searching for the person whose fans tag along so that they can sell advertising. To think a winner is not getting fair treatment because he isn’t getting what some previous idols got is not realistic. Every Idol needs to sell themselves…if the gig wants somebody else, that is how the cookie crumbles.

ETA…I must be a slow typist since Q3 already addressed this. I just know that many fans are under the same impression as jpfan and many of us want to make sure that there is a good understanding of what is a Winner’s package. Saves a lot of angst and “throwing under the bus” feelings.

  • Studio57

All right, i liked that. Gonna look for a downloadable version. Thansk studio!

Beehiway- there is actually a couple of videos on youtube of that band. It’s weird that he was labeled Glam Rock. Looked to me like he was having an identity crisis because they dressed like grunge but their songs were more pop oriented.

  • Chipmunk

So in summary Kris’s early sales suck royally for an idol winner,(And I mean SUCK!) but with spins ,adds etc he may pick up as time goes long. Thanks guys!

The music bizness is a hard one these days

  • Mtlfan

Thanks Kirsten for your explanation on pre-order album and itunes pass. It’s a factor on his single sales i think

  • Truthiness

Anyway, Kris is gonna take a little more time to judge, IMO.

But it’s been like 2 whole days since his radio adds! That should totally be enough time to determine how well it will ultimately do. And yeah I agree with giving it a few weeks (at least) to see if the increased radio play has a positive effect on sales. One hopes it does as that would seem to make sense as more people exposed to a song getting good reviews, will lead to more to more sales. But we’ll see.

And those YouTubes are cute, Kris rocking out as he usually does on guitar, and the clapping to parts of it, and the girls singing to parts of the chorus. But I have to say, damn! that song is wordy and Kris did have to kind of keep up with it.

bummer that the walmart soundcheck is titled ‘American Idol’ and includes adam, allison and kris together’ ¦doesn’t let any of them move beyond AI, and keeps them joined at the hip’ ¦i guess all publicity is good publicity, but agree with the view that it is time for them to move beyond AI and away from each other

That was just the advertisement for the upcoming Walmart soundcheck though. According to what I’ve read, they will have individual soundchecks featuring music from their albums. I can’t wait!

  • Kirsten

Kirsten strongly believes these types of comparisons have merit.

I believe that they are the most reasonable comparibles. You just can’t compare Idols to new artists off the street in my opinion. They’ve simply had too much exposure. Each year, we get more data on Idols, but each year, there is some new wrinkles too.

She seems to have a great deal of information and is a moderator here-so I figure these types of comparisons are valid and make sense.

I can only moderate my own threads (Headlines isn’t one of them) and in 2.5 years, I’ve only ever done that once (i.e MJ is the main modder because this is her house). But, MJ has said in the past that she is fine with comparisons between Idols and seasons so long as it is relevant. Just dragging in random Idols to blast them is not valid.

And, just because she’s flying, I’ll also mention that she typically frowns on fanwars, especially those that involve Idols from seasons of yore. I suspect she’d be happier spending her time losing money on the slots than having to spend her entire night deleting posts.

This is Kris’ friend who is supposedly joining him on tour. I bet if Kris could get hot guys like this in his band for the tour, with good songs on his album, the tour will be a good one.

    http://photos.Shotbymint.com/Cale-Mills/Cosmo-Shoot/8833027rZ6AC#585341407LtzoF

And this is what he said about Kris according to ontd_ai, far back in 2006.

“I’m thankful to Kris Allen – I will follow him anywhere. His humility is amazing and so I trust what he says and believe he is capable of anything. I’m thankful for his friendship and late nights at The Edge”.
They used to play at The Edge (a bar) back then.

“Measure of a Man” – CD album release date 10/14/03

“Invisible” – I can find a promotion CD single that was released and records of a MP3 single released 10/14/03. (digital in 2003 isn’t comparable to now)

Was “Invisible” released as a retail CD single in the US in 2003? Because I can’t find it listed as a Retail CD — even though it charted — looks like it charted on radio airplay (before digital sales were included on Billboard.)

  • wordnerdarchie

The week you made the pre-order, the single was counted as a download by SS. The day you got your CD, the single was considered returned by SS and decremented from the total number of downloads sold. So, pre-orders tend to inflate the number of singles sold in advance of the album release and decrease the number of singles sold the week of release.

That’s very interesting, I always wondered how that worked. So in Cook’s case, his first week of sales for Light On of 109,035 included the I-tunes pre-sales for the album.

The sales week ending 11/23/09 (week when album was released) would help us calculate an approximate I-tunes pre-order figure. His Light on Sales were 11,286. Granted, it could also be downloaded from Amazon and Walmart, etc, but I think I-tunes has most of the digital market. I notice that the week before and after this week sales were 21,127 and 20,300 respectively. It appears that the I-tunes presale figure was somewhere in the 9,000 – 10,000 range. (21,127 – 11,286 = 9873) If my logic is faulty, feel free to correct it.

The music bizness is a hard one

Which is why all the post-Idols are lucky, compared to most other talented young musicians, no matter how bad their results may sometimes look to us! That’s why you don’t hear many of them ever complaining, I think!

There have been idols who did not have fanbases that appeared in large number at sites like these, but sold a whole lot of albums/songs the first time they appeared in public to promote it.

Crush was getting lots of airplay from Z100, the biggest station in the country, immediately after they premiered it. It topped the afternoon and 9 @ 9 countdowns daily for awhile. New York is a huge market by itself but a lot of other markets also picked it up and played it way before the adds date, which was September. Even with radio giving it a decent reception, Crush sold beyond its airplay consistently. Still managed to sell over 100K when it made all the end-year countdowns in December, months after it became available for purchase. Again, all of Archie’s songs and EPs and his album have had buzz.and devoted fan support but none have matched the runaway success of Crush, which means to me that it was a hit that went beyond the fanbase even in the first week.

I can only HOPE he has material that resonates with the public like Crush did on his second Pop album. Fingers crossed.

Lots of luck to Kris and Adam as well.

  • Studio57

  • 123abc456

IndyMuse: Someone above (sorry, no time to look up who) mentioned that David Cook’s promo overshadowed Archie’s last year, implying that this was responsible for his sales success. This is not how I remember it at all.

I remember it the way you do. Folks thought that the label had no confidence in David Cook. Archie is all over the place. Where is David? etc etc etc. If anyone on this thread thinks that David Cook got more promo or buzz than Archie they are sadly mistaken. The wisdom was on this board and others that Archie would outsell David Cook handsdown.

ETA: How does this relate to this years Idols? It does provide a lesson in expectations and buzz. Because noone really knows what will happen until all is said and done.

  • Kirsten

That’s very interesting, I always wondered how that worked. So in Cook’s case, his first week of sales for Light On of 109,035 included the I-tunes pre-sales for the album.

I seem to recall that the iTunes pre-order came out later than “Light On” so the effect was seen in one of the later weeks. Wasn’t there one week where there was a problem on iTunes with “Light On” and the next week the problem was fixed and the pre-order was offered so we couldn’t figure out what the effect of either of them were? (too many variables).

I notice that the week before and after this week sales were 21,127 and 20,300 respectively. It appears that the I-tunes presale figure was somewhere in the 9,000 ‘“ 10,000 range. (21,127 ‘“ 11,286 = 9873) If my logic is faulty, feel free to correct it.

I can’t prove it, but I suspect the pre-orders might have been even higher than that. That week, Cook sang the song on many shows and that would tend to increase sales of both the singles and the album. So, I think that before removing the returned singles the sales of LO would have been higher that week than in the previous two weeks.

  • tiger92

See…I never knew this until I started reading at mjs. Are a large percentage of Kris’s spins coming from these radio stations in Cinci and Chicago? Where is that chart that breaks down what stations are spinning LLWD? Kirsten?

  • yinyang

So how do we judge Kris? It gets difficult.

The bottom line is sales. That’s how any recording artist will ultimately be judged in terms of success, and whether or not they’ll continue to have a recording contract.

There are subjective measures, like how great their voice is, or how creative they are, and so on, but as we can see here daily, those are very subject to opinion, and we’ll never all agree on those measures.

The cold hard fact is that the bottom line is sales/money generated.

  • sma11ie

David Cook’s album was on preorder right after he won. It have a couple weeks of strong sales and hit #1 on 5/30/08 ‘” I think that would have the same effect as the Pass (NoBo + Kris Allen Album + Bonuses) and Kris’ album being available for preorder.

A pre-order and a Season Pass are a little different and would tend to have the opposite effect on single sales. Cook’s pre-order on iTunes came bundled with a ‘free’ copy of Light On which you could download immediately and for which they charged you 99 cents. If you canceled the pre-order, you got to keep the single and they kept your 99 cents. If you didn’t cancel the order, they delivered the entire CD and charged you the album price minus the 99 cents.

Not sure what this is related to, but just some factual clarifications here, cuz Kirsten, by responding to the OP about summer preorders with iTunes preorders, it’s a bit misleading. The OP said DC’s preorder was up right after he won and hit #1 in May, but that was in reference to the Amazon preorder, NOT the iTunes preorder, which was posted something like 2 weeks before the drop date in November.

Carrie is a classic example of this. Not to say that Kris is the next Carrie, just to say that it can happen.

Carrie was exactly who I was thinking of. You can also probably argue for Fantasia.. who was HATED online but sold very well off appearances on things like NAACP awards and the like (and of course, all those urban radio hits). And then there’s always Jordin, who sold the best out of her season from the beginning even though she had virtually no online fanbase. ITA the jury is still out on Kris.

  • BeckyMD

We are cross-comparing AI winner/runner up gigs and RCA/Jiva strategies. I’m only after AI so closely this season and base on what I learned here and other forums

    AI winner:
    – Media circus
    – guest in Ellen, Kimmel, Leno/Conan live
    – GMA summer concert, Wal-Mart shareholder, Ford performances
    – More songs in AI tour

    AI runner up:
    – co-appearance with the winner in some of the media circus shows
    – co-appearance in Ford private concert

Can go to either the winner or runner up depending on whose characteristics fits better:
    – Disney
    – Macy’s parade

    Jiva:
    – Early promotion of single
    – depending on radio spin to promote the single
    – concert gigs
    – Talk show guest/performance near album drop date
    – GMA Fall Concert

    RCA
    – Late promotion of single, close to album drop date
    – Talk show guest/performance near album drop date
    – GMA Fall Concert

    Outside of 19 control
    – RS, EW cover
    – Oprah, AMA’s, SNL
    – movie songtrack
    – Olympic theme song

Carrie is a classic example of this. Not to say that Kris is the next Carrie, just to say that it can happen.

Yeah, Carrie hasn’t had a lot of fans at Idol forums. But nevertheless, her first album sold very fast, as I recall — so it wasn’t as if she was a slow builder in any way. That album was something like the fastest country album out of the gate *ever,* wasn’t it?

I guess that’s why I’m reluctant to label as the only “online fans” just the fans in forums and on blogs. I guess I’ve learned that that’s how people here are defining it — but frankly I’ve always thought that “people who hang around Internet forums” isn’t a definition of “fanbase” for anybody.

With Kris, it seems to me that the question has been: Do people not *know* about LLWD, or are fans who know not buying? And I still don’t think you have to hang around online blogs or fangroups to know he has a single out now!

To me, the fans that you actually need to know about in order to understand what’s happening are not the ones that discuss the Idol all day but all the fans who pay enough attention to the media to be aware that music is coming out — and then make the decision to buy quickly, or not. (just like I would call people online consumers of political news the people who scan that news on the NY Times site and Huff Post, not just those who make comments on some political blog or other). I think we think in terms of vocal online fan groups just because we’re among those people. I don’t know that there’s any evidence at all that the online fan groups are the main basis for good sales or even for quick sales. Actually, there’s a lot of evidence to the contrary, seems to me.

With Some Hearts, for example, whether people learned about it when it was first released by reading online or by some other means (and we’re *all* reading a lot more online these days than we are in newspapers and magazines and such), they did learn about it quickly and it shot to the top of the charts. So — no real comparison to Kris that I can see….unless he has a lot of fans who have simply *no* way to learn that he has a single out. (and that brings me back to the Amish, I’m afraid!)

  • jpfan

In the end, both Davids established themselves. Maybe not OMG the incredible superstars everyone was hoping for but successful enough to have good careers and second albums. S8 folks will be lucky to do as well.

  • 123abc456

I am not sure when the Itunes preorder came out but I remember you could not order Light On when they were setting up the preorder so the song really fell that week, and then the next week the folks could preorder the album and get LO as a single but it was after LO was offered. Now when the album comes out and folks chose to “complete the album” the sales for the single drop because the song then becomes a part of the album and not a single. So when the album drops the single sales will go down.

  • Kirsten

Are a large percentage of Kris’s spins coming from these radio stations in Cinci and Chicago? Where is that chart that breaks down what stations are spinning LLWD? Kirsten?

You can find them on AllAccess. You need one of their free accounts. I can’t see Pop, but Z100 is spinning the crap out of it (57 spins in the last week).

    Leader board:
    WKRQ: Cincinnati: 38
    WRMF: West Palm: 31
    WXLO: Worcester: 27
    WWMP: Burlington: 26
    WINK: Fort Meyers: 25
    WMTX: Chicago: 19
    WGER: Saginaw: 17
    KURB: Little Rock: 16
    KEZR: San Jose: 13

  • sma11ie

wordnerdarchie, Kirsten remembers it exactly as I do. The first week of LO sales were pure single sales. A week or 2 after, the weird glitch was fixed and the preorder went up. So there was a lot of speculation if the LO sales that week were due just to the preorder or the fixed glitch, etc.

    Outside of 19 control
    ‘“ GMA Fall Concert

I’m pretty sure GMA Fall concerts are much like talk show promo appearances. Also, Idol has always had a lot of folks on GMA, so I think 19 has a great relationship with ABC.

Unless Kris is going to go country and release an album in the country market-you can’t compare these two. I’ve been a fan of country music and I have lived in the capital of CM. You cannot compare the cm market or fans to the pop market. Country music is a different world.

Thanks, that’s basically all I’m looking for. If I had to go through every season and its peculiarities to come down to how comparitively as an Idol winner Kris is doing, I would effing off myself!

So sales it is …and it will be judged better after the album comes out and the almighty itunes passes count(there better be a million of them at this rate!)

Don’t know how much it means but I got in my car at 1:00 and lo and behold, LLWD was playing on WPLJ. I think it’s classified as the Hot AC station in NY. I’m not sure if it was a listener request or if they played it on their own (12 -1 is all requests lunch hour). Either way, they played it. (Yay so now I don’t have to listen to Z100 in order to hear it). Hopefully, it’s a good sign.

I seem to recall that the iTunes pre-order came out later than ‘Light On’ so the effect was seen in one of the later weeks.

Yes, the itunes pre-order came on Oct 21st, three weeks after LO was released. As part of the pre-order, LO was available immediately, and billed immediately whilst the rest of the album was billed on album release date.
It means that the itunes pre-orders bumped LO sales, that went from 15K 3rd week to 33K 4th week. (and deducted at album release time)
The same happened with DA’s album/single.

  • tinawina

To me, the fans that you’re interested in are not the ones that discuss the Idol all day but all the fans who pay enough attention to the media to be aware that music is coming out ‘” and then make the decision to buy quickly, or not.

Ok, I see where you are coming from now. The problem with that for me is that Kris single has not really hit the national media like that yet. Carrie was everywhere all at once, so anyone who loved her knew about her stuff right away. But other than mentions on all the major idol blogs, and radio appearances in some of the cities spinning it, Kris’ single has not had a lot of promo. That’s what I mean. When he’s on the Today Show and Regis performing it, then you can expect the anxious fans who are not frequenting blogs to kick in.

I love (LOVE) Jill Scott, but I don’t go to her fansites or frequent her blogs. I hear news about her if she pops up in a magazine or my TV, etc. I’m online all the time, but often I don’t hear about a new project of hers until right around the time its gonna drop, because that’s when the promo starts. So I’m thinking Kris may be in a similar boat. Maybe.

  • Q3

Meanwhile, you pay for the entire Season’s Pass when you buy it and get the material when it’s available. It would tend to deflate sales prior to the album being released because people buy the pass and get the single. It would have no effect on singles sales after the album is released. In the end, it all comes out in the wash between the two styles.

iTunes Passes aren’t reported to SoundScan when they are purchases. That’s why the Kris Allen Pass was never made the Billboard Digital Album charts — it’s treated like a preorder bundle.

It’s still not considered a sale until delivery in made. The SoundScan rules are very clear about sales transactions. The accounting for the Pass is exactly the same as for a gift card except it can only be used to get specific items. iTunes takes your money, and has a liability on their books to offset the collection, they do not report it as revenue until the deliver the product, and they declamate the balance on the Pass as deliveries are made.

So the NoBo pass sales have been sent to SoundScan, the album numbers will be reported when the album is released. What they did with LLWD is unknown — was it a bonus track, or was it done as a sale that they will later reverse when they deliver the album. My guess is the latter.

  • Studio57

Q3- that was the figure I got for “Invisible” – #37 on the BB chart. It says on wiki that was his first single.

  • Trina

“Invisible” wasn’t released as a retail single just a radio single. I think the video actually got more exposure because at the time TRL was HUGE and Claymates made sure it was a constant figure on there. IIRC it was even retired which not many videos did.

…After two weeks of radio play, Crush had a spin count of over 1400, while LO had 550+, Tattoo 530 and LLWD 430. LLWD spin count is now after three weeks just under 500.

Actually, the overall count for LLWD is 1377 as of yesterday, pretty evenly split between Top40 and HAC.

Just to put the “internet” in pespective I don’t know a single person who I have more than a nodding acquaintance with that doesn’t own or have access to a computer. Even the old ladies have them and know how to get online and check email…their kids demand that.

Now to be honest, I live pretty middle class so my demographic is not that of everyone…but even in poorer areas the library computers are restricted to time usage because everyone knows how to use them and the demand is very high.

So, yes, most people get a lot of information, however casual, from their computers. And people are a lot more savvy then we think they are. If someone watched Idol and is interested they know how to get news about their fav…they don’t have to be invested like a fanatic like me.

So inside idoldom people should know Kris has a single out…and that should be about 20 million people (hah, hah) give or take a few. So his fans, if they like the song, should be buying. The general populace who don’t know Kris from Adam (not our Adam but the original Adam…old saying) will buy after the song is played or promoted. So, yup, things are a bit weird right now and hopefully the ship will right itself, soon.

  • LaurelG

That was just the advertisement for the upcoming Walmart soundcheck though. According to what I’ve read, they will have individual soundchecks featuring music from their albums. I can’t wait!

I suspect that just the interview is joint, which I don’t mind because they play off each other so well. This is probably the last hurrah for Kradison.

Again, all of Archie’s songs and EPs and his album have had buzz.and devoted fan support but none have matched the runaway success of Crush, which means to me that it was a hit that went beyond the fanbase even in the first week.

ITA, serenade. I was one of those casual (very casual) viewers of S7 and the first time I heard Crush on the radio I knew it would be a huge hit. It didn’t matter to me who was singing the song (I was surprised to find it was Archie, in fact), I just knew from the first listen the song was golden.

  • Kirsten

OK I don’t get it then. If they are spinning the crap out of it and it is hitting top 10 on their daily list, why is it not affecting sales?

It is. If it wasn’t, the song might be parked in the lower 1000s. Z100 is a leader in the format, but the United States is bigger than New York. You need spins across the country. The song has AIs of about 4 million. On Pop alone, “Down” has an AI of over 80 million. Add in another 75.9 million on Rhythmic (and that’s not even looking at Urban) and the that’s 156 MILLION impressions every week. That resulted in 122K in sales last week.

So: 156M=122K and 4M=13K. If Kris had Jay Seans AI to sales ratio, he would have sold 3K and if Jay had Kris’s, he would have sold 507K.

The AI for hit songs is HUGE. Fans buy the first couple weeks. Then it’s promotion like airplay that carries the load.

  • lucy

OK I don’t get it then. If they are spinning the crap out of it and it is hitting top 10 on their daily list, why is it not affecting sales?

Well, it’s a big station but it’s still only in one city. For all we know, the bulk of his single sales have been to New Yorkers.

Seems that radio play drives sales mainly when a song is heard so much that it becomes at least a bit of an earworm. So if LLWD hasn’t become an earworm in more than a couple of cities so far, then that would explain the lower sales.

Furthermore, a bunch of the play is at HAC (and even some AC??? — I forget). And it’s a lot harder for a song to become an earworm on the AC formats because they simply don’t play any song nearly as often as the Pop stations will play a particular song. HAC/AC also play tons of older material as well, so a new song may be added to the playlist and get play, but not on the kind of hourly or every-three-hourly basis you can get on pop. And thus it takes longer for AC/HAC songs to become I-gotta-buy-that earworms.

  • springboard

Actually, the overall count for LLWD is 1377 as of yesterday, pretty evenly split between Top40 and HAC.

Yes, this is the total so far, the comparison I was making was between the weekly totals. It’s usually what is used in order to evaluate the trend, increase or decrease.

Maybe.

    Yeah, I agree.

Also agree about loving Jill Scott! And, yep, you don’t hear as much about her new projects. …

I do think that casual readers are likely to see a lot more about Idol winners’ projects than they do about somebody like Jill Scott’s, though, who is a musician in a less-high-selling genre and has never been a reality tv star!

Kris needs to make it onto the charts, either Pop or HAC. Once he’s on the charts smaller market radio stations will add it to their playlists.

A couple of years ago, I talked with a program director of a smaller radio outlet about how songs make their playlists. He said that they don’t play a song until they’re on the chart for HAC. (It was a HAC station, but I assume that Pop works the same way.)

    Here’s Kris’s spins per mediabase.

    10/14/2009 AI: 4.613, Total: 498, HAC: 237, Pop: 261

Right now, LLWD is getting total weekly spins of around 500, split between HAC and Pop. It needs to be in the 300+ range to make it onto HAC. So he’s getting close there. The pop chart is going to be more difficult to crack. You need close to 1000 weekly spins to make that chart.

To Date: AI: 15.409, Total: 1377, HAC: 586, Pop: 602

Folks thought that the label had no confidence in David Cook. Archie is all over the place. Where is David?

This year if there is no TFM and AMA which are not controlled by RCA, people would’ve thought the same except that it would seem more acceptable because Adam is a runner up.

Kris has the first single out 3 weeks ago, which was debut in the largest top 40 station, add this week, can be downloaded from itune and just has a banner on Z100; he has single cover and album cover that are beautifully made, his album has a name and can be pre-ordered long time ago, he just did his single live today, and will perform it in more coming concerts his label arranges for him. he is forming his own band with whom he will be touring next February.

Now for Adam, he has almost no promotion from his label after the tour (RS cover, tour headliners, TFM and AMA, top 10 in Amazon are not controlled by RCA). RCA didn’t announce his album can be pre-ordered on Amazon, it hasn’t pick his first single, let alone debut date, and his album name is TBD. He doesn’t have tour date.

If there’s no buzz from outside the label, Adam is locked in studio and would’ve been invisible as in David’s case last year. Twitter helps generate grassroot buzz this year, which benefits Adam who have more online vocal fans.

There have been idols who did not have fanbases that appeared in large number at sites like these, but sold a whole lot of albums/songs the first time they appeared in public to promote it.

I know Carrie is always brought up when this is mentioned, but I feel like this year’s situation is much different than Carrie’s. Wasn’t it confirmed that Carrie was always #1 in votes from the very beginning? Kris came on strong late in the game, so I doubt that’s true for him.

I never posted about Idol during Carrie’s season because people on the internet held her in extreme dislike. It seemed pointless. Danny equals Carrie more than Kris, IMO.

Kris has always seemed well liked and popular. He seemed to have a strong internet fanbase at one time. I’m not sure what happened, but maybe they just post somewhere else now.

Trina: ‘Invisible’ wasn’t released as a retail single just a radio single. I think the video actually got more exposure because at the time TRL was HUGE and Claymates made sure it was a constant figure on there. IIRC it was even retired which not many videos did.

Thanks, so “Invisible” wasn’t a commercial retail single. Digital single sales were not part of the Hot 100 until Feb 2005 — so this in not comp to 2009.

Legal music downloads were first compiled by Billboard in 2003, in February 2005 digital sales for singles started to be included in the Billboard Hot 100 and other Billboard charts.

See’ ¦I never knew this until I started reading at mjs. Are a large percentage of [the kid's] spins coming from these radio stations in Cinci and Chicago?

I dont follow it that closely, but these two were among the early spin leaders They are also owned by the same company, so this was probably a package deal. Concert in Cinci (Idol winner does this one every year) and concert in Chicago. Spins on both station.

Every act who wants significant airplay has to play this game. It’s just business. They could call spins advertisments and sell them off a rate card, but the stations and the record companies want to preserve the illusion that these songs are picked and played for other reasons.

    Definitely.

I think I come at this from a somewhat different perspective than many. Since my top Idol is Elliott, a third-place finisher who ended up with a platinum-selling single and gold album, I have been focusing on the idea that, even if you don’t have rabid immediate AI-based fans to give you the sales, you *can* get them afterward. So at this point, it doesn’t seem to me as if Kris really needs the benefit of the doubt! For me, it’s just, Okay, his Idol fans are deciding not to buy that single. But … the proof of what will happen with Kris’s sales is still out there awaiting his impact on the general public ….

Elliott’s online fanbase has long been rabid, but still not big enough to really get him big sales. He got them anyway, though. (at least on the first album and single … )

alaadam: THis is confusing to me. What is the bottom line? What will it do to the numbers?-in plain simple english?

Probably: If there are 5,000 Kris Allen pass downloads of LLWD, it will be recorded as 5,000 units sold when they are downloaded. Then when these 5,000 people download the album, the LLWD sales will go down by 5,000 and the album that includes LLWD will go up 5,000.

UNLESS they do the LLWD Pass download as a bonus (no value track) then it will not be reported to SoundScan at all. IMO this would be the best way to do it — but probably not what they will do.

Nielsen SoundScan is full of issues but it is better than the pre-SoundScan reporting system — by far. The biggest challenges are that some sales are not included — but it does give a relative measure of what is sold and captures most sales.

Billboard is an attempt to measure song popularity. Currently they use SoundScan sales (retail, digital and certain events) and radio airplay. It ignores TV audiences completely. They are working on how to better reflect online popularity in the Billboard charts. It is a difficult problem. The 4 major labels support the radio-oriented chart methodology because it gives them and advantage. Indie artists are pushing for some measure on online popularity because it give them a better shot of charting.

RIAA is based on industry shipments less returns — it also has accuracy issues.

My understanding is RCA tends to promote its artist’s single late in timeline as compared to Jiva. The buzz from outside the label not only saves RCA money and resources for other use, but also bring up Adam’s promotion to a much earlier day than RCA would have in its plan. Otherwise, there would be an Adam-vacuum and Kris-congest period as in Davids’ case.

To prove that he’s the big deadbeat jerk I suspected he was?

Well yeah but I think we also got the memo about that when his massage parlor indiscretion was exposed.

So if I’m reading the news correctly, David’s parents filed for divorce in February and the media is just getting around to reporting on it. I mean, they reported on the arrest in June and saved the divorce news for October? Uh huh.

I have no doubt David and his siblings have known this and have been dealing with the fallout for months.

No wonder David was able to gift his sister Jazzy cats for her birthday. Jeff probably isn’t living under the same roof as Lupe anymore so his allergies didn’t have to factor in.

The divorce at least seems civil but the child support issue is a WTF. I would think it’d be the other way around.

    We need a FAQ. Stat.

Adds normally occur on Monday or Tuesday. Go look at the add dates for some singles. Pop adds on Tuesday. Hot AC on Monday. Sometimes there are auto-adds during the week or some random station decides to add at an odd time, but it’s perfectly normal for there not to be adds everyday.

There is no cause for either panic or celebration on the lack of adds for two days.

In other news, that kid that was or was not in the balloon was once on that show “Wife Swap”. Switched with a family of safety experts. Eeep.

The 4 major labels support the radio-oriented chart methodology because it gives them and advantage. Indie artists are pushing for some measure on online popularity because it give them a better shot of charting.

Seems like that would also shore up the perception that the last-century label-to-radio-to-hit paradigm still rules. That it works. That radio matters more than TV or Word-of-Mouth. When record sales plummet each year. But it’s a power structure. With a lot of people’s power at stake. So if the charting changes, power shifts.

And if there is no universal “measuring stick” of all the many indie downloads, or back of the car, or whatever new distribution appears then the aggregates can’t be compared. Like all Billboard charted sales versus the ever-changing technology of ways people access new music each year. (Streaming on Spotify in Europe for example. Clicking on YouTube for free. Downloading directly from an artist’s website.)

    Really interesting post, Q3.

Archuleta divorce….Actually in the papers filed in Utah Jeff is the petitioner and is asking for legal custody of the kids with Lupe having visitation rights. That is why he he asking for child support. Jeff filed, not Lupe. Now a judge will decide how things work out and who really gets what. (had a Utah divorce once).

All I know is that instincts are oftentimes right and that the unwarranted support that Jeff got from Archie fans is coming back to bite them. I will never understand why they didn’t believe Naomi Judd when she talked about the Archuleta Father/Son dynamics. What ax would she have to grind. (Ok, now I’ve said that this issue can go to the back of the closet).

That is why he he asking for child support. Jeff filed, not Lupe. Now a judge will decide how things work out and who really gets what. (had a Utah divorce once).

The media is reporting joint custody. They wouldn’t have reported that if they didn’t see a copy of the divorce petition, right? Plus, it’s been months since the divorce was filed and since then Lupe, David and his siblings have seemed closer than ever, even taking road trips together when he’s home. The child support issue seems to suggest she has more income available than he does but who the hell knows.

  • Duke

Went to Best Buy & Wal-Mart and neither had Archie’s X-mas album

  • cmom

Wait – aren’t people mixing up some of the old divorce papers with the new filing? The wanting child support from Lupe is from the pre star search divorce filing. Also the Jeff wanting custody. It is all different now I am sure. That was years ago but the divorce papers are in the public record and some places are quoting those?

My personal feelings were that Kris had more offline and casually online fans than Adam’s more dedicated online fan presence. And yes, I was reminded of people like Carrie as well, especially even with the whole tour stuff. Or Fantasia and Jordin are other good examples of winners who didn’t seem like they had a ton of online support, but both have some sales successes, for sure. Certainly more than the online community would have seemed to indicate.

So because Kris’s fans might also be more offline or casual internet fans, then yes, they’re going to need radio and more advertising/promotion to know about Kris’s single and later album, and to rememeber how much they liked him. Oh and that’s a catchy song, they should buy it or that album when it comes out.

I will just say people getting their news or info from the internet increases all the time, but I would also say there is a difference between people who hang out here, a site devoted to AI or other more general sites. There can be a fair amount of users and ones who follow AI, but only during the season. Some will care enough beyond that to be invested enough to look for news in that forum later on, if someone posts it. But otherwise they’re probably only slightly more likely to know or care about an AI song than a non-AI watcher, so it’s really based on the music for them. Not their investment or attachment to an Idol.

At least this has been my experience and idea about Kris’s fanbase. Which just means to me if he gets exposure/promotion, and has good enough music, I think he’s going to do fine. I still think, that as per those spins, Kris can create some very radio friendly music, so that is going to help him in the long run.

The papers are online and available to read…they are public record. You can’t have joint custody and then request child support. The custodial parent ALWAYS gets child support from the non-custodial parent. I think the report took bits and pieces from the actual document to sensationalize the whole thing.

And we don’t know if the divorce is final or if it is still be negotiated, and I would suspect that Lupe has temporary custody if it hasn’t been settled. Besides, in Utah, children are asked who they want to be with…not always granted but the courts do take the children’s wants into consideration.

Besides, in Utah only one of the parties need to file. It has no bearing on the ultimate outcome because the other party has a right to dispute any information brought up in the petitioner’s divorce filing. ’nuff said.

Papers are dated Feb. 5, 2009

Many of the venues are IMAX. And can you imagine seeing Adam in IMAX with 6 channel magnetic IMAX sound? Bet that this special 2012 trailer was recorded using the IMAX digital sound DDP designed by Sonics. High-power, wide frequency, dynamic range … frequency response of 20 ‘“ 20.000 Hz is maintained over the entire audio spectrum of ten octaves. (Six octaves is found in conventional cinemas.)

I am jealous of anyone who is near an IMAX that is showing this.

Why is Kris performing at a high school?

  • Cate

Apparently, Utah determines child support similarly to Florida. It’s formulaic, with each parent contributing a percentage according to their percentage of combined income. If one parent is unemployed, but determined to be employable, minimum wage will be attributed to that parent and figured into the combined income figure. No free rides for stay-at-home mom and dads. Usually, tho, the share of the parent with the lesser income is deducted from the amount of the other parent’s obligation when it comes time to pay if that parent has custody. In Florida, the total amount of child support is based on the combines income of the parents and the number of minor children to be supported. I don’t see anything unusual here.

Reminds me that Adam’s parents divorced when he was 19, too. I’m sure it’s not a happy time for Archie.

You can’t have joint custody and then request child support. The custodial parent ALWAYS gets child support from the non-custodial parent.

You can share joint legal custoday, with one parent having “physical” custody. The parent without the physical custody would then pay child support.

Also, Jeff clearly is a douchebag regardless of what the old or current divorce papers say.

Why is Kris performing at a high school?

The Cincinnati radio station has an annual fundraising-for-cancer contest for schools and the prize is a concert. Last year it was Archie who sang, this year Kris. … Same school won both times, it seems. They’re good fundraisers — or else the other schools are bad ones ….

  • Truthiness

That clip of Kris singing Britney is fun, love the girls singing along and Kris’s expression when doing it. Not thrilled with it as a song, it’s no Heartless there, but it was a fun sing along and the girls loved discovering what it was and singing along, so good choice.

robininny: Lots of speculation here recently about the possibility of Adam Lambert touring with Lady Gaga. Looks like that won’t happen any time soon. She announced a new North American tour, ‘The Monster Ball,’ beginning November 27 with Kid Cudi as her supporting act.

Adam already qwashed that rumor in interviews on 10/13/09. But Kid Cudi is only signed for the first part of the tour. LOL! the rumor is thus still alive.

Frankly, I do not think that Adam – Lady Gaga is the best combo for Adam — even though she is a bigger act. I would rather see Adam follow Cook’s path and headline — plus I would love to see Adam in a smaller venue vs. open for someone on an arena tour.

My dream Adam tour is to see him booked in concert halls/performing arts centers with really great acoustics. These were very common venues for theatrical rock acts in the 1970′s. So just give me Adam at Carnegie Hall in the Isaac Stern Auditorium with fire, dancers, rock and electro musicians — and the New York Philharmonic. I dream big!

The TFM/2012 promo is a real coup for Adam. You can’t buy exposure like this. Or can you? I feel like the people behind THIS IS IT could charge a pretty penny for a slot before the movie if they wanted, but I guess that doesn’t usually happen? How does it work anyway with an exclusive arrangement like this?

I’m also curious, what usually happens in terms of cost-sharing between the label and the movie studio when a movie uses a music video as part of its promotional roll out? I mean, you’re promoting the movie (benefits the movie studio, but also the song (RCA), but also the soundtrack (different label)

  • Tess

I hate arena concerts…can’t see or hear a bloody thing and it tends to be more of a “trip” for the concert goers than a show. I, too, love concert halls, assigned permanent seating, great accustics, and respectful audiences (its harder to rock-out in an auditorium, its made for sitting).

  • sidewalkstory

It’s all Sony though, right? So that probably takes some of the guesswork out of it. They probably do a fair amount of joint stuff within the company, I would think … business synergies and all that.

  • Tess

Its all really sony which is the parent company of RCA. But the soundtrack and the video and the single will be released through Sony, Adam is just on loan.

I hate to be grumpy, but would it be possible to start a separte thread to discuss Archie’s parent’s divorce so people can avoid it. I don’t even want to read about David Archuletta, let alone his parents’ marital problems. Yeah, I know that. Totally agree with this. …

I was being unclear. I wasn’t really talking about the fact that this is a small radio event. I know that they all do those — that’s the payola that everybody denies is happening!

But the thing that seems kind of odd about this one is that I think I read about either this year’s or last year’s contest that the winning school only raised something like $3,000 or thereabouts!

It seems like a very piddling amount of money for the *winner* of such a contest to have ponied up in a metropolitan area the size of Cincinnati! Makes me think that nobody really cared very much about cancer or about the concert, or about both, maybe!

Crap, I remember back in the 70s in a smaller school than this raising *way* more money than this on some fundraisers! And we’re talking before 30 extra years of inflation. Maybe I am misremembering what I read about the amount of money raised by this school — but if I’m right. Well, let’s just say I’m not impressed by the fundraising capacity of the Cincinnati area!

Clarification: After reading the divorce documents, it is Jeff who is required to pay Lupe a minimum of $349.60 in child support monthly as a base minimum. It’s right there in the document. The media needs to correct that. So joint custody with Lupe getting the “primary physical custody” and the child support payments.

Nevertheless, the radio station obviously has known for months that they were going to offer this concert as a prize for something. To me, it seems kind of stupid and cheesy of them, then, to make it “how much can you raise in a week?” They could have made it into a little more serious fundraiser if they wanted to. Kind of makes it seem that they don’t care much, to me.

    Susan Boyle’s album cover revealed:

Just me, or does it look like Simon’s “falling in love” expression from the I Dreamed A Dream segment?

Thanks all for the updates from Kris’ events today :D Looks like he had fun and it’s going to a good cause. Very nice that those high schoolers were willing to give to charity.

My thoughts go out to Archie, he’s such a sweet kid (though I suspect probably tougher than he seems).

There are two musical acts that have been anounced to appear on SNL.

Taylor Swift will host and perform on nov 7: http://tv.yahoo.com/news/article/tv.accesshollywood.com/taylor-swift-host-perform-snl-20091015

Dave Matthews Band will perform on nov 21: http://www.jambands.com/features/2009/09/30/jeff-coffin-mutopia-rising?4

So because Kris’s fans might also be more offline or casual internet fans, then yes, they’re going to need radio and more advertising/promotion to know about Kris’s single and later album, and to rememeber how much they liked him. Oh and that’s a catchy song, they should buy it or that album when it comes out.

Is this the latest theory? Kris’s fans don’t have access to the internet? They’re becoming as mysterious as Syesha’s fan base.

Sorry this maybe o/t. I cannot understand all the fans that are so caught up in the bromance of Kradam, but most fans do not want hear about Adam’s actual relationships such as Drake. I admit, I am confused. Adam cares about this person’ ¦.we should be respectful about that.

It makes sense if you think about it. Kradam lovers don’t like Drake since he spoils things for them. And even if that weren’t true any time an Idol acquires a significant other at least half their fan base jumps down the significant other’s throat with a microscope and it ain’t pretty. Nothing going on here that hasn’t happened before.

Frankly, I do not think that Adam ‘“ Lady Gaga is the best combo for Adam ‘” even though she is a bigger act. I would rather see Adam follow Cook’s path and headline ‘” plus I would love to see Adam in a smaller venue vs. open for someone on an arena tour.

Considering the type of show Adam wants to put on — according to what has been reported here and elsewhere — following Cook’s path would not be the best bet for Adam. Cook plays at all types of venues. From very small clubs to outdoor festivals and fairs. He and his band don’t have much to carry with them. They can fit in any where, they are not costly, and they are low maintenance. Adam wants to have dancers and costumes and special effects and — of course — a band. That costs money, it’s harder to move around logistically and you need venues that can support all of that. That’s why opening up for a bigger act at larger venues sounds more reasonable for him. Kris is much more suited to Cook’s plan, based only upon what I’ve seen thus far. (We’ll see if he can sell-out or come close to selling out a tour like Cook has.)

jpfan: ‘The movie 2012, the MJ This is It movie, and Adam Lambert are all Sony Entertainment. This is quintessential cross-promotion between the music and movie divisions of the same company.’

This is quite a shocker. Let me get the smelling salts.

“2012″ promo is a big deal for Adam, don’t get me wrong. But any Adam promo is just a bonus for Sony Corp. because the tie in between “TII” and “2012″ is to promote “2012″ — just the the roadblock was to promote “2012″. Adam is just along for the ride — and not a bad one at that!

Just to put it all into perspective:

“2012″ will generate $800+ million in worldwide gross; AEG predicts that “This Is It” will gross $250 million within 5 days — which seems a bit high but it will set records.

Sony has about $250 million in “2012″ and over $100 milion in TII. (Columbia, which is owned by Sony, agreed to pay $60 million for rights to the project plus marketing and distro costs.)

IF Adam’s TBD is a monster hit and sells 3 million units that’s about $36 million in revenue. In other words — there is no chance that Adam means over $1 billion to Sony — lilke these two films — forget about ancillary revenue streams from the films.

According to Q3, opening acts still pay their own way. Adam would get the benefit of larger venues and more exposure, but he’d still have to deal with the costs and logistics.

And at this point – I have no idea if he’d need the help. I’ve decided to stop being logical about Adam, because logic would never lead to where he is now. I can’t even guess what he’d need for his tour.

I really just meant being the headliner in smaller venues vs. an opening act in an arena tour.

But Adam could put together a small-scale tour with dancers, a band and simple staging and play 2,000 seat venues instead of big arenas. Look at the You Tube video of “Crazy — It’s Adam, some dancers and a chair. I am certain that an Adam tour would have higher production costs than Cook but it doesn’t need to be a massive arena production either.

a great review for david a’s christmas cd… excerpts here, read more at the link…

David Archuleta – Christmas From the Heart

David Archuleta Is a Christmas Music Natural

Christmas From the Heart is the second studio album from David Archuleta, and, although it is a holiday collection, it is quite possibly a stronger album achievement than his last. His voice is perfectly suited for this type of material. David Archuleta’s voice is full and tremendously appealing to a wide range of listeners. He can stand up easily to big productions, but he avoids over singing and ever sounding bombastic. Christmas From the Heart is a holiday album you will happily return to in years to come…

David Archuleta’s Solid, Beautiful Voice at Christmas

There are no real missteps here. Christmas From the Heart is simply a solid, pleasing holiday album that will be welcome throughout the season and in years to come. If there is a lesson to learn for David Archuleta, it may be simply that his voice sounds best in the context of simple, uncomplicated accompaniment. Auto-tune and drum machine effects are not needed and likely even detract from a voice like Archuleta’s. He is a very talented traditional singer in the best sense of the term.

I agree. I have suspended logic when it comes to Adam. No one could have predicted the upcoming promo events — “2012″/TfF, TII, AMAs and Oprah!

  • Cate

Q3, who provides security for these events, the venue or the artist?

  • Valentin432

The best slot for Adam would be the 28th, right after his album drop. That’s the slot Beyonce had last year, the Saturday after her drop.

Yes, it probably would be the best date for him, usually we get info on host/musical performers for 4 shows so the 28th should be announced soon.

I am a little surprised that Carrie isn’t there, they love her at SNL so maybee she will get the 14th spot but Swift is booked for the 7th they may consider the 28th too.

Even more after the fiasco that was her appearance last year but considering what happened in the VMA’s this year not surprising.

Yup. Lady Gaga’s been playing elaborate shows at mid-sized theaters.

What happened with Taylor on SNL last year? Other than bad singing (that’s expected- sorry, she seems like a nice girl, just don’t like her “singing”).

I think there was a technical problem on her first song and she sounded really bad and looked confused afterwards. Altough it wasn’t as bad as when Ashley Simpson performed but she didn’t look good at all.
