Fox Reality Channel to shut down next year

The all-reality cable network, Fox Reality Channel, is expected to end its four-year run next March, according to the Los Angeles Times (and originally reported by The Wrap). News Corp. launched Fox Reality Channel in May 2005 during the height of primetime reality programming, but the channel, which was available in approximately 50 million homes, never caught on.

Fox is considering launching a new channel in its place. ‘With the changing cable landscape, we’ve made a strategic decision to shift some resources and refocus on emerging channels, ‘ said a Fox spokesman in a statement. ‘However, Fox Reality Channel will remain on our lineup for at least the next several months.’ The channel aired original content as well as reruns of reality programs such as The Amazing Race and So You Think You Can Dance.

Leona Lewis ‘punched’ at signing

Police have arrested a man over an alleged assault on 2006 X Factor winner Leona Lewis at a book signing.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said police were called to Waterstone’s book store at Piccadilly, London, but Lewis did not need hospital treatment.

Lewis’s spokesman said the singer had been signing autographs for around 90 minutes when “a guy came up and punched her to the side of the head”.

The spokesman added that Lewis was “understandably badly shaken”.

Blake Lewis’ Heartbreak on Vinyl also makes its debut this week, coming it at #135 on Nielsen SoundScan’s Top 200 and selling a little bit more than 4, 000 units. Who Is Max Martin? A Hitmaking ‘Beast’

Max MartinSure, it was Katy Perry who kissed a girl and Britney Spears who sang “Livin’ in sin is the new thing, ” but the words are actually those of Max Martin, a 38-year-old Swedish producer that some would argue is the biggest pop songwriter in the world.

“He was the guy who ushered in teen pop being more like a form of creative expression, ” Ann Powers, pop music critic for the L.A. Times tells PopEater. “Look at [producers] Stargate, Ryan Tedder — they wouldn’t exist without Max or the success he had. There’s been a huge shift in the 21st century towards appreciating mainstream pop and I would base that as a shift to when Max Martin started

Adam Lambert: The Jewish Mother Interview

‘There are thousands of women of a certain age out there who are just one Adam Lambert Google search away from crashing their computers, ‘ Newsweek’s Joan Raymond wrote in a June blog titled Why Cougars Crave Idol Runner-Up Adam Lambert. ‘The good news is that people who know about these things think that our little Lambert love-fest is downright mentally healthy.’

Carrie Underwood’s holiday special: I vote for more duets, fewer skits. You?

Happy holidays, PopWatchers, and don’t tell me it’s too early for dropping yule bombs, yo! You can already smell the imminent death of Halloween ‘” and the chemical scent of fauxflakes ‘” at my local Duane Reade, which means that Santa’s on his way. (He’s loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh.) (Sorry. Had to go there.)

Anyway, since you’re going to be waking up Saturday morning to find your next-door neighbor out on her front lawn setting up her Nativity scene, we might as well discuss Fox’s announcement this week that Carrie Underwood: An All-Star Holiday Special is coming to the network on Monday, Dec. 7, featuring living legend Dolly Parton, Brad Paisley, and (yes, yes, y’all!) David Cook. Generally, I’m pretty excited by this news: Much like garlic, the addition of Dolly Parton makes almost every dish a little tastier, and of course, anyone who’s seen the epic duet of ‘Go Your Own Way’ embedded below knows the kind of magic Carrie and Cookie can generate when they pass the mic.

My Interview with Dreamgirls Star Syesha Mercado

I interviewed Syesha Mercado over the phone today! She was so nice!

Syesha is currently rehearsing for the touring production of Dreamgirls where she plays Deena Jones (played by Beyonce in the film). The show opens at the Apollo Theater on Nov. 7 and will tour around the country until June 2010.

I was quite nervous leading up to the interview because as I understand it, Syesha had some issues with some stuff I had written about her in my blog last year. I started off by apologizing to her for anything I had posted that may have offended her, and she responded that ‘we have no drama.’ She said that she didn’t even know what the fuss was about even when people were tweeting her about it. As far as she’s concerned, she loves everyone. Yay! We love you too Syesha!

Sleep Eating Disorder? Paula Abdul Says Kara DioGuardi Raided Her Fridge

Kara DioGuardi has become a household name since becoming the fourth judge on “American Idol” last year, but her former co-star Paula Abdul wants us all to remember one thing – she was the one who discovered the songwriter-turned-reality star ten years ago. But having lived with DioGuardi, Abdul also discovered the musician suffered from an interesting eating issue.

“I literally discovered Kara and believed in her, we had lunch together and I told her that if she wants to give two weeks notice, I would move a stranger into my own home. She lived with me and we became the best roommates, we never fought, except she would sleep walk and eat, ” Abdul told Tarts after announcing the AMA nominations on Tuesday morning. “I’d wake up in the morning and I thought ‘did my dog do this?’ There was food on the ground. ‘What the heck?’ I thought. But she would have no recollection that she did it.”

Ofcom has received a total of 3, 885 complaints about the incident.

Johnson changed the lyrics of Jennifer Hudson’s song I’m Telling You, in which the lyrics refer to a male, so that the song from the point of view of a man singing to a woman. Minogue subsequently made a “joke” with Johnson, who has been the subject of tabloid stories suggesting he is bisexual, saying that “there was no need to switch the gender reference in that song”.

OMG! That must have been scary.

Adam Lambert: The Jewish Mother Interview

    I love this interview!

  2. So Max Martin was in a glam rock band called “It’s Alive”? Man I would love to find a video of that. I guess they only sold 30,000 records. Funny how things can turn around for a guy.

    ETA: Found one! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64znOMEwvWk

That is so awful about Leona Lewis. Of course TMZ was there to take a close up shot of her crying as she left the booksigning. They are such scum.

  3. Those TMZ folks always make me feel like I need to take a shower. In scalding hot water. With lye soap. Shudder.

Loved the Jewish Mom interview–“My people!” Liked her question about black holes and revelations. As an aside, I wonder why he chose to repeat that line in the song rather than singing the original “trials and tribulations” line. Anyone?

  4. X Factor’s Dannii Minogue draws almost 4,000 complaints to Ofcom

Since Johnson himself wasn’t bothered by it, I’m not sure why everyone else is. But I guess it could hurt his chances with bigoted viewers who weren’t already aware of his orientation. Can you imagine if one of the judges had said something similar to Adam during the run of AI? All Hell would have broken loose.

  5. Can you imagine if one of the judges had said something similar to Adam during the run of AI? All Hell would have broken loose.

Yep, and Adam would have loved it. It’s all about the”buzz” man.

  6. Adam Lambert: The Jewish Mother Interview

Great interview, I wonder why it is not coming out until now. There was another SNL reference here. I am just hoping.

  7. Yep, and Adam would have loved it. It’s all about the’ buzz’ man.

I’m not so sure about that. He was pretty clear that he didn’t want to discuss that during the show and have it overshadow his singing.

  8. MJ, Have fun!

and plz bring back some better blog software with better editing and page number access and smilies and all that good stuff!

  9. MJ, have fun!

Said it yesterday – that “Jewish Mother interview” is one of my alltime fav Adam interviews!

Interesting of all the signers who work with Max Martin, they mention Adam and Carrie as people likely to have future hits. I still would not be surprised if a Adam-Max Martin track was the first single.

Obviously, Martin is happy to remain in the background, churning out hits. “He’s a beast,” Wolf says. “He takes his work very seriously. He never stops.” Fans shouldn’t expect the run to stop anytime soon, as he is collaborating with Adam Lambert and Carrie Underwood. “He definitely has the ability to tailor a song to a specific artist,” Hancock says. “When you hear a Max Martin record, you don’t necessarily say it’s a Max Martin record, you say it’s a Kelly Clarkson smash.”

Thanks for posting the Max Martin video.

  10. Have fun MJ will you have time to hit some of those slot machines?…….Thanks Will for the linK about blogworld…

Leona thats scary I wonder if that will nix future signings or a wake up call for more security…I guess allot of people are writing books..

Season 5 was one of my favs just wondering what channel it is on in mn don’t get tv-guide?

Adam fans–is there a time or is it just a rumor that he will appear on Oprah?

  11. Imagine what would have happened if this was Simon talking about Adam on Idol! Somehow I think the FCC (the closest thing to OfCom in the US) would have gotting more than 4,000 complaints. But I wonder how many complaints went to the TV station and X-Factor producers?

Ofcom has received a total of 3,885 complaints about the incident.

Johnson changed the lyrics of Jennifer Hudson’s song I’m Telling You, in which the lyrics refer to a male, so that the song from the point of view of a man singing to a woman. 12. Was Leona raised by wolves or something – I honestly can’t see why she would be writing a memoir as this point. Granted i don’t know much about her but what I do know isn’t all that interesting.

  13. Imagine what would have happened if this was Simon talking about Adam on Idol! Somehow I think the FCC (the closest thing to OfCom in the US) would have gotting more than 4,000 complaints.

The complaints would fall on deaf ears at the FCC, since there is no FCC regulation against outing someone on national TV. (That I’m aware of anyway.) And I doubt it violates any broadcast standards in Britain. The complaints should go to Minogue herself or the show’s producers, not the government.

  14. The Carrie Walmart soundcheck vid is great!

    Some other interesting news:

  20. ‘I think more women would be happier if they channeled their inner 14-year-old girls once in a while.’

Lambert, Berman believes, somehow manages to be ‘hardcore, crazy, humble, adorable, charismatic, sweet and mind-blowingly talented,’ all in one package. ‘He’s a study in contrasts, and the gay thing doesn’t matter,’ she says. ‘Anyone who can get women to talk, giggle and get their mojo back is fine by me.’ ’ ¨

I loved this quote in Gail’s The Jewish Mother Interview and I so agree with Dr. Berman’s philosopy. And I’ll extend this sentiment to all of the “mother” fans out in idol land who really like their fav whether it be Adam, Kris, the Davids, or Danny.

It’s just fun to “adore” some one from afar and to get hyped about their struggles and achievements, and the best part is that I’m not, in reality, attached to these guys so their missteps, though they may make me cringe, don’t impact me like the “real” people in my daily life.

I think that having this outlet im my life helps me cope with all the things I am going through…since it brings in tons of emotion without the abject stress those emotions may cause. So long live us “Idol” moms and may all our kids (the girls too) get the success they deserve.

Country will get a little bit rock and roll with the addition of Daughtry to the roster of performers for the 43rd annual Country Music Association Awards, the CMA tells PEOPLE.

The show ‘“ to air on ABC Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 8 p.m. ET ‘“ will feature a duet between the five-man band (fronted by 2006 American Idol finalist Chris Daughtry) and Vince Gill on “Tennessee Line,” a track off Daughtry’s most recent album that featured Gill on harmony vocals.

The CMA also announced that Tim McGraw will be returning to perform for the first time in four years.

  24. Kris just was on Q102 in Cincinnati. Sounded surprisingly awake considering he had tweeted about still being awake just a couple of hours earlier. Wish I could have seen his face when they were playing “Would You Rather”

    Highlights:

Besides music he’s good at watching football
Hates gossip, would rather not be talked about at all
Katy supposedly was pregnant with Adam’s alien baby
    Naked body
Tobacco spit in Coke cans (ew, gross, Papa Allen)

She is Julie Moran and will host this year’s preshow —

dick clark productions will also air a live digital pre-show hosted by Julie Moran from the 2009 American Music Awards red carpet available on ABC.com, USTREAM.com and mycokerewards.com and mycoke.com.

Last year the preshow was televised on ABC and called American Music Awards Red Carpet Live. 2008 was the first time in 36-years the AMA pre-show it was televised — just online this year. Also, as far as I can tell, David Cook was the first performer to ever be on a AMA preshow.

  28. Listened to the Kris Allen interview on Q102 in Cincinnati. Not much in the way of new news but I did find the exchange about LLWD very interesting. One of the hosts made a comment about Kris and the Script being in a tug-of-war to see who would sing LLWD. Kris made a comment kinda under his breath or very low that he would win. Would that mean that LLWD was purchased outright and/or a contractural stipulation that the Script can no longer sing the song. How do these things ususally work?

It sounded to me like he will be singing LLWD tonight.

  29. yeahyeahsure

Daughtry will perform at the CMAs with Vince Gill!

With the weakness in the rock music business — bet Daughtry is considering doing some country-crossover music.

    Depends on the contract.

  32. The complaints would fall on deaf ears at the FCC, since there is no FCC regulation against outing someone on national TV. (That I’m aware of anyway.)

It’s called slander if it is untrue and you can be sued for that. In Britain Jason Donovan successfully sued the style magazine The Face for libel after they suggested he was gay, although it turned out to be a pyrrhic victory because it badly damaged his own career for years (because the hip crowd sympathised with the magazine). I think it is easier to sue for slander/libel in the UK than the US because, among other things, there is no First Amendment in the UK. But even without the threat of being sued, outing someone is generally something most broadcaster won’t do even in the States, considering that so many people well-known to be gay by other people in the entertainment business were never exposed in their life time.

It’s a tricky minefield anyway. Perhaps because it is easier to sue here, people on TV are generally wary of naming well-known people for whatever they may be. There was the case of Ulrika Johnson who claimed she was raped by a TV personality but refused to name him. Someone else however name the rapist (perhaps accidentally, perhaps not) as John Leslie, and John Leslie’s TV career effectively ended there and then. There is a similar case with Katie Price (AKA Jordan) just recently claiming to have been raped by a TV celebrity – his name is apparently known by some people, but no one yet dared publish it. Hard to know if her allegations are true.

  33. Thanks Q3, I really love Kid Rock’s and Robert Plants/Allison Kraus last albums

  36. I think Skype is the computer version of video conferencing. So he’ll be viewable but he won’t be in the studio. Kind of like “satellite” broadcast.

  37. Based on Kris’ comment in the Cincinnatti Q102 interview, looks like he could be performing LLWD when he performs with The Script. I wonder if they will have him perform it with The Script. Does he have a band yet?

So far the adds on radio aren’t driving sales of LLWD (now at #141 on iTunes) — I hope the upcoming Kris appearances help push the song back up the charts.

  38. I saw this on TWOP.

“The DJs were really impressed by both the song and Kris, talking about how great he’s been with this whole charity event, they mentioned how he wasn’t getting paid for any of it and doing all the press, plus the show at Seton High School, the sound check before and then the actual show.”

Is it the usual practice for artists to not get paid for appearing at charity events like this? Just wondering…

Skype has a high-quality video conferencing product that Oprah has featuered in the past. He will be on a giant screen. She even did a show on Skype:

On the show, titled ‘Where the Skype Are You?,’ Winfrey conducts video chats ‘” via Skype ‘” with people in weird places.

Is it the usual practice for artists to not get paid for appearing at charity events like this? Just wondering’ ¦

Yes, it is typical to both not get paid and to pick up all the expenses.

Also, most opening acts do not get paid and have to pick up their expenses. Thankfully, the 19R/Jive is paying for all this stuff (out of future profits — of course).

  41. Kris has a banner ad on allaccess.com now. Outside of the ad I saw on iTunes, I think this is the first advertising I’ve really seen for the single

  43. Is it the usual practice for artists to not get paid for appearing at charity events like this? Just wondering’ ¦

Yes. It is the usual practice.

    1) Record label pays for concert costs.
    2) Artists perform for free.
    3) Radio station pockets ticket and sponsorship revenue.
    4) Radio station spins artists song.

Why do you think the Bosom Ball station in Cinci and the station in Chicago doing the Fray concert where two of the first to spin his record? It’s not because the DJs voted. They may love an artist anyway, but that’s not why the artist does the free concert and that’s not why the song gets added and played. It’s a business. The point of a radio station is to sell its airtime and generate revenues.

  44. That’s a great ad on All Access. Jive should be bragging about being the 2nd most added this week and the massive Z100 support, but personally I would have left the download numbers off YMMV.

  45. Finally, clarification on what will run with MJ’s TII – it will be part of the a special 2012 trailer. Still can’t confirm whether the TfM MV will be released before this special trailer or not. From MovieWeb:

ADAM LAMBERT AND MICHAEL JACKSON TO SHARE MOVIE SCREENS

American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert’s “Time for Miracles” video will receive the big-screen treatment as part of the trailer for Roland Emmerich’s doomsday movie 2012, which will precede screenings of the Michael Jackson documentary This Is It beginning October 28, Lambert told MTV News Tuesday. The single is due to be released on October 18 in advance of the November 24 release of Lambert’s first post-Idol CD. In the video, he said, “I’m just walking through looking straight at the camera singing the song, and there’s a riot going on around me — people being tossed in front of me, looting, you know, people being arrested. … That was pretty wild, to try to stay focused on the song while that was happening.” The goings-on, he said, was intended to be “reminiscent of what happens in 2012.”

  46. That’s a great ad on All Access. Jive should be bragging about being the 2nd most added this week and the massive Z100 support, but personally I would have left the download numbers off YMMV.

Yep, I would have left off the download #’s too but peeps may think that is a big number if they don’t have anything to compare it to (Carrie Underwood) so it is still good I guess.

  47. With the weakness in the rock music business ‘” bet Daughtry is considering doing some country-crossover music.

The rock music business is weak because they keep spitting in the eye of up and coming rockers. Daughtry and Cook, to name two. Funny enough, some old school rockers have reached out to them, as Van Zandt has to Cook but the industry, itself, is rock snob central…. So, good for Chris! Do what you have to do!

    the Eagles

The Eagles have always had a country rock vibe. All the way back to Desperado, Peaceful, Easy Feeling, etc.

  48. The tweeter girl is saying Kris is playing the viola with other student. Why can’t I be at that school.

  49. Someone was saying they video last year for David A. I wonder if that means well get video of Kris at the school. Also his favorite song to sing in the shower is Brittney Spears hit me baby one more time.

  50. The Eagles have always had a country rock vibe. All the way back to Desperado, Peaceful, Easy Feeling, etc

I was going to say the same thing. They call it “California Rock” – at least they did back in the 70’s

  51. I know if is just an Examiner poll and that Archie fans know how to vote but the result of this one was too amazing to pass on:

David Archuleta vs. Bob Dylan: Christmas and hearts in two new albums (Poll)

Which Christmas album are you interested in?
Christmas From The Heart by David Archuleta 97% (1,686 votes)
Christmas In The Heart by Bob Dylan 2% (28 votes)
I want both of them! 1% (12 votes)
    Neither. 1% (16 votes)
    Total Votes: 1,742

Have you listened to Bob Dylan’s album? It’s no contest! YMMV, of course. Here’s what one reviewer said about it…

Okay, the Bob Dylan Christmas album is definitely worth listening to, but it might scare the children. Bob sounds like he’s singing with the chestnuts roasted on the open fire in his mouth. Each breath/gasp for breath also seems like it could be his last. Do I still love it? Kind of! (Although it sort of comes off like a spooky Halloween album.) Feast your ears on these samples. (Send the kids out of the room first.)

  52. With the weakness in the rock music business ‘” bet Daughtry is considering doing some country-crossover music.

Apparently he can’t make it in the rock music business since his sales have fallen flat.

  53. girlygirl, here’s a link to a Matt radio interview from @TheGiraudSquad, which is probably the one he talks about today:

@Jennasg They have podcast as well so hopefully they will put it up! Here is the link. http://bit.ly/4lmWco

Matt talks about doing a country duet in Nashville (set up by Billy Dean)
but stresses he is dabbling and will not make a country record.

He also talks about being managed by 19M, and says they are taking good care of him.

He plugs his previous and upcoming appearances.

  54. girlygirl: Kris has a banner ad on allaccess.com now. Outside of the ad I saw on iTunes, I think this is the first advertising I’ve really seen for the single

    http://www.allaccess.com/

Glad they bought the homepage banner for Kris. But — JMHO — What is 19R/Jive thinking? All three headlines are weak — but why lead with the 40,000 digital sales number? Couldn’t they twist the #2 Top 40 Adds — couldn’t they put together a marketing plan to create a #1 stat?

  55. Judging by the tweets, I need video of Kris’ appearance at Seton right NOW

He sang Hit Me baby One More Time?

    He played the viola?

He sang LLWD live for the 1st time?

He did the Wigalow (which I guess is some sort of odd dance)?

Cool, Q3. I posted over on the Adam in the Studio thread that IMDB picked up the same story:

    http://www.imdb.com/news/ni1081666/

This is really making the ‘movie industry’ rounds!”

I love that underneath the article there are 3 categories of other newsworthy related stuff to the article:

    Michael Jackson – 3 links
    American Idol – 3 links
    Adam Lambert – 3 links

The Glittery One gets his own category! Cool!

  57. After the world premiere live peformance of Live Like We’re Dyying, where what the girl in attendance tweeted!

    Just finished singing. So cute!

  58. Girlygirl I was looking at the Billboard Charts. Are they for this week? I did not see Kris but I am not an expert at looking even if it means scrollling down the page. Have you seen it yet?

  59. Q3,
Maybe Jive is satified with the numbers so far? They might have a game plan that we may not understand but is working for them.

  60. Alaadam

Haven’t looked at the charts yet. It’s possible Kris fell out of the Top 100 if you didn’t see him on there, though. I will go look at them now.

Okay, it looks like he’s not in the Top 100. Which sucks. But I’m confused, because he was #89 last week, right? But when I clicked on the link for the biggest falls on the chart, he wasn’t on that list either, even though the last song on that chart dropped 10 spots, which is fewer than LLWD would have dropped if it’s no longer in the Top 100. Maybe it only lists the biggest falls by songs that are still in the Top 100? IDK.

Anyway, not good. I thought the extra airplay would balance out the drop in sales, but I guess not. Maybe it will re-enter the charts next week, now that he got all those new station adds.

  61. Can anyone tell me what time on October 18 would be standard? Are we talking 12:01 a.m.?

Where is it released to? iTunes? Amazon?

I am sure this has been covered already but frankly I went into sensory overload this week and I cannot remember anything since the MichellinMan/Gumby hair discussion yesterday.

Bottom line: Where can I get TFM the fastest on October 18?

  62. Q3: With the weakness in the rock music business ‘” bet Daughtry is considering doing some country-crossover music.

I think that Daughtry doing some country-crossover work would be a great move.

Sassycatz: The rock music business is weak because they keep spitting in the eye of up and coming rockers. Daughtry and Cook, to name two. Funny enough, some old school rockers have reached out to them, as Van Zandt has to Cook but the industry, itself, is rock snob central’ ¦. So, good for Chris! Do what you have to do!

Rock has been declining in music market share since the mid-1990’s — due to the rise of urban/Hip-Hop/Rap and the increased popularity of Pop music. Long before anyone every thought of Daughtry or Cook.

googletot: Apparently he can’t make it in the rock music business since his sales have fallen flat.

Rock-Country crossovers are as old as rock music. In 1940s and 1950s Rock and Roll, Rhythm and Blues, Gospel and Country Music were all intertwined. Most famous Rock-Country-Gospel crossover artist is probably Elvis.

Frankly, I am hoping that maybe rock artists being involved with Country music can get some of the rock artists back to the core driving force of rock again and crush the heinous drek currently masquerading as Rock — like Nickelback. Of couse, my hope may be overoptimistic based on the Bon Jovi single — but maybe the new album will be better. YMMV.

Well first off, agree about that ad being great for Kris and agreed they should be proud of how well they are doing with radio add ons this week. Also agree that maybe keeping how many downloads it has would be good. That is a site targeted more to people in the industry, yes? So they would definitely have a pretty good idea of what a good number of downloads would be.

  64. Truthiness: Well first off, agree about that ad being great for Kris and agreed they should be proud of how well they are doing with radio add ons this week. I only recall seeing the download unit number used on one of these ads when it is really impressive. They usually focus on radio stats or chart #’s.

  65. I only recall seeing the download unit number used on one of these ads when it is really impressive. They usually focus on radio stats or chart #’s.

    So why is it there?

  66. OK, random thing but it made me laugh… my 4 yr old loves to watch dinosaur movies on YouTube so I carefully make him a non-scary playlist… and he was in there watching and all of a sudden he yells, “Mom! It’s Adam!” Confuzzled, I go in to look… little dude recognized Adam’s voice on “Mad World” playing in the background of one of the videos… So I guess Adam’s voice is pretty distinctive if my 4 yr old recognized it just like that ;) . Than again, he loves to listen to his Ring of Fire on my iPod, so maybe he’s just a fan (loves Cookie bestest, though, of course, ha!!!).

  67. Glad they bought the homepage banner for Kris. But ‘” JMHO ‘” What is 19R/Jive thinking? All three headlines are weak ‘” but why lead with the 40,000 digital sales number? Couldn’t they twist the #2 Top 40 Adds ‘” couldn’t they put together a marketing plan to create a #1 stat?

I agree. Top 40 adds and #1 sales are both good headlines to bring out LLWD and Kris’ name. To me, the former is more like an ads or recommendation, while the latter is more like a consumer’s choice. imo the latter has more influence on purchase decision making. But of course, to get #1 sales, a song needs to be heard by large enough music buyers. So let’s give LLWD and Jiva some time.

  68. Is it the usual practice for artists to not get paid for appearing at charity events like this? Just wondering’ ¦

Some artist are paid, which kinda of takes away from the whole charity thing. But yes, I’ve read that it happens. And I guess that’s why when artist don’t ask for a thing they’re praised for that.

  69. alaadam: Girlygirl I was looking at the Billboard Charts. Are they for this week? I did not see Kris but I am not an expert at looking even if it means scrollling down the page. Have you seen it yet?

LLWD is not on BB Hot 100 for Week of 10/24/09.

  70. Aww, too bad about Adam only being on by phone on Oprah, and even worse that it couldn’t be closer to the actual album launch – which was my big hope (though with a gig like Oprah, you definitely have to take what you can get!) Still, ideal situation would have been for him to appear on her show the week before the album drops.

As for Billboard – I just checked too. I didn’t see Kris on the Hot 100. He was in the 70’s (iirc) last week, and this week seemed to have weaker download sales, and though a lot of stations have added LLWD, I don’t know that spin numbers have increased enough (yet) to keep him on the chart.

But I think with the PR campaign ramping up for him officially now, everything will still be ok for him.

  71. LLWD is not on BB Hot 100 for Week of 10/24/09.

Was it there last week? Why does it say week of 10/24/09 when it hasn’t gotten here yet?

  72. OK, random thing but it made me laugh’ ¦ my 4 yr old loves to watch dinosaur movies on YouTube so I carefully make him a non-scary playlist’ ¦ and he was in there watching and all of a sudden he yells, ‘Mom! aww cuteness!

  73. Aww, too bad about Adam only being on by phone on Oprah

I thought it was confirmed that ADam would be on Oprah by satellite?? Not just by phone but by skype-we can still see him.

  74. The girl who was tweeting from Kris’ appearance at Seton HS is implying there is video..(and she took pictures)

    AbbyLouisee

    # make sure to check youtube tonight for videos of kris at seton high school :) ill post links if i find them17 minutes ago from API

EDIT: OMG — I just looked at who is following this girl on twitter. One of her followers is Jim Cantiello! ROFLMAO — I see you, Jim, stalking HS girls for info on Kris!

  75. Tess: I loved this quote in Gail’s The Jewish Mother Interview and I so agree with Dr. Berman’s philosopy. And I’ll extend this sentiment to all of the ‘mother’ fans out in idol land who really like their fav whether it be Adam, Kris, the Davids, or Danny.

Loved this interview too. My 14-year-old daughter is kinda horrified at her mother’s “obsession” with Adam (she prefers Kris) and said with some relief, after I expressed concern that he’d produce “Lady Gaga”-type music, “Oh, so you feel like his mother.” Yes, dear.

  76. Alaadam

LLWD was on the Billboard Top 100 last week. I think at #89. It’s not good that it dropped off this week, but as I said earlier, maybe the increased adds from the radio stations and some more promotion will get it back on there for next week. We’ll see.

(I have no idea why the charts always say for the week of…then give a date almost 2 weeks later. That makes no sense to me)

  77. So far the adds on radio aren’t driving sales of LLWD (now at #141 on iTunes) ‘” I hope the upcoming Kris appearances help push the song back up the charts

Well it is only two days since it’s been added, so I think that it’s a bit early to say that radio play isn’t going to help Kris’s iTunes sales numbers. I say give it a week or two. Or even more, as has been discussed, things that are tops on the charts now, can take a while to have gotten there. So I’m hopeful that all this increased radio play will have an effect sooner than later, but it’s still not unsual to take awhile.

  78. Well, with R/L intruding, I have been waaay out of the loop these days! (And maybe I still have adam storm fatigue ;))

So here are a few thoughts:

I was also duped by negative neil/positive neil, but it was kind of interesting to see the tweets (of course I tweeted–once–and then sort of waited to see what would happen).

That interview about the AMAs is great. I used to watch Jai, but I didn’t recognize him or realize he and Adam were friends! (Now I have to follow him, of course. ;)) LOL on the gloves. It is a bit ironic that he wears them and of course they were MJ’s trademark. (Not our MJ, but I hope the conference is a blast!)

I posted this yesterday, but the American Jewish (Jewish American?) article was one of my favorites. Yes, the author was a fangirl (secret autograph, LOL), but the questions were interesting; I hadn’t heard some of them before. I am also a Diet Jew! I loved that she asked about his parents, b/c it wasn’t tabloid stuff, it was just about what his family life was like, and that clearly meant a lot to him. His parents are rad.

I agree: Everyone seems pretty starstruck by Adam, and he in turn seems just so happy to part of this and is just having a blast! (He reminds me of a young kid in a toy store, who gets to take him his favorites but shares them w/ his friends and siblings!) I hope he never become a diva (unlikely). When you think of all the years he put into this, and how horribly he was often treated (especially by the bastards at Wicked), you are even more excited for him.

I don’t have time to get into some heavy-duty discussions. I just want this all to work out for Adam, Kris, and Allison. And I hope this works out for Alisan, b/c she is such a good friend of Adam’s (Aimee Mayo has apparently disappeared).

I didn’t get a chance to ask Adam an Oprah question (I don’t have anything new to ask, anyway), but I can’t wait to see the show. I just want TFM and TBD (the 1st single) to be released already! I need new Adam music!

I can’t believe I haven’t heard LLWD locally yet (on the radio), but hopefully soon. I am not sure Allison’s will get played; I think it’s a bit too popish, at least for the stations I listen to.

Off to listen to Kris’s interview.

  79. Aww, too bad about Adam only being on by phone on Oprah

I thought it was confirmed that ADam would be on Oprah by satellite?? Not just by phone but by skype-we can still see him.

Still not in person, so that sucks. But still, I wasn’t expecting any kind of Oprah appearance, so it’s still cool for Adam. Though honestly, totally not as cool or good for him as performing and/or talking to Oprah live would have been. No chance for that interaction that Oprah watchers probably like so much.

  80. I can’t wait for video and pictures. Kris singing Brittney, happy B.Day. LLWD live for the first time. Doing what every the name from the dance, and playing the viola. Sounds like alot of fun. Am not worry about single right now if in the next few weeks or after the album comes out and his not doing well then I’ll start worrying. Well am going to get off of the computer and get some stuff done in this house. Have alot to do before are move next month.

  81. I say give it a week or two. Or even more, as has been discussed, things that are tops on the charts now, can take a while to have gotten there. So I’m hopeful that all this increased radio play will have an effect sooner than later, but it’s still not unsual to take awhile.

I agree- last week I checked out the top 5 on Itunes and 2 of the songs have been slow builders. One was released back in July ( Fireflies) and the other in August ( Whatcha Say)

Is Adam going to be on Oprah today, or later on?

  82. (I have no idea why the charts always say for the week of’ ¦then give a date almost 2 weeks later. That makes no sense to me)

Billboard magazine pre-dates the internet. In the old days, there wasn’t even direct-to-print. They would have to create plates for every page and then truck the magazine out to the stores from a central printing place. The process probably took a couple of days to a week to manage. Who wants a crummy chart dated two weeks ago? Better to just date it two weeks in the future when people will finally get to read it.

Also agree that maybe keeping how many downloads it has would be good. That is a site targeted more to people in the industry, yes? So they would definitely have a pretty good idea of what a good number of downloads would be.

Yes, AllAccess is targeted at the industry. You can tell that if you read their articles. They would definitely know what a good number of downloads would be. IDK, maybe Jive is totally playing the “New Artist” angle. 40K is impressive for the amount of spins he’s currently getting. Not great for an Idol, but great for a new artist. I noticed they didn’t mention American Idol.

Anyway, it’s nice to see an ad.

  83. The Eagles have always had a country rock vibe.

They were country rock, always have been. They were in fact the biggest country rock act, one of those that helped popularise this genre. I don’t think anyone who listened to Lyin’ Eyes can called it anything but country rock. They were closely associated at the beginning with other country rock people like Linda Ronstadt and Jackson Browne.

  84. Actually, Kirsten, you might be right. People that don’t follow AI would totally think Adam won. Maybe being “who” (tm VFTW) will help Kris here! LOL

  85. EDIT: OMG ‘” I just looked at who is following this girl on twitter. One of her followers is Jim Cantiello! ROFLMAO ‘” I see you, Jim, stalking HS girls for info on Kris!

    too funny!!! good catch girlygirl!!

  86. Ozarka, you are a great ambassador for David Archuleta. I watched casually last year and have gotten much more exposure to Archie through the information and videos you post here. Good job!!

I have great faith in Kris and think his album will sell. And in total, I think 19M has done a good job marketing Kris. I have less confidence in the 19R/Jive marketing/promo efforts.

I do not believe LLWD is going to be a big hit, but it should be selling better than it is.

I will not cut Jive a break until they get their act together in marketing of LLWD. Setting aside the dubious choice of this as Kris’ lead single — and I know that many people think its a great choice, OK YMMV. What has Jive done right?

    1. The released the song with unclear communication on a Friday — no PR, multiple dates given to the press, MTV News had the release date as the following Tuesday.

    2. The put LLWD out with the Graphic cover that looked like it came from Hi-Fi Records or some other low-budget indie house. Then they released a new cover (much better!) 2 weeks later.

    3. They have got Kris some top appearance slots but didn’t properly prep him. His PR folks should have done this — it is their job.

    4. They didn’t preempt the two potential issues with LLWD — the previous The Script release (could have handled it with a press release or clearly thought out interview story) — and the first line (which they should have changed the lyrics to avoid the jokes).

    5. They are getting the single radio adds but that is just a matter of money — were is the PR/promo campaign? They are spending money but nothing seems to be getting traction.

When 19R/Jive does something right, I’ll be the first one to comment and say “Bravo”. Here’s hopign I get to type that comment soon!

  88. Chris said he wanted his album to be more country; I don’t really hear it, except for one tune, Tennessee Line. It’s not a bad song, but it isn’t one of my favorites on the album, either. I wouldn’t mind him going a little more that route and a little less Nickelback. And yes, the Eagles were completely country rock (to wit: Take it Easy). I remember someone last year (EW?) said Cook’s My Last Request sounded a bit country, but I still don’t think so.

Adam is on Oprah Friday, I believe. If not, it’s still TBD (just like his album and song ;)).

  89. Kris’s radio interview was cute, and I think his dry sense of humor and personality came out a bit more than in other interviews I’ve heard. But I must say I worry for him when he says that he’d rather not be talked about at all than be gossiped about.

While his self-effacing, low-key personality is part of his charm, I think an artist seeking to establish himself in the music industry needs to recognize the importance of generating buzz.

While AI has given Kris a fabulous opportunity for exposure, it is certainly no guarantee of success. At this stage of his career, being overly humble and trying to avoid the spotlight is not the way to go. Enthusiasm is contagious, and right now, it’s in some measure up to Kris to generate excitement about his work. Right now, I’m just not seeing it, and that’s unfortunate, because he is obviously talented and loves creating music and I’d like to see him be successful.

  90. Instead of paying attention in class, that Seton HS girl is still tweeting (ah – HS!!!). But she seems very sweet and hasn’t been scared off by the people asking her questions.

  91. “I agree- last week I checked out the top 5 on Itunes and 2 of the songs have been slow builders. One was released back in July ( Fireflies) and the other in August ( Whatcha Say)”

It never seem fair to me to compare any Idol single to truly new artists like Owl City and the Whatcha Say guy (whose name I can’t remember).Their songs made it the old fashioned way w/o the benefit of the biggest show on TV. No name recognition for these artists at the beginning at all. So it makes sense that their singles took months to climb the charts.

I think it’s more realistic to compare Idol debut singles to each other. The song to compare LLYD to is Tattoo by Jordin. That also started slowly and built its sales on radio play.

  92. But I must say I worry for him when he says that he’d rather not be talked about at all than be gossiped about.

He can’t seem to make up his mind though, since later in the interview he said articles like the one saying he was divorcing Katy are hilarious and don’t bother him at all.

His name is Jason Derula. But ditto on everything you said jpfan.

  94. I think Kris doesn’t want to be gossiped about. He likely wouldn’t mind being talked about as long as the focus was on his music. He wants to keep his private life private. Nothing wrong with that. Much better than having paparazzi invading your life.

And OMG, that video of Archie doing the Wigalow at Seton HS last year was too funny. The SCREAMS! Yikes. Why do I have a feeling Kris’ attempt at the Wigalow will end up looking like that awkward chicken dance of his?

  95. 5. They are getting the single radio adds but that is just a matter of money

It has long been illegal to pay money to radio stations for adds. Sure, artists will offer to do free PR concerts, but the darn song still has to meet their standards. If my mother offered them money to play the crap out of her song and feature her in a concert, I’m quite reasonably certain the station would say “NO”. I love the lady, but she can’t sing and stations without listners aren’t going to be in the biz for very long.

If all it took was money, record labels wouldn’t have to try so hard to find a hit.

‘” were is the PR/promo campaign?

There is an ad on AllAccess and he’s getting airplay. Airplay is PR. The AllAccess ad is intended to increase airplay. Airplay typically does a good job of generating sales. He’s also doing concerts for radios which again, increases airplay. He’ll hit the television shows when his CD comes out. I don’t see what they are doing as being all that unusual from what is typically done for all artists.

I still think something went wonky with an earlier photo-shoot (probably Kris being sick and looking like something the cat dragged in) and that’s why we are seeing these cover shots so late.

They are spending money but nothing seems to be getting traction.

I’d call getting 37 ads this week on radio to be gaining some traction. If you consider that Jive had the 1st and 2nd most added songs this week, they are doing something right.

  96. Based on the best info I can find Adam’s appearance will be via satelite or Skype video conference and will be recorded on Friday. Air date not released. That means it is not audio phone. Several Adam fans have reported being interviewed about questions they want to ask Adam and being told they are in the first few rows and may get to ask a question. That sounds like an entire Adam show — or at least a major segment.

    jersey
Actually, Kirsten, you might be right. People that don’t follow AI would totally think Adam won. Maybe being ‘who’ (tm VFTW) will help Kris here! LOL

I don’t think that’s really true — I think SuBo and Adam are the two most famous #2’s in the world. SuBo is probably more famous that Adam!

I would agree, if you are evaluating Kris’s success as an American Idol winner. However, if you are evaluating his success as a musician, then it makes more sense. It really all depends on what is meant by ‘success’.

  98. David Archuleta ‘Christmas From The Heart’ Album Review

Below is our review of each song on the album ‘“ but let us just say that overall the CD is one of the best holiday albums we have heard. Many of our favorite Christmas songs are included on the CD and David makes each song his own by adding special changes and melodies that aren’t normally on the tracks.

  100. Peabody man suffers fatal heart attack at concert

A Peabody man suffered a fatal heart attack at the Kelly Clarkson concert at Boston University on Tuesday night, Boston University officials said today.

BU spokesman Colin Riley said the 38-year-old man, who was not identified, collapsed during the pop singer’s show at Agganis Arena shortly before 10 p.m.

I think it’s more realistic to compare Idol debut singles to each other. The song to compare LLYD to is Tattoo by Jordin. That also started slowly and built its sales on radio play.

I agree to a point. I think when it comes to singles you can compare idols to each other relative to the first few week’s worth of sales. But in terms of gaining airplay… I don’t think idol comes into it too much. PDs don’t add idols just because of who they are. The song has to be good. Then an audience have to respond to it. If only idol fans request that usually won’t make much of a difference.

  102. I think it’s more realistic to compare Idol debut singles to each other. The song to compare LLYD to is Tattoo by Jordin. That also started slowly and built its sales on radio play.

I’m gonna have to ( respectfully) disagree with you here jpfan. For whatever reason, AI/ Kris fans were not there to buy his first single. The same can be said for Jordan. Fans inside the AI bubble buy the record when it comes out or buy the whole album. As far as their debut single, they are starting off like any new artist, IMHO. Another case in point- Clay Aiken. His first week sales for his album were phenominal because of his fan base, but his first single I think only made it to #37 on billboard.

  103. Kris sounds really good doing the single.

Kristen – good catch on the AllAccess ad. No mention of Kris winning Idol at all. Maybe Idol is a turn off to radio, who knows.

Kris is starting off like any new artist who 30 million people saw win a talent show on America’s biggest TV show. Now does that affect radio. Yes, if he puts out a song that fits the genre of a particular stations. You’d think coming of Idol would be seen as a good thing these days – Kelly, Jordin, Daughtry, Carrie are all huge on radio.

  104. The Seton HS stuff by Kris sounds great! Viola playing, “Hit Me Baby One More Time,” and first live performance of LLWD. ETA: dang those kids are good. Hope we get some good and full ones.

And benefit concert tonight, yes? Well that I know we’ll get good YouTubes out of, considering all the internet peeps that will be there.

  105. David Cook will be ‘In Control’ on Star 101.3 fm San Francisco, details will be announced later. YAY!! my home town radio station.

    Lucky you!!!

A Peabody man suffered a fatal heart attack at the Kelly Clarkson concert at Boston University on Tuesday night

    And jeez, that sucks :(

  106. I am confident sales of LLWD will follow increased spin count. That’s the way it works. I’ve been watching the spin counts, and they’ve been increasing steadily almost every day. Yesterday his spins were over 100 for the first time, and that will build on itself. (But JFC, come on West Coast, add the song!).

I’m very happy to hear about the All Access ad, and yesterday Samantha Ronson featured LLWD as her Twitter song of the day, with a link to iTunes (thank you!), not just a link to YouTube. I hope to see an iTunes banner in the next couple of weeks as the spins pick up.

The song is and will continue to catch on. Once the music video is released, it will garner even more attention. This is all building toward the CD release, and I do agree with Kirsten that Kris being so sick at the tail end of the tour probably fouled up a few things, not the least of which was likely a photo shoot for the single cover.

  107. Rock has been declining in music market share since the mid-1990’s ‘” due to the rise of urban/Hip-Hop/Rap and the increased popularity of Pop music. Long before anyone every thought of Daughtry or Cook.

Well, naturally, I’m not blaming the decline of rock music on the fact that Daughtry and Cook have had trouble getting on rock radio or being covered by the rock press — whatever that is. They’re just examples because this is a site that follows Idol. What I am saying is that rock music can be very unwelcoming to newcomers. Country does well because it’s very accepting and so more new artists are turning to it just to get someone to listen to them. A style of music can’t be reinvigorated if you keep ignoring or dissing the next generation of artists.

  108. Looking forward to the entire youtube of LLWD. Any reason these were only partial?

Kris’s plaid has rubbed off onto other guitarists! I still like him in button down non-plaid, like in the video.

  109. For whatever reason, AI/ Kris fans were not there to buy his first single.

I think a lot of them bought the Itunes pass and are just waiting for the album

  111. I think the concern that is being expressed concerning Kris is a result of the dynamics of the winner/runner up situation as opposed to any fault of Kris, his PR team or Jive and the fact that, apparently, Kris’ core fan base isn’t as active as the David fans were last year.

When you have a very extensive fan base and very active fan sites like David A. had and has they were and are very good at getting the word out for a single release, appearances, radio shows, etc. This core base really propelled the sales for “Crush” the first few weeks…in truth the sales have been much better than his airplay would have ever indicated. Kris’ fans, as far as I can tell, don’t seem to have this rabid need to promote their guy via twitter or text or fan sites or bombarding online sites to let peeps know Kris’ single is out there. Hence, he does seem to be “coming out” much more like a new Artist than an Idol winner.

Also, there has been so much going on about the runner up, this year, that it seems that Kris isn’t getting the roll-out that he deserves. But, so far, it looks like Jive and his management are virtually carbon copying the roll-out that Archie had last year..including the trip to Seton High.

I’ll also agree that great guy that Kris is and wonderful singer that he is, Kris just isn’t a media magnet. He’s married, Christian, low-key, small town boy who sings with a guitar. As much as we feel it may be unfair..it’s the reality. Music, especially pop music, is an industry where the persona of its stars often over-shine their talent and skills. It’s a lot harder to market “safe”…just ask the Archie and Jordin teams.

  112. Wow he does sound good doing LLWD live. I was afraid that was going to be a difficult song to sing live, or that he would get out of breath doing the chorus ha!

I find nothing wrong with what Jive is currently doing right now. Major TV promo isn’t going to happen until closer to the album release since they’ll want to push that along with the actual song. He got good ads this week and the biggest radio station in the country is spinning the crap out of it. Now it’s just a matter of waiting to see if the general public latches on to it.

  113. Kris sounds great doing LLWD live. Looking for the full song..

I wonder who is the other guitarist with Kris?

  114. I don’t think that’s really true ‘” I think SuBo and Adam are the two most famous #2’s in the world. SuBo is probably more famous that Adam!

Exactly. If articles are written with AI attached to Adam, it always says runner-up. If anyone knows about Adam, they will know his status. It only seems like Adam was the winner because he has been getting so much industry buzz, and Kris not so much.

  115. For whatever reason, AI/ Kris fans were not there to buy his first single.

I think a lot of them bought the Itunes pass and are just waiting for the album

That’s similar for all singers whose albums can be pre-order before their first single is release, probably except that itune passes can’t be returned.

  116. Mtlfan

People on ontd_ai.com think the other guitarist is Kris’ friend Cale Mills. Cale played with Kris when Kris was doing his gigs in Arkansas. If it is Cale, I wonder if this means Kris has asked him to be in his band when he goes on tour?

  117. Mtlfan- Yes, I did say that in my post. Album sales are different. I do believe a lot of AI fans have bought the Itunes pass. So as far as his single is concerned, it will be non AI fans buying it, as the Kris fans have already bought the pass. And that is another reason you cannot really compare kris to anyone else- no one else had the Itunes pass, did they?

  119. Some songs take a long time to catch on……”Just Dance” was released to radio in the spring of 2008, I believe, although i am not sure which format is was released to first. It may have been the “Dance” format. My point being it took a long time for “Just Dance” to blow up, almost 5 or 6 months.

  120. Michael Sarver is going to be on a tour with some other former idols, Alexis Grace, from this season, David Hernandez from Season 7 and Gina Glocksen from Season 6.

There is information that Michael posted on his Twitter page, about what places the tour will go to and what times the shows on the tour will start.

    http://twitter.com/michaelsarver1

  121. Cale Mills also tried out for AI with Kris, and was one of the guys with Kris in those paparazzi pics from right before Kris went to London.

I know too much about this… I’m worried.

  122. will
    October 15, 2009 at 12:53 pm

But I must say I worry for him when he says that he’d rather not be talked about at all than be gossiped about.

He can’t seem to make up his mind though, since later in the interview he said articles like the one saying he was divorcing Katy are hilarious and don’t bother him at all.

Whether it bothers him or not, he may or may not like it. I actually think this statement plays into that feeling. I’d have to think that nobody would like their every fart analyzed as to what they had for dinner last night. I happen to think it only makes sense. If anybody craves that, well I’d have to feel truly sorry for that person. They’re in it for the totally wrong reason.

  123. I know ex-Idols without record deals and/or those who finished lower on the tv show have toured together in the past. Do these tours usually do well? Do they draw good crowds and make any $$?

  124. Thanks for bringing over the video(s) of Kris’s LLWD performance… nice to see him on stage doing his thing :) . I really like the song, and love his voice.

  125. Q3: They are spending money but nothing seems to be getting traction.

Kirsten: I’d call getting 37 ads this week on radio to be gaining some traction. If you consider that Jive had the 1st and 2nd most added songs this week, they are doing something right.

By traction, I mean sales. Not radio adds. Kris won American Idol, Jive is supporting the single, it will get radio adds.

Kirsten: If all it took was money, record labels wouldn’t have to try so hard to find a hit.

Radio airplay doesn’t mean a hit song. And, in fact, I believe that radio airplay is becoming less important to driving sales everyday. TV is also important and the Internet is growing in importance everyday.

And regarding getting radio airplay, we all know it has to be soft dollars, but dollars and promo are involved — even for Britney Spears — #1 this week in radio adds. (But if “3” didn’t pick up adds, that would have been news since it’s #1 BB).

Kirsten: I still think something went wonky with an earlier photo-shoot (probably Kris being sick and looking like something the cat dragged in) and that’s why we are seeing these cover shots so late.

Who knows why they used that graphic cover for the first few weeks. I think that it could just as easily been a later idea or a scheduling screw-up. The single graphic was released by 9/21 — the day they did the cover photoshoot at Snug Harbor:

SnugHarborCCBG: For all you American Idol fans, 2009 winner Kris Allen was here in Snug Harbor’s Music Hall yesterday for a photo shoot for his new album!!!
6:11 AM Sep 22nd from web

No matter what caused it, I think that they would have sold more units of this single if it had the great new packaging featured in all the initial PR. It was a missed opportunity to brand Kris as an artist. And not to have the face of the American Idol Winner on his first real single is a big miss in my book.

  126. Kris is starting off like any new artist who 30 million people saw win a talent show on America’s biggest TV show. Now does that affect radio. Yes, if he puts out a song that fits the genre of a particular stations. You’d think coming of Idol would be seen as a good thing these days ‘“ Kelly, Jordin, Daughtry, Carrie are all huge on radio.

Fair enough. I really don’t know if AI makes PDs take an extra look at them. It probably does, because at least there’s some concept of who they are as opposed to a faceless CD coming from the usual suspects. So perhaps it helps more than I’m thinking it does – if the song is good that is.

  127. Maybe this has been answered and I missed it by why on Itunes is Kris’s single Live Like we’re Dying still have the old cover?.. I think the new cover would make it much more visually appealing and make someone (outside AI) more inclined to give it a listen

  128. Some songs take a long time to catch on’ ¦’ ¦

Yes, and I believe this will happen with LLWD. It will be a slow build as Kris does more promotion and it gets more airplay. Writing it off at this point is really premature…I think we just have to be patient as this unfolds.

Wasn’t it similar with LO? I’m a David Cook fan but not really sure how things played out last season (didn’t know about mj’s!). I seem to remember that had a really slow start as well.

  129. Now over on ontd_ai they are saying that Kris’ friend Charles has confirmed that not only was that Cale playing with Kris this morning, but that Cale will indeed be in Kris’ band.

IDK – unless he direct messaged the person on ontd_ai. Because he didn’t confirm it on his twitter page…

  130. Studio57 Album sales are different. I do believe a lot of AI fans have bought the Itunes pass. So as far as his single is concerned, it will be non AI fans buying it, as the Kris fans have already bought the pass. And that is another reason you cannot really compare kris to anyone else- no one else had the Itunes pass, did they?

David Cook’s album was on preorder right after he won. It have a couple weeks of strong sales and hit #1 on 5/30/08 — I think that would have the same effect as the Pass (NoBo + Kris Allen Album + Bonuses) and Kris’ album being available for preorder.

Does anyone know how many Kris Allen passes were sold? Kristen are these numbers ever released?

  131. Michael Sarver is going to be on a tour with some other former idols, Alexis Grace, from this season, David Hernandez from Season 7 and Gina Glocksen from Season 6.

Does Michael know David’s gay? Yes I went there…..

  132. Michael said that he will be singing his new single on the tour. Maybe it will be something that he wrote himself. If so it could give people a chance to see how good his songwriting skills are.

  133. dhunken: Maybe this has been answered and I missed it by why on Itunes is Kris’s single Live Like we’re Dying still have the old cover?.. I think the new cover would make it much more visually appealing and make someone (outside AI) more inclined to give it a listen

The do the big iTunes store updates on Tuesday’s, maybe Jive didn’t get it there on time?

  134. LLYd is moving down on iTunes. It’s not maintaining sales or moving up which would make sense given the fact that the air play is increasing daily. It’s too early to panic though. All the new stations playing it should give in a great boost in the next few weeks. If it doesn’t stabilize within 2 weeks and start to move up, there’s a problem with the song connecting with an audience.

  135. Bringing this comment over from ontd_ai, about the indication that Cale Mills is going to be in Kris’ band:

    From poster named hollaay1:

“IF KRIS FORMED A BAND LIKE DAUGHTRY BUT WITH HOT MEN LIKE CALE, HE COULD CALL IT: KRIS AND HIS CATNIP VICTIMS. OR KRIS’S MILKSHAKE DRINKERS. OR ALL THE KRIS STANS ARE DEAD.”

    LOL – Exactly!

  136. The do the big iTunes store updates on Tuesday’s, maybe Jive didn’t get it there on time?

    Thanks Q3!

  137. IDK, maybe Jive is totally playing the ‘New Artist’ angle. 40K is impressive for the amount of spins he’s currently getting. Not great for an Idol, but great for a new artist. I noticed they didn’t mention American Idol.

    Verry interesting.

Just heard on radio on my way to work. David Cook will be ‘In Control’ on Star 101.3 fm San Francisco, details will be announced later.

Is this station affiliated with the LA station that did the whole week of DC “In Control”? I wonder if they’ll just re-air the recording from that stint rather than have him do a new one…

  138. tierbee, thanks for linking to that LOTM, I hadn’t heard the banter before it yet.

I do like Cookiefan09’s version, also, because of the good visual and really good audio (less crowd hoots). It’s only missing a couple of guitar strums at the very beginning, otherwise it’s complete.

    Acoustic Life On the Moon

  139. Is there a site to tell you if your station has played the song yet? The station I listen to here in Albuquerque added it according to info from girlygirl on Tuesday. I listen to the station all day at work and haven’t heard it yet.

  140. Leeann thanks so much!

I recommend those vids highly to Kris fans — he’s adorable, doing the “wiggaloo” school cheer with the girls. And LLWD sounds very good acoustic (two guitars). It’s also great to hear the kids SINGING ALONG to the chorus — which ain’t easy, it’s a tongue-tripper….

Well, FWIW, from what I’ve seen of these ads, they all tend to follow a pattern — including sales, stats about adds, and then some stations and maybe some hot pick quotes if they’ve got them. … So maybe it’s just tradition that they’re following, since most of the ads seem to have all these things. Since people can just look up the number of copies sold anyway, maybe there’s no reason to hide it?

And, after all, even as we complain about Idols having *low* numbers, in fact for every single Idol who’s made any kind of a splash after the show at *all*, most of their numbers are way way better than the numbers of at least three quarters of the other signed artists out there, I’d bet! And that includes even their numbers that look “low” to us. To be #2 in any aspect of the stats puts you overall way way ahead of most other people.

I think it’s too easy for us to just want to compare the Idol winners (and even the first and second runners-up and so on) only to Britney and Miley and so forth on the numbers front.

  142. I thought “Light On” had great first week sales? Didn’t someone say it had over 100K the first week and over 30K for the subsequent two weeks? I know it took a while to go platinum, but its first weeks were much better than LLWD, right?

    It’s inevitable…

  146. Why shouldn’t Kris be compared to previous idol winners and contestants? I don’t get it.

Well, its a bit of a slippery slope. Idols are unique in that they arrive on the scene with fanbases, notoriety, and access to press/promo that no normal new act gets. But none of them get the exact same rollout and they usually are in different genres, and different labels. Even when they are on the same label they have different teams working on their projects. So after a while it gets hard to make direct comparisons.

Look at Kris. His single was handled in a way that no one else’s had… it literally debuted on the radio one day the turned up on Itunes unannounced a few days later. Most other idols who had singles released before their albums had some time for the song to get spins and/or press alerting people that the song was out before it went for sale. So how do we judge Kris? It gets difficult.

  147. YESSS!!!

AbbyLouisee friends of mine have videos of kris singing hit me baby one more time. search tonight :) 6 minutes ago from web

  148. Does anyone know how many Kris Allen passes were sold? Kristen are these numbers ever released?

Am I imagining this or what? Didn’t they release Itunes Pass numbers right after the season when Adam also had his Season Performances album? I could swear I remember seeing both on the I tunes chart.

  149. glamatheart: Yes, and I believe this will happen with LLWD. It will be a slow build as Kris does more promotion and it gets more airplay. Writing it off at this point is really premature’ ¦I think we just have to be patient as this unfolds.

Wasn’t it similar with LO? I’m a David Cook fan but not really sure how things played out last season (didn’t know about mj’s!). I seem to remember that had a really slow start as well.

David Cook’s “Light On” was not a huge hit with the critics. And it’s debut/peak at #17 on the BB Hot 100 was lower than Jordin’s “Tattoo” which debut/peak at #8 in it’s first week. But “Light On” sales didn’t much all like what is happening with LLWD. Here are the sales and BB Hot 100 Chart positions:

    Week #1 109,085 #17 (pop radio starts)
    Week #2 30,966 #66
    Week #3 15,083 offchart
    Week #4 33,598 #60
    Week #5 19,469 #80
    Week #6 18,089 #89 (mainstream Top 40 radio starts)

The single had a big week on the last week of the year (hugh music sales week — iTunes gift cards + Christmas gifts) but it never hit 100K after week #1. Also, “Light On” was BB #56 when Cook’s album was released — so the strong album sales occurred without a big hit single.

    Full history of “Light On”</

  150. Bon Jovi have some good country/rock crossover songs

    I love Bon Jovi

  151. So I was reading over on ontd_ai that Kris got his friend the audition for Jive — and then Kris pushed through the final vote of approval because he really wants Cale in his band.

I figured Cale would have to audition, that you can’t just let anyone into your band willy-nilly without the label’s say so. But it sounds like Kris was determined and got his way here. That must mean Cale is a pretty talented musician himself.

  152. When you have a very extensive fan base and very active fan sites like David A. had and has they were and are very good at getting the word out for a single release, appearances, radio shows, etc. This core base really propelled the sales for ‘Crush’ the first few weeks‘ ¦in truth the sales have been much better than his airplay would have ever indicated. Kris’ fans, as far as I can tell, don’t seem to have this rabid need to promote their guy via twitter or text or fan sites or bombarding online sites to let peeps know Kris’ single is out there.

Gonna have to disagree. The Archie fanbase is visible and awesome or if you prefer “rabid” and all that, but they absolutely can’t take credit for Crush’s phenomenal success in the first week let along the following weeks. We’re talking 166K the first week and almost two million in total overall. If that were the case, the fanbase would have been able to do the same for ALTNOY or the EPs that followed. Crush was simply a digital hit in general and that extended way beyond the fanbase from the first day. Radio simply jumped on it quickly and the public made it a hit.

Kris can have the same kind of success or better if he gets the right kind of song and radio support. For all we know, LLWD will still be a hit and it’s just having a slower start.

  153. Does Michael know David’s gay? Yes I went there’ ¦..

He probably is thinking this will work out great. This time, he will get the “anybody but that gay guy” support.

  154. CindyM, you can find out what is being played on a station through your artist’s Yes.com channel. I have not been on there so don’t know how to find a given artist. I don’t know if it is backward-looking or if you have to watch for future spins. After the fact you can find it through Mediabase around the time of new adds. There is a place to look up stations that have not added the song and see how many times they played it in the last week. I’m spoiled by automatic links to these set up at DCO by LadyMadonna and don’t know how to tell you to access it.

Comparisons to prior Idols are always going to happen, but it is good to consider the economy when doing so. I don’t have the impression the economy is much worse than November of last year, but last November and this year are much worse than all prior years. No one is pulling the Idol album numbers of a few years ago. Singles seem bigger than ever, though. David Cook achieved something quite huge to get the album sales he did.

  155. It doesn’t surprised me that Kris could setup a band with his previous band pals like Cale Mills (who is quite good looking too!). It’s nice to see it starting happening. As he said in the Walmart soundcheck, he’s ready to move on with his own career.
As for the single sales, we’ll see now that he start promoting and performing it live

  156. It’s so weird how everyone is acting towards him [Adam], isn’t it? i mean these people should be used to celebrities and they are seriously star struck. that lady ( sorry- don’t know who she is) kept wanting to touch him.

By the look on his face sometimes I think he also thinks it’s weird. The LA peeps have probably seen many people in LA struggling to make it in show business and it might feel vindicating when a local finally makes it.

  157. OMG, what a self-serving peice of shit that Rickey.org Syesha article is. Yuck! I feel the same way clicking on Rickey’s link that people feel going to Perez or TMZ. Whatever you say Rickey’ ¦..

I was wondering if I was the only person who felt that way. Rickey went way overboard with the Syesha thing last year and it’s the main reason I stopped going to his site. Fortunately, I think Syesha was happily clueless about most of what was going on (I really hope she was). I don’t think she was the one with the “issues”. I wish her the best. Talented girl.

  158. These Seton HS girls rock!

    # @AbbyLouisee do they have videos of the viola?19 minutes ago from Echofon in reply to AbbyLouisee

    # @mluisapl yeah, hopefully they upload them to youtube soon18 minutes ago from web in reply to mluisapl

Also, she said that school lets out at 2:34pm. Is that random or what? When I was in HS, we got out at 3 pm on the dot…

  159. So I was reading over on ontd_ai that Kris got his friend the audition for Jive ‘” and then Kris pushed through the final vote of approval because he really wants Cale in his band.

Great news for Kris. I think the most important thing for him is to put together a band that is right for him.

Why shouldn’t Kris be compared to previous idol winners and contestants? I don’t get it.

No reason. But although comparing Idols is unavoidable, I have been trying to look at what Jive is doing with Kris solely in the context of what is the best way to promote Kris as a recording artist. And I think that they are failing at this. YMMV.

Separate from that, I look at record sales in the context of the total business. And that is what iTunes sales rankings and BB charts give us.

  160. Personally I am dissapointed in Kris’ core fan base. They propelled him to the AI crown and now they have seemed to dissapear. I was really hoping that they would pick it up and support their guy like Cook’s and Archie’s fans did last year. I know the song was released on a Friday, so I don’t count sales thru Sunday. But by Monday the fan community should have had the word out and his loyal supporters should have jumped to the task. Besides it’s $1.29…a cup of black coffee.

By the way Jordin sold 34,000 of Tatoo her first week and 33,000 the following week.

  161. Also, ‘Light On’ was BB #56 when Cook’s album was released ‘” so the strong album sales occurred without a big hit single.

I’d bet anything TOML was also a big help in his early sales. LO may have been his real “first” single but TOML got massive exposure both on TV and radio. IMO he had that and a strong fanbase in his favor. Also he had major pre-orders. Till this day i don’t know how many pre-orders he racked up but from the time it went up on Amazon it never dropped low at all, and went it up went up on iTunes for pre-order it shot to #1 and did well there for a few days. When HDD’s early predictions came in they cited massive pre-orders which were going to lead to big first week sales. LO did better sales wise and didn’t have nearly the kind of audience impressions LLWD currently has due to Z100 not adding it until much later.

  162. Someone above (sorry, no time to look up who) mentioned that David Cook’s promo overshadowed Archie’s last year, implying that this was responsible for his sales success. This is not how I remember it at all. I remember huge angst at the time for Cook fans because it seemed like Archie was being given perks normally reserved for the winner – first album single, first CD to come out, Macy’s parade, I believe more iTunes promo, I forget what else. It was implied that David Cook’s management didn’t believe in him and that he was DOOMED! SNL was the one significant bit of promo where David Cook got more than Archie. I bring this up only as it relates to giving a clearer picture of what promo will and won’t do. It is etched in my memory due to the angst at the time over this.

  163. A Peabody man suffered a fatal heart attack at the Kelly Clarkson concert at Boston University on Tuesday night

It’s not everyday I see my home town on mjs, too bad it is for such an unfortunate situation

  164. I figured Cale would have to audition, that you can’t just let anyone into your band willy-nilly without the label’s say so. But it sounds like Kris was determined and got his way here. That must mean Cale is a pretty talented musician himself.

Aw, that’s great for Kris! I’m always happy when they get to have people they know and trust from before Idol, like with Neal and Andy (and now Monty) for David Cook’s band.

Thanks for bringing over the video(s) of Kris’s LLWD performance’ ¦ nice to see him on stage doing his thing :) . I really like the song, and love his voice.

    Ditto!

  166. When you have a very extensive fan base and very active fan sites like David A. had and has they were and are very good at getting the word out for a single release, appearances, radio shows, etc. This core base really propelled the sales for ‘Crush’ the first few weeks’ ¦in truth the sales have been much better than his airplay would have ever indicated. Kris’ fans, as far as I can tell, don’t seem to have this rabid need to promote their guy via twitter or text or fan sites or bombarding online sites to let peeps know Kris’ single is out there.

I don’t agree about the bolded part, Crush was an instant hit with airplay as well as sales.
After two weeks of radio play, it had a spin count of over 1400, while LO had 550+, Tattoo 530 and LLWD 430. LLWD spin count is now after three weeks just under 500.

  167. A Peabody man suffered a fatal heart attack at the Kelly Clarkson concert at Boston University on Tuesday night

It’s not everyday I see my home town on mjs, too bad it is for such an unfortunate situation

I know – very sad. And what sucks is the traffic around the Agganis Arena is crazy so I can imagine the trouble the ambulance had getting to the guy

  168. AbbyLouisee friends of mine have videos of kris singing hit me baby one more time. search tonight

Can’t wait to see that, that should be some good times right there.

And cool about Kris getting Cale as part of his band. I agree, it’s good to be working with people whose skills and personality you know and can trust.

  169. Oh no, not the season 7 promo wars again! LOL.

Kris has online fans but not a hhuuuggeee amount of them, and right now that’s mostly who is gonna know about his single. And the people in the towns spinning it of course. So we’ll see what happens when his major promo starts. Let him get on the national TV shows, print media, etc. And let the song pick up more spins. What kind of audience is it reaching right now? I vaguely remember LO not doing much of anything until it hit around 12 mil (?) in audience weekly. Is that about right peeps? Anyway, Kris is gonna take a little more time to judge, IMO.

Someone above (sorry, no time to look up who) mentioned that David Cook’s promo overshadowed Archie’s last year, implying that this was responsible for his sales success. This is not how I remember it at all. I remember huge angst at the time for Cook fans because it seemed like Archie was being given perks normally reserved for the winner ‘“ first album single, first CD to come out, Macy’s parade, I believe more iTunes promo, I forget what else.

I actually think it went back and forth that they weren’t promoting him enough or were spending too much to promote him based on each piece of promotion that came out. In the end, it’s all spin. We have absolutely no power in whether a song is loved by radio or not. A huge or dismal opening week means nothing in the grand scheme of things. A song will be spun or not regardless of what overinvested fans (of which I have to say I’m one) do.

  171. Cindy M, you can go to yes.com and do a search (upper left) for the radio station’s call letters that your are looking for. Click on your station in the left panel. Then, at the top of the main screen there are 3 tabs: chat (you can live chat here with other people…I’d go to Kris’s channel for example instead of the one for the radio station), top songs, and song log.

In the song log you can pull up playlists, by the hour, and scroll through the artists listed. If Kris has been played, he will appear on those hourly lists. Hope this helps anyone wishing to check plays of their favorite artists on radio.

  172. Crush was simply a digital hit in general and that extended way beyond the fanbase from the first day. Radio simply jumped on it quickly and the public made it a hit.

Not to beat a dead horse and I think it is stupendous that Archie got such good sales from Crush but the initial week was very much fan driven on all the sites. Fans were buying the single multiple times and then gifting them. The buzz in his hometown was electric and stations there played it repeatedly (thats the kind of stuff I mean, too). Besides, I have, to this day, never heard Crush on the radio here in Phoenix. Satalite and Disney but no local stations. Yes, there were casual listeners who bought it..but not the first week, that came later.

  173. Another case in point- Clay Aiken. His first week sales for his album were phenominal because of his fan base, but his first single I think only made it to #37 on billboard.

I do not think that is correct. And Clay’s release dates aren’t similar to Kris’ plus pre-digital world.

    Based on wiki:

Clay’s first single was double A-side:
“Bridge over Troubled Water” (Paul Simon)
“This Is the Night” Chris Braide/Aldo Nova/Gary Burr

    Released: June 3, 2003
Peak Chart Position: #1 U.S. Debut
RIAA Certification: Platinum (July 15, 2003)
    U.S. sales: 1.3 million
CRIA Certification: 6x Platinum (July 2003)

His second single was also Double A-Side:
    The Way / Solitaire
    Released: March 17, 2004
    Peak Chart Positions: #4 US
    U.S. sales: 322,000
    CRIA Certification: Platinum (November 2004)

  174. I’ll stop beating the dead horse promo but Jive and RCA always handle artists differently. RCA does most of the promo closer to the release of the album. then they really go all out. Jive (more frugal) relies on radio (especially Z100) to do most of the work.

Idol winner/runner up usually gets GMA, Regis, Ellen, Kimmel and possibly Leno.
Other usual Idol winner gigs (Rockefeller Tree Lighting, high profile New Year’s Eve event, NA at some big sporting event).

  175. Invisible was Clay’s 1st real single and that’s what they’re referring to when they say it went to #38 on the BB 100. Invisible also wasn’t available as a CD single and iTunes wasn’t around then so the BB100 position was based on airplay. Probably why his album did so well. TITN/BOTW was a HUGE seller for a CD single. Neither got major airplay and its Hot 100 position was mostly sales.

  176. Q3: That first single you listed for Clay was the equivalent of his coronation song. Back then the winner and runner up released a single right after the show. I don’t think it got radio play… maybe on AC.

Clay’s second song didn’t come out until way after the album released, I think. His album dropped in the fall. I’m pretty sure most of Clay’s sales came over the christmas season… he was double platinum before the year was out. It was definitely his fanbase at work.

  177. David Cook’s album was on preorder right after he won. It have a couple weeks of strong sales and hit #1 on 5/30/08 ‘” I think that would have the same effect as the Pass (NoBo + Kris Allen Album + Bonuses) and Kris’ album being available for preorder.

A pre-order and a Season Pass are a little different and would tend to have the opposite effect on single sales. Cook’s pre-order on iTunes came bundled with a “free” copy of Light On which you could download immediately and for which they charged you 99 cents. If you canceled the pre-order, you got to keep the single and they kept your 99 cents. If you didn’t cancel the order, they delivered the entire CD and charged you the album price minus the 99 cents.

The week you made the pre-order, the single was counted as a download by SS. The day you got your CD, the single was considered returned by SS and decremented from the total number of downloads sold. So, pre-orders tend to inflate the number of singles sold in advance of the album release and decrease the number of singles sold the week of release.

Meanwhile, you pay for the entire Season’s Pass when you buy it and get the material when it’s available. It would tend to deflate sales prior to the album being released because people buy the pass and get the single. It would have no effect on singles sales after the album is released. In the end, it all comes out in the wash between the two styles.

This is the first year for an Idol Season’s Pass. I don’t recall seeing any numbers for it (we did get numbers for the compilation CD).

LLYd is moving down on iTunes. It’s not maintaining sales or moving up which would make sense given the fact that the air play is increasing daily.

It’s still punching above its weight, though. It will continue to fall until it reaches equilibrium between the number of spins and the number of units moved. Usually, they are related. He’s in the 400s in airplay and in the 100s on iTunes. He’s had no major television promo, yet, so there is nothing else to drive sales.

If we hit November and it’s still falling and slogging it in the nether regions of airplay, I’ll say toss the single overboard and try something new. John Mayer is releasing a new single in November (he released his first one a few days before Kris and his CD drops the same day).

So Max Martin was in a glam rock band called ‘It’s Alive’ ? Man I would love to find a video of that. I guess they only sold 30,000 records. Funny how things can turn around for a guy.

    ETA: Found one! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64znOMEwvWk

All right, i liked that. Gonna look for a downloadable version. Thansk studio!

  179. David Cook’s ‘Light On’ was not a huge hit with the critics. And it’s debut/peak at #17 on the BB Hot 100 was lower than Jordin’s ‘Tattoo’ which debut/peak at #8 in it’s first week. But ‘Light On’ sales didn’t much all like what is happening with LLWD.

I had no idea Jordin debuted at #8 the first week. How did “Tattoo” get there with only 34,000 singles sold the first week. Looks like both Davids did pretty well, also.

Kris will get compared to past idol winners for the same reason Adam was compared to Blake in the last headlines thread. Kirsten strongly believes these types of comparisons have merit. She seems to have a great deal of information and is a moderator here-so I figure these types of comparisons are valid and make sense.

  180. bummer that the walmart soundcheck is titled “American Idol” and includes adam, allison and kris together…doesn’t let any of them move beyond AI, and keeps them joined at the hip…i guess all publicity is good publicity, but agree with the view that it is time for them to move beyond AI and away from each other

  181. Kris has online fans but not a hhuuuggeee amount of them, and right now that’s mostly who is gonna know about his single.

I have to say that I kind of wonder what we mean when we say “online fans.” … Do people mean by that just those who frequent fan forums, message boards, and blogs, or does that include everybody who uses their Internet connection?

Frankly, I would include “everybody who uses their Internet connection” as an online fan, if by that we mean “people who could learn online that Kris’s single is out.”

I happen to frequent some forums and blogs and such, and, yeah, they give me probably more news than I need quite often about some subjects of particular interest to me, like AI.

However, I also find out plenty of news about new music of the non-AI variety and so on just by reading the general news and scanning Amazon and the like. Heck, if you’re interested in music at all and you browse the Entertainment Weekly site, for example, just to get a sense of who’s coming out with a new album you might like to buy, you would know about Kris’s new single. You wouldn’t have to go to any AI blog or Kris forum to get that information.

Even people who are sort of casually online, and who watched and enjoyed Kris on the show and thus knew that he’d most likely have some music coming out this fall, would easily have found out about LLWD by now, I would think.

So if Kris doesn’t have “online fans” in this sense, then who the heck are his fans? The elderly? The Amish?

I honestly don’t see how we get around saying that a lot of Kris’s fans, for whatever reason, have decided not to buy LLWD right now. Maybe it’s because they know it’ll be on the album, or because they downloaded it free, or whatever. But given the level of Internet penetration at this point, I would think that a very large majority of people who actually like Kris enough to qualify as fans *do* know about the single and are, for whatever reason, not buying it. … Maybe they don’t have Itunes? ….

  182. I do like Cookiefan09’s version, also, because of the good visual and really good audio (less crowd hoots). It’s only missing a couple of guitar strums at the very beginning, otherwise it’s complete.

    Acoustic Life On the Moon

Hey, that’s me. Thanks for the compliment. I tried to keep quiet too, since I was doing the cellcast.

  183. Clay’s second song didn’t come out until way after the album released, I think. His album dropped in the fall

Not quite. Measure of a Man came out in October and Invisible came out right around then. The video was out by the time he did album promo and he sang it on all the shows. He even performed it on the AI tour so the fanbase was definitely familiar with it. The Way/Solitaire single didnt come out until March.

I scare myself with my former Claymate knowledge LOL

  184. Springboard,
Kris has 1377 as at today. And Kris is gaining the spins in two formats, not only one.

  185. jpfan: However most of the better gigs that Cook got last season (AMA, Oprah, SNL???) are going to the runner up this year. Every Idol winner/runner up gets GMA, Regis, Ellen, Kimmel and possibly Leno. Other usual Idol winner gigs (Rockefeller Tree Lighting, high profile New Year’s Eve event, NA at some big sporting event)/

Adam hasn’t been on Ellen, Kimmel or Leno/Conan. All he did was two- post win duel appearances with Kris — Today and CBS Early Show, and a phone call with Ellen. Plus, he appeared wth Kris and Cook at the GMA Summer concert.

All of the other Adam promo events were outside of the Idol world — EW cover, Rolling Stone, TfM/2012 promos, Oprah, AMA’s and GMA Fall Concert.

Similarly, Cook got a lot of opportunities because of who he was as a performer, not just because he won Idol. SNL did not put on Cook because 19M set it up — it just doesn’t work that way.

  186. Good point about iTunes.

I think SNL had Cook on because he had alot of buzz coming off his Idol win. If they loved him as a performer, they should have him on again. The AMAs and 19 have a very cozy relationship. But I’m not fighting the S7/s8 promo wars again, I promise.

Wow! This is a great group! I would totally go to this. I love Alexis, David, and Gina!

  188. So if Kris doesn’t have ‘online fans’ in this sense, then who the heck are his fans? The elderly? The Amish?

LOL. Well alrighty then. I just meant the hardcore fan types, who do the fanboards and here and stay up on that kind of thing.

I don’t think everyone with an internet connection goes to entertainment sites everyday and browses the music section. Yes people can come across it the info normally, but its not like the best way to get music release to the masses.

There have been idols who did not have fanbases that appeared in large number at sites like these, but sold a whole lot of albums/songs the first time they appeared in public to promote it. Kris may be like that (or not), all I’m saying is we’ll have to see.

Not quite. Measure of a Man came out in October and Invisible came out right around then. The video was out by the time he did album promo and he sang it on all the shows. He even performed it on the AI tour so the fanbase was definitely familiar with it. The Way/Solitaire single didnt come out until March.

HA! I thought it came out later because I didn’t remember hearing it until like January. But I KNOW I heard that damn BOTW thing that summer. Wasn’t there some kind of mild controversy about that song?

  189. jpfan
    October 15, 2009 at 2:24 pm

I don’t think an appearance by an Idol once the tour is done is as cut and dried as you have indicated. I don’t think that these events are negotiating with AI, I am sure they are working with the record companies and an Idol’s booking agent.

Not all of the winners or runner-ups do the same thing. In fact the NAs seem to be spread amongst all of the idols including J Hudd who wasn’t in the top 3. TV talk shows, once the tour is done, are also about the singer and not the show same with personal appearance gigs, like being presenters at awards shows. The Idols get these due to name rocognition and fan interest, not because they won or lost a reality show.

Promo is a two-way street. The Idol needs the gig and the gig is searching for the person whose fans tag along so that they can sell advertising. To think a winner is not getting fair treatment because he isn’t getting what some previous idols got is not realistic. Every Idol needs to sell themselves…if the gig wants somebody else, that is how the cookie crumbles.

ETA…I must be a slow typist since Q3 already addressed this. I just know that many fans are under the same impression as jpfan and many of us want to make sure that there is a good understanding of what is a Winner’s package. Saves a lot of angst and “throwing under the bus” feelings.

  190. All right, i liked that. Gonna look for a downloadable version. Thansk studio!

Beehiway- there is actually a couple of videos on youtube of that band. It’s weird that he was labeled Glam Rock. Looked to me like he was having an identity crisis because they dressed like grunge but their songs were more pop oriented.

  191. So in summary Kris’s early sales suck royally for an idol winner,(And I mean SUCK!) but with spins ,adds etc he may pick up as time goes long. Thanks guys!

The music bizness is a hard one these days

  192. Thanks Kirsten for your explanation on pre-order album and itunes pass. It’s a factor on his single sales i think

  193. Anyway, Kris is gonna take a little more time to judge, IMO.

But it’s been like 2 whole days since his radio adds! That should totally be enough time to determine how well it will ultimately do. And yeah I agree with giving it a few weeks (at least) to see if the increased radio play has a positive effect on sales. One hopes it does as that would seem to make sense as more people exposed to a song getting good reviews, will lead to more to more sales. But we’ll see.

And those YouTubes are cute, Kris rocking out as he usually does on guitar, and the clapping to parts of it, and the girls singing to parts of the chorus. But I have to say, damn! that song is wordy and Kris did have to kind of keep up with it.

That was just the advertisement for the upcoming Walmart soundcheck though. According to what I’ve read, they will have individual soundchecks featuring music from their albums. I can’t wait!

  195. Kirsten strongly believes these types of comparisons have merit.

I believe that they are the most reasonable comparibles. You just can’t compare Idols to new artists off the street in my opinion. They’ve simply had too much exposure. Each year, we get more data on Idols, but each year, there is some new wrinkles too.

She seems to have a great deal of information and is a moderator here-so I figure these types of comparisons are valid and make sense.

I can only moderate my own threads (Headlines isn’t one of them) and in 2.5 years, I’ve only ever done that once (i.e MJ is the main modder because this is her house). But, MJ has said in the past that she is fine with comparisons between Idols and seasons so long as it is relevant. Just dragging in random Idols to blast them is not valid.

And, just because she’s flying, I’ll also mention that she typically frowns on fanwars, especially those that involve Idols from seasons of yore. I suspect she’d be happier spending her time losing money on the slots than having to spend her entire night deleting posts.

  196. There have been idols who did not have fanbases that appeared in large number at sites like these, but sold a whole lot of albums/songs the first time they appeared in public to promote it. Kris may be like that (or not), all I’m saying is we’ll have to see.

Oh, that’s interesting. Who are you referring to? And, yeah, it could be this way. And, definitely, we’ll have to wait and see!

  197. Adam hasn’t been on Ellen, Kimmel or Leno/Conan. All he did was two- post win duel appearances with Kris ‘” Today and CBS Early Show, and a phone call with Ellen.

Adam did do Regis & Kelly too!

  198. This is Kris’ friend who is supposedly joining him on tour. I bet if Kris could get hot guys like this in his band for the tour, with good songs on his album, the tour will be a good one.

    http://photos.Shotbymint.com/Cale-Mills/Cosmo-Shoot/8833027rZ6AC#585341407LtzoF

And this is what he said about Kris according to ontd_ai, far back in 2006.

“I’m thankful to Kris Allen – I will follow him anywhere. His humility is amazing and so I trust what he says and believe he is capable of anything. I’m thankful for his friendship and late nights at The Edge”.
They used to play at The Edge (a bar) back then.

  199. Trina: Not quite.

“Measure of a Man” – CD album release date 10/14/03

“Invisible” – I can find a promotion CD single that was released and records of a MP3 single released 10/14/03. (digital in 2003 isn’t comparable to now)

Was “Invisible” released as a retail CD single in the US in 2003? Because I can’t find it listed as a Retail CD — even though it charted — looks like it charted on radio airplay (before digital sales were included on Billboard.)

  200. The week you made the pre-order, the single was counted as a download by SS. The day you got your CD, the single was considered returned by SS and decremented from the total number of downloads sold. So, pre-orders tend to inflate the number of singles sold in advance of the album release and decrease the number of singles sold the week of release.

That’s very interesting, I always wondered how that worked. So in Cook’s case, his first week of sales for Light On of 109,035 included the I-tunes pre-sales for the album.

The sales week ending 11/23/09 (week when album was released) would help us calculate an approximate I-tunes pre-order figure. His Light on Sales were 11,286. Granted, it could also be downloaded from Amazon and Walmart, etc, but I think I-tunes has most of the digital market. I notice that the week before and after this week sales were 21,127 and 20,300 respectively. It appears that the I-tunes presale figure was somewhere in the 9,000 – 10,000 range. (21,127 – 11,286 = 9873) If my logic is faulty, feel free to correct it.

  201. The music bizness is a hard one

Which is why all the post-Idols are lucky, compared to most other talented young musicians, no matter how bad their results may sometimes look to us! That’s why you don’t hear many of them ever complaining, I think!

  202. There have been idols who did not have fanbases that appeared in large number at sites like these, but sold a whole lot of albums/songs the first time they appeared in public to promote it.

Carrie is a classic example of this. Not to say that Kris is the next Carrie, just to say that it can happen.

Crush was getting lots of airplay from Z100, the biggest station in the country, immediately after they premiered it. It topped the afternoon and 9 @ 9 countdowns daily for awhile. New York is a huge market by itself but a lot of other markets also picked it up and played it way before the adds date, which was September. Even with radio giving it a decent reception, Crush sold beyond its airplay consistently. Still managed to sell over 100K when it made all the end-year countdowns in December, months after it became available for purchase. Again, all of Archie’s songs and EPs and his album have had buzz.and devoted fan support but none have matched the runaway success of Crush, which means to me that it was a hit that went beyond the fanbase even in the first week.

I can only HOPE he has material that resonates with the public like Crush did on his second Pop album. Fingers crossed.

Lots of luck to Kris and Adam as well.

  204. IndyMuse: Someone above (sorry, no time to look up who) mentioned that David Cook’s promo overshadowed Archie’s last year, implying that this was responsible for his sales success. This is not how I remember it at all.

I remember it the way you do. Folks thought that the label had no confidence in David Cook. Archie is all over the place. Where is David? etc etc etc. If anyone on this thread thinks that David Cook got more promo or buzz than Archie they are sadly mistaken. The wisdom was on this board and others that Archie would outsell David Cook handsdown.

ETA: How does this relate to this years Idols? It does provide a lesson in expectations and buzz. Because noone really knows what will happen until all is said and done.

  205. That’s very interesting, I always wondered how that worked. So in Cook’s case, his first week of sales for Light On of 109,035 included the I-tunes pre-sales for the album.

I seem to recall that the iTunes pre-order came out later than “Light On” so the effect was seen in one of the later weeks. Wasn’t there one week where there was a problem on iTunes with “Light On” and the next week the problem was fixed and the pre-order was offered so we couldn’t figure out what the effect of either of them were? (too many variables).

I notice that the week before and after this week sales were 21,127 and 20,300 respectively. It appears that the I-tunes presale figure was somewhere in the 9,000 ‘“ 10,000 range. (21,127 ‘“ 11,286 = 9873) If my logic is faulty, feel free to correct it.

I can’t prove it, but I suspect the pre-orders might have been even higher than that. That week, Cook sang the song on many shows and that would tend to increase sales of both the singles and the album. So, I think that before removing the returned singles the sales of LO would have been higher that week than in the previous two weeks.

See…I never knew this until I started reading at mjs. Are a large percentage of Kris’s spins coming from these radio stations in Cinci and Chicago? Where is that chart that breaks down what stations are spinning LLWD? Kirsten?

  207. So how do we judge Kris? It gets difficult.

The bottom line is sales. That’s how any recording artist will ultimately be judged in terms of success, and whether or not they’ll continue to have a recording contract.

There are subjective measures, like how great their voice is, or how creative they are, and so on, but as we can see here daily, those are very subject to opinion, and we’ll never all agree on those measures.

The cold hard fact is that the bottom line is sales/money generated.

Cook’s pre-order on iTunes came bundled with a ‘free’ copy of Light On which you could download immediately and for which they charged you 99 cents. If you canceled the pre-order, you got to keep the single and they kept your 99 cents. If you didn’t cancel the order, they delivered the entire CD and charged you the album price minus the 99 cents.

Not sure what this is related to, but just some factual clarifications here, cuz Kirsten, by responding to the OP about summer preorders with iTunes preorders, it’s a bit misleading. The OP said DC’s preorder was up right after he won and hit #1 in May, but that was in reference to the Amazon preorder, NOT the iTunes preorder, which was posted something like 2 weeks before the drop date in November.

Every Idol winner/runner up gets GMA, Regis, Ellen, Kimmel and possibly Leno. Other usual Idol winner gigs (Rockefeller Tree Lighting, high profile New Year’s Eve event, NA at some big sporting event)

Adam hasn’t been on Ellen, Kimmel or Leno/Conan. All he did was two- post win duel appearances with Kris ‘” Today and CBS Early Show, and a phone call with Ellen. Plus, he appeared wth Kris and Cook at the GMA Summer concert.

I think jpfan was talking about album promo. Adam hasn’t been on Ellen, Kimmel or Leno/Conan YET because his album promo hasn’t begun. Trust, he will be hitting them all come November.

  209. Carrie is a classic example of this. Not to say that Kris is the next Carrie, just to say that it can happen.

Carrie was exactly who I was thinking of. You can also probably argue for Fantasia.. who was HATED online but sold very well off appearances on things like NAACP awards and the like (and of course, all those urban radio hits). And then there’s always Jordin, who sold the best out of her season from the beginning even though she had virtually no online fanbase. ITA the jury is still out on Kris.

  210. We are cross-comparing AI winner/runner up gigs and RCA/Jiva strategies. I’m only after AI so closely this season and base on what I learned here and other forums

    AI winner:
    – Media circus
    – guest in Ellen, Kimmel, Leno/Conan live
    – GMA summer concert, Wal-Mart shareholder, Ford performances
    – More songs in AI tour

    AI runner up:
    – co-appearance with the winner in some of the media circus shows
    – co-appearance in Ford private concert

Can go to either the winner or runner up depending on whose characteristics fits better:
    – Disney
    – Macy’s parade

    Jiva:
    – Early promotion of single
    – depending on radio spin to promote the single
    – concert gigs
    – Talk show guest/performance near album drop date
    – GMA Fall Concert

    RCA
    – Late promotion of single, close to album drop date
    – Talk show guest/performance near album drop date
    – GMA Fall Concert

    Outside of 19 control
    – RS, EW cover
    – Oprah, AMA’s, SNL
    – movie songtrack
    – Olympic theme song

    ETA, update

  211. I seem to recall that the iTunes pre-order came out later than ‘Light On’ so the effect was seen in one of the later weeks.

Wasn’t there one week where there was a problem on iTunes with ‘Light On’ and the next week the problem was fixed and the pre-order was offered so we couldn’t figure out what the effect of either of them were?

You may be right on that, I wasn’t following that closely at that time. It’s makes for interesting discussion though, doesn’t it?

  212. Carrie is a classic example of this. Not to say that Kris is the next Carrie, just to say that it can happen.

Yeah, Carrie hasn’t had a lot of fans at Idol forums. But nevertheless, her first album sold very fast, as I recall — so it wasn’t as if she was a slow builder in any way. That album was something like the fastest country album out of the gate *ever,* wasn’t it?

I guess that’s why I’m reluctant to label as the only “online fans” just the fans in forums and on blogs. I guess I’ve learned that that’s how people here are defining it — but frankly I’ve always thought that “people who hang around Internet forums” isn’t a definition of “fanbase” for anybody.

With Kris, it seems to me that the question has been: Do people not *know* about LLWD, or are fans who know not buying? And I still don’t think you have to hang around online blogs or fangroups to know he has a single out now!

To me, the fans that you actually need to know about in order to understand what’s happening are not the ones that discuss the Idol all day but all the fans who pay enough attention to the media to be aware that music is coming out — and then make the decision to buy quickly, or not. (just like I would call people online consumers of political news the people who scan that news on the NY Times site and Huff Post, not just those who make comments on some political blog or other). I think we think in terms of vocal online fan groups just because we’re among those people. I don’t know that there’s any evidence at all that the online fan groups are the main basis for good sales or even for quick sales. Actually, there’s a lot of evidence to the contrary, seems to me.

With Some Hearts, for example, whether people learned about it when it was first released by reading online or by some other means (and we’re *all* reading a lot more online these days than we are in newspapers and magazines and such), they did learn about it quickly and it shot to the top of the charts. So — no real comparison to Kris that I can see….unless he has a lot of fans who have simply *no* way to learn that he has a single out. (and that brings me back to the Amish, I’m afraid!)

  213. In the end, both Davids established themselves. Maybe not OMG the incredible superstars everyone was hoping for but successful enough to have good careers and second albums. S8 folks will be lucky to do as well.

  214. I am not sure when the Itunes preorder came out but I remember you could not order Light On when they were setting up the preorder so the song really fell that week, and then the next week the folks could preorder the album and get LO as a single but it was after LO was offered. Now when the album comes out and folks chose to “complete the album” the sales for the single drop because the song then becomes a part of the album and not a single. So when the album drops the single sales will go down.

  215. Are a large percentage of Kris’s spins coming from these radio stations in Cinci and Chicago? Where is that chart that breaks down what stations are spinning LLWD? Kirsten?

You can find them on AllAccess. You need one of their free accounts. I can’t see Pop, but Z100 is spinning the crap out of it (57 spins in the last week).

    Leader board:
    WKRQ: Cincinnati: 38
    WRMF: West Palm: 31
    WXLO: Worcester: 27
    WWMP: Burlington: 26
    WINK: Fort Meyers: 25
    WMTX: Chicago: 19
    WGER: Saginaw: 17
    KURB: Little Rock: 16
    KEZR: San Jose: 13

  216. wordnerdarchie, Kirsten remembers it exactly as I do. The first week of LO sales were pure single sales. A week or 2 after, the weird glitch was fixed and the preorder went up. So there was a lot of speculation if the LO sales that week were due just to the preorder or the fixed glitch, etc.

    Outside of 19 control
    ‘“ GMA Fall Concert

I’m pretty sure GMA Fall concerts are much like talk show promo appearances. Also, Idol has always had a lot of folks on GMA, so I think 19 has a great relationship with ABC.

  217. There have been idols who did not have fanbases that appeared in large number at sites like these, but sold a whole lot of albums/songs the first time they appeared in public to promote it.

Carrie is a classic example of this. Not to say that Kris is the next Carrie, just to say that it can happen.

Unless Kris is going to go country and release an album in the country market-you can’t compare these two. I’ve been a fan of country music and I have lived in the capital of CM. You cannot compare the cm market or fans to the pop market. Country music is a different world.

  218. The bottom line is sales.

Thanks, that’s basically all I’m looking for. If I had to go through every season and its peculiarities to come down to how comparitively as an Idol winner Kris is doing, I would effing off myself!

So sales it is …and it will be judged better after the album comes out and the almighty itunes passes count(there better be a million of them at this rate!)

  219. Don’t know how much it means but I got in my car at 1:00 and lo and behold, LLWD was playing on WPLJ. I think it’s classified as the Hot AC station in NY. I’m not sure if it was a listener request or if they played it on their own (12 -1 is all requests lunch hour). Either way, they played it. (Yay so now I don’t have to listen to Z100 in order to hear it). Hopefully, it’s a good sign.

  220. Carrie is a classic example of this. Not to say that Kris is the next Carrie, just to say that it can happen.

Sure, if his album turns out to be country.

  221. but Z100 is spinning the crap out of it (57 spins in the last week).

OK I don’t get it then. If they are spinning the crap out of it and it is hitting top 10 on their daily list, why is it not affecting sales?

  222. I seem to recall that the iTunes pre-order came out later than ‘Light On’ so the effect was seen in one of the later weeks.

Yes, the itunes pre-order came on Oct 21st, three weeks after LO was released. As part of the pre-order, LO was available immediately, and billed immediately whilst the rest of the album was billed on album release date.
It means that the itunes pre-orders bumped LO sales, that went from 15K 3rd week to 33K 4th week. (and deducted at album release time)
The same happened with DA’s album/single.

  223. but Z100 is spinning the crap out of it (57 spins in the last week).

If that’s true, then the decline in the Itunes charts is a bad sign.

  224. Anyway, Kris is gonna take a little more time to judge, IMO.

Truthiness: But it’s been like 2 whole days since his radio adds! That should totally be enough time to determine how well it will ultimately do.

Funniest damn thing I’ve read all week. Haha

BTW, BeckyMD, under “outside of 19 control,” you probably should add SNL. Because no one tells Lorne Michaels who gets to be on his show. Not even Simon Fuller.

Also, I think history has proven that some type of AMA presence is within 19’s/RCA’s control

  225. To me, the fans that you’re interested in are not the ones that discuss the Idol all day but all the fans who pay enough attention to the media to be aware that music is coming out ‘” and then make the decision to buy quickly, or not.

Ok, I see where you are coming from now. The problem with that for me is that Kris single has not really hit the national media like that yet. Carrie was everywhere all at once, so anyone who loved her knew about her stuff right away. But other than mentions on all the major idol blogs, and radio appearances in some of the cities spinning it, Kris’ single has not had a lot of promo. That’s what I mean. When he’s on the Today Show and Regis performing it, then you can expect the anxious fans who are not frequenting blogs to kick in.

I love (LOVE) Jill Scott, but I don’t go to her fansites or frequent her blogs. I hear news about her if she pops up in a magazine or my TV, etc. I’m online all the time, but often I don’t hear about a new project of hers until right around the time its gonna drop, because that’s when the promo starts. So I’m thinking Kris may be in a similar boat. Maybe.

  226. Meanwhile, you pay for the entire Season’s Pass when you buy it and get the material when it’s available. It would tend to deflate sales prior to the album being released because people buy the pass and get the single. It would have no effect on singles sales after the album is released. In the end, it all comes out in the wash between the two styles.

iTunes Passes aren’t reported to SoundScan when they are purchases. That’s why the Kris Allen Pass was never made the Billboard Digital Album charts — it’s treated like a preorder bundle.

It’s still not considered a sale until delivery in made. The SoundScan rules are very clear about sales transactions. The accounting for the Pass is exactly the same as for a gift card except it can only be used to get specific items. iTunes takes your money, and has a liability on their books to offset the collection, they do not report it as revenue until the deliver the product, and they declamate the balance on the Pass as deliveries are made.

So the NoBo pass sales have been sent to SoundScan, the album numbers will be reported when the album is released. What they did with LLWD is unknown — was it a bonus track, or was it done as a sale that they will later reverse when they deliver the album. My guess is the latter.

  227. Q3- that was the figure I got for “Invisible” – #37 on the BB chart. It says on wiki that was his first single.

  228. “Invisible” wasn’t released as a retail single just a radio single. I think the video actually got more exposure because at the time TRL was HUGE and Claymates made sure it was a constant figure on there. IIRC it was even retired which not many videos did.

I’m pretty sure GMA Fall concerts are much like talk show promo appearances

The GMA Fall concert series is nothing like the summer ones. They’re studio performances and if you do manage to get in its a very tiny audience and youre cramped in the studio. The artist does 2, sometimes 3 songs. One song won’t make it on the air.

Ah well I know it’s amusing thinking back once everything is out there but I’ll admit I was one who was absolutely certain Archie would outsell DC in album sales due to LO vs. Crush sales.

  229. Just to put the “internet” in pespective I don’t know a single person who I have more than a nodding acquaintance with that doesn’t own or have access to a computer. Even the old ladies have them and know how to get online and check email…their kids demand that.

Now to be honest, I live pretty middle class so my demographic is not that of everyone…but even in poorer areas the library computers are restricted to time usage because everyone knows how to use them and the demand is very high.

So, yes, most people get a lot of information, however casual, from their computers. And people are a lot more savvy then we think they are. If someone watched Idol and is interested they know how to get news about their fav…they don’t have to be invested like a fanatic like me.

So inside idoldom people should know Kris has a single out…and that should be about 20 million people (hah, hah) give or take a few. So his fans, if they like the song, should be buying. The general populace who don’t know Kris from Adam (not our Adam but the original Adam…old saying) will buy after the song is played or promoted. So, yup, things are a bit weird right now and hopefully the ship will right itself, soon.

  230. That was just the advertisement for the upcoming Walmart soundcheck though. According to what I’ve read, they will have individual soundchecks featuring music from their albums. I can’t wait!

I suspect that just the interview is joint, which I don’t mind because they play off each other so well. This is probably the last hurrah for Kradison.

Again, all of Archie’s songs and EPs and his album have had buzz.and devoted fan support but none have matched the runaway success of Crush, which means to me that it was a hit that went beyond the fanbase even in the first week.

ITA, serenade. I was one of those casual (very casual) viewers of S7 and the first time I heard Crush on the radio I knew it would be a huge hit. It didn’t matter to me who was singing the song (I was surprised to find it was Archie, in fact), I just knew from the first listen the song was golden.

  231. OK I don’t get it then. If they are spinning the crap out of it and it is hitting top 10 on their daily list, why is it not affecting sales?

It is. If it wasn’t, the song might be parked in the lower 1000s. Z100 is a leader in the format, but the United States is bigger than New York. You need spins across the country. The song has AIs of about 4 million. On Pop alone, “Down” has an AI of over 80 million. Add in another 75.9 million on Rhythmic (and that’s not even looking at Urban) and the that’s 156 MILLION impressions every week. That resulted in 122K in sales last week.

So: 156M=122K and 4M=13K. If Kris had Jay Seans AI to sales ratio, he would have sold 3K and if Jay had Kris’s, he would have sold 507K.

The AI for hit songs is HUGE. Fans buy the first couple weeks. Then it’s promotion like airplay that carries the load.

  232. OK I don’t get it then. If they are spinning the crap out of it and it is hitting top 10 on their daily list, why is it not affecting sales?

Well, it’s a big station but it’s still only in one city. For all we know, the bulk of his single sales have been to New Yorkers.

Seems that radio play drives sales mainly when a song is heard so much that it becomes at least a bit of an earworm. So if LLWD hasn’t become an earworm in more than a couple of cities so far, then that would explain the lower sales.

Furthermore, a bunch of the play is at HAC (and even some AC??? — I forget). And it’s a lot harder for a song to become an earworm on the AC formats because they simply don’t play any song nearly as often as the Pop stations will play a particular song. HAC/AC also play tons of older material as well, so a new song may be added to the playlist and get play, but not on the kind of hourly or every-three-hourly basis you can get on pop. And thus it takes longer for AC/HAC songs to become I-gotta-buy-that earworms.

  233. Actually, the overall count for LLWD is 1377 as of yesterday, pretty evenly split between Top40 and HAC.

Yes, this is the total so far, the comparison I was making was between the weekly totals. It’s usually what is used in order to evaluate the trend, increase or decrease.

  234. was it a bonus track, or was it done as a sale that they will later reverse when they deliver the album. My guess is the latter.

THis is confusing to me. What is the bottom line? What will it do to the numbers?-in plain simple english?

Maybe.

    Yeah, I agree.

Also agree about loving Jill Scott! And, yep, you don’t hear as much about her new projects. …

I do think that casual readers are likely to see a lot more about Idol winners’ projects than they do about somebody like Jill Scott’s, though, who is a musician in a less-high-selling genre and has never been a reality tv star!

  236. Kris needs to make it onto the charts, either Pop or HAC. Once he’s on the charts smaller market radio stations will add it to their playlists.

A couple of years ago, I talked with a program director of a smaller radio outlet about how songs make their playlists. He said that they don’t play a song until they’re on the chart for HAC. (It was a HAC station, but I assume that Pop works the same way.)

    Here’s Kris’s spins per mediabase.

    10/14/2009 AI: 4.613, Total: 498, HAC: 237, Pop: 261

Right now, LLWD is getting total weekly spins of around 500, split between HAC and Pop. It needs to be in the 300+ range to make it onto HAC. So he’s getting close there. The pop chart is going to be more difficult to crack. You need close to 1000 weekly spins to make that chart.

To Date: AI: 15.409, Total: 1377, HAC: 586, Pop: 602

  237. Folks thought that the label had no confidence in David Cook. Archie is all over the place. Where is David?

This year if there is no TFM and AMA which are not controlled by RCA, people would’ve thought the same except that it would seem more acceptable because Adam is a runner up.

Kris has the first single out 3 weeks ago, which was debut in the largest top 40 station, add this week, can be downloaded from itune and just has a banner on Z100; he has single cover and album cover that are beautifully made, his album has a name and can be pre-ordered long time ago, he just did his single live today, and will perform it in more coming concerts his label arranges for him. he is forming his own band with whom he will be touring next February.

Now for Adam, he has almost no promotion from his label after the tour (RS cover, tour headliners, TFM and AMA, top 10 in Amazon are not controlled by RCA). RCA didn’t announce his album can be pre-ordered on Amazon, it hasn’t pick his first single, let alone debut date, and his album name is TBD. He doesn’t have tour date.

If there’s no buzz from outside the label, Adam is locked in studio and would’ve been invisible as in David’s case last year. Twitter helps generate grassroot buzz this year, which benefits Adam who have more online vocal fans.

  238. There have been idols who did not have fanbases that appeared in large number at sites like these, but sold a whole lot of albums/songs the first time they appeared in public to promote it.

I know Carrie is always brought up when this is mentioned, but I feel like this year’s situation is much different than Carrie’s. Wasn’t it confirmed that Carrie was always #1 in votes from the very beginning? Kris came on strong late in the game, so I doubt that’s true for him.

I never posted about Idol during Carrie’s season because people on the internet held her in extreme dislike. It seemed pointless. Danny equals Carrie more than Kris, IMO.

Kris has always seemed well liked and popular. He seemed to have a strong internet fanbase at one time. I’m not sure what happened, but maybe they just post somewhere else now.

  239. WAY OT

Anyone watching CNN or other news channels watching this breaking story about a 6-year-old boy floating around in the airspace around Denver by himself in a homemade balloon? Evidently he climbed in and the balloon took of with him in it.

    YIKES

  240. I do think that casual readers are likely to see a lot more about Idol winners’ projects than they do about somebody like Jill Scott’s, though, who is a musician in a less-high-selling genre and has never been a reality tv star!

Yay for the Jill Scott love!

True dat on idols being more high profile than Jilly from Philly. Point taken. I should have used Kanye or somebody like that. Heh.

I’m just trying to give Kris the benefit of the doubt, since we’ve been here before where things look almost certainly one way but play out completely differently. I’m trying to be prudent!

Kris has always seemed well liked and popular. He seemed to have a strong internet fanbase at one time. I’m not sure what happened, but maybe they just post somewhere else now.

I know some of them are on ontd-ai, according to girly girl. The adam online love is pretty intense everywhere, they just may have drifted offline all together. I do think he’s well liked. We’ll see.

  241. Trina: ‘Invisible’ wasn’t released as a retail single just a radio single. I think the video actually got more exposure because at the time TRL was HUGE and Claymates made sure it was a constant figure on there. IIRC it was even retired which not many videos did.

Thanks, so “Invisible” wasn’t a commercial retail single. Digital single sales were not part of the Hot 100 until Feb 2005 — so this in not comp to 2009.

Legal music downloads were first compiled by Billboard in 2003, in February 2005 digital sales for singles started to be included in the Billboard Hot 100 and other Billboard charts.

  242. Maybe both Adam and Kris will make a new presedence and not really follow previous idol alum tracks. Though I totally agree that Danny is more like Carrie than Kris is (though I think Carrie plays guitar too?).

  243. If that is Kris’s friend Cale Mills he was performing with today there has been a lot of information already collected on him.

Cale: He’s the dude who went with Kris and Daniel to Idol auditions in Louisville last year.

From later video posts it appears to be true.

  244. If there’s no buzz from outside the label, Adam is locked in studio and would’ve been invisible as in David’s case last year. Twitter helps generate grassroot buzz this year, which benefits Adam who have more online vocal fans.

I strongly suspect that, had there been no buzz from outside the label, that RCA would have invested a little more to Adam’s build up. As it is, however, why should they spend their time and energy when he is getting over-the-top free promotion from “outside the label”. They can save their money and resources for another day. Adam has already risen to the top of the sales charts and promotion opportunities without it.

Any marketer will tell you the tool that sells the best is “word of mouth”. That’s what has created the biggest and best buzz for Adam. folks inside and out of the Idol Bubble are talking about him . .. . and waiting . . . .

I’m confused, what were you responding to? I meant GMA concerts are much like talk show promo appearances in that they aren’t elusive super special gigs outside of 19’s control. I know the Fall concerts and Summer concerts are different, but I meant that I believe GMA concerts are arranged like other talk shows appearances.

Ah well I know it’s amusing thinking back once everything is out there but I’ll admit I was one who was absolutely certain Archie would outsell DC in album sales due to LO vs. Crush sales.

When Archie opened so big, I was crossing my fingers that DC would just at least match his first week numbers. I was shocked and pleased when DC ended up selling 280K that first week, which far exceeded my expectations based on LO’s performance.

  246. See’ ¦I never knew this until I started reading at mjs. Are a large percentage of [the kid’s] spins coming from these radio stations in Cinci and Chicago?

I dont follow it that closely, but these two were among the early spin leaders They are also owned by the same company, so this was probably a package deal. Concert in Cinci (Idol winner does this one every year) and concert in Chicago. Spins on both station.

Every act who wants significant airplay has to play this game. It’s just business. They could call spins advertisments and sell them off a rate card, but the stations and the record companies want to preserve the illusion that these songs are picked and played for other reasons.

  247. folks inside and out of the Idol Bubble are talking about him . .. . and waiting . . . .

..and Adam is tossing anf turning is his sleep…

  248. Maybe both Adam and Kris will make a new presedence and not really follow previous idol alum tracks.

At the end of the day I think each idol alum has had its own different path. Kelly, Carrie, Cook, Jordin, Archie, Hudson, Daughtry, Clay, Taylor, Kellie… all have made it in different ways.

  249. I’m just trying to give Kris the benefit of the doubt, since we’ve been here before where things look almost certainly one way but play out completely differently. I’m trying to be prudent!

    Definitely.

I think I come at this from a somewhat different perspective than many. Since my top Idol is Elliott, a third-place finisher who ended up with a platinum-selling single and gold album, I have been focusing on the idea that, even if you don’t have rabid immediate AI-based fans to give you the sales, you *can* get them afterward. So at this point, it doesn’t seem to me as if Kris really needs the benefit of the doubt! For me, it’s just, Okay, his Idol fans are deciding not to buy that single. But … the proof of what will happen with Kris’s sales is still out there awaiting his impact on the general public ….

Elliott’s online fanbase has long been rabid, but still not big enough to really get him big sales. He got them anyway, though. (at least on the first album and single … )

  250. Maybe.

OT, but Jill is starring in a tv series in Botswana(Southern Africa) called the “The #1 Lady Detective’s Agency” and has got the accent down to a T. Just for your info..I’m a fan of her music as well

  251. No one was in the balloon? It’s down now. Where is the boy?

  252. Q3: was it a bonus track, or was it done as a sale that they will later reverse when they deliver the album. My guess is the latter.

alaadam: THis is confusing to me. What is the bottom line? What will it do to the numbers?-in plain simple english?

Probably: If there are 5,000 Kris Allen pass downloads of LLWD, it will be recorded as 5,000 units sold when they are downloaded. Then when these 5,000 people download the album, the LLWD sales will go down by 5,000 and the album that includes LLWD will go up 5,000.

UNLESS they do the LLWD Pass download as a bonus (no value track) then it will not be reported to SoundScan at all. IMO this would be the best way to do it — but probably not what they will do.

Nielsen SoundScan is full of issues but it is better than the pre-SoundScan reporting system — by far. The biggest challenges are that some sales are not included — but it does give a relative measure of what is sold and captures most sales.

Billboard is an attempt to measure song popularity. Currently they use SoundScan sales (retail, digital and certain events) and radio airplay. It ignores TV audiences completely. They are working on how to better reflect online popularity in the Billboard charts. It is a difficult problem. The 4 major labels support the radio-oriented chart methodology because it gives them and advantage. Indie artists are pushing for some measure on online popularity because it give them a better shot of charting.

RIAA is based on industry shipments less returns — it also has accuracy issues.

  253. Apparently Archie’s parents have filed for divorce.

Aww, sending positive vibes towards Archie. Sounds like this was a long time coming, so it’s all for the best, I think.

In the court papers, James Jeffrey requests that Lupe pay him $349 in child support each month, they both waved any alimony requests.

Why would Jeff ask Lupe for child support when they’re getting joint custody? Is Jeff still managing Archie? Confused… then bothered that I know this or care. Ugh, tabloid culture!

  254. mj: On my way to the hotel! Viva Las Vegas!

    Have a great time!

Remember: , ‘What happens there stays there’

  255. David A’s parents divorcing…..how sad…..my prayers go out to all of them in this hard time.

  256. Why would Jeff ask Lupe for child support when they’re getting joint custody?

To prove that he’s the big deadbeat jerk I suspected he was?

  257. Here’s to MJ (combining classic rock melodies, guitars, and synth/pop beats, of course):

    Viva Las Vegas:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXh3VLraixA

Stay away from anything that would have you singing Gram Parson’s sad-song lyrics about Las Vegas.

    Oooh, Las Vegas

Well, the first time I lose I drink whiskey
Second time I lose I drink gin
Third time I lose I drink anything
’cause I think I’m gonna win

    Ooh, Las Vegas
Ain’t no place for a poor boy like me
    Ooh, Las Vegas
Ain’t no place for a poor boy like me
Every time I hit your crystal city you know
You’re gonna make a wreck outta me

Well, the Queen of Spades is a friend of mine
The Queen of Hearts is a bitch
Someday when I clean up my mind
I’ll find out which is a which

    Ooh, Las Vegas
Ain’t no place for a poor boy like me
    Ooh, Las Vegas
Ain’t no place for a poor boy like me
Every time I hit your crystal city you know
You’re gonna make a wreck outta me

Well, I spend all night with the dealer
    Tryin’ to get ahead
Spend all day at the Holiday Inn
Tryin’ to get out of bed

    Ooh, Las Vegas
Ain’t no place for a poor boy like me
    Ooh, Las Vegas
Ain’t no place for a poor boy like me
Every time I hit your crystal city you know
You’re gonna make a wreck outta me

  258. I strongly suspect that, had there been no buzz from outside the label, that RCA would have invested a little more to Adam’s build up.

My understanding is RCA tends to promote its artist’s single late in timeline as compared to Jiva. The buzz from outside the label not only saves RCA money and resources for other use, but also bring up Adam’s promotion to a much earlier day than RCA would have in its plan. Otherwise, there would be an Adam-vacuum and Kris-congest period as in Davids’ case.

  259. I am confident sales of LLWD will follow increased spin count. That’s the way it works. I’ve been watching the spin counts, and they’ve been increasing steadily almost every day. Yesterday his spins were over 100 for the first time, and that will build on itself.

So, I’ve bookmarked the Mediabase Adds site to check up on how the single(s) are doing, but my page doesn’t show any new adds since 10/13. Is it not being updated? Am I going to the wrong site? Anyone have a link?

  260. Apparently Archie’s parents have filed for divorce.

    LINK

Yeah, I read that earlier. I feel badly for the family…but then I don’t because I don’t like that guy. But joint custody and the father, the one caught in a prostitution sting operation, who used to claim to be one of Archie’s co-managers (yes?) is the spouse asking his wife for child support? pffft. He seems like such loser to me. JMHO of course.

  261. Rick Springfield was right Archie’s mom is hot! Sad about the divorce but it may be for the best.

  262. ptslittlecomment

Adam has been getting outside the Idol buzz before the show ended (EW, RS). Most recently, the 2012 TfM soundtrack, and if that wasn’t enough, his MV trailer playing before MJ’s movie. Other outside AI bubble: the AMA announcement gig and AMA performance; Oprah; SNL. And that is just the beginning.

  263. Why would Jeff ask Lupe for child support when they’re getting joint custody?

To prove that he’s the big deadbeat jerk I suspected he was?

Well yeah but I think we also got the memo about that when his massage parlor indiscretion was exposed.

So if I’m reading the news correctly, David’s parents filed for divorce in February and the media is just getting around to reporting on it. I mean, they reported on the arrest in June and saved the divorce news for October? Uh huh.

I have no doubt David and his siblings have known this and have been dealing with the fallout for months.

No wonder David was able to gift his sister Jazzy cats for her birthday. Jeff probably isn’t living under the same roof as Lupe anymore so his allergies didn’t have to factor in.

The divorce at least seems civil but the child support issue is a WTF. I would think it’d be the other way around.

  264. So, I’ve bookmarked the Mediabase Adds site to check up on how the single(s) are doing, but my page doesn’t show any new adds since 10/13. Is it not being updated? Am I going to the wrong site? Anyone have a link?

    We need a FAQ. Stat.

Adds normally occur on Monday or Tuesday. Go look at the add dates for some singles. Pop adds on Tuesday. Hot AC on Monday. Sometimes there are auto-adds during the week or some random station decides to add at an odd time, but it’s perfectly normal for there not to be adds everyday.

There is no cause for either panic or celebration on the lack of adds for two days.

In other news, that kid that was or was not in the balloon was once on that show “Wife Swap”. Switched with a family of safety experts. Eeep.

  265. The 4 major labels support the radio-oriented chart methodology because it gives them and advantage. Indie artists are pushing for some measure on online popularity because it give them a better shot of charting.

Seems like that would also shore up the perception that the last-century label-to-radio-to-hit paradigm still rules. That it works. That radio matters more than TV or Word-of-Mouth. When record sales plummet each year. But it’s a power structure. With a lot of people’s power at stake. So if the charting changes, power shifts.

And if there is no universal “measuring stick” of all the many indie downloads, or back of the car, or whatever new distribution appears then the aggregates can’t be compared. Like all Billboard charted sales versus the ever-changing technology of ways people access new music each year. (Streaming on Spotify in Europe for example. Clicking on YouTube for free. Downloading directly from an artist’s website.)

    Really interesting post, Q3.

  266. This is actually their second filing for divorce. The first came in 2002, but they backed out right as David was gaining attention for his singing.

    I didn’t know that.

  267. Archuleta divorce….Actually in the papers filed in Utah Jeff is the petitioner and is asking for legal custody of the kids with Lupe having visitation rights. That is why he he asking for child support. Jeff filed, not Lupe. Now a judge will decide how things work out and who really gets what. (had a Utah divorce once).

All I know is that instincts are oftentimes right and that the unwarranted support that Jeff got from Archie fans is coming back to bite them. I will never understand why they didn’t believe Naomi Judd when she talked about the Archuleta Father/Son dynamics. What ax would she have to grind. (Ok, now I’ve said that this issue can go to the back of the closet).

I just hope that Archie’s contract with his Dad (his co-manager) isn’t such that it would hurt David in anyway. This Kid doen’t deserve to be tangled in anymore lies and deceptions.

  268. leome

Maybe both Adam and Kris will make a new presedence and not really follow previous idol alum tracks.

At the end of the day I think each idol alum has had its own different path. Kelly, Carrie, Cook, Jordin, Archie, Hudson, Daughtry, Clay, Taylor, Kellie’ ¦ all have made it in different ways.

ITA each one is unique and talented — and all have found different paths. I think that Kris, Adam, Alli, Danny, Matt, Scott and Michael all have professional music careers ahead of them. Anoop and Megan maybe successful. Of the AI8 finalists, the only one I have big doubts about is Lil. Everything beyond making a good living doing what you love is a bonus.

  269. Archuleta divorce’ ¦.Actually in the papers filed in Utah Jeff is the petitioner and is asking for legal custody of the kids with Lupe having visitation rights. That is why he he asking for child support. Jeff filed, not Lupe. Now a judge will decide how things work out and who really gets what. (had a Utah divorce once).

The media is reporting joint custody. They wouldn’t have reported that if they didn’t see a copy of the divorce petition, right? Plus, it’s been months since the divorce was filed and since then Lupe, David and his siblings have seemed closer than ever, even taking road trips together when he’s home. The child support issue seems to suggest she has more income available than he does but who the hell knows.

  270. Wait – aren’t people mixing up some of the old divorce papers with the new filing? The wanting child support from Lupe is from the pre star search divorce filing. Also the Jeff wanting custody. It is all different now I am sure. That was years ago but the divorce papers are in the public record and some places are quoting those?

  271. My personal feelings were that Kris had more offline and casually online fans than Adam’s more dedicated online fan presence. And yes, I was reminded of people like Carrie as well, especially even with the whole tour stuff. Or Fantasia and Jordin are other good examples of winners who didn’t seem like they had a ton of online support, but both have some sales successes, for sure. Certainly more than the online community would have seemed to indicate.

So because Kris’s fans might also be more offline or casual internet fans, then yes, they’re going to need radio and more advertising/promotion to know about Kris’s single and later album, and to rememeber how much they liked him. Oh and that’s a catchy song, they should buy it or that album when it comes out.

I will just say people getting their news or info from the internet increases all the time, but I would also say there is a difference between people who hang out here, a site devoted to AI or other more general sites. There can be a fair amount of users and ones who follow AI, but only during the season. Some will care enough beyond that to be invested enough to look for news in that forum later on, if someone posts it. But otherwise they’re probably only slightly more likely to know or care about an AI song than a non-AI watcher, so it’s really based on the music for them. Not their investment or attachment to an Idol.

At least this has been my experience and idea about Kris’s fanbase. Which just means to me if he gets exposure/promotion, and has good enough music, I think he’s going to do fine. I still think, that as per those spins, Kris can create some very radio friendly music, so that is going to help him in the long run.

  272. cmom, the ones saying it are dated 2009, at least in the link at radar.

Duke: may depend where you are, and some stores dont put out xmas cds till november. I know my walmart didnt have it out, but they didnt have any xmas cds out.

  273. Lots of speculation here recently about the possibility of Adam Lambert
touring with Lady Gaga. Looks like that won’t happen any time soon. She announced a new North American tour, “The Monster Ball,” beginning November 27 with Kid Cudi as her supporting act.

  274. The papers are online and available to read…they are public record. You can’t have joint custody and then request child support. The custodial parent ALWAYS gets child support from the non-custodial parent. I think the report took bits and pieces from the actual document to sensationalize the whole thing.

And we don’t know if the divorce is final or if it is still be negotiated, and I would suspect that Lupe has temporary custody if it hasn’t been settled. Besides, in Utah, children are asked who they want to be with…not always granted but the courts do take the children’s wants into consideration.

Besides, in Utah only one of the parties need to file. It has no bearing on the ultimate outcome because the other party has a right to dispute any information brought up in the petitioner’s divorce filing. ’nuff said.

Papers are dated Feb. 5, 2009

  275. Can you even imagine the amount of people that are going to see Time For Miracles on October 28th? It is boggling my mind! They are expecting THIS IS IT to have a bigger 5 day opening than The Dark Knight:

    http://www.mtv.com/movies/news/articles/1623916/20091015/story.jhtml?rsspartner=rssYahooNewscrawler

Many of the venues are IMAX. And can you imagine seeing Adam in IMAX with 6 channel magnetic IMAX sound? Bet that this special 2012 trailer was recorded using the IMAX digital sound DDP designed by Sonics. High-power, wide frequency, dynamic range … frequency response of 20 ‘“ 20.000 Hz is maintained over the entire audio spectrum of ten octaves. (Six octaves is found in conventional cinemas.)

I am jealous of anyone who is near an IMAX that is showing this.

  276. I was shocked and pleased when DC ended up selling 280K that first week, which far exceeded my expectations based on LO’s performance.

It is one of the happiest moments in my live. Rollercoaster ride from end of Sept to mid November 2008. O..M..G..

  277. Wait ‘“ aren’t people mixing up some of the old divorce papers with the new filing? The wanting child support from Lupe is from the pre star search divorce filing. Also the Jeff wanting custody. It is all different now I am sure. That was years ago but the divorce papers are in the public record and some places are quoting those?

I believe you are right cmom. There are two sets of divorce papers and some of the terms stated are from the 2002 filing. Joint custody and shared assets are current.

  278. Duke…

It’s probably sitting in the back room until they put up their Christmas displays. It was probably shipped but I’m sure a stock clerk doesn’t quite know where to put holiday music just yet.

ETA….man I’m slow, sorry this was already said…I think I’ll just chill for a bit.

  279. Apparently, Utah determines child support similarly to Florida. It’s formulaic, with each parent contributing a percentage according to their percentage of combined income. If one parent is unemployed, but determined to be employable, minimum wage will be attributed to that parent and figured into the combined income figure. No free rides for stay-at-home mom and dads. Usually, tho, the share of the parent with the lesser income is deducted from the amount of the other parent’s obligation when it comes time to pay if that parent has custody. In Florida, the total amount of child support is based on the combines income of the parents and the number of minor children to be supported. I don’t see anything unusual here.

Reminds me that Adam’s parents divorced when he was 19, too. I’m sure it’s not a happy time for Archie.

  280. You can’t have joint custody and then request child support. The custodial parent ALWAYS gets child support from the non-custodial parent.

You can share joint legal custoday, with one parent having “physical” custody. The parent without the physical custody would then pay child support.

Also, Jeff clearly is a douchebag regardless of what the old or current divorce papers say.

  281. Why is Kris performing at a high school?

The Cincinnati radio station has an annual fundraising-for-cancer contest for schools and the prize is a concert. Last year it was Archie who sang, this year Kris. … Same school won both times, it seems. They’re good fundraisers — or else the other schools are bad ones ….

  282. That clip of Kris singing Britney is fun, love the girls singing along and Kris’s expression when doing it. Not thrilled with it as a song, it’s no Heartless there, but it was a fun sing along and the girls loved discovering what it was and singing along, so good choice.

  283. robininny: Lots of speculation here recently about the possibility of Adam Lambert touring with Lady Gaga. Looks like that won’t happen any time soon. She announced a new North American tour, ‘The Monster Ball,’ beginning November 27 with Kid Cudi as her supporting act.

Adam already qwashed that rumor in interviews on 10/13/09. But Kid Cudi is only signed for the first part of the tour. LOL! the rumor is thus still alive.

Frankly, I do not think that Adam – Lady Gaga is the best combo for Adam — even though she is a bigger act. I would rather see Adam follow Cook’s path and headline — plus I would love to see Adam in a smaller venue vs. open for someone on an arena tour.

My dream Adam tour is to see him booked in concert halls/performing arts centers with really great acoustics. These were very common venues for theatrical rock acts in the 1970’s. So just give me Adam at Carnegie Hall in the Isaac Stern Auditorium with fire, dancers, rock and electro musicians — and the New York Philharmonic. I dream big!

  284. Went to Best Buy & Wal-Mart and neither had Archie’s X-mas album

I still feel like it’s early. Hopefully they’ll start stocking it as Christmas approaches.

Can you even imagine the amount of people that are going to see Time For Miracles on October 28th? It is boggling my mind! They are expecting THIS IS IT to have a bigger 5 day opening than The Dark Knight:

The TFM/2012 promo is a real coup for Adam. You can’t buy exposure like this. Or can you? I feel like the people behind THIS IS IT could charge a pretty penny for a slot before the movie if they wanted, but I guess that doesn’t usually happen? How does it work anyway with an exclusive arrangement like this?

I’m also curious, what usually happens in terms of cost-sharing between the label and the movie studio when a movie uses a music video as part of its promotional roll out? I mean, you’re promoting the movie (benefits the movie studio, but also the song (RCA), but also the soundtrack (different label)

  285. I hate arena concerts…can’t see or hear a bloody thing and it tends to be more of a “trip” for the concert goers than a show. I, too, love concert halls, assigned permanent seating, great accustics, and respectful audiences (its harder to rock-out in an auditorium, its made for sitting).

  286. thx, lucy for the HS info. I didn’t make the connection from the HS to the event.

  287. Reading through the divorce documents now. Jeff and Lupe agreed to joint custody and Lupe (the respondent) was named “primary physical custodian” of their three minor children. Now that makes sense.

  288. Reminds me that Adam’s parents divorced when he was 19, too. I’m sure it’s not a happy time for Archie.

Adam was away working on the cruise ship when his parents divorced. His brother Neil prob had a harder time of it.

  289. I’m also curious, what usually happens in terms of cost-sharing between the label and the movie studio when a movie uses a music video as part of its promotional roll out? I mean, you’re promoting the movie (benefits the movie studio, but also the song (RCA), but also the soundtrack (different label)

It’s all Sony though, right? So that probably takes some of the guesswork out of it. They probably do a fair amount of joint stuff within the company, I would think … business synergies and all that.

  290. I mean, you’re promoting the movie (benefits the movie studio, but also the song (RCA), but also the soundtrack (different label)

Its all really sony which is the parent company of RCA. But the soundtrack and the video and the single will be released through Sony, Adam is just on loan.

Besides doesn’t Sony “own part or all” of Michaels catalog. And aren’t they doing the “This Is It” movie? I’m speculating here!!

The movie 2012, the MJ This is It movie, and Adam Lambert are all Sony Entertainment. This is quintessential cross-promotion between the music and movie divisions of the same company.

  292. That clip of Kris singing Britney is fun, love the girls singing along and Kris’s expression when doing it.

Haha, I thought that performance was great! Awesome sing along too and a perfect choice for a high school!

  293. thx, lucy for the HS info. I didn’t make the connection from the HS to the event.

I can see why you wouldn’t! I only know because I had the same reaction last year when Archie did this — Why the heck is he singing at a high school? …

Actually, even knowing what the event is, I still find it a little odd! These kids really didn’t have to raise very much money to score a private concert with a kind of major star-on-the-rise ….

  294. Reminds me that Adam’s parents divorced when he was 19, too. I’m sure it’s not a happy time for Archie.

I was thinking this, too. Plus, as sidewalkstory said, Adam was away from home at the time, with a younger sibling still there. Archie’s away a lot, too, and he’ll be touring to support the Christmas album.

Sounds like Adam might be a good person for Archie to talk to.

So just give me Adam at Carnegie Hall in the Isaac Stern Auditorium with fire, dancers, rock and electro musicians ‘” and the New York Philharmonic. I dream big!

And I will be right there to go with you, Q3. That’s right in my wheelhouse. Any other takers? The 2010 Adam Lambert Experience: come one, come all!

  296. major star-on-the-rise

I think we would all be surprised to know how many of these type of gigs even major stars do…unless you are in the upper-upper echelons and wear a paper crown and such. These radio gigs and interviews are bread and butter promo for almost all “radio” stars.

  297. It’s not odd at all for Kris to perform at the school. If you go to the website, you’ll notice that big stars have performed there as well.

  298. The movie 2012, the MJ This is It movie, and Adam Lambert are all Sony Entertainment. This is quintessential cross-promotion between the music and movie divisions of the same company.

Doh, should’ve looked into it more. Makes mucho sense. Synergy…

I hate to be grumpy, but would it be possible to start a separte thread to discuss Archie’s parent’s divorce so people can avoid it. I don’t even want to read about David Archuletta, let alone his parents’ marital problems. I respect that others may enjoy that, but is there a way to separate it from talking about Idol and music and stuff?

Seriously? Archie is a former Idol, so how is news about him not “about Idol and music and stuff”?

  299. major star-on-the-rise

I think we would all be surprised to know how many of these type of gigs even major stars do’ ¦unless you are in the upper-upper echelons and wear a paper crown and such. These radio gigs and interviews are bread and butter promo for almost all ‘radio’ stars.

Yeah, I know that. Totally agree with this. …

I was being unclear. I wasn’t really talking about the fact that this is a small radio event. I know that they all do those — that’s the payola that everybody denies is happening!

But the thing that seems kind of odd about this one is that I think I read about either this year’s or last year’s contest that the winning school only raised something like $3,000 or thereabouts!

It seems like a very piddling amount of money for the *winner* of such a contest to have ponied up in a metropolitan area the size of Cincinnati! Makes me think that nobody really cared very much about cancer or about the concert, or about both, maybe!

Crap, I remember back in the 70s in a smaller school than this raising *way* more money than this on some fundraisers! And we’re talking before 30 extra years of inflation. Maybe I am misremembering what I read about the amount of money raised by this school — but if I’m right. Well, let’s just say I’m not impressed by the fundraising capacity of the Cincinnati area!

  300. Man, I feel for Archie. He’s such a nice kid. I hope the media doesn’t get down to the gritty details. Just report it once and leave it alone.

  301. Streaming on Spotify in Europe for example. Clicking on YouTube for free. Downloading directly from an artist’s website.)

I read an article about how Spotify is at danger of running out of business. Apparently not enough people will bother to pay for music when they can get it legally for free. And other places like Pandora have been hit with all sorts of rules and fees that limit its growth.

It seems like a very piddling amount of money for the *winner* of such a contest to have ponied up in a metropolitan area the size of Cincinnati! Makes me think that nobody really cared very much about cancer or about the concert, or about both, maybe!

I think these girls had less than a week to raise this money.

  302. The movie 2012, the MJ This is It movie, and Adam Lambert are all Sony Entertainment. This is quintessential cross-promotion between the music and movie divisions of the same company.

The beauty of having a tie in with 2012 is the possibility to ride the coattails of their enormous advertizing machine.

  303. I was shocked and pleased when DC ended up selling 280K that first week, which far exceeded my expectations based on LO’s performance.

It is one of the happiest moments in my live. Rollercoaster ride from end of Sept to mid November 2008. O..M..G..

    Indeed, I remember too! (Only I wasn’t shocked, I was a Believer. LOL j/k)

  304. Q3
October 15, 2009 at 4:33 pm Adam…qwashed that rumor [touring with Lady Gaga] in interviews….Kid Cudi is only signed for the first part of the tour. LOL! the rumor is thus still alive.

Lady Gaga’s Web site states, “Kid Cudi will be the supporting act for the entire tour.”

  305. Susan Boyle’s album cover revealed

Oh my heck, I first read that as Susan Boyle Revealed and had thes ghastly flashes of a Playboy spread. Somebody get me the smelling salts…

    That would not be swell.

  306. I may have missed this but AllAccess has a different banner for LLWD now. This was now has the 19 logo along with the Jive logo and has quotes from program directors..oh and they removed the download total.

eta: I just noticed DC’s Facebook posted this:

VIDEO: David and Carrie Underwood + Holiday Special News

EW.com just did a cool write ‘“up about Carrie Underwood’s upcoming Holiday Special, which will feature David in songs and skits. Pretty awesome, if only for the classic video they posted along with it. Check out David and Carrie’s brilliant version of Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Go Your Own Way’ below (ah, memories) and check out the full EW.com article here.

The people that run his FB better not be messin around and know for a fact he’ll be a part of the skits too!

  307. Clarification: After reading the divorce documents, it is Jeff who is required to pay Lupe a minimum of $349.60 in child support monthly as a base minimum. It’s right there in the document. The media needs to correct that. So joint custody with Lupe getting the “primary physical custody” and the child support payments.

  308. It seems like a very piddling amount of money for the *winner* of such a contest to have ponied up in a metropolitan area the size of Cincinnati! Makes me think that nobody really cared very much about cancer or about the concert, or about both, maybe!

I think these girls had less than a week to raise this money.

Okay, they’re off the hook then, lol.

Nevertheless, the radio station obviously has known for months that they were going to offer this concert as a prize for something. To me, it seems kind of stupid and cheesy of them, then, to make it “how much can you raise in a week?” They could have made it into a little more serious fundraiser if they wanted to. Kind of makes it seem that they don’t care much, to me.

  309. Here’s the video of Kris doing Hit Me Baby One More Time at his appearance this morning!

    “STILL BE-LIEVE!”

    haha

  310. That clip of Kris singing Britney is fun, love the girls singing along and Kris’s expression when doing it.

Haha, I thought that performance was great! Awesome sing along too and a perfect choice for a high school!

Although like I said, not a huge fan Kris’s version here, but it was a sing along, so there you go. But I’ve heard this done before like this Travis’s acoustic live Hit Me Baby which because it’s not at a high school with whatever acoustics and equipment or a sing-along, is an understandably better version to me. But I totally made allowances and enjoyed Kris’s performance for what it was…fun!

  311. Wonder why Kris did a cover of Hit Me One More Time…..Is Britney still with Jive?? IT was cute for the girls there I guess.

  312. Alaadam someone asked Kris what he sings in the shower and he answered Brittneys Hit me one more time. So I guess they asked him to sing it.

  313. Sorry if this has already been posted:

Walmart SoundcheckWMSoundcheck Despite rumors, Kris, Adam & Allison did NOT perform 4 Soundcheck! However, the 3 did stop by & chat: http://bit.ly/XqI3E #americanidol20 minutes ago from web

    Bummer. :(

  314. “The movie 2012, the MJ This is It movie, and Adam Lambert are all Sony Entertainment. This is quintessential cross-promotion between the music and movie divisions of the same company.”

This is quite a shocker. Let me get the smelling salts.

  315. Here are tweets from Kris’ sound check (this was an all-ages thing, separate from the performace tonight, which is only for people 21+).

He evidently sound checked Heartless, MITM and LLWD — so I’m assuming that’s what he’ll be performing tonight

Kay, tweets so far (copied from ontd_ai thread):

We all got these plastic passes with the new Kris mirror pic. AMAZING.

    So much screaming

He is on! Adorable as fuck. Playing with Cale. Giggly. Banter. Heartless now.

Man in the Mirror. Still hot as fuck

    Cale singing backup

    Blah blah cancer blah blah

Q and A! He is done with his part of the album. Loved songwriting the most. Dance moves his fave part of Idol. Proposal story.

    LLWD! It sounded awesome acoustic.

That was not an hour. I want my ten dollars back.

They have an autographed kris guitar for auction

And from soapy (a.k.a. endofthisphase on twitter)…

lmao omg kris came in a pink stretch limo

got video of everything including questions

@krisallen4real loved the soundcheck! kind of felt like a senior citizen in a sea of tweens but you know…

EDIT: I guess most of these tweets can be found on @krinja_signal. There should be more on there from the actual performance

EDIT: and some pictures. Look at the pink stretch limo!

  316. Wow, it appears Jeffy the Perv isn’t going for the jugular this time. Amazing how a public scandal will temper even the most ego maniacal among us. His last attempt at divorce involved attempted eviseration of his wife. I guess this is his attempt to stay in the somewhat good graces of his money maker.

  317. If anyone wants to follow the tweets from Kris’ sound check and/or performance today/tonight, here are some people who are there:

    @krinja_signal

  318. robininny: Lady Gaga’s Web site states, ‘Kid Cudi will be the supporting act for the entire tour.’

They split the tour into segments, he’s on for the “Monster Ball Tour”.

The ‘Monster Ball’ tour dates are listed below:

Jan 16 – Atlantic City , NJ at Borgata
Jan 20 – New York, NY at Radio City Music Hall
Jan 21 – New York, NY at Radio City Music Hall

Lady Gaga is also scheduled to tour in Feb 2010 — and I do NOT believe there is anything to the Lambert-Gaga Tour rumor, just saying it’s still alive and well in cyberspace and in the RW.

  319. Cale Mills is certainly HAWT! I remembered seeing him in the audience with Katy during one of S8 performance/result nite (might be the top 3 or 4 nite) and Katy jumped up and hugged him when Kris made it through. I sure was wondering who he is then and now I know. :)

  320. Hrm, GaGa is playing two nights in Boston. Tix will probably be around $50, so I will pass (if Adam were on the bill, then hells yes, I’d be there.)

  321. Ok so if Jeff is paying child support I guess that means David will be paying child support to mom. Jeff’s only real income is what he mooches from his son by playing “co manager.” Get a fricking job of your own, douchebag.

  322. Susan Boyle’s album cover revealed:

Just me, or does it look like Simon’s “falling in love” expression from the I Dreamed A Dream segment?

Thanks all for the updates from Kris’ events today :D Looks like he had fun and it’s going to a good cause. Very nice that those high schoolers were willing to give to charity.

My thoughts go out to Archie, he’s such a sweet kid (though I suspect probably tougher than he seems).

  323. So because Kris’s fans might also be more offline or casual internet fans, then yes, they’re going to need radio and more advertising/promotion to know about Kris’s single and later album, and to rememeber how much they liked him. Oh and that’s a catchy song, they should buy it or that album when it comes out.

Is this the latest theory? Kris’s fans don’t have access to the internet? They’re becoming as mysterious as Syesha’s fan base.

Sorry this maybe o/t. I cannot understand all the fans that are so caught up in the bromance of Kradam, but most fans do not want hear about Adam’s actual relationships such as Drake. I admit, I am confused. Adam cares about this person’ ¦.we should be respectful about that.

It makes sense if you think about it. Kradam lovers don’t like Drake since he spoils things for them. And even if that weren’t true any time an Idol acquires a significant other at least half their fan base jumps down the significant other’s throat with a microscope and it ain’t pretty. Nothing going on here that hasn’t happened before.

  324. Michael Slezak turned Kris’ impromptu cover of Hit Me Baby One More Time into an EW column/poll

slow news day in the life of Michael Slezak.

  325. Frankly, I do not think that Adam ‘“ Lady Gaga is the best combo for Adam ‘” even though she is a bigger act. I would rather see Adam follow Cook’s path and headline ‘” plus I would love to see Adam in a smaller venue vs. open for someone on an arena tour.

Considering the type of show Adam wants to put on — according to what has been reported here and elsewhere — following Cook’s path would not be the best bet for Adam. Cook plays at all types of venues. From very small clubs to outdoor festivals and fairs. He and his band don’t have much to carry with them. They can fit in any where, they are not costly, and they are low maintenance. Adam wants to have dancers and costumes and special effects and — of course — a band. That costs money, it’s harder to move around logistically and you need venues that can support all of that. That’s why opening up for a bigger act at larger venues sounds more reasonable for him. Kris is much more suited to Cook’s plan, based only upon what I’ve seen thus far. (We’ll see if he can sell-out or come close to selling out a tour like Cook has.)

  326. jpfan: ‘The movie 2012, the MJ This is It movie, and Adam Lambert are all Sony Entertainment. This is quintessential cross-promotion between the music and movie divisions of the same company.’

This is quite a shocker. Let me get the smelling salts.

“2012” promo is a big deal for Adam, don’t get me wrong. But any Adam promo is just a bonus for Sony Corp. because the tie in between “TII” and “2012” is to promote “2012” — just the the roadblock was to promote “2012”. Adam is just along for the ride — and not a bad one at that!

Just to put it all into perspective:

“2012” will generate $800+ million in worldwide gross; AEG predicts that “This Is It” will gross $250 million within 5 days — which seems a bit high but it will set records.

Sony has about $250 million in “2012” and over $100 milion in TII. (Columbia, which is owned by Sony, agreed to pay $60 million for rights to the project plus marketing and distro costs.)

IF Adam’s TBD is a monster hit and sells 3 million units that’s about $36 million in revenue. In other words — there is no chance that Adam means over $1 billion to Sony — lilke these two films — forget about ancillary revenue streams from the films.

  329. According to Q3, opening acts still pay their own way. Adam would get the benefit of larger venues and more exposure, but he’d still have to deal with the costs and logistics.

And at this point – I have no idea if he’d need the help. I’ve decided to stop being logical about Adam, because logic would never lead to where he is now. I can’t even guess what he’d need for his tour.

  330. Sassycatz: Considering the type of show Adam wants to put on ‘” according to what has been reported here and elsewhere ‘” following Cook’s path would not be the best bet for Adam. I really just meant being the headliner in smaller venues vs. an opening act in an arena tour.

But Adam could put together a small-scale tour with dancers, a band and simple staging and play 2,000 seat venues instead of big arenas. Look at the You Tube video of “Crazy — It’s Adam, some dancers and a chair. I am certain that an Adam tour would have higher production costs than Cook but it doesn’t need to be a massive arena production either.

  331. a great review for david a’s christmas cd… excerpts here, read more at the link…

David Archuleta – Christmas From the Heart

David Archuleta Is a Christmas Music Natural

Christmas From the Heart is the second studio album from David Archuleta, and, although it is a holiday collection, it is quite possibly a stronger album achievement than his last. His voice is perfectly suited for this type of material. David Archuleta’s voice is full and tremendously appealing to a wide range of listeners. He can stand up easily to big productions, but he avoids over singing and ever sounding bombastic. Christmas From the Heart is a holiday album you will happily return to in years to come…

David Archuleta’s Solid, Beautiful Voice at Christmas

There are no real missteps here. Christmas From the Heart is simply a solid, pleasing holiday album that will be welcome throughout the season and in years to come. If there is a lesson to learn for David Archuleta, it may be simply that his voice sounds best in the context of simple, uncomplicated accompaniment. Auto-tune and drum machine effects are not needed and likely even detract from a voice like Archuleta’s. He is a very talented traditional singer in the best sense of the term.

I agree. I have suspended logic when it comes to Adam. No one could have predicted the upcoming promo events — “2012”/TfF, TII, AMAs and Oprah!

  333. The best slot for Adam would be the 28th, right after his album drop. That’s the slot Beyonce had last year, the Saturday after her drop.

Yes, it probably would be the best date for him, usually we get info on host/musical performers for 4 shows so the 28th should be announced soon.

I am a little surprised that Carrie isn’t there, they love her at SNL so maybee she will get the 14th spot but Swift is booked for the 7th they may consider the 28th too.

  334. Taylor Swift hosting SNL? That’ll be interesting.

Even more after the fiasco that was her appearance last year but considering what happened in the VMA’s this year not surprising.
    Cue the Kanye jokes already.

  335. My prayers goes out to Archie and that God makes him strong to go through this. I guess everyone (almost ) goes thru some sadness in ones life.

  336. But Adam could put together a small-scale tour with dancers, a band and simple staging and play 2,000 seat venues instead of big arenas.

Yup. Lady Gaga’s been playing elaborate shows at mid-sized theaters.

the fiasco that was her appearance last year

What happened with Taylor on SNL last year? Other than bad singing (that’s expected- sorry, she seems like a nice girl, just don’t like her “singing”).

  339. What happened with Taylor on SNL last year? Other than bad singing (that’s expected- sorry, she seems like a nice girl, just don’t like her ‘singing’ ).

I think there was a technical problem on her first song and she sounded really bad and looked confused afterwards. Altough it wasn’t as bad as when Ashley Simpson performed but she didn’t look good at all.

  340. OT ‘“ They found the 6-year boy who was missing after that balloon chase in Colorado. He’s ok!

    I haven’t read it.

I think that is the whole point.. :-)

  348. Could you even imagine Adam pulling off a romantic lead opposite Penelope Cruz? Do you even know what that would do to women all across the country?

  349. from the “Shades of Luz” website http://www.shadesofluz.com/

Shades of Luz is a modern day Don Quixote, a picaresque rich in characters searching for love and meaning in an otherwsie manic-paced world. Grad school dropout Benny Fluke is a philosopher, monkey-trainer, wine snob, and a strip club connoisseur. Above and beyond all that he is a romantic at heart and is desperate to win the love of Luz, the hot-blooded, ambitious beauty who keeps boomeranging into his life. Something from Luz’s past inextricably bonds them together, and Benny will not stop until she is his. Their delightful repartee is crisp, witty, and sumptuously engaging. Never before in the history of literature has a stuffed animal vendor risen the ranks to become thumb-wrestling champ. But, will he get the girl?

  350. I hope there will be a seperate thread for the Archuleta divorce too. I’ve been wanting that man out of the picture for quite awhile, and would love to hear the thoughts of Archie’s fans (of which I am one.) As others upthread have stated, it’s at least as idol related as Drake, Kate, Elliott’s mom, Cook’s brother, Pickler’s dad/mom, and worst of course, Hudson’s family tragedy. In general, these are things that effect an idol personally/and perhaps could professionally.

  351. I would love to see Adam do movies one day.. that would be awsome… something like the MAD HATTER

  352. Could you even imagine Adam pulling off a romantic lead opposite Penelope Cruz? Do you even know what that would do to women all across the country?

On one hand, I would want to be Penelope Cruz, but on the other, I wouldn’t want to be, if you know what I mean.

  353. Mtlfan

It wasn’t like a regular sound check. It was more like a special pre-performance performance. They sold tickets and everything. The “sound check” was all ages, so that people who are too young to coem to the actual Bosom ball tonight could see Kris and the other musicians (have to be at least 21 years old to get into the actual Bosom ball).

  354. Is this the latest theory? Kris’s fans don’t have access to the internet? They’re becoming as mysterious as Syesha’s fan base.

No one ever said they don’t have access to the internet, well not me at any rate. Just that maybe more of Kris’s presumably large fanbase, seeing as he won n’all, might be more offlline or maybe more casual internet users. Something so that they’re not in the AI bubble so that they might not know as much about Kris’s songs/album information, so that’s why his sales numbers haven’t yet been stellar, imho, so why isn’t his winners fanbase buying more? But I hope and think can be with some radio play and promotion these types of fans will be exposed and more will buy it.

Because I for one am not ready to pronounce the song dead and buried based on two whole days of having the song available for radio adds and doing so well there. So I think, or hope, that sales will increase in the next few weeks with more radio play by getting the word out to his maybe more offline and casual internet fanbase. Plus that the increased radio play and promotion will get it the non-AI people liking/buying the song that any Idol needs to succeed.

So no comparing Kris to Syesha just yet and hopefully never.

  355. Cate: who provides security for these events, the venue or the artist?

Depends on the contracts — for big tours, there is tour security provided by the tour promoter that travels with the tour, and the venues provide security and charge the promoter.

There are a lot of way to set up the business arrangements for concert tours — but for new artists, it is grueling and they don’t make a lot of money. But almost all the time the artist get the revenue from the merchandise and CD’s sold at the concert — so if you want to support a new artist but the T-shirt and the CD at the concert — particurly for opening acts.

The Idol alums with major label contracts are fine. But for someone like Michael Sarver or Matt, it’s gonna be a real struggle. I am not a big Chris Sligh fan but his blog piece with advice to the Idols was pretty good advice.

I don’t worry about Kris spending too much money — I worry he might be a bit to cheap.

And I actually don’t worry about Adam because I think he has been around the business long enough to be smart about the money.

  356. Michael Slezak turned Kris’ impromptu cover of Hit Me Baby One More Time into an EW column/poll

That clip was very short, and the crowd sang over him, but it reminded me of why I liked Kris on season 8.He’s not scared to tackle any pop or R&B song….even if it’s just him, guitar and no backup . Even more funny is that he does it without looking remotely awkward and pulls it off. The guy has soul. I hope Jive pulls out all the stops on him and promotes him the way he deserves to be.

  357. Kris will do GREAT people stop worring.. hmmm am I telling people what to do!!! SORRY Continue…

  358. There are too many covers of Hit Me Baby that have already been done. Slezak should know this- why he is trying to get Kris to do yet another cover is beyond me.

  359. There are too many covers of Hit Me Baby that have already been done. Slezak should know this- why he is trying to get Kris to do yet another cover is beyond me

I know, I linked one of my faves from Travis already, but just put in Hit Me Baby plus the word “acoustic” into YouTube and there are tons of versions…most very similiar, or frankly better, than Kris’s.

But Slezak is no doubt just being facetious with that.

  360. With the entire Adam Storm swirling, I forgot about the Zodiac Show Documentary.

Cherry and Bachar have taken the 2008 show and created a detailed documentary, called The Zodiac Show: Metamorphosis, that they hope will surface at film festivals. See how a simple documentation turned into documentary which is now being considered for Sundance.

Here a great article and interview of former Pussycat Doll Carmit Bachar from RockStar Weekly.

Brief: Former Pussycat Doll Says Adam Lambert Opened Up Glam Rock

    Long article and interview audios:
    http://www.rockstarweekly.com/content/view/988/199/

  361. Michael Slezak turned Kris’ impromptu cover of Hit Me Baby One More Time into an EW column/poll

I knew there was a reason why I don’t search Slezak’s columnn out that often. Too Mickey Mouse…. M.I.C.K.E.Y

  362. Maybe Slezak just really like Kris’ version and wasn’t thinking about all the other cover versions of the song. He did say as BONUS track for the album…I don’t think it matters if there are a lot of other versions of the song. If it was just a regular track for the album — or another single — then no, it wouldn’t be a good idea. But bonus tracks can be pretty much anything…

  363. Sometimes, I think this whole “fanbase” theory is a little too simplistic. I mean, what is a fanbase after all? There are plenty of people I like on the show, but I don’t buy their music later, because it sucks. So, I was a fan of theirs on AI, maybe i even voted for them. But, I’m not a fan of their music.

I think trying to quantify fanbases is an effort in futility. Most of the people who watch AI are interested only in the tv show – not in the kid’s post-AI music. I suspect many of those people find the music they want to buy elsewhere.

For the Idol alumni, I would guess it goes something like this: (a) They have show fans, who liked them, but may or may not be interested in their music. Those people don’t actively search for AI related info – so they need to get their attention some other way (b) They have a few thousand online fans who regularly visit their fanboards and are aware of when they go to the dentist to get their teeth cleaned. (c) Some show fans who visit the AI sites (like here) and may or may not buy their music.

If they put out a tune that captures the publics interest: everyone in group (b) buys it, because they buy whatever that idol puts out to “support” them. They’ll get a bunch of people from group (c). and, the people who decide whether it’s a hit or not are the buyers from group (a) and members of that big huge public that never watches the show at all, just hears the song and likes it (d).

I’m not sure that any of the theories about who buys a single or cd when are provable, but I’ll concede that first week sales are mainly made up of group (b).

Either way, long-term success (in my opinion) is completely dependent on how many people in group a & d you can turn into buyers. It’s going to take several months to determine if either Kris or Adam are successful at doing that. So, I’m not sure that there’s anything to be gained by analyzing LLWD’s download numbers every which way.

  364. There are too many covers of Hit Me Baby that have already been done. Slezak should know this- why he is trying to get Kris to do yet another cover is beyond me.

Surely he was just kidding although he did put up an article about it. I am stunned though since there has already been so much contraversy over the cover of LLWD>

  365. I know, I linked one of my faves from Travis already

Who is that guy? He has over a million hits! I love Marty Casey’s version myself. He so should have won RS INXS.

  366. Surely he was just kidding although he did put up an article about it. I am stunned though since there has already been so much contraversy over the cover of LLWD>

Slezak makes all kinds of crazy cover requests for the AI kids. He writes for an entertainment magazine. Surely, he is aware that a request like that is not even considered. He’s just posting stuff that he thinks will keep his readers interested. That’s his job. He’s not giving the idols real career advice.

  367. My theory on what is going on with Kris is really simple. The majority of Idol viewers don’t buy music at all (Nielsen research 5/2008). The AI views who buy music mostly buy pop/rock, AC and country music.

In the final vote, voters who buy AC and country music would have voted for Kris, along with the people who prefer soft pop/rock. But LLWD is a alt. pop song. I think the issue is song choice. Which is ironic because Kris was excellent on Idol at choosing songs.

Conclusion: the sales results for LLWD don’t reflect on the size of Kris fans base, just the song and production style. And if his album is more inline with his fans’ musical taste, they’ll buy it.

  368. i’d like to have a BF singing ‘Hit Me Baby’ in the shower ;)

Slezack liked it (and i did like what i heard through the screaming – yes, i’ll say it again… love that guy’s voice) and wrote this thing about a bonus track. I’m not against that but i’d prefer more unheard songs

  369. Cale Mills is HAWT’ ¦I think there may be competition with David Cook and the Anthemic for ‘hottest band’ if there are more hires like this:

On-topic because he IS playing guitar for Kris’ ¦and damn Kris has some pretty friends’ ¦*sigh*

hehe….yeah, he was in the audience with Katy during one of the performance weeks and my sister and i spotted him in a jiffy. wtf, im moving to AR.

  370. I know, I linked one of my faves from Travis already

Who is that guy? He has over a million hits! I love Marty Casey’s version myself. He so should have won RS INXS.

I loved Marty Casey’s version. Is his version on YouTube?

  371. Conclusion: the sales results for LLWD don’t reflect on the size of Kris fans base, just the song and production style. And if his album is more inline with his fans’ musical taste, they’ll buy it.

That makes sense too. But, I’m not sure it has yet had enough radio spins to fully test the theory. Like Kirsten was saying earlier, it’s still selling at a better ratio than its spins. So, I still see a chance that many of Kris’s fans just haven’t heard it yet (or heard it enough to be convinced to buy it). It will be a few more weeks before I’m willing to blame the single choice for anything. (LOL I like to hedge my bets)

  372. Wow this is an awesome day to be a Kris fan. It is great to see him perform LLWD live and all of the new videos! He looks so relaxed and happy. I can’t wait until his album comes out and he starts touring.

  373. Uh-oh

JAMBAJIM I keep getting Tweets: ‘OMG KRIS DOES BRITNEY http://bit.ly/3c2QTk.’ Afraid to click on link. Do Kris Allen & Britney have a sex tape????

    Awesome…

How long till he’s accused of ripping of Travis? lol

Thanks for all the videos, guys!

Is this the first time he’s performed “Live Like We’re Dying” live?

  374. Yeah today at Seton HS gig was the first time he’s performed LLWD live.

BTW, he’s scheduled to go on at the Bosom Ball at 8:15 pm Eastern time…so in about 10 minutes

  375. Q3…I understand what you are saying about opening acts but I don’t think that it holds true for all performers and types of shows. I can understand the small 1000 capacity SRO show that the opener, being a virtual unknown, performs for free but once you have reached the big time and have your own album out, etc. those circumstances become a little bit more iffy.

I am sure that Jordin gets “paid” for opening for the JoBos and Britney. And Kellie isn’t going to continually tour as the opener for Taylor Swift on her dime. Daughtry didn’t tour for free as an opening act nor did David Archuleta with Demi.

I can see if a tour uses local bands or performers as their opener…more a filler while the hustle and bustle of seating occurs that these guys may be doing it for exposure and CD sales, but not a “named” performer that has somewhat national identity. Traveling isn’t cheap, accompanying bands aren’t cheap and I don’t think someone is going to do all of this on their dime.

  376. Conclusion: the sales results for LLWD don’t reflect on the size of Kris fans base, just the song and production style.

The song just went for adds and has been available for purchase for what, three weeks? The song needs time to build an audience-something that just hasn’t happened yet. If sales don’t pick up after another month or two, then it might be time to stick a fork in LLWD.

  377. Woah, my head is spinning after reading all the chatter about LLWD’s sales and airplay! I have a question…how do you explain “TiK ToK” by Ke$ha (which is, in my opinion, a pretty kickass song)? These are the latest Mediabase stats for that song on pop format:

    56 45 KESHA Tik Tok 714 421 293 3.39

Correct me if I’m wrong…honestly I’m not totally sure I’m interpreting the numbers correctly…but she has a smaller audience impression at 3.39m than Kris. And Z100 apparently just added her to their playlist today. She’s a brand new artist and “TiK Tok” is currently #30 overall on iTunes. I know she sang the hook on “Right Round” by Flo Rida, but how many people really realize that and would seek out music by her? (Honestly the first time I heard that song I thought it was Katy Perry, lol.)

  378. BTW, he’s scheduled to go on at the Bosom Ball at 8:15 pm Eastern time’ ¦so in about 10 minutes

Dude, moving to PST has really screwed me up.

It’s so odd watching prime time shows at 5 and 6pm on the east coast feeds, much less trying not to call people too late.

  379. Ok, ROFLMAO

Elle_Higgins LOL one of the main sponsors of the kris allen concert tonight is a sex toy shop!
less than a minute ago from UberTwitter

  380. I guess I’m a little late to chime in on the Oprah speculation but doesn’t it make sense that Adam’s SKYPE appearance on Oprah is a kind of test/audition for him (for her)? I’m sure she’s heard the buzz and/or her staff has certainly kept her in the loop about it — particuarly the responses from their own website. So if (when!) his satellite appearance generates ratings and evokes a lot of response (from the audience and viewers) that’s her cue to feature him on a later show — where he can sing and be interviewed ala Streisand, Michael Buble, et al.

  381. I have a question’ ¦how do you explain ‘TiK ToK’ by Ke$ha

I think the only explanation is that they secretly put digital crack in that song. It’s the silliest song, with an even sillier video … and yet it was instantly in my head and WOULD NOT leave. I couldn’t help myself, I totally bought it, and now it’s right up there at the top of my iTunes heavy rotation along with Adam and Gaga.

  382. Elle_Higgins LOL one of the main sponsors of the kris allen concert tonight is a sex toy shop!

LOL. This is a fundraiser right? In these times, you’ve got to take money from whoever has it. I work with some non-profits and fundraising is a big part of my life these days. One of the groups I work with routinely receives very large checks from the man who here in our area is known as the the Strip Club King. But, that money’s still green and we need it!

  383. Allison looks beautiful! I want that dress haha
ETA: Why is tik tok doing so well?
Cause Adam tweeted about it. Duh

  384. Oh shi—-

    Hit me baby!!!!!! Again!!!!
half a minute ago from UberTwitter

So Kris performed his Britney cover at the actual Bosom Ball?

Also, same tweeter claims Kris did an ACOUSTIC version of To Make You Feel My Love

  385. That sounds great I hope he did that would be neat to hear the whole song. She also said he sang TMYFML also. I hope he did I love that song so much.

  386. So, I was a fan of theirs on AI, maybe i even voted for them. But, I’m not a fan of their music.

Make sense! I was a fan of Daughtry and Cook and love listen to them on the radio, but I don’t buy their song. Ohh..I bought “Permanent”.
But the above argument is exactly why all Idols have to be able to reach out to fans outside the AI buble, because they’re maybe 10x bigger than fans in AI buble.

  387. That sounds great I hope he did that would be neat to hear the whole song. She also said he sang TMYFML also. I hope he did I love that song so much.

MJ opened a new thread with videos from the soundcheck :)

  388. Another tweeter heard from (this is almost like the tour days, waiting for people to tweet)

stephisrandom #I have Baby One More Time on video. Oh. My. God.

  389. OT but,
OMG…watching Flash Forward and they’re talking about “Black Swans”- thought a few of you here would find that a bit interesting lol.

  390. OMG Sunn they are discussing the meaning of “black swan” on Flash Forward – I am totally freaked out now…

  391. Allison looks beautiful. I love the color of her hair, but I think I like it better straight. What a pretty dress!

  392. She looks pretty. I wonder if she had a date?

Heh, good question…probably not, maybe her mother ;)

  393. Allison looks beautiful. I love the color of her hair, but I think I like it better straight. What a pretty dress!

The blue in her hair looks great against the silver of the dress.

  394. I loved Marty Casey’s version. Is his version on YouTube?

Yep. The RSINXS one and a couple different live acoustics.

  395. OMG Sunn they are discussing the meaning of ‘black swan’ on Flash Forward ‘“ I am totally freaked out now’ ¦

Me too. Last week it was Nazis, this week Black Swans, and the first week, that Adam figure. Creepy!

Lots and lots of very cute pics of Kris at his Seton HS appearance today

    http://wkrq.zipscene.com/photos/viewalbum/8822

Thanks for this link, those are adorable. By the look on his face in the viola pics, I don’t think he had picked up a bow in awhile, lol.
Also, Allison looks so pretty in those pictures of her!

I don’t buy this. Any Idol fan base worth their salt buys whatever their Idol puts out whether it’s great, total crap or somewhere in between. They don’t care as long as their Idol’s name is on it.

I don’t think the general population cares about distinctions between alt rock or pop/rock or AC. There are people out there saying “Oh, I can’t buy this because it’s too alt rock.”? I don’t think so. They just listen to it and if they like it, they buy it regardless of classification.

One more totally anecdotal BS theory to throw out there…

The people I played the single for liked it enough that they’re waiting to hear the whole album. In other words, they don’t want to buy the single now if they’re considering buying the album. It was good enough for them to want to hear more, so Kris has to wait for the sale. Whether they buy the album, or end up buying the single later is another thing.

  399. OMG Sunn they are discussing the meaning of ‘black swan’ on Flash Forward ‘“ I am totally freaked out now’ ¦

Me too. Last week it was Nazis, this week Black Swans, and the first week, that Adam figure. Creepy!

Wow – like wow. Now what if the album is called Black Swan?

  400. USA Today (Brian Mansfield) does an indepth interview with David Archuleta regarding his Christmas album…

One of the best things about Christmas From the Heart is that you sing in four different languages — English, Spanish, French and Latin. Which ones do you know a little bit, and which ones did you have to learn phonetically for the songs?

English and Spanish were the only ones I really knew. Sort of. I’m not even good at English! But it was fun getting to sing in all the different languages. It’s fun to reach out to people from different backgrounds and different parts of the world. It’s neat to be able to share and dive into a culture that you’re not familiar with and to get familiar with the language and how the words are said.

    http://content.usatoday.com/communities/idolchatter/post/2009/10/david-archuleta-talks-about-christmas-from-the-heart/1

  401. David Archuleta to speak at women’s conference

Utah’s most famous American Idol will speak about reaching his dreams during the Annual Conference for Women later this month.

David Archuleta will join former first lady Laura Bush, Utah’s first lady Jeanette Herbert and pianist Roger Williams at this year’s conference, which is sponsored by Sen. Orrin Hatch and his wife Elaine.

“I am so pleased that David Archuleta was able to fit this conference into a demanding concert schedule,” Orrin Hatch said. “He is an unbelievable talent and a special performer who has a great story to share.”

The Murray teen will address the morning keynote session on how he “accomplished reaching his dreams, while staying grounded in life.” He was the runner-up during the seventh season of the popular “American Idol” TV show and is currently preparing for a winter concert headlining tour featuring songs from his newly-released Christmas album.

The conference will be held Oct. 26 at Abravanel Hall. To register, call 801-413-9133.

  402. Oh is that just the way Adam describes them or something? I couldn’t read the scanned article, so I was just going by what the post said.

    Oh well, sorry!

    No, it’s not.

  405. MJ – I hope you’re having some fun! Don’t lose too much cash though :)

  406. I guess we’ll rind out about the effectiveness at radio spins driving sales for LLWD soon enough. And this is one time I really hope I am wrong.

So add that to the list along with MJ “betting her house” that I was wrong that Adam would suceed in producing a multi-genre album for his debut (jury is still out on that one, too.) This is the one I really want to be right about!!

Q3: My theory on what is going on with Kris is really simple. The majority of Idol viewers don’t buy music at all (Nielsen research 5/2008). The AI views who buy music mostly buy pop/rock, AC and country music.

I’m a fan who bought LLWD to support Kris. I am an Adam fan who likes and respects Kris. But I think that kind of buying is the exception not the rule because there are not 100,000 Kris fans online at MJ’s.

I think most people buy music they like — and you need more than the committed Kris fanbase to make a hit song, you need to get the casual fans to buy it.

  408. from MTV Buzzworthy

He may have copped the silver medal in the American Idol Olympics, but David Archuleta is certainly a tried-and-true star. How do I know? Well, he has just gone through that great rite of passage that all successful singers eventually go through: he has released a Christmas album.

“Christmas From The Heart” is a nice run through some Christmasy hits (“Silent Night,” “Joy To The World”) as well as his famed take on “Ave Maria.” No videos have been released for the holiday platter as of yet. But let’s take a Christmas gander at a few Christmas music video tropes we’re sure Archuleta will avoid:

  409. Just read the EW article — and all I can say is can I have the album NOW!

Here is another link to a big scan:

    http://pics.livejournal.com/mayonegg/pic/0001xrt7

He recorded 28 songs — just give them all to us.

The Pink/Max Martin song could be the single “What Do You Want from Me”. That also means there are 2 Max Martin tracks!

  410. Jim Cantiello is just as big of a tease as Kris himself…

I am now djing the mtv news party. I am 99% close to playing a top secret kris allen song but I won’t cuz that’s illegal. So deee-lite it is

    TOP SECRET SONG

  411. I put this on the Adam thread but The Pink song is a throwaway track off of her Funhouse album. I have the link in the other thread.

  412. When Daughtry’s first album came out he sold over 300,000 the first week and at that point It’s Not Over barely made a dent in airplay. I’m doubting it wasn’t AI fans who contributed to sales like that with such little airplay. Maybe when Kris’ album comes out we’ll have a more clear picture where his fanbase lies.

  413. I put this on the Adam thread but The Pink song is a throwaway track off of her Funhouse album. I have the link in the other thread.

so it will be angsty – thats her break up album, even though they are no longer broken up

  414. So the Pink song would be a cover? That should remove it from consideration as his 1st single then. Unless Adam wants to deal with the shitstorm that Kris went through with LLWD…

I’m confused did pink release the song anywhere?
Cause unless she did, there would be a lot of pointless peeing going on.

  419. Actually, I don’t think most Adam fans would care. We’ve never hung our hats on some ZOMG!! amazing organic singer/songwriting/arranging skills as the reason we prefer Adam. He has an amazing voice and stage presence. I mean, please, you think we didn’t know about “bendy, bendy, bangy, bangy, lose your mind on all my candy”??

  420. you think we didn’t know about ‘bendy, bendy, bangy, bangy, lose your mind on all my candy’ ??

    LMAO! I like that song :- I

  421. As long as Adam knew it was Pink’s song, and was okay with it, I think it would be fine. I just don’t want any awkward interviews and then have it later revealed that he didn’t know it wasn’t written for him until later. That would shake my confidence in his label.

That too, Adam is a singer, not a singer/song writer. noone ever gave him that distinction.
Also, Unless the song is released for sale, then Pink is nothing but a co-writer. And the song is not a cover. It’s just a Pink/Max Martin song that they bought for Adam.

Added to that, The chance of song called “what do you want from me” being a dancy pop song are next to nothing. So I highly doubt that it will be the first single.

    So yeah, it’s all good.

  423. I am not finding that song, maybee there is a demo of Pink singing it but it’s hard to find since every search for the song leads me to Pink Floyd lol.
I also looked it up if it was released for itunes or in any other country and couldn’t find anything so I wouldn’t consider it a cover, just a throaway song like for instance Miss Independent.

  424. Ok I’m confused with all the peeing. Is there a link somewhere to Pink singing this song? I would love to hear it.

Ok I’m confused with all the peeing. Is there a link somewhere to Pink singing this song? I would love to hear it.

I think it was premature anticipatory peeing. If I’m not mistaken, I think Pfizer might make a drug for that.

So the Pink song would be a cover? That should remove it from consideration as his 1st single then. Unless Adam wants to deal with the shitstorm that Kris went through with LLWD’ ¦

But it would be funny if it was his single.

    I would laugh.

I would pee my pants laughing. lol. But that pink song probably won’t be the single.

I’m confused did pink release the song anywhere?
Cause unless she did, there would be a lot of pointless peeing going on.

Well it does seem more actual demo like, than cover like. In that not released, even as a B side in Germany. So epic lulz thwarted by reality on two counts. Reality is that it probably won’t be the single, second it’s a demo, not a cover.

Oh well, at least mj’s pants are safer now. ;)

  427. Allison looks beautiful. I love the color of her hair, but I think I like it better straight. What a pretty dress!

    ITA

  428. So why are peeps peeing themselves over an Adam song written by Pink? I’m lost but it must be pretty funny.

NVM I saw Zsus posts-sounds about right. But, anyway, the difference between a demo and a cover is what?

Guys- here is the info I found. It was supposed to be on Pink’s Funhouse, but was ‘leftover’ . If you scroll down to the bottom of the page it says it was left for a ‘possible’ B side on a future album.

    http://www.pink-fanclub.com/funhouse-album.html

    So it was not released.

That settles the cover argument. Now let’s see if it actually makes Adam’s album at all.

  430. Greg wells is a self-admitted tease!!!

greg_wells File under “tease” but I can’t wait for people to hear Adam’s record. Starting to hear final mixes today and it’s exciting.

  432. OMG – the “preppy” Dave pix coming from his Myrtle Beach concert are to die for!! I am so thankful to American Idol for giving us David Cook.

  433. Here’s another link for the EW print article. Some people were having issues with the original link. If you click on the picture, it will be large enough to actually read.

OHH! I was SOO hoping the EW.com Adam pics made it into the next print issue! Yea!! And tons new info too! More song titles! More awesomeness involving everything from falsetto to glam-rock – love it!

  434. PreppyDave!

He looked amazing in Charlottesville — black shirt, dressier pants. Then Richmond it was leather jacket, black t-shirt, nice jeans… and he looked fricking amazing. Looks like he was awfully pretty tonight too :) . He’s been looking REALLY good, I think!

  437. I think him and Jim are so drunk. It’s so funny. Am loving Kris more and more all the time. His so darn funny tonight. And Jim tweeted him back so funny. And people on twitter are going nuts about cale or something. There adding his name in with the repleys to Kris.

    Hah!

  440. Love preppy Dave! :) I hated having to miss tonight’s show since MB is really barely an hour away from here but the pics soften the blow a bit. ;)

Cover is actually released on an album, demo is not released. There was some potential ‘urinary incontinence’ threatening to happen but thankfully it’s been averted and everyone’s pants are safe…

  442. Sorry, from what I understood from the OP, there was a Pink version of the song floating around somewhere. So ya all can all stop now.

Honestly, in all the years I’ve been blogging Idol, Season 8 is unparalleled. Sometimes I am literally stunned by the things I read here.

Plus, a reminder: Questioning the motives of and calling out rival fan groups will get your post deleted.

  443. Cause unless she did, there would be a lot of pointless peeing going on.

LOL! If it turns out to be another covergate, at least it wont be swept under the carpet..be rest assured we’ll be discussing it to debuggery!

  448. I like this quote from the David Cook article:

Cook has been touring relentlessly behind his self-titled debut. He won’t be forgotten anytime soon, but he knows he’s got some work to do.

And he’s willing to play his way to – or is that back to? – stardom.

I like the fact that David’s hard work is being noticed by folks around the country. I think that people notice that he is willing to put hard work into his career and that he takes nothing for granted.

  449. oh and Trugs’ tweets to Jim C. are hilarious. Trugs is sick and hopped up on his meds, evidently!

  450. I like the fact that David’s hard work is being noticed by folks around the country. I think that people notice that he is willing to put hard work into his career and that he takes nothing for granted.

David’s work ethic and the joy he obviously gets from touring and performing is one of the things I like him most for, besides his voice of course :)

ETA: plus, he’s easy on the eyes.

  451. I think that article is confirmation that Cook is starting to be equated with the image of a tirelessly touring musician rather than just “that guy from AI,” which is definitely a good thing. There’s a bohemian kind of romance to that nomadic road warrior vibe, you know? Very Kerouac. ~dreamy sigh~

Random fun fact for the night that I just discovered… Cook, Adam, and Mark Salling (the guy who plays Puck on Glee) were all born in 1982. What the hell did they put into the water supply that year? Dayum.

  452. NVM I saw Zsus posts-sounds about right. But, anyway, the difference between a demo and a cover is what?

Demos are songs recorded by a studio singer to be sent to artists in the hopes that they’ll take a liking and will opt to record it. (That’s what Adam’s “Want” was – a demo meant to give artists an idea of the direction a song could take.) Covers are songs recorded by an artist and released as a single, part of an album, a b-side.

BTW, I see you are responding to a post of mine MJ deleted. MJ, I broke no rules with that post, and you know it. If you are going to jump into the fray and get snarky and provoke Adam’s fans, then don’t you think you should get as good as you give? Everything I said was true. Kris was vilified, here (I doubt the rest of the world gave a damn) for having his first single be a cover because his fans had made a huge deal out of him being a songwriter while Adam was not. You can claim, “Questioning fanbases motives!” but, it’s in context. To just say, “Kris got mocked for having a cover as his first single, so Adam should, too” is disingenuous. That’s not how it went down. And you know it. I was never into the whole, “Oh, Kris is supposed to be this singer/SONGWRITER! So, why is his first song a cover?” However, the idea that anyone would be so ridiculous as to think the same argument could apply to Adam, when his fans never went around poking at Kris fans claiming he (Adam) was some sort of superior songwriter, is ridiculous.

  453. Aw, don’t apologize Kris ‘” your tweets are so random, funny and adorable!

  462. @Truthiness

Adam is doing a cover song? Has Pink ever released that song before?

That’s been answered in several posts on the previous 2 pages, it’s not a cover, the sing has not been released.

Yeah, it’s not a cover, this really is a demo and yeah it has been gone over, by mj on this very page a few posts up, that it’s not a cover. I was just making a joke reference to the last page. Sowwy.

  463. Actually, I don’t think most Adam fans would care. We’ve never hung our hats on some ZOMG!! amazing organic singer/songwriting/arranging skills as the reason we prefer Adam. He has an amazing voice and stage presence.

This, this and this! I don ´t understand all the peeing. I also seem to remember that Adam mentioned that his album might have a cover. I guess that after having so many songs written for him, they won ´t need it. But, we (Adam ´s fans) have never attached to Adam the organic singer-songwriter-musician label.

However, it is not a cover since it has not been released:

2008 Pink Funhouse “What Ya Want From Me? (Unreleased Track)”

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Martin_production_discography

ETA: If Adam sings a cover for his album, I am sure he would give credit to the author. He is music savvy enough, and he has always praised the authors of the songs he has sang. He even mentioned the people who helped him with his songs in the AI show. So, he won ´t tell us lies.

  464. So, this is what we have for Adam ´s album so far:

    Strut (Kara Dioguardi/Adam Lambert)
    Winners
    Music Again
    Suburban Decay
What Do You Want From Me? (Pink/Max Martin)
    Loaded Smile (Linda Perry/Adam Lambert)

    Is this it?

  465. I think those are the names we know so far but I guess it’s not 100% sure that they will all end up on the album. Probably will, but we cannot be sure.

Wasn’t a song called Obsession talked about a while ago?

  466. Wasn’t a song called Obsession talked about a while ago?

Oh yes, I had forgotten about that one, but I don ´t remember where it was mentioned.

  467. I am totally confused by the rules on this blog. I thought one of the rules was that you were not to incite fan wars? Am I wrong? Maybe it’s early or perhaps I am just not all that bright…..sigh.

  468. I think Obsession turned out to be a song that the Rascal flats will be doing. It was connected to Aimee and people assumed it was an Adam song but she said it was for the Rascal flats album. If I remember correctly…

  469. Actually, I don’t think most Adam fans would care. We’ve never hung our hats on some ZOMG!! amazing organic singer/songwriting/arranging skills as the reason we prefer Adam. He has an amazing voice and stage presence.

I wouldn’t care but I would think it was funny because it would be the S8 theme. If Adam released a cover it would not be a replica of the original so I wouldn’t care at all. But ngl I would love to hear both versions of the song if possible.

  470. So, this is what we have for Adam ´s album so far:

    Strut (Kara Dioguardi/Adam Lambert)
    Winners
    Music Again
    Suburban Decay
What Do You Want From Me? (Pink/Max Martin)
    Loaded Smile (Linda Perry/Adam Lambert)

I want it now! Loaded Smile is perfect for Adam, that boy can say so much with just a smile.

IdolScott Just rehearsed my original songs w a 50 piece orchestra 4 the concert Sat and it sounded AMAZING! I felt like a kid at Christmas time! lol

I do have to say this is a tenacious group – they are trying to make things happen.

  473. I agree squirrely, they are all trying to get their music out into the world and heard. I wish them ALL much success!!!

  474. Just dropped in to see if there was an Adam “leak”….you guys are sooooo funny…..put a smile on my face as I head off to work….maybe we’ll have better luck later today (heading off to work with my depends on)

  475. However, the idea that anyone would be so ridiculous as to think the same argument could apply to Adam, when his fans never went around poking at Kris fans claiming he (Adam) was some sort of superior songwriter, is ridiculous.

I’m sorry, but anybody who has watched how fanwars form and develop in to Class V hurricanes would not find that ridiculous at all.

    Let’s deconstruct it.

Kris was vilified, here (I doubt the rest of the world gave a damn) for having his first single be a cover because his fans had made a huge deal out of him being a songwriter while Adam was not

Yes he was vilified here for that. Much of it was blow-back at a single OTT fangirl who managed to get press credentials and idiotically released the audio against the rules. There were a few other Kris fans claiming that Kris would write all his songs while Adam would not, but not all of them were. Result: For the last four weeks, there probably hasn’t been a single thread about Kris that doesn’t have somebody posting about how it’s a cover and how tragic it is that Kris is singing covers.

So, now that a few Adam fans have made such a big deal about “a person from a karaoke contest singing a cover”, don’t you think that a few fans from the other camp would return the favour?

Context gets thrown completely out the window in these things. And then suddenly MJ has to get her a$$ busy popping popcorn and we’re all screaming for the drink cart and wondering where Spenser is. And laughing. And we all know what can happen then.

But, it’s all moot. This Pink thing is not a cover. As we’ve all learned in the last month, it’s infinitely better that Pink thought the song sucked so badly that (even though she spent money recording it and money is scarce now that she has to support her Ex) she burnt all the tapes rather than if she had put it on the C-Side of an EP she released in Bhutan (which, mysteriously, half the MJ’s poster had heard played on the radio in high rotation despite it never appearing on Mediabase’s records while another quarter of them had owned and loved the EP for the past year).

And of course, anybody who’d followed the music biz for more than five seconds would know that it’s perfectly normal for somebody to shelf a perfectly good song because it just happened to not fit their current album or there just wasn’t room on the CD or they just wanted some more tinkering time or they just thought it didn’t work with their voice. And some other artist took it and made it the enormous hit that it deserves to be and that it’s NO BIG DEAL just like covers. But, everything in the Idol world is a chance to have a fanwar so the context gets thrown out the window.

Disclaimer: The bit about Pink is just to show how it will get spun. The entire paragraph after explains why the argument is idiotic. I’m in no way trying to start a fanwar or seriously believe the argument. Nor do I spend my time surfing the iTunes store of Bhutan. And I bet this disclaimer gets ignored so I’ll be digging out that asbestos underwear again.

  476. Kristen, I have to agree with mj a few pages back, I think I love you.

I distintively recall a very supportive thread for Kris’s snippet leak and the release of the single. I remember being shocked at how positive the threads were and appreciated the fact that people could possibly not like the song and still wish for success for Kris. It wasn’t 100 % positive because nothing ever is, but I remember most people stated that it didn’t matter if LLWD was a cover. Does anyone else remember how calm and supportive those threads were or is it just me?
I’m sure you’ll argue to the death here and we can expect essays for responses, so does anyone have the links to the original snippet and the first time the whole song was heard?

  478. Well, you know, Adam is not a real musician, as is was vastly explained in this blog. He doesn’t play an instrument, so we adam fans dont have to worry about him singing a cover. He wouldn’t be able to write songs anyway, you know, not enough artistry. But we love him nevertheless. Ah, we adam fans are so shallow! LOL

we are NOT upset but someone higher ranking shouldn’t provoke the fans
first’ ¦.im telling the truth and im not apologize for it’ ¦

    Definition of “blog” from Merriam-Webster:

: a Web site that contains an online personal journal with reflections, comments, and often hyperlinks provided by the writer; also : the contents of such a site

So from that we know it’s a personal journal. We know that MJ is a blogger just from the title of her site ie. MJ’s Big Blog. That intimates to me that she’s allowed an opinion. She often states her opinion. What she does (the best in IMO) is to allow for differing opinions while affording a person with opinions that may differ from the norm to safely state said opinions without fear of herd mentality piling on’s.

What MJ isn’t, I don’t think, is exactly what I think you may expect her to be…a police officer. I’m interested in her opinion as much as I’m interested in any other opinion here. I don’t think she’d still be doing this if all she was is a police officer. That she does what she does so well is a testament to vision of fair play I have to think. I stopped going to Rickey’s (actually never went much) when I wanted to see a video of Joshua and Katy performing to No Air on SYTYCD. Rickey had like 3 performances up but not that one. He pretty much told me he upped the ones he liked.

So, I think MJ gives us everything. She’s not here to change our minds about anything, but that she doesn’t get an opinion just baffles the shit out of me.

  480. I fInd that hard to believe MJ, all I see here is snark upon more snark..nothing too outrageous or out of the ordinary IMO, and well if you dish, you can take’ ¦.that’s blogworld’ ¦all good fun!

Season 5 comes close, but nope, Season 8 is quite unique.

  481. I’m sure you’ll argue to the death here and we can expect essays for responses, so does anyone have the links to the original snippet and the first time the whole song was heard?

    No essays. Here they are:

    Snip Leak:
    535 posts

    First Listen : 661 posts

Believe me, “Covergate” was thoroughly discussed in both.

  482. Wow, I take it back. I thought people were joking, but apparently some were not.

I don’t understand Kirsten’s post. After reading twice I’m thinking it must be extreme sarcasm for effect? But it sounds mad. I’m sorry if I inadvertently played a part in upsetting anybody.

  483. I think trying to quantify fanbases is an effort in futility. Most of the people who watch AI are interested only in the tv show ‘“ not in the kid’s post-AI music. I suspect many of those people find the music they want to buy elsewhere.

And, in fact, most of America just plain doesn’t buy music, does it? Whereas most of America *does* watch television. ….

For at least three-quarters of people, I’d bet that they go through a music-buying “age” — teenage, basically — and at that point they mainly buy whatever their friends are buying but, nevertheless, don’t have a huge amount of money to spend on anything. And then, later, they buy little or no music at all, except maybe the occasional nostalgia album from somebody they bought back when.

Don’t the numbers of songs and albums sold kind of bear this out?

To sell, you need to reach the minority who buy or, if you want big numbers, you have to tap into the young-person’s-fad thing, I expect. And all of that is reaching well beyond the Idol tv-show “fanbase.”

  484. I loved Marty Casey’s version. Is his version on YouTube?

    I don’t know, but it’s on Itunes!

I bought it and continue to really like it — plus, I hope that maybe I shot a penny or two Marty’s way….

I think that’s what it’s meant to be, yes, but I can feel some real frustration there too. As well as in the posts of a lot of people these days. But everything’s as peaceful as it can be I think, and your posts are always very reasonable :)

  486. Kirsten – BRAVO!! Thanks for putting it all in perspective in your post at 8:38!

  487. BTW, I see you are responding to a post of mine MJ deleted. MJ, I broke no rules with that post, and you know it. If you are going to jump into the fray and get snarky and provoke Adam’s fans, then don’t you think you should get as good as you give?

To be honest, I was a little taken aback by the pile on, and how rude and defensive it was.

Some fans have a problem with a little snark directed at their favorites. But then, when the snark is directed at the rival, there’s no end to the loling and the back slapping and the choruses of “don’t ever change!” “OMG You’re on FIRE!” “You’re My HEROOO!” ELEVENTYONE!!!!

So yeah, I’ll agree. It goes both ways.

So I apologize if I’ve offended some of your tender sensibilities. And from now on, I’ll just sit back in my lawn chair with my mai tai and just watch. Popping that popcorn is going to keep me busy enough.

  488. I am one who believes that Kris should not have released a cover as his FIRST single and to not change it up at all was not a good move – but that just my opinion and what’s done is done.

I am a huge Adam fan and this may sound like fangirly stuff but I doubt Adam would do that as his FIRST single but even if he did he would be able to discuss why. The way Kris handled the situation made it look like he was puppet on a string and did what was told no questions asked. ymmv

  489. To be honest, I was a little taken aback by the pile on, and how rude and defensive it was.

imo the number of responses to something deemed offensive to a particular Idol is proportional to how many fans that Idol has on the blog. It’s not like fan groups conspire to all pile on at once when a “provocative” comment is posted… just that those posts get individual responses from a lot of people, and the effect seems like a “pile on” when it has to do with a popular Idol.

  490. Kristen, thanks so much for the links to the snippet discussion and first listen. I checked them out and the first thing I saw was a post by tiger92 talking about what to expect with Allison’s, Kris’s, Danny’s, and Adam’s first single. Allison’s seems pretty dead on for the most part, so much so, I had to chuckle. Maybe I need to read the whole thread, since I didn’t the first time.

Here’s an excerpt about Allison. I hope it’s OK to repost it.:

You won’t hear her rock voice enough. People will wonder (but not with the level of hate that Danny and Adam will receive) what happened to the Janis Joplin vibe. Outside the bubble, it won’t matter. She’s a dynamo, a young Pink, and if the song is catchy, it will be a hit.

  491. ONLY the handful of totally, totally OTT Kris fans who have been commenting for months about Kris’ superior musicality, and who were expecting him to be then next big singer-songwriter ala Jason Mraz and James Morrison should be disappointed. I remember reading one comment that claimed the Kris was the 21st century James Taylor. Maybe someday Kris will be a great singer-songwriter, but Jive will not let him write all of his songs ‘” and very few people could write 12 good songs and put out an album with about 5 weeks to do it.

BTW ‘” there are similar groups of OTT Adam fans who think he will create a new genre of music, or want him to revive classic rock. This will not happen either.

The bottomline: Kris’ single will be a hit and get non-Idol fans attention ‘” and that is what he needs right now.

I just read the last four pages of Snip Leak. This quote is from Q3 because she basically found most of the factual information about the Script’s version. There were people that discussed LLWD being a cover, but after reading I’m still saying people were calm and respectful. The media has written about the fact that LLWD is a Script cover and are continuing to do so. Just yesterday the DJs mentioned it to Kris during his radio interview. While not a huge issue, the fact that Kris’s single is a cover is a fact that is out there.

  492. and your posts are always very reasonable

    Aw, thanks Sherena! *smile*

With all the great stuff happening right now, bunches videos of both the Seton and Bosom Ball performances for Kris, and the interviews and finally some album news about Adam, I’m really hoping people remember all the AWESOME going on this week rather than resurrect the tired old fanwar stuff.

  493. imo the number of responses to something deemed offensive to a particular Idol is proportional to how many fans that Idol has on the blog.

When one person responds, then others follow, often picking up the tone of the original repsonder. That’s my definition of a pile on.
