A week in the life of an ‘American Idol’ finalist

Over 10 years with “American Idol,” vocal coach, pianist and musical director Michael Orland has worked with many unique groups of contestants, but “some things never change from season to season.”

The veteran musical mentor to the aspiring stars laughed Wednesday when he revealed one example.

“No matter what, every year those contestants go out there saying, ‘I’ve got to impress the judges. I’ve got to make them love me.’

An ‘Idol’ Judge Heeds Her Tips

Steven Tyler may operate on a bizarre frequency, and Jimmy Iovine may be the ruthless engine behind the scenes, but no one has kept “American Idol” afloat this year more than Jennifer Lopez.

Early on, in the audition rounds, she was overshadowed by Mr. Tyler’s grammar-bending outbursts. And she hadn’t yet learned not to be sympathetic: crushing dreams is tough work. But now she’s down to business, because more than anyone on “Idol,” except possibly Mr. Iovine, she understands that it is, in fact, a business.

Randy Jackson reveals his pick to win ‘Idol’

Past “American Idols” David Cook and Lee DeWyze better watch their backs — there might be a new “Idol” rock god in the making in the form of James Durbin, at least according to judge Randy Jackson.

“I think he’s got a shot to win it all!” Jackson told Billy Bush and Kit Hoover on Wednesday’s Access Hollywood Live.

“What you look for now is who is just driving and rising to the top,” “Idol’s” Top Dawg continued. “I’m hoping that the public is looking at that going, ‘Hey, this guy is real dude.’

Casey Abrams: The Other Male ‘Idol’ Contestants are Sexier Than Me

Jennifer Lopez may have called Casey Abrams “sexy” but he did not believe it! The latest American Idol castoff stopped by the OK! NYC offices and explained that he is baffled by the idea that he is “sexy.”

“First I was like, ‘you are crazy for saying that,’ ” Casey exclusively told OK! about J. Lo’s compliment, seeming truly dumbfounded. “I’m not like… it’s just weird that out of Stefano [Langone] and Paul [McDonald] and [James] Durbin and all those people, I was called the sexy one. That baffles me and I think it’s kinda wrong.”

I don’t think this was posted (though discussed) in the morning thread- part 2 of the Reality Rocks interview with David Cook: http://new.music.yahoo.com/blogs/realityrocks/422512/david-cook-the-reality-rocks-interview-pt-2/

Paul McDonald tweets from the Rachel Ray green room where he, Stefano Langone and Pia Toscano were waiting to tape a segment for the domestic doyennes’ daytime TV show. I think they were making sandwiches!

This reminded me of all the “Late Night Sandwich” vids from last summer’s tour with fondness. Loved those stupid things.

  • Listening

Sma11ie that was an excellent interview she got David to go into more detail about the record than anyone, love the new info.

Okay I gotta ask this and I don’t want to stir up ill feelings again but was that the interviewer we were talking about in an earlier thread who had showed no interest in David? If she is then man have things changed b/c she sounded totally into him now, she was completely impressed by his actions and achievements. I guess while we weren’t looking she was Cookified.

  • Trina

It cant be said enough. SHUT.UP.RANDY

  • Willis

Every time I see Randy quotes in print it sounds like the words coming from a twelve year old.

  • Chicagolaw

LOL, and then Randy can diss Durbin’s album for not rocking hard enough. Just wait.

  • LK3

LOL Trina and Willis. I couldn’t agree more :D

Paul and Stefano are heading back to LA. They must be getting dizzy with the back and forth flying!

No mention of Pia travelling back with them, so maybe she’s staying put in NYC…

Me and @SLangoneAI10 on the way to the NYC airport. LA soon! http://lockerz.com/s/98747863

    eta: LOL Chicagolaw…that too! ;)

  • sinc

Trina, I agree with you. Randy et al (other judges) have not done their job this year. They have pimped James to the point he can do no wrong. Many times he has been “pitchy”. Not once has any of them critiqued him. But they have to all the others. We know where they are trying to go with all of this.
James definitely has talent but is not “all that” (imo)

  • Kirkee

Good interview. Cook sounds like a classy guy.

And Randy Jackson once again sounds like a clown.

  • desiree_chick

OMG!!! PAUL!!!! PIA!!! STEFANO!!! LOL HAHAHA

Seriously though, I missed them all so much. Was starting to feel miserable without seeing them. Yes, even Paul, who I may have some choice words for his singing…but I miss his backstage tweets and photos! And then to see Stefano looking happy, both with big smiles, yay! LOL.

All the fun people are leaving Idol, and with Casey now gone, it’s good to see parts of the gang again. I can’t wait to see the Rachel Ray segment. :)

Actually, it’s entirely possible that Randy is that stupid. I don’t know what his agenda is here. I’m just saying that Stupid is still on the table.

Yes, listening, it was. Don’t know what happened to LP, but apparently she has seen the light.

Watch Randy jinx James now. Dear God Randy, you must ruin the fun, don’t you? >(

Please, Randy, just go and SIT YOUR ASS DOWN! NOW!

  • Mtlfan

be prepared for Randy’s pimpage of James tonight!
    oh Randy please stfu

  • Mel1

Does it really matter who the judges say is going to win? In S8, they had been talking Adam or Danny for weeks and weeks. All three judges. Even Seacrest.

So, Haley is going to win.

  • suenigma

Eh, I never got the impression that LP didn’t like Cook. Quite the contrary. Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t she a huge stan during his season. She had lofty (unrealistic) expectations for his album coming off of AI, and hated LO. She thought it was going to be hard rock and groundbreaking or something. She then proceeded to foolishly review his album based on one song and felt the righteous wrath of the fans as a result.

Regarding that infamous interview, she wasn’t mean to Cook or anything, she was just caught up in Adamania. I wasn’t mad about it, I was just embarrassed for her and Cook. I thought she came across as very silly, and a poor journalist, but definitely not a nasty person or a Cook hater. JMO

Just watched the David Cook Lyndsey Parker interview. She did a great job and David was as articulate as ever. Loved that he got to set the record straight about being lumped in the same boat with Idol winners who haven’t come close to him in sales.

  • sma11ie

Okay I gotta ask this and I don’t want to stir up ill feelings again but was that the interviewer we were talking about in an earlier thread who had showed no interest in David? If she is then man have things changed b/c she sounded totally into him now, she was completely impressed by his actions and achievements. I guess while we weren’t looking she was Cookified.

Not sure if you’re still around, but I wanted to answer this, based on all the intel I’ve gathered. I didn’t really read Lyndsey Parker’s column during S7, but apparently she was a big Cook fan during the season. Then, when Light On came out I recall a lot of fans were disappointed, or thrown off, or just didn’t like it, and among them, I suppose, was Lyndsey Parker. So I guess she went ahead and decided to write a negative review of David’s entire RECORD, based solely on her dislike of Light On– since she apparently admitted in that article that she hadn’t even heard the whole thing. So fans were upset with her, pretty legitimately, I think. I can’t find that review anymore.

And then summer of 2009, she gave everyone a heads up that she would be interviewing David Cook, finally, and fans were apprehensive and a bit predisposed to find fault with her interview. The interview was fine. Here it is. She only had like 9 minutes with David– he was shooting some Pepsi/Yahoo music thing where they were taping him playing golf. She kind of understandably started off with a bunch of Idol questions, as she was hot off season 8 in June 09. She’s a big fan of S9, and I think Adam especially, but David fans were annoyed that she spent the majority of a 9 minute interview with David talking up Adam and Kris. In actuality, I think she was trying to give David praise and credit for kind of paving the way for what Kris and Adam was able to do on the show, and even said David was like a hybrid of the two. David kind of humbly deflected the praise, and talked up Adam and Kris himself, and the interview ended up taking a lot of time just talking about them. You’ll notice in this new interview, Lyndsey mentions that she’d asked the question before- she brings it up again because she’s trying to praise what David’s done for the show, and she does write a reality blog, so it’s really understandable that she ties stuff back to the show. It wasn’t entirely her fault, really, that with the last interview, they had just started talking about David’s own music when time was pretty much up– granted, she led with the Idol questions. Lyndsey typically does very in-depth interviews with all the Idols and asks good questions, but that time, I think David was maybe distracted because they only had a short time out on that golf course, and had to get back to shooting the Pepsi golf segment. They just had way more time to get into details this time through, and David was just more forthcoming in general.

Oh, I just thought of some other stuff. I think when Lyndsey interviewed Kris when his album came out, she mentioned to Kris that he got the most writing credits ever for an AI winner debut, and Kris himself corrected her that no, David Cook had more, and she seemed surprised, which made fans think that she didn’t know her facts as a purported David Cook fan. I think she also said in an article talking about Adam and Kris’ sales, that David Cook had “quietly sold 1.25 million records“, and some thought that wording was a bit of a diss? Anyway, it seems like fans gave her enough flack for all these “offenses” that she was fully aware of them going into this new interview, lol. Notice she was quick to dispel any media misperceptions on David’s success, and that she volunteered the info that David had broken the record for most cowrites on an AI winner’s debut. Heh, she learned.

  • Keel

Okay, I finally relented and watched the LP interview. I have to say that was very good.

I really liked his answer about getting lumped in with low-selling Idols. He admitted being baffled about it but was not at all defensive, and was actually kind of understanding of how there is that misperception because he’s just not appearing in magazines and TV shows.

I also really enjoyed his answer to LP’s question about opening the doors on Idol to people who weren’t completely in the Pop/Diva Belter box and generally transforming songs. I liked how little credit he gave himself (“maybe I did hit on something”) while giving people in his season a lot of props, and generally gave all the credit to the contestants that followed him (very little to do with me/everything to do with them). Just so genuine.

  • Listening

Sma11ie yep i’m still around, just decided to take a little peek to see what had been added. Thanks everyone For the Lyndsey Parker history and theories.

Thanks for interview. I enjoyed it immensely. I must say that everytime I listen to David, I am so impressed with the way he expresses himself. He is such a lucid, articulate guy with an amazing talent and he is so down to earth and also very admiring of his co-idol compatriots. His new album sounds absolutely fabulous. The songs I have heard are all wonderful and his favourite is THE SNIPPET we all heard on the famous Cook Sends a Sample to all his fans from the studio. I am waiting in anticipation for this album.
