‘Idolatry’: ‘American Idol’ has a new name…’America Hates Talent’

Last call for the Rage and Shame Express! Alexis Grace got booted from American Idol this week — missing a spot on this summer’s Idols Live! tour — while Scott MacIntyre and Michael Sarver keep chugging along, ready to commit acts of mediocrity against the Motown songbook come Wednesday night. It’s enough to make an Idoloonie consider hiding out in a Utah ski lodge from now until late May, ignoring the goings-on on our nation’s favorite talent competition and subsisting on CSI reruns and trashy Judge Alex episodes alone. But then, of course, I’d be missing out on the emotionally devastating fun of speed-dialing the super-talented Allison Iraheta all the way to her inevitable eighth-place season 8 run. And why wouldn’t I want to do that?

I Like To Watch: Idol Worship and Adam Lambert

I hadnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t planned to bother with American Idol this year because, frankly, I never got through the first two-hour episode, much less the subsequent lengthy viewing spectacles. Boring, boring, boring.

Yet as of Tuesday night, I am, and ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s for one reason only: Adam Lambert.

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m watching not because of Adamsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s odd yet skillful reinterpretation of Johnny Cashà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Ring of Fireà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ; his effort was inspirational but confusing, as I half expected him to break into Jefferson Starshipà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“White Rabbità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ at some point (à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“One pill makes you larger/And one pill makes you smallà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ). Simon Cowell may have been right: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“What the hell was that?!à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

Why Idol Adam Lambert Is Brilliant

Think Freddie Mercury as lead singer of the Doors, but in the videos he’s a male Britney Spears. Have I nailed Adam Lambert?!

I’m going to claim some expertise upfront here and tell you I held the very first Idol auditions here in Milwaukee as promotion manager for fox 6 even before Idol was a show. We did them in a barn at state fair, ask Kiss-FM. Then, I went to work for the Fox Network in LA and attened many an Idol taping.

So, this week, Adam Lambert nailed it for many reasons:

Hodges: ‘Idol’ contestants’ faith an important part of their performances

In a recent article, MTV.com highlighted the Christian singers on this season of Fox Network’s “American Idol.” The piece pointed out that a number of the contestants are either worship leaders or have strong affiliations to their church. The story was ridiculed by some for its suggestion that the contestants’ faith will resonate with viewers and affect the final outcome of the show.

Janesville connection to Idol contender

The owners of a Janesville hair salon have good reason to tune into the American Idol television show: they style the hair of one of the remaining contestants, Danny Gokey.

On Wednesday night, Gokey, 28, Milwaukee, advanced to the top 10 on the popular program.

Simon Cowell didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t like what Gokey was wearing, but loved his voice.

Paula Abdul thought he was à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“brilliant.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

Chart Watch Extra: The American Idol Alumni Association

When Kelly Clarkson sold 255,000 copies of All I Ever Wanted in the week that ended Sunday night, she lengthened her lead as the American Idol alumnus who has sold the most albums. This brings her career total to 9,836,000 albums. Still, it’s probably just a matter of time until Carrie Underwood overtakes her. Underwood, the Season 4 champ, has already sold 9,408,000 albums. These two women are the only Idol alums who rank among the top 200 album sellers of the Nielsen/SoundScan era (which began in 1991). Clarkson is #187 on the list. Underwood ranks #198. In all, eight Idol contestants have sold 1 million or more albums so far in their careers. Fifteen have sold 500,000 or more.

Former ‘American Idol’ top finishers bring spring-break tour to Wings Stadium

KALAMAZOO — Since the reality-TV powerhouse “American Idol” took off eight years ago, the focus has been on finding a sole lucky winner.

However, past contestants like Melinda Doolittle and Chikezie Eze would rather talk about the voices that worked just as hard, didn’t make it as far, yet still benefited after the coveted “Idol” spot was filled.

“I think the perfect thing happened,” said Doolittle, the third runner-up to 2007 “Idol” winner Jordin Sparks. “‘American Idol’ is like music boot camp. You have to learn and perform these songs in less than a week and the show helps to remind you very often that there are 30 million people watching every night. Concert Review: David Cook mines new territory in A.C.

ATLANTIC CITY – Bathed in swirling, green light, David Cook might as well have been on the moon. A new place. A new atmosphere.

A new set of fans he’s never met – who all feel like they know him because they welcomed him into their living rooms last spring.

Cook, last season’s “American Idol” champion, rocked to a sold-out Borgata Music Box crowd for more than an hour Friday. While embracing his crown, Cook isn’t letting “Idol” define him, evident by a setlist that included covers and songs he wrote prior to becoming famous.

‘Grease’ returns to S.F. stage, with a cast member chosen ‘American Idol’-style

“Grease” is the word (again). If just reading it, you get chills, they’re multiplying and you’re losing control, it may well be because the reality-TV-spawned revival of “Grease” the musical is sliding its way into San Francisco. ‘Cause the kitsch power it’s supplyin’, it’s electrifyin’!

Since America has been hopelessly devoted to reality TV talent competitions in the tsunami-size wake of “American Idol,” wily producers wasted no time trotting out “Grease: You’re the One That I Want.”

This NBC TV series let viewers vote for their favorites, as legions of peppy hopefuls vied for the lead roles of Sandy Dumbrowski and Danny Zuko à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ roles made famous by Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta in the film à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ in the big-budget Broadway revival. I have to admit I laughed at the Atlantic City review of David Cook. Fans who showed up wearing bunny ears? Hopefully no flat Davids or glitter in sight but home made signs for sure.

I still think the jury is out on where his career is going. Rocker dude or for the ladies. And I think the next single CBTM will just confuse things further since it will def fall in the latter category. And I still don’t see the big crossover to male fans that will really establish him. And it’s not like they haven’t been trying either.

I was at the AC show last night and it wasn’t nearly as weird as the reviewer said LOL I don’t get what he meant by “talking suggestively”. I didn’t pick up on that at all. He’s very charming when he banters and talks to the crowd but its not like he was sexing it up trying to turn on his cougars. Nope no FlatDaves and I didn’t see any glitter, but I’m going tonight again so I’ll be on the lookout :)

I don’t know what the reviewer was seeing but there were lots of male fans there last night FWIW. In fact I had two right in front of me and two in my row (the ones in my row were late teens-early 20′s) and were really into the show from what I could tell. It was one hell of a kickass show. Since this is the headlines thread I’m refraining from fangirling too much :laugh_tb:

I don’t think he’s implying that Adam might be transgendered. I DO think he’s saying that JOURNALISTS like him should not jump to conclusions about someone’s sexuality and should wait until the person themselves clarify it – if they ever do.

I really appreciate him saying that too. Because when it comes to one’s sexuality, it’s not as black and white as people might assume. It’s many shades of gray.

the “them” are the voters…so hopefully Fan Support can rally behind these deserving contestants. I’m hoping that Alexis’ fans will move over to Allison. That young girl really deserves some nice loving from the AI viewers. But, I always get nervous about gal rockers. Just doesn’t seem to be a genre’ that is supported by AI’s demographics.

There’s no question or debate about it for me. Cook’s fanbase is primarily composed of middle-aged housewives. The typical idol fan. The same types that supported Clay and Taylor. They’re Cook fans, and now they’re supporting Gokey (primarily).

And as for his career, he’s just a second rate Daughtry as far as I’m concerned. Weaker stage presence, weaker voice, and weaker material. He deserved the win, but I just don’t see him reaching Carrie-Duaghtry-Kelly status. Just doesn’t have the chops all round.

  • Allen

I love that the Idolatry producers seem to still be as annoyed at Jesse’s departure as I am. :) (And Felicia, Mishavonna and Rickey).

They need to do not quite as quick edits though, particularly when they have subtitles up. Its almost impossible to read some of them without going back and pausing (which is kind of problematic on a flash player).

Theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re Cook fans, and now theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re supporting Gokey (primarily).

  • gingerly

I’m a Cook fan. I don’t like Gokey or Taylor or Clay. I can’t stand Daughtry’s goaty vibrato either. So, although you may think you have it figured all out, bjesgirl, you haven’t. In addition, there’s lots of rocker dudes that ladies swoon over. I don’t think the two things are mutually exclusive.

It’s hard to know if David will be truly successful a la Kelly or Carrie or even Daughtry. And it depends on what you classify as successful. If selling over 1 million of your debut record is not considered successful in this day and age I don’t know what is. Will he be a household name? Who knows? A lot of it depends on what happens with the next single, which has created some controversy. I think David and his band have the potential to be big, but I don’t know if that is what David wants.

Regarding the age of his audience I don’t know about that? I saw him in Tallahassee at my college show and there were lots of students and males there so….shrug. I can only go by what I saw at my show.

I have been watching the YTube videos from the rest of his tour and he is starting to seem a little worn out. When I saw him at school at the first show of the tour and in subsequent YTube vids he seemed to have that fire, passion, tension that attracts me to a live act. He seems to be going through the motions in the last month or so. You see a spark of it here and there but not like before. Maybe it’s just me. Something has changed and I don’t know what it is. I hope he figures it out.

Somewhere Trent Reznor just… did whatever Trent Reznor would do that is suitably evil if he read that an American Idol contestant was being compared to himself (I don’t know what Trent generally does, but I’m sure it’s on the evil side). Seriously, Adam is nothing, nothing, NOTHING like NIN. He’s kind of David Bowie/ Ziggy Stardust with some Studio 54 spectacle thrown in. And he’s fast becoming more overrated than Gokey ever was.

  • Trina

I don’t know one, not a single fan who is supporting Danny. I’m sure there are plenty but “primarily” – try again. In fact the fans I know can’t stand him. The ones I know are mostly supporting Adam or Anoop.

I had dinner with a group of Cook fans last night who range from 23-32, myself being the oldest. We all have careers and aren’t “housewives” so unless you go to every concert or survey every fan board you don’t know everything about fanbases. The college shows where you have to have a student ID to purchase tickets and/or student ID to get in the show have sold out and some sold out rather quickly. Guess colleges are flooded with middle age housewives!

Yeah, both are very popular at the moment, but the question is can they grow their popularity in votes as time goes on, and after its all over can they stand up to the hype in the real world.

I’m thinking Danny has a better shot that Adam at gaining votes as he continues. But I don’t know if either of them will go all the way, because they both could wear thin after a while.

I think Adam, while in no way “original” outside the show, has a better shot at a long term career. He is good and he can stand out in the marketplace. I just don’t see Idol letting him make the type of record that would work best for him if they sign him.

Ok…not all Cook fans are Gokeys, or Cougars. Anyway who knows what kind of a rising star Cook has in store. He is just beginning. Right now everything looks good for him. I don’t agree about CBTM attracting a certain fanbase, if it is his big breakout song, it will send him into a whole new level. As far as his voice, compared to Daughtry, I know that it is all in the eye of the beholder, but Cook to me has an incredible voice, while Daughtry’s voice is just meh,as far as Daughtry’s songs they are very rock lite, I mean they are almost rock free. I like them though.

  • Tess

Since we are talking about David C and Adam this thread I would like to interject a brief comment. I have rewatched the videos of Adam’s Ring of Fire and David’s Billie Jean, both times turning down the sound. I’ll give you the fact that Adam’s persona is more dramatic than David’s, but to me the videos are pretty similar. Same basic body language, same basic hold on the mike and stand, same basic facial expressions, same basic eyes (and the eye makeup is about the same).

Proves to me that people don’t always judge similarly. That no matter how much a contestant tries people will always have their “preconceived” prejudices or attitudes toward a contestant. And, I find it amusing that so many people have commented on Adams dancing and OTT antics on this song. Geesh, he never moved from the mike stand!

By the way, for the record, both of these performances are top notch!

  • Mia

IMHO, the declaration of stupendous success or abject failure for any artist who has put out his first big label record less than 6 months ago are a bit premature.

All I can say is that David Cook has the work ethic, intelligence, groundedness and drive to do well. I think he has the talent and charisma to do better than well. However, anything can happen. Being his fan, I am happy for every small victory and every little milestone crossed. He is living a dream. While it lasts, I am going to enjoy living it vicariously with him.

  • bjesgirl

Oh, he has always been more overrated than Gokey.

Yep. The Bowie and Mercury comparisons are also ridiculous. Just because someone feels like hitting every note he can and has a flamoyant stage persona doesn’t make them the next Mercury. It just makes them over the top, and bordering on annoying.

donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know one, not a single fan who is supporting Danny. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m sure there are plenty but à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“primarilyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ – try again. In fact the fans I know canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t stand him. The ones I know are mostly supporting Adam or Anoop.

You must have misunderstood me. I didn’t mean thall all Cook fans were flocking to Gokey. I meant that the demographic that makes up the majority of Cook’s fanbase (middle-aged women) are also the primary demographic that is supporting Gokey. Better?

I had dinner with a group of Cook fans last night who range from 23-32, myself being the oldest. We all have careers and arenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“housewivesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ so unless you go to every concert or survey every fan board you donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know everything about fanbases. Guess colleges are flooded with middle age housewives!

OBVIOUSLY I have not been to every concert, or watched every video, or interview or whatevia. I’m refering to the fact that as a college student, most of the folks I know could give two shits about idol. So I would have to wonder exactly where Cook got all these supposed young fans from. He certainly hasn’t had a pop hit to ensure the support from a younger demographic. And trust me… college kids will see anything for 10 bucks- doesn’t make them fans. Even if they have a good time doesn’t mean they’ll run off and buy his album. They may get it on limewire, though.

And I still stick to my statement about the middle-aged housewives thing. They may not be housewives, but some of these ladies sure have a lot of time to stalk these idols across the country…

  • minzhi

I love Idolatry. Pretty much agree with them. Looking forward to it every week.

And yes, I’m also a David Cook fan. He’s my favourite American Idol contestant so far. I do like Daughtry, but there is no comparison at all. Their music don’t even sound alike. But if you ask me, I definitely love David’s music more. I just hate the fact that RCA is choosing songs not penned by David to release as singles.

And also like the other DC fans pointed out, Danny Gokey fans are a minority in the DC fanbase. I in fact really dislike Danny. He so needs to go. The over-pimping for him disgusts me, but what is disturbing is most people are buying it. Just look at the statistics on dialidol, and how Danny is way ahead than the rest. I’m sorry but Danny is just an average singer.

  • tinawina

I think Kris is dark horse material too sorta, but I don’t think his voice is dynamic enough to win. Like I can see him getting closer than anyone thinks he will, but taking the whole thing? Hmmmm….

Allison has the voice but hasn’t connected enough yet. Lil is very R&B and I don’t know if she has enough charisma to get past the boys. Perhaps Matt can pull it out.

It’s a little early in David Cook’s career to consider him as nothing but a wanna-be. He’s just starting out. No one knows how his future will unfold. I don’t even know if mega-stardom is something he wants. He loves the smaller, more intimate shows. As long as he can get his music out to the people who want it, he’ll be happy, methinks.

It’s been interesting watching his tour via tubeys. Lots of younger girls (of course, because of the student only concerts), but there have been LOTS of men in the audiences, more than I would have thought. Someone who was at last nights Atlantic City casino concert said that the audience was probably 40% male.

His assumed demographic is kind of media driven, and trotted out when someone (media or whatever) feels the need to denigrate him. Although I think all AI performers start out with that basic demo. That’s why his college tour is so smart – he’s attempting to broaden that fanbase, not just performing concerts for already established fans – he’s trying to gain new ones.

I still don’t understand the constant comparisons to Daughtry. Is it an AI thing? Not a Daughtry fan by any means, but I never feel the need to put them down just because I like David Cook.

    ETA: Well said Mia.

Ack editing again: Found this on DCO. Possible songwriting credits for Souvenir. Glad I don’t have to eat my hat. I KNEW Dave wrote this!

I LOVE Kristin from Idolatry. I agree with everything she says, including her assessment of frontrunners Danny and Adam. Danny has little charm and Adam is a repeat of AI4 for me. While Con’s fans touted his Berkelee conservatory/superior vocal technique and that his theatrical vocal quality was indisputable, I couldn’t get past the smarm.

Oh, the revisionist history of DAUGHTRY. I haven’t been to a Cook concert but I can attest to a DAUGHTRY one. My cousin persuaded my sister and me to attend a DAUGHTRY concert late May 2007 of his first mini-tour. He played a 50 minute set to a crowd of mostly women over 30. At 21, I felt like I was one of the younger ones. The set was really short, he cracked a smile a few times and there was no banter, only a shout out to the city a couple of times. He’s not the most compelling performer beyond a 3-4 song set.

Listen unless something really weird happens the next few weeks on idol IMO it still comes down to Danny and Adam. With Adam winning because everyone else left hates Danny and will vote for Adam. And then for the next year I will have to hear that Adam is the next best thing since sliced bread and I’ll have to hear him screech and stick his tongue out at me on all my favorite TV shows. the End..

  • Natasha

I don’t agree with Slezak. He thinks Allison, Kris and Anoop are talented and they are. But to say that Danny, Adam, Scott and Michael aren’t talented? I don’t know if you can go that far. A lot of this is subjective and at this stage everyone has at least some talent.

I really dislike Danny and I can’t figure out the voting juggernaut that seems to be behind him. Right now, it looks like he’s a shoe-in to win. My best guess is that TPTB overdid it with his back story and now they’ve created a monster.

I was pretty sad and a little angry to see Alexis go before Michael and Scott but apparently America saw it differently. Just because I don’t agree doesn’t mean Michael and Scott aren’t talented. Sorry Slezak.

    Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a little early in David Cookà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s career to consider him as nothing but a wanna-be.

I don’t think so, Cook comes across as a pretty level headed guy, a good guy, and has throughout his entire Idol run, in my opinion. But I’ve always felt that he was more of a wanna-be rocker than somebody like Micheal Johns was, this despite Simon Cowell calling Johns exactly that (and I think he did that very much for a reason) on the show. I’m not even sure that Cook “wants to be” a rocker, if that is truly what this debut album is, but he knew that it was a niche that he could exploit to his advantage on Idol.

On the Last Call for the Rage and Shame Express: I’ve 12-stepped the rage over Ms Grace’s untimely ousting over the last couple of days but still think it is a crying shame that somebody as good as Alexis didn’t make the tour with this crop of generally mediocre singers left in this thing.

  • Valentin432

Nobody is saying Adam is the next Mercury or Bowie, but it’s the kind of performers he reminds people of.

As far as I am concerned not even Kelly Clarkson who is the most popular of all AI contestants has come close to the dimension of these two.

  • Trina

Oh I don’t know, isn’t it possible he has young fans because they watched him on AI every week? The teen fans *I* know became fans that way so I can’t even buy into the notion that college kids “dont give a shit about Idol”. This is my last word on the subject but one of THE biggest groupies is 21 years old. Just sayin’.

  • hardkandy

I think David and his band have the potential to be big, but I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know if that is what David wants.

I’m pretty sure that’s what he wants.

Things can change, but Danny is in a very strong position. Much stronger than David Archuleta ever was. In retrospect, it should have been fairly obvious that when Michael, Carly, and Jason went out last season, that a lot of their support was going to be redirected to David Cook.

But, Danny is already out in front and whether people like it or not, he is likely to benefit at least somewhat from the now-beaten-to-death “Christian concentration” among the finalists. He will attract some of his co-religionist contestants’ support as they drop from the competition.

It was amusing in the beginning to mock him for the dead-wife-pimping, but in reality I don’t think that was ever fair. He wasn’t the one producing and editing those clips and segments. And I highly doubt it was his idea or that of his guests in the audience for one of them to hold up a picture of the wife either after he performed. I’d say he himself has been exploited a lot more than he has been an exploiter.

Anyway, he’d be a decent winner. The most interesting contestants as musical artists were both in the bottom three this week because they lack a Y chromosome (yep, I’m still saying it) and one of them was eliminated. After them, Matt Giraud would probably make the best music, but he probably doesn’t have a chance either.

  • erennick

All I know is that my 10 and eight-year-olds and their friends are big fans of David Cook. My nieces and nephews in their early twenties are also big fans, so I’d say the assumption that his fan base is primarily middle-aged housewives is just that.

  • frogcooke

Noctem… I’m gonna agree with you about the danny thing, even though im not a fan of his. The wife thing is as much to do with producing the show as anything else is. Idol looks for those things and uses them for their purposes. THey use them to make things interesting and create better back stories and etc etc. Alot of how contestants are viewed and come across has a LOT to do with how idol edits things.. They can show or not show things as they want.

Much like David’s vocal paralysis.. he didnt initially say anything about it until one of the idol people asked him about his heavy/gaspy breathing… and then the rest you know… lol

  • elisad

David Cook is having a sold out all over the place college tour. As a college student, I would say his fanbase is primarily housewives, cause all my classmates are married women. BTW, Anoop FTW~

Heh. That’s pretty much how I felt, minus the Y-chromosone thing. Marketability aside, I think Allison has the most interesting voice, and Alexis was the contestant with the most room to grow artistically as well as performance wise. So it was a bad sign for me when both were in the bottom, indicating both were likely not to make it very deep. Then Alexis went home. Adam will still be there to entertain me but I do not have high hopes for a good album with him. The rest have various degrees of money making capabilities (of who’s left, I think Megan and Matt are the most pop-ready) but I’m not personally excited by them. Neither is quite there vocally (Megan has no control and Matt oversings and loses control) so for me this season is shaping up to be one big pile of meh.

  • weareallinnocent

ROFLOL at Cook fans primarily backing Put the Go in Gokey. ROFLMAO at Cook fans primarily being middle aged housewives.

LOLOLOLOL someone should hit the comedy circuit. Not up to Slezak level, but funny just the same. ;-)

I was convinced earlier in the season that Danny had this in the bag, but I’m not so sure he’s going to pick up a lot of fans along the way. I would think that Kris, Matt and Anoop are more likely to be splitting votes. I think this thing is probably Adam’s if he wants it, but it’s hard to tell whether he actually wants to win.

For all the talk about the dark horses being Kris or Matt, Anoop was second in phone votes this week according to DI (and likely had many more texters than Danny). This was after Matt got the pimp spot and the judges told him he outsang Danny. Hell, Anoop was in 5th or 6th place after Beat It. If he ever gets any judges’ support in his favor beyond “oh, you can sing” and “that was better than last week,” he could stick around a long while, too. I have a feeling that the judges will continue to pimp Matt and Kris though. I just hope Anoop can outlast Sanjaya (7th place?)

I’m sure that AI is hoping that the winner this year is a huge success. The good thing with S6 and S7 is that the winner is still the most successful from their bunch so that’s always good for bragging rights. But I’m pretty sure what AI/19M wants/needs is another Carrie/Kelly-like success (Numerous #1 hit singles! Multi-Platinum Albums!). Something they haven’t had since S4 and the recent ones that came close to that level of “success” are not even winners – Daughtry and (arguably) Jennifer Hudson. But personally, I don’t think that’ll ever happen again.

  • tinawina

Great point. I think Anoop would have to pull out another great performance to be a true contender, but of all the people competing, he probably scores the highest on charisma. He is also a true amateur. I am iffy on his ability to go all the way just because I don’t hear the kind of range and power in his voice like the type that usually takes it all. But Anoop and Allison would be the two I would personally most enjoy seeing win this thing.

Yeah, I don’t think Idol is exactly what you would consider as “cool” during those years. My cousin is in college and when we asked her if she watches Idol, she rolled her eyes and said something like it’s just for losers. I guess I’m a loser but that’s ok. :lol_tb: Same thing with stuff like Hannah Montana and the Jonas Brothers. While kids go apesh*t over that, once they reach a certain age, it’s not “cool” anymore.

What Anoop had it going for him is that he fits the image that Idol has never had before – the Chris Brown/Ne-Yo type. Idol should really go for those personas that they never had before and not try to find yet another blonde country singer, female pop/rocker, male rocker, etc. They should be looking for those that they don’t have yet (for the winners) – male country singer, singer/songwriter type, young male R&B type, etc.

I don’t agree with that. I’ll be hugely disappointed if Danny wins but if America votes for him that’s that.

Slezak should take a tranquilizer. This isn’t about lack of talent it’s just about preferences. People have different tastes. Sometimes you agree and sometimes you don’t.

I actually thought what she said was for the most part true: just trade “middle aged housewives” for “adult women” and it’s pretty accurate. I think Idol viewership starts dropping off in the teen years and stays low all through college, then picks up again the more people start having jobs and their lives settle into routines where they are home watching TV on Tuesday night. At as always, it skews female. So at around the mid twenties and up, you get more and more adult women watching idol. No surprises there. Every popular male from the show has women from their late 20s & up as the biggest part of their fanbase, unless they have big tweener appeal a la Archie.

I think this might be why the producers were all about keeping Anoop, who actually has a college following. It might be also why they are so excited about Adam.

ETA: I don’t think the part about Cook not having a shot at bigger success was accurate, but I thought the assessment of his fanbase was pretty true, if overstated a bit.

Thank you. At least one other person that agrees that it was never fair to come down on Danny for something he did not foresee that would happen. And yes, I agree that he would be a decent winner. We have seen by now that not always those who have the best voices or ability, or even training, win. Taylor won, in spite of not being as good as others., in the opinion of many. David Cook won, and he himself said that he felt Syesha should have won. Danny has that “something” that appeals to people. He puts all of himself in his performances, and that is what primarily made him appealing to me. It is a bonus that he is a person of faith and person who is about family, things which I admire in a man, too.

Oh I can see that he evokes images of certain performers such as Bowie/Stardust, Freddie, Meatloaf– anybody from that 70s-influenced school of theatrical rock. And I could even go along with a comparison to an undemonic stage version of Marilyn Manson.

What I objected to forcefully was the NIN comparison. Stylistically and especially musically, he has NADA in common with Reznor.

I will say that “Ring of Fire” was an entertaining performance. “Black Or White” was comically overhyped, but I liked what he did this week.

But, he has GOT to lose that “crying face” thing he does when he holds a note that looks like he’s trying to depict the “tragedy” half of the comedy/ tragedy drama masks. When he does that it makes me wish that the guy from the Apollo Theatre would come out and and yank him offstage with his cane.

BTW: May be a little defensive, but really actually curious. Why are peeps so impatiently sure that, when his debut album’s been out a mere 4 months, S7′s winner will never succeed like someone who won 8 years ago and 4 years ago? Are we really saying that you only get a few months to be a breakout superstar, and then you’re not one (despite platinum album sales in that time) and can never hope to be? Wow, tough crowd if that’s true.

ETA: Personally, I fear a little for Gokey if he wins. I’m no fan, so take that into account, but I really do believe that if he wins, AI will eventually treat him like Taylor Hicks 2.0. I really do. Largely, I see a Gokey win as predicated on something other than commercial viability — similar to Hicks, with inferior vocal ability. Not trying to stir the pot, far from it. I think AI should treat all its winners respectfully and fairly, but from the weekly Hick’s joke and criticisms, I fear for the next Taylor Hicks-type winner.

I think that’s the type he’d LIKE to be, but is he? As much as I like him I’m having a really hard time visualizing him as a pop star. I’m just not sure he has quite enough “it” factor … yet. And while I know he loves R&B, I’m not hearing it in his performances as much as I am some of the others. I’m hoping I just haven’t picked up on it yet.

Maybe we’ll see some serious soul this week and he’ll prove me wrong. Because what I’ve seen so far is fun and entertaining, but not yet authentic (as always, YMMV). He’s likable, but is he a star?

College student here, and I wouldn’t count us all out just yet. Obviously I can only attest to the opinions of myself and the students I know, but I’m not only a huge David Cook fan, but a fan of Idol in general, as are many of my friends. My roommate and I never miss an episode. That’s not to say that there are none of us who think AI is the lamest thing that ever lamed, but for the most part, I wouldn’t be too quick to generalize. Like any other demographic, there’s a ton of variation. :smile_wp:

While I can’t entirely agree with the first part of your statement, Natasha (I never warmed to Alexis. I thought she was a second rate white soul-wannabe), I do agree with the second part. I wouldn’t pay $50 to listen to Alexis’s second-rate Aretha imitations. But I would pay to listen to Scott’s adult-contemporary interpretations.

However, nothing is going to stop me from joining Slezak in our power-voting-for-Allison routine, Wednesday night. Just lemme get a few votes in for Scott, OK Mike?

Well if it helps I don’t think it matters outside of discussion purposes. We are a tiny little sliver of fandom and despite our various confidently stated opinions, history has proven time and time again that we influence precisely nothing in the real world. LOL. If the AI internet community ruled the planet, Taylor Hicks, Bo Bice, and Blake Lewis would be huge stars. I still remember all the disappointment and “poor girl”s that followed the leak of Jordin’s “Tatto”. LOL. All we are good for is opening week sales and concert ticket purchases, and even then that only goes so far.

That said, Cook has plenty of time left to make his mark. He’s not even done releasing singles from this album. No worries, time will tell all.

Good help me but I agree with you. I LOVE Anoop but I don’t know if he’s really a viable contemporary R&B artist. I really can’t figure out where he fits, because while he sings well and is certainly entertaining, he seems a tad to… corny, maybe?… to be a pop star. His voice not all that dynamic to me. I can’t quite explain what I mean. Its like he has no edge or something I guess.

Since we are talking about David C and Adam this thread I would like to interject a brief comment. I have rewatched the videos of Adamà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Ring of Fire and Davidà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Billie Jean, both times turning down the sound. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll give you the fact that Adamà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s persona is more dramatic than Davidà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s, but to me the videos are pretty similar. Same basic body language, same basic hold on the mike and stand, same basic facial expressions, same basic eyes (and the eye makeup is about the same).

Proves to me that people donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t always judge similarly. That no matter how much a contestant tries people will always have their à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“preconceivedà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ prejudices or attitudes toward a contestant. And, I find it amusing that so many people have commented on Adams dancing and OTT antics on this song. Geesh, he never moved from the mike stand!

By the way, for the record, both of these performances are top notch!

Thank you for pointing all of this out! I’ve been arguing pretty much the same thing. While I don’t recall David wearing any eye-liner when he performed “Billie Jean” on Idol (he did on tour, however), I thought the way he handled the microphone, etc., was similar to what Adam did this week. I’ve watched Adam’s performance several times, and somebody really needs to tell me where he made all these supposed “sexual” moves. He stood at the microphone, touched his side once (with his shirt going up slightly–not sure if that was intentional or not), and used his hands throughout the performance (his feet were pretty much stationary). Personally, I found Cook a lot sexier, but they were both riveting performances and stood out by a mile IMHO from anything else we saw on those nights.

We have seen by now that not always those who have the best voices or ability, or even training, win. Taylor won, in spite of not being as good as others., in the opinion of many. It is a bonus that he is a person of faith and person who is about family, things which I admire in a man, too.

David has been quoted as saying he thought Syesha (and Carly?) had the most vocal talent of the S7 contestants, but I don’t recall him ever saying Syesha should have won the whole thing.

Danny reminds me a LOT of Taylor–both in how he vocalizes and the way he moves on stage. I really can’t imagine what type of album he would make that would be any more successful than Taylor’s.

    Anoop definitely has the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ factor. His voice is phenomenal and his charisma is magnetic. Watch his You Tube videos, like à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Kiss Kissà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (Chris Brown), à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Sexy Loveà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (Ne-Yo), and à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Because of Youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (Ne-Yo), to name a few. Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the real deal.

Yeah, he is very charismatic and he can certainly sing, but his niche seems more James Ingram than Ne-Yo/Chris Brown to me. LOL. I lurves Anoop though.

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve watched Adamà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s performance several times, and somebody really needs to tell me where he made all these supposed à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“sexualà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ moves.

Wow, really? That dude’s whole vibe is sex to me. Not that its a bad thing. But even the way he sang the song, the phrasing, the little moans in the way he held the notes… it was all very sexual. He just has that kind of aura on stage. Didn’t he even rub himself at one point? YMMV and all.

  • BootStar

But, he has GOT to lose that à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“crying faceà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ thing he does when he holds a note that looks like heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s trying to depict the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“tragedyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ half of the comedy/ tragedy drama masks. When he does that it makes me wish that the guy from the Apollo Theater would come out and and yank him offstage with his cane.

A lot of people hated Cook’s “money note sex face” (TM somebody at TWoP, I think), but it never bothered me. Adam’s faces don’t bother me either. A lot of rockers make weird faces. A lot of singers, in general, look weird when they hit high notes. I’d rather somebody looked weird and hit the note than looked sweet and missed it (or didn’t even attempt it). YMMV, of course.

  • Garnetstar

Bootstar I agree that performance wise there was nothing that different from the David and Adam performance. The only difference was in vocal delivery.

I think that there was a lot of sexual innuendo in Adam’s version of Ring Of Fire. And this could be a totally valid interpretation on his part but in the past the burning ring of fire was sung more as a metaphor about love and being in love and what love makes you feel and all that. IMO.

And the way Adam sang the song it seemed to be more about the physical side of love. And I am not judging his interpretation. I am just offering that up as to why other people might have seen his performance as sexual even though he really didn’t do anything performance wise (unless you call eye-raping the camera) sexual. Anoop in my estimation didn’t even deserve to be a finalist, especially considering some of those who didn’t make it out of the semi-finals and even the stages before that. (Jamar Rodgers is more interesting than any of these people).

It’s like Anoop’s concept of what’s cool and current is from fifteen years ago (including his hairstyle). I suspect if he wasn’t on AI, he’d be entertaining at UNC frat parties and making sorority girls go crazy with his rendition of “Baby Got Back”….

  • Natasha

Adam comes off as much more sexual than Cook not because he’s trying but just because he is. Adam is very sexual and I agree he just has that aura. He can’t help it and it’s going to be some job to dial all that back but I think he can do it.

  • unidentified

Danny reminds me of the Verizon Wireless man in them commercials “can you hear me now?” Just in looks, never heard the Verizon dude sing.

Adam, well if he’s on my TV, I’m gonna look. He’s just so WTF! Not sure how either one would do on the radio. I like Allison the best so far. But she’s so low on dial idol, she’s got no chance unless she really picks up soon.

I agree with you, tinawina, in that it’s probably the niche that’s problematic to me. I don’t watch all the youtube stuff (I spend too much time here as it is) but I’m happy to hear that you’ve seen the “it” from him, QCloud. I’m still waiting … but that kind of goes for most of the contestants this season, actually.

There’s no denying that Anoop has charisma. So far, I just tend to feel it more when he’s speaking than when he’s singing. Having said that, I loved his performance this past week and was really happy that he nailed the song. Let’s hope he continues to do so. This could be a good week for him.

  • BootStar

Yeah, yeah, I get that Adam’s overal performance was very sexual (as were, I’d argue, several of Cook’s last season). My point was just that I didn’t think Adam did anything physically gratuitous, i.e., I don’t think he crossed any imaginary line about what is and isn’t acceptable on the Idol stage.

“Ring of Fire” is all about sexual longing and desire. Adam’s singing made that abundantly clear. I just didn’t see where anything else in his performance embellished on this. Yet I’ve read all kinds of crazy descriptions of things he supposedly did to himself and/or the mic stand.

Maybe I watched a different performance! (Or maybe he is a damn fine story-teller when he sings.)

Cook, like any male coming off Idol is always going to have a lot of older female fans and for whatever reason, some reviewers like to fixate on that for the purpose of a story. However, I’m pretty sure he’s attracting a lot of new young fans including guys. I’m always surprised at the number of Utube videos of guys trying to play Time of My Life, Light On or some other song from Cook’s pre-idol days. His songs may not have made a splash in the beginning but they are proving to have longevity. I would be surprised if he didn’t gain momentum during this year. BTW I see no evidence of Cook fans supporting Danny Gokey. Most seem to like Adam, which makes more sense to me as both Cook and Adam have a very current style whereas Gokey does not.

  • kimberann

I think David Cook will soar past Kelly and Carrie’s numbers at some point. They have been doing this longer than he has. He seems to be getting rave reviews on his tour and gaining new fans left and right. I don’t see anyone from this season capturing America like he did. His music moves me to tears. He puts his heart into each lyric and then we go buy it and listen to it and it becomes a part of our soul. He is so inspiring.

Sorry Julianne and Chuck aren’t my pick on DWTS. :razz_wp:

  • teenie

Wow, there is sure the need this season for the constant posting of various you tube links with comments that they prove that Adam can sing or that Anoop has edge. I mean, I appreciate the you tubes and have every season, but the fan wanking “This proves that…” is really noticable to me. I’m expecting any day now a you tube link of Matt playing piano in a bar with a preface that states, “Look. This proves that Matt can really play the piano well, even before idol.” I think Slezak is right that there is no chance for someone like Allison or Alexis to advance far. The frontrunners’ fan bases are intense and we haven’t seen the top 10 performances yet. I do think that Danny is vulnerable and that Adam is the hyped out, foregone conclusion and will win.

  • http://absinthedreamers.blogspot.com/ Starrlight

Not all Cook fans are Danny fans. Chalk me up as female and 40 who’d rather eat nails than vote Hokey Gokey.

  • Jolene

I’m a huge David Cook fan (duh!) and I’m 22 years old. Many of my friends from the different DC boards are my age or close to it. I don’t mind it when people say his fanbase is largely older females because it’s true for most Idol contestants, since that’s Idol’s main demographic. I just don’t like it when people use it out of context, attaching various reasons and implications to it to diminish his success and/or prospects. From what I can tell, DC is gaining new fans left and right, and the college tour does play a part in that (and IMHO was a very smart, strategic move).

About Gokey – I simply don’t get it. I don’t get his lead in votes, I don’t get why TPTB are backing him. He’s truly Taylor Hicks (marketability-wise) with a lot less talent and charm. It really can’t be coincidental that he raises such negative vibes in so many people – he’s positively despised throughout cyberspace. I don’t believe that he can win this – he’ll have a very large populance actively voting against him if he makes it to the finale. I’m still waiting for the other shoe to drop and for TPTB to start de-pimping him in favor of the real TCO (Who might be Adam, but I don’t think so).

BTW – If that wasn’t clear – another DC fan who hates Hokey Gokey. Generalizations often don’t work and this isn’t an exception.

  • noctem seizure

Bootstar I agree that performance wise there was nothing that different from the David and Adam performance. The only difference was in vocal delivery.

Ooh, I don’t agree with this, unless we completely separate the stage mannerisms out from the place the performer is coming from….

Cook, while what he was doing was by no means original within the world of music, was honestly coming from a place of bonafied frontman angst. What Adam does is a dramatic caricature. It’s a stage act. He’s not a “rocker”. He plays one.

  • Layla

    Bjesgirl:

Thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s no question or debate about it for me. Cookà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s fanbase is primarily composed of middle-aged housewives. The typical idol fan. The same types that supported Clay and Taylor. Theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re Cook fans, and now theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re supporting Gokey (primarily).

uh …where do you know this from? I am a career woman who is a wife with two teen daughters, who loves music….and I CANNOT STAND Clay, Taylor and Gokey.

…and rocker dudes still get the ladies….no matter the age.

  • bean99

Oh, the revisionist history of DAUGHTRY. I havenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t been to a Cook concert but I can attest to a DAUGHTRY one. My cousin persuaded my sister and me to attend a DAUGHTRY concert late May 2007 of his first mini-tour. He played a 50 minute set to a crowd of mostly women over 30. At 21, I felt like I was one of the younger ones.

Maybe it depends where you are because I saw Daughtry twice in Dallas and both times there was a mixed crowd with plenty of guys and the majority were 20′s and 30′s although I’m older. I remember during the season there were people who said most of his fans were teens which was probably supposed to be an insult. :laugh_tb:

I’d love to see Anoop and Allison to go a long way although I also like Danny and Matt.

  • Layla

Slezak is funny even if I don’t always agree with him and I get a kick out of his idoltry videos-wouldn’t miss ‘em. His girly crushin’ on Kris I just don’t get. Perhaps his issue with Adam is that “gay-jealousy” kickin” in maybe?

  • tinawina

lefty, you and I are sisters in Anoop love/regretful skepticism. Here’s hoping the boy proves us both wrong!

Cook, while what he was doing was by no means original within the world of music, was honestly coming from a place of bonafied frontman angst. What Adam does is a dramatic caricature. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a stage act. Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not a à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“rockerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ . He plays one.

noctem, I do agree that both Cook and Adam were originals in the context of the show, but not the real world. And I do concur that while some of Cook’s performances were sexually-tinged, for the most part what he projects most naturally is angst and maybe longing, but not the angry kind, the romantic kind.

Where we disagree is that I don’t think Adam is an act. I really think that is what comes out of him naturally when he starts singing. Even in the YouTube videos he gravitates towards the OTT glam thing. When they show him just standing there singing, he still comes across as intense to me, and he still oozes freaky sex. Heh. I’m not a huge fan of his, but I don’t think the boy can stop himself form being that way on stage.

  • Jolene

Bootstar I agree that performance wise there was nothing that different from the David and Adam performance. The only difference was in vocal delivery.

I disagree with this. IMHO there were worlds of difference in delivery and approace, not merely on the vocal level. Billie Jean was all about the angst and anger, the aftermath, it was sexual in a very subtle way (as, I would argue, most of Cook’s performances were). His was more of a simmer than an open flame.

Adam, OTOH, is very OTT in every aspect, including his sexuality. That’s part of his charm, really – nothing subdued about him. The moans, the self touching (even if it was just a hint, it was more than you tend to see on Idol), the hand reaching for the camera.

Both David and Adam were very sexy IMHO, but in totally different ways, and the performances and overall vibe were very different as well. I don’t think it was just the vocals at all.

  • Paula

(Danny) heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s positively despised throughout cyberspace. I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t believe that he can win this.

Just a small percentage of people that vote are on the Internet. Danny has a huge fanbase or he wouldn’t have gotten so many votes each week. I much prefer him to win than somebody that sex with a mic.

  • Natasha

Yet Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve read all kinds of crazy descriptions of things he supposedly did to himself and/or the mic stand.

I’m on the west coast and from the descriptions coming in from the live feed in the east I thought he was having sex on the stage or something. I was surprised when I saw he just stood there. I thought he’d be gyrating at the very least.

I thought it was much sexier than anything Cook did – and I mean that as a compliment. I’m not trying to put him down.

Former American Idol Kicks off First of Two E. Idaho Concerts (KPVI news 6)

Friday, Utah native and former American Idol contestant, David Archuleta kicks off his first of two east Idaho concerts.

Throngs of screaming David Archuleta fans lined up at the Civic Auditorium, trying to get the best seats to see their favorite American Idol castoff. The very first people in line traveled half way across the world from Japan, to Idaho Falls.

I posted that article in today’s headlines thread.

  • tinawina

The discussion of sexual auras of male AI contestants is making me laugh. Ok, here’s my breakdown:

Cook: He’s the ultimate romantic boyfriend – all funny masculine beer drinking dude to the rest of the world, but will hold you close and sing you pretty songs and get all sensitive and teary eyed on you when no one is around. He will try to be all attentive and stuff in bed, even if he doesn’t quite know what the hell he is doing. And he will pout and write sad songs if you leave him. He might even drunk dial you a few times post breakup. Scratch the might. He WILL drunk dial you. And your friends will all be mad at you for dumping him. But you just couldn’t take all the crying at Mandy Moore movies anymore.

Adam: He’s the guy you meet at the club who eye-f*cks you from across the room. He makes you uncomfortable but you can’t stop staring back. 12 hours later, you wake up in a strange apartment next to a whip, a vat of butter, 2 guinea pigs and a python wondering “what the hell just happened?”. You start to remember when you see that girl you barely know from math class stumbling out of the bathroom. Adam rolls over and sees you, and you are hit with a shock of extreeme shame and totally horniness. You are relieved when he doesn’t call you again. But kinda pissed.

Gokey: He seemed toolish the first time you met him. He kept talking about Jesus and Flyleaf. But after a while he seemed kinda funny, and was always making everybody laugh with the goofy dancing and the silly jokes. One day he gets you over to his house for a “praise workshop” but you’re the only one there. You notice all the pictures of a woman, and when you ask that’s when he reveals he’s a widow. 3 hours later he’s told you so many stories about his happy life with this wonderful girl you start feeling all Meg Ryan to his Tom Hanks in between all your tears. Next thing you know there’s a sympathy hug, then a sympathy kiss, and faster than you can say “Jesus Takes the Wheel” you are buck naked getting to know him in a very non-biblical way. Needless to say you shortly realize that you are about the 3,057th girl this has worked on in the past year. You dump him quick, and much like with Adam you are relieved when he doesn’t call you again.

David Archuleta: You see him sing, think he’s cute and try to slip him your number. He giggles profusely and stutters, then tries to color your bare arms in with a sharpie. You take the paper back.

Jason Castro: After your third attempt to wake him up, you finally succeed and get him to talk to you for a little bit. He seems into you, which is pretty nice. He whips out the guitar and sings you a ditty he wrote. You have no idea what he’s singing becasue all you see are the baby blues. But you do make out the words “sweet” and “baby” sung multiple times. By the time you go to the kitchen to grab him a snack, he’s asleep again.

    LOL. Anyone got any more?

  • frogcooke

oohhhhh DUH…. How I missed it im not sure…. HAHA anyways.. ignore my post then.

Here’s what I mean. I’m not saying that Adam gets in his room, washes off his makeup, and starts blasting the Wu Tang Clan or something. I think his over-the-top stage persona is probably there when he performs his original music, just as it is at one of his theater shows or on Idol. So in that respect he is being himself.

But, I mean it’s an act in the sense that he’s equally concerned about the visual as he is the auditory. He’s very aware that his performances are truly a show and he’s all about that. But, I do NOT believe this is true of Cook.

Everything that Cook does on stage I could see him doing in a dive bar a year and a half ago with eighteen people watching him. In fact, if this dive bar had extremely poor lighting and the band thought nobody could see them, but unbeknownst to them somebody had a camera with an extremely good illumination feature and this somebody recorded the performance and put it on Youtube, what we would see was the same mic stand grip, the same eyes-closed and scrunch-faced glory notes, the same everything.

Now I’m not trying to make too much of David Cook. He’s just mimicking all the other singers he watched when he first started playing the local scene, going to Lollapalooza, and watching 120 Minutes on MTV.

However, my point is that for David Cook, the “stage moves” are a thoroughly natural byproduct of his performance. But, for Adam Lambert the stage moves are a thoroughly calculated and intentional component of his performance.

  • Jolene

But you just couldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t take all the crying at Mandy Moore movies anymore.

    LMAO. tinawina, that was awesome.

ETA: ITA with your last post, Noctem. I think it’s also only natural that Adam is more of a “showman”, as his main occupation has been musical theater. It doesn’t mean one is better or worse than the other, simply a matter of different performance styles.

  • frogcooke

    Tina!!! hahahahaha

Ok Noctem, I get you now. I think that’s pretty accurate.

frog and jolene.. thanks for the feedback, but you have to write one too! I need some assistance here. lol

  • BootStar

Okay, that was weird. I was just watching my DVR recording of Friday Night Lights, and I thought I caught an actress I recognized from a soap I used to watch. So I rewound the commercial a few times. Still not sure if it was that actress, but while I was in slo-mo, I thought I caught Brooke White! And, sure enough, somebody else thought they spotted her too.

Do you know about this, MJ? It was a commercial for DSW shoes. I can’t find the reference on Brooke’s MySpace page.

  • ptslittlecomment

David Cook has said that his performances on the show started becoming more effective when he learned to take the advice of the person who told him not to look at the camera, but to look through the camera. I think this would constitute learned behavior which he willingly employed. I agree that Adam is using moves on stage that he has rehearsed, but I also think that is the mark of a good performer. I think Elvis used his pelvis thrust and lip curl, just as the Beatles and Michael Jackson and Bruce Springsteen and every other artist who plays to the crowd uses what they know will get a certain response. The trick is to rehearse the look or move to the point so that it looks spontaneous. That, if anything, is the point that Adam needs to work on in his presentation. When he performs he needs to not think about doing it, but to do it.

  • chewsday

I’m enjoying this today! Thanks, everyone. As someone who doesn’t care one way or the other about all but one of this group (I despise Lambert’s OTT persona and performances), it’s fun to see what everyone else is talking/arguing about. I’ll have to keep watching the show in order to keep up with the conversation here. (I’ll just turn the volume off and go into another room during one performance.)

    First I heard about it…

  • Garnetstar

tinawina LOL. Loved it. Although just a slight disagreement with your assessment of Cook. I always found his performances strangely sensual. Strange because when he is not performing he does seem like a dorkey, word nerdy guy, beer drinking dude. Arm pit farts and all. But when he performs he seems very in command and knowing. Like your annoying frat boy friend that you make out with one night and holy shit he can kiss like nobodies business and he knows what he is doing. How did I not know that? And he’s a moody son of a bitch too boot. But I do agree that he would drunk dial. For realz.

ETA: I do agree that David grew as a performer on Idol. It seemed organic. Maybe this will happen with some of the contestants this year. We still have awhile to go.

  • frogcooke

Tina, Im not writing one.. HAHA Im no good at that.

Though you probably should of added in for archie.

That was freakin funny…loved it! Got anymore?

ETA: Have dated both types (DC and Adam) and you are not too far off Tina! LOL

  • Sydia

Adam stirring excitement among idol followers is a no brainer, but I would be surprised if the masses would embrace him. He is Liza Minnelli 2009.

  • Llamakhan

I’m 18 and in college, and I love Cook. I voted for him more than any other contestant. Not all of his fans are older women, and even if they are, what’s wrong with that? At least they have been buying his music. Light On is played at the gym at my school all the time, and the students love Heroes beimg used for the NCAA tournament. GO ZAGS!

  • tinawina

Like your annoying frat boy friend that you make out with one night and holy shit he can kiss like nobodies business and he knows what he is doing. How did I not know that?

Heh. You know I can see that being true. All sneaking up on you and stuff. That’s the dangerous kind right there. The one you didn’t see coming.

Though you probably should of added in for archie.
à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹He giggles profusely and stutters, then tries to color your bare arms in with a sharpie after comparing you to a flavor of ice cream or an italian pizza.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹

OMG frog he really does that? LOL. How about “after comparing you to a flavor of ice cream or an italian pizza and singing every word you say back to you in the form of a Kanye song”. LMAO.

layla, I’ll try to to think of some more. Who’s left that’s not married? Anoop?

  • AnoopFan

I just hope Anoop can outlast Sanjaya (7th place?)

    That WILL happen, easily!

He is also a true amateur. I am iffy on his ability to go all the way just because I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t hear the kind of range and power in his voice like the type that usually takes it all

Maybe weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll see some serious soul this week and heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll prove me wrong. Because what Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve seen so far is fun and entertaining, but not yet authentic (as always, YMMV). Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s likable, but is he a star?

How I would love to see Anoop prove me wrong.

HE HASNT SHOWN OFF HIS WHOLE VOICE JUST YET….You havent seen ALL of Anoop just yet. He hasnt shown all what he can do. :)

    Anoop definitely has the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ factor. His voice is phenomenal and his charisma is magnetic. Watch his You Tube videos, like à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Kiss Kissà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (Chris Brown), à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Sexy Loveà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (Ne-Yo), and à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Because of Youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (Ne-Yo), to name a few. Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the real deal.

    THIS!

Anoop in my estimation didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t even deserve to be a finalist, especially considering some of those who didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t make it out of the semi-finals and even the stages before that. (Jamar Rodgers is more interesting than any of these people).
Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s like Anoopà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s concept of whatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s cool and current is from fifteen years ago (including his hairstyle). I suspect if he wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t on AI, heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d be entertaining at UNC frat parties and making sorority girls go crazy with his rendition of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Baby Got Backà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.

    WOW, I disagree completley

hahahaha tina. Keeping your love locked down, your love locked down YOU LOSE. haha

Well he uses ice cream and pizza analogies for dating… HAHA Its kinda funny..

I think he has a food obsession… even though he’s gone on a kinda of restrictive diet while he’s been on tour. lol

The discussion of sexual auras of male AI contestants is making me laugh. Ok, hereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s my breakdown:

Two words for your post: sold out! That was the greatest post in the history of American Idol message boards. Thanks to your post, there are now nineteen other very miserable posts sitting on this message board. I just want to take your post, hang it on my rear view mirror, and squish its head. Your post could sing, er write, er be written in the phonebook. I’m going to go out on a limb and predict that we’ll see your post in the finals.

(No, seriously that was awesome. Here’s my commentary:)

    Cook:

Yeah, seriously, I still like the guy, but I’ve decided he’s a just a bitch! And not “bitch” as in the derogatory term that is used for a female– I mean he’s a bitch in the way only a guy can be a bitch! Because only a guy who is a bitch would vocalize the lyrics to CBTM. And the damning lines don’t include the one where he channels Patrick Swayze. But, any guy who would actually say “Take your time, I won’t go anywhere,” and “I’ll leave your things right where you left them, I will wait for you,”– yep, BITCH!

    Adam:

Wouldn’t the guinea pigs be eaten by the python? And how old are these girls if they know each other from math class and what are they doing in a club, much less one that would be frequented by Adam Lambert?

    Gokey:

First, Christian band or not, don’t hate on Flyleaf. I like them. Second, I have thought before that it will be hilarious if groupie stories start coming out about him, this summer if not before.

    David Archuleta and Jason Castro:

    Noting to add. Priceless.

  • frogcooke

    LOL noctem! hahahaha

  • tinawina

    :lol_tb: :lol_tb: :lol_tb: OMG Noctem, I cant stop laughing!

    In response:

Cook: Yes, he is a bitch. There is no other way to put it. Even when he tires to diss a girl like in “Kiss On The Neck” he still ends up her bitch by the end of the song. Oh, Cookie. ***shakes head***

Adam: Who said these were girls? My Adam post could work for either male or female. And the man doesn’t have to be gay either. Dude’s all “gonna have you naked by the end of this song” a la Timberlake, only he can really make it happen. Such is the power of Glambert.

  • jpfan

    Can I play:

Cook – Not my thing dawg and never has been. I don’t see the appeal at all.

Adam – gay not there’s anything wrong with that. Although I think the fan girls are hoping and praying for bi. But if they can convince themselves Clay was straight, who knows what they’ll come up with Adam

Gokey – I don’t hate him but I think he’s quite unattractive to the point it’ll hurt him on the show.

Kris = one of the very rare actual good looking guys who’s ever been on this show.

    I guess it’s officially spring.

  • May

    But, any guy who would actually say à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Take your time, I wonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t go anywhere,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll leave your things right where you left them, I will wait for you,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ yep, BITCH!

:laugh_tb: In some ways it’s worse than the magic rainbows line because at least everyone knows that Cook didn’t have a choice with that one!

  • Natasha

    Tina – Hilarious!!

I’d say you’re pretty close. My thoughts: Overall best boyfriend? Cook. Best in the sack? Adam. He’s got to be a wild ride. The encounter you want to erase from your mind and never hear mention of again? Danny. A real brain bleacher. Bwahaha.

  • jpfan

The fantasies fans project on these guys is pretty funny. And often so far from the reality it’s hilarious. But then almost all the guys on the show function as imaginary boyfriends. Which maybe is one reason why the females off the show have done so much better in the “real world” than the guys.

  • noctem seizure

Adam: Who said these were girls? My Adam post could work for either male or female. And the man doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have to be gay either. Such is the power of Glambert.

Well, going by your original transcript, there was at least one girl, the one stumbling out of the bathroom. But, you’re right, the “you” in the post could have been a guy. I was just assuming that the “you” was actually you. Not that I think you still have math class. Or discovered you are aroused by large Amazonian reptiles. Or rodents. Or oversized dairy containers. Not that I would judge….

And I wasn’t suggesting that the evidently underage paramours of Mr. Lambert in this scenario wouldn’t be at a gay club, as if that’s necessarily the only type of venue where he would be. I just was wondering how they would have come to be at or be able to get into ANY freaky-ass club that Adam Lambert would patronize!

  • oceana

Garnetstar, I think you got it right:

Although just a slight disagreement with your assessment of Cook. I always found his performances strangely sensual. Strange because when he is not performing he does seem like a dorkey, word nerdy guy, beer drinking dude. Arm pit farts and all. But when he performs he seems very in command and knowing. Like your annoying frat boy friend that you make out with one night and holy shit he can kiss like nobodies business and he knows what he is doing. How did I not know that? And heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a moody son of a bitch too boot. But I do agree that he would drunk dial. For realz.

This is how I see him too. Clark Kent/Superman kind of thing. I think he’s not such a nerd, it’s an act. LOL.

I agree with a lot of the stuff that Michael and Kristin mentioned but not everything. I do agree that Danny and Lil need to be careful. IMHO, there are people in the competition that are better singers than these two are (Adam, Anoop, Alison) and/or are more charismatic and likeable than they are (Anoop, Matt and Kris), so they both definitely might not end up winning or getting as far as the producers would like them to get this season.

I honestly don’t think that Danny or Lil are going to win this year, unless everyone else just bombs the rest of their peformances.

If either Adam, and/or Anoop, or Matt are consistantly good, and have some really awesome performances, they could outlast Lil or Danny and/or win instead of Lil or Danny. Lil and Danny need to pick good song choices and sing well, and that will carry them as far as they can go, but I don’t think that it will carry either of them to the title.

I think that even if Danny and Lil sing consistantly well and other people like Adam, Anoop and Matt G. are doing the same thing, Adam, Anoop and Matt could all outlast Danny and Lil, because IMO, these three guys are either more charismatic, and/or better singers and more enertaining than Danny and Lil are.

I kind of disagree with Michael and Kristin about Michael Sarver. I definitely don’t think that he is the best singer in the competition, but I think that he gets a little more flack than he deserves. He’s better than Scott and Megan are IMO and I hope that he outlasts them both. I want Scott and Megan to be the next two to go.

I think that Allison is a decent singer but I don’t think that she is going to win unless everyone else does poorly from here on out and she ends up developing a huge fanbase. She was one of the better singers this past week, but still ended up in the bottom three. I don’t think that her chances of winning are high.

I think that Adam, Anoop and or Matt Giraud have a good chance of winning, it just really depends on how consistant they are and how well they perform in the next several weeks. Adam could definitely win it but he is a bit polarizing, so he could fall short of the title.

Anoop could win it, but he has to be consistant, and he has to perform well at least most of the time, from here on out. He can’t really afford any more peformances like “Beat It” or even “My Pregorative” if he wants to win.

He’s going to have to bring it just about every week. He might can have another off week, but it has to be after he’s had a few decent weeks consistantly in order for him to have a high chance of winning.

Matt needs to keep stepping it up each week, and if the other two guys fall short he could maybe win this year.

I don’t think that Scott, Michael or Megan are going to win. I think that Kris might go farther than expected, but I don’t think that he is going to win either.

  • BootStar

tinawina, that was the funniest thing I’ve read in a long time!

MJ, I wish I knew how to transfer a recording to the computer, but I’m clueless. Maybe somebody else recorded Friday Night Lights last night?

Speaking of FNL, does anybody else think of David Cook when they see Landrey? There’s just something about him that reminds me so much of Cook or at least how I imagine he was in high school. Friday Night Lights: The best show on television that nobody watches (with commercials featuring Brooke White).

  • Dr. Tracey

It was a commercial for DSW shoes.

I saw that commercial the other night and I also thought it was Brooke.
I wasn’t taping though so i’ve been waiting to see it again.

  • http://myspace.com/saltwatercures pj

^^^Trust me. I watch. I must have missed the commercial. I tend to zone out during them.

I never thought of the Cook/Landry connection. I’m thinking its a stretch, but if I stretch hard enough, maybe. LOL. :-)

  • leome

    LOL Tinawina, that was priceless

  • JOJOSIE

I think Kris is a nice looking cute guy but I see guys like that all the time. I haven’t seen any spark in him yet. I rarely see a guy like Adam. He’s tall, dark and gorgeous. When he smiles his eyes twinkle and then he can give the dark lear. He’s like a chameleon, in that he can look and act so dark and sexy and then be the gracious polite respectful young man that I think he truly is. If I had my choice of which Idol I’d like to spend the day with, it would be Adam. Shopping, theatre, clubs and I bet he know lots of good restaurants, and I feel he’s a good listener as I’ve noticed he looks at everyone who talks to him. You’d think with all this rambling, that I’m a fan. Well I am.

Those who don’t take Taylor Hicks seriously.
Those who still pull up their skirts in disgust at the way he abandoned his AI persona. – which is laughable, considering that his new album is his AI persona personified..heh
Those who don’t “get” Taylor Hicks.

The money is in touring, not radio and not how many CD’s sold. Adam is the only one on the show who could put on a stage show that I would pay money to see. Although Anoop, Kris and Matt seem like nice guys, they are a dime a dozen and will probably never be heard from again. Gokey, I don’t even want to think about. He makes me throw up in my mouth.
Adam comes across in all his interviews as just a really nice guy, sweet, kind and sincere. Beyonce said she uses the “Sasha Fierce” character when she goes on stage, because her on stage persona is not who she really is. As far as I can tell the same goes for Adam.
Comparing Constantine to Adam is so wrong, Con was a creep, that unwashed slime ball person on stage was who he is, Adam is not anything like that.
I have no idea what will happen on the show, but I sincerely feel like we are watching a star being born with Adam Lambert

edit: just edited a bunch of rude stuff out of your post. read my guidelines. follow them please.

  • BootStar

Maybe because Landry is the singer in a band and has posters of Our Lady Peace in his garageà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

  • Jolene

Hereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the DSW commercial! Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Brooke White all right!

I’m amazed you even noticed her there. She’s like an extra as far as visibility goes… If I wasn’t looking specifically for her, I would’ve missed her completely.

She is a pretty girl with a fresh look, so hopefully this direction will pay up if she’s persuing it.

  • Qcloud9

I hesitated to mention Anoop’s You Tube videos, because I’m torn between “sharing it and keeping it my little secret” & just letting him surprise everyone each week! LOL, I know it’s an open secret, since I’m not the only one who knows how to You Tube! Anoop intrigued me so I looked him up & I was immediately hooked. I’m so excited to see Anoop perform every week & show all the viewers his many talents.

  • weareallinnocent

LOL at everyone! These posts were a GREAT read. :-)

tinawina, you are HI-larious. noctem too, and I always enjoy your posts.

I totally agree that Adam is more naturally, and perhaps overtly sexual. But Cook was sex on stage too, what with the body pump he was forever doing when singing, along with caressing the mic. Gah! The comparison of Billie Jean and Ring of Fire is interesting, I’ll have to go back and do that too. They didn’t strike me as similar, based on recall, but who knows. I totally get what you’re saying though.

In the realm of similarity though, I distinctly recall that Cook often bucked the stylists who told him you don’t dress for the song. And, does anyone remember the screencap of the recap of his Hungry Like The Wolf performance, where he crouched down as he sang? I swear, makeup, hair, leather jacket and crouch, dude did look just like a wolf! (Sadly that was rehearsal and he did not repeat during performance.)

So, the style, staging, practiced performance was there for them both. Adam may not yet let you look in his eyes directly to his soul yet, like Cook seemed to do in his later performances, but he may get there. Or, he may not. I hope he does.

  • Dr. Tracey

—-” I just hope Anoop can outlast Sanjaya (7th place?)”

That remains to be seen but what I don’t understand is why Sanjaya? I’ve seen the comparisons made before and imo the two are nothing alike except maybe in the fact that they are not white Americans. Anoop seems to me to be in a whole different league to Sanjaya Malawhatever.

Also i’m a David Cook fan who’s ‘middle-aged’, female and has a family but you couldn’t pay me to vote for Gokey, not on your life!
    I also don’t think he’ll win.

I dare any male poster to pop into this thread and write an evening with the girls of AI. Thanks Tinawina for the initial post and for everyone who has contributed to a great Saturday afternoon. Not to get serious or anything but it is good to note that even with all the heated discussions it seems that everyone really understands that this is a great haven for internet friends that have something real “fun and interesting and non-earth shattering” to talk about.

Just for the record…if and when I find out that Adam may be available and interested…I dubs to be first in line. But then, just the fantasy was enough to satisfy me for a while. And it is nice to have some eye candy on Tuesday or Wednesday nights to liven up an otherwise same old, same old evening.

I do want to say this…about Idol sales and Idol “stardom”. I don’t think it is really fair to compare Kelly’s early success, or Carrie’s or Chris’s, with what the Davids faced this year. First Kelly was “the first” and got sales not just from Idol watchers but from the curious who wanted to know what this show was about. Also, I don’t think Itunes (if not around yet, or in its infancy) had much impact so in order to hear someone you had to buy their full CD. Then with Carrie she entered virgin Idol territory and had the same impact as Kelly as did Chris with his entry into the “rock” scene. Now the Davids are facing a thoroughly different situation. Itunes and the purchasing of single songs is the norm, album sales have dropped to virtually nothing, and the economy has fully tanked. I find it laughable that anyone thinks they can compare anyones journey from seven or even 4 years ago to what the present Idols have to face. We can more easily identify Idol failures than Idol successes, and it won’t be until the show itself leaves the air that we can see who survives without it.

  • bean99

I completely agree that Anoop and Sanjaya are nothing alike, Dr. Tracey. Now that Anoop’s fans have been scared into protecting him after he was originally voted out, I think he could be around for a while.

I don’t really find DC or Adam to be the least bit sexy. I can see that Adam is overtly trying to project a sexuality but it’s kind of corny to me. The only idol I’ve ever put into the fantasy boyfriend role was Michael John. Now him I find sexy, especially when singing IAWBIAR.

The teen fans *I* know became fans that way so I canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t even buy into the notion that college kids à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“dont give a shit about Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ .

Actually, what bjesgirl said is true: college kids really donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t give a shit about Idol. They may have watched it (with their family) when they were in high school or junior high, but when they get to college, Idol is LAME.

Damnit. I wish that my 20-year old co-worker had known that before she and her friends scarfed up 4 DC tickets. Maybe I could have talked her into letting me buy them.

Loved this thread today. As far as this boys and their sexiness. I think Adam is an exhibitionist. so you would have to be ready for the camera with him…Cook , he tries to keep his sensuality low key, but I can bet that boy is very hawt blooded. Anyway…back to lurking.

    BootStar Mar 21st, 2009 at 3:37 pm

Danny reminds me a LOT of Taylorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’both in how he vocalizes and the way he moves on stage. I really canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t imagine what type of album he would make that would be any more successful than Taylorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s.

BootStar, I agree about the similarities between Danny and Taylor. I think that’s why Simon has reservations about the hype, but I imagine the market they have planned for Danny is Christian Contemporary Music. I don’t know why they haven’t marketed Jordin Sparks for CCM, especially given her connection to Michael W. Smith.

Like Taylor, Danny has two big advantages in the contest:

    1. Based on his frontrunner status on Dial Idol, he seems to be picking up plenty of votes from “casual viewers” — those who watch AI regularly, perhaps buy albums and tour tickets, but don’t obsess on the internet like we do.

    2. Danny is in a much better position than his perceived competitors Lil and Adam to attract votes from the fan bases of contestants eliminated before him. His soulful pop voice and, yes, his tragic backstory make Danny the logical second or third favorite of Michael’s fans, Scott’s fans, Kris’s fans, Matt’s fans, maybe Anoop’s fans and Lil’s fans.

As much as I would like Adam to win, he is the polarizing type of contestant the audience either loves or hates — and most AI fans have probably made up their minds about him already. I can think of only one way Adam can expand his voting base and change viewers’ minds as the competition progresses — and that is to perform so phenomenally that he develops irresistible momentum.

  • hypertwink

Landry = David Cook. Please no. Of all the characters in FNL, there were two I hated – Lyla and Landry. Ugh.

Anyway, of all the guys in AI, the only ones I’ve treated as substitute boyfriends were 1) Chris Daughtry because despite the smug, he was sexy, and 2) Bo Bice because despite the mountain man tendencies, he was awesome, and 3) David Cook because he was goofy and confident and hot. Everyone else was either unattractive, smarmy or jailbait.

Awww please, pretty please? C’mon? Just think of what you could come up with for Amanda Overmeyer. You know it has to involve whiskey shots. And Brooke! Like you gotta buy her flowers and stuff, wear a tie and be nice to her momma, and then she breaks out the “Dirty Nanny” outfit when you finally get her alone. Or maybe “Dirty Osmond”? I dunno take your pick. Brooke seems all undercover with hers.

Seriously though, I am in a seriously silly mood today so I’m glad y’all are actually enjoying it. Too much paper writing messes with your brain. Sigh.

  • noctem seizure

I dare any male poster to pop into this thread and write an evening with the girls of AI.

Well, there don’t seem to be very many any more, but I’ll give it a go:

    Kelly Clarkson:

She was your quiet, frumpy lab partner in Mr. Horning’s biology class, but one day you happened to look at her from a certain angle and she seemed like she had potential to be hot. Besides you were tired of the superficial cheerleader types and the girls who showed up at weekend parties that you were never even sure whether they they went to your school. Plus, the REALLY hot cheerleaders wouldn’t date you anyway.

So you ask her to prom, and just like you’re Freddie Prinze Jr., you have one of your female friends go shopping with her and get a makeover with her the day before the prom. You pick her up that Saturday night, and your jaw drops at how good she looks. She walks into the ballroom that evening and she’s the hottest girl in the building. Just like in the movies, of course, she’s named prom queen.

At first, she’s overcome by emotion and wants to share the moment with you, but gradually as the evening wears on, she starts to send you to get punch quite frequently and whenever you return, she’s surrounded by guys and dancing in a large group of people. Soon she starts to drift away from you on the floor even when you’re out there, and so you eventually just sit down off to the side.

Right before the last dance, she comes up, with some jock guy in tow, and tells you that she’s got another ride to the after-party and that she’ll just see you there. You go to the party but never catch sight of her once. After an hour and fifteen minutes, you decide to just go home.

The following Monday morning at school she walks right past you without saying a word. In fifth period biology you see her sitting across the room at a table laughing with three of the cheerleaders who would never give you the time of day, and Mr. Horning walks in and tells you that you’ve been assigned a new lab partner.

    (To Be Continued?)

Seems like CBTM lyrically is the kind of song that men tend to hate and women tend to love. Guys hate it because they know it’s not true. Women know it’s not true either, but kind of wish it was.

  • abbysee

OMG guys this thread is FTW!

The discussion of sexual auras of male AI contestants is making me laugh. Ok, hereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s my breakdown:

Tinawina, give me and Adam on the rocks with a Cookie chaser! I just love Mandy Moore, lol.

It’s funny reading this thread. I think it speaks volumes about Mj’s readers. If you listen to Dial Idol Danny Gokey is hands down the prohibitive favorite. I know he has fans here, but it’s actually him, who is far more polarizing than Adam. Are we a bunch of tree huggin’ liberals or is there something else at play here? I also think that it’s way too early to give the win to anyone as too many frontrunners became also rans.

I think Michael Johns is sexy, but his moves are awkward and clumsy yet the same. I never saw Cook as sexy, but he would definitely be the guy I could see myself fixing up with one of my girlfriends. I have both the perfect guy or gal for Adam depending on what he declares himself to be. Maybe he’d like them both?

I have no problem with being steered to youtube videos, it’s a mainstay at Mj’s. We are an inquisitive bunch.

    tinawina:

think Kris is dark horse material too sorta, but I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think his voice is dynamic enough to win. Like I can see him getting closer than anyone thinks he will, but taking the whole thing? Hmmmmà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.

I have downloaded Kris’ single from this week and to me it was so beautiful and heartfelt. Wasn’t crazy about the “Remember the Time” single though. However, I could listen to an entire album by him in the right genre. I think he could do well with upbeat songs as well. I hope Michael Slezak premonition is correct and he’s at least in the top three.

Who says a dynamic voice has to win? Yes, there have pretty much been dynamic voices in the past…but this is the year of change, right? LOL! Go dark horse Kris!!!!!

  • TreeFrog

Adam reminds me of Connieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s camera eye f*ck moves. Only difference is that ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not that creepy.

Or not. I half expect to see Adam with vertical eye pupils and a forked tongue everytime he shows up on my teevee screen.

  • hermy

LOL. I enjoyed reading this thread.

    Carrie Underwood:

She’s the farmer’s daughter who who became a pageant queen. In fact, she won every pageant that she’s ever entered, and her prim, proper, and ultra-composed bearing when competing makes it understandable why she’s unbeatable on the pageant circuit.

But, from what you see, she never truly seems happy when she’s parading in front of the judges. You met Carrie because one of your friends who is also in a band with you has a cousin who sometimes finishes runner-up to Carrie in pageants. The cousin had her debutante ball, and your friend’s mom begged the cousin’s mom to let you guys provide entertainment after the adults leave.

Many of the debutantes act snooty and haughtily turn up their noses at you and your friends’ garage stylings, but Carrie takes off her shoes and jumps around on the dance floor in her stocking feet. By your fourth song, her hair is starting to falling down, and your friend, who knew her before through his cousin, says that she’s never looked happier.

After your set, you and her step outside to talk on the porch, and she reminisces about growing up doing chores, and she actually seems kind of wistful. From the way she’s looking at you, you can tell she wants you to kiss her. Before you can do anything, however, your friend’s cousin comes out and pulls her away, telling her that she’s needed inside for pictures. Later you see her across the room, and you two exchange a smile. You try to make your way over to talk to her, but her attention is taken for the rest of the night by crowds of young Southern gentlemen-types around her.

After that night, you and she would run into each other from time to time becuse you started dating a pageant contestant yourself, although it didn’t last. You and Carrie would always speak warmly, but she was always involved with the son of some lawyer or senator. Still, whoever she was with, she never once seemed as happy on any of those occasions as the night you first met her when she was spazzing out to your band.

12 hours later, you wake up in a strange apartment next to a whip, a vat of butter, 2 guinea pigs and a python wondering à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“what the hell just happened?à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ .

hmmm, is the python the one doing the wondering or it is you? there may be a comma missing just after “python” but then with adam, one can never know…

  • http://www.myspace.com/rjveritas MrRJ

Hmmmm, being a male poster, I have little to say about this years gals. One is too young to think about. Megan Joy is a complete turn off (no, she is not as cool or pretty as people make her out to be). Lil appears to be a nice married woman with cute kids.

Now last year there was Brooke. The girl who would look into your eyes and speak to your soul. She would touch your arm and leg over and over and then not understand when you touched back…. would she say no and mean yes?…..I’ll never know…

  • AnoopFan

Anticipating the release of the CBTM video, hereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a different take on the concept. LMAO

    Cutest video ever!

  • AnoopFan

Anoop could win it, but he has to be consistant, and he has to perform well at least most of the time, from here on out. He canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t really afford any more peformances like à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Beat Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ or even à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“My Pregorativeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ if he wants to win.

I agree!! & I think he has learned his lesson, and wont be making stupid song choices any more (atleast I hope so)

  • cookcricket

OMG! I’ve come late to the party. LOL. I didn’t read all of the comments here, but have gone back and how interesting…tinawina and noctem….back to read more. I am so rotflomao!!

  • IndyMuse

I have to disagree on a couple of assertions here. First, all you have to do is listen to the music David Cook made for 10 years before Idol to know that his genre has been rock all along. He did not come to it recently.

Second, I think there is a stereotype of his fans due to the activities of a FEW prominent fans. A few have gone to multiple concerts, had signs, or bunny ears. These attract attention. Many are also on his boards posting a lot. But make no mistake these are the few very active ones. There are plenty of active fans who are not middle-aged housewives. Many are highly educated, with great jobs; many are very young. They are every type. Many are men. The media just picks up on the ones who seem more colorful. Some acts of young women have even been attributed to middle-aged women – many of those hitting every concert, panty-throwers, etc. have turned out to be 20-somethings. It’s hard to shake a sterotype once formed, and the cougar sign started it.

And FWIW, I am not a Gokey fan nor did I ever support anyone else on Idol before Cook.

  • http://myspace.com/saltwatercures pj

I think generalizations about age groups and AI viewing are just that. I am an adult woman (some may call middle-aged, but I don’t like to think so.. heh). I have a lot of friends who think Idol is lame. In fact, I don’t have a single local friend who watches anymore. Nope. Not one. I used to think it was lame until may gay BFF invited me over to watch during season four and got me hooked. He moved to SF and left me alone seeking peeps to talk about it with on the net.

I still think it’s lame, but hey. I enjoy it.

I think maybe tinawina and noctem should get a room. ;-)

ETA: Oh, and I know EXACTLY the club where tinawina’s alter ego would find Adam in Chicago.

  • cookcricket

I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t really find DC or Adam to be the least bit sexy. I can see that Adam is overtly trying to project a sexuality but ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s kind of corny to me. The only idol Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve ever put into the fantasy boyfriend role was Michael John. Now him I find sexy, especially when singing IAWBIAR.

Awww, I find DC completely sexy in a “I don’t know it” kind of way. DC completely knows who he is on stage and connects with whatever he is singing. However, I have to say his vocals are simply amazing to me as well. So if he controls himself like he can on stage in his personal life…um enough said. I must add that I believe there is more to DC as an artist than his sexual persona.

I have to admit I find Adam’s sexuality is more contrived, but there is no denying his talent/art. I just am not finding, at this point, the connection. Having said that, he does seem like a huge sweety!

In closing, I just want to say that DC seems to know who he is both on and off stage. For me, EVERYTHING about Adam is a bit contrived. I’m okay with being wrong about that however.

Thank you all for this extremely entertaining thread…good night and sweet dreams.

  • Layla

I absolutely adore Cookie and love his music but this was just too freakin’ funny::

Because only a guy who is a bitch would vocalize the lyrics to CBTM. And the damning lines donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t include the one where he channels Patrick Swayze.

Treefrog: I am lovin’ Adam and find him dead sexy, but this cracked me up too:

I half expect to see Adam with vertical eye pupils and a forked tongue everytime he shows up on my teevee screen.

I never found Michael Johns sexy. I thought he was awkward when performing and reeked of desperation. He was always so smarmy to me….and his vocals very dated.

Kris is cute but nothing special. What really killed it for me was the matching red aprons. Ewwwww. His vocals are weak and his performance style pretty bland.

Matt, he is the one to watch… wouldn’t be surprised if he came from behind and started overtaking a lot of the others who seem to be faves at the monment.

  • Grammie Kari

I think this thing is probably Adamà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s if he wants it, but ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s hard to tell whether he actually wants to win.

I often felt that way about Blake, although vocally he cannot be compared to Adam.

Taylor won, in spite of not being as good as others., in the opinion of many.

IMO, Taylor won because he was an entertainer with great stage presense. I don’t see Danny as an entertainer. With Adam, yes he is.

I want to see Anoop grow as a singer. He has that raw talent and charisma. A couple outstanding performances and he will prove he has that IT factor. At least that’s what I am hoping for!

  • Grammie Kari

Oh, tinawina that was sooooo funny!

Please describe Anoop. I see him as being spiritual not religious. And let me know if there is a yoga mat somewhere.

Oh, and in the DREAM FANTASY, which one gives the best back rubs? :wink_wp:

  • idolkiwi

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m laughing at these posts. Nobody is seriously projecting their fantasies on to the contestants, here, theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re just having fun.

The discussion of sexual auras of male AI contestants is making me laugh. Ok, hereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s my breakdown…..Any one got any more?

    Tinawina you made my day!!!
I know I am so late to the party, but I just couldn’t resist…here’s one more.

Scott: He’s the one you see in the grocery store and rush madly to his side to warn him about the mashed banana behind his left foot. And he’s so sweet and kind, such a nice guy–HE holds the door open for YOU. The next thing you know, you’re being wined and dined in his small cozy apartment. He plays soft romantic ballads ….zzzzz…pinch yourself. He’s just so sweet and understanding, such a nice guy, but you are getting seriously freaked out by how many times you hear yourself saying things like, ” …isn’t the sunset beautiful..did you see where I put my purse… Eventually you scurry out of the apartment feeling like the most insensitive person on earth. Did I mention how nice he was….yep, he’s going to call again.
    Love ya Scott!!!

The fantasies fans project on these guys is pretty funny. And often so far from the reality ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s hilarious.

Oh so true!… and I picture the reality to be more like this:

You awaken from a peaceful slumber. The air is redolent with the scent of baby powder, noxema and strawberry lip gloss. You turn to find Adam tucked cozily by your side, nuzzling a strange pair of fuzzy pink rabbit ears. You feel sort of confused, but happy?!..so who cares WTH happened here.
Easing out of bed, you tiptoe out the front door and head home–a trail of silver glitter dust wafting from your purple streaked hair.

Meanwhile, somewhere in Gokey land, there’s a python circling Danny’s bed for the 3rd time, wondering WTH happened to that gerbil dinner he was expecting…. :devil_tb:

  • Pixie Baker

I have been lurking here all week in my pj’s….had a miserable head cold…..just vegging…….not wanting to do a thing!!!
Well, my hubby just heard me laughing several times while reading here and he is so happy to think I am feeling better! I guess the gig is over for me….and I will have to get back to my life!
Not too sure whether I should thank you or be mad….:)
…..I will say we have some very creative people at MJ’s! The fantasies have been priceless! Pix
Dingo should be out of the bunny hutch soon when she reads all this *bunny stuff*here!

  • hicksaholic

I want to hear a Taylor story from Tina.

  • weareallinnocent

Meanwhile, somewhere in Gokey land, thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a python circling Dannyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s bed for the 3rd time, wondering WTH happened to that gerbil dinner he was expectingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.

    ROFLMAO!!! Yes, this. OMG funny!

  • Lu

I am just now reading this thread…. I got so involved reading it (and laughing at it!) that I’m too late to get ready for church!!!
Tinawina and Noctem… the pressure is on. You’ve already had a request for a Taylor story. I foresee more requests coming in. Guess you better start writing!!! lol I’m kinda curious what a Connie story would be like.

  • oceana

David Cook’s intelligence makes him sexy to me, coupled with that voice, one of the best voices I’ve ever heard, deep and rich, and he’s so masterful at using it, okay I’ll stop now. But I have to add, the way he looks at the camera or the audience, those sweet smiles and sexy eyes, sorry ladies but he’s sexy through and through.

  • rockvixen

Every time Danny is on screen I picture devil’s horns, sharp teeth, forked tongue, and a long skinny tail. He’s already got the Goatee. He’s creepy as hell and his dancing proved that too.

  • Qcloud9

Who/what is sexy brings SQUUEEES to one woman & LOL, cringe, Eeww, ick to another! So rather than revisiting past seasons, I’ll limit my comments to this season & just say Anoop Desai has got “It”, IMO.

  • Grammie Kari

I agree, there’s something very calm and reassuring about Anoop, not to mention his intelligence.

TINAWINA… Please describe Anoop. I see him as being spiritual not religious. And let me know if there is a yoga mat somewhere.

Oh, and in the DREAM FANTASY, which one gives the best back rubs?
