The Voice vs. American Idol: Adam Levine Responds to Randy Jackson’s Diss on Ellen – “So Randy Jackson said basically, because there are bunch of singing competitions on the air right now. Randy said that The Voice is basically kind of a second-chance place. People that don’t get in someplace else go to The Voice,” Ellen told the group. Levine had something to say to that. “I heard about this,” he explained. “Shame on Randy Jackson for saying that, because he out of anybody should know that if you’re in this business you need second, third, fourth and fifth chances. So we love and embrace that being part of the show. You know, god bless Randy. He was a working musician for a long time and had a lot of success and then the show Idol kind of blew him out of the water. And he is a household name now. It was an irresponsible thing to say that.” – Read more at EOnline

Katharine McPhee Transforms From “Idol” to Actress for “Smash” – The former “American Idol” contestant tells PopcornBiz she’s set her recording to the side to dive headfirst into her role on the Steven Spielberg-produced series, playing Broadway newbie Karen Cartwright, a waitress from Iowa who suddenly finds herself in contention for the lead in a musical about the legendary sex symbol – if she doesn’t lose the part to ringer Ivy Lynn (Megan Hilty). McPhee reveals the road that led her back to TV, this time singing and dancing as someone other than herself. – Read more at NBC New York

On The Set: The Curtain Rises for NBC’s Smash – In what appears to be an effort to spice up the niche subject matter, expect theatrics and lots of sexy twists: In addition to the ongoing battle for the role of Marilyn, there will be bed-hopping, a drug-fueled decline, a brutal divorce case, an All About Eve-ish betrayal, love triangles, an original song and cameo by One Republic’s Ryan Tedder, and (holy stunt casting!) a Nick Jonas guest appearance. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that all of this is acted out, sung or kick-ball-changed by a cast riddled with award winners and gifted Broadway talent. – Read more at TV GUide

“X Factor” shakeup an admission of failure: enter Mariah? – NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) – “X Factor” judges Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger may have sealed their fates when they let a 13-year-old go home bawling. The dismissal of that 13-year-old, Rachel Crow, represented everything that was wrong with the first season of “X Factor”: It was jumbled and confusing, with too much happening at once. It didn’t break new ground. And worst of all, it sometimes just felt mean-spirited. Read more at Chicago Tribune
