‘Idol’ Waitress Loses Job After ‘A.I.’ Audition

The “American Idol” wannabe who was introduced on “A.I.” as a singing waitress at a New York diner was “let go” from her gig at the eatery after the show got in the way of her work schedule … TMZ has learned.

When Devyn Rush got her golden ticket to Hollywood, sources close to the singer tell us she informed her bosses at Ellen’s Stardust Diner in NYC about her trip and expected to have a job when she returned.

But, we’re told, when Rush got back and asked about her schedule, she was informed that her services would no longer be needed.

Scorned Wife Says Judge Was Biased In Fantasia/Married Lover Court CaseEXCLUSIVE: Scorned Wife Says Judge Was Biased In Fantasia/Married Lover Court Case

The scorned wife of a man who impregnated Fantasia is appealing a North Carolina judge’s ruling that she was separated from her husband at the time he started an affair with the American Idol star, RadarOnline.com has exclusively learned.

In court documents obtained by RadarOnline.com, Paula Cook argues Judge Paige B. McThenia should have disqualified herself from the case because Fantasia’s lawyers once represented the judge in her own divorce case.

Jennifer Lopez Feels ‘Emotionally Connected’ To ‘On The Floor’

“The minute RedOne played it for me, I made him play it 20 times in a row, and I just sat there at the board and I kept listening to it and listening to it,” Lopez told MTV News when we visited the set of her upcoming video. “Because I really feel like, emotionally, I connected to it, but also because of how much I love to dance and how much that’s always been such a big part of who I am since I started. Since I was a little girl, I just totally connected with the idea of getting out there.”

Expecting to have a job held for you after going off to the Idol Hollywood rounds is much the same as asking your employer for time off to interview for another position. (Good luck with that.)

  • tls62

    Limbo Lamar. He’s a scream.

So apparently New Zealand has received Sure Fire Winners as their next single. Happy for them, but slightly depressed that it appears the US is done. :(

It’s great too see so many idol alums doing their thing. I can certainly see that Danny could do very well in family movies, he just has that likeability factor.

Yes, but in this case, the restaurant knew all about her auditioning and seemed okay with it. They didn’t seem to object to the AI staff filming a promo piece for her at their restaurant. Those are typically filmed some time after the cattle call and before the auditions before the judges (if it was after, why would the humiliated contestants agree to do the promo piece?).

Her promo piece was like free advertising for that restaurant. Given the gimmick and their location, they likely get a lot of the tourist trade so even some person in Nowheresville, USA is a potential customer. Heck, the person in Nowheresville, WhateverCountry is a potential customer. She bought them a bunch of positive advertising. They just turned it into negative advertising in one fail swoop.

This is a New York restaurant which features singers. I don’t believe for a moment that those waitresses aren’t going to auditions every other week. All they had to do is hold one job for a week. It would of been good PR and cost them almost nothing. They knew she was going to be featured in a positive way on the most watched show on the US (or she wouldn’t be going to Hollywood).

  • Tess

I adore drag shows and am always amazed at how strikingly beautiful most of these guys become when they are in their drag personas. I am equally amazed at their transformation once the make-up and the finery are off…I would be hard pressed to identify them in their street gear.

Definitely. Ellen’s Stardust is where singers are working until they get their big break in a chorus for a show. They’d quit that job to put Off-Off-Broadway on their resume in a heartbeat. Or in this case Idol :) I’m sure the turnover in this restaurant is super high, I can’t see why they couldn’t just squeeze her back into the rotation. They got promo out of it. When she gets the next gig, they won’t get any promo. Make nice :)

I am so happy for Danny that he is getting to do this! He is such a cutie too, can’t wait to see how it turns out. That’s sweet that Candance is so excited to meet him, she sounds really nice.

  • Mary102

Because it’s tangentially related to Adam, let me just say that his makeup artist on tour/friend, Sutan, was AMAZING on the Ru Paul’s show last night! And pretty much stole the show. It was awesome! He’s a real sweetheart and hilarious in person too!

  • Nina1

Her promo piece was like free advertising for that restaurant. They just turned it into negative advertising in one fail swoop.

Yah, I figured promotion is the reason employers of Idol contestants tolerate their absence. This employer seems to have garnered more by being contrary, heh, heh. I’m confident she will be back after one news cycle.

ETA: That audition was a while ago; this story is pretty hokey all around. Wonder how it made the press. Hmmmm.

  • Dakota01

Sutan, was AMAZING on the Ru Paul’s show last night! And pretty much stole the show. It was awesome! He’s a real sweetheart and hilarious in person too!

Mary102, I agree! I have never watched Drag Race before, but I will be tuning in to see Sutan (Raja). I hope he goes far.

  • justshootme

Sure Fire Winners sounds great in that radio clip. BRB moving to New Zealand.

And which one of you sent the “jizzing rainbows in epic proportions” tweet?

  • tripp_ncwy

Her promo piece was like free advertising for that restaurant. They just turned it into negative advertising in one fail swoop.

Since the TMZ article says “the issue is still in “limbo” this may be an effort by the diner to extend its 15 minutes of fame by milking this story and then all of a sudden have a change of heart and let her come back. It would also garner some attention for Devyn as the victim.

  • JazzRocks

From American Idol to Ru Paul’s Drag Queen Show! This has to be unprecedented. In case you didn’t know, I think he’s awesome. :)
And a big fat YAY for SFW in NZ. Sad about no SW for the US though.

Re Devyn Rush (singing waitress) – she’s a local girl and gets some press in our paper. The singing waitress bit is kind of like Lee’s being a paint salesman. She was, but that’s not all she was. She appeared in the workshop for “Spring Awakening” with Lea Michelle & “Saved! The Musical”. She has performed in many hot spots in artsy New Hope in Bucks County, PA and in spots like The Bitter End in Greenwich Village. She’s had acting roles in Law & Order & Gossip Girls and has done TV commercials. So – more than just a singing waitress.

Mary102,Dakota01, I agree with both of you. It was the first time I watched this show and I think that Sutan has a chance to win! :-D

  • Mary102

So after Top 40, the judges still make one more cut to get to top 20? And then we get to start voting, is that how it works?

  • Mary102

Mary102,Dakota01, I agree with both of you. It was the first time I watched this show and I think that Sutan has a chance to win!

Sutan on drag race is essentially what Adam was on AI, lol. Both came in with a ton of experience, a little quirky and different from the rest, but very unique, charismatic and commanding presence – love it!

  • Indigobunting

I have seen one drag show when I was in Vegas; they sang and impersonated celebrities. Have to say it was pretty entertaining, they were good.

I am so happy for Danny that he is getting to do this!

Me too, Josie. He has talked about wanting to act a little, and I think it is good for all the Idols to branch out if they can.
It is really funny that the actress sounds kind of fangirlish about it; we are so used to some main stream media looking down at Idol that we forget a lot of entertainers are fans of the show and the Idols.

The movie appears to be a lighthearted romantic comedy from what I could google. It will be interesting to see what kind of a role he has-hopefully more than a quick flash in the crowd kind of thing. And will he wear his glasses?

I wonder if the “licensing of his music” for a show he talked about in that interview yesterday pertains to this movie or something else??

  • fuzzywuzzy

Adam is hilarious in that interview! Not fond of the poncho, but the comments on the fringe and “washing your car” were great! LOL!

Limbo Lamar. Haha Adam is such a crack up. Adam on the red carpet at the RuPaul premiere has turned out to be the gift that keeps on giving. I can’t believe how many different little treats have emerged out of that one night.

And justshootme — thank you so much for the link to watch RuPaul’s Drag Race online! I don’t get cable and was disappointed that I wasn’t going to be able to see Sutan/Raja strut his/her stuff. But you just solved that for me. :-)

Sure Fire Winners sounded great on NZ radio! It fit right in. Good for Adam– I hope it’s a big hit there. I’d love to see that song released elsewhere too — like in the US!! Loved the DJ’s comments about the devotion of Adam’s fans worldwide and the tweets he was getting — like “jizzing rainbows in epic proportions” LMAO

Aw man! SFW sounds awesome on the radio. Please tell me why this could not be a hit here in the US. Great beat, easy to dance to and that added rock edge and rock wail I love. I love the Led Zep guitar riffs in there too.
Haha! Limbo Lamar! I would change it to Limber Lamar considering some of the contortions he pulled off on tour, LOL.

  • cwm

MJ — have I told you lately that I love your blog? What a blast it is. And so well organized and well thought out. Thank you for everything you do!

    Amen to that. :)

  • artemis

I love SFW-it’s so energizing, it has me dancing around the house ( my dancing is not a pretty sight, I assure you ) and that rock wail is my favorite moment on the album-I love intense music!

As for Devyn Rush-the restaurant probably has a huge waiting list of performers wanting to work there. Both they and Devyn are getting publicity from this little story. I wish her the best-she has a beautiful voice-but even if she doesn’t make the show, being featured in her audition segment will be a boost to her theatre career.

  • standtotheright

Aw man! SFW sounds awesome on the radio. Please tell me why this could not be a hit here in the US.

Because the Darkness barely got play here the first time around. I’m personally deeply anti-Hawkins, but regardless, it isn’t the type of sound you can find on any current radio formats. More power to the Kiwis if they like it, though.

  • cwm

standtotheright — just to clarify, SFW was not penned by Justin Hawkins of the Darkness. That’s Music Again.

  • CindyM

What does Justin Hawkins have to do with Sure Fire Winners? He didn’t write it, he wrote Music Again and the two songs don’t sound anything alike IMO.

  • aa618892

What does the Darkness have to do with SFW? Justin Hawkins wrote Music Again not SFW. I could be wrong. Still love the song and it would something fresh on current radio but catchy enough that it could appeal to listeners. Oh well, just dreaming anyway.

Sutan/Raja is too good to win in their opinion.

SFW, not a Darkness song. IMO, the lyrics ‘glitter on my face, baby clothes made of leather and lace’ and ‘all the girls wanna know, where did all their pretty boys go’ killed any chance on US radio. The sound is one of my favorites on the album though, rock and pop. Good luck to it in NZ!

  • cheese

I think “Sure Fire Winners” is one of the worst songs I’ve ever heard on an Idol album, but it gets some play in my house because it’s so hilarious.

  • aa618892

IMO, the lyrics ‘glitter on my face, baby clothes made of leather and lace’ and ‘all the girls wanna know, where did all their pretty boys go’ killed any chance on US radio.

A lot of people thought the “black color liner” lyric would kill IIHY and it still did pretty well. I don’t think people pay that much attention to lyrics but I still think SFW lyrics are rather clever and wouldn’t hold it up if given a chance.

  • gangreen29

So after Top 40, the judges still make one more cut to get to top 20? And then we get to start voting, is that how it works?

Yup. The top 20 will perform on one week. One Night guys one night girls, with 5 from each being voted through, and three wildcards.

Haha different strokes for different folks, I guess. I think it’s a kick — I love it. And Adam’s live performances of it were awesome.

  • mmb

SFW is one of my absolute favorites! Lucky NZ

  • Mel1

The two songs especially enhanced by Adam’s live performances are Aftermath and SFW. I’ve always loved Aftermath and loved it even more after hearing it acoustic. SFW actually became my favorite for two reasons. One, because it is vocally incredible, and two, Adam commanding the stage while singing it. I mean, no dancers, no choreography, but just Adam moving around the stage.

  • tls62

IMO, the lyrics ‘glitter on my face, baby clothes made of leather and lace’ and ‘all the girls wanna know, where did all their pretty boys go’ killed any chance on US radio.

Ah, yes. So offensive. But Rihanna was able to ask her rude boy if he could get it up, and if he was big enough. Not to mention all of the other blatant sexual lyrics from other artists.

Old news though. I’m glad that International radio has accepted him. Maybe someday for the US. We’re getting closer. :)

  • Avari

It’ll be interesting to see if SFW has any radio appeal in NZ. SFW is actually one of my absolute favourites. I love the hard guitars combined with the dance beats and synthed stuff. (Confession: I like SFW much much better than IIHY or SW. /badfan.)

  • CanadianFan

I like SFW much better than Fever, which makes me a very, very bad Adam fan. I think the lyrics of Fever sound like they were written by a pretentious teenage girl who threw in a couple of French phrases to try to sound sophisticated.

  • Fullmoon

What I find ironic is with SFW and all the rock wails it’s the song that the boys on the Rock forums go crazy for. That note he hits makes them all go jizzy.

  • smeggingnuts

  • djafan

I’m so proud to be a David fan, never have been a fan of anyone in my life. I’m glad I picked this incredible artist to take the leap into fandom. Can’t wait to see the documentary of the lives of those afflicted in India to see how we can continue to support.

David Cook video interview from Hollywire about his album (from the Griddle Cafe thing, but just posted).

    Some notes:
They are finishing tracking this month (i.e. recording vocals, instruments, etc), then on to mixing and mastering the album
He says he is 99% certain on an album name
He talks about Ryan Tedder a little and how he met him and what it was like to work with him

If Adam’s album #2 isn’t out until Fall, I wonder if that means his tour will start in the winter 2011 or even later.

Adam’s next international tour will be more rigorous than last year’s. It sounds like he will be adding So. America, and I wonder if they’ll book him a “real” concert in So. Africa (as opposed to the one that had him performing there, but Adam folks said it was not happening).

  • Mel1

Cook said he’ll play anywhere they book him. Maybe they can book him at that Texas slaughterhouse they booked Adam. Cook will probably have a better turnout too. That was Adam’s worst at about 50%.

WARNWILLIS Well Lubbock, thanks for helping me turn lemons into lemonade, awsome skate session in the slaughterhouse, and a bangin show.. Thanks!

@LizAnneHill: Wow. We would be playing a show in an abandoned slaughter house in Lubbock. I feel physically ill…

@badgercentral: @LizAnneHill think of it this way: now you’re bringing the group’s positive energy (and glam) to the place

@LizAnneHill: @badgercentral nope. Not possible! It’s creepy in there!!!!!!!! 0________o

@DavidImmerman: This is where we are playing today. I’m waiting for Freddy or Jason to show up… http://tweetphoto.com/36810337

What’s funny is that the concert happened on the day that the Appeals court first ruled that Prop 8 in CA was overturned and the press picked up Adam’s quote as a celebratory quote because of the court decision..lol

If Adam expects to book bigger venues for his next tour, I wonder if they are going to skip Texas. Those were his lowest attendance numbers for the entire tour.

He doesn’t need to skip TX, but carefully select his next venues which would more likely will be bigger venues.

LOL you guys are acting as if Ellen’s Stardust diner is in the middle of Nowheresville Wyoming. Ellen’s is hardly having a tourist problem. its in the middle of Broadway. I go there all the time, its especially popular amongst tourists. and yes the singing waiters and waitresses are always auditioning for things. One of my friends who worked in Ellen’s just landed her first Broadway role in Million Dollar Quartet as an understudy.

and people are always surprised that Adam’s fanbase does include a lot of young people. im not sure why. i went to his concert in NYC and it was about 80% young people. I think people think his fanbase mainly consists of older women because from my experience at least, they tend to be the pushiest or the loudest about their age (some woman who had to be in her 50s tried to push in front of 15 of us HS and college aged fans and got into an argument with one of my younger friends) The older fans also seem to be the ones who sleep over night and i guess thats all adam sees in the front row.

thats not exclusive to Adam tho. I’ve seen that happen with most American Idol fans. The older people are the ones who like to bring up their age a lot. i just recently saw online some woman saying “im a 65 year old grandmother and i love Lee Dewyze!” LOL i saw the same thing for David Archuleta not long ago.

but yeah, no offense to anyone but the older fans do seem to be the loudest and proudest about their age haha

Anyways Sure Fire Winners is a great song but i never thought it was single worthy. its extremely old fashioned.

and the reason why adam’s singles are done in the US is because it takes about 5 months for all of his songs to peak on radio

Thanks Cindy! Yikes sounded weird. What were they thinking?

I work right near Ellens Stardust and it always has a good crowd. Lots of people go there after shows and its a fun little place for kids especially.

That didn’t take long – Danny just mentioned in the interview yesterday about a small role in a movie and already today someone tweeted about working with him. Good for Danny. Love to see him involved in different things. I also was wondering if him saying that he licensed his music for a show is for this movie or possibly something else. Either way – I’m happy for him and can’t wait to see him on TV – even if it is a small role.

Milly21, I was only kidding around when I commented about where Adam’s older fans were in the Copenhagen vid. I think generally speaking, Adam does have the typical-aged (young) fans overseas for a 28-year old performer. In the US, he does have some older fans than you might normally not see at concerts for a 28-year old. That is because American Idol does attract the older demographic, and he has many fans from AI. It really is unusual to see the diverse crowd that Adam has at his concerts. You probably wouldn’t see that same crowd at Justin Timberlake’s concerts. Of course Adam has the younger ones (teens, 20s), and I too, saw many of them. The “older” fans do buy music and go to concerts as well as the younger ones, so it is all good.

I don’t know….probably depends on the location, but I was pushed and squeezed by young and old during Adam’s GA concerts last year. People are people. I didn’t notice one age group being any better or worse than the other.

I’d have to agree. Got groped by a drunk 50+ yo woman, then her drunk 20something daughter got pushy and threatened to stab an older woman who was minding her own business. Bad behavior at concerts is an equal opportunity offender. lol

ETA. For David Archuleta fans, I should mention that Cook name drops that he met Ryan on AI because of “Archie”

Thank you! David A always speaks so highly of Cook, it’s nice to hear.
