‘Glee’ Plans Justin Bieber-Licious Boy Band

EXCLUSIVE: C’mon, who doesn’t think that Glee has become so crassly commercial that next thing it would do is start a boy band. Well, that’s about to become a reality in a big way with an episode featuring songs of that tween heartthrob Justin Bieber. This episode is supposed to air a few days into the Paramount release of Bieber’s 3D biopic Never Say Never. Despite some contradictory statements from Ryan Murphy yesterday, I’ve learned from insiders that the episode tentatively scheduled for February 15th will feature a storyline about this season’s new character, transfer student Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet) deciding to start a boy band, and he’ll sing 3 Bieber songs on the show.

Lawmakers had scheduled various fundraisers and meet-and-greet events with lobbyists and other donors this week, but those were canceled as Democrats and Republicans offered a unified expression of sympathy for Giffords and the other victims.

Former White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, who is running for mayor of Chicago, was scheduled to go ahead with a Chicago fundraiser on Monday evening featuring “American Idol” star Jennifer Hudson.

Two’s a crowd for Simon Cowell the uneasy rider on a quad bike

Perhaps a bicycle built for two was too much to hope for.

When Simon Cowell took Mezhgan Hussainy on a spin through St Barts, he preferred to go it alone.

If his bride-to-be had visions of snuggling up behind him riding pillion then she must have been disappointed.

The X Factor judge left Miss Hussainy, 37, trailing in his wake as they cruised around the streets on matching quad bikes.

Feds Raid Jam Band Cruise for Drugs

Passengers on a music festival cruise out of Florida, with acts including American Idol winner Taylor Hicks, Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead, and funk and jazz musician Maceo Parker, got more than music: They got raided by federal officials looking for drugs.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokeswoman Migdalia Travis says the pier-side drug raid on the 2,550-passenger MSC Poesia, on Jan. 4, turned up 15 seizures of marijuana, LSD, mushrooms, hash oil, Ecstasy, prescription drugs and drug paraphernalia in mostly small quantities.

Stritch and Miranda Get Last Laughs at Finales of ‘Night Music’ and ‘In the Heights’

For the curtain call, Mr. Miranda matched the rap he delivered when the show won the Best Musical Tony Award in 2008, managing to find rhymes for behind-the scenes talent (“You know we dress and do pizazz well/That’s thanks to costume designer Paul Tazewell) among others he summoned to the stage.

“I know I got you in a state of agitation — please welcome our alumni association,” he announced, welcoming former cast members including Karen Olivo (“West Side Story”), Robin de Jesus (“La Cage aux Folles”), Jordin Sparks, Corbin Bleu, Javier Munoz, Mandy Gonzalez (“Wicked”), Joshua Henry (“The Scottsboro Boys”), Krysta Rodriguez (“The Addams Family”), and Janet Dacal (the forthcoming “Wonderland”).

‘Glee’ Justin Bieber episode? ‘I think people got a little ahead of themselves.’

“It was so crazy over the weekend,” Falchuk tells Zap2it. “We’re not doing a Bieber tribute episode. It was never the idea to do a Bieber tribute episode. We went in and broke this story about Sam’s (Chord Overstreet) relationship with Quinn (Dianna Agron). He’s trying to juice that up and impress her, and he decides to sing to her … because that’s what people do on ‘Glee.’

“In his way of seeing the world, and his hair, Sam decides to do a Bieber song … and that’s really the extent of it. A lot of the other guys are sort of impressed by that, so they want to get involved. And that’s it.

“We do stuff like that all the time, for many different artists,” Falchuk adds, “but if you’re a reporter and you put ‘Glee’ and ‘Bieber’ in your story, you’re going to get a lot of traffic. I think people got a little ahead of themselves. By the time the episode airs, this will have died down, but I think we’ve earned a certain level of trust with the audience that we’re not going to sell out just yet.”

Plans taking shape for ‘Dancing’s’ season 12

Plans are afoot for season 12 of “Dancing With the Stars” and ABC is going to do its best to top its season 11 headline-raising casting of Bristol Palin.

“We always try to bring new tones and new takes,” ABC Entertainment Group President Paul Lee, told a small group of reporters at the ABC portion of the Television Critics Association Winter 2011 session in Pasadena, Calif., on Monday. “We will have something different; we won’t have Bristol Palin.”

Congrats to Adam on the Finnish EMMA nomination!

Interesting new pic of Kris. Looks like some new promo shots. I wonder who the photographer is.

So Ausiello wasn’t totally off then and Ryan Murphy was trying to do damage control to EW because of the backlash.

Kris’ picture looks like it was taken at the same time as his album photo shoot. He might as well use all those pictures he paid for. Lots of idols recycle their old stuff.

lucysface: I’m guessing the publicist didn’t get the memo that Bo Bice is trying to break into Country music….

Bo hasn’t stopped describing himself as a rock guy. This is from the press release for his album ’3′:

Soulful southern blues and rock, gospel-like choruses, Americana and a touch of country, the new album is much like Bice himself

Bo’s marketing to country because some of his music has a “a touch of country”. ’3′ definitely has a couple songs that have a strong country feel. I’ve listened to a bunch of Bo’s interviews with country stations and he hasn’t exactly been pretending to be a country artist. He’s been quite upfront about who he is and I respect that.

  • GreatAdamFan

A big Congrats to Adam on his latest music nomination (Finnish EMMA)! So happy that he is recognized by the international folks! :)

  • steph6449

Lol to that cruise report with Taylor, though I assume it had more to do with fans of the Grateful Dead et al. than Taylor per se.

Somehow I am not envisioning the same likelihood for rampant illicit substances on the Danny cruise that runs out of Florida in a couple of weeks ;)

  • lucysfave

Bo’s marketing to country because some of his music has a “a touch of country”

That’s probably what I’m remembering. I’ll admit, his season of Idol wasn’t my favorite, so I haven’t really followed his career. My faves still are from Season 1, 5, 7 and 8.

  • Fullmoon

Michael Sarver is one of the most nicest guys there is. I know one day all his dreams will come true. He is positive and supportive to all the idols and because of that I have supported him from the beginning with his music.

Well, maybe Michael can look at Kristy Lee Cook and see someone who stuck with it and now has another chance coming her way.

  • Indigobunting

I think Bo Bice is a “touch” of everything. (not that there’s anything wrong with that, lol! ;)) Both from that description of his album (rock, blues, gospel, soul, americana, country), and from his debut album which was quite poppish. I bought it since he was my fave that season, much to my dismay.
It’s nice Bo is getting that gig with Sara Evans and Diamond Rio.

Fullmoon, I agree, Michael really is a sweet guy. Thanks for bringing that tweet Cindy. I also hope things work out for him. He was quite good on the Idol tour I thought.

Aargh Steph! I was feeling all warm and fuzzy until you had to bring up KLC

Congratulations to Adam for the Finnish EMMA award nomination. He is doing so well internationally. Way to go!!!

  • emmuzka

About the EMMA nomination; when the winners are generally chosen by music producers and judges, the category Adam is in is “Audience Favorite”, so this will be about public vote. Anyone with a Finnish mobile subscription can vote.

The voting is terribly expensive, by the way: 0,95€ per vote. That’s more than one dollar per vote! (But that’s why employee benefit cellphones are for…) But let me tell you, Finns don’t care about the voting costs, because 1) most of the voters are likely to be underage; their parents will be picking up the bill, and 2) they are used to it. In Finnish Idol, voting has always costed money (over half a dollar per vote). Maybe that could be used in USA to damp down power voting? ;)

  • steph6449

Aargh Steph! I was feeling all warm and fuzzy until you had to bring up KLC

Lol. KLC is spunky though :) Good role model for someone like Michael to tough it out and see what may come your way.

  • Kirsten

In Finnish Idol, voting has always costed money (over half a dollar per vote). Maybe that could be used in USA to damp down power voting?

That would be a quick way to kill the show. Taking something that used to be free and charging for it is a good way to build resentment. Just ask the airlines. Add in the fact that paying to vote seems pretty unAmerican and I can’t think of any of the other successful US program that charge for voting and I don’t think this would very well received at all. Plus it would probably concentrate the voting power with the rabid fans. They already buy Go Phones and multiple copies of music. They would have no problem paying to vote while the casual fan would give up voting all together.

MAJOR Six degrees of American Idol separation for me at my A&R class over at UCLA.

    1. The class used to be co-taught by Randy Jackson, and the instructor works with Randy a lot
    2. The instructor, Barry Squire, is an ex-label A&R guy/ current A&R consultant who has worked with pretty much every Idol from Kelly to Clay to David Cook to Kris to Adam
    3. He was major pimping Adam at the beginning of class, talking about how his career was blowing up. Evidently he helped find replacement members for Adam’s band
    4. He was also pimping Alisan Porter’s band, The Canyons. He said that Adam has promised her band an opening slot on his next tour. Anyone know if this is true?

This instructor was an A&R exec at Warner Bros, Geffen and Columbia before turning what was a p/t consultant business from a side business to a full-time job. He was rattling off the names of the people he’s worked with and it is a who’s who’s of some of the biggest names in music — from Green Day to Lady Gaga to Ke$sha to P!nk to Rihanna to Cee-Lo to Will i Am to Madonna, etc. etc. And like I said, he’s worked with a whole bunch of Idols.

I was like “WHOA” because he kept going on and on about Idol :)

  • suenigma

That is so cool girlygirl. Thank you for sharing. I know that he is never going to give you any reallllllly good dirt (who slept with who, who is secretly a big douche, who lypsynches(heh),etc.) but you should see if he will answer a few harmless, Larry Kingesque types of questions. Prom King/Queen? Class Clown? Class Brain/President? Biggest Flirt? Wallflower? Closet Nerd? Or not. LOL.

Very interesting, girlygirl. IIRC, Adam mentioned Barry Squire helping to oversee the preliminary (and later) rounds of auditions for his band. I have to say, if he also was handling the replacement members, he did a great job :)

I would love for The Canyons to open for Adam’s next tour. They were really good at the 2 L.A. shows last month. Alisan Porter is such a powerful singer.

Yeah, 3 Bieber songs is much closer to a tribute episode than Murphy implied. The show is becoming a vehicle for promoting stars at the expense of focusing on the characters and plot.

Yeah, doubt he’s planned out who would open on the next tour, but Alisan is a close friend, they are very very supportive of each other, and her voice is amazing! I actually preferred her as an opener for him compared to Alison (Iraheta), because of her greater maturity and subtlety as a performer, however, The Canyons’ more folksy rock (almost country at times), doesn’t fit an Adam-concert vibe as well, so who knows.

Very cool to hear those deets though!
