The winter premiere, titled “Frenemies” will pit friends and rivals against each other, according to the official FOX summary:

With only five weeks until graduation, Artie and Tina learn they are in a statistical tie for class Valedictorian and are forced to participate in a tie-breaker of Principal Sue’s design. What begins as “friendly” competition quickly devolves into a no-holds-barred contest, testing their much touted post-romantic-relationship friendship. Meanwhile, in New York, while Rachel’s head continues to swell as she experiences some of the perks of being cast in a Broadway show, Santana is depressed due to her lack of meaningful acting work… and is tired of being recognized as “the girl with the raging yeast infection.” When Santana takes a leap out of her comfort zone to audition as Rachel’s Funny Girl understudy, Rachel views it as a betrayal that reopens old wounds, and revives a long-standing and apparently unresolved feud between the two.

Worried that Elliott [Adam Lambert] is trying to wrest the spotlight (and control of their band, Pamela Lansbury) from him, Kurt heeds Blaine’s advice to learn all he can about his rival by “keeping his enemies closer.” When the two spend an afternoon together (with Kurt not-so-subtly pumping his rival for information), what starts out as a mission to uncover Elliott’s nefarious plans, turns into the discovery that Kurt actually gets along with “Starchild”… a revelation that gives Blaine pause.

So you got that? Three rivalries play out in the episode. In the photo above, Rachel (Lea Michele) does her best Barbra as Fanny Brice as she poses for a photo shoot, promoting the upcoming Funny Girl premiere. At this point, Santana (Naya Rivera) is still in the background, as  one of the models in the photo shoot. But girlfriend eventually steps out to audition for Rachel’s understudy, and I have a feeling she impresses the producers! Needless to say, she does not impress Rachel, considering the Slap Heard Round New York City.

Rachel and Santana sing “Brave” by Sara Bareilles and also the somewhat sinister, “Every Breath You Take” by The Police.  Santana performs Rachel’s signature song “Rain on My Parade” and by the looks of it, KILLS.

Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz) and Artie (Kevin McHale) have maintained a friendship, even after Tina dumped him for Mike Chang in season 3. That was mean! But it looks like the claws come out as they vie for valedictorian. Maybe Blaine (Darren Criss) will come along and yoink it away from both of them. You know. Since Blaine wins at everything.

Tina and Artie sing two songs “Whenever I Call You Friend” by Stevie Nicks and Kenny Rogers. And the decidedly less friendly, “My Lovin’ (You’re Never Gonna Get It)” by En Vogue. Are you sensing a pattern here? The pairs sing two duets–a friendly one, and another that’s not so much.

Artie, Tina and Blaine sing “Breakaway” by our favorite girl, Kelly Clarkson!

There are more stills in the gallery below. Sadly NOT pictured, is the rivalry that plays out between Elliott (Marking the return of Adam Lambert as the flamboyant Starchild!) and Kurt (Chris Colfer). They sing “I Believe In A Thing Called Love” by The Darkness WHILE DANCING AROUND A STRIPPER POLE. Yes, you read that right. Why you got to be so mean, FOX and not release a photo? JUST ONE PHOTO. Oh well.

As the episode description indicates, Kurt and Elliott find common ground, making Kurt’s fiance, Blaine maybe a wee bit jealous. Uh oh!
