Have we had enough David Cook excitement for one day? Oh, hell no!

Besides revealing to a group of fans the name of his new song–it’s called “Light On”–he performed “The World I Know”, “Hello” and “Time of My Life” at the Ford Day Luncheon Friday afternoon, alongside David Archuleta who also did his thang.

You can watch his performances via video…After the JUMP…

PatriciaErin is the videographer…She did the Archie videos too. Thank you and nice job!

The World I Know:

Hello:

Time of My Life:

  • jan

There is never enough David Cook excitement for one day. Thanks for the videos.

  • AInoob

It looks like she had a great spot in the audience to film this and the picture/audio quality is fantastic. Nice job and very much appreciated!

Cookie looked well rested and he sounded awesome. Loved acoustic Hello.

  • Lisa

    DC overload!!!…… nah LOL~

Thanks MJ & PatriciaErin. Wonderful Mr Cook!

  • EmmaJK

Never, ever too much Cook :) He sounds awesome and looks even better. I really like that he’s gone back to his pre-idol wardrobe. Seems more like him.

Here’s a little clip of his banter, including snarking on his electric green matador costume.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lim0Y_9beeQ

  • AInoob

LMAO, LOVE that banter! Kristen is awesome for catching and uploading that.

  • David_Cook_Rocks

Yeah, the banter was hilarious. I had a feeling he was going to comment on the green lycra get up after they showed the Ford video montage.

Sorry, I meant to post the link after it finished processing. It took 6 hours to post so I’m going to set the rest of my video to upload overnight and hopefully they’ll be done by morning.

The World I Know should be done processing in a few minutes.

It’s nice he gave the car to his Dad as Dads sometimes don’t get recognition. I think David’s Dad played a role in his musical talent and helped him develop an interest in music at an early age. Taylor gave his car to his Dad also . I’m not sure about the other Idols, wether they kept the car or gave it to a family member. It’d be a nice gift

  • GEEK4VOCAB

There will never ever ever be enough David Cook excitement.
He sounds wonderful, he looks adorable (LOVE THE CONVERSE SOOOO MUCH), and best of all… he seems very happy and relaxed.

    YAY!

  • movin2thabeet

I’ll quadriple the sentiment already expressed that there is no such thing as too much David Cook. Yes, he sounded terrific, well-rested, at ease, in his element and ready to explode onto the music scene. He’s just ambling up to that starting gate like he has all the time in the world. Women, start your engines!

  • mac

Thank you so much for the videos. The World I Know is probably my favorite song that he does. It is such a haunting song and just really shows his amazing vocals. Such great emotion/connection between a singer and a song.

    Women, start your engines!

    LOL. They’re started!

  • spritely

    Women, start your engines!

    lol. Roar.

Another vote here for No Such Thing As Too Many Cookies.

  • Lisa

Taylor gave his car to his Dad also .

Taylor gave his to his brother. :smile_wp:

  • Layla

okay….am flovin’ this stripped down bare-to-the-bones DC! He looked all kinds of hawt in vest and hat…and the acoustic versions of all 3 were just a delight to listen to…come on single!

  • Layla

…the banter is just so DC…he is just so at home on the stage. And oh yeah…this engine is revved up!

  • Jolene

OMG, the sound quality is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. anybody knows how to rip mp3 from Tubey vids? I need acoustic Hello on my i-Pod. So clear and beautiful.
The other two songs as well… David was truly in his element. I’m starting to get excited about the post-tour period.

Oh, and thank you Kristen for the banter video. Made of WIN. David’s onstage banter is always as much fun to watch as his performance, and I hope fans continue to film it on his solo tour and other events.

Oh, and “too much Cook”? Pshhh, No such thing!

  • Layla

I have now read in two places that Chris Cornell wrote “LLight ON”? Am I passing on unfounded rumours or could this be? How kinds of awesome would that be? Love me some CC.

MJ? Any news from your source?

  • noctem seizure

Chris Cornell writing Cook’s single? I’m gonna call that one doubtful.

  • fallforever

Noctem- Go to the TWOP forum on DOC, there’s a link that seems to establish that a song called ‘Light On’ was definitely either written by or for CC.

  • Layla

I have now read it several paces and there seems to be some doubt as to whether CC wrote it or if it was written for him.

I hope that if there is a connection, that CC hasn’trecorded it. After the bruhaha of Billie jean, DC wouldn’t be dumb enough to cover a song CC has done..again.

I hope it was written by CC but never recorded by him…that would be just awesome.

  • Jolene

Yup, seems definite that no matter what the song has to do with CC, it’s not a song David wrote himself. That’s really the only part about this I don’t like, because I love David’s music and I can’t wait to hear more of what he came up with since Idol.

But – I would assume that much thought went into what song should be first single, and if this one was chosen, there was probably good reason to choose it.

  • Mia

Thank you so much fo the videolinks. David’s voice is beautiful.

I am somewhat puzzled as to why he would pick one song that he had nothing to do with lyricwise as his first single. That notion rests very uneasily on my mind. I think if true, that would be a huge mistake.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Noctem- Go to the TWOP forum on DOC, thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a link that seems to establish that a song called à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Light Onà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ was definitely either written by or for CC.

It could just be a coincidence. There are lots of songs that have the same name.

  • cheese

Great videos – I think that’s the prettiest Magic Rainbowz I’ve ever heard (and maybe the last live performance of that song that I’ll ever watch)

Regarding the single, David probably didn’t have a whole lot of input into the final decision. Assuming that the rumor that “Light On” is the Cornell song is true, its not as if radio deejays are going to introduce the song as “Here’s David Cook singing a cover of a Chris Cornell song.” If RCA is worried about his “cred” as a songwriter, then maybe they had David tweak a few lyrics to get a co-writing credit. As far as I can tell, the song isn’t registered on ascap, bmi or sesac as of now, so all we can do is speculate.

If David is on a radio show to premiere the song within the next week or two, he’ll probably talk about how the single came to be. Like MJ said, the title could just be a coincidence.

  • Garnetstar

Regarding the CC rumor. Some savvy DC fans found a post on a CC forum dated from May of this year. They had found a song (Light On) on a writing/producer site credited to CC. The writer/producer in question was Brian Howes. He is no longer affiliated with said producing group but there must have been a link previously between CC and this Brian Howes. Anywho, our aforementioned DC fans found out that Brian has written and produced for, wait for it Doughtery! Dun Duhn Dun.

So really this was a game of connect the dots. While I agree that there are numerous songs with similar titles in the world there are too many AI connections here for simple coincidence.

ETA: Brian Howes has also written with Kara Dioguardi. The plot thickens…

At this point there is still some confusion as to wither CC wrote the song or Brian Howes wrote the song for CC. But that would go against the RS article that said CC contributed a previously unreleased song. So yeah, still confuzled.

  • Layla

Thanks Gamestar.. you’re right…..the plot thickens.

  • noctem seizure

If it merely has the same title by coincidence, then it’s a very unfortuitous coincidence, because the press will reference the season’s Covergate controversy again.

Ditto if it was originally written by another writer for CC. Because that too will bring about callbacks to Covergate. (Also, my personal preference would be that Cook at least co-write his first single).

If it was written by CC for DC, then all I can say about that is that it’s…… interesting (as well as having been an amazingly well-kept secret).

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

But that would go against the RS article that said CC contributed a previously unreleased song. So yeah, still confuzled.

    What’s that? I think I missed something.

Anyway, the more I think about it, it makes sense that TPTB would pick a song for the first single that’s been in the can for awhile and rock solid.

The first single has to be killer. The Daughtry album had OK sales it’s opening week, but nothing earth shattering (It was only a few thousand more than Taylor Hicks). It wasn’t until his first single became a hit that the album took off.

    ETA:

FINGERS CROSSED THAT THE CC RUMOR IS FALSE!

Chris Cornell writing for an Idol winner would be unprecedented, and kind of cool. Actually, it would help DC in the rock cred department. Cornell is a respected writer/singer/musician in the rock world.

Putting personality aside, a Cornell song = a good song, and that’s what DC needs as his first single. Not to say Cook can’t write good songs, but with this first song, I think the decision has to err on the side of caution.

  • justic

    Chris Cornell?
hmm leave it to cook to take a cornell song and make it 10 times better.
too much talk about cornell in the past 2 days, I don’t think it’s a coincidence.
personaly if it was up to me (and unfortunately it’s not) i prefer that cook has 0 connection to cornell.
that interview cornell gave to seacrest after Billie Jean made CC persona non grata for me. i dont care how good he is as an artist, his personality just makes me wanna puke.
FINGERS CROSSED THAT THE CC RUMOR IS FALSE!

  • fallforever

Well, whoever wrote it and /or gave it to Dave to sing (if indeed any of this is true), he looked way too happy and energized at the Ford performance to be in a situation where he’s being coerced into releasing something he hates or doesn’t believe in. This doesn’t look like a Bo Bice kind of deal.

  • Garnetstar

Hey MJ I was finally able to find the Rolling Stone link that talks about the unreleased CC song..Its from their Fall Music Preview.

    http://www.rollingstone.com/news/coverstory/23181054/page/43

  • Trina

I am somewhat puzzled as to why he would pick one song that he had nothing to do with lyricwise as his first single. That notion rests very uneasily on my mind. I think if true, that would be a huge mistake.

We don’t know it’s just ONE song he had no hand in writing. The last mention about his writing involvement was the questions he answered for the new site in his blog and he said he’s “heavily involved”. And for all the control he’s talked about I seriously doubt he’ll have the freedom to make a choice as major as his first single.

For me? I don’t care who wrote the song as long as it’s a good song and will end up a hit. If this is indeed the song and RCA felt it was the best song to use as the debut single I won’t complain and I’ll trust their judgement for now.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Hey MJ I was finally able to find the Rolling Stone link that talks about the unreleased CC song..Its from their Fall Music Preview.

WOW. See, I totally missed that! The plot thickens! I may have to pull some of this info onto the front page now. It’s still all rumor and speculation, but intriguing nevertheless. Thank you for finding that.

  • noctem seizure

The more I think about this, the more I don’t like it. I see virtually no similarities between DC and CC vocally or artistically (my impression of DC artistically, anyway), other than the fact that DC covered a CC cover.

  • ggdoorsfan

From that same RS article “I don’t know what the expectations are,” he says, “but I want to put out a Joshua Tree or White Album.” He chuckles: “Hope for the best, expect the worst.” I admit I don’t know that much about David’s personality or sense of humor, so is this comment to be read as tongue in cheek?

  • Layla

White Album-okay…but if his “record” is half as good as Joshua Tree he will be doin great.

  • Layla

Chris Cornell writing a song for DC…or giving a song to DC is all kinds a win. DC needs to come out swinging with his first real single. CC, no matter what he said previously about DC covering his cover, has a whole lotta cred, and DC as an AI winner can use that.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

From that same RS article à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know what the expectations are,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ he says, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“but I want to put out a Joshua Tree or White Album.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ He chuckles: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Hope for the best, expect the worst.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ I admit I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know that much about Davidà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s personality or sense of humor, so is this comment to be read as tongue in cheek?

I think it’s definitely a tongue-in-cheek thing. He seems to tiptoe around praising the album and his work too much. Seems that doesn’t want to jinx anything. I’ve heard him say several times, “If the album flops, it flops.” I don’t believe it for a second.

The plot definitely thickens on the Chris Cornell thing. It’s looking like more than a coincidence now.

  • Layla

Wen you think about it, the majority of people buy music because they like it and don’t give a shit who wrote the song…it’s just a bonus if you like and/or admire the songwriter.

It’s really for the reviewers that I think CC writing for DC is a good thing. If the single is good…then it’s good, and CC has a good track record…as does RC, the producer.

Smells like a good recipe for sucess to me.

  • noctem seizure

I can see the headlines now. “American Idol Winner David Cook Still Singing Other People’s Music.”

Or better yet, “Idol Cook Still Singing Cornell Songs”….

  • Garnetstar

noctem Seizure…this quote from Rolling Stone regarding CC’s last CD and his new CD might make you feel better…

    http://www.rollingstone.com/news/coverstory/23181054/page/37

Chris Cornell’s previous solo album Carry On was on its way to being a footnote until it was rescued from obscurity by American Idol champ David Cook, who performed Cornell’s version of Michael Jackson’s “Billy Jean” to great acclaim on the show.

  • kathrynTX

First, NEVER too much David Cook! Can’t get enough, actually. Thanks for the awesome videos. Yes, mp3′s would be fabulous. I’m technologically challeneged…I just wait around for you guys to do stuff! Thank you so much. Hmmmmmm…I don’t know what to say about all this CC and DC talk about the song, who wrote the song, who didn’t, etc. I’m kinda just waiting for David’s record to come out. And a single, I’m hoping, before that. We shall hear what we shall hear, no sooner, no later than it comes out. And it will be written by and sung by whomever did the writing and the singing. I hope hope hope that Cook’s first album is a huge hit. I’m buying it, no doubt, no questions. I would LOVE to hear more of HIS writing because I so love his writing, his own words, his own music. But as we know, he can sing anything if he believes in it and it means something to him. I hope that is the kind of music that is on this major label debut. I will cry tears of joy for him when it goes platinum! Love. the. man. And his music. :clap_tb: It really has meant a lot to me this past however many months.

I’m much, much older than most of you, and I can not understand why today there is so much emphasis on artist writing their own music. I remember when singers were just that singers and there were song writers to write songs. Of course some singers wrote songs for themselves or others but it was no big deal. It doen’t matter to me who wrote what as long as the song and singer touch me and stir my emotions. IMO it’s gotten so a singer has to at least say he or she has co-written a song or two on their album and in fact that might mean just adding a few words or notes. I would never buy a record based on who wrote or didn’t write the music. Just give me a great singer singing songs he can connect with. Give me David Cooks new album. I know it’ll be just that.

  • shell29

    I can see the headlines now. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idol Winner David Cook Still Singing Other Peopleà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Music.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

    Or better yet, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idol Cook Still Singing Cornell Songsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.

I don’t think it will be that big of a deal. If this single was written by Chris Cornell, I don’t think that will be used negatively against Cook. I mean, it’s not like Billie Jean, where Cook was singing a cover of a cover. Even though Cook didn’t write it, I think many would still considered it to be his song if the song hasn’t been performed by anyone else. I think it would have been a bit unrealistic to expect that all the songs on this album would be written or co-written by Cook, especially given the time constraints under which these debut albums are usually produced.

If this single turns out to be “killer”, no one will care that he didn’t write it.

  • Jolene

Oh, I really really don’t think anyone will begrudge David not writing the single. It’s not a cover if he’s the first one to release it – it’s his song (like TOML is, as much as we’d like to forget that sometimes).

The question of whether or not this song was written for Chris, or by Chris, or even by Chris for David (the date for the forum entry was May 30th, so it’s definitely possible) – it’s interesting and I guess we’ll know more next week.

The ONLY reason I’m not 100% happy with the news is that I want to hear new songs written by David ASAP, and this means I’ll have to wait a little longer… that’s all.

  • maturin

David_Cook_Rocks, thanks for the awesome versions. I almost didn’t click, thinking I’ve heard so many versions already, from great (some of the post-show acoustic gigs) to sketchy (a lot of the tewer youtubes). And now I’m saving myself for the single.

But not really. These are amazing.

    How . . . could his voice . . . keep getting better?

Maybe a lot of the time on the show and the tour songs, there’s a little off the top from tiredness and less perfect acoustics, ’cause his live voice here sounds close to as good as it does on those iTunes “studio versions” of his Idol covers, where his voice tended to have the richest tone I’ve heard yet (even if I sometimes liked the emotion of the live version better).

I love Analog Heart, but man has his voice grown a lot. Or whatever it is that voices do that is like “grow.”

  • movin2thabeet

I don’t care who wrote David’s new single. Yes, it gives him some street cred with rockers to have Chris Cornell’s name associated with it if that ends up being the case. And that can only help David’s career in the long run, helping get some distance from any AI labeling. And I don’t think there will be issues with the CC connection since CC hasn’t recorded the song himself, or if he did, few have heard of it. And while I do want to hear the fruits of David’s songwriting, we have plenty of time for that – a whole career’s worth. He’s just starting out in the big leagues, and we know that many of his musical and lyrical ideas will be incorporated in this first big-league outing. That’s good enough for me. There’s a season for everything and the most important thing starting out is that he has a solid record that is successful and gets some critical acclaim. The rest will come in time. I just want David’s first single post AI to be a great song and wildly successful.

  • Layla
