David Archuleta chats with host Bonnie Hunt, and performs his single “Crush” afterward.

David donated a bracelet he wore on tour and the shirt he was wearing to Bonnie’s Basement charity auction.

ETA: Still having trouble with the performance video from Bonnie. Hopefully it will be up soon, in the meantime, here’s a video from MTV Buzzworthy of David answering fan questions. An interesting part of the interview is where David talks about the charities he’s interested in. He talks about his “invisible children” bracelet–it looks the one he gave to Bonnie today. After the jump…

ETA2: The performance video is up.

ETA3: Watch a vid of Kathy Griffin and David back stage. She asks him to sing a song, cuts him off, teases him about having a big posse and being difficult. Ha ha. Good stuff.

  • frogcooke

thers a new MTV buzzworthy interview that really good! and theres a really nice pic with it. the interview is in video form. 13 minutes long

  • LK08

ealbino- we miss you at FOD!

That is so sweet when she said to him that everyone who has spent time with him thinks the world of him.

The MTV video is wonderful. He IS adorable!

  • PCdoctor

David is just so much fun to watch in interviews. “here, have my face.” LOL
He is entertaining in front of and away from the mic. Thanks for posting.

  • frogcooke

The bracelet, its similar to the one he gave bonnie but he’s still wearing it(it has a red bead on it)

  • Aladdin88

Aw, what a cute interview! Bonnie was really funny with the whole “I’m old enough to be your sister.” David was as adorable as ever, as always. Him making fun of his old Star Search “hair piece” is hilarious.

    “I was such a nerd back then…well, I guess I still am.” :lol_tb:

  • cruzceleste

Dear Mj in the tag you are posting this under David Cook ;D lol

  • soundscene

lol… first off, I knew the Bonnie Hunt interview would be fun. lol.

Also, I love how, after he finishes his answer to every question, you get that classic smiley-face smile. You know, this one–> :smile1_tb:

  • ozarka

I loved the MTV Buzzworthy interview. Thanks for posting it MJ. He was very articulate. I was particularly impressed by how passionately he spoke out about the charities, especially the Invisible Children charity. I had never even heard of it before. He’s doing a great job of raising awareness.

  • frogcooke

oh evidently David’s A Little Too Not Over You was played on As The World Turns today.

    from idf:

I sometimes watch the show and my recorder is set to record it. I checked it out after reading this thread. They play it during a scene in a bar/restaurant. It sounded soooooo good, but those actors kept talking while David was singing. How rude!

  • ozarka

I love the way he has a tendency to repeat the question before answering it.

  • frogcooke

LOL back stage with David and Kathy Griffin (video)

Kathy Griffin spent some time with David Archuleta backstage at ‘The Bonnie Hunt Show’. The ‘American Idol’ season seven runner-up was in the comedian’s dressing room, talking about calling David Cook “Cook” and offering to sing a song, and apologizing for being “pretty bland.” Griffin joked afterwards, “He’s very difficult. He’s difficult to get along with and has a big posse. They’ve got him on a tight leash.”

    its funny

  • frogcooke

and evidently david HAS seen the defamer vid of the girls crying after the finale…. lol lol Cook showed it to him. lol He thought it was funny but also felt bad for them. lol

  • hermy

LOL. wow, that was funny. Kathy Griffin makes everything funny/awkward for other people.

  • gerreb

These were great vids. You can tell Bonnie Hunt loves Archie! And props to Archie for putting up with Kathy Griffin, lol

^^ It’s really strange–HDD is usually never that “off.” Granted, HDD doesn’t calculate in Amazon and certain other retailers. Soundscan does with the final numbers on Wednesdays, but that probably wouldn’t push him over 200K.

I think I would be thrilled if they hadn’t predicted higher. 180K is exactly what Pink sold her first week coming off of a #1 single. 180K is still very hard to get, and it’s 20K more than last week’s #1. Plus, he’s freakin’ #2 on the Billboard 200.

    Go Archie!!

  • ealbino

    soundscene – sooooo true!!

wow…soundscene.. you are good… almost exact amount for Pink

    P!NK FUNHOUSE 180,470

A little too not over you on as the worlds turns:

  • sue

Wow, so much Archie goodness, lol. Thank you thank you MJ for all the vids. He is such a great kid. He looks great today, casual and cute as ever. I love Kathy Griffin, lol. Well 180k is good but I was hoping for over 200k, we shall see. What defamer video?? I have to go search for this now. I need to go check AOL for the freakin sessions, are they out yet? I feel like a kid in the car, “are we there yet, is it out yet?”

  • JudyOhio

Awww, I was looking for him to hit 200,000 also. Sooo close. In any event, nice debut at #2! And now, it’s on to hoping and watching for sustained sales.

  • E

Well if I’m not mistaken, Chris Brown debuted at 155k, so 180k is great and yeah same as Pink.

but I don’t think HDD been so far off. They were only right on Taylor. Surprised at T Pain numbers too.
#2! can’t complain about that go David!

  • soundscene

^^ They were actually right on with T-Pain’s numbers–pretty much all the numbers except David’s. So, who knows what happened there. They were correct with placement, though.

  • LK08

Someone said amazon is not in those numbers. Not sure if that is true.

  • cruzceleste

Go David…a little sad because I really want him to sell 200k…but still good…

Is great that he is having fun…

And now, ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s on to hoping and watching for sustained sales.

    I agree with you!!!

  • E

Yeah Soundscene, but I’m surprised T Pain is #4 that #3, didn’t see that coming!

and now waiting if Crush goes platinum this week

  • cruzceleste

    ^Go little Crush!!!!

  • soundscene

Someone said amazon is not in those numbers. Not sure if that is true.

That’s what I’ve heard, but I don’t have confirmation. But generally, the HDD final estimate is pretty close to soundscan’s numbers.

  • sue

That darn AOL has Beyonce’s sessions up, what about Archie??? Ok I need to stop complaining, lol, I am still looking for the “defamer” video that Kathy Griffin was talking about. I saw some other vids of reactions to Archie’s lost to Cook, it was funny as heck, lol. Archie is doing so well in interviews now.

  • gerreb
  • frogcooke

    from IDF

I heard Cook on PLJ today when I was driving home. The DJ said that someone wanted to ask Cook a question about the album, but he wouldn’t say who the person was. I suspected it was our David and it was! He said, “Heyyyy David, it’s David!” and Cook and everyone in the studio started laughing. Then David asks, “which song on your album was the hardest to record?” something like that. Cook might have said something about David, but I can’t remember. Anyway, it was nice to hear his voice on the radio again.

  • sue

LOL oh that video, I saw that video. That was hilarious. Thanks gerreb!

  • ozarka

That video with Kathy Griffin was hilarious. She was on a roll until she asked about the Invisible Children bracelet. Ouch! LOL!

  • cruzceleste

Lots of David today, great… I love the interview with MTv Buzzworthy, really cute and touching when he starting talking about charities…

Crush was great, and the part with Katty is really funny…

  • Jabkmc

Ummmm….Hello!??? What just happened in the Kathy Griffin video? at about 1:20? What a shift in body language! Wowza! He totally took control there for a bit. hahaha!

  • Suzanne

    1. Nice typo, cruzceleste. Katty for Kathy.

    2. Jabkmc–noticed the same thing. He’s figuring out how not to be a victim to comedians and color commentators. Good.

    3. I wonder who is paying whom for his song to be on As the World Turns. (Aside–can you believe how hokey the names of these soaps are? As the World Turns? Even back in the 50s people probably laughed at that.)

  • qbaloo

I totally noticed that too Jabkmc! David handled himself very well…this 17 yr old Utah teenager totally held his own with Ms. Pottymouth Griffin.

The MTV buzzworthy interview was really lovely too..he is so centered and grounded. His empathy for the kids he spoke about in the Invisible Children segment was really touching. For a young person, he certainly has a great philosophy on life…he has all he needs to be happy. Wow. And his spontaneous singing of ‘Gloria!’ was a killer!

  • Anya

There were many reports about various outlets (like Walmart!!) running out of David’s cd’d mid-week so that may have influenced the sales. The new shipment won’t arrive until this Friday.

  • soundscene

^^ Yeah, I wasn’t too pleased that it seemed several Walmarts didn’t order enough CDs. My Walmart had 5 on the shelf when I bought my copy. I bought 1, a girl behind me in line bought 3. There was 1 left on the shelf. If that was bought, I’m not sure how long it would take for them to re-shelve, if indeed they had more in the back. I’m not sure that makes too much of an impact, but you never know.

My Walmart also didn’t have his CD in the New Releases section–but my Walmart is super crappy.

It does seem that Jive doesn’t put as much emphasis on album sales as other labels, which could be why they didn’t push for more shipped. Not that they don’t love album sales and want them, just that they don’t push them as hard as other labels seem to. Aside from Britney and Justin, most Jive (and Zomba) artists don’t have huge opening weeks. Chris Brown sold about 150K opening for his last album; Pink (a Zomba artist) sold 180K (still great, but not HUGE); T-Pain this week sold around 165K, etc. Jordin, as we know, sold around 119K her first week. As a youth-oriented label, it’s not surprising that they would spend more of their time on singles and pushing to radio.

They don’t spend as much on promotion, so they can make more off of less. It’s a different strategy, but one that works for their artists. Promotion to radio is free; tons of ads for the album isn’t free. A lot of the cost-cutting features that Jive employs (they advertise products in their music videos–the cost of the Crush video was partially supplemented by the cars used in the video) is designed to maximize profit. Ultimately, it’s good for David because he’s more able to pay back his share of the promotional costs and album costs. He generated upwards of $2 million in revenue this week that will be split amongst the label, retailers and songwriters. The only money he’s probably making right now are songwriting residuals, but he’ll be able to pay down his debt pretty quickly and actually make money off his single and album sales as an artist probably late this year or early next year.

  • E

I wish Jive would promote the album more. It is truly a good pop album. They probably weren’t expecting him to sell so much lol.

  • Aladdin88

I agree with you, E and soundscene. I don’t think Jive really emphasizes album sales like other labels do. This has been evident when looking at the different marketing strategies Jive used for Archie’s album (which was pretty minimal) and RCA has used for Cook’s (which was much more prominent). Not saying one is better than the other, but they are clearly very different. I also think Jive wasn’t anticipating a huge week for David. After all, their previous idol winner (Jordin) sold less than 120K right out of the gate. Jordin’s album still hasn’t even hit platinum and yet Jive seems to be thrilled enough with her single sales to continue with a second album. In the Jive/Zomba world, single sales appear to reign king.

IMO, 180K is amazing in this day and age for a debut artist. A lot of new singers would kill to have numbers like that in their first week. I take it as a positive sign that the number exceeded Crush’s first week sales–that means more than just the die-hard fans have been buying the album.

  • soundscene

Jive is just frugal. It’s how they make so much money. But it’s also how their artists make money. They’re doing a lot for David. They know what to expect with what they put in, and they know how to grow an artist. They don’t expect their artists to take over the world in one big shot. That was one of things everybody was so happy about when David signed with Jive–they nurture their artists and allow them to develop without the pressure of having to hit this sales number or this position on the charts. David has far exceeded what I believe they ever wanted from him to start with. And now that they know more about what seems to spur David’s sales and what doesn’t, they can fine tune how they handle David’s promotion. Great thing is that David doesn’t have to prove anything sales-wise. Nobody really expected him to do as well as he has.

Jive has never been a label that does the whole full throttle mega-promotion (Justin Timberlake aside). Yet their artists are some of the most successful anyway.

BTW, that Kathy Griffin video is full of win. lol.

  • Aladdin88

Those are very good points, soundscene. It was comforting to me to see David sign with Jive because I knew they weren’t likely to up and drop him if he didn’t tear up the world. They seem very loyal to their artists and vice versa. Somehow though, I think Jive is very happy right now with how things are currently going…Crush is nearly platinum, 180K in first week album sales, etc. And all of this has been done within a modest budget, which only makes it that much sweeter.

  • E

Usher is another famous Jive artist. his last album sol over 430k and debuted at #1, the only male artist to do that this year I believe. David is in great company, on a great label :D

Soundscene and Aladdin, I shall remember your posts when the media comparison starts thanks!

  • soundscene

^^ Yeah, Usher was coming off of a mega-successful last album (kind of like Taylor Swift).

  • khomphuong

Little disappointed to see that numbers below 200,000 …Anyway, congrats to David Archuleta. hum…this week is kind of over for me. No more David Archuleta ‘s appearance till next week . Hopefully he will do some blog and Vblog.

  • E

khomphuong: he is a presenter at the AMA on 23rd I think.

So far David never fails to post a blog every week. He’s so good! haha I think David communicates more often with his fans than I do with my family lol

  • frogcooke

David’s celebrity playlist is up on VH1. It’s basically just teeny clips of David talking about his favorite songs and videos. This is entirely too adorable.

    His celebrity playlist includes:
    Michael Jackson- “Black or White”
Gwen Stefani- “What You Waiting for”
    Jason Mraz- “Wordplay”
    Bjork- “It’s Oh So Quiet”
    Kerli- “Walking on Air”
Beyonce- “If I Were a Boy”
    Adele- “Chasing Pavements”
    Sara Bareilles- “Love Song”
    Michael Jackson- “Thriller”
    Shania Twain- “Gonna Getcha Good”

btw he does the thriller zombie dance for a second, hahahaha
scroll up and down the list to check out all the clips.
    (got this from snarkies)

  • ianamy

Well, 180k is disappointing but only because HDD predicted over 200k. Consider Pink selling 180K coming from NO.1 single in Chr and T-Pain selling 160k coming from two huge singles, David did awesome. It’s never about the first week anyway.

  • cruzceleste

So much love for Archie…. Go David!!!

Well as Frogcooke said Snarky found David Celebrity playlist and he does do the Thriller Zombie Dance…

    hahaha good stuff…

Go David, here is hoping for more good sales this week too…

  • Jabkmc

    I love DA’s playlist stuff!

All the bits offered insight to David, but the bits on Mraz and Beyonce were pretty telling, don’t you think? About how he views critics and how he views women.

And the zombie dance was so cute! haha! Oh, and we got a Dang It!, too. lol

  • soundscene

All the bits offered insight to David, but the bits on Mraz and Beyonce were pretty telling, donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t you think? About how he views critics and how he views women.

David actually has, like, only 2 close guy friends. lol. All the rest are girls. So he’s very much the type of guy who would view strong women as a positive.
