Sounded like he struggled through “No Suprise”

  • SpenserJ

Chris has a good voice, but his music is bland and lame.

  • jack5791

Daughtry is awesome. I hope he takes care of his voice because he seemed like he had some trouble at the end there! I’m off to go buy his CD right now.

  • Suzanne

I wonder why they picked Home to do. It’s probably one of the most conservative songs from the first CD–maybe they wanted to do something that everyone knows to remind the wide audience of who they are?

I’m not a huge fan of No Surprise. And I don’t get why Chris sings at the top of his range so much when he has such an inviting, rich baritone sound too. But I think “Over You” from the first CD is one of the best songs ever recorded (that ending–awesome). So maybe there’ll be something on this album for me.

  • Q3

Both songs are really forgetable. And he really seems like he is straining on “No Surprise”. I guess I understand the album reviews having heard these two songs.

  • mgk

His voice shouldn’t sound that bad on his own song.

  • cheese

I want to attack him with a razor.

  • yeahyeahsure

The Fray did “How To Save A Life” yesterday too so I guess they’re asked to perform an old hit of their’s?

  • auntieaimee

There is something very wrong about that beard.

  • mgk

There is something very wrong about that beard.

It’s the face that’s attached to it. The beard is ugly too though.

  • maturin

I want to attack him with a razor.

Cheese! Are you suffering from homicidal stupid beard rage! It would be a suicide mission though, I’m sure RCA has like ninjas or something hidden in the crowd to protect the dude . . . at least till the new album goes platinum!

  • hwc

I love the way everyone in the band has to bring the full Marshall stacks for a morning TV gig… as if one cab each wouldn’t have been sufficient.

I guess it’s gotta be a full stack each and a wallet chain to qualify as “rawk” on top 40.

  • Trina

I was there this morning..great crowd! I was hoping the sound system was to blame for the vocals but he did sound pretty strained. I hope he takes care of his voice but it’s going to be tough with all the promo. I actually thought the soundcheck sounded better. I picked up a hard copy of the CD on my way back and the artwork inside is awesome!

  • yeahyeahsure

Jim Lee, a renowned comic book artist and a friend of Chris did the artwork. :)

  • Sydia

I love Daughtry. I am not crazy about NS. As far as sounding strained maybe singing so early in the morning has something to do with it.

  • lizland

I thought Home was his worst single off of his first album, and No Surprise is pretty bad too. That cheezy beginning and ending with the humming.

Having said that, I really liked him on season 5 and hope his album is great and does well. The reviews generally seem pretty good.

  • kimberann

edit: you’ve baited for the last time. YOU ARE TOAST

  • ShabbyChic

edit: LOL didn’t I ban you back in the halo scan days? WELL GUESS WHAT You’re banned again! Congrats!

  • SparklesATL

I’ve seen a garden gnome that looks just like him! Well, if he was wearing a little red cap, but otherwise, twins!

  • BootStar

I love Chris, although I will admit to feeling “meh” about the new single and loathing that beard-thing. (Why can’t he just keep the mustache and goatee, or go with a full beard if he must have facial hair connected from one ear to the other? :blink_tb: He’s such a nice looking guy otherwise.)

  • CRB

He does Home because he has tens of millions of people who heard it on Idol every week for an entire season. You cannot buy publicity of that quality and he’d be a fool to squander the chance to play that song on national television with his face attached.

Chris seemed really nervous in the interview segment.

I thought No Surprise sounded just fine. I’m just not sure it is a good radio single, seems like wasted effort (read:payola) by the label.

Chris simply has great tone to his voice, his technique has always been kind of shabby. At least he isn’t hunched over the microphone anymore. Hopefully, he has a good vocal coach that he trusts and continues to evolve/improve.

  • BootStar

At least he isn’t hunched over the microphone anymore. Hopefully, he has a good vocal coach that he trusts and continues to evolve/improve.

My voice instructor taught me to drop my chin when going for the high notes and raise it for the lowest ones. It’s counterintuitive, but it prevents a lot of the straining of vocal cords. A lot of rockers could stand to learn that simple lesson.

  • mgk

I’ve seen a garden gnome that looks just like him! Well, if he was wearing a little red cap, but otherwise, twins!

I don’t know, the garden gnome has a sort of impish charm.

I’ll admit that I’ve never liked him. He came off as such a douchebag during his season and then again when he got voted off. Plus, his music sucks. I’d possibly even take Taylor over him.

It isn’t quite at the level of Perez Hilton getting to start his own record label, but it seriously kills me that he’s as popular as he is.

  • Renina

“There is something very wrong about that beard.”

OMG Yes!! my eyes kept drifting to that weird beard while he was singing, it is way to distracting in a bad way.

But this is my first time hearing the ever famous daughtry (people seem to love to talk about him and his success though) but I must say that I was not impressed…(not even close to being impressed)

  • daenarys

Got the album. Like it a lot. I think the reviews that conclude this is a solid but ‘safe’ rock album have got it right. Nothing wrong with that. I always liked Chris. He’s the guy who got me hooked on AI. Melinda in S6. Cook in S7. And little Allison in S8. So I hope he knocks it outa the ballpark again this time.

  • daenarys

Only followed AI5 on tv that year (was MJ’s already around? LOL). What’s up with the douchebag rep thing, coz I’ve seen his interviews and and public appearances, and he just comes off as a regular southern dude family man who’s maybe kind of a little reserved with some interviewers but just clicks right away with other interviewers. I’m more into his music than his personality but I think he’s a nice guy.

  • Harborchick

I didn’t know the CD was dropping today so the Today Show spot, although a little strained, served its purpose of reminding me to check it out. I just downloaded the entire album. I think this sophmore effort is going to be very successful–a handful of very radio friendly hits just waiting to rocket into the pop/ac/rock and country markets.

    Good luck to Daughtry.

  • daenarys

    edit: TOTALLY OFF TOPIC

  • wwlwilliam

edit: it’s good you rarely come here, because NOW YOU ARE BANNED

  • tierbee

If my *#(#* job ever pays me, hehe, I need to pick this album up. I wouldn’t have bought it on the basis of No Surprise which is just… meh. But the previews I’ve heard of the rest were really good and since I really liked his first album and the critics say this is similar… well, I’m bound to like it. If something is working for you, just keep doing your thing!

He did sound a little strained on the performance of No Surprise which didn’t help me love this song more… but doesn’t matter, I’m buyin’ anyway.

ETA: I’m curious, too, about the douche thing… do people just generally find him douche-y? Or is there a specific incident? Not like I care if he’s a douche or not, as long as I like his music. God help me if I had to like every musician to like their music, I would not have much to listen to :)

  • Pam

Between the two performances, I think “Home” was the better of them. I noticed the strain in his voice with both songs that I didn’t hear with NS being done on AI. I do hope this album sells well since he has worked so hard on it. :)

  • tierbee

Love his last album, I’m sure I’ll love this one, but other than that… Now it’s more exciting, we can over analyze to death his album sales. Ha!

  • ShabbyChic

    Bye!!!

  • hwc

I’m curious, too, about the douche thing’ ¦

Maybe the wallet chain. Maybe the beard. Definitely this:

    Photo of DAUGHTRY tattoo

I mean, honestly, what can you say? He’s a tool.

  • Aileen

That tattoo is pretty silly. I never knew he had one and I hear that he’s a douche in many places although I don’t know why. He seems pretty straight forward nice every time I’ve seen him interviewed.

I can’t say that I love the album. I’m not a huge fan, and the only track I purchased and really like from his first album was What About Now. I don’t like No Surprise at all. There are a few good tracks on this album, and if the fans are happy that’s all that matters since he does have many fans outside of AI bubble.

  • tierbee

OK, yeah, the tattoo… I have no beef with tats but tatting your back with your own last name is kinda odd. Not sure that = douchey but it IS pretty funny!

  • sma11ie

No Surprise is pretty bad too. That cheezy beginning and ending with the humming.

That’s part of what makes the song so Nickelbackian to me, i.e. a calculated addition to court Top40 play. Top40 songs usually have little quirkly/annoying things like that for some reason. But yeah, Gotta Be Somebody came up on my shuffle recently (don’t judge, I got it for free), and at first I was confused that No Surprise was playing, because it also had a weird humming intro. Also, Chad Kroeger’s voice can sometimes sound similar to Chris’.

  • rockvixen

Isn’t Chris supposed to be a rock star? I get the feeling of pop singer…star is debatable. This latest album is pop, meh, boring, forgettable…as a reviewer said no surprise.

  • BootStar

Re the “douche” label on Chris, I think a lot of it actually started during S5. I didn’t know about mj’s, but I used to lurk on the scary boards (the ones on the AI site itself), and the nastiness that went back and forth between Chris and Taylor fans was unbelievable. (Much like the Bo vs. Constantine contingents during S4.) As I liked them both quite a bit–along with Elliott and several others that season–I just didn’t get it.

Chris wore his heart on his sleeve during his season, and as he was as unprepared as most of America by his untimely boot, I think his genuine shock and displeasure elicited a webwide reaction of his being an “arrogant douchebag.”

He is also widely believed by many “on the Knoll” to have been The Chosen One (TCO) that season, and thus, by definition, a “tool.” Tattoos on his back, etc., just reinforce that reputation. I’m sure he spends many nights crying … all the way to the bank. :wink_ee:

  • oceana

The songs sound good to me and I’ll be buying it before the day is over. I’m excited to hear something new from him. With so many idols now, I can only buy the ones I really really like, whereas I used to buy some I was on the fence about just to be supportive. No more, have to be choosy now, and this is one I will spend money on.

  • FridayB

Hmm, I liked his last album, but he sounds really terrible here. The beard thing is, well, weird. I think I’ll wait for the next single before I decide for sure whether to spend my hard earned cash on this.

  • SpenserJ

Maybe the wallet chain. Maybe the beard. Definitely this:

    Photo of DAUGHTRY tattoo

Yep. Definitely that. Who the hell does that? One of the biggest douchebag moves I’ve ever seen.

For the record, I like Chris’s voice a lot. I voted for him a little on his season, and I bought his first cd. It just bored me. And what I’ve heard from the new cd bores me too. No mysterious agenda.

edit: Yes, I did. Chuckling now, in fact. Hee

  • breakdown

Chris did sound a little rough today. Maybe nerves or the early hour. He’s always changing up his facial hair. He could be clean shaven tomorrow. You never know. Since he never shows that big-ass tattoo I don’t know how that could be considered toolish. If you were around this site for Season 5, it was mostly inhabited by SPers who even said nasty things about Chris’ family. Apparently some of them still blame Chris for Taylor’s failure. At any rate Chris is one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet and this cd is even better than the first one.

  • jersey

I was here season 5 and don’t really remember Chris’ family ever being dissed (Kat’s, yes) but whatever. I am not a Chris fan and I do think having your named tattooed on your back in big ass letters is toolish, however, and I hate to admit this since I will be in the minority, I actually like “No Surprise”. It’s grown on me.

  • daenarys

That tattoo is …… wow, I have no words now. But I’m not gonna hold it against the guy unless he says in some interview that it’s all about the big D or some sh!t like that. Off the bat, it probably refers to his band, which is obviously a huge milestone in his life.

Oh lordy, I’m getting a vision of Cook now with some big ass tat of the BandWithNoName and NealAndyJoeyKyle’s heads glommed on his real estate when they finally get named! Hey it could happen, he’s a sagitarious, they’re notoriously sentimental saps. Better get my popcorn ready for that moment.

Shame on me for ignoring this thread today. I will be deleting and editing posts and some of you will DEFINITELY BE PUT INTO MODERATION.

Dial back the defensiveness people, or HEAD BACK TO YOUR FAN SITES.

  • tierbee

however, and I hate to admit this since I will be in the minority, I actually like ‘No Surprise’ . It’s grown on me.

jersey, it is funny, I keep saying I don’t like the song but guess what popped into my head and I was singing a little while ago? Gah! Ear worm!

OK, I don’t hate it. It is just ok for me, dawg. I suspect I’ll like it the least or almost the least on the album. Figures it was released as a single, right RCA? Hehe. I seem to have the opposite taste from whoever they are targeting with these singles ;)

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

I need to check out Chris’ new stuff. Haven’t yet. From what I’ve read, though, it’s just more of the same. His style of rock is kind of hackneyed, and not really my cup of tea. I’d probably enjoy watching some of his past Idol performances more. Heh. I do like his voice, but I’m doubting I’ll buy this one. I bought the first one, and never, ever listen to it.

  • SpenserJ

edit: Yes, I did. Chuckling now, in fact. Hee

Whew. That was a close one. At least I didn’t end up in band camp with the others :)

  • Garnetstar

Here is a question for Daughtry fans. Oh first let me say I think these two performances were good. Not a fan of this band so I wasn’t sure what to expect. My question is, does anyone else in the band sing back up harmony for Chris? I saw mics in front of the other guys but no one else was singing. I think if some of the other guys were singing back up it could take some of the burden or vocal strain off Chris. And it could also round out the vocals and give the live version some more levels and dimension.

  • breakdown

Joey Barnes, the drummer, does back up vocals and he was doing them today too. The actual concert performances sound very different.

  • koolgurl

His voice definitely sounded strained to me, and this new CD sounds too much like the first one, which doesn’t show that he’s going anywhere after the initial fans buy it. Have read many places where he’s a tool and have seen those cute gnome photoshops.

  • lucy

I mean, honestly, what can you say? He’s a tool.

His mother will never lose track of him at the shopping mall, though. As long as he goes shirtless, at any rate.

Seriously, I loved Chris’s voice on the show. He was my second fave that season, after Elliott. I liked what he did with songs, and he did a fine set on the tour. But I just can’t get into Nickelback-y rock, so the albums really haven’t done it for me. And I wish he’d get a vocal coach, because he’s always tended to strain to the high notes, and even if that doesn’t kill your voice right away, after years and years of it, it does. And I like his voice. I’d like to see him grow into a musician that I’d be more interested in — like rocking with a harder edge or becoming more of a rock balladeer but with more interesting songs or something. If his voice gets shot, that’ll never happen, though.

  • tinawina

    I don’t care if he’s a tool. LOL. I ain’t gonna marry the guy.

And I like his voice. I’d like to see him grow into a musician that I’d be more interested in ‘” like rocking with a harder edge or becoming more of a rock balladeer but with more interesting songs or something.

Yeah, that’s me. I love his voice, and I want to hear him singing harder and/or more interesting material one day. I think he writes a mean hook but his type of stuff is not my thing. I wish him all the luck in the world though, he’s certainly worked hard for it.
