***

The Vancouver stop on this year’s American Idols Live! tour was my first time at an Idol concert. I’ve heard that the production values were much improved this year, and from what I saw I’d agree. I wasn’t really sure what to expect. Truthfully, I was just there to see Adam but I have to say that all of the idols did a great job and put on a very entertaining show.

Just before the opening the faces of the top 10 quickly flashed up on screen and when Adam’s pic was met with a deafening roar I had a pretty good idea what we were in for.

More re-cap and photos after the JUMP…

The show opened, 15 minutes late, with Michael Sarver. At first I felt kind bad for him being in the opening slot (dangerously close to ‘opening act’ ) but he really surprised me. He exploded on to the stage with a smile the size of Texas, clearly thrilled to be there. He got the show of to a great start, got people on their feet and set the tone for the evening. Well done Michael.

Next up was Megan wearing what has to be the tightest dress I have ever seen. She looked some kind of superhero Barbie, but you have to hand it to the girl ‘“ she pulled it off and she looked stunning. I thought she picked perfect songs and she sounded much better in person than she did on the show. (And the ‘caw caw’ as the lights when down was hilarious.)

Next up was Scott. He has scruff now and I caught myself spending more time wondering how he maintains it than actually listening. He sounded pretty much the same as on the show but was clearly having a great time. Surely there is an AM AC radio station in his future. (I thought the high collar shirt he came out in later was a great choice.)

Following Scott was Lil. Lil should find whoever picked her set and send them the best roses on the planet. I always felt that Lil just wilted during the competition but in person last night I saw what I had hoped to see on the show. Her confidence came back and it showed. Her shinning moment was a rousing sing-a-long version of ‘Single Ladies’ . Whoever chose that song, in this format, is a genius. With the words on the screen behind her karaoke-style she was the first to really get the crowd on their feet. Everyone was singing and dancing.

Anoop followed and I found my mind wandering a little during his set. For his second song he put on this HUGE pair of glasses and I can only hope that there is some subtle nerd or southern BBQ inside joke that I’m missing and the real Anoop fans understood what was going on. As others have said ‘My Prerogative’ should probably be locked back in the vault, but he did it justice and he was having so much fun you just got swept up in it.

In the First Act pimp spot was the lovely Matt Giraud. He really surprised me. I had heard that he was doing ‘Georgia’ and was looking forward to it. I had no idea just how good it was going to be. Matt took his time with it and it felt like a perfect date with someone you’re really comfortable with ‘“ smooth and soft and sexy. For the very first (and probably last) time in my life, I found myself wishing I’d been hangin around hotel lobbies in Kalamazoo a year ago. I could have listened to him play for a long, long time. There were two other songs in his set but I kind of missed them. I still had ‘Georgia’ on my mind.

Just before intermission were two group numbers featuring the top 6 which I skipped in favor of beating the intermission line at the ladies’. There was no way I was going to miss Adam and sacrifices had to be made. After listening to the same two videos all through intermission (Carrie Underwood does have more than ONE song, right?) it was back on with the show.

Allison Iraheta kinda came out of nowhere. One minute it was intermission, then the lights went down for a split second and suddenly there she was on stage. She got the loudest cheers of the night up to that point. She sang the heck out of Pink’s ‘So What’ and got the crowd back up on their feet. She looked so comfortable up on stage. Her hair is wavy now, and longer and in addition to the red there’s pink and blue. I don’t know if Adam’s hairstylist was behind this makeover too but it totally worked for her. Allison looked like she had been doing stadium shows her whole life. Her set was over far too quickly but I took heart knowing she’d been coming back for ‘Slow Ride’ .

After Allison came Danny Gokey, at which point my brain kind of shorted out thinking ‘four songs, just four songs til Adam’ . I am not a Gokey fan, at all, so it’s really hard for me to comment on his set. He did get huge cheers from the crowd and a lot of people started dancing again during ‘P.Y.T.’ He took his jacket off part way through ‘Maria, Maria’ . I’m really not sure why. Between ‘What Hurts the Most’ ‘“ a song that is impossible to listen to without thinking of his wife ‘“ and ‘My Wish’ he launched into some banter that skated pretty close to Saturday-night-church-retreat preaching territory. I had to look around to see if there was a cross or a dove I missed on the way in. But before too long, he was done and it was time for Adam. Church was over.

As the light’s faded on Danny Gokey you could almost hear the room take a collective breath as we all thought the same thing, ‘Adam’s coming’ . The screaming for Adam started even before the screens lit up and it just got louder and louder. It far surpassed anything else we’d hear that night.

And then, there he was, Adam Lambert, leather tails swinging on his custom-studded jacket. The roars found a new decibel level but he wasn’t done us yet. Adam reached out a hand to the audience, waggled his fingers and mouthed the word ‘more’ . At this point the screaming was so loud it started to sound like rushing wind in my ears. Adam hooked a finger behind his ear, an open request that surely he could have a just little more. We gave him all we had and with the satisfied smile of a man who just got exactly what he wanted, Adam opened his mouth and started to sing.

I have to agree with Anastacia, the man really is a human slinky. The videos do not do it justice. He moves in ways I’m not sure I’m supposed to know about. Whichever way he was sliding, he took the room with him. The entire crowd was in its feet and stayed there for the whole set. No one got a response like Adam.

He brought Allison out for ‘Slow Ride’ ‘“ ‘here’s Allison Iraheta in a wardrobe change!’ — and clearly, they are still having fun singing that song together. When the pink bra landed on stage, Adam took it in stride. Mid-song he reached down for it, displayed it to the audience on one finger, whipped it around a couple of times and launched it into the crowd. He never broke stride, never missed a beat, just kept right on singing. It was just all part of the show. Shortly after another item of intimate apparel landed on stage, Adam sang the lyric ‘slow down’ and seemed to pointedly aim his ‘slow down’ gesture at a certain section of the front row. I have to hope the underwear thing doesn’t take off. Who would have expected us nice, polite Canadians to throw the first bra? The rest of his set was magnificent. To borrow a word from Mia Michaels, it was ‘gourgeois’ .

After Adam left us all breathless, Kris Allen came on stage and it must be said people cheered really loudly for him too. They dropped a curtain in behind him to shrink the stage a bit and he did a fantastic job on ‘Heartless’ , the much maligned ‘No Boundaries’ and the rest of his set. I almost felt bad for Kris closing out the show. I think Kris is incredibly talented but no matter how good you are, Adam is the definition of a tough act to follow. But you have to give Kris credit. His set was completely different and totally him. It was as if he got up there and said, ‘Yeah, Adam does his thing really well. But I do this.’ The crowd loved him.
Far too soon the Idols were joining Kris on stage for the na-na-nas and rounding out the evening with ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ (and world peace!) waving to the crowd as Scott and Matt dueled on pianos. (Sidenote, oh please. Matt could (and did) play circles around Scott.)

It was an awesome show and I am so glad that I went. Definitely worth the price of admission. (And even worth the price of this admission ‘“ that the people I work with now know what a fan I am. Let your freak flag fly.) I can’t wait for the albums to start coming out this Fall.

Thanks for the recap Claire, I enjoyed it very much. I’m so happy you got the chance to “Let your freak flag fly” :thumbup_tb:

  • CindyM

Nice recap! I’m going on the 20th, primarily for Adam, but eager to see all the Idols. I’ll be cheering for all of them, I can’t imagine doing what they do and I just appreciate them (even the ones I’m not crazy about) getting up there and performing their hearts out.

  • Squirrely

My excitement was was dwindling, I felt like I might be spoiling the excitement of seeing this first hand but your post just got me all excited again. Thanks Claire :)

  • JustWatching

Great re-cap Claire. It’s nice to see they are all getting good responses from the audience. Especially Adam.

  • freedom_lover

Great recap! Let your “freak flag fly” amen!

  • KG

Great review. I think this year is the best set of AI contestants there has ever been. WOW….Matt Giraud….just wow! That guy blows me away! High energy performer and so versatile – can rock it out and slow it down. Ride the wave Matt – you’re on a roll!!

  • LaurelG

I can’t wait for the albums to start coming out this Fall.

Me neither! Loved your recap, Claire.

  • Renina

    Aww…Thanks for the re-cap!!

And yay!! Matty G still impressing folks and getting great comments like this just makes me so happy :clap_tb:

LOVED in particular the way you explained his georgia as “a perfect date with someone you’re really comfortable with ‘“ smooth and soft and sexy.”

Couldn’t have said it better myself. Thanks again. :thumbup_tb:

  • lamslova

Claire awesome recap! So glad you had a great time! I dont want to wish away my some break, but August 11 cant come soon enough :) Your recap gets me pumped up to go!

  • relyec

YEAH My “Freak Flag” has been waving for awhile. It’s all ADAM’s fault!!!! Great review, thnx!

  • kijico3

Thanks Claire! I’m psyched that my show is just 6 days away and I too am going for Adam pretty much only, but sure I will enjoy the rest to a point! Never been to an AI concert and never thought I would, but Adam came along and changed everything :clap_tb: I am ready to let my “Freak Flag Fly”! WOOOOT!!!!!!!

  • Kirsten

Great recap, Claire! Thanks for writing it.

  • dhunken

Claire awesome recap. I feel the fans give better reviews of the shows then the professionals. Kirsten, Anastasia and you all had different but unique perspectives on the show and gave us the best feel for what went on. Thanks to all of you and mostly MJ.

  • haruhi

When I heard about Megan’s pink mini dress, I, too, thought she’ll be like a life-sized barbie. But your superhero barbie is way better. ;) Great recap!

  • BestAI

Thanks, Claire. It’s always nice to read different takes on the same show. One common consensus I’m reading, tho, the crowd goes insane for Adam. I have read during the season, that Canadians really do love Adam (I know the other contestants have Canadian fans too). There were really quite a few of them in the AI forum.

More people are writing about the Vancouver show, and this morning I read that after the show Adam had three handlers (someone said maybe even four). I think the Portland show had two, and it could be that they are thinking that wasn’t enough. An Adam fan was really upset because they don’t let Adam stay out as long and feel they are controlling the whole signing thing with Adam. They said the other contestants have much more freedom and stay out much, much longer (I guess they don’t have their individual handlers).

  • DallasGlambert

I have been sooooo not wanting to read all of these posts, look at videos, etc. so I could be totally surprised when I experienced the “shock and awe” of Adam when he hits Dallas. But, I find myself reading every one of the recaps and looking at a few videos.

I know it will be so much better in person — I have low seats, stage right. Anybody have any thoughts about how close I will be to eye level to Adam? Row 16 from the floor….I’m thinking the stage should be about that level…. and how will it be from the side of the stage. NEVER have I been to an Idol concert before… actually NEVER have I even known what happened to the Idols after the finale. But, there was never a fierce alien from Planet Glitter.

Dallas, July 23…. CANNOT WAIT!!!! :clap_tb:

    Good job Claire!

PS: MJ, I love this site and so glad I found it. Thank you for the hard work because it seems you must never sleep.

  • Mom in the Suburbs

We gave him all we had and with the satisfied smile of a man who just got exactly what he wanted, Adam opened his mouth and started to sing. Oh thanks Claire…Can’t wait to give him all I have, er so to speak, when he comes to ATL. Nice description of the come-hither moment in WLL.

  • kathrynTX

Hi DallasGHlambert! Are you 16 rows up in the first section off the floor, to stage right? Should be a nice view at the AAC. You won’t be able to TOUCH the stage or Mr. L but it will be a great seat for the show. AAC is nice. I hope you have a great time!

And thanks for the recap Claire. I can’t make the dang show this year and I’m kinda annoyed about it. I’d love to see Adam, Kris, and Matt. Guess I’ll just wait for albums. And the Lambert Glitter Tour 2010! Hah.

  • Q3

Claire, thank you for the excellant review. You did a great job giving me an idea of how you felt throughout.

  • Mom in the Suburbs

relyec, thanks for giving us this Adam link on the Vancouver thread. I thought Claire and others might really appreciate, the um, camera angle in this clip from the Bowie medley.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Nm1kbhPRJc
Relyec, you should read the amusing comments there, also. Wait, I see you DID post a comment yourself. I’ve complained about the lack of “energy” in Adam’s set in Vancouver compared to Tacoma; I may have to take that back after this vid, LOL.

  • elw

I too will be in Atlanta giving him ‘all I have’! I just can’t wait for WLL, he is sooooo sexy in it. The sexual tension is definitley building!

  • Eileen99

Thanks, Claire – it is so much fun reading the different reviews, and I agree that the reviews written by the fans give a much better idea of the feel of the concert. Having been to the Tacoma concert, it’s a blast reading the thoughts of others attending later concerts. It’s going to be fun to read the reviews for the rest of the summer, at some point during which I’m really going to have to somehow wrestle my life back from mj.

I like your description of Kris’ approach – and whoever had the production idea to drop the curtain behind him is a genius. It really does say exactly what you described – “Adam and all that loud hoopla is over, and now it’s just you & me together”. It creates the perfect ambiance for the thing Kris does (which is an awesome thing)and plays to his strength – the heartfelt & genuine emotional connection he creates with his audience.

I’m glad you agree on Michael, too! He is doing a great job, and dang it, if he gets a record deal I might have to fork over bucks for that, too. He has such a happy vibe live, doesn’t he? I think I liked Danny more than you did, and agreed pretty much on everything else you said :-)

    YAY! Albums come please!

  • will

Just before intermission were two group numbers featuring the top 6 which I skipped in favor of beating the intermission line at the ladies’. There was no way I was going to miss Adam and sacrifices had to be made.

LOL – Anastasia could learn a thing or two from you, Claire! Very smart move, I’d say.

Allison Iraheta kinda came out of nowhere. One minute it was intermission, then the lights went down for a split second and suddenly there she was on stage.

I have to say that really rubs me the wrong way. Why can’t they give Allison the video buildup the others get? That and the lack of a final ovation for Kris are very odd choices they made this year.

At this point the screaming was so loud it started to sound like rushing wind in my ears.

It’s nice to know that the stereotype of the more reserved Canadian audiences is baloney, even if it is at the expense of your eardrums.

    Thanks for another fine recap!

  • dhunken

I think Adam must have read or heard about all the absurd comments about him looking overweight. He wears the vest now instead and no one is bringing that up anymore thank god. I think the vest looks better but sad that he most likely changed to the vest because of the original comments from the Portland show. Again great recap and keep them coming.

  • mahrikka

Thanks, Claire, and all the fan recappers, photographers and videographers! I’m going tonight and am very excited. I’m totally Adam-centric but am looking forward to appreciating the best they all have to offer.

I tried to get better tickets, but alas, will probably have to keep my birds-eye view tickets because they weren’t offering anything better on Ticketmaster this a.m. I could kick myself for not jumping on better tickets two days ago, but I thought they may get even better.

So, I appreciate all the close-ups so I can at least imagine what’s going happening on stage. Can you bring binoculars?

  • Mom in the Suburbs

“Can you bring binoculars?” Yes, mahrikka. They help.

  • DallasGlambert

Hi KathrynTX! Sorry to hear you are not attending! Yes I am Sec 121, Row N, which is actually 14 rows up from the floor. It is a fabulous section when watching the Mav’s play and I was thinking from looking at the seating chart that the stage will be about eye level (I hope) from the right side.

Would love to hear from anyone who has been to a concert so far to see how a stage right seat will be for a close up of the sexy rock god…. cannot believe how excited I am to see Adam…. and I am a child of the 70′s so no teeny bopper here…. lol.

  • kokko

I would agree with Claire that the show definitely worth the price of admission. It’s the first time I attended an AI concert, and I went mainly to see Adam and Danny, I have to say the Top 4 got the loudest reception and applause, and they did NOT disappoint. As some posters pointed out, the Vancouver audience was pretty Adam-centric, the excitement over him was palpable in the arena, you could hear thunderous fangirl screaming even at the sight of his name appeared on the two large monitors on the 2 sides of the stage.

I know there are not too many Danny fans here, I have to say Danny did a very good job on his set. His voice was strong, in fact I could hear almost every word that he sang, and the music/band did not seem too over powering (as in the case on other idols). He got many people standing and dancing on PYT, very high energy. The Maria Maria song was a nice surprise, the music has a latin beat, and yes there was his solo dancing in the end (probably the first in AI concert history?). As one of the reviews pointed out he’s no Ricky Martin, but the dance was pretty smooth, and got a lot of applause. (No I did not see anyone crossing their arms, rolling their eyes or giggling).

He did the next song What Hurts The Most very well, a lot of people sang along, and then he introduced his next song My Wish, again he was not really “preaching”, may be it sounded “preachy” to some because he used the “inspiration speaker” tone, but it was pretty short and tied in to the message to the next song. People responded positively to what he said with hugh applause. To be honest I watched the video on his “speech” in the Portland show, and I too felt it was a bit too long, and the one he did in Vancouver was just right.

I like his last song a lot, from what I saw and previous reviews and also real time tweets, there were sights where people got emotional hearing this song, and I am not a person who easily cry, but hearing Danny on stage, knowing what he went through (no need to elaborate) the song did do something to my eyes and throat. In the last minute of the song, Danny asked people to wave together with him and almost everyone in the arena started waving, and it was pretty spectacular.

Overall it was a really good show, high production quality, every idol gave it his/her best, the atmosphere was electric, fun, and every idol got a great reception from the crowd.

  • mahrikka

Thanks, Mom in the Suburbs! I feel a little better now. :)

  • Squirrely

    That was WOW!

  • TWI

Thanks for the re-cap, Claire. Another good read and a great appetizer for our trip to Tulsa (24 Jul.) to see the show. First time for us too. We watch and enjoy Idol on TV every season, but didn’t feel inspired to go to the concert in previous years – until….Adam changed all that ! We’re going mainly to see him, but really we did enjoy every one of the top 10, in different ways.

Thanks again for your take on the concert – it’s interesting to see the subtle differences in approach of these very interesting reports as they come in. :-)

  • Vada

I am not in Canada, but pre-concert, whenever I followed links from Google to stories linked to Kris at Google from Canada, they were always Adam-centric. Much more so than in the US. I obviously don’t know if all of the Canadian coverage was like that, only what I was able to see from my Google page.

Given that, I think Kris leaves Vancouver in remarkably good shape, and will certainly get his share of love in places where he gets considerable air play. And, they aren’t all in the south, btw.

  • Mom in the Suburbs

ELW, do you know anything about where to go for the after concert meet-and-greet in Duluth? My 9 y.o. really wants an autograph, and who am I kidding, me too, lol. Seems the autograph-seekers have had some success, and I’d be glad to meet any of the top 10 (though they might resent signing my Adam RS, lol).

  • Lux

Great recap!! I found this video with the show ´s intro from Vancouver that you described at the begining:

“Given that, I think Kris leaves Vancouver in remarkably good shape, and will certainly get his share of love in places where he gets considerable air play. And, they aren’t all in the south, btw.”

    - True. It’s a given that Kris is likeable. He’ll get the love in all places. Adam, on the other hand, is polarizing so it’s also a given that he will not elicit the same thunderous response in some or few places. But that’s okay. I guess Adam fans can take that. It might have felt really good for him to have this kind of acceptance/response inspite of the controversies he’ve been through.

  • BeckyMD

I have to say that really rubs me the wrong way. Why can’t they give Allison the video buildup the others get? That and the lack of a final ovation for Kris are very odd choices they made this year.

ITA. Even Michael gets a great intro (see at the end of the video @ lux post above). It doesn’t make sense that Alli doesn’t get one.

Kris’ intro is kinda lame compared to Adam’s super-awesome mind-blowing intro. And when Kris’ face fades away in the big screen, a curtain is dropped, making me wonder if it’s an intro or an end. The side screen has huge ‘heartless’ sign which is cool, but do they have to put it in a 60′s broadway way? I know they want to make an intimate feel, but Kris deserves better.

  • Squirrely

Maybe that’s how Kris wanted his set to look. It seemed this year the producers were giving them more freedom with how they want to present themselves, and each set was catered to the style of the performer – they must have given ideas of what they wanted. We all know Adam likes things big and loud, so his fits. Maybe Allison didn’t want her picture flashing on the screen before she came out and Kris probably designed the set himself to be simple and laid back.

  • Eileen99

Allison does have the same video intro as everyone else, but I think because it’s at the start of the second half, lots of people aren’t back to their seats or are milling around/visiting people so that they aren’t 100% focused on the screen. I know I missed a little of her intro because I was chatting.

You are right about Adam’s vid intro vs. Kris’. Kris’ really is lame, and doesn’t really fit him, and the not only is there that stupid “Heartless” neon sign, but there are also really big red neon hearts in the background – it’s actually pretty stupid and not at all Kris. Whoever decided on the the curtain (a brilliant idea) should have been in charge of the video background, too. Seriously, it’s like they had a high school intern design the vid backdrops. Oh well, it’s a minor point in what overall is a pretty good production.

  • Tess

I know they want to make an intimate feel, but Kris deserves better.

I’ve been racking my brains out trying to figure out some way of presenting Kris during his portion of the concert that will placate his fans, keep the arena intensity up, not over power him but respect him for winning, play to his strengths and diminish his weaknesses. I would think that this part of the concert was the absolute hardest for the director and the stage manager.

Kris, by his very nature, is not a bells and whistles performer. He, by his own admission, doesn’t feel comfortable dancing or using the stage, he would rather sit at a keyboard, or strum his guitar, or jam with the bass player. When the same set has to be used for all 10 idols how do you minimize its size and focus on Kris without physically making the arena feel more like an intimate theater. A stool and a spotlight would becoming really boring after a couple of songs. And to design the set for Kris would be an affront to the idols like Adam and Danny and Allison that enjoy and use the space afforded by an arena setting.

I for one have to give kudos to the stage manager and director for working within the physical limitations set up by Kris “style”. I guess I need to take a youtube journey and see how things were done for Jason and other “intimate” performers in Idol shows of years past.

  • AdoK

Thank you Claire for sharing your view on the concert.

‘Next up was Megan wearing what has to be the tightest dress I have ever seen. She looked some kind of superhero Barbie, but you have to hand it to the girl ‘“ she pulled it off and she looked stunning. I thought she picked perfect songs and she sounded much better in person than she did on the show. (And the ‘caw caw’ as the lights when down was hilarious.)’

I’m a big fan of Adam, Allison and…Megan. First Two of them have really great press here (especially Adam), but Megan seems to be under some criticism. So thanks Claire for giving me some break from ‘she is beautiful but cannot sing’ thing.

BTW this is a link to ‘Put your records on’ from Vancouver:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCY3YPVmTvE&feature=channel

I’m sure that ‘in real’ she sounds even better.

  • Eileen99

Tess: Kris’ set works – it’s just the cheesy neon stuff on the screen that doesn’t work. With the curtain, you don’t notice that as much. I think all his fans in the arena love his set, it really suits him. And since we’re all hypnotized anyway (see Anastasia’s review), we don’t notice. And, there’s no shortage of intensity or enthusiasm for Kris, so it’s really not a problem. He has control on that stage.

  • agathe.hb

Guys, I really appreciate your recaps, as there is no chance in hell for me to go to an AI concert – too big a distance :(
It’s so much fun to read all of this, from different perspectives – Kris’ fands, Adam’s fans, Danny’s fans – I looooooove it :)
As for the bras and Canadians – well I used to live in Canada and I would like to just say one thing “still water runs deep” :)

  • lavender1960

Well since a few reviewers have stated that Kris was able to make the arena experience seem like a night club or more intimate during his set, then I think the Idol people have done their job – presumably that is what Kris wanted.

Elton John sits at his piano for most of his concerts now, with more subdued outifts, much as he began, by the way, and he plays only huge venues as does his sometimes concert mate, Billy Joel and the fans do not seem to mind one bit. The music speaks for itself.

And you know, Anne Murray is a Canadian treasure, the only singer my father even acknowledges liking – he is not a music guy, but she stands there at the mike and sings. She doesn’t move, she doesn’t dance, she doesn’t play an instrument even after 40 years of touring – even I want to shake her or light a firecracker under her butt when I see her on TV – but she has and had no trouble selling out venues large and small. If they love the music, they will come.

Yum.” Thanks GeminiDolly for the come-hither moment captured in time. That and relyec’s close-up vid link up thread of the hip action in the Bowie medley are enough to make sure NO housework gets done today, lol.

  • ruskimom

agathe, “still waters.” That’s why I love the Brits so much…there’s nothing funnier for me than watching a British freak flag unfurl. LOL

  • girlygirl

Thanks for the great recap, Claire. I really enjoyed reading all the accounts of the Vancouver show.

I think the setup for Kris’ set is perfect for his style. I do wonder whether he should come more towards the front of the stage when he does his electric guitar jam at the end of Bright Lights, rather than hanging back with the band guitarist. But from the screams I’m hearing on the YouTube videos, that may not matter. (PS – I’m biased, but Kris rocks that last solo on BL. I didn’t realize he was so good on the electric guitar)

As for Adam and his handlers, I don’t know if he has more than one publicity assistant and a security guard. I’ve only seen one handler of his in any of the pre/post concert autograph sessions they’ve posted on YouTube. I’ve seen Kris’ handler (blond British woman) in like every video! I think Kris has the one security guard as well.

It doesn’t appear that any of the other Idols have personal handlers or security guards. And I’ve yet to hear of anyone (even Adam or Kris) getting mobbed — or even really bothered, away from the actual concert venues or their hotel. The fan craziness seems to be pretty much just centered around the actual night of the show.

  • Anastasia72071

Nice, Claire. I like reading the different viewpoints & perspective of people who were at the same venue as I was.

[Kris] ‘Yeah, Adam does his thing really well. But I do this.’

And I think I’d like to add at the end of that: “How dya like them apples?!”
    :smile1_tb:

I have to hope the underwear thing doesn’t take off. Who would have expected us nice, polite Canadians to throw the first bra?

I agree. I know it’s not the first time an ‘item of intimate apparel’ has ever been throw on a stage, and even though the way Adam handled it (no pun intended, ha) was amusing, the act itself struck me as irrelevant and inappropriate (in more ways than one). Unfortunately, I think you/we can expect to see a lot more of that, now that the precedent has been set. Over on adamofficial someone created a thread suggesting that this be planned for every stop of the tour (at least that’s what I assume is the case – I did not read any of the comments, so I don’t know if the response was positive or negative).

    will
It’s nice to know that the stereotype of the more reserved Canadian audiences is baloney

Bahahaha!! Canadians, reserved? NUH-UH. Some more than others, naturally, but in general far too much beer being consumed to enter the realm of ‘reserved,’ methinks. lol :wink1_tb:

  • ruskimom

ITS A MIRACLE!! NB to be cut from Kris’ set and replaced with another tune.

    YIPPPEEE!

“And I think I’d like to add at the end of that: ‘How dya like them apples?!’

    OMG. Exactly.

  • agathe.hb

girly girl, but I am pretty sure that they have learned from Archie’s experience last year, when he got mobbed, it looked really scaaaarrryy, poor Archie. At that moment I could not help myself, but imagine Cookie getting mobbed by a bunch of couguars

No more Boundaries. Great move. what song should kris sing?

  • Zombini

Wow, the producers have moved away from the set in stone coronation song in the tour set!!
    It’s a huge step forward..

  • relyec

it said a new song would be added later so for tonights show I guess they get one less Kris song?

  • webster

Thanks for a great recap, Claire. Since I won’t be able to see this show, I appreciate such vivid descriptions.

    @dhunken, regarding Adam’s vest:

Adam is apparently making various small changes in his set: song order, and of course within the music itself. It’s entirely possible that this wardrobe change is due to his own judgement and taste regarding look (after seeing video) and comfort (after doing one show) or maybe the vest wasn’t available the first night for some reason. The change might be related to fan comments, but like the other changes, it might also just be him doing his job.

Yoohoo!! Just say NO to NoBo!

‘Mom in the suburbs’, I think the idols will all come out on the backside of the Gwinnett Arena. From what I’ve read they come out about an hour after the show? I was planning on leaving during ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ to head back there so we’d get good spots.

  • Eileen99

There is a God and he is good!

SAY NO TO NOBO! Someone should make t-shirts!!

  • vanjess38

    Thank you! Lavender1960.

This is the exact point I made somwhere last Sunday about Kris. I did mention that these guys(Kris and Adam) are in some sort of joint concert and their styles are very different, in the sense that, it is wrong to do any comparison among them.I did also state that I could compare Kris’ kind of concert to Elton John and Paul McCartney kind of concert, which is never boring as people deem to describe Kris. It’s kind of soft- rock which a lot of people love to pay and go and listen to. I think he just have to put out good music like the ones he’s singing on tour now, and I tell you he’ll make it big time.Good luck to Kradam! Kradam lives.Haha!

  • relyec

GLAMBERTS> go check out the link in the vancouver tour thread u can get up close with adam in this youtube vid I found. (I have no rights to this vid, I just stumbled upon it and thought I’d share) YEAH NO NOBO!!!!!!!

  • BestAI

As for Adam and his handlers, I don’t know if he has more than one publicity assistant and a security guard. I’ve only seen one handler of his in any of the pre/post concert autograph sessions they’ve posted on YouTube.

I’m going by what people are posting who were there, not from the videos. A few posters who went to the Portland M&G said Adam had two handlers. A couple of posters from the Vancouver show said he had three. One poster said he had four. They’ve all said Adam is not out there as long as the rest. I think at least once he came out by himself, then they whisked him away and the rest of the idols came out.

Sounds like they are on their way to Sacramento. At least it should be warmer there than SF. Three shows back to back. I’m surprised they are going to UT after these three shows, then back to So. CA. Doesn’t make sense to me.

  • Mtlfan

I like his last song a lot, from what I saw and previous reviews and also real time tweets, there were sights where people got emotional hearing this song, and I am not a person who easily cry, but hearing Danny on stage, knowing what he went through (no need to elaborate) the song did do something to my eyes and throat. In the last minute of the song, Danny asked people to wave together with him and almost everyone in the arena started waving, and it was pretty spectacular.

The day after that show was the 1st anniversary of his wife death. Whereas his style is not mine, I couldn’t help to send him good vibes in the universe. He had been so scorned to supposedly use his wife death (and that wasn’t much in my opinion) but when you look at it without prejudice, that was quite a drama for this young guy…. anyway I wish him success and to find soon another life partner!

  • agathe.hb

I think it’s only fair, why would the winner, of all people, not be allowed to choose the songs that fit him best?
Adam has chosen his set, why burden Kris with this shitty song, especially when everybody seems to hate it….
I feel sorry for Kara’s career as a songwriter

  • Cate

Thank you for your great recaps, Claire, Anastasis, and Kirsten. They’re as close to being there as I’ll ever get, so I appreciate the detail and mood-evoking word pictures y’all draw.

I’m a long-time MJ fan, but finally had to actually register so I could post a comment! Although I am an ADAM/Kris fan, I’d like to post regarding MATT: I think he became self-conscious about the growth on his forehead (whatever it was), especially after the VFTW thing, and it affected his performances on the show. He never took that damn hat off afterwards. I’m happy for him that he seems much more at ease and really able to put himself into his performances.

  • GlamGirlLee

Matt has as a growth on his forehead? I guess I never really looked. Hmm, I was always so distracted by his weird lip curl. I am never sure if he is smiling or crying unless it is followed by a chuckle or something…

  • GlamGirlLee

Thanks for the great recap, Claire, by the way. Mjsbigblog is becomining an addiction of its own for me.

  • Mary102

After Allison came Danny Gokey, at which point my brain kind of shorted out thinking ‘four songs, just four songs til Adam’ .

LOL! I have a feeling I’ll be thinking the same thing :-) Just reading this made me imagine I was in that magical moment, like Christmas Eve, giddy with anticipation over what’s about to come :-)

Adam sang the lyric ‘slow down’ and seemed to pointedly aim his ‘slow down’ gesture at a certain section of the front row.

Also LOL! I hadn’t noticed this in the (not always the best quality) youtube vids – but this is very funny, and shows what a great improviser and performer he is!

  • canuck

Kokko, really liked your blog on Danny. I see him the same way as you do.
It’s good he cut his speech down cause it was detracting from his singing.

I’m really glad to hear that he is so positively received.

  • Cate

GlamGirlee, he HAD a growth which evinced some very nasty comments on VFTW (they’re beyond snark) and when they chose him as the Worst, they had a caricature of his forehead that was really just plain mean. It doesn’t seem to be there anymore and he wears a hat less frequently for interviews. I’m an “Adamgram”, but I don’t like personal attacks against any of the idols.

  • Mom in the Suburbs

Relyec! If you go to the first page of comments in this thread you’ll see I passed along your link of that awesome Bowie medley vid, up-close and personal with the “human slinky.” Hope you don’t mind I mentioned your name and link already, lol. Many kudos and compliments on that, BTW.

Thanks ELW for the heads-up on Gwinnett. Maybe I’ll see you there.

Thanks for the recap Claire. People have been asking for a close up of WLL in Vancouver and I haven’t seen these posted yet but I could be wrong.

    MOM IN THE SUBERBS> thnx!

  • Maria22

Matt’s forehead growth has been removed and now he has a faint surgery scar there, also Adam had 2 handlers, a pr woman, and a guy who followed, there was also the head of security kind of walking behind, but he moved very slow and signed everyone’s paper, so I didn’t see any rushing him through. Before the show, Matt, Scott and Danny were out for quite a while signing autographs and fooling around with the fans (Matt doing a dance) and Anoop came out too. It seems they got quite a few presents from the fans…

  • Renina

I usually just laugh at those desparate enough to take personal attacks towards Matt’s Appearance because he is obviously a very gorgeous Man.

But I feel like the reason for comments on little things about his appearance are made more because haters can’t find anything bad to say about his voice, musicianship, piano playing, performances, or his tour set. They know that he does his thing really well, and so in order to bring him down a peg, they pick on his mole, or whatever else.

I just read their comments, laugh and move on.

  • SpleegsKeegs02

Wow, a respectful survey? I’ve never seen one so far. This was great thanks!!!

  • will

I dunno, I kind of think all of the comments about the mole did Matt a favor. Those things should be removed and biopsied just as a precaution.

  • http://justalittlespace.blogspot.com ClaireC

Thanks for all the great comments, I’m glad you liked the re-cap. It was a great experience. I’ve been stalking YouTube watching other videos from the concert and every time one comes up I think, “O yes, I remember”.

For the diehard Adam fans, I did an Adam-only re-cap over at my blog too.

Thanks MJ! I can’t wait to read all the re-caps of the other shows as the summer progresses. For everyone who has tickets, you’re in for a treat. And for those who don’t, MJ has definitely put together the next best thing with this blog.

  • Grammie Kari

I wish Anoop would dish the glasses. I like his total package without distractions!

I landed backstage passes for the Boston show!!! My heart be still!!! I am already struggling with what to wear the night I meet Adam and more importantly, what to say????? Any advise for a woman who’s regressed to 13? LOL

How lucky can you get? I would wear something VERY bright so he can remember you! Be unforgettable and sincere!

    Thank you, Claire.

  • ShariG

Thank you for this account of the show. I have to say as soon as I read “Adam fan” I was pretty sure it would not be a fair account of the audience reaction or of the show itself, but you did a great job of bringing us right along with you. I’m happy for all of the idols that the show was a good one and that you were able to find positive things to say about each performance. As a Kris fan, I can’t wait for the “Kris Allen show”. I think your interpretation of the way the set was handled, “yeah Adam is great at what he does, but this is what I do” is right on target and the great thing is that fans of both artists and their individual style have something to cheer about. If I can still get a ticket, I am going to fly to Arkansas to see Kris in his home element. He is a really class act. Thanks again for a really interesting and well done recap.
