Carrie Underwood graces the cover of the March issue of Cosmopolitan magazine. As female lifestyle magazines typically do, Cosmo has airbrushed the life out of Carrie’s photo. It doesn’t look like her.
The cover headlines are spectacular, aren’t they? “How to Touch a Naked Man”? Gotta give it up for Cosmo, they manage to stay in the game with material that seems increasingly retro.

More News: Carrie is singing the National Anthem at Sunday’s Superbowl, her guest-starring episode of How I Met Your Mother airs March 1, she’s got a starring role in an Independent film, Soul Surfer, she’s scheduled to perform at the Hollywood Bowl on October 1st, and it’s just been announced that she’ll appear at the CMA Festival in June.

Plus, she’s getting married! And, her “Temporary Home” music video went to #1 on iTunes (it’s currently #1)

Bonus: Check out Carrie videos from her NFL press conference in Miami yesterday, HERE and HERE.  A reporter asks her about “Pants on the  Ground”.  Carrie’s deadpan answer is awesome. (She and Queen Latifah sing a verse!)

Plus, more from Cosmo after the jump, including a behind-the-scenes video…

From the cover article:

An Oklahoma girl like me wouldn’t even know how to be a diva,” she explains. “I’m just a person who has a cool job. I love to be at home. I rarely go to clubs…and I always wear underwear! I just know I’d fall down, and that’s not for everyone to see.

Cosmo is stacked behind a face placket at most of the stores I go to…so you can see the magazine title but not the whole pic. And if you close one eye and squint you can sort of tell it’s Carrie….but I’m sure the “boobs” are pretty much air brushed and highlighted.

But, actually, I think the cover turned out reasonably well and Carrie looks somewhat alive in the picture. Funny headlines, though.

    YUM!!! Smokin Hot. :)

  • windmills

There’s video of the photo shoot up at the Cosmo website link MJ posted. Carrie looks great in the video but the airbrushing is ridiculous. I don’t like the cover. It’s pretty funny (in an oh how embarrassing way) to see Carrie’s name with all those headlines around her. Her fiance is probably going to get so much grief from the guys in the locker room because of it. LOL.

I loved Carrie’s response to the Pants On The Ground question. I also liked how she started out answering about who she was rooting for at the Super Bowl by imitating Miss Teen South Carolina.

Carrie blogged at her fan club about why she took the Soul Surfer role. She basically said it’s because Bethany Hamilton’s faith and story inspired her so much.

The Hollywood Bowl gig is very cool because not only is it a great venue, Carrie gets to perform with the Hollywood Bowl orchestra.

  • oceana

She looks gorgeous. Cosmo sure is sexually explicit on their cover now aren’t they? “16 naughty strokes to put him over the edge” … very soft porn of them. I probably haven’t read one in 30 years, lol.

  • HeidiL

I think she looks beautiful in both the video and on the cover. I’m not sure what they airbrushed but judging from the video she looks fabulous without any touchups or is the video airbrushed too?

I thought she showed lots of personality at the NFL press conference and the interview after. Idon’t know what people are talking about when they say she doesn’t have any.

  • Truthiness

That doesn’t even look like her, I swear. Second off, that is a slutty, slutty, slutty (as Duchess of Orange –Michael Kors would say) outfit. I know, de rigueur for Cosmo, but not so much for Carrie Underwood, so kind of a disconnect for me. Plus that she looks slutty, slutty, slutty.

  • OhMyRawrrr

I first saw the cover at survivor sucks and I thought someone had photoshopped Carrie as a joke with “joke” headlines and all. She’s a beautiful girl – but i don’t really like the cover or her outfit. And I really don’t like Cosmo. Congrats on all of her success, but i think I would rather see her on the cover of other magazines.

  • oceana

I think she looked sluttier in that Casanova skirt with her legs apart. It seemed like she wanted people to look in one place only. This picture doesn’t look slutty to me. Just provocative in a mild way.

As far as personality she’s showing more of that then she used to.

It doesn’t look like her at all IMHO

  • luval

Carriebrushed to the hilt and dress doesn’t fit right, as usual.

The video is definitely not airbrushed and like I said I think Carrie looks like her typical gorgeous self there, much better than the cover. To continue on a shallow note I really prefer Carrie’s shorter, extension-less hair these days.

The best quote in Carrie’s Cosmo interview is probably the one where she talked about the standards imposed on women by the industry. She commented that there are a lot of really talented women who get passed over because they don’t have the right look. Point being that I think Carrie is well aware that she’s playing the looks game and that has played a part in the fact that she’s been able to keep such a high profile. She isn’t kidding herself about that and I respect that she’s self aware that way. She backs that up with her talent, a lot of hard work, and a commitment to good health and fitness.

One cute bit is that apparently her fiance’s mom used to tape her on American Idol and show Mike.

LOL I bet he did get ribbed about it. Those headlines around her were pretty funny when you think of it like that.

That cover pic is awful. She looked great in the video, though. Oh, and I SO.WANT her black shirt with the sequins from the NFL video. I need to go find that top. It’s probably $1000 for what’s basically a sleeveless t-shirt with some sequins but I love it…

  • Jayd

She’s one of the most naturally beautiful stars there is, there’s no reason to airbrush. What a shame.

  • tiger92

I don’t care if it’s airbrushed or not. It seems as if they airbrush or fix EVERYBODY! Seriously, if they have to airbrush Carrie, then they must do it to everyone.
I will say I was quite shocked at the photo though. Not because I’m easily shocked, but because it is Carrie! Hey, she has a smokin’ body-but I didn’t expect a dress and pose like this.
I’m sure some people will be shocked or even offended because of this picture and the fact that Carrie is on the cover of Cosmopolitan. (Gasp!)This might even be a mini scandal and get her some press. I bet it will end up on ET and I’m SURE all the country music djs will be talking about it!
This might have been a really smart move! :)

  • Chicagolaw

    I barely recognized her!

    The headlines are a riot.

  • Tess

Well, I must say that after watching the video I can truly say that I am pretty oblivious to Carrie….who would have thunk this was her 3rd Cosmo cover.

  • rayni

What did they do to our gorgeous Carrie??? Something about her mouth isn’t right. pffft!

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

who would have thunk this was her 3rd Cosmo cover.

I remember her last cover. It wasn’t quite as sexy as this one. Cosmo isn’t scandalous. It’s so retro and quaint. Now if she did a spread for Maxim, that would get people talking…

  • Nina1

16 naughty strokes that will send him over the edge.

    Oh boy, a pet article.

  • mzbet

I guess I’ll be the minority here. I love the cover. I love the dress, she looks great in it, and it doesn’t seem overly airbrushed to me. She’s just so flawless naturally, maybe it seems airbrushed. Whatever. I love it!

  • thesheriff

The only reason I knew it was CArrie was because her hand was on her waist. Someone told her to pose that way in 2005….she’s not forgotten it.

Now that made me laugh hard !
I saw a picture of her and Mike on the Grammy Red Carpet
and it was HIM who had his hand on his waist ; I laughed
    when I saw it.

  • offside

No, that’s wrong; it was HE who had his hand on his waist.

Hilarious you got that right! I swear when Carrie sees a camera there is a string that pulls her arm up to her waist automatically.

Carrie’s mouth is way weird in that picture. It kind of looks like a “got milk?” commercial.

  • Truthiness

Now that I’ve gotten my shallow comments out of the way…well for now. Congrats to Carrie on the number 1 video on iTunes. Yay for her!

  • bean99

I’d never have known that was Carrie. She’s so pretty, why would they do that?

  • Valentin432

I guess the label and managers are trying to market her a different way, more sexy and mature, just a standard move for stars who are becomming too old to play teenage princess.

I just can’t buy sexy Carrie. She’s beautifull no doubt about it but I still have the Idol image when she moved in a clumsy way with the robot stare and even tough she has evolved as a performer I don’t see anything sexy yet. Not wearing pant does not make someone sexy.

  • Keel

I think this is just Cosmo doing their thing. It doesn’t have to be attributed to the label and her managers. Since it’s her third Cosmo cover, why all of a sudden would this spell (and the bad airbrushing job) spell a different direction for Carrie?

  • Mtlfan

wow sexy lady!! love the dress!!!

This said, reading the titles from top down, I was laughing:

    “Carrie Underwood
The Surprising Story Behind Her Big Love”

“How I Solved Our Sex Issue”

  • Valentin432

I would think that her managers would negociate a cover like that. After all it’s her image that will be affected by this.
I didn’t see the other cosmo covers but I read that they weren’t as “provocative”.

I may be late on the action here since I don’t follow Carrie’s carreer very closely. Maybee this is par for the course for her.

  • windmills

Idk is this Cosmo cover much more provocative than this one from 2007? I don’t think so. ITA with Keel, this is just Cosmo doing their usual thing. I’m sure Carrie and her people know what to expect from Cosmo and I don’t think they’re concerned, nor do I think this is some deliberate marketing change. Especially after you read the article.

Carrie’s got an Allure cover coming up next month that’ll probably be a different look.

As far as image Carrie’s current single is her expression of her personal faith. I think she’s just not somebody who’s pigeonholed easily at any given time but she’s got her own core of standards and beliefs guiding her as to what she thinks is appropriate or not.

I actually do see a big difference between the two.
In the old cover she has a big smile and the dress is more cute young all american girl, in this one she has a come hither look and the body angle makes the picture focus much more on the shapes and curves, not to mention the highlight is on the decollete here.
    But MMV.

As for changing her image and marketing her differently I was just making a supposition based on limited evidence, I am way overmatched here since I don’t follow her carreer closely. I Just though it was kind of a normal trajectory to make her evolve and showcase a more mature and sexy side to her as she gets older.

  • mandabutter

Her face has a more “sun-kissed” glow in the video package, don’t know why they felt they had to mess with that. She looks like a combination of Marissa Miller (Victoria’s Secret, S.I.) and Jenny McCarthy in her heyday (even tho I still find her freakin’ gorgeous today) on the cover at least.

Her chest and the fit of the dress at that angle looks awkward. In the video it looks like it fits like a glove from straight on, but with that pose that made the cover….it’s just unfortunate. She’s incredibly good-looking everyday of the year in my book so she can do no wrong.
Maybe the mag wanted “Shape” like controversy that they had with Kelly Clarkson. Plus, imho Carrie should always be photographed with a toothy smile, mouth open.

  • Sherena

That’s not what Carrie’s body looks like at all. It’s ridiculously idealized, and to a very specific kind of ideal. Of course I’m not under the delusion that this is anything unusual in the entertainment industry, but it definitely reaffirms my conviction that we need more realism in the depiction of women. That, or more fantasy in the depiction of men. There is no equality here.

  • YankeeFan08

It doesn’t even look like Carrie. She’s much prettier than that photo.

  • windmills

I actually do see a big difference between the two.

See and I thought they were trying to be suggestive with reverse color scheme of a French maid’s uniform. * shrugs *

Anyhoo it definitely shows the pitfalls of commenting based on limited evidence. Every now and then Carrie’ll wear something that raises people’s eyebrows and makes them wonder if she’s going more sexy and then she’ll follow with something different for months. Bottom line is Carrie’s gotten more confident over the past few years but she’s never owned her sexiness and that’s why you’ll find plenty of people who don’t think she has that quality.

By the way artist management does not get editorial control over magazine covers. Certainly not in the case of someone like Carrie. If we’re talking huge megastar like Angelina Jolie maybe.

FWIW I’ve seen the cover in person and it’s better than the capture that’s going around. It definitely looks less washed out. But I don’t like the hair and I still think it looks too posed and airbrushed.

I’m pretty amazed at how everywhere Carrie seems to be right now. Idk why but I didn’t expect it this time.
