Watch Carrie Underwood turn into a human Rorschach during a stunning performance of
Blown Away/Two Black Cadillacs” during Sunday night’s (Feb 10) Grammy 2013 telecast.  The dress was mesmerizing…and so was the voice.

Carrie was great.  The effect on the dress was cool, too.  American Idol produces winners who can put on amazing live performances.

  • FinalFantasy13

i loved that rendition of blown away.. so haunting, the way it’s supposed to be.

  • sporkle

    Wow. Just stunning!

  • potatorocks

I didn’t love this performance but the  butterflies escaping from her dress at the end was kind of cool.

This was sensational. One of the best performances all night.

Truly an amazing performance from Carrie Underwood! STUNNING!

Both of her songs bore very vague resemblance to some of my favorite alternative rock bands. I loved both songs. Gonna have to buy her album.

  • breakdown

She didn’t need the stupid gimmick.

  • mtthew

you’re right, she didn’t need it, but people will talk about it so that’s never a  bad thing.

carrie sounded AMAZING tonight. can’t wait to hear if there are any sale bumps for her this week :)

  • MellyPer1692

Awww Adam was also fanboying her performance on twitter.

2 Black Cadillacs has become my favorite Carrie song.

  • macfae

I loved it.   Carrie sounded fantastic and the visuals were cool.  If you’re going ott, the Grammmy Awards is the place.  Definitely memorable.

  • Anny_nanny

We have not had broadcast the ceremony so far, so at least tell us who was awarded.

    Carrie is gorgeous. Period.
But the effect of the dress was not superfluous, though at first I didn’t understand why she wore a dress of the bride.

Performance of the night for me and I’m not even a country fan. She outdone Kelly big time!

Thank god there’s a country representative that really shined @ Grammys! Carrie Underwood is truly the real deal, the ENTERTAINER.
I didn’t know what happen to the Miranda/Dierks duet, I thought they were going to work just fine, but pretty awful.
And that opening number, CIRCUS FREAK by taylor swift, aka pop sensation, didn’t really get much attention, lol.

  • jga94

    Wow!Just wow….

She sounded fantastic.  The visuals were stunning.  But I also liked the simpler performance of Miranda/Dierks–there’s room for both in country music.:))

It’s official: Carrie has become an artist. What a performance.

Since I don’t follow Carrie I am not that familiar with her songs.

Were the lights on her dress have any significance for the song 2 Black Cadillac or was it only for show?

  • Listening

Umm I love me some Carrie I think she has a phenomenal voice. Her range is incredible. And she can pull off so many genres of music country, rock, pop, standards. I’ve heard her do them all flawlessly But… I did not like that performance. Blown Away did not work slowed down she tried to make it more dramatic and that messed it up. It stripped away all the passion of the song. The album version is amazing she didn’t need to do anything to it it. It was already Grammys ready. I wish she had sung that song straight could of had a moment.

And two Black Cadillacs  the entire time I was watching her dress instead of listening to her sing. But I have to admit I might be a tad biased when it comes to that song because well… I dislike it. Okay maybe I just take my songs too serious but I can’t get over the fact a guy was killed just b/c he cheated. That doesn’t warrant death. The whole song just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

It might seem odd coming from the girl who loves the song Before He Cheats but then again he didn’t die. And in the back of my mind I always thought he’d simply take her to court and she’d have to pay for the damages and it be an easy conviction b/c she signed it. Despite that it’s still a fun song.

  • Kirsten

Wonderful performance for Carrie. It must have been stifling to have to stand relatively still for the dress effects while belting out an emotional song with passion.

    Girl has some serious pipes.

  • Keyera Mullins

I love how Carrie doesn’t even have to move & still put on the best show of the night. Her voice is one in a million. If you are a true performer you don’t have to run all over the stage and have back up dancers. She proved tonight that you can put on an amazing performance with just having an amazing voice. Go Carrie!

LUCIE: Did the lights on her dress have any significance for the song 2 Black Cadillac or was it only for show?

The images were meant to go along with the lyrics. I believe the initial pattern on the dress was a representation of two women merging into one (I guess one mind). There were roses on the dress during the line in the song about each woman laying a rose down (on the guy’s grave). The butterflies at the end were symbolic of souls going to purgatory, because there was a body count after the two songs Carrie sang. I’d have to watch again but those are some of images on the dress. What started out a little distracting was actually really well done I thought.

Listening: Blown Away did not work slowed down she tried to make it more dramatic and that messed it up. It stripped away all the passion of the song.

I don’t think I could disagree with this any more. I’ve come to really appreciate the studio version but I loved the reworking of the melody and the way Carrie’s voice was brimming with pain and anguish in the acoustic clip of the song. I thought it was really powerful to give more emphasis of an abuse victim’s emotional baggage. I would’ve been happy if Carrie’d then kicked into a more driving, orchestral finish of Blown Away and I hope we get that full version someday. But, I was also good with her moving into Two Black Cadillacs, which is a more assertive revenge song and lent itself into its own dramatic, musical, and visual progression. I’m glad Carrie got to promote her current single and her nominated one, and the moods of the 2 songs bled into each other really well, and Carrie absolutely slayed vocally, not just from a technical standpoint but from an emotional one as well.

It’s official: Carrie has become an artist. What a performance.

What made that an “artists” performance?  She didn’t sing any different than she usually does, which is full tilt vocal chord ripping belting.

I really wish she’d learn how to do something subtle instead of beating us over the head with her power all the time.

The dress was cool but distracting.  I feel artists who can really sing shouldn’t use those “tricks”.  Rihanna, who isn’t known for her vocals outshone Carrie just by standing there and singing a beautiful song.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1638805698 Jason Scott

Uh. Did you even pay attention? She changed the melody of BA quite a bit from the original, and she was not belting the entire thing. She is an artist. She might not be your cup of tea, but that does not take away from her artistry.

  • durbesque

Carrie was certainly emotionally involved.  I don’t follow her, so I don’t know the lyrics, and had no idea what she was singing about.  The dress was fascinating… and her voice is a marvel…like listening to a sax.

  • mtlfan2

we definitly have 2 idol queens :)
that was so good – i like especially the ‘Blown Away’ song
Dress was stunning — the monarch butterfly effect toward the end was so pretty!!

  • hoosiermama2

I’m really curious how, technically, they did the effects on her dress. Anybody know? It was really cool, but for me, I was watching the dress more than listening to her sing. Still, a great performance!

ETA: Nevermind–I see an explanation in the headlines thread.

Windmill Thanks for your reply. Very interesting. I will watch the video again.

I think she just always comes across as trying to prove she’s the best singer out there…she has one volume and it’s 11.

  • arkboy

In an interview after the performance she said that she was standing barefoot on apple crates, but they were nice enough to give her some Dr. Shoals for padding. I am in constant awe at how good this girl is & yet we see some folks that are always going to hunt out the dark cloud that goes with the silver lining.

  • standtotheright

    …she has one volume and it’s 11.

Then the vocals in the Blown Away segment would have completely overpowered the two acoustic guitars, which they did not. I heard them quite clearly.

  • http://www.fatladysings.us/ TFLS

I really liked this.  For me, it was one of the best performances of the night (in a night of truly stellar performances).  She just keeps getting better and better.

  • Christopher Auyeung

Rihanna “outshining” Carrie is certainly a matter of opinion. I couldn’t disagree more. I agree that artists who can really sing don’t NEED those tricks, but I think that once someone has already proven their vocal prowess, having a beautifully crafted and creatively imagined overall performance only adds to the artist’s singing. Carrie is already widely recognized by people in the industry as a phenomenal singer. She doesn’t need to strip down her performances to prove that to anyone unless she wants to.

  • tibitibis

Carrie can sing live, period. She did GREAT ! nobody can deny the power of her beautiful voice …. then the dress extravaganza is a luxury she can and has the right to afford especially in the GRAMMY’S and after all she already accomplished on her career ;) GO CARRIE!

  • parisianwear dgena

this concept is the Franck Sorbier concept haute couture last year, see http://www.canal-luxe.org/?p=15632 very bad for the american designer. !!!!

  • http://twitter.com/YakkityYaks YakkityYaks

You 100% and totally discredited your whole post when you said Rihanna outshone Carrie. Everything else you tried to illustrate doesn’t even matter anymore. That makes your post laughable. Carrie, with a sore throat and hoarse voice, can sound better than RiRi any day.
