Carly Rae Jepsen – Call Me Maybe – Late Night with Jimmy Fallon (VIDEO)

Look at you, Carly Rae Jepsen, 3rd place winner of Canadian Idol back in 2007. Your song, “Call Me Maybe” is number #1, not only on iTunes, but on the Billboard Digital tracks and Hot Singles Sales charts! And it’s #2 on the Hot 100!  It’s never too late for a reality show graduate to finally hit it big.

Canadian Idol has since been cancelled, but Carly Rae continues to rock on! Heh.

Carly performed her hit last night on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Check it out below.

Check out Carly Rae, Jimmy and the Roots performing “Call Me Maybe” on classroom instruments. I like this version better!

Wasn’t she the Haley Scarnato of CI that year? I’m disappointed Theo Tams didn’t do better, I like his voice and his album

Don’t care for her wimpy little girl voice.

OMG she sounded terrible here.  This is the perfect example of how a catchy song means everything.  Voice means nothing when it comes down to it.

Weren’t there many Haley Scarnato-types on Canadian Idol? LOL. I fucking hated that show and how terrible damn near everybody was. Could barely watched it. Eva Avila should have been a star, that girl could SANG! She, as well as Greg Neufield, Rob James, and Gary Beals were the only ones I liked from that crappy show. And once that Ryan dude beat Gary in season 2, I knew it was a massive joke of a show.

    Unfortunately. :(

Times like this I miss Amy Winehouse and Whitney, wish Lauren Hill and D’Angelo would come back, there are more Black Keys and Grace Potters, and wish Melanie Fiona and Jazmine Sullivan was more popular, and thankful for Adele and Bruno Mars.

This is the reason I can’t listen to pop radio.

Perfect example of a catchy hit song. Lyrics + music +voice = all blend well.

2 words – Kalan Porter.  Best the show had and one of the best singers in Canada, even now.

The 2nd video with Jimmy Fallon, Carly Rae, and the Roots was so cute!  I love Jimmy Fallon!!!!!   Anyway I love Call me Maybe and I think it suits Carly Rae’s voice.

Naw, never could get into him either. Sorry.

I didn’t think she sounded that bad at all. I liked it. That song is so darn popular anyway that (generally) people are going to love the performance as long as it sounds anything like the original.

This song is so crap that I can completely understand why it’s on the top of the charts. Unfortunately for Carly, Stefano’s song “I’m On a Roll” is coming to take over her place.

Call me Maybe is a way way way better song than Stefano’s single.

All I know is my daughter and all her various college graduate friends, who normally exhibit good taste in music, think this song is the bomb. It was even mentioned in her Commencement ceremony. And these are pre-med students and engineers we’re talking about here.  So who knows? I guess it’s just a fun cutesy little ditty that caught on. No accounting for it.

Gotta love Jimmy Fallon though.  He really IS the bomb.

I really like Eva Avila’s voice and was hoping she would break big.  I am enjoying Carly Rae’s happy little song and cute video and I hope she is having a great time with this lightening in a bottle moment.  BTW NPR will have an interview with her on one of their weekend shows and they have a cover of the song with many of their host and reporters doing a dramatic reading up on their website, funny stuff.

I don’t spend much time listening to pop radio, but I have to admit when I hear this song I kind of jump up and down in my car seat. It’s damn catchy and cute. And hey, what girl doesn’t relate to all the drama of “will he call or won’t he”.

Gad. I’m really glad I don’t have that in my life anymore.

I like this song as I think it is very catchy and cute. Nice to see someone that was on Canadian Idol in 2007 have some success. But Carly Rae also signed to Schoolboy Records, the label run by Justin Bieber’s manager Scooter Braun in 2012. Bieber and his friends really pushed this song.  I wonder if it would have been such a huge pop hit without their support. I kind of doubt it.

There is no doubt that Bieber helped to push the song in the US, but it was already a hit in Canada without him.

And, “Call me Maybe” is already more successful on Pop radio than anything Bieber has ever put out, so the song’s success can’t all be him.

There are tonnes of great songs out there that never become hits because they never get the exposure. There can be a lot of luck in getting your first hit.

“There are tonnes of great songs out there that never become hits because they never get the exposure. There can be a lot of luck in getting your first hit.”
I think this song is so much of an ear-worm that you just need to hear it once or twice to get hooked.  I learned about it from the video which was covered on a couple of gay websites.  And it has been featured on different NPR shows at first because of the official video and then because of the fan videos so I do not think we can give Bieber all of the credit.

I would actually purchase the classroom instruments version, no lie.

  • http://twitter.com/KWOnlyDreaming Karen W.

Ha Ha!  I would purchase the classroom instruments version too!  Love how Jimmy Fallon sings along with Carly Rae!

I’m obsesssed with the second version. The Roots are hilariious. Questlove is using his afro pick  as an instrument, bongo guy’s head keeping the beat. Love this so much.

As far as Carly Rae, I think she could have just a big of a hit if she re-released the song Bucket from her old album. This was one of my summer jams on 2009, just as addictive as Call Me Maybe! http://youtu.be/evXtrZrdQ3o

Still watching the second Call Me Maybe with the Roots,  At 2:38 Questlove goes to play the recorder, but has it backwards lol. The guy behind him also plays the recoder, but the note is so off thar Carly Rae laughs.

    I said I was obsessed :)

I do think that Carly Rae is very talented. It is good to see Scooter Braun signing and supporting someone that can sing as opposed to JB who IMO can’t. lol Carly is opening for Bieber on his tour this year. Watch the number of her twitter followers increase by a huge amount.
