Happy to see some good bullets on the country charts for the idols.

  • Anonymous

HI, I don’t completely understand the charts.  How can Kelly get plus 76 spins but a – 43 bullet?  That just seems like a really big disconnect.

Also, it looks as Daughtry, Kelly (on one song) and Adam all had decrease in spins yesterday on the Canadian HAC. I wonder if that is temporary due to some programming, or they are starting to slide.

Nice updates for James, Adam and Kelly on HAC and Clay is moving up AC.

  • Valentin432

The increase in spins is -43 compared to last week’s.

It means that the song isn’t increasing its spins at the same rate as it was last week.
For the week tough, Kelly has a +1158 bullet.

  • Anonymous

Ah so it could still be increasing spins, but just not as much as the week before.   I thought that number meant it had a loss of spins  from the previous week.

Am I reading this wrong–or did Scotty just hit Billboard Top 20 for country?

Yay!! Go, Adam, go!! :) With 2 songs above him dropping fast, we should have some nice updates in a few days. But then there is gap to catch up to after that!

Anyone know where Scotty’s ILYTB topped off at on the country charts?

    ETA: Answered my own question….#15

  • Indigobunting

I hope CJ song hangs in there; his spin updates have been running low the past couple of weeks.  His album is out March 20 !  I was thinking the label was planning that the song would still be on the charts then (It is too late to put out another single to drive the album when it debuts), but perhaps they are planning an Idol spot!  Fingers crossed-competition is fierce with Adam, Kelly, Carrie, Kellie, Kris, Scotty, Lauren…….

  • LVD

Happy to see some good bullets on the country charts for the idols.

Yes indeed! The country charts has been very tough this pass week, it has  practically started to look like the beginning of the christmas freeze all over again.

  • http://twitter.com/ctryfan1980 Jonathan

    http://www.billboard.com/#/charts/country-songs

The 2/4 chart was pulished on Billboard.com today and it has #23 for the song. I think MJ got the #20 number wrong.

ILYTB topped off at 15…can’t recall if that was Mediabase or Billboard or both…

  • http://twitter.com/ctryfan1980 Jonathan

    #15

  • http://twitter.com/ctryfan1980 Jonathan

Next week, 3 or 4 songs are due to drop off cause they are currently on their final week after peaking.  So that means all the songs on the chart will shift up at least 3 or 4 spots.  Scotty should jump from 23 to 19/20 on the 2/11 Chart.
On the Mediabase chart, TTWG is already #21, so that chart he should be 17/18 next week.
He is gaining more spins than ever before and TTWG seems to be really taking off at radio finally!

  • http://twitter.com/ALIXAVIER lover of divas

Wow, Kelly is doing great. Dare I even say it, but could “What doesn’t Kill you (Stronger) go #1?

By the looks of things, at a minimum sales of “Stronger” the albumshould be on par with “All I Ever Wanted.”

THis success of this single, plus the super bowl performance and continue excellent reviews of her concerts should move the album to about 600,000-700,000 copies. Another third single could carry it to 800,000-900,000 (which is about where All I Ever Wanted, topped out). Of course I am hoping for this album to go platinum, but knowing that it won’t be selling less than her last album, is a good sign for Kelly.

Gold-certified album that is still in the billboard top 20.

Single #2 in the billboard hot 100 top 10, certified gold, will go platinum.

Single #1 top 10, and certified platinum. We have the grammys, and the super bowl! SOoo excited! Kelly is still hanging in there a decade later.

The country chart has been really difficult these past two weeks especially. There are songs staying on the chart, that could have gone recurrent already and there has not been a lot of recurrents, on top of that a lot of big artists has released new singles that keeps on passing everyone in the bottom half of the chart.

I think BNA will definitively try to make this song stick around and enter the top 30 before his album, he does have an ad on the daily Aircheck website, and he did get 5 adds this week. I think BNA will try, if they will succeed is another matter entirely.

It is frustrating that Casey’s AI hasn’t grown this week, and he has been flat on Billboard for two weeks in a row. But if you look at the chart as a whole most of the songs have seen very low increases or no increases these past two weeks, and compared to some around him he is actually holding up better then a lot of people around him. But who knows what might happen things are a bit unpredictable right now, and his song has been on chart for a long time. However there is a very good window of opportunity for the song to really move forward in the next two weeks.

As for an idol performance. LOL
I dont see that happening! Atleast he is performing at the Opry tonight.

  • Mike M

We’re blessed to have several people around here who understand the workings of the Billboard and Mediabase charts. I’m learning but I always seem to have more questions than answers about this stuff. I have a question about the Mediabase country charts for Windmills, Kirsten, Pam or any of you who have some input.

First of all, Cumulus has a ridiculous amount of influence on the Mediabase country chart. I counted 21 Cumulus stations among the 140 monitored stations. Second, I noticed that none of those stations have added Scotty’s song, and I don’t think any of them have added Lauren. Surely if Cumulus program directors were allowed to make decisions on their own, a couple of them would have added these songs by now, especially Scotty’s, which has been added by all but 27 of the monitored stations (21 of those the Cumulus group). This tells me it’s a corporate decision not to play the songs. Is this normal treatment of Idols or does it reflect more on their feelings about Scotty and Lauren?

I haven’t researched how Cumulus normally handles adds, but it seems if it is normally handled at the corporate level, this could open a real can of worms. For one thing, it opens the door for influence peddling for the Scott Borchettas of the world who could find their way into corporate headquarters and, using whatever magic formula they carry in with them, secure adds from about 15 percent of the Mediabase country chart in one swoop. On the other hand, if the poobah at Cumulus takes a disliking to a song for whatever reason, he can pretty much block it from reaching it’s potential.

Maybe I’m making too big a deal of this. Maybe it’s just the way it has always worked. I think a big part of the problem is with Mediabase for allowing any one corporation to become so powerful. I know we live in a world where big corporations rule radio (more’s the pity) but it still seems Mediabase has compromised its product by giving one company so much influence. Of course, there’s probably some financial concern that benefits Mediabase in this relationship.

(For the Record: I like Lauren and Scotty, but I’m not saying either song deserves to be added by every station. I just find the whole Cumulus situation interesting)

  • Anonymous

    Kelly Clarkson:
    Stronger: Hot 100 8 (21); Hot Airplay 44 (71); Adult Top 40 16 (21); Digital Tracks 3 (10); Dance Club 24 (40); 200 40 (48);

The Dance Club remix was made by the same company that remixed Kris Allen’s song Vision of Love.  Hopefully that song will also do well on this chart, and all of the others.

  • Anonymous

The team that did the Kelly remix were remixing a different Kris song. They were from Canada. Not sure of the title but it could be “Jump Around”. The dj did not answer the question on the title directly. The VOL dj/producers were from Finland.

  • Kirsten

The 2/4 chart was pulished on Billboard.com today and it has #23 for the song. I think MJ got the #20 number wrong.

Yes. Sorry. That was a typo. Thanks for catching it. It’s fixed now. Sorry for the confusion it caused.

  • Kirsten

First of all, Cumulus has a ridiculous amount of influence on the Mediabase country chart

One can say that about all the big media conglomerates. The gatekeepers to music have been whittled done to a small number of companies that wield a lot of power. Best to make nice.

Cumulus does seem to focus a great deal of power in head office. The Adam fans can provide chapter and verse on their complaints about the company. That Scotty and Adam are both facing resistance from the company is interesting.

Surely if Cumulus program directors were allowed to make decisions on
their own, a couple of them would have added these songs by now,

What is interesting is if you look at the stations that haven’t added TTWG, four of the five biggest spinners are from Cumulus. The station in SLC played the song 17 times in the previous week. It’s nice to get adds, but it is the spins that count.

. For one thing, it opens the door for influence peddling for the Scott
Borchettas of the world who could find their way into corporate
headquarters and, using whatever magic formula they carry in with them,
secure adds from about 15 percent of the Mediabase country chart in one
    swoop.

Yes, and that does happen at every station. Scott is definitely quite the airplay Ninja when it comes to convincing just the right stations to play the songs at just the right time. He can get his acts to the top of the Mediabase chart even when they have both fewer spins and less AI than songs below them on the chart. How he does it is a mystery.

  • LVD

First of all, Cumulus has a ridiculous amount of influence on the Mediabase country chart. I counted 21 Cumulus stations among the 140 monitored stations. This tells me it’s a corporate decision not to play the songs. Is this normal treatment of Idols or does it reflect more on their feelings about Scotty and Lauren?

I dont think it is reflection on Scotty and Lauren at all. Im my personal opinion Cumulus is really a bit of a disgrace in general. They dont add anyone, they basically only wait until a song has reached the top 20 before they start playing a song, or they only play the big artists. As of right now there is songs in the top 20, that they aren’t even playing.

There could be a few recurrents on Billboard, David Nail (definitively), Edens Edge, Sara Evans & Faith Hill (very likely).
But there will only be one recurrent on Mediabase (David Nail).

What is interesting is if you look at the stations that haven’t added TTWG, four of the five biggest spinners are from Cumulus. The station in SLC played the song 17 times in the previous week. It’s nice to get adds, but it is the spins that count.

That’s really interesting. Seems maybe some of the program directors are finding a way around the corporate stranglehold. You’re absolutely right. It’s all about spins. A station that plays the song 17 times should be an auto add, so I assume the station blocked it. Doesn’t matter, though, as long as they keep playing it.

    Thanks for your input, Kirsten.

so Amazon.com has “Respect” on sale for Melanie Amaro. I really hope this is just something she’s doing for the Pepsi commercial, and that it isn’t her first single. Because, seriously — covering an iconic R&B song as your 1st single? Not a good career move, in my opinion.

Thanks. That’s a disturbing way to do business. And, considering that description, it’s even more troubling that they have so much influence. Sounds like they aren’t even fully taking part in the process that Mediabase sets forth to create its chart.

It has occurred to me more than once that I pay too much attention to Mediabase, but the simple fact is, their information is a lot more accessible on a daily basis than Billboard’s unless you’re willing to shell out a pretty hefty sum to subscribe at Billboard. I’m not willing.

ETA: When Cumulus does add songs, do they normally do it for all the stations at one time?

  • Taro

What you said about the Cumulus stations not adding Scotty / Lauren songs intrigued me so I did a random check. I found 4 Cumulus stations that were spinning TTWG (KRST-22 spins, KUBL-15 spins, KATM-17 spins, KIZN-11 spins). However I have no idea whether those stations added TTWG though those spins aren’t too shabby.

Which leads me to this burning question I have, what is the meaning of having a station add a song versus just giving it spins? How about auto-adds? Would love to finally understand all of this …..

When Cumulus does add songs, do they normally do it for all the stations at one time?

They do all of their adds from headquarters, so one person adds for all of their stations. They have a set lists of songs all their stations can add from, a radio stations has to apply for special permission if they want to add something that is not on the general list. But in reality since the merger occurred they haven’t done any adds really, so they are actually ignoring the Mediabase system.

Cumuulus shows no creativity or originality, that is what irritates me most about them. Other radio stations, even Clear Channel stations, will often play local artists or they will start playing new artists early on. With Cumulus there just seems to be a lazy approach to originality.

The team that did the Kelly remix were remixing a different Kris song. They were from Canada. Not sure of the title but it could be “Jump Around”. The dj did not answer the question on the title directly. The VOL dj/producers were from Finland.

I know that they weren’t the same guys, but but I thought it was the same company.  Weren’t both tweets, the one about Stronger, and the one about VOL sent out by the same guy?

It doesn’t matter at the end of the day, a spins is a spin whether it is from an added station or not. You get an auto add when a song is played 7 times during the same week. Stations can block auto adds, but often it seems like the system just dont pick up auto adds.
I guess a manual add is just more of an official/ open guarantee or commitment that the station will play the song on a regular, continued basis.

Mike M: Kirsten and LVD have covered a lot of it. I’d add historically that Cumulus is the media group that got itself the reprimand by a bipartisan Senate panel for banning the Dixie Chicks from being played on any of their country radio stations after “The Incident”, no matter what local research said.

I recently read a blog about how Billboard and Aircheck/Mediabase are looking to redo how they count adds, especially because more and more, you’ve got Clear Channel Premium Choice-type programming taking over segments at more and more stations (Premium Choice is a block of programmed songs determined based on research where you can insert localized voice tracks from local DJs) just like Cumulus has a set of approved playlists (also based on research) it “recommends” to its stations. It sounds like there’s recognition that there’s a difference between a syndicated “network” spin and a spin by a local DJ.

I don’t really know how this would all work but the blog seemed to say this would lead to even fewer stations being counted as reporters, possibly leading to an even tougher road for new acts to make it up the charts. It’ll be interesting seeing how it’s worked out. The charts are definitely less interesting to follow when you know there’s a lot less local station independence. But, they still signify what’s being played and they affect label decisions about when to release stuff so they obviously matter.

LVD: There could be a few recurrents on Billboard, David Nail (definitively), Edens Edge, Sara Evans & Faith Hill (very likely).
But there will only be one recurrent on Mediabase (David Nail).

That’s right. I think Scotty’s TTWG has a solid chance at making t20 Billboard with David Nail out, Eden’s Edge likely to go (-864k in this morning’s update, ouch!), and possibly Sara. TTWG should make t20 Mediabase with David Nail going recurrent and has 2 days to make up an 830+ point gap with Eden’s Edge if it wants to finish the week at #19. I don’t see that happening but TTWG should pass Eden’s Edge next week anyway.

CaseyJ should make Billboard t30 if Sara goes along with David Nail, Eden’s Edge, and Faith but Zac Brown Band’s No Hurry is a song to watch out for, if not this week then definitely next week. But Mediabase t30 is the one that affects countdown airplay and that’ll take a little longer to achieve. I do think LDCIAN is going to make t30 eventually and BNA’s going to stick with it through the album release. It seems like more stations are getting on board and will eventually jump in with enough airplay to make t30 happen. I’m not sure about t20 but that’s a long way down the road anyway.

Lauren’s picked up well after a weak 1st half of the week.

  • Taro

Thanks for the explanation. So the best thing to get is a spin that gives a good AI played on a regular, continued basis. Got it!

  • Mike M

Which leads me to this burning question I have, what is the meaning of having a station add a song versus just giving it spins? How about auto-adds? Would love to finally understand all of this …..

Labels covet adds because adding the song to the official playlist is seen as a commitment from the station to play the song. However, adding the song to the playlist does not commit the station to play it a certain number of times. It is much better for the artist if the station plays the song 20 times without officially adding it to the playlist than if it does add it to the playlist but plays it only five times.

The actual number of adds is not figured into the charts by either Billboard or Mediabase, but the resulting spins and Audience Impressions (AI) are used in the Mediabase chart. Billboard’s chart goes strictly by AI, which is the number of people actually hearing the song.

Adds are also important to the labels in promotional campaigns to the industry and to other radio stations who they are shopping the song to.

Hope I haven’t just made it more confusing for you.

ETA: Thanks to Windmills, Kirsten and LVD for your input. I understand it better now but can’t say I find it very comforting. Does Billboard also have certain corporations that dominate its charts? I don’t even know how many stations Billboard uses to produce its country chart.

It looks like both groups have the same management company,
Andon Artist Management.  The tweets came from management company talking about the Kris & Kelly tracks (DJProject46)  and then the link to VOL track (Maison & Dragen).

Adele is amazing – she’s a selling machine.  It’s good to see pure talent rewarded in this day and age of manufactured Disney kids.  She has excellent vocals, but it’s her songwriting skills, and emotional delivery that really define her imo.

I guess I’ve been confused, too…so a spin counts toward Mediabase and Billboard even if the radio station hasn’t officially added it?  Interesting…

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/NBACS2XHDEHKIEDHSUMSQYMKHQ tap

Kelly is fantastic.  I think you’re right – she very well could go #1 top 10.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/NBACS2XHDEHKIEDHSUMSQYMKHQ tap

I think a big part of the problem is with Mediabase for allowing any one corporation to become so powerful. I know we live in a world where big corporations rule radio (more’s the pity)

Big corporate interests have changed industries across the board.  That huge influence is exactly the same situation as Barnes and Nobel in the retail end of the publishing channel.  It’s driven out the independent booksellers and given readers less options.  That minimizes their losses/maximizes their profits, but sucks for the consumer.  Same is true in radio right now.  As long as corporations are given unlimited power by congress this will continue to be the case.

That’s why I find it amazing that an artist like Adam has managed to break through that wall.  it’s tremendously unlikely for any new artist/author to, to be honest, so all the more impressive when it happens.

They may have banned them on all of the stations that they own, because they were taken off the playlist on my locally owned Cumulus pop stations.

That company also has some issues with R&B and hip-hop music.  My station used to lean heavily in that direction, but when Cumulus purchased the station, they made it more HAC and rock based, which hurt the ratings.  I read on All Access that this is what they did with all of their pop stations.  They don’t care that some songs work better in some markets, but not in others.

i get so tired of KSCS and KPLX here they will not play TTWG except for countdown shows, also Cody Alan sometimes will play TTWG not much, so it sounds like he(Cody) can’t play more of TTWG because both of those stations are cumuulus imo

I find it fascinating that Kelly, Carrie, and Daughtry have such a sustaining power to remain on the iTune chart after years their albums are released. Other idols alumni can have a mega hit, decent size hit, a blip, but all seem to disappear from the chart after a while. How old are “Breakaway” and “Daughtry”? One of the reasons to justify calling these three the most successful artists Idol produced to me.

    Random fun fact:
I just peeked in to Smooth Jazz chart, and  Adele is charting there at number 7 with Someone Like You and number 23 with Set Fire To The Rain.
    Lol. She is everywhere!

It’s because Daughtry, Some Hearts, and Breakaway all had multiple singles that were released, and that are still getting airplay today. Some of the other alums had hits, but they aren’t in genres where songs receive a lot of recurrent play, or their songs just aren’t getting played a lot anymore.

We have 2 country radio stations here and I have listened to one of them for years – they don’t play Scotty – make fun of him constantly.  I checked the website of the other one and guess what they play Scotty a couple of times during the day.  This station is also up for the radio station of the year at the CMA – their morning duo is up for best dj (or whatever you call them).Glad I check and I have changed radio stations
