Sony may have felt like they were forced to sign some runners up, but it was probably more like they felt they could make a quick dollar off of them.  It’s not like they went all out to find music for or promote people like Crystal, Blake Lewis, Diana DeGarmo, Katherine McPhee, Bo Bice, etc., in most cases, they had to work with the same group of writers as the winners.

I think that labels are obligated to sign Idol runner-ups, although contracts are not the same.

I wasn’t just referring to 1st runner ups, but others as well (2nd, 3rd, ect). You can’t tell me Sony was forced to sign Daughtry or that Interscope was forced to sign Haley.

“Forced to sign” sounds like the Label didn’t freely enter into a contract – or even know what they were signing.

They are obligated by contract to the winner. 19E has all the finalists under contract – if there is another finalist that the label wants to sign, they have first dibs, until and unless that contract expires – or 19E releases the finalist.

The Label takes the gamble on the winner – but they are not “forced” to sign anyone else.

That’s the way I’ve always understood the deal.

They aren’t.  That information came out over the summer, when it was revealed that the current contract calls for Interscope to offer the first runner up a development deal with one song, or a record contract.

I think that what the Sony contract did say is that if the labels were going to sign the runners up that they had to be guaranteed a certain amount in their advance, but the only people who Sony had to sign were the winners.
