Pia and Haley have almost the same amount of apperances on the tour, so why are we complaining about Pia?

Easy! Pia finished NINTH – Haley finished THIRD! There’s a reason for that – Pia didn’t have the votes to go farther and Haley did. Usually a 9th place finisher doesn’t get quite as much stage time as those who outlast him/her.

And certainly not as much as those who make it to the Final 3.

Just looking at previous tours and the number of songs the #9 position gets shows how screwed up this format is.

I’m looking at the song list. Wow. This tour is screwed up.

Totally random, but I just came across this and did a weighted sum of each contestant’s appearances. That is, if they performed a solo, that counts as one appearance, a duet counts as .5, a trio counts as .333, etc. Taking each sum and dividing by 31 (the total number of performances), you get a percentage that’s a decent metric for “featuredness.” Here are the results:

    PT: 13.2%
    LA: 12.4%
    SM: 12.2%
    HR: 12.1%
    CA: 9.3%
    TM: 8.4%
    SL: 8.3%
    JD: 7.7%
    NA: 6.6%
    JL: 5.3%
    PM: 4.5%

The individual girls average 10.5% to the guys’ 7.9%, but the balance between girls and boys as groups overall is fairly even, with the girls ahead only about 53% to 47%.

If we use this range of outcomes as a rough approximation of what the expected “featuredness” should be for a contestant finishing in n-th position should be (i.e., we would expect the winner to get 13.2%, the 11th place finisher to get 4.5%, etc), we can compare a contestant’s actual results to their expectation and create a “screwed-ness” index (from least to most screwed):

    PT: +6.6%
    TM: +3.5%
    NA: +1.7%
    CA: +1.0%
    LA: no diff
    SL: no diff
    HR: -0.1%
    SM: -1.0%
    PM: -3.2%
    JL: -4.0%
    JD: -4.4%

Bottom line, James, Jacob and Paul get screwed the most, to the benefit of Pia and Thia.

I’m so glad I didn’t go to the Idol tour this year. Although I liked several of the contestants, I didn’t like Pia at all–she was my least favorite.
