The re-broadcast of   the Season 8 American Idol Top 13 performance show featuring the music of Michael Jackson will be broadcast on FOX tonight at 8 pm.

It starts here on the east coast at 8 PM ET. I’m starting a post for those of you who are watching tonight and want to chat.   I’m also re-uploading some….stuff. shhh….   I’ll update this post later.

Also, in case you missed it, and you might have–my site was down for a good part of yesterday afternoon.   Nigel Lythgoe twittered about his plans for an all-Michael Jackson special for So You Think You Can Dance.   Read all about it HERE.

  • Duke

Yes! its like getting a fix all over again…

  • KrazeeK120

I bet Anoop is THRILLED that this is being re-broadcast.

  • Sunn

Black & White is the performance that solidified Adam n my mind as a staaaah! It remains to be one of my favourites of the season. The Itunes audio is pretty good as well, though the ending is wonky for some unfathomable reason.

Allison’s performance of “Give Into me” one of my favourite all time Michael songs left me cold that night. I’m a fan of Allison just not that performance.

The rest were all meh imo, Anoop’s Beat It being in a league all it’s own of Fail. I remember being let down by the night but for Adam’s 3 minutes on stage.

All in all, I think this re-run will be a good thing for Adam.

  • Calliope

At this point originally I was so excited that Megan made it through on a Wildcard as she was my favorite. I was also excited for Anoop. haha

  • Gigi3

    Ha, ha- poor Anoop.

  • hollygo9

oh yes, Kris, I remember the time when we fell in love

  • girlygirl

I loved Adam’s performance when he did this live on Top 13 week. But didn’t he say in some interview after the finale that he didn’t like the vocals on B&W…that he thought he missed a bunch of notes?

Everyone’s always their own worst critic.

Still 3 hours before I can see this re-broadcast. Going to record it…since I didn’t do that for any shows this year (except the finale – gah. Dumb. Now I have to wait until they get around to AI8 on AI Rewind)

  • Squirrely

I never saw this episode, I only watched Adam’s in the archives.

Lil wasn’t all that impressive to me.

I can’t wait to see Anoop I hear such things about it – unfortunately not good things.

  • Jx223

I think that Danny, Allison, Matt, and Alexis had the best performances on MJ night.

  • SpenserJ

I just cannot willingly watch Scott & Danny again under any circumstances. So, I think I’ll DVR this for watching later with my FF button engaged.

Didn’t Matt bust out the falshitto again on this night too?

  • Sunn

why are thy running the judges’ comments? I’m watching a live stream hoping they would have edited the judges out and added some MJ clips in their place.

this is a poor and lazy tribute from Fox. Smacks more of an opportunistic advertising for the AI tour than an MJ tribute.

  • http://randomizeme.wordpress.com arca

why are thy running the judges’ comments?

Oh, so it really is just a re-run? I was hoping that they’d edit it a bit to add more MJ stuff and yes, take away the judges …

  • Winks8

Boy that was funny watching the opeing again. I almost had forgotten that the judges did the walk-in from the stage.

Also, they were sure on the Lil-wagon at first weren’t they? In my opinion she didn’t change much during the show but the judges stopped the love finally. Did you notice Kara’s comment about how she hopes we hear Lil on the radio?

Girlygirl I remember Adam commenting about his performance. He said he thought it was kind of shouty. It may have been… but to me that style works with Black or White. More memorable than his vocal though was how he really used the whole stage and he seemed so comfortable. And then the crowd going wild was cool too. Even though I’ve watched it a million times, It’s going to be fun to see it in context.

Yikes, Scott is on right now. (Hmmm, remembering back to Randy’s comment at the beginning of the show about how any of these 13 could probably win the contest.)

  • xuziqueue

I agree, Sunn. I would like instead to see real MJ tributes spliced into this episode.

  • Squirrely

OHMYGOSH – Not impressed so far, I have never heard the song Scot sang.

  • NOLA

I’m not impressed. If they truly wanted to do a memorial, they would have simply shown the performances…not the whole damn show.

This is nothing more than a rerun. Very tacky, Idol.

  • xuziqueue

Anyone remember when Adam appears? I will tune back in then.

  • Duke

    Paula’s Norway comment!!!!!! AHHHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAH!!!!

  • nuttin2lose

I really liked lil that day. I think she was good. maybe she shld have sang more guys songs instead of the big diva songs. she might have gone further.

  • Squirrely

****Anyone remember when Adam appears? I will tune back in then.***

I’m with you, I can do without the Paula and Simon bickering

  • Pam

Honestly, color me unsurprised that they didn’t inject an MJ tribute here. I didn’t think they would.

  • Winks8

OK, now this is funny. I remember in an interview Simon saying how he loved to tell Paula random “facts” prior to the live show (that were true and sometimes not true) that she might then mention during the live show.

Just now witnessing Paula say to Simon about Scott’s song “You told me that was the number one song in Norway… gave me a scout’s honor” and Simon acting like she was crazy… but with an evil grin. That has to be one of the little tricks he played on her. He was loving it. (And Norway? That is random.)

  • http://www.twitter.com/sarahruth3 Sarah

I just cannot willingly watch Scott & Danny again under any circumstances. So, I think I’ll DVR this for watching later with my FF button engaged.

I skipped Scott, but am so far planning to watch Danny. Until it makes me too uncomfortable. I wonder, in what way does PYT “inspire” people?

Didn’t Matt bust out the falshitto again on this night too?

I think this is the night that the term “falshitto” was first trademarked. LOL.

ETA: Wow. Danny was worse than I remembered. Heh.

  • maracaibo

Matt did awesome with “Human Nature”.
I loves that performance, is one of my favorites from him so I am looking forward to that.

  • terps

What I’ve realized, how much I hate Danny and I still can’t believe Kris won

  • AC

I remember thinking that my favorite MJ song is Remember The Time and I really wanted someone to sing and that’s how it cemented my love for Kris Allen. haha.

I think Adam said that he thought that this kind of performance would really impress people (not those exact words) but it was the slower performances without all the runs that people really liked which surprised him.

  • Sunn

I think this is the night that the term ‘falshitto’ was first trademarked. LOL.

    ROFLMAO.

I just caught the last 2 secs of Gokey… Talk about shouty!

  • GeminiDolly

Im so giddy to see Adam’s performance again. He owned that stage like a stah!!

  • GeminiDolly

    Michael..zZZzzzzzzz

  • Sunn

I suddenly don’t feel too bad about missing the tour. Even the ever stellar Adam wouldn’t compensate for my sitting through Michael, Lil, Gokey, Scott, Megan and Matt.

  • Winks8

Adam performs 3rd from the last (If I remember right) It’s definitely later in the show.

  • Dr. Tracey

Michael Sarver sounded worse than I remember.

This is half arsed, I don’t know why they are showing the judges comments, honestly. They could have shown David Cook’s Billy Jean and other previous seasons contestants performing MJ songs instead of the irrelevant judges crap.

  • girlygirl

I haven’t seen ths re-run yet, but I think this episode showed how Adam pretty much was great from Day One while Kris steadily improved throughout the season. If I remember correctly, his “Remember the Time” was enthusiastic but a little pitchy.

Oh and we get to hear Simon tell Kris that he shouldn’t have brought out the wife so early in the season – yay…

  • Adamdebomb

Jasmine is on now-beautiful girl, but ouch.

Danny-don’t like him on a personal level, but when he is good he is good, and he was good here. Danny does have a wonderful rich voice, and he should be signed somewhere.

    I confess, I’m waiting for Adam….

  • Susan M.

I think Adam said that he thought that this kind of performance would really impress people (not those exact words) but it was the slower performances without all the runs that people really liked which surprised him.

It sure impressed the hell out of me. I was a goner after watching that performance. (Hadn’t seen his audition or Hollywood week.) I’ve watched “BoW,” let’s just say, “many” times and I still don’t know what he means when he said it wasn’t great vocally. I also have no clue of what Simon meant when he said there were parts of “Satisfaction” that were unbelievably bad.

  • nuttin2lose

well i just noticed they cut out the phone numbers. so i guess they were not too lazy. lol

  • Cindij

looked up an old live blog last week and they show Adam is on at 9:37pm
    hope it is right

  • GeminiDolly

    Kris and Allison next..YAY

  • flicker

I’ve been hearing the word falshitto for years….it wasn’t coined for Matt.

I’ve seen it used lots on VFTW and Sucks.

  • ppwars

When Allison comes up. Listen closely to Ryans intro seconds before she sings. You will hear her LAUGH! I swear!

Don’t take your eyes off the TV. Alli is in the shadows, and as she approaches the MIC she has a HUGE GRIN on her face until her lips are about an inch from the mic!! The floor monitor in front of the judges panel is on your TV screen, so, look closely.

  • Squirrely

Kris is good, but still don’t see how he beat Adam on talent alone. Not trying to rehash anything because it’s all good now but it still seems amazing that he won.

  • Sunn

    Hmmmm Kris? Not good.

ETA: Paula and Simon were doing their moron twins impression I see. God those 2 can be so annoying.

  • girlygirl

I wonder if any of the Idols are watching this tonight..and what they’re thinking

  • isisdagmar

I remember Allison and especially Adam being incredible from the beginning in this episode, but Kris started out good and then developed a lot. I actually never saw this episode live–I got into the season about half-way through–so this should be enjoyable. Too bad they couldn’t/didn’t edit out the judges’ comments. That just feels a bit awkward in what’s intended (theoretically) as a tribute.

  • ppwars

Can’t believe those idiots captioned her father.

  • xuziqueue

Kris is a mini studly guy. Showin’ the pipes in this show.

  • aek

and he was good here. Danny does have a wonderful rich voice, and he should be signed somewhere.

    I totally agree with this.

However, I totally agree with Simon that while the vocals were great, the “dancing” was kinda wonky. lol.

  • Matt

    Allison. Love her.

  • Dr. Tracey

Allison! One of my favorite performances of hers.

  • GeminiDolly

LOL @ Allison saying she doesnt cut herself.

  • isisdagmar

Can’t believe those idiots captioned her father.

Yes, that was definitely a sizable WTF moment.

  • aek

Too bad they couldn’t/didn’t edit out the judges’ comments. That just feels a bit awkward in what’s intended (theoretically) as a tribute.

Agree. It’s weird hearing the judges comments when they are totally irrelevant at this point.

I just remember that Simon used the word “stupid” to critique Anoop’s performance, and that made me cringe. I guess we’ll see that in a bit.

  • hollygo9

Kris is a mini studly guy. Showin’ the pipes in this show

I’d like a ticket to that gun show, please.

  • nuttin2lose

yeah they captioned her father. i guess he was speaking a foreign language to them. it sure soundedlike english to me.

  • girlygirl

Them captioning both Allison’s father and Jorge’s brother led to some WTF moments on Idolatry in that week’s recap. Slezak and whoever was co-hosting the recap with him (Kristen? Can’t remember) were like — they speak perfectly understandable English — why is Fox captioning them –?

  • GeminiDolly

    Somewhere Anoop is cringing.

  • ppwars

    YIKES! Poor ‘noop!

  • Sunn

    GeminiDolly
    Jun 29th, 2009 at 9:10 pm

    Somewhere Anoop is cringing.

    And quite rightly too.

  • clearone

I am so disappointed that they are just repeating the show as is with no additional comment or tribute to Michael. They could have added something at the beginning of the show.

….and the Gokey pimping was just :eek_wp:

  • sue

Well at least Noop Dawg looked hotttt!!!!!!!! LOL Yeah they should of added some commentary on MJ, ect. OH well.

  • Truthiness

It’s funny to watch Kris’s performance knowing that he won. And yeah, it was a good performance, but vocally not great. Certainly one of the better ones of the night, but that wasn’t saying much when one is going up against people like Jorge, Scott and Jasmine.

And the caw caw thing of Megan’s doesn’t stop being WTF, lol.

  • twinkle

it is so surreal watching this. im almost getting the pre-adam butterflies i got every week waiting for him to come on.

it’s also weird to watch all of them with all of the context of the weeks since the show ended and everything we’ve seen/heard/obsessed over since.

  • aek

‘ ¦.and the Gokey pimping was just

Not for me. Thus far Danny was the best vocally to me. The only performance that trumps his is Adams. And if I remember correctly they say after Adam’s performance that his was the best of the night. So I think the judges were spot on.

  • anovich

Seeing where he started makes me realize how much Kris grew on the show.

I actually walked out of the room during the Danny Gokey critique – wasn’t in the mood to listen to Paula’s tongue-bath and finals declaration again.

For the first time, I noticed Allison’s H sound on the beginning of her words that start with vowels when she was singing.

And Anoop, just ouch…he’s lucky he actually survived this week when I see this replay.

  • jpfan

It’s hard to even care about the performances a few months later although I thought Kris really stood out. Although maybe it’s because he has the aura of the winner. I wonder if Adam will stand out too. I understand why they don’t rerun the show unedited though. It’s a little like reruning a sporting event after you know who won.

  • Pam

And the caw caw thing of Megan’s doesn’t stop being WTF, lol.

Yes THIS. lol IMO that performance should have sent her home.

  • aek

Yes THIS. lol IMO that performance should have sent her home.

ITA. In my memory that performance was the worst of the night.

  • twinkle

my voting finger is starting to twitch.

  • Calliope

I actually liked Megan’s performance. She didn’t start losing me till she did the full-blast “For Once in My Life” performance on Motown week. I even enjoyed her caws.

I wasn’t actually an Adam fan till the following week. He did RoF and made me his bitch, but this week he did a good job (saw the emotion behind it), but I wasn’t on his bandwagon… yet.

  • NOLA

Danny does have a wonderful rich voice, and he should be signed somewhere.

I agree. I would listen to a CD of Danny’s before a whole CD of Lamberts.

  • aek

I actually liked Megan’s performance. She didn’t start losing me till she did the full-blast ‘For Once in My Life’ performance on Motown week. I even enjoyed her caws.

Oh, I was a big fan of her “caws” when she was eliminated. They were so wtf? It was just some awesome craziness….I still don’t get it.

  • Sunn

Who ended leaving on MJ week? Was it Jorge? I can’t remember.

  • cookcricket

lol the way you were all talking about Megan, I thought I missed her performance somehow, but they just announced her.

I guess there are four more, Megan, Adam, Matt and Alexis.

I liked Kris’s performance better 2nd time around than the first. :) However, this is still before his big break out moment. He did know who he is as an artist from the beginning though.

  • aek

Who ended leaving on MJ week? Was it Jorge? I can’t remember.

    Jorge and Jasmine, I think.

  • LadyBeBop

Once again, I moaned when the judges mentioned Jorge should have sung “She’s Out of My Life” instead of “Never Can Say Goodbye.” :cry_wp: I would have loved to have seen him on tour.

However, looking back, seeing him on tour might have been at the expense of Scott (my favorite)…or even (shudder) Allison.

  • holeighannie

I’m not re-watching the show (I have it on DVR, if I really want to see it sans commercials) but I remember liking Kris a lot. He wasn’t anywhere near perfect, but, for me, that’s what makes his win so much more special. He started out in the middle and really stepped it up, showing just how much he was capable of.

It’s funny, at the time I was so-so on Allison’s performance, but now I looove listening to the mp3. The single version is definitely in my current rotation.

Other remembrances: Danny’s “PYT”dancing scared the shit out of me. Michael’s voice was pretty, if a little boring. Lil chose one of my favorites and I just wasn’t impressed. Megan cemented my hate for her. Scott may as well have not performed, that’s how little I remember him. Adam was really good, but I hadn’t accepted his OTT-ness yet. Matt was good, but I didn’t know the song, so I forgot about it. Jasmine and Jorge barely registered. Alexis was good, but Kara’s constant hope for her to be “dirty” turned me off. And poor Anoop…that was just a horrible song choice. Especially compared to some of his later stuff when the guy sounded like a record. I still love his voice.

  • Yss

Who ended leaving on MJ week? Was it Jorge? I can’t remember.

    Jorge and Jasmine, I think.

Alexis ended the night with Dirty Diana.

  • CCAdamFan

They did edit Kara’s comment about MJ watching.

  • twinkle

they took out the “i hope MJ is watching right now” from kara as they should have… but we missed the sweet “aww i love him” response from adam.

  • Sunn

I was watching while comfortably lounging on the sofa, 30 secs into Adam’s performance I sat up involuntarily. I only notices after he finished. I just find that you can’t help but stand in attention and focus when ever he performs. If that’s not X factor, excuse the pun, I don’t know what is.

    That was great.

  • NOLA

I’m not re-watching the show (I have it on DVR, if I really want to see it sans commercials)

I’ve got the season on DVD, so I’m watching the rerun of “Can You Duet.” LOL

  • spring2009

Can I just say …. Adam in hi def…..yes indeed.

  • nuttin2lose

Adam had tears in his eyes. first time i was noticing that.
    meanwhile is Matt bi-racial?

  • GeminiDolly

wow, I forgot how great matt was with human nature.

  • maracaibo

I fell in love with Matt all over again. Awwww. That performance melts me.

He did so well that night. Loved the smooth cool voice.
I really hope Matty G gets signed soon. He records amazingly.

  • sleeptalker

I never got Matt. still don’t. sexy, Paula?

Excited for Alexis and Ryan’s talk about how to not dial a phone sex line…. :D

  • aek

Adam had tears in his eyes. first time i was noticing that.
    meanwhile is Matt bi-racial?

I think I’ve read that Matt is 1/4 African American. I also liked this Matt performance. Matt’s problem was that he was sort of hit or miss. He wasn’t very consistent. But when he’s good, he’s good. I think he is very talented, though.

Oh, yeah, I do agree with Paula that Matt is sexy. The sexiest of the bunch, to me. I also like his curls tonight ;)

  • Mom in the Suburbs

My memory: This was the first night I was struck by how Adam looked like he was headlining his own concert, while everyone else looked like good (but karaoke) singers. The way the crowd reacted, my own racing heart when he took the stage. The guy owned that place, and after this night he owned me as a fan. Love his emotional humility when everyone adores him, like he never expected that in a million years.

  • Sunn

Lol! I just saw an ad for Dry Mouth. Why not just call it hangover gum?

I’m international, so all these ads are new to me. :) It’s an education let me tell ya.

  • Tess

    meanwhile is Matt bi-racial?

His maternal grandfather was black…and had a hit record once.

  • Adamdebomb

Rewatching the show I think-first, how can a girl as beautiful as Megan (and I notice her mom and child are also attractive) maim herself with a hideous tat that covers her whole arm. Sorry, okay I’m old, but ewww. Also, sorry, I think she should not have made the top 13.
I hope Jasmine gets some vocal training-who knows? As beautiful as she is she just might make it. Me thinks I will see her instead on gossip girl or a CW show first….
I’m not a Danny fan, but yes, I think his voice is rich and beautiful when he sings the right songs. There is a place for Danny in the recording industry-but it might be more Gospel/Christian contemp.
Kris? Sorry, I was bored to tears. He isn’t a bad singer, he is just boring.
I never noticed how touched Adam was by the praise-made me feel warm all over, and I think the replay of this show will be a big boost for his fan base.
Instead of judges comments, each contestant should have taped a Michael memory. Sheesh, yes, lazy, cheap and lookin’ for some cash AI?

  • Pam

Who ended leaving on MJ week? Was it Jorge? I can’t remember.

    It was Jorge and Jasmine.

  • PattyH

This was the week that Adam’s kissing photo hit the internet. Adam has since said, in interviews, that it was a very emotional performance for him.

  • GeminiDolly

Never hopped on the Alexis train. Shes okay, nothing great.

  • isisdagmar

Jasmine’s makeup terrified me. She’s a pretty girl, but she looked like one of those dolled-up pageant girls at the end of Little Miss Sunshine.

  • Mom in the Suburbs

At this point, I’m remembering I still really liked Danny AND Lil, lol. Hey, they do have good voices, just not a lot of stage presence! Kris always seemed like a sweet guy, but at this point I never would’ve guessed he’d actually win….certainly based on that performance.

  • clearone

but we missed the sweet ‘aww i love him’ response from adam.

    It was there…….

Sigh, Adam was so emotional that night not knowing how he was going to be accepted. Those tears in his eyes sure got me tonight. Rock on Adam!

….and I sure never would have predicted Kris to win based on that performance!

….and Alexis should be on tour NOT Sarver!

  • idolislife

Holy god. I forgot how big lils butt looked on those pants… Yeeesh well that was her only good performance vocaly…

  • lola

This was the theme week when Adam made his mark as the idol to watch and kind of predict his way to the finals. After this performance, I started watching AI again just to see Adam perform.

  • twinkle

clearone – that’s what im hearing from other people too along with another part after that that i thought had been cut. i dunno if my broadcast is different (doubtful) or if i blacked out due to excitement (likely).

  • aek

I saw Adam say “I love him”, but there was no reference to what he was referring to since the comment had been cut out. But the “I love him” was still there.

  • clearone

clearone – that’s what im hearing from other people too along with another part after that that i thought had been cut. i dunno if my broadcast is different (doubtful) or if i blacked out due to excitement (likely).

    That I can understand! :biggrin_wp:

  • jack5791

It’s crazy to watch now knowing what actually happened and comparing it to what I originally remember thinking when the episode first aired.

  • taran33

I’m still pissed that Alexis didn’t make it on tour. That was kinda weird to watch and already know the outcome.

  • lola

Yes, Alexis is more marketable than Sarver or Scott.

  • elw

Wow, after rewatching AI tonight I realized that this was the night that a star was born. Like Simon said, Adam was in a totally different league from everyone else on the stage. It is unbelievable to me that he didn’t win the competition…

  • ShariG

I really liked Kris’s performance this week. I actually started voting for him the week before this when he sang Michael Jackson’s Man in the Mirror. I liked that song better than the one this week, actually. If fact, Man in the Mirror is one of my favorite downloads for all of season 8. However, what I remember most about this week is that it was the week the over the top comments from the judges started turning me off to Adam. It wasn’t even close to one of his best performances and you would have though Michael Jackson himself had been on the Idol stage for all of the gushing. I was never a big fan of Adam from this day forward although I fully expected that he would win since the judges were so determined to push him on the American public. I really do not think that helped him. He’s a nice guy and very talented. Their total disregard for everyone else and constant over the top comments towards Adam I’m pretty sure lost him votes. I know it lost him mine, although, Kris was my favorite anyway. Just liked his innocence and his style.

  • clearone

It is unbelievable to me that he didn’t win the competition’ ¦

You’re not alone in your disbelief.

  • iluvai

Wow! Was that fun or what????!!! I still feel all (fireworks) watching Adam. I think the first time this aired I wasn’t paying attention to the other finalists because I was waiting for Adam to go on.

But this time I watched everyone intently and I really enjoyed the performances from everyone. I hope things work out nicely for all of them.

I remember being so freaked out and wanting Adam to go through. I loved the outfit. I loved how he jumped down in front of the judges. Every week, my husband was like what the heck is your problem. The guy is so talented. Relax. But I never could.

I’m so proud of Kris and Adam. It’s weird watching it over when you know the outcome.

I’m so proud of all of them!!!! And I thought Matt was GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Michael Jackson, you inspire a million gazillion talented singers. I hope you feel proud of their efforts. RIP Michael!!! You are the best!!!! Love, Caitie

  • AC

guys! we need to be voting, not talking! hehe..

I remember hating most of the judges comments because of all the ott pimping in the beginning. is it also weird that I kinda like Anoop’s Beat It this time? haha. I think Idol makes me crazy

  • anovich

I think this episode was interesting to watch knowing the outcome.

I think it was interesting to hear the comments to Adam that they couldn’t understand how he wasn’t yet a recoridng artist. And that might be one of the reasons he didn’t wn.; He started off at such a high level there was no room for him to develop and become better. On the other hand, watching this – the development of Allison and Kris is so obvious when we see them at the beginning of ths journey.

I also found it interesting how Kara (I think it was her) said that Jorge was the one who connected most with his lyrics in the past and that’s why he chose the wrong song – not sure if I agree ith him being someone who connected to his lyrics – maybe it’s just because that’s something i’ve connected to Kris and I can’t connect the concept to anyone else from the show.

  • newshound61

Very ironic that even with all the praise from the judges, Adam later criticizes Black or White as his worst, describing it as “a mess, vocally.” And after watching the show back, wow, some of those performances were absolutely horrid. Sarver’s was the worst next to Anoop’s Beat It. The Danny pimping was pretty obvious, as well, and frankly, he butchered P.Y.T. dancing-wise and vocally.
The thing with Adam is that even with the limited vocals, his stage presence is undeniable, especially after he really gets comfortable. I didn’t notice the first time I watched how emotional he got after the judge’s supportive comments. Did he really wonder how they would react to him? It’s hard to picture him as anything other than supremely confident.
Finally, not sure which interview it was, but when they talked about the tribute to MJ rerun (of the top 13 show) and played both Adam and Kris’ performances, both of them groaned.

  • hollygo9

Kris hadn’t won me over yet buy this point but I already knew that I wanted nothing to do with Danny and Adam.

  • useless

Can someone tell me why Adam’s performance seemed different (i.e. diff moves) when they show the recaps at the end with the numbers) ? Are they showing the rehearsals perhaps?

  • useless

Does someone know why Adam’s moves during B/W are different during the recaps with the phone #’s at the end of the show versus what we see on the screen when he performs? Perhaps we are seeing the rehearsals at the end of the show?

Watching this back just pisses me off all over again…I’m sorry but All I have to say is Danny was terrible with this song (in my opinion) and to watch the judges praise him for this just makes me snicker…..So glad it’s over…
    Lil was not good either…
It’s funny to see how much different some look even though it wasn’t that long ago….

  • Suzanne

Hey–I forgot to watch. (I watched “Holes” on Disney. HEY–it’s a good movie; don’t judge.)

Did anything different happen? Did Ryan Seacrest do a little intro from after MJ’s death to set up why the show is being replayed? Or was it merely a simple rebroadcast and that’s it?

  • cookcricket

I remember now that while Adam’s performance and stage presence were yes, pretty amazing, I thought he was shouty, esp. when he was down in front of the judges. And the reason I remember this is because I was so frustrated that the judges were saying Alexis’s vocals were OTT, after they fell all over what Adam did. I’m not denying his star power showing through, I just remember wondering about this at this point.

I’m pretty sure I voted for Kris, Matt and Alexis that night. I felt these three were all stars in the making with ginormous potential.

That’s it. They film the rehearsals to make the wrap-up package at the end.

Me thinks I will see her instead on gossip girl or a CW show first’ ¦.

Every point you mentioned. Yes, yes, yes. Thanks!!!!

  • oceanarose

Can someone tell me why Adam’s performance seemed different (i.e. diff moves) when they show the recaps at the end with the numbers) ? Are they showing the rehearsals perhaps?

The recaps at the end are taped during dress rehearsal.

I thought it was interesting how I felt differently about some of the performances tonight when I wasn’t caught up in who would go home. This was the night that when I saw Adam I thought “Wow! He is an awesome perfomer. This guy is going to go somewhere.” This is one of my favorite performances of his.

  • Grammie Kari

‘ ¦.and I sure never would have predicted Kris to win based on that performance!

‘ ¦.and Alexis should be on tour NOT Sarver!

Isn’t that the truth? Alexis was an awesome contestant. Michael? Not so much so. Way too much praise for Danny. Adam was a special treat. Kris is truly an adorable guy.

Poor Anoop… he could have sung circles around several of those performances. Any other MJ song would have been wonderful for him. I also hated the fact that they made it sound like Anoop was a last minute choice. He was somewhere in the middle, and Jasmine was needed because they was a shortage of girls.

I am so happy Anoop proved Simon wrong!

  • abbysee

Wow, back then Lil could sing a bit imho! If Danny had done stuff like the first 15-20 seconds of PYT I might have liked him more. He does have a sweet spot, he just doesn’t know where it is. I didn’t think Alexis was as good as most here did, it was a hot, shouty, mess. Adam was correct, he was a bit off vocally, but his conviction was dead on. I felt that song more than anyone elses that night. Sarver should have gone home as he was worse than the two that did go home. Jorge is a better singer, and Jasmine had better presence. Kris, i just hated the guitar with that song, it was just odd, and the notes very wonky toward the end. I actually liked Matt…wonder did I feel that way that night?

It was fun watching again, and it was a nice tribute to Michael, sometimes it’s best just to let the music speak. Even the judges comments didn’t take that away from me.

  • iluvai

You know I thought they should have changed it up. But really it was nice that they aired the show. The music and inspiration speak volumes.

  • Mtlfan

It made me Remember the time when I tought that Kris was the artist I liked most on the show (beside Adam) :)

  • isisdagmar

I think that Adam deserved almost all of the praise that the judges’ gave him over the course of the season (and more at times–they underpraised RoF, IMO), and Allison deserved a lot more than they gave her, as did Kris at times, but I find it sad to think that anyone decided they didn’t like Adam because of that praise. Even if you don’t think he deserved it, which is fine, it’s not his fault. I didn’t like Danny, but that had nothing to do with the OTT praise for him (annoying as hell as it was). I got annoyed at times when the judges compared other contestants to Adam (just seemed like overkill) but I didn’t get annoyed at Adam–again, not his fault. But whatever, the season is over and things have worked out well for the most talented ones there.

And yes, while I did think Alexis sounded strained at points in her Dirty Diana performance, she clearly has a lot of natural talent and deserves to be on tour 100X more than Sarver and Scott, at least.

  • Q3

nothing added or changed’ ¦ except taking out a comment from kara saying ‘i hope MJ is watching this tonight’

But they left in Adam saying “I love him” referring to MJ. Kind of odd because what would you thing was going on if you didn’t know that they had cut that line out?

Watching the show left me with a few other thoughts:

How did Sarver ever get into the Top 10? This was not Alexis’ best performance but she still really deserved to make the Top 10.

Megan, CAW CAW TWEET TWEET, was one of the worst Finalist performances I remember and it is no better on the second (and my last) viewing.

Scott, Megan, Danny and Lil were worse than I remembered. I think Danny was OK but that dancing was sooooo bad?!?!?!

Anoop was lucky to survive this night. I’m really glad he made it through.

Kris was better then I remembered but he really missed those high notes, and I’ll forget this performance in the morning again. Just not his best.

Matt was pretty good vocally, but is a really quite a good pianist.

I remembered loving Alison’s performance and it was great to see it again.

Adam’s performance was great, but I really forgot that he had tears in his eyes during the judges comments. I think the first time I saw it I was stunned by Adam’s performance and Paula’s rambling OTT remarks and didn’t really notice — and I haven’t watched this on a big screen, in HD since the live broadcast.

Finally, I think that Adam actually got better as the show went on. He really did miss some notes in this performance. As the season progressed, his performances became much tighter.

    Do you remember

    he was
    young and innocent then

    Do you remember
    when he flexed those guns
    it just seemed like heaven
    so I tivo’d in

    I’ll betcha remember

  • kate09

*Sigh* It was good to see Adam on my TV again.

His run on Idol was simply amazing. I just love him all over again.

  • galaxygrrl

I so remember this performance by Adam, I thought he just blew it out of the water.

The thing is while Adam is confident, he was not sure if America would get his act. You can see him getting emotional when he realized people got it. I remember thinking that people had gotten it because i watched his Zodiac show videos loved them. But had no idea how America would react.

It’s interesting that people keep on saying how he did not win. I voted for Adam and Allison the whole way through, but I actually like Kris at 1 and Adam at 2. Adam did not need to win AI to be a star and I think Kris does. I like Kris, I think he will be a star like Jack Johnson, John Mayer, because he makes you feel. It kinda of ended the way I thought it should — well with the exception I thought Allison should have beat Danny. But I think we will see all three of them be stars. They are so different.

  • hayden0604

Scott, Megan, Danny and Lil were worse than I remembered. I think Danny was OK but that dancing was sooooo bad?!?!?!

Also, the first time this aired I totally missed Simon’s catchy come back when Jorge said something about ‘Well I was not going sing Michael Jackson’s ‘Bad,’ and Simon said ‘Well you kind of did.’

HAHA good one Simon. I did not like Jorge at all & am still pissed that he was up there beside Kris during ‘No Boundaries’ finale night – Adam was nowhere near him & that was such a Kradam moment!

Thanks for airing the show again FOX & thanks Michael for all the wonderful songs & memories you leave us. I hope you’ve found some peace now.

i dunno if the rumor has made it over to MJ’s but someone at gossipcandy says that if you listen closely to the anoop yahoo interview you can hear the first bit of guitar on ‘whole lotta love’ in the background. i couldn’t hear it on my computer, but im gonna break out the headphones and see if it is true. thought maybe i could get a few more ears on the case’ ¦ seeing as how i missed whole sections of tonight’s show i dont trust myself!

if it’s true, we might have the full set of adam’s songs’ ¦*****

Twinkle I hear the bass notes but it could just be someone goofing off. Lyndsay didn’t comment on it, and I think she would comment on anything Adam.

  • d. b. cooper

Like Simon said, Adam was in a totally different league from everyone else on the stage.

    Allison Iraheta anyone?

The pimping of Adam that night was OTT in my book. Excellent performance? Sure. Mind-blowing, slobber-inducing, blazing hot lava bomb? Not so much. (What Not To Sing backs me up that Allison’s performance was actually rated one point higher by contemporary critics, not that that is the end all be all.)

Eye of the beholder, I guess:)

    (edited for clarity)

  • KrazeeK120

Top 3 of the night: Adam, Allison, and Kris. Alexis 4th. The rest just really weren’t that great.

I can’t believe I sat through Danny’s PYT for a second time. It was tortuous enough the first!

  • twinkle

Twinkle I hear the bass notes but it could just be someone goofing off. Lyndsay didn’t comment on it, and I think she would comment on anything Adam.

i finally heard them too. but what if she wasn’t allowed to reveal anything? she was walking around rehearsals all day so im guessing she knows quite a bit of what is being played and hasn’t revealed anything other than what each person said in the interview.

i really hope he does do WLL… it was one of my faves. BoW would be a great one to do in concert too…

  • TWI

It was good to see that episode again – knowing what we know now.
I thought Adam and Allison were the outstanding contestants on that showing, and I remembered how much I liked Jorge (yes, I’m the one!)

I wasn’t impressed with Kris, Michael, Matt or Anoop – they must have improved later in the series.

It was a good way of AI paying tribute to MJ, and it whetted my appetite for the concert. Just over 3 weeks to wait! :smile_wp:

However, what I remember most about this week is that it was the week the over the top comments from the judges started turning me off to Adam. It wasn’t even close to one of his best performances and you would have though Michael Jackson himself had been on the Idol stage for all of the gushing. I was never a big fan of Adam from this day forward although I fully expected that he would win since the judges were so determined to push him on the American public. I really do not think that helped him. He’s a nice guy and very talented. Their total disregard for everyone else and constant over the top comments towards Adam I’m pretty sure lost him votes

You have to remember this is the week the pics came out on the internet of Adam and his ex. The comments on the internet, youtube, VFTW, etc at times were down right mean. I think the judges praised Adam because he was terrific, yes, but I got the feeling that they also wanted to reassure Adam that his personal life did not matter. There was some debate on the internet that TPTB would throw Adam under the bus because of those pics. Adam’s performance was great, but for those who knew of the uproar on the internet, it was also very powerful.

I think Adam is correct when he said the praise may have convinced some people that it was ok to like him.

  • Kilroy

I can’t believe “pimping” is still being discussed. I guess if one doesn’t like a contestant, then he/she was pimped. I’m an Adam-only fan, and I still think Kris was terrific (knew from that night he’d be Adam’s biggest competition), Matt was better than simply “solid,” Danny’s voice is nice, Megan is charming, etc. It’s interesting to view them all in context, and remember it was their first night on the big stage. Adam’s movements were hampered on the little semi-finals stage, and he seemed much more comfortable on the bigger stage. He certainly needed AI in order to become a star, imo more than any of the other contestants. He needed to make America view him as an entertainer first, and “the gay” second, and that would only have happened on AI where he’s beamed into living rooms week after week. Kris is only 24, and perhaps if he’d moved to LA or NY, he would have gotten famous without the show. He certainly has the musical chops, as does Matt and a lot of them. Adam was actually struggling in LA for 8 years. Being a session singer and a musical theatre guy doesn’t mean one didn’t “need” AI. Adam seems very grateful for the platform that the show and 19/RCA provided.

Anyway, warm fuzzies for all of them. Even Anoop, who I guess punched a wall backstage after the performance. His voice is great, on the right song.

  • iluvai

Kris always seemed like a sweet guy, but at this point I never would’ve guessed he’d actually win’ ¦.certainly based on that performance.

I thought the same thing at the time. But watching the show again, I noticed that the crowd went crazy for Kris. My husband and son seemed to always like him. I just didn’t get it because I was head over heels for Adam. It’s all so funny and fun now. I really liked this season.

  • iluvai

Hey MJ: I just read your original recap. I didn’t find you(your blog)until later in the season. I think you were spot on with your observations! However, I didn’t see Adam as OTT at that point. I see it in later performances tho.

I just get warm fuzzies from the whole thing. I liked this group of kids.

  • Suzanne

Watchin’ now–thanks MJ’s blog. BTW–The Alison link goes to a Matt video. No Allison–boo.

Lil–good voice but could have had stronger stage work. And that outfit! 1980s fat-ass pants with the top of a bridesmaid dress. And Paula complimented it–whoa.

Scott looks like his Dad. Completely lackluster perf for a spirited song. And that note? oh no.

Danny–really? Professor tweed jacket for that song? And was his back saturated with sweat? Paula’s right–he’s got a very distinctive voice. Liked it, but not as much as they did.

After three, I have no more patience for listening to Kara.

Michael– I fell asleep. Honestly. Don’t get why Simon was so positive.

Jasmine–cute family. Karaoke. The only way to do that song would be with an acoustic guitar or a light piano/make it intimate.

Kris–cute bit with Allison. I think I might go buy it while I can. Sounds great. What’s up with the inaudible guitar though?

Matt–the new Allison–her link goes to him. Nice job, but I couldn’t understand the words sometimes so it was hard to invest in the performance.

Anoop–I didn’t make it through the performance. No one is allowed to sing that–except Weird Al.

    Jorge–Can’t watch it.

Megan–She’s got a young Mom, eh? Agree with others in this thread about her tattoo. It’s like a port-wine stain. I don’t get it either. She’s got a singing voice that’s like speech. Kind of harsh.

Adam–This is one of about 5 songs I’ve bought from itunes from the season. The single is a better vocal than this live performance, but this was good too. But he is such a showman, eh? He’s really committed to his acting for every millisecond. I mean, when he raises his eyebrow, he’s acting. He’s very exacting.

Alexis–Man–she was so ripped off. She should have come in at about 5th. Good but kinda . . . dirty.

Allison–found her video. she did a great job of it, and I know that Kris picked the song out for her, but I didn’t really enjoy the song. Just not a fan of that song.

Nice walk down memory lane. Gee it was all Adam and Danny back then eh? What did we think the order would be in the end? Danny, Adam, Alexis, Matt, Allison, Kris, Anoop, and everyone else sux.

  • SarahP

awww i loved reading all the comments. i couldn’t get to see the re-run but after extensive reading, i felt that i have. i remember liking allison and alexis that week and kris won me over only the next week, which was country.

Kris always seemed like a sweet guy, but at this point I never would’ve guessed he’d actually win’ ¦.certainly based on that performance.

ya me too. i think there were way too many OTT singers at that point in the competition (jorge, danny, adam, lil, alexis) that kris was totally overshadowed. but i remember that he made Remember The Time very kris-allenish and in retrospect i loved his take on it. that is what i call “ARTISTRY”

  • revcat

Sorry I don’t want to read all 4 pages of comments, so this may have been mentioned, but didn’t Danny Gokey look a lot slimmer?

Also, I wish Jasmine had made it further. She is so darn cute! I’m in California, so the broadcast isn’t over…

Bwah, hate being last time wise!

Aww, I missed all of this! Was tweeting it (made my Idol Detox go right to hell, as if it had ever begun).

    Very brief thoughts:

    1) Thought it would be Adam v Danny in the finale. Was actually a Danny fan a the beginning (why, I don’t know).

    2) Fell in love with Adam that week; liked, did not love, him before then.

    3) Thought Kris was just alright; thought Matt, Alexis, Danny, and Lil were much stronger. But Kris just kept better and better, as we all know, and knocked ‘em off one by one. And yes, the ladies loved Kris.

    4) Simon was right on just about everyone, tho I did not think Kris was “clumsy,” but Jorge WAS out of his element. Kara wanted to jump Matt. Paula had trouble articulating her thoughts (more than usual, IMO). Randy was useless (me for you for me for you for you). Best line was Simon telling Scott that this was not a show about artistry. Kara changed her mind about this week to week.

    5) Never liked Sarver, and he was adequate. Expected Jasmine and Jorge to get voted off, but then I thought Sarver, not Alexis.

    6) Adam walked down those stairs with Feeling Good a helluva lot better than the judges. Thankfully, that only lasted for two weeks.

Ah, memories; TIME FOR THE TOUR TO BEGIN! Oh, and Kris just tweeted about eating plums. Hmm…

And why was there the recap for voting at the end? WTF? Why no final MJ tribute or something? Pure laziness, IMO. FOX, meet BET.

  • GeminiDolly

I thought Adam, Allison, and Matt were great in this epi.

Anoop and Megan made me laugh, that was all sorts of wrong.

Kris was good. Danny and Lil were alright. Jasmine was not as bad as the judges made her out to be.

Michael and Scott bored me. Ditto Alexis. I forgot Jorge existed.

Judging by this night, I had Kris leaving at number 7. He surprised me and really showed growth in the competition. Adam from Day 1 was great. Allison is my girl. Glad she got a record deal after all this. I dont really care about the rest, lol.

  • Grammie Kari

Anyway, warm fuzzies for all of them. Even Anoop, who I guess punched a wall backstage after the performance. His voice is great, on the right song.

Anoop is a perfectionist and the judge’s comments really stabbed at his heart. At least he looked good! And he kept his promise with “Always on My Mind”and “Ooo Baby Baby” (The Miracles) the next two weeks. Yes, Anoop’s voice is radio ready, especially when hearing the studio recordings.

Just a reminder that Alexis had the total package and would have only gotten better. I hope some producer or director watched the show tonight – the camera loves her face.

  • Q3

Also, I wish Jasmine had made it further.

Yes, I really like her — not a great song choice, and the dress and makeup were not great. I think she would have been better off waiting a couple of years to be on Idol.

  • maryct

the tattoo on Megan’s arm does not sit well with me either. I think it has too much dark blue and black in it, and it seems like its the opposite of her trying to look feminine, like in that dress on tonight’s show. That and also with 9 out of 10 times she sang, she always showed that tatoo sleeve. She always wore sleeveless outfits. People that get those tattoo sleeves are proud of it, however, when you see it like that, it might not sit well with whomever is looking at it.. as for me, it is too dark and too much. maybe if it were different lighter colors or not so much, it would look better. or maybe more feminine. it seems like it does not match her personality for some reason.

    Ah, the memories.
It was fun tonight to rush home like I started to last season (once I had become hopelessly hooked on Adam), then rewind the few minutes I missed and sit down and … wait.
This time, of course, I knew more or less what to expect. The first time I could not recall at all anything about Kris — and Remember the Time is one of my favorite MJ songs. I never notice before how much he contorts his face — reminds me of the old Jerry Lewis telethon caricature. Never would have thought he would win based on that performance.
Also forgot how badly Gokey and Megan move — hopefully they have improved. And that silly Gokey excuse: I can sing and I can dance but when I put them together … Hello? That’s what performers do.
Adam sure knows that. Oh man, just loved him all over again. That confident strut in the beginning … pant! He really was in a league of his own. And I, too, had not noticed the eyes welling up the first time. I agree with some of you that this was the first time he really knew that people got him. And those photos had just come out, so that was probably even more a question in his mind.
I was also surprised at how much I liked Matt — and how much I did not like Anoop. Looked like a frat boy trying to look like a gangster.
    Anyway, fun.

  • golcook

Good times good times, and I found mj’s Allison video HERE.

  • hwc

Never would have thought he would win based on that performance.

One trick pony. That MJ perfomance was exactly the same as Heartless with difference lyrics.

He didn’t offend anyone, made sure everyone knew he prayed to the baby Jesus, outlasted the other wannabees, and inherited all of the “Anybody But That Gay Guy” vote from Anoop, Matt, Alison, and Donny.

The turning point in the season was Gorkey’s scream. If he had just done some boring song with no Steven Tyler scream, it probably would have been Donny versus the kid who won in the finals.

  • GlamGirlLee

Adam was up just now. I remember I was waiting for Adam after having seen him do “Satisfaction” the week before. I also remember thinking ‘wow, Kris is cute in a short, mini kind of way..’, but after Adam I forgot all about Kris and everyone else. Adam had that effect on me throughout the whole season. I didn’t vote MJ week though. After “Ring of Fire” though, oh boy, I was a goner. I have all his performance videos (and singles) but it is nice to see him again on TV in the context of the show.

Is it just me or does anyone else think Adam was thinner in the beginning of the show?

I liked Megan MJ week. She was quirky and cute. And I was jealous of her mom. If I were a dude, I’d think she is hot!

I still want that blue leather jacket Adam wore, dang it!

  • lizardino

A few of them were thinner at the beginning of the show! Stress, busy schedules and lack of exercise will do that to you.

  • undercooked

Is it just me or does anyone else think Adam was thinner in the beginning of the show?

Yes, I also think Danny looked thinner too. I think the chef in the mansion is to blame.

I was watching while comfortably lounging on the sofa, 30 secs into Adam’s performance I sat up involuntarily. I only notices after he finished. I just find that you can’t help but stand in attention and focus when ever he performs.

Thank you, Sunn. Whew, I wasn’t alone. It was like this for me the whole season, and at times I felt retarded.

  • girlygirl

I’m glad Jasmine didn’t make it to the Top 10…she is way too pagent girl for me. And when she was on the finale show, she was way off key the entire time. I wish Alexis had made tour instead of Sarver or Scott, though — she is more talented and has more potential as a current artist.

I think this MJ week may have been Kris’ 2nd weakest performance of the year, ahead of only the Year of Birth show. Every other week besides those 2 he was in the good to great range — so he showed lot of improvement as the season went on, while many of the other contestants either got worse or were just way more inconsistent.

Any way, good to see them all again. Nice little warm up for getting to see (most) of them on tour in a couple weeks.

Meanwhile, random recent tweet from Kris:

#Note to self: Eating 14 plums makes you feel weird.#about 1 hour ago from TwitterFon

  • suebrody

Yep, they were thinner. I saw Adam’s suits get tighter and tighter through the season (but he looked really hot in his long coat for MW Deux on the finale). Now he is back to pre-Idol weight, I believe. Sweet.

I got excited to watch and tweet tonight. Even tho I watch Adam’s performances on a regular basis (she wrote in embarrassment), it was exciting to see BoW again as if for the first time (with several of my closest twitter friends). He was a superstar from beginning to end, and it was fun to see Kris grow and grow through the season (reminded me a bit of Cook last year). I now think about the idea of Adam v Danny in the finale and cringe. The only upshot is that I would love to have seen Adam smash Danny. But if Gokey had won? Who wants to buy an $80 ticket…

This was a nice way to get pumped up for the Tour! Allison and Anoop tweeted about watching the show tonight. Kris and Adam did not tweet about this. ;)

  • smokeyvera

Also under twitters – I am a little concerned about a tweet about Adam about going too techno on one song. Oh boy – hope it’s not over the top – but they make so many songsa and the best get chosen. right?

  • cookcricket

I went back to read mj’s recap and skimmed over a couple of pages of comments. I was surprised that Kris was a stand out to some even then. I know I liked him and saw his early potential, but more peeps than I thought talked about him being one of the top that night.

^^^I’m sorry, but who is Rick Astley?

  • webster

Not sure having a bunch of random newbies sing mini sound bite versions of his music is much of a tribute to Michael Jackson, but it’s probably not the sillies thing being done in his name this week. I came into the season at Ring of Fire, and missed this rebroadcast, so I appreciate and look forward to seeing the goods – thanks MJ! (the living one, not the dead one). Reading a smattering of the comments, though, in advance of watching: I wonder how things would have been if scores were cumulative, like Olympic diving, instead of tabla rasa each week. Could be an interesting twist, or could be totally blandifying.

  • May

Kris always seemed like a sweet guy, but at this point I never would’ve guessed he’d actually win’ ¦.certainly based on that performance.

I didn’t think so either, but I actually thought his performance was one of the more memorable ones of the night. I thought the Michael Jackson night was the worse night of all of the weeks. Everyone made the mistake of trying to channel Michael which only showcased their shortcomings. Kris was one of the few people who really made a serious attempt to put his own signature on the song and I appreciated that. I didn’t think the performance was great (I thought the inaudible guitar was a turnoff) but I remember thinking that it was the most interesting and least karaoke of all the performances. Even with that, I dismissed him as a contender, because I didn’t think he had enough stage presence to go very far. However, he managed to improve immensely with every week and seeing him perform with Keith Urban in the finale really solidified the fact that he had star quality.

  • isisdagmar

Watching that episode back: I do agree with Paula that Alexis somewhat oversang on parts of Dirty Diana, but I thought that Simon was so out of line to say “not as good as you thought it was.” Unless I missed something that he saw when the camera wasn’t on her, she seemed like she was just waiting for her critiques without any arrogance at all. Now, sometimes you can tell that a contestant thinks he or she did a lot better than he or she actually did (*Danny*), but nothing in Alexis’ demeanor suggested that to me. I know that Simon’s thing is to be rude, and sometimes I appreciate him cutting people down to size, but that seemed both untrue and cruel to me.

I didn’t start watching this show until after Alexis was voted off, but it’s clear that she’s so much more naturally gifted than (at minimum) Scott and Michael, and she should be on tour.

Adam–I would mostly agree withe the judges that he was in a different league, even if it wasn’t actually one of his greatest vocal performances. Even his not-best is still amazing. But Allison was truly amazing, so she was either in his league or right below it on that one.

Kris smoothed out in terms of performance and vocals a lot over the season, but even back then you could tell how much appeal he had, and that he was gifted.

Looking back, it seems clearer than ever that Adam, Allison, and Kris are special. I’ve not seen much of this show in the past, but it does seem like the show produces a lot of people who are talented singers or performers, but not really “artists.” Adam, Allison, and Kris seem like true artists to me, I am very glad that they are making make albums, and hopefully they will all have the success that they deserve.

  • ross

Of course I’m a Kris fan, but the fact is, I think he had great taste in songs. So did Adam, usually. This is one thing hardly anyone talks about but it set both of them apart right away. I thought Danny’s, Lil’s and Anoop’s song selections were pretty uninteresting, usually. It matters more than you think.

I think both guys are great singers. But they also know pop music backwards and forwards, and even in this first Top 13 show you can sense that. They come across as the real thing right away.

  • Natasha

This was the performance that convinced me Adam was a star. He’s had better vocals but he tore up the stage. I hate to admit it but Simon was right. Adam was on another level.

I liked Allison’s performance a lot too. They were the two that stood out to me, then and now. I feel bad for Anoop having to relive his Beat It disaster. Eek. That was not good at all but at least it was memorable. I almost nodded off during Sarver’s performance and I can’t even remember what he sang.

  • Q3

I agree that Adam and Alison had the best performances of the night.

I think that Alison was great, but after rewatching this show, I think she would have been better off if she had done a MJ song that she could relate to and that more people know. “Give in to Me” wasn’t even released as a single in the U.S. Maybe something like “Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough”.

IMO with just a few different song choices here and there, Alison would have been in the final.

  • jammasta

That night was a pretty good night. I like ballads so I even liked Jasmine and Michael.

Lil, Adam, Matt, and Allison, and Kris were really good that night, I thought. As a Kris fan, I do agree that this wasn’t his best, but I still thought I might become a fan later on because he was just so likable (And I did, he became my favorite Idol winner ever). Alexis was interesting, but she tried a bit too hard, and I think based on her two performances it seemed appropriate for her to go 11th (although 10th – 7th would’ve also been a good spot for her, but I don’t think she was robbed). Danny Gokey was good to me. Jorge and Anoop were bad. Megan was interesting. I didn’t like Scott so much either.

  • watt

I remember that was the night when I eagerly waited to see Danny, my favorite since the audition. But after B/W performance, all I could remember is Adam Lambert.

  • http://www.twilightslo.com Mateja

Oh Lord, Adam’s Black or White is still my guilty pleasure. I can’t take my eyes off of him. Paula’s comments were so totally spot on. Scary!

I also liked Matt, Allison and Alexis.

Kris was OK. I liked the song, but I was never impressed with his singing.

  • MJack

I LOVED the studio version of Alexis’ Dirty Diana but, let’s face it, she looked like a hooker performing it live. Just this tiny bit to far, even for the song.

Matt was my favourite of the night, his best performance by far.

BTW: I have to admit, back then I had skipped Lil’s performance over, so decided to watch it now. I (surprisingly) liked it , but the pants? Seriously can’t believe, what were the thinking. :o hmy_tb:

  • flicker

Does anyone except maybe his mother even care what’s on Matt’s setlist?

He’s the only one I really care about. The others are only mildly interesting.

  • clearone

Does anyone except maybe his mother even care what’s on Matt’s setlist?

Yes actually. I’m looking forward to seeing Matt.

  • JAG

This was the night that I fell hook, line and sinker for Adam . He’s intoxicating !

  • Belle

I thought the same thing at the time. But watching the show again, I noticed that the crowd went crazy for Kris. My husband and son seemed to always like him. I just didn’t get it because I was head over heels for Adam. It’s all so funny and fun now. I really liked this season.

People working on the show always said that the loudest reaction was always for Adam, even in the run-throughs. The other contestants also noted that he always had the biggest number of banners in the audience.

Sadly nothing really points to Kris’s apparent popularity. Oh, let me think ………………….. three syllables and sounds like what Noah built in the floods and what he used to cut the wood.

That said, Remember the Time is my favourite of Kris’ performances because it lacks the pretentiousness that he adopted in some of his later ones.

  • Belle

I agree that Adam and Alison had the best performances of the night.

I think that Alison was great, but after rewatching this show, I think she would have been better off if she had done a MJ song that she could relate to and that more people know. ‘Give in to Me’ wasn’t even released as a single in the U.S. Maybe something like ‘Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough’ .

IMO with just a few different song choices here and there, Alison would have been in the final.

I’d add Matt to the list of best performances of the night too.

Allison has admitted that she had no idea what Michael Jackson song to choose and Kris suggested GTIM to her.

I think Allison should have been in the final regardless of song choices. I don’t think any of her song choices were totally off.

  • elw

In retrospect Lil and Danny were very good, I was surprised when I rewatched the show. Adam of course stood out as the star, but the only ones that could even come close to him were Allison and Danny (with Lil a close fourth). I like Kris as a person, but he was NOT the best by a long shot.

  • JazzRocks

The show was mostly the way I remembered it & my reactions were pretty much the same as originally. Except that I had forgotten how bad Anoop was that night. Adam was the standout as always & Kris was somewhere in the middle of the pack, which is where he was for me the entire season.

And I agree that Alexis should have made the tour instead of Michael.

  • weareallinnocent

Watched the show and I’ve not read comments yet. A few observations:

This appears to be Lil’s high water mark. I don’t recall her performing as well at any future point. I think Simon screwed with her psyche here (and she let him) and it proved ultimately to be her demise.

To me, Kris’ Remember the Time forecasts the future — his reworked, and much better received version of Heartless. I had flashbacks and, in part, saw and heard the exact same effect with Remember the Time that I did with Heartless. I think maybe this came too early on for folks to fully appreciate, just as Ring of Fire did for Adam. (Not in the same way, of course…)

It was interesting, and imo appropriate, that they edited out Kara’s reference to MJ — IIRC I think she’d prefaced the edited remark with “I don’t know where MJ is right now…” before complimenting Adam saying MJ would have loved what he did. Good call Fox and AI. That would have been awkward and eery, not the desired tone of the tribute.

I saw distinctly what others referred to as “the moment Adam became a star.” I’d not before noticed the change in his disposition and confidence from the beginning verse to when he jumped to stagefront. But WOW, that was striking, and he never went back to the “old Adam” after that either. Very observant for those who noticed it previously.

Allison was fantastic, but then I’ve always loved that song (and female rockers with gravelly voices.) So no surprise there!

All in all, great show. I didn’t even hate “Beat It” like I did the first time around. And, cynic that I am, I sort of wondered if they’d auto-tuned some of our pitchy peeps since I didn’t seem to notice as much off-key singing this time around either. :-)

I hope Michael enjoyed it too. May he RIP.

  • http://www.twilightslo.com Mateja

I totally agree. I was surprised how confident and happy she was during her TOP 13 performance. In my opinion, she decided to try out for AI a few years too late. She is ‘old school’ AI contestant that could do very well in seasons 1-6. Now AI is more song arrangement contest than a singing competition.

  • Mary102

I was so happy Fox aired this special! I miss watching AI every week so much, and it was a great way to see everyone from the very beginning. My big impressions from it (roughly from best to worst):

    * Allison and Adam kicked ass! – imo they were the best of the night. I can’t believe Allison is only 16 (or was) and performing like that, with such confidence and excellent control and stage presence. The song wasn’t the best (jmo) but she really gave it 110%.

And Adam – oh, Adam = even if he wasn’t as happy with that performance, pitch-wise, the level of ferocity and energy he attacked that piece with was absolutely brilliant. And he immediately stood out as one of the best on the show.

    * Kris = nice voice, but I’m sorry, I could hardly remember him after he sang (though I loved the fact that he and Adam were both rocking the plaid shirt in this show – ahh, early Kradam moment ;-) )

    * Danny = I remembered PYT being better than this, but in this performance he just seemed really pitchy, dawg (for me, for you). But he had a lot of energy and enthusiasm, which was commendable.

    * Lil = hideous outfit, but otherwise, not bad. Still, it left me and my family wondering how far she fell in just a few weeks, from being one of the chosen 3, to someone they couldn’t dump fast enough. She’s talented though, but I think she lost her way in subsequent weeks.

    * Megan = oh, dear. This was actually one of her best, and I missed the CAW CAW – but, otherwise, yeah, this was one of her BEST, nuf said

    * Michael = better than I remembered – again, this was one of his best (though that’s not saying much).

    * Matt = Not bad, but, as Simon said, hard to go after Adam. Definitely one of his better performances, but I wasn’t completely wowed either.

    * Alexis = wow, she is really really tiny, which makes the clothes and “dirtiness” just a little more disturbing. She sounded pretty good, put a lot of energy into it, but the song was a little too big for her.

    * Scott = Oh, dear = major pitch problems. Yeah, I voted for Scott early in the competition, and he’s a sweet guy, but I hate to say it, without the disability, he would NOT have made even top 36 imo.

    * Jasmine = yeah, we already have one precocious 16 year old, and she sings and performs CIRCLES around you, so, bye bye. (Not a bad performance, but just not very memorable either. And zippo personality.)

    * Jorge = sorry we have to say good-bye, but this performance showed why he didn’t last very long.

    * Anoop = oh, dear. That was SO bad. The worst part is that Beat It (the original) is so strong, powerful, angry, ferocious – and Anoop couldn’t be further from that, personality-wise. So he tried to “play” bad, and just came off really really badly. The matrix background and bizarro parachute jacket didn’t help.

  • Squirrely

There is a lot of focus on how you change the song lately. Some songs don’t need any tampering.

  • Mary102

well i just noticed they cut out the phone numbers. so i guess they were not too lazy. lol

LOL! I SO wanted to vote last night ;-) Anyone with me? AI withdrawl setting in, I guess.

I remember this was the week with the Alexis phone number voting issue (in that she had to get a different number because #13 was already being used by an, um, “adult” service.)

  • calimari

I had forgotten just how awful this top 13 was. Meghan was somehow slightly better than I remembered her and, with the right songs and some training, she could do something w/ that voice. Sarver was far worse than I remembered. Watch the little recap blurb at the end. In that 15 seconds he scrinches his face up into all sorts of weird expressions. I couldn’t even sit through Scott. Beyond boring. I think Jorge should have actually stayed on longer than a few of those folks – at least he had a decent voice. Adam and Allison were the best ones by a long shot. I couldn’t watch Matt after Adam either. No way to stand out after Adam, IMO.

  • hwc

Sadly nothing really points to Kris’s apparent popularity.

In fairness, we couldn’t have known, at that point in the season, the ultimate strength of the Anybody But That Gay Guy voting.

The photos of Adam had just broken and the media articles asking whether America was ready for a gay Idol were just starting to appear. We got the answer to that in the top 5 week when the strength of the Anybody But That Gay Guy vote pushed him to the bottom two with Matt on the heels of one of the classic performances in Idol history, Feelin Good.

The whole season revolved around whether Danny, Matt, or the kid who won could get to the finals and consolidate the entire Anybody But The Gay Guy vote.

  • ross

People working on the show always said that the loudest reaction was always for Adam, even in the run-throughs.

I have heard various opinions on that. This was from a blogger who attended final 2 night.

But once I got into the theatre, I got my first indication that Kris could win this thing. The warm-up act guy shouted out both singers’ names and the reaction to Kris was clearly more boisterous.

    Here’s the blog: http://blogs.mercurynews.com/aei/tag/kris-allen/

About Michael Jackson’s passing: I was never much of a fan until Kris got me interested in his music. It was Kris’s interpretations of the songs and the fact that he said MJ was one of his biggest influences that got me listening to MJ. I think Adam and Anoop have said the same thing. Who knows how many other young talents he has influenced, and will be influencing in the future?

  • YankeeFan08

I fell in love with Adam all over again last night. He truly is a star and in a league of his own. Danny and Allison were also good but didn’t come close to Adam’s performance. Alexis should not have been cut so soon. I would have liked to see more of her. She was edgy and interesting. None of the others interested me at all then and still don’t now.

After Adam sang and got a positive review it almost looked like he had a tear in his eye, he seemed sort of relieved, but also beyond happy. Like he was thinking: This singing career thing may actually work out! (By then musical theatre was becoming old hat and this was in reality probably his last chance to follow his dream for a solo career.)

MY mom didn’t start watching season 8 until towards the end and never got to see this performance show. I live on the east coast and she lives on the west so at around midnight my time my phone rings with my 60 yr. old mom screaming “OH MY GOD I JUST LOVE HIM, ADAM IS SOO AMAZING FORGET THE REST OF THEM WHY CAN’T THEY JUST SHOW HIM ALL NIGHT!!!” I told her “My feelings exactly mom.” Can’t wait till August when I get to see him live on the tour!!!

  • Mary102

hey Mary102′ ¦.Adam says in RS that Black or White was one of his favorite performances. He felt that the singing was great’ ¦I’m not sure where you got the pitchy stuff’ ¦he sounded amazing

There was an online interview (maybe Idolatry) where he said that, while it was one of his fav performances, in terms of it being a very important song choice for him, and very meaningful, he didn’t think it was his best technically-speaking.

This, of course, is on the Adam-scale of singing – which means that even though he had “some” minor pitch problems on it (not hitting the notes quite as cleanly, or at least not hitting as much on the center of the notes) as he does on most performances, it was still amazingly good, and imo the best of the night by far.

  • Anya

Loved Kris from the first day. Maybe peeps would appreciate what Kris did with that song if they watched the silliest MJ video ever of Remember the Time with Iman and Eddie Murphy dressed in egyptian garb and MJ wearing white socks and some weirdo egyptian shirt and singing about being on the phone with a bunch of egyptian half naked guards running after him….great stuff!

Hated the pimpage of Adam and Danny even though Danny’s vocal was good on PYT. From then on, Adam oscillated between the Elvis and Rocky Horror Picture Show look and approach and didn’t really bring anything new except for ROF which was very cool. JMO

I loved rewatching the show last night. Was it me or did Adam look noticably thinner back then. His face didn’t have the bloat that it has now. Anyways Adam was amazing. I also loved Kris, Allison and Matt. Even Michael and Lil were decent that night. I was hoping they’d squeeze in Kris’ Man in the Mirror, but they didn’t. If anyone knows where I can download it I’d love to have that. That was one of my favorite Kriss performances.

    Anybody But The Gay Guy

Every time I see this, I keep thinking it’s some new sitcom …

  • mmb

Was so happy to kick back and watch AI last night! But boy, I had forgotten how mediocre to bad some of the top 13 were — at least on that night. I do think that this was Lil’s best finalist performance…I agree that from then on she let Simon’s comments just invade her head and she seemed lost on stage. I had forgotten how great Allison was that night, but I definitely noticed the “h” sounds…she needs to work on that..but man can that girl sing. Kris was unmemorable for me the entire season except for ANS and Heartless, which were indisputably fantastic…on MJ night as with most other nights I found his performances pleasant, but by the end of the show I had completely forgotten them. (Post Idol I think that Kris has emerged as one of the most good-hearted, coolest guys on the planet and I look forward to seeing what he does with his album.) Adam was clearly the star…I agree that BOW wasn’t his best vocal performance but his “performance” and use of the stage and star power were just awesome. I remember the EW “on the scene” guy said that it was 50 times better in person than it appeared on TV, which may have contributed to the judges praise and why some TV viewers thought it was OTT. I suspect that as good as Adam appeared on TV, he was that much better in person. Moving on, I thought Matt was pretty good, and Alexis deserved to be on the tour. However, I think Alexis should not have “dirtied” it up as kara suggested…it didn’t seem natural to her, she looked like she was playing dress up and the whole thing came across as kind of desperate..i did not think her next performance , jolene, was bad and was surprised she was voted off so soon…she was never gonna win but she should have made it farther

when i was growing up, Remember the time came out and for me was my least favourite MJ song, though i was a big big fan. but after Kris’s version i listened to it again and i really got the tune this time. probably the lyrics and the melody of the song was overshadowed by iman and eddie murphy and the ridiculous costume MJ wore for that video but now i actually like the song.

And what with Kris being in the bottom 3 every single week. It had to be a major Anti-Adam conspiracy probably involving tweens.

I don’t think there is any conspiracy, but there is a geographic trend in AI when it comes to winners. I think Adam and Allison suffered from being from California. This has been discussed mucho times. AI contestants who come from the West Coast have yet to win. There just isn’t that small town rallying cry, “let’s get one of our own the crown,” mentalilty. Arkansas organized in a big way for Kris, and I bet it was alot fun to be at one of those stadium voting events. If I lived there, I would want to go! But alas, I live in Los Angeles. Heck, we are one of the biggest cities in the country and we don’t even have the passion to push for our own professional football team.

So, no conspiracy here on why Adam lost, but by the same token, I don’t believe people can say “America chose Kris over Adam.” The AI voting system is flawed, and I think this is something most people agree with.

For me, the outcome is fine, and in a way, as it should be. Kris needed the title to get his name out there. Adam needed to make it to the finale for the exposure. I would have liked Allison to finish third, but she still got here record contract.

  • hwc

And what with Kris being in the bottom 3 every single week. It had to be a major Anti-Adam conspiracy probably involving tweens.

I don’t understand. I don’t think the guy who won was in the bottom three except for Week 5.

I don’t think there was any big conspiracy, just that a large bloc of American Idol voters would have voted for a ham sandwich over That Gay Guy. Was America ready for That Gay Guy? It was the feature entertainment story for weeks and the answer came during the finale.

It’s no big deal. It was obvious after the Top 5 week that Adam couldn’t win American Idol. It probably would have been Donny Gorkey were it not for The Scream.

Simon: “It’s OK to be artistic but not on THIS SHOW”. This was the WTF line of the whole season, maybe all seasons.

After watching this again, I really think Danny was the best. His voice is so good and has such a rich texture to it. People say he doesn’t dance good, but imo he has good rhythm in his dancing, and has potential to dance well with lessons.

Matt was very good and did not get the praise he deserved.

This was one of Lil’s better performances.

Jasmine was better than they said. It was obvious she was cannon fodder, and there the judge’s threw her under the bus. She has great potential.
    Scott was good, but boring.
Jorge has a sweet voice, but over his head in the competition.
Allison was good, but this was definitely not one of her best performances.
Michael had one of his best here.
Alexis should have stayed in the competition longer, really good voice, but she seems awkward with her movements.

Kris didn’t stand out much here, I agreed with Simon’s critique, the guitar playing on this song was clumsy looking.
Anoop’s song made me cringe. He did himself no favor with that performance. He was always hit or miss.
His best was “You were always on my mind”.
He made that song his own and didn’t get enough credit.

Adam was very over rated and over praised.
No denying his talent, but after watching this rerun, I could see that it is his performance style and charisma that stands out with him more than his singing.
His singing especially on this song was so broadway sounding&shouty, and the tone just isn’t pleasing to the ear.
I’ve liked a few of his songs on the show, without the scream and broadway voice.
    He has great pipes.
But imo, Adam was the one who got the OTT tongue bath and praise like he was the best singer in all the world, and he is no where near that.
And I loved watching this song Megan did again. It looked so corny but fun.
Simon was so right that if people tuned in and saw it, they would think AI lost their minds for a singing competition. She does have some potential. I missed the “caw caw” the first time, but it was ridiculously funny to hear it.

Adam officially was crowned a star that night. and rightly so. During Top 36, Paula became a huge (HUGE) fan, Randy really liked him (Fall Out Boy meets Twilight, etal), Simon was torn “(End note was terrific; I thought the beginning was horrible”), and Kara liked him. However…they all loved him (as we saw) after BoW,and Paula loved him every week after. As for the others, Kara was confused a lot, Randy wasn’t a huge theatrical fan, e.g., Feeling Good, which I *loved*, though he thought RoF was terrific, and liked Rocker!Adam, and Simon wavered here and there. After BoW, I was hooked, and couldn’t wait to see what he would sing every week. Funniest comments: After FG, when Randy mentioned his theatricality and Simon said it was like complaining that a cow mooed. ;)

I could NOT remember Kris after that performance (as a matter of fact, I couldn’t remember until I watched last night ), but he really grew on me as the weeks went on. He became the David Cook of the season with his interpretations like Heartless (IMO) and gaining greater and greater stage presence. I was never a huge Lil fan (pimpage with her was just annoying to me), tho this was her strongest performance. After that, nooo. I thought Danny was very good as well, along with Allison and Matt (not his fault he went after Adam, SIMON. I liked Alexis, though closing the show did not help her (pimpage only goes so far), I was bored by Scott, I disliked Sarver, and knew Jasmine and Jorge were going home. Oh, and Alexis was *told* by Kara to get down and dirty, and Kara continued to be crass with her, so how was that *her* fault? Personally, I thought she looked really cute. Kris was really bashful, and he *did* gain confidence through the weeks. Adam was really touched by the reception to BoW, then was clearly unhappy about the reaction to RoF, and, as he has said on a number of occasions, decided to be much more deliberate about his song choices (e.g., picking the stripped down and oh-so-awesome ToMT the following week). I do not think he had one bad week, though PTFM and IICHY were my least favorite performances.

*I* care about Matt’s set list. ;) For many weeks, my favorites were Adam and Matt (then Allison and finally Kris joined the list, as Danny dropped off). But I don’t think Allison was ever going Top 3: I was not sure who would join Adam and Danny, but I wasn’t sure it was going to be Kris till we got closer (maybe Top 7? Definitely Top 5).

It’s nice to know that Matt reads your blog, MJ! :) Major kudos. I bet Anoop does, too.

Matt and Anoop’s posts are awesome, and it was great that Allison and Anoop both tweeted that they watched the show last night. (Anoop actually tweeted twice.) I honestly think that Adam and Kris have been told to tweet with precaution (Adele show? Plums? Really? Caring?)

I am so excited for the Tour to begin. Maybe I will care more about S9 after Adam and Kris release their albums…I sure don’t care right now.

It’s no big deal. It was obvious after the Top 5 week that Adam couldn’t win American Idol. It probably would have been Donny Gorkey were it not for The Scream.

I actually believe Adam was in the B2 during Rat Pack week because of the Adam/Allison/Kris vote splitting. A lot of Adam fans were also fond of Allison especially, and thought she was in real danger of being kicked off, so you had a lot of split votes to keep her safe, thus resulting in her being in the top 2 that week, and Adam being in the bottom (sort of like when Daughtry got kicked off, because so many just assumed he was safe).

I think it also helped explain why Allison got kicked off the next week (Adam fans terrified of another B2 or worse scenario, so they only voted for him).

I personally agree with Adam that he probably wouldn’t have gotten to Top 2 in the first place if the “gay issue” was really so important (after all, he started the Top 13 with the photo leak, O’Reilly crap, and performing a very edgy, anti-idol take on RoF – if he survived all of that, he could pretty much survive anything, imo).

Also, as far as Kris’s win is concerned, I think someone else made a good point of stating that, in the context of Top 13, Kris was actually just kind of ok, while Adam stole the show = that made it so much easier for Kris to keep getting better, while Adam, though always excellent, had already set the bar so high.

  • BeckyMD

ITA. I hope at post-Idol stage by working with stellar writers/producers, Adam can re-invest and out-grow himself and continue surprising us.

He said his other choice in MJ week was thriller. I love that song and really want to see how he could’ve interpret it. Guess we’ll never know…

  • Tara

“My memory: This was the first night I was struck by how Adam looked like he was headlining his own concert, while everyone else looked like good (but karaoke) singers. The way the crowd reacted, my own racing heart when he took the stage. The guy owned that place, and after this night he owned me as a fan. Love his emotional humility when everyone adores him, like he never expected that in a million years.”

I felt this way too. When he came walking/strutting to the camera. That was it. I was hooked. What a presence. That is one sexy man.

I can’t believe I was actually nervous for him ON A RERUN! I am hopeless. I don’t even know the guy and I never will! So crazy.

In case you are still reading Matt I have some unsolicited advice. Stay sexy, stay sultry. That business at the end of the song did nothing but snap me out of my otherwise pleasant dream of you singing to me from our pillows :)

“He said his other choice in MJ week was thriller. I love that song and really want to see how he could’ve interpret it. Guess we’ll never know”

I can’t imagine Thriller without the dancing/on a tv show. I’m not sure Adam is up to that type of choreography in such a short time. He would have had to come up with something. Can’t just walk around and sing that song, imho. But yes, his vocals would have been so good… I have a ton of things I would love to hear him sing.

  • girlygirl

    Hollygo9:

Kris was in the bottom 3 of the voting once all season — that was on Rat Pack Week. The bottom 3 that week was Matt, Adam and Kris.

Just because he was never pimped by the judges doesn’t mean he didn’t have a lot of support from the fans from the start.

Also, let’s go on What Not to Sing and look at the ratings for the individual performances for Season 8 (the Allison/Adam duet received a rating of 86, but isn’t listed here by me since it wasn’t an individual performance)

Highest-Rated Performances of AI8 (per WNTS)

Mad World Adam Lambert 92 (Yr of Birth Wk)

Aint No Sunshine Kris Allen 88 (Finale)

Tracks Of My Tears Adam Lambert 85 (Motown Wk)

Aint No Sunshine Kris Allen 85 (Top Downloads Wk)

She Works Hard For The Money Kris Allen 85 (Disco Wk)

Heartless Kris Allen 85 (Top 3 Wk)

Always On My Mind Anoop Desai 84 (Grand Ole Opry Wk)

So Small Matt Giraud 84 (Grand Ole Opry Wk)

So, of the eight highest rated individual performances of the season (according to WNTS’ system), Kris had 4, Adam had 2 — no one else had more than 1

  • suebrody

If Danny had won Idol, that would have been the end for me and millions of other viewers…thank you for not winning, Danny.

  • terfra

If Danny had won Idol, that would have been the end for me and millions of other viewers’ ¦thank you for not winning, Danny.

Yes I agree, it probably ended up the way it was supposed to. I hope all the idols can do well though.

  • Suzanne

Ah . . . I think Hollygo was just being sarcastic with that comment about Kris being in the bottom every week. Obviously, he wasn’t. Hence, I believe, her point was–that the argument that the public would vote for anyone over the gay guy is just not supportable. (1) The gay guy did fantastic in the competition and (2) the winner also did fantastic in the competition the whole way through. It just seems clear that people were really voting for Adam and Kris the whole time from the beginning. (And for Danny too.)

I think this MJ week may have been Kris’ 2nd weakest performance of the year, ahead of only the Year of Birth show. Every other week besides those 2 he was in the good to great range ‘” so he showed lot of improvement as the season went on, while many of the other contestants either got worse or were just way more inconsistent.

Yeah–I agree. I really liked Man in the Mirror and hoped that Kris would be amazing for Top 13 week. He did well, but the guitar was inaudible and that plaid shirt really put him in a cornfield for me. He sang well but he looked so small on that stage.

  • idolbeat

Loved watching the show without having to vote all night!

I loved Adam, Allison and Matt. Matt’s comments were rushed – he deserved more time on that performance – it was better than solid. I would love for someone to see how many times Matt followed Adam in performing. For me those were the two best performances, with two totally different styles. I think I have B&W and HN on my ipod back to back too!

Based on the top13, I would have had Adam, Matt, Allison, Lil, Danny and Kris in that order as the top finalists.

I wish there would have been an intro and closure on Michael but I bet he loved watching it dedicated to him.

All in all, a great show. Thanks AI for the rebroadcast!

  • Suzanne

I’m not sure Adam is up to that type of choreography in such a short time.

Adam has done A LOT of performing in the past. I mean, like, a decade of constant performance. He may have done Thriller before.

  • ross

Um, pretty sure hollygo9 was kidding, folks.

girlygirl, thank you for those stats. I was also aware, during the season, that many critics rated Kris as best of the night when he sang the songs you mentioned. Plus, he was only in the bottom three once, near the end of the season. So I kept waiting for the judges to start treating him like a front runner. The fact that they didn’t, ever, was weird, but I got used to it and just kept voting.

As for weight, I think Adam and Danny gained, Kris actually seemed to lose some. Now he’s gained a bit back, I tink.

  • anovich

I know it has been pointed out many times and MJ I apologize for the repetition, but Hollygogo9 really bothered me by her comment regarding Kris being in the bottom every week, when in fact he was only in the bottom 3 during the top 5 week – which was the same week that Adam was also in the bootom 3.

Please be factually accurate in the future. Thanks :)

  • Q3

One of the most interesting things about rewatching this show was hearing the judges comments. You could really see how they tried to manipulate the outcome of the show even in the beginning.

They were too positive about Adam, Danny, Matt, Lil, Scott and Sarver. Underrated Alison. And through a lifeline to Anoop and Megan. I added ratings based on my impression of how the judges rated each contestant:

Adam – Adam was the best but the judges, particurly Paula, were just too OTT about his performance. Randy was ready to go to the recording studio and Paula had him in the final. The judges only got more “ga ga” about Adam as the season went on.

Danny – his vocals on PYT were good but not as great as the judges were saying. And Paula picked him for the final! This would be repeated for weeks to come.

Alison – Simon’s comment about her being dark was just a bit strange. It was just the first of many weeks where Simon unfairly criticized her style/image and really seemed to ignore her clear vocal ability. This would also be repoeated as the season went on — Simon particurlarly would criticize her “style’ and personality.

Matt – The judges comments were for the most part nice and fair. In fact, the judges almost ignored his vocal weakness in this performance and the fact that he missed almost all the high notes.

Kris – The performance was OK and the judges were for the most part nice and fair. Simon made the only really negative comment which was about Kris’ awkness, which was a bit mean but true. And, although Kris was vocally better than Matt, he also missed some of the high notes on this song but it only got a minor mention by Randy.

Lil – The only real negative comments were about her outfit and well deserved (from Simon). But the judges complemented her singing and didn’t really focus much on either the tired arrangement and missed notes. Just the first week of sometimes unwarrented generous comments about Lil.

Sarver – Just wasn’t good in my opinion but the judges were basically positive. It was really clear they wanted Sarver to make it through.

Scott – Just the beginning of the lack of critical judging of Scott’s performances. They were basically positive about this performance and focused a lot on his piano playing.

    - Alexis – Judges were right. She was just too OTT and even Paula criticized her for it.

    – Jasmine – Judges were right. The performance wasn’t that good IMO and the judges were correct in their criticism.

    – Jorge – Judges were right. He was mostly OK, bad song choice and bad arrangement. But the performance wasn’t completely bad. (IMO In the follow-up discussion, Jorge’s lack of an answer for why he picked the song and lack of knowledge/respect for MJ was just the deathnail for him.)

    — Anoop, Megan – They were really not too good and the judges were really correct with their criticism. But in both cases they made positive comments about their previous performances making it look like they wanted them both to survive.

  • hollygo9

but Hollygogo9 really bothered me by her comment regarding Kris being in the bottom every week, when in fact he was only in the bottom 3 during the top 5 week

I was apparently failing at sarcasm with my comment.
Suzanne’sanalysis of my point is spot on. For Kris to be the ‘Anti-Adam’ candidate, he would have had to have been the ‘Anti-Adam’ candidate since week one since his lack of trips to the bottom 3 would indicate that he had a fanbase of his very own.

Some people really like Kris Allen musically. Some people really don’t like Adam Lambert musically.

  • canuck

Also, can you tell me how to do quotes on this site. Seem to be having a hell of a time doing it.

  • lucy

This would also be repoeated as the season went on ‘” Simon particurlarly would criticize her ‘style’ and personality.

Never could figure out Simon’s problem with Allison. Over the years, he’s repeatedly expressed his frustration with the pageant-girl aura of virtually all the other teen girls on the show. Then he gets a teen girl who is the antithesis of pageanty, is very real, fun, normal. I expected him to love Allison because she not only has a great voice, skills, a work ethic, but is so emphatically self-directed, straightforward, a little rough around the edges, so very much not a pageant girl. But the whole season it almost seemed as if he was accusing her of not being pageanty enough, in a funny kind of way.

  • jaimej40

I watched the show last night to see if I felt the same as I did the first time. I realized that Kris and Allison definitely grew as performers since Top 13. Neither of them stood out to me. I didn’t get Black or White yet again… I didn’t get Adam until Motown week and I thought maybe my initial viewing was skewed or I didn’t pay enough attention, but I think I did. Just not my cup of tea. My favorite of the night was still Matt. While I think the point of AI is to grow as a performer, I still get why he was my favorite from week 1 on…

  • hwc

Of course the guy who won had fans. That’s not mutually exclusive with consolidating a large Anybody But the Gay Guy bloc.

As for judges pimpage, there’s a simple solution. I DVR’d the show and skipped the judge’s comments and backstories each week.

  • sallyas1

It was fun to rewatch the performances. Wish the network would have had more “in memory of” for Michael than their very few pictures. Maybe replace the judge comments with interviews from each Idol on what MJ meant to them. But that would have taken time to put together.

Adam – Best of the night. Commanded the stage better than any other (though Lil and Danny worked the stage pretty well as well). Vocals perfect. Loved his second half / “harder” edge to the song. His stage presence further in the season just improved as well. (the Adam “red stairs”, the Mad World chair, etc.)

Danny – his best vocals of the season were PYT. I always thought his “white boy dance” was fun. And it worked here. I wouldn’t have been all hyped on him, like Paula was, but he was quite good.

Alison – I agreed with Simon in that the song was dark for her. But that is her musical style. She sounded great, looked ok. Interesting with the comments. She commented on Simon’s commentary, and Paula “shushed” her. Hmmm – maybe the reason Alison kept her mouth shut in later weeks.

Matt – It was good. Not my favorite MJ song. Matt didn’t do any better with it. Too much vocal gymnastics / high notes, and missed at that.

Kris – I liked this. Liked the guitar accompaniment to it. But highlighted one thing for me – many of his future performances were very similar.

Lil – I think her best vocal performance. Worked the stage well. The look was awful though – no on those white pants and a big ole flower on the shoulder not good.

Sarver – Oops missed it – slept right through it. I always found him snoringly boring.

Scott – Good vocal. Good piano. But highlighted Scott’s lack of vocal power.

Alexis – I kinda liked it. Over the top yes. But funny to sing a tiny thing like her sing Dirty Diana. Challenging song choice for her.

Jasmine – Too old. Song choice much too old. Should have gone with ABC or something more young and fun. She looked terrified on the stage. I was glad she went home after this week.

Jorge – Judges were right. He was OK, bad song choice and bad arrangement. Why did he perform a song he had not chosen though. Reaks of him not knowing MJ music, which was the death sign for him. If he didn’t know MJ music, his lack of knowledge of other music was going to be painful. Glad he went out this week.

Anoop – Ouch. Way karaoke. I give him props for performing one of Michael’s most recognizable performances. But this performance made me wish we had a battle of most well known MJ songs – Anoop’s Bad vs Adam’s Thriller. Thriller would have won hands down, and Anoop would have likely gone home this week. Anoop is just lucky Jasmine and Jorge were worse.

Megan – Worked for her. I was never a fan of hers, but the quirky fun song worked for her. I think for the most part she probably had the best song choice of the night.

  • weareallinnocent

For Kris to be the ‘Anti-Adam’ candidate, he would have had to have been the ‘Anti-Adam’ candidate since week one

I’m not saying I adhere to the theory, nor do I find it helpful (or even interesting) to revive the old discussion, but to this, I say, not really. :-)

hwc‘s continuing, oft-posted point seems to be there’s at least a possibility that a motivated bloc of voters had an “anybody but the gay guy” sentiment controlling their votes. No one says those voters picked a horse on day one and road him loyally home through the finale, instead of possibly picking a seemingly viable anti-Adam contestant (ahem, Danny) and riding that horse until he fell back too far to catch up — at which point, those voters changed horses. Or, more likely (so the theory goes), the “anybody but the gay guy” voters were spread among a variety of more acceptable Idols until the finale, at which point they gravitated naturally to Kris, the good guy, guy next door. :-)

That said, I think an equally acceptable view is that AI has a certain viewership, and an even more limited votership, and among its voting viewers, more preferred Kris and his music to Adam and his.

At the end of the day, I believe the result is the right one for many reasons, not the least of which is that imo we’d NEVER have seen a RS cover and story like the one that we did if Adam had won. NEVER in a million years. Nor would TPTB be willing to work to brand him the way that they are — The Wild Idol, etc. And I also believe that the result gives Adam a bit more freedom (how much is yet to be seen) with his music. Here’s to hoping….

Like I said though, Kris appeared to be under-appreciated early on, but like a fine wine… LOL

I watched the MJ Week replay only to see Scott perform again. I loved his performance even more this time. I’ll be watching him perform live on the tour next week, a dream coming true. Yes!

  • cookcricket

I think the kid who won (aka Kris Allen) represents the musicality and awesome storytelling phrasing of artists like Gillian Welsh and David Rawlings who do not have huge personalities and are little known to mainstream music at this time.

  • hwc

I think comparing the kid who won to Gilian Welch or David Rawlings is a huge stretch on every level: performance skills, musicianship, encyclopedic knowledge of American music traditions and influences, and top shelf song-writing talent. Welch is a Berklee trained singer/songwriter, Rawlings is a Berklee trained guitarist. They bring sophisticated skills to a simple form of music. They epitomize the kind of music and artists I listen to almost exclusively these days. Seeing Welch and Rawlings perform live was one of the most enchanting concerts I’ve ever seen.

The kid who won, IMO, has none of what Welch and Rawlings bring to the table other than the fact that he plays a acoustic guitar (not terribly well) and sings. If he has any of what they have, he’s kept it very well hidden. For me, he’s a run of the mill one-trick pony college coffee house guitar strummer/singer without an interesting or deep set of influences. I don’t even see him approaching Ray Lamontagne territory, let alone someone like a Ryan Adams or a Jeff Tweedy.

His performance on this week’s MJ theme show is a perfect example. I gave him the DVR hook halfway through the song the first time the show aired. It was amateur-hour to me. Really sloppy. I actually thought Matt was the second best this week, based almost entirely (as I later came to realize) on his choice of a truly great song rather than his ability to consistently deliver the goods. Donny showed flashes of a good voice buried in a totally out-of-control mess of a performance.

  • Mary102

One of the most interesting things about rewatching this show was hearing the judges comments. You could really see how they tried to manipulate the outcome of the show even in the beginning.

ITA. This was one of my biggest problems with the judges this season. I actually didn’t like Adam at first because of the over-pimpage, then, when he softened it up, I could tell he was the real deal, and really started loving him more. But I hated how bad it got mid-season when they loved certain contestants who just didn’t seem to be that impressive. In general, so many of the comments seemed way off this season. (The Allison disdain also bothered me).

And I agree that, based on the original “chosen 3″ (Danny, Lil, Adam) – Simon and co. seem to have an unnatural fascination with purely big voices. But, I must say that it doesn’t matter much, because the voters chose differently in the end.

I know judging will always be subjective, but I hope next year they temper their comments (especially in the early rounds) a little bit more, to keep things from being so blatantly manipulative. (what? Simon be subtle? :rolleyes_wp: )

  • spring2009

Adam is the ONLY idol this season that has the whole package.

    a) he can sing
    b) he knows how to work a stage
    c) he has a fascinating back story
    d) he is very comfortable in interviews and with the industry.
    e) he is good looking

None of the rest of the idols have the complete package. This is why the industry and the media love him. In all of the media interviews he is completely at ease and confident.

I understand that musically he might not appeal to some, but he IS the complete package.

  • hwc

Or, more likely (so the theory goes), the ‘anybody but the gay guy’ voters were spread among a variety of more acceptable Idols until the finale, at which point they gravitated naturally to Kris, the good guy, guy next door. :-)

That’s the way I see it. He won because he was so bland and non-polarizing that he was perfectly suited to consolidate all the Anybody But the Gay Guy vote. Add that to his own sizeable and enthusiastic following who embrace the idea of a mellow acousic singer winning Idol, and you have an unstoppable freight train to the crown, just as we would have seen in a Donny/Adam finale.

I’m not even saying that the Anybody But the Gay Guy voters disliked Adam. In fact, I think many of them were quite taken with his performances. They just felt more “comfortable” voting for the guy next door. It’s only my opnion, but I believe this is why we have this over the top bromance storyline.

  • hwc

I think all of that was in place long before the final voting. The better argument, I think, is that the final vote was irrelevant to Season 8 of American Idol, its storylines, and the career trajectories of the participants.

I actually don’t subscribe to the theory that the kid who won benefits from winning. I actually think it hurts him going forward. He would have been better off career-wise to have finished second and not been saddled with the mantle of the guy who won Adam Lambert’s season of American Idol. I kind of do subscribe to theory that losing helps Adam. It gives him the aura of being “too much for American Idol” which allows him to embrace the show and move on at the same time.

I always found the Bromance thing to be very annoying and a way to have Adam share the spotlight that rightfully should belong to Kris. I just say that because Kris had the most votes in the end and yes, I agree that he may have been the choice of many because he was the non-polarizing contestant.

I recognize that some may genuinely like his style and abilities. I see Kris more behind the scenes as a gifted arranger but not really as a front man.

  • weareallinnocent

Interestingly enough, I don’t see those two points as being all that different. And, I totally agree with yours. The key to my point was that I believe the cover and story probably would have been a bit different, less provocative and sexual, more palatable to “America” (i.e., the AI votership) and its Idol, not that they would not have happened at all. I agree those likely were planned long before the finale.

Maybe not, but AI knows its audience demographics. Not winning has likely allowed Adam to be packaged somewhat differently than how he presented on the show, with the theory being, well the AI demo didn’t choose him but he’s still wildly popular, so we’re more free to throw him in all his glory out there. Because, somebody — and it seems an enormous number of somebodies — out there appear to seriously dig the guy and his mad talent! :-)

Well, not seeing Kris’s musicality and artistry is where YMMV, hwc. No he may not be on that level, but the reason you know so much about GW and DR is because you researched them and you seem to know virtually nothing about Kris. Not to mention you saw them live, which is a whole different animal. IMO, he is gifted. Perhaps if he had their level of training he would surpass them.

Kris is not on their level, and may never be in the same way Adam is not on MJ’s level and may never be. Both Kris and Adam have amazing talents coming off of this cheesy TV show. I hope they both do well in the music industry and I believe they both have the potential to earn respect.

I’m know I can’t convince you of anything, so I won’t try. (Aside from the fact is against mj’s rules:)) However, I believe my husband is one of Gillian Welsh’s biggest fans and he was also “enchanted” by seeing them live. He also saw what Kris had to offer on the show and mentioned that his album may very well be the first AI album he ever buys.

    Sarah:

Here’s a little sampling of Gilian Welch and David Rawlings.

Welch is the daughter of the Carol Burnett Show’s long time musical directors. She went to a performing oriented private school in Santa Monica — along with quite a few well known actors (incuding Jack Black, Zoey Deshamel, Kate Hudson, and Gweneth Paltrow). She turned down Princeton to go to UC-Santa Cruz and party in a punk rock band, before ending up at Berklee and falling in love with bluegrass.

Personally, I don’t see any resemblence to what the American Idol winner does.

I think the kid who won (aka Kris Allen) represents the musicality and awesome storytelling phrasing of artists like Gillian Welsh and David Rawlings who do not have huge personalities and are little known to mainstream music at this time.

Yes, I agree. I’m an Adam fan but I really like Kris and appreciate his musical talent.

I really think it is time to leave the comparisons behind. I really don’t care who had a higher rating on WNTS, or read any more vote analysis, or any of the other fanwar s***.

I had a good time rewatching this show, and I enjoyed a number of the performances. I am looking forward to seeing my favs in concert, as other fans are looking forward to seeing their favs in concert. But the contest is over — Kris won.

I always found the Bromance thing to be very annoying and a way to have Adam share the spotlight that rightfully should belong to Kris. I just say that…

Maybe, but I personally think appearing together with Adam helps Kris. It brings out his fun side more. I’d never have known he has that side if I hadn’t seen him interact with Adam. Until I started to see that, Kris was still under the radar for me. He is not a boring person. The things he says are spot-on and witty. I likey. This coming from a die-hard Adam fan. Adam just overshadows everyone else in the room. But then I think in some ways it helped Kris to be compared against Adam. You know, kind of like the way fuschia stands out against black or white more than it does against red or purple…I think it defined him more in others’ eyes.

  • Mary102

ITA, GlamGirlLee = the two work very well with each other. Both seem to bring out the best in each other (Adam gets more giggly and lets the snark-monster hide a bit more when Kris is around, and Kris seems much looser and more open with Adam around to play off of.)

I hope we get some of that excellent interaction from the two of them together on tour.

  • cookcricket

who??? hmmm i should start googling n youtubing on them then’ ¦

SarahP, yes I would recommend it. Their style is more bluegrass, though, so be prepared. However, they know how to present a song even better than Kris did on AI. This does not negate Kris’s artistry though, imo.

ETA: lol, looks like hwc was on top of it!

  • Anastasia72071

hey Mary102′ ¦.Adam says in RS that Black or White was one of his favorite performances. He felt that the singing was great’ ¦I’m not sure where you got the pitchy stuff’ ¦he sounded amazing

He said in his idoltry interview that it was a bit shouty.

    BeckyMD
I think it is in his TVGuide interview that he commented on Bow. In his Idoltry interview, he said he might want to do Rof later in the show when people were more ready for non-traditional idol performance. (I may know too well about Adam’s interviews. go facing the wall and meditate)

Correct. It was in Part I of the TV Guide interview with Matt Mitovitch. In response to the question (at the 2:00 mark) “What was your least favourite performance of your run?”, Adam said (and I quote) “The choice of doing BorW was really really great…{snip}… but vocally, from like, a technical standpoint, it was kind of a mess. It was pitchy, it was a little shouty [laughs].”

Ummm yeah. I think I need to meditate a little bit as well. …Just put the Glambert down and back away slowly… LOL

  • hwc

He also saw what Kris had to offer on the show and mentioned that his album may very well be the first AI album he ever buys.

My daughter bought Kelly’s albums, my wife bought Fantasia’s albums, and I bought Taylors albums. Nothing from the last two seasons. I won’t buy anything from Season 8 except Adam’s album, which I don’t really expect to be my cup of tea — although I have turned into a pretty big fan of folk/techno fusion (Beth Orton) and I’m enjoying Goldfrapp and Thievery Corporation on Adam’s recommendation.

Well, not seeing Kris’s musicality and artistry is where YMMV, hwc.

Yeah, I don’t see it at all, but that’s just personal taste. I thought that the Castro kid showed much more creativity and style in a similar vein last year, but was really one-dimensional.

  • Mary102

Ummm yeah. I think I need to meditate a little bit as well. ‘ ¦Just put the Glambert down and back away slowly’ ¦ LOL

Well, I’d say if you had that quote, and the timing, perfectly memorized, without needing to re-watch, then, yeah, you may have a problem :wink_wp:

But like I’m one to talk – giddy last night after just hearing Adam perform again on an AI rerun, then staying up till midnight to catch up on Adam related interviews I missed over the weekend!

  • cookcricket

Folk/techno fusion? Now that sounds interesting….

  • Q3

At the end of the day, I believe the result is the right one for many reasons, not the least of which is that imo we’d NEVER have seen a RS cover and story like the one that we did if Adam had won. NEVER in a million years. Nor would TPTB be willing to work to brand him the way that they are ‘” The Wild Idol, etc.

hwc I think all of that was in place long before the final voting. The better argument, I think, is that the final vote was irrelevant to Season 8 of American Idol, its storylines, and the career trajectories of the participants.

hwc, I agree with you on this one. Everything that is happening for Adam would be playing out the same, win or loose EXCEPT the media frenzy would have been even greater if he had won. And, if he had won, the political press would be more focused on him. It took me a few days after the loss to realize that it was much better for Adam to loose.

I still belive that Adam did not plan on winning — either he didn’t want to win (so it would be easier to position himself without the AI stigma) or he didn’t think he could win and be true to himself artistically and personally.

Adam was very specific about his goal being to get to the Final in a pre-Top 4 interview. Adam clearly stated his reasons for being on Idol long before the final — to get exposure, build a fanbase and get a major recording contact. And he achieve all this.

  • anovich

Second, for those who think that Adam being in interviews with him helps bring out Kris’s personality – have you seen his interviews with Jay Leno, Jimmy Fallon, and his entrance on Ellen? Adam was not present at any of those but you could definitely see Kris’s personality. So I guess I’m agreeing with the people who think that Kris should be doing interviews on his own and doesn’t need Adam – just because he has more of a “quiet” personality doesn’t mean he’s not entertaining on his own.

And third, the season is over – I’m just lookng forward to the fall when both of their albums (and Allison’s) are out. I’m not going to tell anyone that they hae to buy soeone’s album because we all have our own tastes in music, but I do think that all 3 of them have the potential to do well and that there is a place for all of them in the market.

edit: don’t call out other posters

  • hwc

Folk/techno fusion? Now that sounds interesting’ ¦.

Quite. Beth Orton started out with an album released on in Japan recorded with William Orbit – the techno producer who went on to do Madonna’s techno stuff. Orton then hooked up with Ryan Adams and drifted a bit more acoustic folk, but still with techno production that has been the thing in Europe for a while.

The most stunning thing that Orton has done is a duet with Ryan Adams of the Rolling Stones’ Brown Sugar that they released on a free magazine compilation of Stone’s covers. Wow. Talk about interpreting a song. The lyrics are so ugly and hateful, you’ll never be able listen to the Stones version again:

The Ryan Adams duet with Marianne Faithful, English Girls Approximately, was written about Orton.

Well, not seeing Kris’s musicality and artistry is where YMMV,

In my case, I still am open-minded about Kris. His pre-idol independent recordings are not too impressive, but I really liked a few of his AI performances.

IMO he won idol because he had musical talent, and is very attractive and even more likeable. This same combination will help he be commercially successful, but I won’t buy his music because I think he’s nice. It will need to be really good and original.

If Kris is wildly successful, I will be very pleased and not that surprised — because he has consistently exceeded my expectations.

  • cookcricket

Actually I think Kris’s pre-idol stuff is pretty good considering it was a self-done album with him doing the music and that his song writing was only beginning. Masterclass Lady had some very good things to say about some of the songs on his album and seem impressed with his musical ability.

For me, I don’t see buying Adam’s entire album, but if he has some ballads I will probably download some singles. However, I am planning to buy Kris’s based on what he did on the show.

I hope both will do well. :)

  • Q3

I hope both will do well. :)

    I agree!

By the way, following last night’s show, Adam’s Season 8 album went back onto the iTunes Top 100 Album chart. I think it peaked at #74, now at #89.

  • LVanna

IMO he won idol because he had musical talent, and is very attractive and even more likeable.

I think you should win Idol because of “musical talent” but the attractiveness and likeability is just frosting on the cake, so to speak, not a requirement of the prize. Adam has all of these qualities but his talent is superior to everything else. I have tried but cannot connect to Kris so I guess I will just have to pass on him. I do hope he releases an awesome album and that I may change my mind. Being an Adam fan should have nothing to do with this, but I guess it does.

After following Adam this past half year, I am just not interested in any of the other Idols, winner included. Everyone else bores me. JMO I’m sure but I wish all of them the best in their careers, even Danny who totally turns me off, lol.

  • TwigLA

Watching MJ week all over again, I’m reminded why I liked Kris Allen so much. He took a song that I really didn’t care for when done by the original artist and made it enjoyable. It’s a shame that he had done Man in the Mirror the week prior. He was all sorts of awesome with that. I wish they would have included that in this tribute show.

I also agree with others. The top 13 should each have had a small segment talking about how MJ influenced them, their reason for the song they sang, etc. Leave out the judges comments and other voting related stuff.
