Yeah, Melinda’s Best Performance of the Season Was My Funny Valentine. I mean, for me, once an Idol song has been done AMAZINGLY, its very rare for me to enjoy it again.

WHAT IS ADAM SINGING?!?!?!?!?!?! I hope he does That’s Life.

And 1 song each? What, so we can hear more pointless judges comments. Just let Simon talk and the other 3 nod and smile. I hope we at least get good pre-performance packages chocked full of interesting tidbits. Or maybe they will just let Adam sing 2 songs?!?! haha, id like that. and i think many others would too.

That’s what I was thinking Primeminister. Matt is digging himself a hole unless he significantly changes it up. Melinda’s version of MFV was her best of performance of her season. OH well it looks like they want to get rid of Matt. I was hoping he would knock Gokey out but I don’t think so anymore. I am still pissed that they are singing only one song because of the stupid 4th judge and stupid mentor. They don’t really need a freaking mentor. The kids know what to do by now. It should be about them NOT the mentor.

Wow, If that Kris rumor is true.. I’m really disappointed. Don’t get me wrong, I love that song and he’ll probably sing it well. I was just looking forward to something a little more upbeat.

It seems to be a little too much in the same vein as “Falling Slowly” and the Garth song I can’t remember the name of .

I love Melinda’s version but not sure that Matt will get compared, he is a man and is probably going to play the piano.

You took the words right out of my mouth. Melinda sang this song brilliantly, and trust me, Simon, who was a big Melinda supporter, will have not forgotten. He better sing like his life depended on it to get a good comment from Simon with this song.

Well maybe they can let the poor peeps do a full song for a change as well as enduring the judges’ silly comments.

Agreeing with the first two…MFV is not a good choice for Matt. I expected him to go uptempo swing with his song.

Unless he changes it up as Constantine did back in season 4. And although I loved Constantine that night, I don’t think Matt should change it up.

Still…of the top 5, I would least expect Matt to do MFV.

Actually, I’d rather see Kris sing MFV and Matt sing “The Way I Feel Tonight.” Both would do great with those songs. Although I think Kris will still do well tonight.

Regarding “My Funny Valentine”, even Constantine’s version was very popular “back in the day”. And Melinda was praised for a great performance, so the song isn’t exactly fresh Idol fare anymore.

I’m not much of a Melinda Doolittle fan so Matt still has a chance in my mind. I wish Kris had gone for a more up-tempo song, but I guess it’s okay since he did one last week.

I am really disappointed they’ll only be singing one song. I’ve been looking forward to Adam getting two songs for weeks now. I guess that means only one song next week as well. All to fit in another marquee mentor (Jaime Foxx)……AND to expand on judges critiques. Hell – I can tell you what each judge will say specific to each contestant. It’s not like they vary the commentary. Rerun! I say cut them instead à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ or expand the show to 90 minutes.

“My Funny Valentine” was the only performance of Melinda’s that I downloaded (she got to me, haha). That said, that season was kind of a letdown, so I don’t think any of the “moments” will hold up like some of the others from earlier seasons. Not to offend anyone’s favorites, haha.

I really hope Kris sings that, that is one of my favorite love songs. Actually, so are “To Make You Feel My Love” and “Falling Slowly”, haha. He’s picking songs of out my brain! :)

I have it on good authority that Adam will be singing “Feeling Good” by Sammy Davis Jr. He was a member of the Rat Pack, and not only that, but he sang it over the phone at the Adam Lambert celebration event @ Upright Cabaret this past Saturday.

My fiancee and I both heard him sing it, and well – I believe that’s what he’ll sing.
If not, well, then, he’ll have surprised us all, but I just think he will, it’s too close to not say anything about it since we both heard him singing it over the phone =p

Matt, I don’t know. I have respect for Matt but I also have respect for Melinda and Constantine’s version as well. I don’t know if he will top that.

Kris continues to surprise me, like that song. I hope he can change it up and do something different it. As far as I know only Jasmine Trias from Season 3 sang this song and her version was okay – she’s not the greatest singer in the world.

I hope Kris doesn’t go 2nd again, 2nd back to back is not good. He deserves at least 4th or 5th tonight.

I also don’t like the one song deal, we were expecting 2 now we only get 1. Big mistake.

If I were a contestant, I would be so miffed to have prepared two songs and then only got to sing one. Sheesh.

I won’t defend Jamie, but Taylor Hicks sorta won season 5 so it really doesn’t need to be explained….

I hate being shortchanged because the three stooges plus one can’t get their acts together. This takes a bit of the excitement out of it for me. I really don’t like either song choice for either guy. Matt has tread marks for sure, except I am not sure he didn’t commit suicide.

Kris will be fine no matter what, as that is the new script.

Adam could do well with Feeling Good. However, I’m not sure if I would want to sing a cursed song – 2 people in the same week sang Feeling Good – AJ and Leslie of AI 6. They sang that song and they both got eliminated. I don’t think Adam will be eliminated, but that song is kind of iffy.

I dunno “The Way You Look Tonight” depending on the arrangement and singer can come across as dullsville to me. It’s not a naturally dynamic song and it needs a great interpreter.

What, are they choosing his songs? I don’t think it’s such a bad choice for him – it’s a very well-known, well-loved song. Some people might vote for him just because of the song choice. I’m having trouble hearing his voice singing this, but if he manages to not go off the rails with falshitto and too many runs, it could be good.

In case people are wondering where the speculation came from. Saturday, at the “Upright Cabaret Loves Adam Lambert” performance, Adam called in. When they asked him to sing an impromptu song, he sang a few bars of “Feeling Good”.

Some of us have speculated that must be his song choice. But nothing was ever confirmed.

Terrible choice for Kris– way too easy a song, almost totally stepwise and very few skips. Even lousy singers can sing it– remember Diane Wiest in Woody Allen’s Hannah and Her Sisters?

Wish he would have chosen Smoke Gets in Your Eyes– I’m sure some Rat Packer did it. Same stepwise feel, much more dramatic tension in the high notes.

I really hope that Kris doesn’t play his guitar..not so sure this is the best choice for Kris-but I like him and hope he does well.

Matt- Either he will completely fuck it up or he will have a moment…nothing in between.

Adam- I hope my boy sings Muse’s “Feelin’ Good”- he will KILL with that song!

One song each is stupid. I have to wonder if all the production blunders and bad decisions are being done on purpose as some kind of red herring this year. It’s really drawing focus away from the singers, which doesn’t strike me as nice or as fair.

Is Adam really doing “Feeling Good”? I love that song, but I still remember when it knocked out two singers who had done the song in the same week (AJ and Leslie Hunt).

These songs are not uniquely associated with anyone in the Rat Pack. True – at some point they were probably recorded by Sinatra & Co (Sinatra alone must have cut 1000 tracks over his career). But how does that make these song “Rat Pack”.

Here the bottom line – Idol has this list of standards that they have cleared from previous years and they are making the contestants pick from them. Period. Sheesh! The cheapness of this show when it comes to creative material sometimes boggles the mind….

Really? Because I hadn’t even heard of the BAND Muse before this year, let alone that they did a cover of “Feeling’ Good”; and I consider myself generally “with it”.

TPTB seem to care less and less about the happiness of their viewership as the years roll on … only sponsorship, ad placement, the boring judges and bartering away free advertising for what mostly equates to stale or boring mentoring abilities. I mean 17% of the show is what WE”RE going to get tonight of the idols singing besides what they decide to show us in the oftentimes slanted mentoring packages. Irritates the hell outta me.

I’m rooting for Matt, My Funny Valentine is a tricky song to sing. It will help that he probably won’t be tempted to go up into crazy-falsetto territory. Melinda did do an awesome version of MFV but maybe since Matt is a guy it won’t draw too much comparison.

Seriously, at this point I totally trust Adam’s instincts about what works for him and what doesn’t. I think ROF’s sales on itunes show that he may be a little more in touch with the zeitgeist than the judges are. I think there are two things that are contributing to his momentum: I think the country is moving away from Bush’s evangelical Christian outlook, and I think that being gay is not a real big deal anymore. (No flames, please, these are just my opinions.) So down goes Danny, his church supporters go away and sulk, and it’s Adam for the win!

I’m of the same mind as those who think this season is less about the contestants and more about the judges, the mentors and the advertisers. The irony is that this is arguably the strongest and most popular season ever, yet probably the first time in 8 seasons where I don’t feel I know or connect with the contestants outside of their performances. We seem to catch but a 2 minute glimpse of them when they perform (since their intros are now cut). Where are those priceless behind the scenes moments? Where are the spontaneous moments like when Natasha Bedingfield greeted Archie onstage last year? Why did they move them into the mansion if not to capture some great footage?

I agree with Abbysee that we’re definitely being shortchanged.

I hope that Matt does really well tonight. I would like to see him stick around for at least another week preferably two if possible. I don’t think he will make it beyond top 3. I know that Melinda had a really wonderful version of “My funny Valentine”, but I still hope that Matt does a really good job tonight, a good enough job to stick around for another week.

I hope he plays the piano tonight. I won’t like if he goes home tomorrow, because IMO, then the rest of the season will end up being pretty predictable and boring and TPTB would have gotten the desired top 4 that they want. I hope that Matt can shake things up and put a stop to that.

I hope Adam doesn’t do Muse’s version. Matthew Bellamy is my favorite vocalist out there, and I know Adam can hit some of those Matthew notes too, but really, it wouldn’t be anything original. Selfish reasons, I just don’t want anyone doing Muse!

If this was so last minute the show is looking more incompetent all the time. Why not just let the kids sing and cut the judges? Then the audience could decide for themselves. It is supposed to be a singing competition after all.

Yea I saw that, but from what I have seen, the official website sucks and is wrong quite a bit. I know it took them a long time to update the front page and at one point they had like top 36 when it was down to top 10 or something, so that may have been wrong and I wouldn’t be surprised.

What does Keith Olberman have to do with the Idol contestants?

Melinda’s “Funny Valentine” was the best performance of any contestant that whole lame season. IMO the song is now untouchable for any new aspiring Idol, so good luck Matt, you’ll need it. If he over-riffs it to death, as he is wont to do, he’ll kill the song’s sweet poignancy. Ditto Moody’s Mood for Love after Elliott, which was his personal best and the best of his season. Matt is due for first up to bat since he was second-to-last last week, and Schlocky is due to sing us out with a bang, no doubt!

There’s a huge difference between confirming if an account is real and asking Twitter to remove an acknowledged fake account. The law falls firmly on the side of parody when it comes to using a celebrity’s name on a fake account. On the other hand, Twitter will always confirm whether or not an account is fake. Two different issues.

The judges have been great about not comparing contestants with past contestants who have done the same song. That’s very true. And with all the people who do DLTSGDOM, you’d think someone would eventually get compared. However, I don’t think Matt can do it as well as Melinda (and I think Melinda is overrated), so he may get compared because of that.

Adam dodged a bullet on PTFM in regards to being compared to Taylor Hicks. It seemed like Simon wanted to go there when he told Adam that Adam was very brave for doing that song. But it seemed to me that Simon cut himself off and decided to let it drop.

I am not as pissed as others by the performance order, Adam got his first one with MadWorld, a lot of people were complaining but after he performed everybody knew why he got it.

Doesn’t seem like performance order is meaning much this season, if Anoop’s evah-so-lucky bounce from his pimp spot last week is anything to go by. What it tells me is that Danny should have had it this week but he’s not sounding so hot, so they gave it to the guy who can close the show out on an upswing. Kris opening the show is also a position of strength–it’s the theory of primacy and recency. Its the ones in the middle who have to worry about being forgotten.

You might want to check out the Pussycat Dolls version of Feelin’ Good. One of the members of that group started the Zodiac Show that features Adam Lambert. There’s a connection there and the Pussycat Dolls version would be killer for Adam — a vocal gymnastics routine set to a slinky, bluesy arrangement.

I think they probably gave Adam the pimp spot to make up for the fact that many people did not get to see him last time he had the spot. Also, it probably has to do with ratings. They know everyone will watch till the bitter end to see Adam. People are tuning into the show just to see what all the fuss is about him.

I know quite a few in that category who cared big time when they went to watch their TIVOs of the night Lambert sang MW. They’d heard a lot of buzz about it, were all excited to see it, and BAM! Not a single minute of Adam’s performance was to be seen. A lot of people were hoping TPTB would make it up to Adam, and to the viewers, by replaying his MW performance. But, true to form, TPTB never even acknowledged their eff up.

It’s just my experience that those on the internet seem more caught up in who goes last. Any casual viewer of the show that I know who isn’t on the internet, doesn’t seem to notice where someone performs. They just notice the performance. That’s all I meant by that.

Jamie Foxx is also a VERY successful recording artist. I’m sure he has lots of great insight for the contestants – even if he isn’t associated with the rat pack.

In defense of Jamie Foxx as mentor, his albums have done quite well, so by that measure he should be taken seriously as a musician. Not that that means they’re any good. I wouldn’t know – haven’t listened to them. :-P

I hope Adam doesn’t sing the Muse version. Thanks to Twilight, Museis pretty well known with teens which is (or at least should be) the core demographic he’s aiming for. And from what I’ve seen, a lot of his teen fans are also Twilighters, which probably means they would recognize the Muse version.

the arrangement of songs probably has “something” to do with the performance order. im guessing adam is at the end bc his muse version is the only heavy, rock song of the night? a bit anti-climatic to put it in the beginning or middle (IMO). and yes, at the same time, its definitely another chance to pimp him and save next week for danny.

I’m loving the song choices tonight. I’m especially stoked that there might be that “shocking” Danny boot. That is not a good choice. I can dream, right?

After years of watching this show I just don’t think performance order is really going to amount to much at this point.

Matt and Allison are in the most danger because of weak performances and difficulty finding a demographic, in that order. No matter where they perform they will still be in danger.

Danny is in danger because he’s shown no growth, and next to everyone else looks like a karaoke singer. No matter where he performs this will still be his biggest issue.

Kris and Adam are in no danger because they are consistent and have shown tons of talent and drive.

Can someone say other stuff about Kris’s performance? Was it low or high energy?

Most teens only know Supermassive Black Hole courtesy of Twilight. My 14 year old daughter who has been a Muse fan for 5 years is most digusted. And that version was on their 2001 album which was not even released stateside until 2005. I’d venture a guess that college students stand a better chance of recognizing the Muse version than teens.

I think we are gonna have a good show with all of them doing well. It’s going to be interesting.

Jamie’s 2005 album release of “Unpredictable” went 2x platinum. His last album “Intuition” (2008) sold over 700,000.

My guess is they will give Adam the first spot once they start performing two songs. They don’t want viewers to drop off early if he goes first. They will probably give Danny the pimp stop next week, since it’s apparent they want him in the finals. I don’t really think he is in danger this week (sadly), but in the upcoming weeks he may be more at risk.

It shouldn’t be taken out on the contestant. The order in which he or she performs is not up to them. Also, if his performance is worthy of the last spot (like Mad World was), than there is good enough reasoning about it. After all, we are watching a show to be entertained. Who wants to see a lame performance at the end of a show?

LOL Ok, read a few, enough to sense angst over the final performer. Here’s my read, consistent with my take on the timing. After his last performance didn’t actually make the show (time allotted) this was the only week they could ensure he wouldn’t get cut off again. I mean, if they can’t get 5 songs in an hour, they should just quit.

I had Muse’s first album Showbiz when it came out in 99. A friend of the band shared with me back then. But I didn’t know about their Feelin Good cover. It’s still cool. And perfect for Adam. I’ve been saying all along that Adam needs to do a Muse style song.
Anyway, curious about tonight with all of them. Not sure about Matt’s choice. Doolittle did that song well. And the keys are hard to keep up with in that one.
Danny’s song seems better suited to Matt, but whateva.

I’m getting excited with the show just minutes away and it looks like Kris may be first. I hope he does his usual fantastic job and makes it through another round. I would love to see Kris make it to the finals, but every week he is still on the show is one more week I get to see and hear him. I like his song choice for tonight. All of the contestants are brave to live up to the pressure that is Idol at this stage. I wish them all luck.

In defense of Jamie Foxx as mentor, his albums have done quite well, so by that measure he should be taken seriously as a musician. Not that that means theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re any good. I wouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know – havenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t listened to them. :-P

Well, Miley Cyrus has sold tons of albums, and I don’t take her seriously as an artist. Katy Perry, Britney (and don’t get me wrong, I love her!), Madonna… None of them would make good mentors, except possibly Brit and Madonna from a performance/in-the-business aspect.

Ok, this ^^^^^^^ exactly, they gotta know that and that is a big reason they have him last, Kris is awesome wonderful, in his own right, but none really come close to Adam as far as wow, presence, etc.

If Foxx likes what Anoop’s got then he could always get in touch with him. There’s no rule says that they can’t meet up and talk/write/collaborate.

**Sigh** I feel the same way about Anoop and his possible interaction and response to Jamie. Plus I think that he would have looked really good in a suit tonight. I too am still in mouring over him.

I also think that Adam will probably do well tonight. And I think that everyone is dressed nicely tonight. I really like Allison’s dress, and Adam’s suit.

I think that Jamie is going to end up being a good mentor to the contestants and that he is going to be very encouraging to them. He was pretty encouraging to Kris so far.

Still, on principle, ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s wrong and unfairà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦and I too say that as an Adam fan.

On what principle?

THe reason the “pimp spot” was identified on the knoll in the first place is because it’s a show biz tradition to close out a show with your show stopper, leave the audience with a big final impression. People started noticing that the (arguably) strongest performance of the night was usually saved for last for that reason. Traditionally, the pimp spot becomes knollish when it is given to a judge’s favorite with a weaker performance, to prop them up and make the performance seem showstopper worthy when it’s not. That’s why is ridiculous, IMO, to start bitching about who has the pimp spot before the performances actually air.

The only other time Adam went last since the semis was Mad World, which is widely considered to be the big moment of the season. So, I’d say he earned the right to close out the show, even if a lot of people didn’t see it. Maybe he earned it again.

I’m sorry but I have no respect for Jamie after his remarks he made about Miley and Britney. I thought he had more class then that

That was an incredibly moving performance by Kris. And Simon is full of crap. What does sounding wet mean? There must a method to his madness…..riling up Kris’ fans to vote even more.

Lets see kris gets show saying they are all dead.The bus came out and simon pushed him.Then they show a picture of danny with the itune free pic.I think they booked who they want for the finale and are getting scared.

I love me some Kris, but that was no goodie. I agree with Simon. It was really dull and the vocal one of his weakest.

1. Sometimes my memory fails me – what was Paula’s big no-no during Top 5 week last year?
2. I’m pretty indifferent about mentors in general (most of the time they seem to just give empty platitudes “[to contestants] Good job… [post-mentoring comment] Oh I think he/she will do really well with this!”), though I DO think they could have found a more appropriate mentor than Foxx.
3. Canadian Idol has had 4 judges from day 1, and as far as I can recall, have *never* had a problem staying within their allotted time frame. I’m not positive, but I don’t think they’ve ever done 90 minutes for Top 5 [if any other Canadians out there have better recollection, feel free to correct me]. Don’t get me wrong, they do their share of gushing, but overall they’re much more succinct (and they all speak *English* rather than MumblingBumblingStutteringMartian). Maybe it’s because two of them are a bit Simon-ish and *none* of them are Paula-ish.
4. I don’t know if Buble was drunk (was it last year, or the year before) – but he certainly messed up during his performance! I felt a little disloyal, seeing as how he’s my homeboy (lol) and all (saw him once in an “Upright Cabaret”-type setting a loooong time ago before he got “big”), but I laughed so hard when he flubbed his lyrics!
5. If they’re only singing 1 song each tonight (GGggggrrrrrrrrr!!!!), it had BETTER be longer than 90 seconds, that’s all I can say! I’ve been looking forward to 2 songs per night for weeks. This is when we really get a sense of how well the contestants can handle the pressure (2 songs group choreo whatever interviews, etc. x 1 week = very tight schedule!). It’s not often that a contestant can pull off two great praise-worthy performances in one night.
6. I have class tonight @ 6pm, not home until nearly 10(PST) – ARGGHH. It’s gonna be yet another super-late night, because I won’t be able to wait until tomorrow to watch and/or check the boards & blogs for comments. Le Sigh. LOL

Paula judged Jason Castro’s second song before he sang it last year.

Allison sang well as always, but this song is about a poor little lamb who has lost her way. Allison belted it out as always. It was sung well, but not in the tender style of the song. She doesn’t interpret the lyrics well. She just belts every song. That is what makes Adam so impressive. He interprets the music well. kris, too, interprets the heart of the song well. He also manages to stay true to the genre. Tonight was no exception.
