I’m okay if there’s no Britney, she’s a good entertainer but can’t sing. I’d rather have Christina to duet with Adam.

Falling Slowly was my absolute favorite recording this season but I’m kind of glad he’s not doing it again. The low notes in the verse are a little tricky for a live performance. Since Heartless is too recent, glad that one is out too.

My bet: Kiss gets a short solo spot (they have 2 hours to fill). Adam is with a legit band and he does a duet with another famous frontman. They haven’t leaked this one, and I think they will try to keep it a secret until after the final. If Adam wins, great for more buzz and ratings. If Kris wins, it will give Adam fans a reason to watch the finale. As always, a win-win for TPTB.

Guitar, yes. Piano, no. I think that Kris seemed distracted by trying to play piano and sing at the same time. The judges don’t seem to think much of his piano playing too. ‘Sides Scott and Matt are more comfortable with piano, and the difference is observable.

I’m glad Kris probably isn’t doing “Heartless” or even “Falling Slowly”. I think “Ain’t No Sunshine” is his best bet…it was the first time people really considered him a threat (I think), it was awhile ago, one of his best vocals/interpretations, and he’d be playing an instrument.

The acoustic was good and better than his idol performance but still this is the Finale not some regular get by week. He needs to pull out Ain’t no sunshine

I’m by no means a teeny bopper (can’t hardly remember that far back), but I’ll be voting for Kris. I think it’s way too simplistic to say that either one has an entire demographic group voting for them. I’m Christian, but I attend an open and affirming church. I was licensed in Massachusetts to perform at my sister’s wedding to her partner of 15 years. I’m 52 years old and voted for Obama. I live in the midwest. I don’t know that I fit comfortably into any demographic…

That said, I’m voting for Kris because I like what he’s done overall more than I like what Adam has done. It’s really that simple. Neither were my first choice…that would be Alexis this year. I knew, however, from the start that she didn’t have a chance (especially when Simon called her Jolene sound alike–that was all sorts of WTF to me).

I think both dudes are awesome people, so ultimately I’m really unconcerned who wins. Good luck Kris and Adam.

The “cross section of America” won last year with David Cook. Archie easily had the teeny bopper votes, and didn’t win. I hope it will be the same this year.

I have no idea who the Sweet are. They seem like they would fit with Adam’s glam rock side, but would America know who they are? Are they current “here”? I have no idea.

I still think the groups that would be too sweet, too perfect for Adam would either be Led Zeppelin or Queen. And both would be instantly recognizable on the US American Idol stage.

That’s not true for “Ain’t No Sunshine,” which I really hope he’ll do instead of “Falling Slowly.” The latter was a great, creative, bold choice in competition. But now Kris needs to really show off EVERYTHING he’s got, including his instrumental and arranging abilities. “Falling Slowly” is a very sweet, soulful number for him, but there’s no way to really rearrange that song or make it entirely your own.

IÂ ¨’m going to be a soggy mess ( along with DC and millions of others) when I hear DC sing Permanent….I love that song…it is really beautiful.

Hi, I am uk music fan -an old one at that -definitely not the old Sweet from UK – 2 of those are dead now -the dross-like remants of their line -up (who all look like your grandad after a late night out with hookers) are now the type of band who play old bingo halls for  £50 (about $100) dollars a night all in. They couldn’t get arrested, let alone booked for a gig IMHO.

I don’t think that “sweet band” refers to the old 70′s band Sweet. I’m even surprised anyone remembers them. Two band members are dead: Connolly in 1997 and Tucker in 2002. One of the two “Sweet” bands still in existence is Steve Priest’s version but they had trouble filling the Whiskey A Go Go last year. (There may be more “Sweet” band spinoffs, not anything I bother to keep track of.)

And even though I know The Sweet had more success in the UK, and a minor US hit, all I really remember was a non-so great remake of Stairway to Heaven they put out in the late 70′s. It was a total joke to Led Zep. fans, like me, since it was lame and The Sweet started out as a bubble gum group. Here’s the best and hardest rock song, “Action”, their only US hit:

Stairway to Heaven won’t have to be condensed to an 1.5 – 2 minute song. If he performs it as part of the celeb duet, he will sing the complete song. I don’t think they condense the celeb songs.

When I first read that tweet about a “sweet” and “perfect” band for Adam to sing with, I thought of Placebo, the British band (placebo also being a “sugar” pill).

And frankly if I never EVER have to hear anybody sing Stairway again I will be thrilled to death. One of the most overplayed and overhyped songs in existence IMO.

I’m a guy and definitely not a teeny bopper. I will be voting for Kris. The perception is very wrong. Nigel definitely is wrong. In fact if you actually are in the Kris forums, his fans actually come from all ages and there are more males than what the media is saying.

By this stage, I think it is fair to say that both Kris & Adam have support from legions of fans from all walks of life. All these perceptions are not true, and both Kris & Adam deserve to be in the finale. I am rooting for Kris, but would be happy for both of them whatever the outcome.

There is a group called the Candy Coated Killahz who are groovy -hip hop/electronica/club music..

but they are Canadian and not well known even here, though they have just starting charting some singles on mainstream radio

lavender1960 – great point. Steve Tyler has done duets before, and if the choice for Adam was Steve Tyler and Aerosmith — I would certainly describe that as “sweet” — or flat out amazing. Plus, makes more sense than Bowie.
Aerosmith is promoting their upcoming tour that starts in June. Ummmm, make me think this is a great guess.

And, regarding Keith Urban, he is an international star and one of the few country artists that has been able to cross-over to AC stations with any success. And he’s a great guitarist. I think that this will be a really good duet for Kris.

As for Jason Mraz, I put him with Matt. Once Matt got off Idol and away from the judges, he actually was quite good and he does have a similar style to Mraz. But Jason Mraz has a much better voice and more advanced style. If this happens, it probably won’t be a big moment. Just MHO.

Keith Urban plays a mean guitar. he’s one of the best I ever heard. he’s also very cool. His voice transcends country, its smooth and chamaleon like.

A duet with David Bowie would suck. While he is an icon, an incredible performer, he is actually very weak, vocally. Almost no vocal range..very thin tone. I can’t imagine a duet with Adam.

Does anyone know if Adam and Kris will sing the song from different categories in the same order? (i.e. both sing simon’s pick in the first round, reprises in the second round, etc). I recall in Season 4 Carrie sang Inside your Heaven first and her strong performance of Angels Brought me Here last, while Bo sung his songs in a different order. It could have an impact on how well they do tonight.

“Mad world with a twist”. I think if this is what he does, he needs to change it up, othrewise it will be unfavorablely compared to his last MW performance. But what kind of a twist? I have only come up with two ideas:

1. Strip it down even further: A capella or with a solo guitarist Real risky in the Kodak which can have a lot of audience noise, but when has Adam seemed to miss a chance to a risk.

2. An electronica version of the original Tears for Fears version. He is opening the show and this is one way to make it more energic. But I can’t see that this would be an improvement.

To kill a bit of time, I listened to a lot of MW covers, and there’s really two version the original and the Gary Jules. Most of the covers are the GJ version but none of them are in Adam’s league. So I actually hope the change up is pretty minor.

Hey here’s a thought. What if Jason Mraz did a duet with Adam. That would be quite a twist wouldn’t it. No one has said who he is dueting with. What a way of showing Adam’s current sound. Well a girl can dream huh?

SO SO SO happy to hear that Kris is doing Aint No Sunshine. I loved his take on it and I think that was when a lot of people started taking notice. I don’t, however, think it was “the moment” that Heartless or even Adam’s Mad World was. Which is good, because attempts to recreate “moments” in previous seasons just haven’t done it for me… they almost always (always?) pale in comparison to the first time they were done.

Sorry Patty H. To clarify more, I love listening to the contestants perform so agree with you there. As a matter of fact, I want more of them. I just meant I could do without the additional ‘acts’ – Steve Martin and anyone else trying to promote themselves via Idol. I could also do without the repeat antics of former auditioners (ie Tatiana and other God-awful wannabes whose 15 minutes were up long ago).

Re: Cathy Dennis…she had a couple of pop/dance hits in 1991, “Just Another Dream” and “Touch Me (All Night Long).” She also has a writing credit on David Cook’s “Heroes” along with Cook and Raine Maida.

Yeah, I think it was a done deal that Kris was going to sing “Ain’t No Sunshine” and Adam would do “Mad World”. Both tried them out during home visit videos, and were figuring out a new variation of their biggest hits of the year.

And in most cities, people are lucky if they can find a single radio station on the dial that plays Mraz, Johnson, Ben Harper, Brett Dennen, James Morrison, et al., while there’s plenty of stations playing glam/metal rock oldies.

Maybe Adam will do something new with the latter genre, fine and dandy. But it’s absurd to pigeonhole Kris like this, or to negate the fact than he’d be quite different than any other Idol as would Adam.

very good point colette. It is easy to try to fit people into musical niches such as Kris with Mraz or Cullum. I do think he is stronger vocally. I think Kris’s pre-idol songs are just brilliant. He has wonderful phrasing and knows how to build a song.

I was so glad Cook sang a new song, but not sure how it translated into sales. You would think new would sell better as people already bought the old one, but I think the risk is much higher that it is not a homerun and therefore doesn’t sell as well especially considering there are so many new listeners for the finale.

It translated extremely well actually. TWIK sold 79,907 copies in the 4 sales days it was available after the finale, charting at #28 on the Hot 100 with zero airplay. It was his fourth best-selling song of the 17 available for sale, after Time of My Life, Dream Big, and I Still Haven’t Found…

It’s impossible to know whether a reprise would have generated incremental sales to equal that 80K total, but I tend to doubt it. With all the fans out there who want to have a complete catalog for their favorite, I think doing a new song probably benefits the overall sales numbers.

ETA: Which does beg the question of why TPTB would insist upon a reprise. And to that, even from my prime real estate on the knoll, I have no good answer.

Mraz is vocally amazing. Have also heard him live. Kris had a Mraz vibe going in Heartless but other than that I think he is quite different. Same genre, much different sound.

Here’s how I feel her critique will go

Adam: You rocked it, that is just how I wanted it to be sung!!!
Kris: I really like you but, it just didn’t work for me, that’s not how I visioned it being sung.

Does Adam play any instruments? I haven’t seen that side of him on the show anyway. I think Kris deserves bonus points for that. Piano and Guitar.

As for vocals, I think Kris will fare better than Adam by comparison with their supposed “peer” vocalists both this week and career-wise.

I don’t know about that, I live in Tupelo, Mississippi population 35,000 — yes it’s the “big” city in NE Mississippi. and even we have 4 stations plus 1 college station loaded with Mraz, Johnson, Ben Harper, Brett Dennen, James Morrison, et al. I like this but I can’t take it as a steady music diet.

We also have 8 Country stations, 10 Gospel/Christian stations, 7 classic rock/oldies and low-power 1 Urban Contemporary station. What we don’t have is anyone playing alternative music or a good urban contemp. station. And, in the past 3 years I have never heard anything that sounds like glam/metal rock on broadcast radio here.

Quite simply, I live in a radio wasteland — and I get tons of Mraz, etc. here.

That’s why I subscribe to Sirus/XM satelite radio.

Oh, for crying out loud. Does anyone actually believe this crap? I could actually see Adam wearing that kind of get-up in his Zodiac Show days, but not on American Idol. The only way that this would happen is if Adam’s actively trying to lose (or make VFTW collectively explode with a rush of orgasmic glee), and I don’t see him as immature enough to do this.

I kinda agree, the TPTB really ruin everything, and it’s not Adam’s fault. I’m not a fan of his not because of the TPTB, but because of his style, which doesn’t suit me. To be honest, I’ve seen more musical acts similar to Adam than I have seen of Kris. Adam doesn’t need that much pimping, either. He’s good, just not my type.

The two are good at what they do, but sometimes it feels as though they think Adam is flawless and that Kris is just a pile of donkey doo with an occasional pooped out piece of silver. Most notably with Simon, who pimped Adam and Danny endlessly.

Has TPTB announced any kind of sales cut-off for the S8 iTunes downloads yet? Last season Ryan announced the week before the finale that all the contestant’s tracks from throughout the season would only be available for purchase until midnight Wednesday after the final performance show. That announcement surely prompted a lot of last-minute sales and juiced those numbers, although it also resulted in a truncated sales week.

If they haven’t announced a cut-off yet I’m assuming they’re going to give them at least the full sales week, which will definitely allow for higher weekly totals and help them chart even more contestant’s songs than they did last season. If this is true, don’t know how I feel about it. “Love Soon” isn’t a radio hit, the judges probably won’t recognize it so even if Kris did change it up people wouldn’t know it unless they were Mayer fans. It’s not Happy Feet because I think it’s a great song, but it’s not exactly the best choice–not a huge surprise.

This could be a total rumour, but if it is true and Adam is doing the same song he auditioned with, there are actually two songs he auditioned with. One is Bo Rhapsody (which was televised). The other is a song by Michael Jackson, I am pretty sure it’s “Rock with you.”

If this was a musical instrument playing contest than Matt (IMO an excellant pianist who plays a lot of other instruments) should be in the final with Scott (quite good) — how about duet with Matt and Scott and 2 pianos for the finale? I don’t think that Kelly, Clay or Carrie — the 3 most successful Idols, played instruments either. And IMHO Kris’ guitar work is not in Daughtry’s league.

Adam can read music and has composed music, so I assume he is able to play some instruments. I’m sure some truly obsessed Adam fan know and provide the answer. But he certainly can dance. So, let’s add in a dance contest to Idol, too.

I’m not sure how they stack up to their “peer’ vocalists but both have a lot of talent. IMO Kris has a fine voice, connects with the audience and will sell records, but he will never be famous as a vocalist. I see him being more like Johnson than Mraz.

Adam will be know for his spectacular pipes and his singular stage presence. Plus he is interesting – he know how to set the stage and present new versions of himself that suit each song.

I don’t know who is Adam’s peer — I’m not claiming he’s peerless — but who do you consider his peer? The male vocalist he really reminds me of is the great Freddie Mercury — and it’s unfair to hold anyone up to that standard. But the comparison is obvious: both have the extensive vocal range with the ability to hit an F5 with seaming ease, they both have power across the full spectrum of the vocal range they use, and amazing vocal control. Adam’s already done justice to Robert Plant and Steven Tyler vocals, so I think that he can hold up to almost anyone.

Second, since when has the TV Machine given the time of day to acoustic-jazzy-folky troubadors of this era? Other than a scattered late-night talk show appearance here or there? And in most cities, people are lucky if they can find a single radio station on the dial that plays Mraz, Johnson, Ben Harper, Brett Dennen, James Morrison, et al., while thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s plenty of stations playing glam/metal rock oldies.

Maybe Adam will do something new with the latter genre, fine and dandy. But ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s absurd to pigeonhole Kris like this, or to negate the fact than heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d be quite different than any other Idol as would Adam.

I’m taking the bait too. I subscribe to Sirius so that I can hear the acoustic-folksy-troubador singers. Some of those guys don’t fit in a neatly into a pigeonhole either. I can already hear Kris in my playlist already right along with them.

Adam is just… ADAM, with the incredible range and great performance skills.

Comparing Kris to Adam is like comparing apples and pears, in my opinion.

Both are talented male singers. That’s where the similarity ends, and I don’t think one is “better” than the other. They’re just different and it’s really a matter of taste.

I tend to prefer the kind of music Kris makes to the kind of music I think Adam will (probably) make, but I totally understand why some AI fans think Adam is the star.

I guess the songwriter competition didn’t work out so well, although I heard “magic rainbow” in the Stop & Shop yesterday and have to say, only David Cook could have made that song work. For all my annoyance at Kara, she’s written a lot of songs sung by Idols, almost as ubiquitous as Diane Warren. I suppose keeping it in the “family” is sort of inevitable at this point.

I adore Queen Latifah! I can’t wait to see her again.

That’s what I’m affraid of

Adam can read music and has composed music, so assume he is able to play some instruments. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m sure some truly obsessed Adam fan know and provide the answer. But he certainly can dance. So, letà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s add in a dance contest to Idol, too.

I am not a truly obsessed Adam fan but I read somewhere, where he stated that he doesn’t play any instruments. But that he was hoping that one of the other contestants would teach him how to play one.

I hope Kris does something amazing with the songs he is given.

As someone who has performed in several theatres, large and small (though I’m not saying I’ve performed in anything NEAR the size of the Nokia), the size of the theatre is pretty negligible for a performer. As long as they focus on the task at hand, it shouldn’t effect Kris and Adam at all. You could argue hearing might be an issue, but I noticed last week they were wearing earpieces, so that should be fixed.

Also, for what it’s worth, the Pantages Theatre, where “Wicked” was performed in LA, is larger than the Nokia Theatre, so the size REALLY wouldn’t affect Adam.

Doesn’t matter so much to me. The dude is an instrument.

According to the Nokia website, their seating capacity is 7100 with no seat further from the stage than 220 feet. For some reason I was thinking it was huge – like 20-30,000 capacity size.

I would think it would more affect Kris, since Kris is more used to playing clubs while Adam has played Broadway size shows. However, by this time I think both guys are fairly comfortable on the stage and should be ok either way.

Someone did bring up a valid point earlier though. If Adam is performing Mad World a capella (and no word on that just hopeful dreaming right now), it might be difficult to pull off. One of Adam’s many strengths so far has been his ability to get the audience to immediately watch him. When he has performed Mad World, or Tracks of my Tears, the entire audience was engrossed and did not move. An acapella performance will be more difficult for Adam to get that same type of response, but I think he has the vocal power to make it not only work but excel.

Oh dear sweet Jesus, I hope it’s true that Kris is reprising Ain’t No Sunshine! That is what I’ve been hoping for since he made the Final 2! It’s perfect. It was long enough ago that it won’t be too fresh in viewers’ minds and it was a breakout week for him in the competition where he really established himself going from cannon fodder to true contender.

As much as I am looking forward to tonight and tomorrow night, I am somewhat looking forward to the competition part being over, so these 2 extremely talented guys can get started with their careers. My perfect Final 2 would’ve been Kris and Allison, but I knew that there was no way Adam was leaving before Finale Week. That’s okay. I am confident we will be hearing more from young Allison in the near future. She’s a star.

As much as I respect Adam and his talent, I am definitely voting for Kris as are a lot of my friends that watch the show. I think it’s great that the Top 2 are so vastly different and it does not make one better than the other. Better is such a subjective term depending on what you like and prefer. And while this has no bearing on my preference for Kris, a Kris win would be a nice big proverbial middle finger to the judges and producers who’ve tried so vehemently more this season than any other, to shove their predetermined outcome down our throats week after week. Sweet justice I would call it. It would just be the cherry on top to the fact that I’ve loved Kris and his music since he was first shown performing in the Top 36.

I actually did feel that Cook was somewhat off on Finale night. I actually agreed with Simon that it seemed like DA gave it a huge knockout >_>. Heck, my sister who was a Cook fan thought Archuleta did better. I don’t think Simon’s comments really riled up DC fans to have that big a difference between the two (I thought DC fans were all just going to vote, anyway). Either that or very strongly hoping not, because it seems like David A. is Kris and David C. is Adam. Not musically, of course, but in fans.

I think this finale is more diverse than last year, though. Last year it was chill balladeer vs. chill rocker, this year it’s EXTREME rocker-actor vs. laid back singer-songwriter, yet both with a great sense of artistry at what they do. Which will make me less sad if Adam wins.

Archie did knock it out of the park during last year’s finale…no “making it seem as if” necessary. I like both so no bias here, but I really thought Archie was the better performer that final night.

On topic, I think Kris and Adam are neck and neck at this point and tonight will be the deciding factor amongst casual voters.

Not so sure about that either. I had no plans to vote in the finale last year since my favorite was gone but Simon’s comments changed my mind. Unfortunately that reverse psychology stuff does have an effect.

I think allowing instruments in the first place was a big enough “bonus”. A guitar or a piano gives a singer an automatic “something” to do with his hands, adds some “body armor” for comfort, and gives some audience members the impression one is a better singer because of it.

I’m dying here – waiting for spoilers and the real show tonight! The anxiety is killing me! Real spoilers vs. fake spoilers vs. maybe spoilers. SCREAM!!!!

I hope both of them do very well with all of their performances.

Nigel AND Simon Fuller both went on record saying they weren’t surprised he won because they saw the votes every week. All Simon’s comments did was widen the gap because he pissed off people enough to pick up the phone and vote. I genuinely believe Simon was mad because he didn’t think he made the right choice by not doing one of his big performances again, and Archie really did come out kicking ass.

Honestly, I have to agree. I thought Archie was the stronger performer on last year’s finale too. Except my favorite performance of the night was The World I Know.

Simon Cowell said in a recent interview that he would have never guessed that Cook would have won last year. He seriously thought Archie was going to win it all after his performances. But he also said, he didn’t care who ended up winning. I wonder if he cares this year.

I don’t want to re-hash last year any more than it already has, but I wouldn’t say Cook was ‘off’–I think he just cared more about putting on a mini-concert and not so much trying to win a show. I feel like these two men will do the same. Archie was doing what most other contestants have done: sing, and sing hard in an attempt to win a show. Kris and Adam are beyond that, they have a strong sense of themselves and it will show tonight.

I don’t think either Kris or Adam will have trouble with the size of the Kodak. But I think that the audience noise could be a problem for the broadcast audience. There are going to be a lot of excited fans there tonight and, if fans in the audience yells out “I love you …” or such in that place, it really travels. This happens sometimes even during the Academy Awards broadcast performances.

All I hope is that the performance are great and that AI gets the song mix right.

Oh sure, I believe everything I see on TV. Yeah, cuz that’s a logical point to make in response to what I said. Whatever. Last season is over, but if any conclusions are to be drawn from last season’s finale, here’s what I think:

Archuleta performed well. But so did Cook. Cook’s The World I Know is my favorite AI performance ever, yet Simon wanted a rehash of Billie Jean. Cook defended his decision and I’ve seen a lot of agreement with Cookie’s reasoning in the entertainment press and AI fandom. SHFWILF is up there for me too, and both were finale night performances, yet Simon was going on about knock outs. I thought Simon was full of crap, and rightfully apologized. Lots of people shared that POV. Point is, I would have voted for Cook after those performances no matter what Simon said, positive or negative, because I can make up my own mind. People also voted Kris into the finale over big time pimpee Danny even though Simon said Danny outsang Kris on top 3 night. I don’t think pimping OR reverse pyschology is going to have a huge massive effect anymore, positive or negative. It matters, but really not as much as it used to. America’s over it, and have been over it since last season, really. That’s my theory. I think in general, from talking about the show to random peeps, that the audience wants to see a finale free of OTT pimping and bus throwing and unfounded knock out declarations. You can only bring your wagon around to sell snakeoil for so long before the townspeople get wise, and IMO the audience has reached that point pretty much with AI.

Here’s my prediction: Tonight, if one person is obviously on their game and the other isn’t, then the person who performs the best will win. Or if they both do well, then the person who has the bigger fanbase and is more to America’s collective taste will take it. The judges commentary won’t sway people as much as it used to in the early days of AI, and I think they might even tone it down tonight and be kind of fair.

I agree with you sunchick. I vote based on my feelings on the performance. Not the judges, not anyone else. In fact I typically fast forward the judges simply because I find them a whole lot of noise. Eventually I do catch up and catch a few judge’s gems (studio 59 is still one of my favs), but otherwise I ignore the lot of them. I know many people listen to the judges, and some are even moved to vote based on the judges, but I like to think the voting population has their own minds and can vote however they see fit.

The only “one vote” online poll that I saw of Danny voters had 19% to Kris, 13% to Adam, the rest not voting or not watching. I don’t think that Kris fans should count on the Danny vote putting him over just because he’s the last Christian standing. (that for Paster Rolex).

I think that the voting will come down to who gets the uncommitted voters. The tween texters already have favorates. It’s the over 35 year old women who’ll make the final decision.

If you compare it to past years, it doesn’t appear the #3′s voters ever “go to someone”. And certainly no one listens to what the judges say. Sorry Simon the manipulator.

IMVHO the only chance David A. had to win last year was to take a risk. Instead he opened well but with a boring song “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me” that sounded like a plea, did a lack luster job on a lackluster song “In This Moment”, and closed with a reprise of “Imagine” that was not as good as last year. David C. certainly wasn’t at his best that night, and left the door open — but thankfully no one else walked thru it.

I was/am a David A. fan but I don’t believe he did what he needed to do to win AI. David C. did build up an impressive set of performances and really did deserve to win.

That’s how I felt too. His TWIK performance is my favorite performance of that entire season so I have a hard time buying into all that talk of him being off. I think the public (unlike the judges) can recognize that a song doesn’t have to be full of glory notes and vocal gymnastics to be moving. The fact that Kris is in the finals is evidence of that too. I also think that pimpage backfires most when people disagree with the judges…not when they think the judges are correct. If I thought a contestant was amazing and the judges said so too…why would that piss me off? Furthermore, if I recall correctly, both Fantasia and Carrie were pimped but they still emerged as winners. Unless the current set of idol viewers are more rebellious than the ones 4 years ago, I don’t think that much has changed.

I’m hoping the “spoiler” is wrong. I’m also starting to think not knowing what the song choice from Simon Fuller will make it that much more fun to watch. Can’t wait for tonight!

I’m such the fandork tonight. I really hope it doesn’t suck. I really hope both guys kill with their songs. I hope Steve Martin isn’t really planning to play the banjo. I hope Adam wins for a couple of reasons. First reason, I do believe Adam has earned it with more stand out performances. But having said that I think Kris is very talented and would be a worthy American Idol. The second reason I want Adam to win is because I think if Kris wins, his victory will always be tainted because many would believe he won because of the anti-Adam vote. (even if it is not true). I know Kris has many fans who just love him and believe religion and AI should be seperated. Pastor Rolex and Bill O’Reilly are ruining this for Kris and Kris fans just as much as they are trying to ruin it for Adam.

I’m still confused by the “poor Adam” sentiments…the guy has gotten more press/positive comments than anyone and stands up to the paps in the face of their “gay” comments, so why should we view him as weak? He’s obviously anything but that.

What I love about this final two the most(and would have loved if it was an Adam Allison final two as well) is the general appreciation they have for one another. The friendship that is clear and not misunderstood. They care for each other and want one another to do well. They are truly both winners.

I hate to say I don’t know if I would have felt that harmony if it had been Gokey anyone else in the finale. Whatever happens, I’m going to enjoy the ride tonight.

sunchick, I couldn’t agree with you more. I also think last year people voted on the last night based on the entire season not just the final performance night. I think we pick our favorites long before the final night. It really doesn’t matter so much to me what Kris does tonight, he is my favorite and I am going to vote for him. But FOR him, I hope he has a great night. If the judges are smart, especially Cowell, we will tone down the handing the competition to one singer or the other. He will give fair critique that highlights both artists strengths because otherwise he looks like an idiot and the win, no matter who wins it, will be tainted. It was wonderful last year because Cook won in spite of the judges best efforts to give the competition away. It felt like justice.

I plan on voting the entire time but can someone, anyone answer 2 questions I have:

1. What is the difference between regular voting and POWER voting? If there is something special you do to power vote please let me know and I will definitely be practicing it on Tuesday.

2. Is the west coast able to vote during the east coast time and vice versa? I know that on the finale we will be overlapping one hour but I’m wondering if its possible to vote the entire time. I don’t think my phone battery will handle it but this question has been raised among friends. Some say no that they are able to block certain areas while others say yes because its the same line and its open to all.

If anyone can shed light on these 2 questions I would appreciate it.

Above all, I hope Adam and Kris both perform well so neither contestant nor their fan bases has regrets. If they do, the results might be close and either could win.

I am putting all the political and religious distractions aside as I don’t think they ever make a difference in the finale. If we were that easily manipulated, all of us AI obsessives would own Fords and exclusively drink Coke.

If Adam and Kris perform “equitably,” the two voting blocs I think can swing the results for Adam are 1) casual voters and 2) baby boomers. Many casual voters wait until the finale to vote — thus, we cannot predict reliably how they will vote. But we can guess based on the history of finale voting.

Adam has advantages held by previous winners. He is the judges’ favorite — his talent is the object of a weekly bouquet of superlatives. He has more palpable charisma than Kris. He is already treated like a superstar. Taken together, he has irresistible momentum that could attract enough casual voters to clinch the victory.

All the SoCal baby boomers I know who follow AI adore Adam and consider him the next great rock star. The musical frame of reference he inherited from his father is a reflection of many baby boomers’ musical values. Aside from the Daughtry phenomenon, I have not personally witnessed so many men aged 40 to 65 openly talking about American Idol and specifically raving about Adam.

I also suspect Gokey’s popularity was so unique to his situation that many of his votes are not transferrable. If grudge votes could change an outcome, Diana DeGarmo would have beaten Fantasia. But the “overpimped” favorite won that season, too.

Adam definitely got the better song from Simon. What’s Going On was obviously picked for Danny and they were too lazy to change it. It would have suited him much more, but is still kind of repetitive.

Should be interesting though.

What does Patti LaBelle’s version sound like? If it’s in her typical R&B fashion, there’s a lot of riffs and I just don’t see Adam as a riffer like that (not that he couldn’t do it, just haven’t seen him to do it).

Well the message is current I suppose but I think they are incredibly dum choices but I know these boys can do something good to them, just was hoping my children, for once, would enjoy the show with something current and fun. The song choices and mentors always seem to be stuck in the past

Thanks Collette for your excellent posts. I’m also a fan of Kris and find him extremely talented. You explain it much better than I could. I don’t write musically and often feel intimidated here.

My tastes run the gamut and I don’t feel I should have to defend or debate the musicians, singers, and songs that I like.

I’m not a tween or a cougar – I don’t swoon or ‘squee’??? so my vote doesn’t count.

I don’t like Fuller’s picks. For Adam You should’ve picked something less ballad-ish, too. I don’t think you knew he’d choose Mad World, but somehow those two songs will mix very oddly for Adam. At least the Sam Cooke version has a chance to be more theatrical and less over the top, so I hope he goes with that. And for Kris, your choice is pretty weird. I can see Kris arranging this song, but I don’t know if I’m comfortable with it, either. Bleh. They’ll have to do some mad rearranging on these songs, but I think Adam will do something like “If I Can’t Have You” and insert his wail in an inappropriate place in the song and it’ll still be loved while I’m left with a rotten ringing in my ears. Adam, please, do not scream your glory note in this one like you did with If I Can’t Have You. You’ve proven you can hit a glory note without it being very OTT or screamy. Do it again, please?

I’m more excited about Mad World and Ain’t No Sunshine. Those are bound to be bigger hits (although if Adam’s idea of a twist is doing the Tears for Fears version I just might punch a wall again, but I really doubt that).

As for the coronation song…it’s a matter of style preference. Some will hate Adam’s version, some will be bored with Kris’s.

Adam’s theater background is going to be so helpful for him tonight in this huge theater with this huge crowd. I have my fingers crossed for Kris. I’m not fond of them both singing the same corontation song. I liked it better when they could chose a song that fit their style like the David’s last year. That seemed a bit fairer. Don’t mind the Marvin Gaye song for Kris. It is understated and Kris should do a great job with it. I hope he gets that little smile when he sings and really enjoys himself tonight. I love when he gets lost in the music and almost seems surprised to see all those people out there when he is done. I just love the kid. Hope he has a great, great night.

seriously, simon fuller and TPTB are complete tools…they keep talking about contestants being RELEVANT and CURRENT, yet they saddle them with 40yr old songs. granted these are classics but havent we already had mulitple theme nights? why not give adam a song suitable for the style of music he is going to perform outside of idol, same w. kris. the finale should be a moment for both guys, not another challenge (coronation song is bad enough….why this????). plus ive heard both of these songs 100 times during the last election period… at every fundraiser show, inaguration ball, etc. im not interested in another version.

Adam should be Adam and let the chips fall where they may. He’s got the restrained Mad World on the docket, so I have no problem with him going OTT with A Change Is Gonna Come. In fact, I prefer it. But then again, I like the Zodiac Club video a lot. It’s a passionate message. I hope he throws the mic at Danny and Michael at the end. Srsly, though, why the hell would he do two restrained songs when that boy can wail? And Kris can do his acoutic thing with What’s Going On and jazz it up a bit with Aint No Sunshine and show two different sides as well. Other than the coronation song, I actually think it sounds like a fabulous show.

IMO, the “sweet” reference is probably just an adjective to describe the pairing of whatever band it is and Adam, as in “Oh wow that was a sweet combination” – and has nothing whatsoever to do with the song or the name of the band. Aerosmith has already been done twice this season, and I doubt we’ll see G’n'R/Velvet Revolver or any combo thereof. I am praying to whatever gods & goddesses will listen that he is NOT paired with KISS. I like them (their early stuff, anyway), but the media would be all over that like a pack of rabid pitbulls and it would not be pretty (irregardless of voting already been over & done with).

I understand that the judges want this to seem like a real competition but Adam is so much better than Kris. I love Kris too but Adam is the real deal. No one will remember Kris in a few years…sorry

Kris was waaay too light on What’s Going On. Good, but needed to step it up IMO.

I love Adam’s version of “Mad World” and I liked this version even better than the first time. I thought the smoke and trench coat were over the top theatrical, I agreed with Simon, but that was mad entertaining.

Kris’s “Ain’t No Sunshine” was beautiful, elegant, no artiface – just pure, essential music. I loved it.

Adam’s “Change Is Gonna Come” was absolutely beautiful. I totally agree that it’s his best performance ever on the show. Where’d that soul come from? I don’t like the screechy top note, but I never will and really mostly it was beautiful.

Kris’s version of “What’s Going On” was guh – gorgeous. Understated, heartfelt. I like it subtle and soulful. It’s right in my strike zone, but it’s definitely not as “big” a performance as Adam’s and Simon probably has a point about that.

Adam’s voice singing “No Boundaries” is very reminiscent of Meatloaf. He sounds tight… I don’t think he’s into it. I guess I wouldn’t be either. It’s probably the song. Meh.

Kris – Singing “No Boundaries” – missed a word – he looks tight and not having fun with it either. I do prefer the the tone of his voice, but this song – meh.

Well, lol, I’m not clairvoyant but I’m digging Kris more than Adam right now.

Hate to even utter it…but I’d be willing to wager a good amount, that the “Kara” song was written with Gokey in mind. And even if it wasn’t…its a sucky song. What else has she written anyway? (Just so I can be assured she has done at least something decent.)

All in all…I feel a bit anti-climatic. Hope tomorrow lives up to the hype.

I give the night to Kris. I liked Kris’ first two performances. I thought Adam’s first performance was boring and the fog was ridiculous. I absolutely hated his version of A Change is Gonna Come. It was just an overwrought shrieky mess. And the coronation song was just crappy for the both of them. I think if the key had been lowered for Kris it would’ve been an all right performance. I couldn’t even understand what Adam was singing when he was performing it. Tonight proved to me that of the two I can only imagine Kris being a recording artist.

You have to remember that Patti Labelle is a 65 year old woman. I’d love to hear any other 65 year old woman singing like THAT! Anyway, Adam did his own thing, not a copy. Bravo.

Round 1:

Adam Lambert’s reprise of Mad World was exquisite. Beautiful, emotional, building and falling. Shading and light.

Kris Allen’s reprise of Sunshine was fantastic! Even better than the first time. Amazing vocal, amazing musicianship, perfect phrasing. Home Run!

Round 2:

Adam Lambert was handed one of the most iconic of all R&B ballads in the history the genre. Simon Fuller was spot on with this pick. And Adam delivered. I felt beforehand that he didn’t need to copy any other singer’s arrangement, and he didn’t! While he channeled a tad bit of Ms. Labelle’s chord modulations and stratospheric vocals, he really did his own bluesy thaang. A song for all ages. A performance for the ages.

Kris Allen was handed a real stinker of a song for an AI Finale performance. I agree with Randy and Simon. That’s too bad because he had absolutely slayed the first number and was on a roll. Marvin Gaye is an icon largely because of the circumstances surrounding his early-life death (murder). His songs, song-writing and vocals, to me, pale in comparison with the great Sam Cooke’s, and so there was nevah, evah gonna be a moment with a Marvin Gaye song. Pity.

Round 3:

A hot mess for BOTH; however, I agree with Randy that the Kara-penned number suited Kris better than it did Adam. And Adam was off-pitch for the FIRST time ever this year. Actually, I hated his performance, and merely disliked Kris’. The song pretty much sucked on many levels. And it’s a real beyotch to sing for sure.

Winner?

America decides! But Kris has my heart, my ear and my vote.

Rod Stewart is performing tomorrow night! I wonder with who?

Honestly Adam hands down won this night. i really think he proved that when he sang the same song Kris sang. There was no comparison. It amazes me that people did not see that. We are talking a different leaguedhere. kris is nice and will make an album, but he is no match for Adam. If Adam does not win the title then something is seriously wrong here. people vote for the talent. Don’t deny it. He deserves this. he is an American idol. Actually he is and will be one of the “Superstars’ of my lifetime. And i am so darn proud i got to watch him become a star..

Fair enough, as I have not listened to Kris’s pre-Idol songs yet. However, I have listened to hundreds of Mraz’s and seen him live in concert four times, based on which I say he’s got a very, very strong voice. ;)

Virgo, this is what makes both songs quite current. I hope the younger viewing audience is aware of this. I loved Fuller’s choices. Kris did a nice job, but Adam’s song was awesome. What a voice.

On our local news channel here in California one of the reporters was at the Nokia theater and she said there is a rumor there that Michael Jackson might show up at the finale.

Anyone else hear this rumor? She said it was circulating around……not sure if her so called sources are reliable.
