American Idol 13 Top 5 Song Spoilers (UPDATED) (STUDIO RECORDINGS)

American Idol 13 Top 5 song spoilers.  This week, fans chose the songs the Idols will sing! The contestants chose TWO songs from a list of fan-tweeted selections.

I don’t have a complete list yet, but here’s what I have so far.  Spoilers are from New Zealand iTunes.  There is nothing listed for Jessica yet. The contestants are only releasing one recorded song to iTunes, the rest of the spoilers won’t come until later in the afternoon.

Performance Order

Alex Preston – Sweater Weather by The Neighbourhoods
Caleb Johnson – I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing by Aerosmith – Download from iTunes –  (Thought we were going to dodge this bullet. Oh Well)

Group Number – Best Day of My Life by American Authors
Jessica Meuse – Human by Christina Perri
Sam Woolf – Sing by Ed Sheeran – (Uhm. This should be interesting)
Jena Irene – My Body by Young the Giant – Download from iTunes - OK. This is a pretty awesome song for Jena. I hope it translates as well on the Idol stage.

Group Number – Beast of Burden by the Rolling Stones
Alex Preston – Say Something by A Great Big World – Download from iTunes

Jena Irene – Valerie by Amy Winehouse
Sam Woolf – How to Save a Life by The Fray – Download from iTunes

Jessica Meuse – Summertime Sadness by Lana Del Rey – Download from iTunes - I’m not a fan of this song, but it’s a good match for Jessica’s voice!

Caleb Johnson – Still of the Night by Whitesnake

Best Day of My Life and Beast of Burden must be group numbers.

UPDATE: TV Line has the Updated Song List HERE. I

UPDATE: From the Idol insider!

Twelve songs means two group numbers–a duet and a trio perhaps?

Like Alex’s choice, but he’s so slow and boring sometimes, it would be nice to see something else from him. Maybe he could try sitting on a stool and not use an instrument? Caleb’s? Blech. Never heard of My Body, and Sam, well, it’s Sam so we’ll see.

  • Incipit

Caleb Johnson – I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing by Aerosmith – (Thought we were going to dodge this bullet. Oh Well)

Sheis. For what, the eight time? Why? Is everyone at Idol tone deaf to their audience? We do not like reruns – and this is a rerun in a Hall of Mirrors – how many different ways are contestants expected to interpret it? Is this “let’s mess w/Caleb” week?

If Caleb still has DC’s #, (and I wonder if they talked about situations like this happening – when the PTB hand them a bad song choice) he might call and get some commiseration…not much else anyone can do.

    SMH

  • TLKC

    And Jessica?

  • Amy Beth

I hate that Fray song. The lyrics are so darn insufferable.

  • tripp_ncwy

I guess Alex Preston is following in the footsteps of his good friends Alex & Sierra.

  • b_james

Oh look! Another slow boring song for Alex. Yay. I’ve been thinking for a while Sam’s voice would fit very well in a song by the Fray. I wonder if fans actually picked these or if the producers were “fans” in this case.

  • b_james

Yes! I want to see him without his guitar so he wouldn’t be tempted to be looking down at it the whole time. And at least on the stool he wouldn’t do his “gotta pee” walk.

  • Cary Gonzalez

    Oh good grief….

  • Trina

Oh good lord. Well as much as I hate the asteroid song (why am I not shocked Idol viewers voted for that damn song?) I think Caleb will sing the crap out of it. I can see him doing something along the lines of David Cook’s version which was pretty awesome (ironically I think David had this song handed to him too, I think by Simon?)

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

Okay, so if I’m hit by a bus on the way home from tonight’s corporate dinner, I have the compensation of knowing it was the End Times anyway, as the Meat Loaf Muffin is singing the asteroid song.

Very excited to hear what Jena Irene does with her song choice. I guess Preston’s mollifying the people who’ve been wailing for him to do that song all season… I’m actually kinda pleased with Teen Woolf’s choice. The Fray has a good chance of being his sweet spot on emoting effectively.

  • Tess Herself

At least, with him looking down, you aren’t distracted with his face and his blank and bland expressions. I just don’t get him, his music, or how the hell he has come this far.

  • Chris Osborn

I think Alex will sound great on the song. It fits his voice pretty well. Sam’s I’m just like really? I don’t think it does enough musically to boost him in the competition. Jena’s song fits her. Won’t have to change up much. I worry about her anunciation though. I feel she swallows her words up and I could see that happening. Caleb….no comment necessary.

  • Marko

    Hooray! The Asteroid Song.

  • Tess Herself

Steven Tyler must pay Idol to keep this song going……

  • justmefornow

    Beep, Beep..

  • b_james

I don’t have that much f a problem with him, but I wish the judges would call him out more on his lack of facial emotion like they do to Jessica. And I do believe CJ, Dexter, and Ben were worse. But I can think of several guys cut before top 13 that I wish could’ve gotten a chance.

  • Larc

Almost 8. According to What Not to Sing, it’s been performed 7 times including 5 in the finals by Josh Gracin, David Cook, Allison Iraheta, Aaron Kelly and Jessica Sanchez.

  • Marko

Now I’m praying for Against All Odds.

  • Chris Osborn

In breaking news instead of backing the bus over her tonight, they have just decided to cut her and tonight will be a non-elimination night….

  • Cary Gonzalez

    Or “I believe I can fly”….

  • Wui Zhuan Lim

    Alex,
when you sing slow ballads, people say: you are boring
when you sing uptempos, people say: you better stick to slow ones
    Alex,
    this is life,
    just move on,
    and prove them wrong.
    People, this is Idol 2014.
It’s not about moving around the stage anymore,
not who’s marketable only (THIS DEPENDS ON YOUR LABEL, NOT YOURSELF)
    not belting vocals only…
    not the looks only…
just vote, the highest vote getter is your American Idol, whether you like him/her or not…
Same thing happening since the last few seasons…

  • wordnerdarchie

Anything by The Fray would suit Sam. They write clean, inspirational songs and the range would be in his sweet spot.

Caleb singing the Asteroid song is no surprise to me.

It looks like Alex is trying to make sure we know what kind of music he hopes to do after Idol. It fits him like a glove, but won’t garner him new fans.

Jena has the best song pick of the night.

ETA: Hopefully on Caleb’s song they’ll let Allison have a more of an up front role in that song with him. There’s a mashup of David Cook’s & Allison’s studio performances of that song. Whoever did the mashup, did it well.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbmGB2-WutI

  • Chris Osborn

just do Alex. thats all he can do.

  • Chris Osborn

Simon picked Roberta Flack’s First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.

I hope they release the list the contestants had to choose from. I want to know what they didn’t choose

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

It was the producer pick for Cook. Cowell gave him that Roberta Flack song.

The dramatic irony here is that Cook’s live performance was only middling — he actually missed notes! — but it’s been driven out of collective memory by the really excellent studio version, bolstered by the generally positive memories surrounding S7. So what the MLM will most directly be compared to isn’t what Cook actually did live, but the glowing memories surrounding Cook’s singing the asteroid song.

  • Trina

    Ok now thats just cruel..

  • Tinawina

Oh no, that stupid asteroid song is back. What’s next? I’ll Be? I Have Nothing? Heard It Through the Grapevine? SHOOT ME NOW.

  • Marko

Only Bruce Willis can sing this song.

  • september21

Ok….I wanna know why that song is called the asteroid song? Please help.

  • Tinawina

It was for the movie Armageddon which was about a giant asteroid hitting earth. :)

  • akramwwhhoo

Who chose the song for caleb? Hope his other song is better

  • september21

oh thank you. I can rest now! hahaha Never watched the movie so had zero clue!

  • Guest

Jena great song cause my body tells me no but I won’t quit cause I want more cause I want more.

  • Amy Beth

They could just assign her “The Wheels On The Bus”.

  • Marko

The Best Movie of All Time

  • MichaelG

They always have to have someone perform this crappy Diane Warren power ballad on AI. Might as well be Caleb… #overdone

  • jcabby

Never heard Jena’s song choice, but I can’t wait to hear it.
Alex and Sam’s song choices fit their style. I think they’ll do well.
Caleb… well, if there is someone with the chops to do a Tyler song, it’s Caleb. Looking at the bright side :)

  • MichaelG

Idol must have paid a shit load of money to clear that song or to own the rights….so now they are trying to capitalise on their investment. Every effing season. Lol…

  • amadcow2

    - My Body for Jena is a good choice.
    – Say Something is totally boring and so suited for Alex that I see it as a fail.
    – How To Save Sam from the Swaybots is so boring, but combined with Alex’s snoozfest, I’m not sure who wins out.
    – Caleb singing the Asteroid song is like putting him on auto pilot.. he’ll do fine
    – Jessica ???

At any rate, I’m thinking that Jessica ‘should’ be okay if she did some pole dancing training with JLo over the week. The glaring pit of boredom comes from Alex and Sam.

  • Guest

Jena’s enunciation has gotten better as weeks and months passed by so I am fine with it. Besides she is a powerhouse singer and interact well with her colleagues. I think she has a great personality. IMO.

  • Marko

    I hope it’s Ke$ha’s “Blah blah blah”.

  • MichaelG

Or how about ‘Alone’? Or any song by Adele…

  • tripp_ncwy

I can see a total screamfest from Jena tonight. The judges won’t care about her missed notes & enunciation.

  • rightnow

Caleb chose this from a list fans had tweeted – so it wasn’t something put on him by TPTB. From a strategic standpoint, he will probably do fine with it and secure himself a position in the Top 4. The song was apparently good enough for DC.

  • justmefornow

How about this current little ditty? It only has 87 mil. views. A total classic in the making…

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdemFfbS5H0

  • ladymctech

Didn’t Antonella Barba (not sure if I got that name completely right) also do it in the semis in Season 6?

  • Marko

The Happy Feet song, recommended by Syesha Mercado.

  • Marko

    I can’t.

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

Naah, they’re saving that for the gals’ group number on tour.

  • Marko

    Lol. Epic.

  • MichaelG

Nah…she’ll do great. And she rarely misses notes.

  • justmefornow

lol. Don’t give them any ideas ;)

  • Trina

I wonder if this crop of judges has a clue that if they go TOO harsh on Jessica it can cause a lot of backlash and have the opposite results. I still think for all her talent that’s pretty much how Haley made Top 3, lots of votes to piss Randy off.

  • akramwwhhoo

LOL, you guys are the best at choosing

  • TLKC

Ha! Just don’t give anyone a chance to listen to the original of her song so that they can relate to it a bit before she performs her cover.

  • Marko

Yes she did and it was beautiful. Simon liked it a lot :)

  • Thanh Quang

Jena’s second song choice is Valerie By Amy.

  • TLKC

Yep. After weeks of who cares I just decided I want her to win.

  • bobo

You don’t think Sam chose another slow boring song but Alex did? :O

  • bobo

Good enough for me. Yeah, he’s not slide around the floor Caleb, but he’s got a beautiful voice, and he makes his covers interesting and new.

  • Larc

Yes. She sang it in Top 24 Girls. WNTS gives hers the lowest rating of all the performances (Josh Gracin’s is rated highest). Lindsey Cardinale also did it in the S4 semis. Interestingly, each of the 7 who sang IDWTMAT advanced to the next level. So if Caleb gets sent home for it, he’ll be the first.

  • Guest

    .

  • NancP

Just listened to My Body…wasn’t familiar with it, LOVE IT…but can’t hear Jena doing justice to that song

  • Marko

    I can :)

  • http://www.celebritybug.net Celebrity Bug

Really? Have you listened to her at all this season? Tripp is right on the money with his assessment.

  • Ronnie D

Ugh. That has to be one of the lamest Aerosmith songs ever lol. I don’t even think Caleb can make me like it. If I never hear that Say Something song again I would be happy, it’s so lame and overplayed.

  • Larc

With a lot of activity, there are things to steal attention away from the actual singing. Some singers need those diversions. Others, such as Alex, don’t.

  • kcostell

More precisely, he chose it from a list the producers chose from what fans tweeted. Who knows how awful the rest of the producers’ list was?

  • Vetle

My Body is super hard to sing, but I adore Jena for choosing it. Somewhat obscure, but I love it. She tweeted some of the lyrics yesterday, and I responded to her tweet – and she favorited my tweet! :D

Caleb’s song choice is so disappointing, but if anyone can do it justice, it is him I guess. Good thing there is two songs (right?).

  • Vetle

Fun fact: IDWMAT has been performed 7 times on idol (every time it has been performed it resulted in safety and no b3). After tonight, it will tie I Have Nothing with 8. (Against All Odds, Heard it Through the Grapevine and Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me have also been performed 7 times).

  • akramwwhhoo

and Jena or Jess will broke the record by singing “I have nothing”.

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

Or… with classic hard rock, it is normal to put on a spectacle and the song would seem wrong and amateurish if one didn’t… while with the kind of singer-songwriter song that Preston does, it’d be weird to put on a spectacle and seem whacked if he did.

Personally, I have no problem with either approach. The Meat Loaf Muffin hits his notes whilst cavorting about the stage, and his up-tempo songs call for a good cavort. Death of the Author Preston hits his notes whilst standing still and looking serious, because that is the kind of song he ordinarily sings. (It didn’t work as well with Neon Trees because Neon Trees does call for some minimal level of frolic.)

  • aaskork

Super excited for Jena’s “My Body”, she’ll rock it.

  • Larc

All 4 of these songs are on the S13 cleared list, so it’s not like Idol is venturing outside that for song choices this week. Something tells me suggestions for songs not already cleared got culled out.

  • Vetle

Or maybe Caleb will sing it just for lulz.

  • Sassycatz

Plus, we had to hear David Cook sing the song throughout the entire Season 7 summer tour and that’s when we had bigger, longer tours. He did a good job, but honestly!

  • Casey

Maybe it was part of Steven Tyler’s contract. In order for him to leave the show someone MUST sing that song every year! LOL

  • maymirabella

Sam, one of my least favorites , is singing one of my favorite songs. Ugh.
It happens every season…LOL..a favorite song of mine is sung by my least favorite contestant…oh well, at least Sam does sing on key even if he is like a sleeping pill..

  • Henrique Mendes

Young the Giants on idol? Yay! I love that album! Excited to hear Jena

  • Ken

“My Body” for Jena is the only inspired choice here…nervous for tonight

  • jga94

I just heard the snippet on iTunes Philippines–the song’s in Sam’s sweet spot–he sounds great in it…

  • jga94

The asteroid song is one of the cheesiest cheese of a song out there…hard to believe it came from Aerosmith…

  • Larc

I’d rather have my eyes offended by lack of a visual show than have my ears offended by off-pitch singing. That’s no contest for me. Ever. After all, I can always close my eyes.

  • zubin

Jessica tweeted some lyrics from Lana Del Rey’s Summertime Sadness last week. That’s my guess for one of her two songs for tonight.

  • Casey

why are there iTunes snippets for everyone but Jess? Something’s not right here. They better not screw hew on iTunes US later today!

  • Casey

Caleb’s recording is a bit of a snoozer for me, but I will say I did not hear that 70’s rocker sound in his voice. I hope he keeps it that way tonight! I LOVE Jena’s song, but I’m just not a big fan of her voice for some reason. I like her quieter voice, but once she starts belting I don’t like it. Sam sounds really smooth but brings nothing new to his song. Unfortunately, the same goes for my fave, Alex. Maybe he will surprise us by sitting at the piano tonight. I know he plays a ton of instruments, just not sure if that is one of them.

  • Kariann Hart

I’m afraid you’re right. It is the only way Idol will get their dream teen.

  • lkingcorn

I really have no idea how this show keeps doing nothing that might give it positive buzz, not just bad buzz. These song choices so far do not challenge the contestants in the least. It’s the same old, boring, see it every week performances. I really miss the good old days, can’t believe I’m saying this theme nights where the contestants had to step it up. Even the judging has becoming taped and brings nothin to the show. Somewhere along the way this train went off the tracks.

  • RyanBE91

Jessica is singing summertime sadness, its on itunes!

  • Casey

Sam’s song is already at #37 on Philippines iTunes. BEFORE Jessica’s song is even up! Do they know Sam will be in the bottom 2 tomorrow and is this their way of making sure he does not go home? Is this their way of making sure Jess is eliminated tonight. TPTB are EVIL!

  • Aaron Krandel

    where?

  • Guest
  • Ringo Pascual

Her voice sounds gorgeous on it. But it’s a little sleepy, as are all of the songs for the contestants that are listed.

  • Casey

Finally!!! I love the sound of Jessica’s voice!
I think everyone of these except Jena’s is pretty boring. Which is a bummer to me since she is one of my least favorites. But based on the iTunes recordings, you have to give this round to her. I hope the other tunes are better!

  • rychu

Jessica Meuse will sing Summertime Sadness

  • rychu

    Summertime sadness

  • Incipit

Exactly, kcostell – More precisely. This could be the best of the worst – and probably is – because we already know from one of the contestants that the producers “filter” the suggestions. And no matter how many suggestions they had (Or Not) – “the Producers” are picking the songs – it’s just a Stealth Producer’s Choice – consider it practice for the end of the season – when the contestants get less and less pretend autonomy.

    IMO.

  • Sassycatz

Some of these newer songs are a little too twee, a little too stylized. That’s why they don’t always go over so well on Idol.

Sam’s choice seems like a snoozer. Kind of goes nowhere, which won’t help him since he’s not Mr. Personality.

Alex’s song is pretty similar to everything else he’s done. Even though it fits him to a tee, he definitely won’t be stepping out of any box, creating a moment.

Caleb’s song is big time Idol cheese, but HE’S big time Idol cheese. He could possibly blow it out of the water. However, he’s not the only one who’s ever done that. So, nothing new there.

Jessica needs to emote those lyrics because the song will kind of lay there otherwise. Very stylized song.

Jena’s has potential. It’s a lively song and somewhat familiar. If she sings after Sam, Alex, and Jessica, she’ll wake the audience out of their little nap.

  • yclept

Love Jessica – despise this song. Shut it off every time it comes on the radio. Maybe she will make it listenable, but ugh. Just one of those songs that grates on my nerves..

  • NancP

I am not seeing the songs on itunes

  • Casey

look on iTunes Philippines. You have to go to the bottom of your screen and click on the round American Flag icon to change your country…

  • NancP

    Ok…thank you!

  • Ringo Pascual

It’s kinda funny that you say that about Jessica and her anticipated performance of Summertime Sadness. If you look at the video for the Lana Del Rey song, you’ll see that Lana really doesn’t emote much at all in the snippets she is shown singing. Too bad Lana never appeared on Idol because then the judges could explain why she is such a disappointment. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVjsGKrE6E8

  • NancP

Still not seeing them, even after I type it in search…oh well, I’ll just wait until tonight

  • Sassycatz

For some reason, I think she has appeared on Idol, but I couldn’t swear to it. But, I’ll be truthful here. I can’t stand her at all, so when you say she doesn’t emote the lyrics, I agree. She doesn’t emote anything as far as I’m concerned. I always thought she was somebody in the industry’s girlfriend and a total joke, but she’s certainly made some money off of that.

  • jpfan2

. Are many casual voters in the US affected by a song charting #37 on iTunes in the Philippines! I’ll make a wild guess and say no. ;0

  • Casey

That is because I just realized it is on iTunes New Zealand. WTF? I guess they are trying to make her song difficult to find. This is really wrong on so many levels. Is this normal?

  • zubin

lol. Lana found a way to make affectless delivery into a stylistic statement. Her whole image is build around displaying weariness in the face of decadence, disappointment, and decay. That being said, Jess is going to need to really play up the moves in and out of different parts of her voice and the rhythmic changes to make something out of the song . I like Lana as a choice of cover for her since they both have an element of darkness in their music. But I think I would have preferred Blue Jeans since that song has more emotional and vocal range and might have lent itself to a display of attitude since the lyrics are a narrative. But maybe the upper register stuff in that song isn’t a great fit for Jess’s voice.

  • jpfan2

Not familiar with Jena’s song. I like Summertime Sadness but it’s kind of a dirge like a lot of Lana’s songs. I like them but they’re not great Idol songs.
Caleb’s choice is really cheesy. I may have to rethink my opinion of him as the S13 winner. Sam’s choice is the usual snooze even though he’ll do a good job with it.

  • Marko

Lana performed Video Games in season 11, half-asleep.

  • Liteasy

I think Caleb has been cheese since the beginning – nothing new about him at all – pure karaoke IMO.

  • Casey

no, but iTunes sales count in the voting results.

  • Liteasy

I think they only count on The Voice.

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

What? No. That’s The Voice where iTunes sales can offer a vote bonus. Idol has never counted iTunes sales toward the vote and doesn’t do so now.

Even if they did, it’d be U.S. iTunes sales, not the Philippines.

  • wordnerdarchie

After putting their name in search (iTunes Phillipines) I had to also ‘select all’ because some were buried further over in the listing.

  • Ringo Pascual

The comment of Slezak (or was it Doolittle?) was spot on IMO: Caleb is more Rock of Ages than Rock and Roll. I have to think the cheesier the song, the less serious we take him, which is precisely the wheel house he occupies.

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

Idol studio versions go up on U.S. iTunes later in the day. That’s how it’s been all season. I think it’s something quirky to do with time zone settings.

The vast majority of viewers and voters will be in the U.S. and will never know or care what happens on Philippines or New Zealand iTunes. The only reason it’s discussed here is because we collectively are hot for song spoilers.

  • http://anibundel.com/ anibundel

    Meat Loaf Muffin.

    *DED*

  • Guest

    AI just tweeted this…

  • Incipit

Yes, I remember she did that, Marko – I was baffled then – I still am. Either that “somebody in the industry’s girlfriend’ or a doting Daddy Warbucks is close enough to an explanation – It takes money to get where she is with no recognizable talent at all.

    IMO.

  • Nostradamos

So I’m guessing “Human” by Christina Perri is Jess’ 2nd song? Sleepy at first, but appropriate….

  • hayes

10 performances, 12 songs. Can’t figure out which ones are the group numbers – 4 individual songs are bunched up at the end (assuming this is also the performance order). I also can’t imagine anyone singing ANOTHER Ed Sheeran song.

  • Guest

    Sam singing another Ed song?

  • Ringo Pascual

I can’t imagine Jena warbling through Valerie. And her trying to emulate Amy W.? Please God, No!

  • Caroline B

    Golly, I wonder who’ll sing Whitesnake. ;)

  • Guest

Meat Loaf Jr closes show singing ‘Still Of The Night” by Whitesnake.

  • Marko

    Caleb Coverdale ;)

  • Aaron

Slezak just tweeted the full list of song spoilers. For Caleb…I really want to see how they cut up his second song. It is one of my favorites, but at 1:30 it will be interesting to see if it will work.

  • Casey

    The Neighbourhood’s “Sweater Weather”
A Great Big World (feat. Christina Aguilera)’s “Say Something”

  • Kimmy Moores

Why on God’s green earth is Jess slapped with two pop songs, Human in particular?
    Why is Jena singing Valerie?
    What the hell?
    Jess is gone ya’ll.

  • Incipit

Bwahahaha! Geebus. And now I wanna hear him do it!

  • Kimmy Moores

    And God…the asteroid song… -___-

  • Caroline B

Yes. But wouldn’t it be entertaining if this was the week Sam Woolf went metal? (Paul Anka did, after all, heh.) ;) Or if Alex reinterpreted the song with his sweet vocal frills and kneading kitten feet?

  • yclept

“Human” (by one of my favorite artists) is an extremely tough song to do – but if Jess reaches for that super huge note and hits it, well – that could be something people will remember.

  • Casey

I think she has a great chance to have a moment with the chorus and long note on Human! I like the lyrics for her given busing she’s taken. “I can take so much, til I’ve only had enough, because I’m only human”

  • Trina

I was going to say its really not fair he gets to close the show AGAIN, but well this show isnt fair heh. At least he isnt closing with the asteroid song.

  • Incipit

“I wonder if fans actually picked these or if the producers were “fans” in this case.”

Exactly. The Producers chose these songs – no matter where they came from. This list is snoozy and way too ‘precious’ – and TPTB can try to blame that on the fans – but they still picked them from the available choices.

  • Kimmy Moores

I know, hence why I’m worried. I think she can hit the note…I just dunno how she’ll interpret it. That song is chock-full of emotion. Something Jess isn’t so good at in the face department.

  • Casey

That’s a relief! thanks for letting me know!

  • Ringo Pascual

I think the only saving grace for Jess is that she seems capable of putting an edge in softer pop songs. I loved her version of White Flag and then I listened to Dido’s original and was surprised at how little of an edge it had. But these are two bland songs viewed in a vacuum.

  • alt28023

I’m excited with these songs, minus IDWTMAT, Time to bring it contestants!

  • weareallinnocent

    ugh

  • Marko

Ed Sheeran is in it to win it!

  • Guest

Why are you guys so sure that Jess will sing Human?
    Maybe it’s jena’s song

  • dd999

Well, I’m disallusioned with this song pick…how depressing. This girl Lana Del Rey sounds much like Jessica will likely sound unless Jessica makes a lot of changes to the song. Yuck! Is this Lana Del Rey who Jessica wants to be??? One like her is enough?

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

    kneading kitten feet

*dies laughing* And I’ll keep thinking of it all day, too, and breaking out in inappropriate giggles!

  • zubin

Well, she’s either going to have a moment with Human, or she’s going home, so at least Jess is giving us a reason to be interested in how tonight’s show unfolds. Apart from her and Jena’s choices, the guys are all staying in their boxes tonight.

  • ptslittlecomment

Uh, “Love in an Elevator? “That Dude Looks Like a Lady?” The guys are experts at cheese making.

  • Kimmy Moores

    they checked the itunes

  • Kimmy Moores

Yeah the girls are interesting whereas the guys refuse to take any chances and show us something interesting/new. Tiresome.

  • Kariann Hart

I know I’m not up with the current music. There are only three songs I recognize. I hope it will be a good night for everyone

  • MichaelG

What is she supposed to do then–sing songs that are emotionally vapid? If she needs to connect more, or display emotion….then performing a song “chock-full of emotion” makes sense. LOL

  • tomr

I appreciate that most of these songs have not been done on Idol before. It makes a more interesting viewing for me that I don’t know 90% of them. Then I can’t compare them to the original and can enjoy them or not for what they are.

  • Marko

Lol. Comments about the song choices are more entertaining than the actual performances.

  • Aakash Mansukhani

These are REALLY interesting song choices…
Tbh I’m not a big fan of Ed Sheeran’s new song but I really want to see how Sam covers it

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

Y’know, I’d skimmed the fan suggestions on Twitter a while back (there was a hashtag, and yes, I WAS bored enough to get through 15 pages of that!)… the suggestions for the guys were mostly in their boxes, and the ones for the gals were more creative. Apparently the guys’ fans like their boys in boxes.

That said, yeah, I’m more intrigued by the gals’ songs. ETA: Though “Sing” is not exactly typical Ed Sheeran whiny folk music…

  • MichaelG

    Must be Sam.

  • Kariann Hart

Oh, “Sing” isn’t the la-la-la-la song by the Carpenters and by Big Bird. LOL. I know two songs.

  • MichaelG

What “assessment from tripp”? I just saw a brief criticism/comment. And I disagree with it. :)

And yes! I have, obviously, listened to her this season since I commented on her, above. Why ask such a silly question?

  • jt45

Valerie for Jena? Wtf? RANDOM. Hope she does something with it. I wanted something slow for her. Interesting choices for Jessica. Hope she does well too.

  • tomr

    LOL …I tie you!

  • MichaelG

Lol…I believe the term “screamfest” is reserved for those singers who needlessly screech and scream the lyrics gratuitously, even when a (continually repeated) glory note is not called for and is unnecessary…and pleasant. She’s far from that descriptor.

  • Call_girl

Jessica Meuse – Summertime Sadness by Lana Del Rey
Jessica Meuse – Human by Christina Perri

TIME TO STEP UP YOUR GAME GIRL!!! BEST SONGS FOR THIS WEEK!

  • weareallinnocent

If that’s the song order, it really seems to suck for Alex.

  • jt45

Now, good song(s) for Caleb I think.
Sing for Sam is weird… it’s a great song but I feel like only if you can hit those falsetto notes and I feel like he isn’t gonna do that…
The other song for him is good though. So his choices are actually halfway decent. He could possibly do real well with them.

I like Alex’s choices as well. Two good songs.

I kind of sense a surprise boot this week if Sam does well. Jess would even be a surprise if she does well.

  • jt45

But if Sam pulls through I’ll be disgusted knowing he makes top 4. He ain’t THAT good.

  • Amy Beth

That one’s called “Sing A Song”. I would actually enjoy someone choosing that. It would 100% expose their voice.

  • Nostradamos

Time for pee pee dance boy to go back to the coffee shops…zzzzzzzzzzzz

  • jt45

Can Jena and Jess BOTH do Human?

  • Marko

Phoebe Buffay is waiting for her duet partner.

  • girlygirl

Jessica and Jena have the best songs. Not that the guys’ songs are bad necessarily, they are just far more predictable than Jess’s or Jena’s.

I will say I’m interested to see what Sam does with “Sing”. Because that is not a “typical” laid back singer/songwriter song — it is far poppier and uptempo than most of Ed Sheeran’s other songs (at least his other singles)

  • Nostradamos

Not sure if a full Vegas Review could get Keith to “get” Jess…hell, he couldn’t even explain WTF he meant last week…..Personally, I saw plenty of ‘connection’ in her in the last few weeks….not everyone is a circus monkey, nor do they need to be.

  • NancP

Not a huge Sam fan…but just listened to his How to Save a Life on the Phillipines I-tunes and it is awesome…have only been able to find Jena’s and Sam’s songs on any itunes list…sigh

  • MoneyPenny

Should be an interesting nite. Most of these songs I’ve never heard of.

  • Marko

With these song choices Caleb shoud be prepared for elimination.

  • Call_girl

I agree completely. They praise Alex for standing there doing nothing and she does the same and gets slammed??!!

  • LeoCS

    You really think so?

  • Marko

Yes, and I like Caleb. Terrible song choices IMO.

  • chillj

Someone needs to tweet Jessica to watch the first part of TVLIne Reality Check before she goes on tonight: that would get her dander up for her performance tonight and induce her to kill her songs.

  • EvilTroyandEvilAbed

This cover could work for Jess. If she makes it more acoustic or folksy, it could work for her. I think its a good choice for her though.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPLgXcxMEQc

  • LeoCS

Yep, I think asteroid song is pretty obvious but he couldn’t choose too much this week.

The thing is that he hardly has any competition this year, so he doesn’t need to change up that much.

    For me he’s completely safe.

  • Marko

What about the other song? Many describe him as 80s cheesy rock cover singer and now he’s singing Whitesnake.

  • LeoCS

It’s cheesy but it’s a VERY GOOD cheese that people love. If he had real competition I think he’d be really changing up much more. But he doesn’t need now. At elast Sam and Jessica will go home before him and he knows it.

His best performance until now was Skyfall. If he really needed, he would be doing something like that every week. It’s very sad he doesn’t need to.

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

Hey, he started the season as a total 1970s throwback, so he’s picked up a full decade!

Actually, the Meat Loaf Muffin hit the early 1990s last week, since the Black Crowes song was from 1992 (really, truly!) and his interpretation of “Undo It” was pure unadulterated Bat Out of Hell 2-era Meat Loaf.

I think a goal like 2004 might yet be in reach by the end of his run.

ETA: I’m starting to wonder if the MLM thinks he’s showing us variety with various gradations and eras of loud, up-tempo rock music. I sorta buy it because I’m all “oh, this one’s metal and this one’s funk-influenced and this one’s arena rock,” but the distinctions are probably too subtle for the mass audience.

  • Trina

I’m not sure how the White Snake song will translate but as bad as IDWMAT is I think older Idol viewers will eat it up with a spoon. Its a good ole sentimental favorite. Heck even viewers who just love cheese will love it. I’m embarrassed to admit how many weddings I attended where that was the couples SONG. TOO.DAMN.MANY ugh.

  • Marko

But he definitely needs to gain some new fans. Not with these songs IMO.
By the way, James Durbin sang Don’t Stop Believin’ the night when he was eliminated.

  • zubin
  • Ivan Guzman

    YES. PLEASE.

  • Kimmy Moores

I’m not saying she shouldn’t go for. I’m saying that with her track record for emotion she’ll suck the song dry of it if she keeps up what she’d been doing prior to bits of last week of course.

  • Florence Caroline

I’m hoping for something more like

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gB1G–PHI4

  • disqus_l9306FWZtD

I love Within Temptation – have a bunch of their songs – Sharon is always wonderful.

  • zubin

You’re right about Sam’s second song, which is a risk. How he handles Sing will determine how Sam places this week. He’s either going to need to change it up or he’s going to have to show us some things he hasn’t yet done on the show: a lot of falsetto and highly syncopated delivery.

  • colette

Other than “Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” (which should have been retired after David Cook sang it), the only tune I know here is “Valerie.” Clearly they went with more current(?) stuff by bands that people over 30 haven’t heard of. Or maybe just me! Hope those are good songs, with actual melodies….

  • disqus_l9306FWZtD

I listened to Jess’snippet and it leans towards this version.

  • Adrian Sewell

I’ve always wanted Caleb to do Whitesnake and Still Of The Night is a great pick. But I’m not a fan of his second choice. Jessica has the most interesting song choices and can really have a moment with Summertime Sadness.

  • Sassycatz

Lord, she has such an unpleasant voice.

  • Q3

Caleb has two too old songs — #2 Still of the Night by Whitesnake released in 1987.

  • amadcow2

Based on the update, I would say that Jessica and Caleb are in group 1, Alex and Sam are in group 2 and Jena is the Huff (correctly selecting the group with Caleb in it). I think Sam goes home.

  • jga94

    Wow!Sing!Sam sure is fighting….he’s taking risks….I think he’s a smart enough kid who knows what he’s doing….

  • maymirabella

LOL, they can duet on Smelly Cat, LOL!!!!! Alex and Sam also have the Chandler Bing photo smile down pat too so they will fit right in..HeeHee

  • halo9125

The problem (or maybe it’s deliberate) with these kids doing more current songs is that the newer music doesn’t require much in the way of vocal ability. A lot of it is not very melodic- which is probably why I just completely zoned out while listening to Alex’s “Say Something”.

Prediction: long and painful evening full of filler and undeserved platitudes (plus a lot of shoulder shimmies from Keith and shots of JLo emoting).

  • Matthew Kitson

Jess is poised for a terrific night, Sam for a disastrous one . Alex could have a meh night. Personally, with how caleb did faithfully well, i think he can do idwtmaf well. And Jena should have a good night

  • Incipit

“The problem (or maybe it’s deliberate) with these kids doing more current songs is that the newer music doesn’t require much in the way of vocal ability. A lot of it is not very melodic- “

Huh. Good point. Maybe it is deliberate. TPTB pick a cast where very few of them have much going on vocally – it’s certainly better to pick these stylized songs that haven’t got much to challenge them. It’s just not very entertaining. But with this cast, I guess you can’t have everything.

  • jt45

Oh Boy… well I only listened to part of Summertime Sadness but I am hating it. I hope her live version is less beachy/karaoke

  • Valarie

I love Young The Giant, and Jena sounds awesome on ‘MyBody’. I think she have changed my mind about this season being a waste of time.

  • Casey

She tweeted Slezak this past week saying something about liking a post of his on TV Live so maybe she saw Reality Check. It was so funny! I was dying and laughing out loud at my desk at work. oops!

  • Q3

ETA: I just listened to the iTunes versions — and Sam better look really cute tonight — cause his singing in not going to get his through. And I think Caleb is pretty good, not Cook-good but pretty good. I may be apologizing later tonight for my comment below about Caleb.

    ***

Alex has two great songs. If he can’t do something with “Sweater Weather” it will not be because of a poor song choice. Prefect for him. And IMO “Say Something” gives him a great vocal showcase song.

Caleb is doing two old rock songs one of which should be retired, ” I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing by Aerosmith”. Since he apparently can’t do anything new or distinctive with these 80’s rock power ballads*, I am totally bored with him. (Yes, I know that IDW… was released in 1998, but it is still an 80’s rock power ballad.) If he surprises me and does something different, I will post an apology. I may not expecting to say, “sorry”.

Sam, I am not a fan, but these are two great song choices – “Sing” should give him a chance to do something interesting vocally — if he does the falsetto part. And, “How to Save a Life” is also a good choice, it was an Adult Pop monster and is still played on radio — 7 years later, and I think most people in the Idol audience will know it. I think it will be a good night for Sam.

Jena Irene – “My Body” seems like an odd choice for her. It is not really current, and it was not a hit. And think Amy Winehouse is a good artist for her to cover, “Rehab” is Amy’s only US hit. “Valerie” is a song I do not think most people in the Idol audience would know. Two relatively unknown songs seems like an odd choice to me.

Jess had two good choices — “Human” by Christina Perri is current and have a nice melody. Hopefully she just keeps it plain and does not add any extra runs, or big, complex high notes. Not needed for this song. And her second song, “Summertime Sadness” is my favorite song + Idol of the night. She should slay on this. And even if someone has been living under a pop music rock, the hook is irresistible.

Just based on the choices and what these singers are capable of, this could be a good night for Alex, Sam and Jess. I think Jena Irene is safe even and could be great, just has a bit of a challenge with songs a lot of people do not know. I think Caleb may be at risk — these are two boring, awful songs. If he does not do something new with them, he really should be the one to go. [Caleb please surprise me and send Sam home instead.]

  • Q3

Oh, I love “Summertime Sadness”. All a matter of taste but the song fits Jess.

ETA: I have not listen to the iTunes version because I plan to watch tonight. I do not want a total spoiler.

  • Casey

Jess is my fave and I also hope she changes up her live version a bit to be more interesting. This song goes no where for me.

  • LA944

IA. Generally, most pop music today lacks melody and interesting, unexpected chord changes. I can hear a new song and know what the next chord is going to be before the change even happens. It’s just so predictable. Even worse–is when I think the chord will change and it SHOULD change–but it stays the same

The other day my husband was watching The Voice. They had some group playing a new song. At least it was new to me. I could sing along with melody in 2 secs cause it was the same damn thing over and over again. He was laughing.

It just is the way it is now.

  • halo9125

My point exactly. That’s not to say that some of the old weekly themes didn’t need to be retired- because they most certainly did. But the majority of these contestants don’t have much in way of a range, and the more current music fits them better. And you are right- it’s NOT entertaining at all.

  • Casey

    1. I am really hoping Alex plays the piano and has a female backup singer in the chorus. Just fantasizing over here! ;P
    2. Caleb will have a “moment” (even though this is a tired old song) followed by 2 judges standing ovation and “goosies”. (just threw up in my mouth a bit)
    3. Hopefully the other song by Sam will bring some life to his chances continuing in this competition.
    4. Not sure Jena can get through this without swallowing her words. Could get screechy.
    5. Jessica will be helped by the shorter version of the song at the live show. She will slay this song. The judges give vague feedback and deny her a well deserved round of applause/standing O.

  • akramwwhhoo

So the group number is definitely, Alex & Sam and Jessica, Jena, & Caleb?

  • blissful2

Shocked. Sam sounds great. Voice seems grittier, not as perfect. Like Jessica. Like Jena’s song, but not her voice. Alex’s is meh — could not not get into it.

  • Tess Herself

Amy Winehouse had fantastic diction and didn’t get lost in the most wordy of songs…which Valerie is one. I can’t imagine any Idol contestant doing this justice…so sarcastically I’ll say ‘good luck Jena’ cause she is going to need it.

ETA: Just listened to her Giant song above…this girl has major mush mouth aka Allison Iraheta.

  • Pat H

Well, Alex is either going to have a moment or put me to sleep! I prefer Say Something as a duet.

  • Tess Herself

Exactly why, halo, I’ve always been “anti” current music where so much of it requires little skill to sing. Very few of these songs are about any kind of vocal ability since they are so identified with electronic manipulation. I really think that getting away from ‘great’ music is what has hurt Idol, for me, more than anything.

  • CanadianLady

Sorry, but all I can think about is that Dexter was going to sing “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” and that might have been an actual moment. Sigh.

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

    Amy Winehouse had fantastic diction

Whut? Amy Winehouse swallowed words so hard she sounded as if she was gargling.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqSKVv6YO8g

  • Guest

I’m with you…. I only like Say Something as a duet with a female. Like Alex & Sierra.

  • Tess Herself

Depends on if she was sober. Besides she is singing with a jazz intonation. I can totally understand her.

  • Casey

My guess is Caleb and the girls for the Stones song and Sam/Alex for the other. Wish I was in another time zone. MST is on a one hour delay. Boo!

  • Casey

Hopefully there will be a female harmony in the chorus. That will help a ton!

  • Caroline B

And shots of audience girls that make Sam look melodramatic and hysterical in comparison to their dead eyes and slack jawed smiles. As Slezak said, maybe we’re not emotionally connecting to these contestants because they’re only on camera 1/3 of their performance time.

  • Brynn

I’m SO nervous about Jena singing “Valerie”. I think it’s just an awful song choice for her, and I’m annoyed at producers for putting it on the list, when she had tons of great fan song choices. Do they want her to do poorly tonight or what? Luckily, “My Body” is an amazing song choice for her, but with her performance positions, I don’t see her getting the big votes tonight.

Caleb’s song choices are eh, too. I worry he and Jena could be in the bottom 2 tomorrow, which would just be horrifying.

  • Trina

ITA he would have done a great job. Mark Chestnutt recorded an AMAZING country cover of it and I figured this is what Dexter would have done

    http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4e1rm_i-don-t-want-to-miss-a-thing-mark-c_music

  • MB

Dexter must be kickin himself for not havin the chance to sing this. Lol.

  • Ryan Conrad

YES LANA YES. YES JESS YES!!! She definitely got the most current songs. C’mon Jess, kill’em!

  • Casey

    Spoiler Alert!!!
Special appearances by Donald Sterling of the LA Clippers and Smelly Cat! Guest judges are Milli Vanilli and ET phones home!

  • Matthew Richards

Confession: I kind of like the asteroid song.

  • Q3

Everybody likes the asteroid song, but only some of us are big enough to admit it in public. I still think it have been done in too many karaoke bars and music games to be taken seriously unless it is reinvented in someway. JMHO.

  • Guest
  • Q3

Unfortunately, I think he may put you to sleep. ;) I really like Alex, but he is so laid back….

  • HermeticallySealed

I do not like it, not at all. That said, it doesn’t bother me when contestants sing it beyond just that it’s kind of overdone.

  • Ringo Pascual

With Amy W., throw out all your rules and conceptions about what is right. She was genius, plain and simple. While I have seen passable versions of this song after Amy’s, they are usually ultra-pop versions where the tone is straightforward, crisp and not overwrought. In other words, precisely the opposite of what Jena gives us each week. I expect a train wreck that the judges will go bonkers over.

  • shenanigan

Hmmm. Do you all think this song is reserved for contestants TPTB want to dispatch? Just wondering.

  • Incipit

“As Slezak said, maybe we’re not emotionally connecting to these contestants because they’re only on camera 1/3 of their performance time.”

All that cutting away from the contestant has been aggravating to the ‘nth degree, but now I’m curious. When did this really start to happen – is it fresh for this panel, has there been a slow creep over the last few seasons where the attention switched to the judges’ reaction shots and away from the performance – I’m really not sure.

I just dropped back a couple seasons to watch a few older performances w/ the original Panel – and that was not happening to this degree. Maybe all this snarky remarks about JLo’s contract have some truth?

    Geeze.

  • chillj

Well, she would LOVE his reality check, then! maybe he commented there on the criticisms of her performance, too. He likes her.

  • jcabby

She got two great songs to build her standing. I hope she does well!

  • girlygirl

    I don’t like it

  • Pat H

Yes! Loved it more than the original!

  • akramwwhhoo

i’m tired of alex&sam duet, I liked “she’s mine” but it’s a group number, don’t need to expect much

  • MichaelG

Aside from the inane lyrics…I never really minded the asteroid song. I’m just sick of hearing the overwrought deliveries of this ‘most dreaded retread’ on AI.

  • MichaelG

Amy Winehouse, whilst very talented (I’m a fan), did not have the best diction. On many recordings, she sounded slurred and drunk…probably because she was. Diction was not always her strong suit.

  • certain1

Welp, I guess i’ll be skipping to tonight. Half of these songs I have never heard of and the others hold no interest. I don’t think I will be the only one. :(

  • Sdmama

Oh, boy I feel I am in such a minority. I like Astroid song. I listend to Caleb’s recording. He sounds beautiful and tender, and slow, and, oh, no, boring. zzzzzz. Is it he is planning on live show, too? Do people like this rendition? (Duck!)

I listen to Sam. I like Fray just fine, and I found this recording beautiful. I can picture myself buying his song, if he puts out something like this song in the future. (Duck again!)

I am not looking at him so I have no idea how stiff he might look with his guitar, but hey if we want to excuse Jessica for just standing there, Sam should get a pass, too. It cannot be just for Alex. They will all sound terrific on radio. For that matter, all five of them sound wonderful to me. I think we have a great top 5 this year. (Duck, one more time!)
Now, American Idol is a “live show” so we need visual aid. Caleb will be helped live, and Sam won’t. We can use Adam Lambert about now one more time as a production/clothing coach. No?

  • HKfan

Love Human by Christina Perri…….not sure how it will sound sung by Jess though.

  • macfae

I’ve noticed it and hate it. JLo gets so much face time that her reactions can color the perception of the performance by the viewer.
And no, I would not be surprised if it was in her contract.

  • AndyDD

I expect to see Tawny Kitaen writhing on a Jaguar as a graphic background for Caleb. Otherwise why go there.

  • HKfan

Human is out at the moment…don’t know where it is on the charts as I don’t watch them, but Christina Perri was this months featured artist on Channel V in Asia so hear it constantly. She’s got some great songs, worth youtubing.
Really like Best day of my life by American Authors too, don’t like the new Ed Sheeran song though.
    BTW…I’m way over 30!!!

  • HKfan

Thanks for asking that question…..I had been wondering too:)

  • colette

so am I! but you’re obviously a much more with-it person than me HKfan!

  • aaskork

I felt something was missing from Jessica’s live Summertime Sadness, but this studio recording is incredible. It’s really why I’m such a big Jessica fan; her live performances are okay but she records beautifully, which is really what’s going to matter after Idol.
