I think Clay Aiken was a wildcard he got pretty far. But you’re right, usually wildcards are kicked out early

I get why the show would prefer a non “WGWG” to win this season. Even if the 5 previous winners aren’t really all that similar in style to one another, the publi perception is that they are similar, and that you can’t win if you aren’t a “cute” guy who can play a guitar. Also, considering that most of the successful current pop artists are women, I’m sure AI would like to try and have a winner who might be able to be part of that trend.

However, considering that the last 2 male “WGWG” winners have been quite successful post-Idol (to date, anyway), I personally don’t think that having another similar winner in S12 would be a real problem (especially if he goes on to have anywhere near the success that Scotty and Phillip have had). The show certainly doesn’t have a problem pimping their most successful alums, no matter what gender or genre they are.

I don’t mind the idea of the wildcards.  Sometimes there are just really good people who manage to have a really off night during the semi-finals (Matt Giraud anyone?).  Some of my favorite Idols have technically been wildcards and quite often they can outlast at least some of the folks that got in through America’s votes.  My issue is when the judges waste it on people that have no chance of hanging on more than another week (or two).  For instance, Jeremy Rosado last season.  It was kind of obvious the poor guy was likely just going to be making his exit the following week, which he did.  I know someone has to go, but it seemed like a waste of a pick.

The save I can do without, but that is more about trying to make good television than anything else.  Unfortunately, the feel good moment aspect of it has been kind of lost now that we’ve seen it all before, so I think it’s time to retire that trick.

Whoever wins, guy or girl, will have to sell, sell, sell or they will be gone, gone, gone.

Interscope/Jimmy Iovine is known to move on a lot quicker.  Pia only got one single.  Despite a lot of talk of a CD, that never happened.  Haley got a CD/single.  But when neither of them was able to hit the ground running, the label dropped them.

  • Incipit

I’m hoping there are NO wild cards.

I don’t see why the show needs any Wild Cards this season, girlygirltoo. Like the infamous “Save” – that’s just an over-ride on the viewer’s vote. (that hasn’t even happened yet, won’t happen for a while) With the judges already making the Sudden Death choices instead, they will have five chances each week at their own WildCard pick already…unless they need to second guess their own choices, another WildCard round is redundant, IMO.

FINALLY Johnny Keyser goes home and not a minute too soon. He had all
the attitude of a star and none of the talent to back it up. BUH bye.

EXACTLY, laahdeedaah. I missed this piece of news, but I am pleased to read it. Didn’t like him last year, liked him even less this year, he performed like the Heir Presumptive, but there was no substance to him. IMO.

I don’t care if they Save or not.  But, would Jessica be having the career she’s having if she had left early?  I doubt it.  A little glitter falls on the Runner-up.

  • elliegrll

I think that the wild cards are fake drama, but if done right, meaning not like last season, they can make for good television.  A lot of the televised audition rounds, like the group round, are fake, but they are still fun to watch.

    Charlie plays a mean electric.

I don’t think there was anything wrong with how the wildcard situation was handled last season, outside as said I think Jeremy was a waste of a pick.  I thought the way it was handled in S11 made for decently good television though.  The other two picks IMO were fine (EVP, DeAndre) and were at least different and distinctive voices for Idol and both managed to outlast some others that had been voted through.

I don’t mind wildcards and I don’t mind saves. Wildcards give a few more people a second chance, and maybe they can at least make the tour. In a sudden death type situation I think wildcards are key, since its not like the audience got to see them over the course of 3 weeks like in the old format. So some good people who had a bad night might deserve a second chance.

The save doesn’t bother me either. The audience picks the winner it wants regardless. Bottom line is I do think some people go out too early on a fluke and its nice to give the audience a redo. If the audience really wanted that person gone then they will go over the next few weeks anyway.

  • irockhard

They might if they need to fill up broadcasting time. I think they have a week extra or something without a wildcard round.

Isn’t sudden death pretty much what they did last year with “sing for your life” in Vegas (next to that creepy bubbling river)? The only difference is that last year they made the cuts in a separate episode rather than on the spot after the singing.

  • irockhard

Yeah and I’m not liking Jessica’s chances right now either.

  • justmefornow

Jessica seems to be very popular over seas, not so much maybe here from what I can tell. When her album finally comes out, she may have a really rough time with sales over here, and Jimmy has a quick trigger finger.

I wish her luck. I think she’s going to need. it.

I heard that JDA sings Adele while writhing on the stage and Charlie goes spastic with mic stand. Also, Curtis went last and had to sing his song twice due to camera issues, but the judges only gave feedback on the FIRST performance, so the one that we will see wont be the one that they commented on.

LOL, this should be an entertaining episode.

and Jimmy will play tie breaker tonight

  • curly_yenta

Quirky?  Taylor and Clay had/have the talent to back up their likability factor.  That’s why Taylor won, and Clay came in 2nd.  Ultimately, you need to be able to sing, entertain, project and get people to care about you.  Otherwise, you lose.

curtis seems like josh ledet 2.0 but i like josh better…
