    Charlie Askew
    CurtisFinch jr
    Devin Velez
    Johnny Keyser
are def through… but i can’t choose between Paul Jolley and Jimmy Smith for that final spot. I favor jolley because i like his voice/style better.

  • http://twitter.com/bignliddle BigNLiddle

Hmm, pretty sure the judges will put as few WGWG as possible lol

  • LeahKittyS

How about scrap Curtis and give me both Paul and Jimmy? Johnny I could also do without. Charlie and Devin I like. Plus, I have a feeling JDA could surprise us.

  • mtthew

I’m hoping so!! I don’t like curtis’s divo attitude and i feel johnny doesn’t take this seriously… i would prefer Johnny and JDA over them.

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

Let’s go CHARLIE!!  I predict 3 that go through will be real contenders for the Top 10 Finals.  And 2 will be put through as voting fodder.

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

“are def through… but i can’t choose between Paul Jolley and Jimmy
Smith for that final spot. I favor jolley because i like his voice/style
    better.”

I’m so conflicted.  On the one hand, Paul cries like a little baby.  On the other, Jimmy’s fake tan and 1970s body wave perm makes me want to shave his head and exfoliate him until his natural skin tone returns.

    It’s a tough decision.

  • johnkay

not so sure about johnny, it might be 2/3 of paul, jimmy, johnny

  • irockhard

After what we saw happen last night, don’t count out the fodders.

  • Kirsten

Yes, at first pass, that’s who I think will go through. I don’t even know who Chris Watson is so I take that as a bad sign for him.

Still, they need to put some fodder through and have a shocking elimination, so I’m guessing we’ll see some changes in the line-up. I was surprised by what happened the previous night with the girls.

  • Kirsten

If they get eliminated during this round, can they come back next year?

  • LeahKittyS

Yes, they can. Nigel has confirmed that on Twitter.

  • Kirsten

Yay! And thanks for the info.

  • jammasta

Charlie Askew is the only definite spot to me. Go awkward!

Problem with tonight, 4 of my 5 favorite guys are singing tonight. I agree with Leah. Screw Curtis, give me Paul and Jimmy. Yes, Paul is a little bit… emotional, but he did have someone’s death on his mind both times he was shown wreck-ishly. And he’s my favorite of the guys. And he favorited a tweet I tweeted, but that’s beside the point. And Jimmy may look a bit weird, but even if he is kinda the same genre as Paul, he’s a great singer. And neither of them seem like douchebags like Curtis. Curtis is a great singer, but I don’t see him going as far as either Paul or Jimmy if he’s put through, and I kinda see the runs and stuff that Mariah and Randy have inexplicable orgasms over getting to his head and ruining each of his song choices. I had enough of that with Jacob Lusk. Even Joshua Ledet got a bit annoying at times with the runs, but he did them so well that I wanted him in the finale.

Devin had an R&B-ish voice and his Facebook likes seem to indicate a rock influence, so please send him through.

    Charlie
    Paul
    Devin
    Jimmy
    Curtis

Those would be my choices for the guys to send through. But I see Johnny having a shot. I don’t know enough about Chris, Elijah, JDA, or Kevin to gauge them.

…Tonight’s gonna be a stressful one lol. There’s so little wiggle room for the guys I want to get through.

  • jammasta

Some of those people would probably not have been considered fodder had they been exposed earlier. Not that it’s a new thing for Idol, but it is kind of annoying.

  • http://twitter.com/bigtimeidolfan BTR5CountryIdolFan

I’m hoping JDA makes it through and does well. He’s the kind of person I connected with the most. <333

  • dallashunters

    Go Devin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Love this guy!

  • http://www.facebook.com/redsphilliesastros Shannon Hayden

i like several guys but i’m pulling for paul jolley the most

  • http://twitter.com/dam744 Damien Roberts

Not even going to guess…after last nights cuts there are so many people we have yet to see.

  • jammasta

I agree. I would lol if Chris, Kevin, JDA, Elijah, and Johnny all went through. I’d also be thoroughly pissed.

I’m more concerned about this group of guys than I am about any of the other groups they’ve put together. I’m waiting more for spoilers than I am watching tonight’s show.

One of the fodder is inevitably gonna make it over one of my Top 5 and/or Johnny.

  • http://twitter.com/dam744 Damien Roberts

I think if Elijah makes the top 20 some of the favorites are in trouble. He’s probably one of the better looking guys, but has a generic kind of r&b voice…the type teenage girls will eat up.

  • dallashunters

I will say this when they get down to the top 20, this will be the first time EVER we will have heard all the contestants each sing live in front of judges/studio audience.  So if they get cut when the voting starts, they will have all gotten at least 2 shots on national TV….unlike they other years where they really never had a chance.  I’m shocked Shuba’s gone….

  • johnkay

the show is over people are tweeting that they are out

  • johnkay

@Justinnminaj “Next episode is craaazy !”

  • dallashunters

Last night we all glued to one teenage girl on twitter who looked like she was going give the full scoop on everything, but disappeared into star worship leaving hungry Idol zealots like us looking for crumbs anywhere we could get em!

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

No thanks, I need to disagree with you politely.  Paul’s good friend had passed away and he was a nervous wreck.  It is Lazaro who will need the box of Puffs.

I am angry that we know nothing about JDA and he’s up against some really talented (and cute) guys.  Most of my favorite talent is in this group!

  • jammasta

I actually looked at her Twitter tonight. She couldn’t go to tonight’s show, but she has tickets to all 4 shows.

I agree, Kariann. Paul has been shown to be pretty emotional during his audition and his final song, but he was dealing with death during both instances. And I’m also annoyed that this group is so talented. Can we send… like, 7 of them through instead of 5? I’ve been more concerned with this result than I have been with tonight’s show.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/6I5UHCVHYO4NDWVALY2543MYNA Sean

So glad Charlie and Devin made it!!!

  • Larc

I can overlook Lazaro’s tears.  He has probably had so much hurt in his life that happiness overwhelms him.

  • dallashunters

    My boy Devin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Yes sir!

  • jammasta

OMG YES YES YES!!! AT THE RESULTS!!!!!

Charlie, Paul, and Devin made it. Feeling pretty strangely BEAST MODE-ish right now.

    Sad about Jimmy, though.

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSS!!  My little awkward unicorn Charlie made it!!!!  That’s all I care about.  Now I can vote for him!!

  • girlygirltoo

So Johnny didn’t make it. TBH, I never understood why he got pimped…I didn’t see anything special in him.

Glad Charlie and Elijah made it through. Not really interested in the other 3…although that could change

  • earthy

I’m glad to see the overrated Johnny Keyser didn’t make it. He messed up so badly in Hollywood he should of been sent home on the spot.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/6GP6C4BSU6GW6CXMUE3WKIXFYQ Dis Person

    UGH. Jada goes home..
I’m so disappointed.  UGH UGH UGH UGH

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/4OD4PUPLTHTGLOH5XZ6GEHAQ3Y Jesse

Happy about Paul and Charlie. Pretty excited to watch this tomorrow night now that I know they’re safe!

  • johnkay

Happy Johnny Keyser didn’t make it his audition wasn’t that good and audition is horrible who’s the WGWG? does paul play guitar? charlie?

  • http://twitter.com/bigtimeidolfan BTR5CountryIdolFan

I’m very sad about JDA not making it. :( Oh well. Looks like this is another season 9 for me. :/

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/4OD4PUPLTHTGLOH5XZ6GEHAQ3Y Jesse

None of these guys fit typical WGWG mode to me.

  • jammasta

Johnny seemed a lot better last year. More confident (if not a bit cocky?), less messy looking. This year, he looked really defeated and boring. I didn’t care at all about him. Maybe next year?

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

Now I want the dirt.  Why do people say it was “crazy”?

  • tigervixxxen

Wow Jimmy Smith is out? And makes sense Keyser was cut before voting rounds, they’d never get rid of him. Though that’s a bit surprising. Glad to see Paul had a good night, I wanted to see more of him.

  • tigervixxxen

  • kay121

saw that Paul went first and sang a keith urban song.  johnny went second and sang jason mraz, i won’t give up.  JDA third

  • johnkay

“I won’t give up” by mraz – I think it’s time for keyser to give up lol

  • fantoo1

JDA was obviously not in the zone.

  • fantoo1

Happy Charlie and Devin made it. Better luck next year Johnny.

  • sue

OMG! Thanks for the spoilers MJ. I am so happy that Charlie is through. So glad that they got rid of Johnny, I can’t stand him.  :)

  • johnkay

chris watson (whoever he is) sand sittin on the dock of the bay

  • johnkay

    Devin sang in “spanglish”

  • kay121

oops.. looks like JDA was 4th.  Kevin Harris was 3rd.  Elijah Liu 5th. Chris watson 6th and sang singing on the dock of the bay. Devin 7th and sang in spanglish..    Courtesy of @idolspoilers.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/XDQP2Y46M5B3OHOKALDDGDHQCM Leandro

Charlie! WGWG6 and one of my fave! lol

  • johnkay

    order:
paul, johnny, kevin, JDA, elijah, chris, devin, jimmy (also sang keith urban), curtis (gospel song duh), charlie pimp spot

  • johnkay

pretty good top 20 so far and we didn’t even get to janelle, candice, jett, christabelle, melinda, rachel, burnell, cortez, and nick

  • johnkay

pretty good top 20 so far and we didn’t even get to janelle, candice, jett, christabelle, melinda, rachel, burnell, cortez, and nick

  • http://twitter.com/tle2000 Taylor

Jimmy (aka WGWG #6) is GONE GONE GONE!!!!!!   I knew it.  Yep, Idol is getting rid of all the WGWGs (Jimmy and Johnny) just in time for the voting rounds. Just like I predicted.

Paul is too effeminate and Charlie is too eccentric to be a “WGWG”, so they don’t count.

  • jammasta

So this makes up half of our Top 20:

    Charlie Askew
    Paul Jolley
    Devin Velez
    Curtis Finch Jr.
    Elijah Liu
    Adriana Latonio
    Angela Miller
    Kree Harrison
    Amber Holcomb
    Tenna Torres

And this is without the following stories/people I think are good:

    Nick Boddington
    Lazaro Arbos
    Janelle Arthur
    Rachel Hale
    Candice Glover
    Zoanette Johnson
    Burnell Taylor

As far as my opinion goes, with those people in mind, the Top 10 should be:

Guys: Charlie, Paul, Nick, Devin, Burnell
Girls: Angela, Kree, Janelle, Candice, Adriana

Burnell and Adriana both last because they can easily be replaced by someone else in my Top 10 if they perform better.

  • LeahKittyS

“Gone Gone Gone.” Did you do that on purpose? Because if you did, that’s awesome. “For you…for you…baby I’m not moving on, I’ll love you long after you’re gone…”

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

Idol Spoilers say Charlie performed 8th and sang “Rocket Man” by Elton John.

  • http://twitter.com/blkeener Brittany Keener

Johnny is out?!!? Too good to be true…now my wish is that IF there is a wild card (which there has to be….) that HE does not get pulled back in.

  • johnkay

yup it was changed he first said charlie closed show

  • jammasta

….And I don’t think Johnny is a “WGWG” (have we seen him play guitar?), yet I see him with the label and strangely have no problem with it.

And I did like both Charlie and Paul more than Jimmy and Johnny.

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

I think the Guys will be more of a threat than anticipated!  It’s starting to look like a terrific season!  I certainly hope so!

  • http://twitter.com/HighTensions Jake W.

Yay Charlie! Hahha, about time Johnny is gone! Smart move idol.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jenny.williams.391 Jenny Williams

“too eccentric”??? I like Charlie a lot, but I thought “WGWG” stands for WHITE guy WITH GUITAR. Charlie ticks both of those boxes. He’s white AND he plays guitar. He counts. If Charlie wins, he will be WGWG#6.

  • Pat S

Man, I like Elijah’s song choice. Definitely one of the best Bruno Mars’ songs.

  • mchcat

I like Paul – he is good – sorry about Jimmy thou

  • irockhard

Not every WGWG wins, see Paul McDonald.

  • irockhard

The only 2 I like from these 5 are Charlie & Elijah.

  • dishwalla

WGWG Casey James didn’t win.  Neither did White Girl With Guitar Crystal Bowersox.

From the above 5, Paul Jolley & Elijah Liu could be the heart trobes.

  • irockhard

Paul has the looks but he’s too effeminate. If Josh Holiday makes it through next week more likely he’s be competing with Elijah to be the S12 heart throb.

  • maymirabella

I believe Charlie plays guitar. I think so much depends on next week and if Josh makes it.  As possibly he and Charlie and Paul would be fan favorites and they could possibily keep a girl from winning this year.  ..just a hunch. I am so glad Jimmy and Johnny did not make it as I was afraid they would get a lot of votes.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/4OD4PUPLTHTGLOH5XZ6GEHAQ3Y Jesse

Paul’s the best looking of the bunch, but I think he’s out (could be wrong) which might cause him some problems. Or might get him more fans?

dishwalla, White Girl With Guitar made me laugh. If a girl wins this year, it’ll probably be White Girl With Piano.

  • http://twitter.com/bluinjewin Landon Cox

Because there was another WGWG that Simon was pimping to tank Idol

  • Liteasy

So was Adam, and he did pretty well coming in 2nd.  It’s known that Paul has a girlfriend, too.

  • dabney c

You were afraid that good guys might make top 20 because they would threaten a girl win? Personally, I’m bummed about Jimmy. He could have given the girls a run for their money, and that’s what I’m interested in seeing in a competition.

  • irockhard

But he didn’t win, neither did Clay.

I will lol if Paul and Elijah are the final 2 with Elijah winning cause Elijah = Kris Allen the Asian version.

  • dishwalla

Elijah also plays guitar and he has the whole boy next door thing going.  He could be the underdog like Kris Allen.

Charlie being eccentric will work against him for the win.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/4OD4PUPLTHTGLOH5XZ6GEHAQ3Y Jesse

I don’t think Elijah would win over Paul. The only thing Paul and Adam have in common is being gay. But Paul’s still a down home country boy. Loved Adam, but he was pretty over the top and not typical for what this audience usually likes.

  • justmefornow

LOL. Where is it known that Paul has a girlfriend?
    Can we say “beard”?

  • maymirabella

Oh I openly admit that I want a girl to win and I do not want another wgwg type to win…or the cute white boy thing to keep happening on this show.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/4OD4PUPLTHTGLOH5XZ6GEHAQ3Y Jesse

I’m curious when people say something like that, are they not open to any white guy winning no matter their brand of singing? If they didn’t play a guitar would it be okay? I find the girls kind of lackluster this year, except for Kree.

  • irockhard

The audience also likes their cute guys to be laid back confident types and the last edit Paul got portrayed him as somewhat neurotic and self conscious.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/4OD4PUPLTHTGLOH5XZ6GEHAQ3Y Jesse

Very true. Hopefully he can hold it together from here on out.

  • dishwalla

Not having the stereotypical “WGWG” doesn’t mean a girl will win. You can still have 2 guys in the final. I am not a fan of Lazaro, but the guy is getting a lot of fan attention/sympathy.

  • http://twitter.com/raya4 raya

Lazaro is getting a lot of fan attention, but he’s also a guy with a clearly limited knowledge of music and I can see him being a bit of a mess/trainwreck by the end of the season.  I do expect he will go deep, unless he turns in an utterly horrible performance next week.  But keep in mind by the end of the season these kids are generally asked to be performing at least 2-3 songs a week and they often only get a day or two to learn anything.  I just think he’s going to have a hard time keeping up at some point.

  • Liteasy

    His own words:  http://www.reverbnation.com/pauljolleymusic

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/4OD4PUPLTHTGLOH5XZ6GEHAQ3Y Jesse

But that’s 2 years old. And he seems to have a boyfriend now. I wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t address any of it during the show though.

  • fantoo1

    Boyfriend? Where’s proof in that?

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/4OD4PUPLTHTGLOH5XZ6GEHAQ3Y Jesse

Fans tend to find things pretty quickly about Idol contestants. Anyway, it’s up to Paul to share his personal life or not, so I’ll stop speculating about it now. He’s still my favorite of the guys.

  • justmefornow

I really don’t care either way, lol. He’s a country singer and that’s not my thing AT ALL.
But trying to break into the country market, I would totally get using the beard girlfriend, and not blame him for it.

But he’s not fooling anyone, IMO.

  • fuzzywuzzy

I don’t care either, but Paul pinged on my gaydar and when the first person that Paul hugged when he came out of his audition was a cute guy waiting with his family, I just thought that fit. I’m not a country fan, so I have little interest in Paul advancing. Seems like a good singer though, so he may go deep depending on how he handles the pressure of the live shows.

  • windmills

justmefornow: I really don’t care either way, lol. He’s a country singer and that’s not my thing AT ALL.But trying to break into the country market, I would totally get using the beard girlfriend, and not blame him for it.

I don’t know or care about Paul Jolley’s sexuality but I just want to say that despite him singing country/pop songs, he doesn’t sound like a country singer to me. More of a theatrical pop singer. Maybe his performance tonight will change my mind.

  • irockhard

Yeah I don’t think Lazaro is gonna remain the most popular guy for much longer. Also from what I’ve seen song choice appears to be a weakness.

  • irockhard

Dude pings my gaydar, that’s all I’ll say about that. But anyway I agree with Windmills even though I’m not a country expert myself.

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

“Charlie being eccentric will work against him for the win.”

Very possible.  But if Arkansas was able to sweep Kris Allen to a win, then they might be able to do wonders for Charlie if they rally behind him.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/4OD4PUPLTHTGLOH5XZ6GEHAQ3Y Jesse

Kris swept way more than just Arkansas to win. Can’t forget how good looking he is, which always helps, and he hit his peak at the right time. I don’t think Charlie has that kind of appeal to the masses.

  • justmefornow

I’ll defer to you as well when it comes to country, which I know little about, lol.
But can I ask you this, are there any openly gay male country artists that have hit big?
Maybe it’s like the NFL, players only come out after their playing days are over?
    This could explain a lot.

  • dishwalla

Personality wise, Charlie Askew = Siobhan Magnus.

I don’t see him having the kind of broad appeal of David Arculeta or Scotty McCreery.

  • maattt

Woah, I definitely thought Johnny was gonna make it through. But I guess since JLo isn’t on the panel anymore… haha.

  • irockhard

I would like to know this too. The only openly gay country singer I know of is k.d. lang.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/4OD4PUPLTHTGLOH5XZ6GEHAQ3Y Jesse

Chely Wright came out, but that was long after her career had stalled. There are no openly gay male country singers that I know of, and I love country. I think it would be a difficult road, but it’s a new world out there.

  • laahdeedaah

FINALLY Johnny Keyser goes home and not a minute too soon. He had all the attitude of a star and none of the talent to back it up. BUH bye.

Sad to see JDA go home, not surprised, but sad.

  • http://twitter.com/mafs95 Mafalda Abreu

I like Angela, Kree, Candice, Janelle, Melinda, Cristabel, Adriana, Devin, Paul, Nick, Charlie, Burnell and Curtis (even if he’s a douchebag).

  • http://www.facebook.com/jenny.williams.391 Jenny Williams

True. Still we shouldn’t try to sugar coat the fact that Charlie isn’t a WGWG. He may be different, but he’s still a WGWG Regardless of whether he wins or not.

  • mjsbigblog

And if Paul is gay, it’s certainly not going to stop girls from crushing on him. As more and more artists come out, I think the old conventional wisdom, that a gay can’t be a hearthrob has pretty much been proven false.

  • jpfan2

I know that the meme is that another WGWG will kill the show but the last two WGWG winners are actually doing quite well. It’s not like they flopped hard so anyone but a WGWG should win. That said, it is better for the show for a different style of artist to win once in awhile!

Charlie appears to be different and somewhat current. He should go far. Of course the producers are working 24/7 to make sure a girl wins so no guy is really safe. ;0

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/4NGVYB24TB3RAS57EW4NU5Q4MM Katie

It saddens me to hear that Jimmy Smith was cut and Paul Jolley was saved.  I felt Paul Jolley’s lack of professionalism shown after his performance during Hollywood Week should have been more than enough to send him home.  I think this decision is just another obvious cut that leads the producers closer to a girl winner in Season 12.  Unless, they are looking for tv and use the wild card saves for this.  Guess we’ll see in the next week or so.

  • windmills

justmefornow: But can I ask you this, are there any openly gay male country artists that have hit big?

No, not yet. I don’t know how close we are to that time, either.

mjsbigblog:  And if Paul is gay (and it’s not something I sit around thinking about–don’t care really) it’s certainly not going to stop girls from crushing on him. As more and more artists come out, I think the old conventional wisdom, that a gay can’t be a hearthrob has pretty much been proven false.

    ITA.

  • jammasta

Not that it’s something I care about either, but Paul, despite the “other than my girlfriend” thing, does ping the gaydar, kinda like Clay Aiken did (I think? I was, like…. a really sheltered 13 year old at the time). Clay Aiken was pretty popular with the women, wasn’t he? Who knows, Paul could be a really effeminate straight guy. Hell, isn’t Adam Lambert’s bassist straight?

I also give him a pass on the emotional front because he was dealing with a death during his audition and during Hollywood week when he was shown crying, and because I like his voice and genre the most. I also kinda agree with windmills, too. He seems more theatrical pop than country. But hey, I like both, so whichever route he goes is win-win.

I suppose I can also see Charlie as a male Siobhan in a way. Hopefully he sings somewhat like a male Siobhan too! Ya know, before she sang the Chaka Khan song.

I’d think WGWG is reserved more for those whose guitar playing is a defining trait of their performances. Each of the last 5 have filled that mold (Kris, Lee, and P2 most significantly). Charlie’s technically a WGWG I guess, but so far the guitar doesn’t seem like a defining trait.

I hope someone tackles a Muse song this season and puts up a performance that would impress Matt Bellamy. I can see Charlie doing it. If Devin really is a rocker or Paul wants to take theatrical pop to a rock level, they could do it too.

  • http://twitter.com/bagel08 John S

I definitely Charlie has a voice that could rock out.

  • irockhard

Each of the last 5 have filled that mold

Except for Scotty. Honestly I really don’t understand why people keep calling him a WGWG. Almost every country singer plays guitar anyway and Scotty hardly ever performs with one, he’s hardly married to his guitar like the other 4.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/XDQP2Y46M5B3OHOKALDDGDHQCM Leandro

Charlie being eccentric won’t help him? Are u kidding? Fraus love quirky guys. Clay and Taylor Hicks anyone? He’ll be WGWG6 probably.

ETA: not this is a bad thing. This show needs people who the viewers like. This show can survive WGWG10 but can’t survive two or three more groups of finalists that are boring and bland singers/personalities.

  • shell29

How well the last two WGWGs have done post show doesn’t matter. Most Idol viewers don’t care how the winners sell after the confetti falls. It’s no wonder TPTB are pimping the girls so hard-they don’t want the perception out there that White males are the only contestants that can win this show.

I am pleased to see that Johnny Keyser was sent packing. So overrated and not nearly as good as he thinks he is.

  • http://twitter.com/bagel08 John S

Plus he never used his guitar to “flip” a song like the other 4 did.

Technically, Scotty is still a white guy who plays guitar, though, even if, as you noted, he’s not married to it. He’s more distinctive than most of the others aside from David Cook, however. I was gonna make note of that, but I figured picking out Lee, Kris, and P2 would kinda cover that.

So far, all we know is Charlie plays guitar, which makes him a WGWG technically. Question is, do we know if he can play it strongly enough to play it during a performance? And so far, we haven’t seen him like that or married to his guitar.

ETA: not this is a bad thing. This show needs people who the viewers will like. This show can survive WGWG10 but can’t survive two or three more groups of finalists that are boring and bland singers/personalities.

This seems to be the problem more than the WGWG thing. I think it’s also rough when blog favorites Adam, Crystal, Haley, and Jessica were beaten by one (Although I had no problem with Kris or Scotty winning).

It saddens me to hear that Jimmy Smith was cut and Paul Jolley was
saved.  I felt Paul Jolley’s lack of professionalism shown after his
performance during Hollywood Week should have been more than enough to
send him home.  I think this decision is just another obvious cut that
leads the producers closer to a girl winner in Season 12.  Unless, they
are looking for tv and use the wild card saves for this.

I’m with you. Paul was a big turnoff in Hollywood. Neurotic, insecure, overly-theatrical, and not at all the type who wins American Idol. Jimmy has the kind of cool, laid back, quietly confident vibe that gets votes. Plus, he has a good voice. It’s a shame they cut him because he was among the VERY few who sparked my interest this year.

When do they typically do the wildcard saves — is it after America votes for their top 10, or before we get to that first voting round? I can’t remember from year to year how they do things. Well, I suppose it’s possible Nigel will bring Jimmy back, but I’m not holding my breath.

Wow,  I guess I read it but I forgot entirely that this show was being filmed before a Live audience the nIght Before it was shown.

Usually I read these spoilers thinking that they could just be rumors and possibly wrong here or there.  Having a thousand people from the public in the room makes all of that near impossible.

Oh well.. it was clearly marked spoiler before I clicked.  Even if I would have liked to have an edge of doubt it’s my fault.

  • irockhard

I bet if all the wildcards will be girls.

  • irockhard

I still don’t consider Scotty a WGWG. James can play guitar and even “flipped a song” in one Idol performance. Just because he can do it that doesn’t mean it’s what he is, it doesn’t define him. He’s a rock n roll showman not a WGWG.

  • lovetheusa1776

Jimmy’s being eliminated, for me, is a red flag that shenanigans are going on pretty heavily behind the scenes.  Spotted him as a danger to a girl win as soon as he auditioned.  (Of course, he might have not done well last night, but if he did . . . .)

  • dabney c

Yup, there’s always the possibility that Jimmy blew his Vegas solo. But you’re right: he was most likely seen as a threat to the girls, and so him screwing up would only be a bonus for Nigel. I believe they would have found an excuse to cut him no matter what he did last night.

  • TheOther

How well the last two WGWGs have done post show doesn’t matter.

It matters to their label.  It matters to them.  It ultimately matters to AI.  If contestants aren’t concerned about how well they do after the show, maybe they should go on The Voice or X-Factor and be the next Javier Colon or Jermaine Paul or Melanie Amaro.

  • standtotheright

Just because he can do it that doesn’t mean it’s what he is, it doesn’t define him. He’s a rock n roll showman not a WGWG.

And Cook’s most definitive performances on the show didn’t involve him playing a guitar; it didn’t “define him.” Allen played piano on a few performances, the guitar didn’t “define him” either.

Just make the acronym WG. Period. It gets at the real issue (standard societal privilege and its intersection with talent) and makes the “the show needs a girl to win” meme a lot more clear than debating precisely how many seconds a male contestant can play an instrument on stage before they become part of some pattern.

  • girlygirltoo

I’m hoping there are NO wild cards. I’ve never gotten the point of cutting it to the Top 20 (or Top 10), and then bringing back 2-3 people. IMO It sort of invalidates the whole show up to that point — if they weren’t good enough to make the Top 10 or Top 20 in the first place, why bring them back?

  • justmefornow

And no SAVES! That invalidates the viewers wishes. Besides, those people never win anyway.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/XDQP2Y46M5B3OHOKALDDGDHQCM Leandro

I think Clay Aiken was a wildcard he got pretty far. But you’re right, usually wildcards are kicked out early

  • girlygirltoo

I get why the show would prefer a non “WGWG” to win this season. Even if the 5 previous winners aren’t really all that similar in style to one another, the publi perception is that they are similar, and that you can’t win if you aren’t a “cute” guy who can play a guitar. Also, considering that most of the successful current pop artists are women, I’m sure AI would like to try and have a winner who might be able to be part of that trend.

However, considering that the last 2 male “WGWG” winners have been quite successful post-Idol (to date, anyway), I personally don’t think that having another similar winner in S12 would be a real problem (especially if he goes on to have anywhere near the success that Scotty and Phillip have had). The show certainly doesn’t have a problem pimping their most successful alums, no matter what gender or genre they are.

I don’t mind the idea of the wildcards.  Sometimes there are just really good people who manage to have a really off night during the semi-finals (Matt Giraud anyone?).  Some of my favorite Idols have technically been wildcards and quite often they can outlast at least some of the folks that got in through America’s votes.  My issue is when the judges waste it on people that have no chance of hanging on more than another week (or two).  For instance, Jeremy Rosado last season.  It was kind of obvious the poor guy was likely just going to be making his exit the following week, which he did.  I know someone has to go, but it seemed like a waste of a pick.

The save I can do without, but that is more about trying to make good television than anything else.  Unfortunately, the feel good moment aspect of it has been kind of lost now that we’ve seen it all before, so I think it’s time to retire that trick.

  • TheOther

Whoever wins, guy or girl, will have to sell, sell, sell or they will be gone, gone, gone.

Interscope/Jimmy Iovine is known to move on a lot quicker.  Pia only got one single.  Despite a lot of talk of a CD, that never happened.  Haley got a CD/single.  But when neither of them was able to hit the ground running, the label dropped them.

  • Incipit

I’m hoping there are NO wild cards.

I don’t see why the show needs any Wild Cards this season, girlygirltoo. Like the infamous “Save” – that’s just an over-ride on the viewer’s vote. (that hasn’t even happened yet, won’t happen for a while) With the judges already making the Sudden Death choices instead, they will have five chances each week at their own WildCard pick already…unless they need to second guess their own choices, another WildCard round is redundant, IMO.

  • Incipit

FINALLY Johnny Keyser goes home and not a minute too soon. He had all
the attitude of a star and none of the talent to back it up. BUH bye.

EXACTLY, laahdeedaah. I missed this piece of news, but I am pleased to read it. Didn’t like him last year, liked him even less this year, he performed like the Heir Presumptive, but there was no substance to him. IMO.

  • durbesque

I don’t care if they Save or not.  But, would Jessica be having the career she’s having if she had left early?  I doubt it.  A little glitter falls on the Runner-up.

  • elliegrll

I think that the wild cards are fake drama, but if done right, meaning not like last season, they can make for good television.  A lot of the televised audition rounds, like the group round, are fake, but they are still fun to watch.

    Charlie plays a mean electric.

  • http://twitter.com/raya4 raya

I don’t think there was anything wrong with how the wildcard situation was handled last season, outside as said I think Jeremy was a waste of a pick.  I thought the way it was handled in S11 made for decently good television though.  The other two picks IMO were fine (EVP, DeAndre) and were at least different and distinctive voices for Idol and both managed to outlast some others that had been voted through.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

I don’t mind wildcards and I don’t mind saves. Wildcards give a few more people a second chance, and maybe they can at least make the tour. In a sudden death type situation I think wildcards are key, since its not like the audience got to see them over the course of 3 weeks like in the old format. So some good people who had a bad night might deserve a second chance.

The save doesn’t bother me either. The audience picks the winner it wants regardless. Bottom line is I do think some people go out too early on a fluke and its nice to give the audience a redo. If the audience really wanted that person gone then they will go over the next few weeks anyway.

  • irockhard

They might if they need to fill up broadcasting time. I think they have a week extra or something without a wildcard round.

  • dabney c

Isn’t sudden death pretty much what they did last year with “sing for your life” in Vegas (next to that creepy bubbling river)? The only difference is that last year they made the cuts in a separate episode rather than on the spot after the singing.

  • irockhard

Yeah and I’m not liking Jessica’s chances right now either.

  • justmefornow

Jessica seems to be very popular over seas, not so much maybe here from what I can tell. When her album finally comes out, she may have a really rough time with sales over here, and Jimmy has a quick trigger finger.

I wish her luck. I think she’s going to need. it.

I heard that JDA sings Adele while writhing on the stage and Charlie goes spastic with mic stand. Also, Curtis went last and had to sing his song twice due to camera issues, but the judges only gave feedback on the FIRST performance, so the one that we will see wont be the one that they commented on.

  • irockhard

I heard that JDA sings Adele while writhing on the stage and Charlie goes spastic with mic stand.

LOL, this should be an entertaining episode.

  • http://twitter.com/hotelangel Joe Crisco

and Jimmy will play tie breaker tonight

  • curly_yenta

Quirky?  Taylor and Clay had/have the talent to back up their likability factor.  That’s why Taylor won, and Clay came in 2nd.  Ultimately, you need to be able to sing, entertain, project and get people to care about you.  Otherwise, you lose.

curtis seems like josh ledet 2.0 but i like josh better…
