The Top 20 has not been chosen yet, according to rumor, so we’re going to continue featuring American Idol 10 Top 40 contestants every day, courtesy of Gangreen29 and JoesPlaceBlog.

Today’s hopeful could be the sort of contestant who takes risks on the show. Read on!

James Durbin – James has the same kind of elastic quality to his voice that Adam Lambert and Siobhan Magnus both had that let them stretch higher and higher. At times it seems like he is pushing his voice too hard and it sounds strained, but he definitely has some vocal tricks in his bag. It definitely seems like he would take risks on the show.

I never understood the appeal of Adam Lambert. Siobhan actually has a bigger range, is a much more versatile vocalist, and (unlike Adam) has a nasty rock edge to her voice. She can do jazz, blues, rock, opera, pop, punk, country, etc etc. Siobhan can make her voice sound brassy (Superstition, Suspicious Minds), gritty (Ball and Chain), or stunningly beautiful (Wicked Game, House of the Rising Sun). By contrast, Adam Lambert always has a corny Broadway quality to his voice. His lower register is also surprisingly weak for someone who is supposed to be a vocal powerhouse. I can think of quite a few pop singers who piss all over him from a talent standpoint. Josh Grobin comes to mind.

I was under the impression that this was a thread about the new Season 10 contestant James, who is much more interesting in my mind than any fan war.

James was interesting and pretty good. At the very least he is not half dead. lol But I hope if he gets a chance they won’t try to compare him to Adam. I think that comparison really hurt Siobhan because it was a losing comparison and really not fair. They need to measure their talents against the people they are competing against.

His vocal can’t be compared to Adam Lambert.

He’s much better-looking than Adam, though.
