The Allison Iraheta interview with Lindsey Parker of Yahoo Music.

What’s most awesome about Allison is that she always stays true to herself: Watch her gab in this extremely enjoyable interview about being the anti-Miley, standing up for herself on American Idol, and her role as the baby of the AI 8 cast. This clip is evidence that her mom certainly raised her right.

Allison’s fake pageant wave is awesome. Also, newly-signed to 19R/Jive, she hopes to have her debut album released before the end of the year.

*I’ll have the Danny Gokey video up in a bit.

Video after the JUMP…

Allison totally rocks! LOVED the fake little pagent wave

  • jmds88

    I love this girl.

  • Tess

Allison represents the “type” of teenager that I am familiar with. Respectful but sassy, self-aware but not cockey, out-going but intro-spective, hep (ok, old term but appropo) but not outlandish.

I am so pleased that she is still focusing on her education and is trying to wrap it up before all hell breaks loose for her. She seems to have a good work ethic but isn’t opposed to letting her hair down and acting like a goofy teenager.

I have much love for this young lady, respect for his parents and family for keeping her grounded, am in total awe of her talent and her use of that talent, and am most pleased that she is with-it enough (I detest “shy”) to do so well in her interviews.

Why can’t more kids be like Allison? The world would be a better place.

  • Q3

She is so cool. It just makes me smile to see her!

    “That’s why I didn’t sign with Disney.” :clap_tb:

  • BeckyMD

She is so cute. I love her. I think she will be a beautiful lady when fully grown up.

  • poporange

I won’t write or say “The greatest thing since sliced bread, put her/ his name on the walk of fame or even just 17 like wow yada yada yada” The last part what is a typical 17 year old.?These contestants the majority people who watch don’t fallow them one iota..Put in perspective over seas they knew who MJ. and john wayne was the latter has passed away longer them some idols have been alive..Point ya don’t know them..This goes for all idols the honeymoon is over the snarking will begin….

That being said I thought Allison was pouty face going at times but had some spunk to her.Near the end the girl grew on me and last sing out I actually felt something…Just hope the record company does not turn her into the next someone..I just want Allison…

  • spring2009

I actually feel slightly ill when I see young kids trying to break into the entertainment business. Let’s face it …. it very very rarely turns out well….

  • washpd

I love her. I hope she makes a kick ass rock record. Her voice is amazing and she has personality out the wazoo. I never understood Simon’s complaint about that. She won me over singing-wise the first time I really heard her sing–”Alone” on Group 2 night. And she won me over personality-wise when she said, “It’s not like I’m cutting myself.” Best comeback to a stupid judge’s comment EVER!

  • GeminiDolly

I love this girl. Great voice.

  • nuttin2lose

I really wish I cld like her the way everyone does. I do like some of her music though, the ones i can hear the words. I understand when she removes the braces she wld sound better. She is just too inmature for me to be a fan. And i know she is 17 but so was jordin at that time. I liked her singing on the show and was impressed by the maturity of her voice but the over playfulness during interviews and behind the scenes clips is annoying and has turned me off. Her tweets are even more annoying with the multiple letters she uses and exclaimation marks and the “son” at the end. whatever that means. I wonder what the age range of her fans wld be. I imagine it to be the miley cyrus type fans which is cool .

  • Qcloud9

I’m thrilled for Allison, how exciting for her to get an opportunity like this at seventeen years old!! She’s doing what she loves and she’s really good at it, so this is fabulous!

  • JohnM

What a great kid — such a good head on her shoulders in addition to all that talent.

And you know, it’s funny — it’s not like this video’s sound quality was amazing or anything, but of all the interviews and clips I’ve seen, this is the first one in which her speaking voice really made me sit up and think, ahh, there’s that beautiful husky tone that I love about her singing. I’m surprised that the thought hadn’t crossed my mind before now.

nuttin2lose: I wonder what the age range of her fans wld be. I imagine it to be the miley cyrus type fans which is cool .

I can tell you first-hand that the age range of her fans is huge — 13 to 50 in my house! :biggrin_wp: And not a Miley Cyrus fan in sight here….

  • beckysspam

Yay! Awesome Allison interview! I must say I am SO thrilled she’s not going the Disney tween pop route and we got to hear that from Allison herself (looks like she’s happy about that too, lol). She’s too cute and animated. She seems so genuine. That’s really nice to see. I can’t wait to buy her album and see more from her.

  • lucy

That was so great. Love my little Alli. So nice to see a kid who’s not overprocessed into an overly sweet boring say-what-they-want-me-to-say pageant girl like the teen girls usually are on AI. Her spirit and intelligence and just normalness shine through so much. Congrats to her parents on raising such a great kid.

She looks really beautiful in that interview, too.

And if they’re smart enough not to market her in the teeny-bopper way, maybe she’ll be lucky enough not to have to make some big, dicey transition to “adult performer” later. Maybe she can just be a performer from the beginning, who appeals to a wide age range. Certainly plenty of rockers, especially, have started way young and done that. She can just be Allison all the way through. Hope so.

  • galaxygrrl

I actually feel slightly ill when I see young kids trying to break into the entertainment business. Let’s face it ‘ ¦. it very very rarely turns out well’ ¦.

I think she will be a little different. You read the stories of those kids and they were put in the spot light early on and were seeking fame.

Allison is the child of immigrants, she is a little older than the Brittany’s and Christina’s of the world when fame struck.

She is also knows who she is as an artist and seems a bit more grounded.

    Lets hope so.

  • ppwars

Well, a longed for direct answer to the “Disney/tweeny pop” question. And just the answer we hoped for:”that’s why I’m not signed to Disney!” When Barry Weiss indicated that Jive had tapped her out for a deal in the early weeks of the top 13 “no matter what place she finishes”, I felt then that Alli was to be treated as the fine artist she is. We are in for a real treat as she begins her professional career making the music she loves.

  • sleeptalker

It makes me so happy to see her come this far. Allison was a total underdog, the young spunky rocker girl who refused to give in to the pageantry of Idol.

I think that she’ll do well in the music business…she had to fight her way through the ranks on Idol, whereas young singers like Miley are ushered in the door. It’s clear she’s got a good head on her shoulders…and in my opinion she’s got the perfect mix of P!nk’s tough-girl attitude mixed with Kelly Clarkson’s sing-your-heart-out rock.

Cannot wait for her debut album…wish I could go see her on tour! :(

  • Pam

Love love love this girl! She seems very determined to remain true to herself and I hope she can remain grounded as her career goes forward.

    Pageant wave FTW! :D

  • Dr. Tracey

    Yay to the anti-Miley stuff.
It would have been such a waste for her to go the Disney route, i’m so happy to hear to she isn’t.

  • d. b. cooper

I think it’s hilarious that she says “son” and “homie” so much. It sounds like a hip hop head from around the time she was born, which is bizarre and great. Like just about everything else about her.

For a person so young she has clearly worked very hard for her spot. She doesn’t come from a “teen pop factory” like Disney. She doesn’t have a famous parent. She just has great talent and uncommon self-possession.

    Son!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, and I’m guessing since she was playing the “furniture store” gigs from the age of seven, that lurking in the shadows is a stage parent of some sort. Unless Allison receives major payola radio play from Jive, I suspect that her “musical career” has about the shelf life of a carton of cottage cheese during a brown out. Who knows, though? Perhaps, she will be this years E. Yamin and get exactly that.

When Barry Weiss indicated that Jive had tapped her out for a deal in the early weeks of the top 13 ‘no matter what place she finishes’ ,

Isn’t that wonderful that “the competition” is such a level playing field for all the artists vying for those elusive coveted record contracts. Comments like this from label execs effectively undermines the verisimilitude of this show being anything more than an extended promotional campaign for future Sony/RCA artists.

  • mandabutter

‘personality out the wazoo’ I couldn’t have said it better myself!! :)
Love Allison in interviews…still can’t get over her in the background of Anoop and Matt’s Q&A from -the LA Times, I think. “Hey loser.” HAAA!

  • mandabutter

Allison will make a kick awesome rock record, I can’t wait!!! As someone who has fallen out of love with P!nk, I’m really looking forward to something new. Not that I’m comparing but I do think they will have similar arrangements as well as maybe work with the same producers/writers.
I predict nothing but great things for her in the future. I hope she is given the room to grow on this tour and not be pushed too hard but she seems to absolutely love being on that stage!!!

  • mandabutter

I totally felt a weird kinship with Slezak from EW’s Idolatry b/c of my admiration for The Rocker. I can’t tell u how many times I re-watched “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” and “Crybaby.” Even since the finale. If I could pull off the Fuschia look, I would totally rock that look!

  • ppwars

Comments like this from label execs effectively undermines the verisimilitude of this show being anything more than an extended promotional campaign

What verisimilitude? I followed AI first time this year and saw none. The show is disgusting. My my interest was inadvertently captured by the raw performing talent that I saw in the girl. There was one truth that I understood after watching Allison’s performances thru Motown: she would get a deal, no matter. I explicitly stated so in this blog at the time. The only “vying” is for the guaranteed contract for the winner. No one in their right mind would expect 19 to pass on a contestant who had major commercial potential just because the TV viewers did not cast votes in a preferred manner. No contestant with brains enough to walk into the final 10 would think otherwise, either. It makes no sense.

Her shelf life? Who knows. I assume she is very happy. I assume she will continue as a fulfilled and successful musician whether the current arrangement pans out or not. Your bitter presumptions and comments are just that, so I have a tiny grain of salt here and wonder what kind of bitter experiences you have encountered. Please don’t tell; I’ll just wonder

I detest the show – hope it does fail.

  • d. b. cooper

Isn’t that wonderful that ‘the competition’ is such a level playing field for all the artists vying for those elusive coveted record contracts.

For the performers on the show it is not so much about competition as it is about showcasing their talents. Kris showed a gift for song arrangement and an inventive take on pop music. Adam showed great range and an ability to make moments with his voice and performance skills. Allison showed a powerful, soulful voice and a personality and stage presence completely devoid of bubblegum, something utterly missing from every other artist her age. That is why they got record deals, and why they will get promo.

The record industry may seem strange and frightening but the decisions made tend to be rational. There is a reason these three got signed and, let’s say for instance, Gokey, Rounds, and MacIntyre did not.

  • ppwars

Allison showed a powerful, soulful voice and a personality and stage presence completely devoid of bubblegum,

Hmm…should I ask or just plagiarize. Welll, I’ll ask: CAN I QUOTE YOU!!!! lol…that’s too good – perfectly stated…..LOL

  • d. b. cooper

    CAN I QUOTE YOU!!!!

Spread the word near and far :biggrin_wp:

  • AC

    d. b. cooper- that was a very good analysis! you’re awesome!

anyways, I like Allison but I can see her debut album just doing okay, because she is 17 so it’s kinda hard to market her? I remember Jim Parsons ( I think it was him) do a must list thing for EW and basically described why some might not connect with her. Right now she’s too young to really tackle mature content but her voice is too mature for the younger audience. I see Jive signing her up as an investment because I can totally see her blowing up when she gets a little older. I’m anxious to get her album later this year but I would have also been totally happy if they took their time with this and waited until she was 18 to release it. I know age is just a number but still..

  • matkojapan

I’m a huge Alli fan, but am curious to hear what other fans (and non fans for that matter) would consider a successful debut album sales wise?

Obviously Gold would be Huge! I was thinking at least 300, 000 thousand would have to be sold for her to be considered a success.

I think they need to market her heavily in Latin America and maybe, just MAYBE, a Spanish song on the album would go a long way to help achieve that. hmmmmm..

    Interview was great!

  • lucy

I see Jive signing her up as an investment because I can totally see her blowing up when she gets a little older.

Exactly. She’s got tons of time. Which is why they are willing to take her on — with her prodigious raw talent — when they aren’t willing to take on some of the older ones, despite a lot of talent there, too. That’s sad and crummy for the older ones. But at least Allison gets a shot out of it, is the way I look at it.

  • oceana

Which is why they are willing to take her on ‘” with her prodigious raw talent ‘” when they aren’t willing to take on some of the older ones, despite a lot of talent there, too. That’s sad and crummy for the older ones.

I don’t think her talent is all that raw. She could almost hold her own with anyone even now, and will quickly grow more powerful. She was good with Cindi Lauper, with little time to practice and prepare. A year from now, she would totally hold her own in that situation.

Her talent is indeed prodigious, and can’t be compared to the talent of “the older ones” from this last season. Who among them can compare in terms of singing talent? I’m sorry, but beyond Adam and possibly Kris, I don’t think there is anyone from last season who can even come close. If anything is “sad and crummy” for them it’s that they weren’t born with the kind of talent that Allison has, but that’s life. Few have that kind of luck, if luck it is.

As for marketing, she has the kind of explosive vocal talent that will probably transcend “marketing” ploys. She can probably sing just about anything, and as long as they don’t try to make her into today’s so-called r&b sound, and get her some great songs to sing, she’ll be fine.

There was one truth that I understood after watching Allison’s performances thru Motown: she would get a deal, no matter.

I felt the same way. There is no way record producers didn’t see her talent, even if american idol voters didn’t necessarily get it. I’m just glad she stayed around long enough for more and more voters to open their eyes and to give her long enough to get some of the public recognition she deserves, which will help her sell her first cd.

This isn’t like marketing someone who can barely sing. This is like marketing a rare talent, a Celine or a Janis Joplin or Patsy Cline. The usual rules don’t apply. I just hope that Jive doesn’t screw it up. Even if they do, she will survive a so-so first cd, as did Kelly, and her talent will guarantee her a second, third, and fourth.
