Season 8 American Idol alum, Allison Iraheta,  performed two new songs at the LA Music Academy after a voice clinic on June 6, 2012.

The new songs are “Nothing at All” and “Guns in Our Hands”.

My favorite of the two is “Nothing at All”, but if I’m being perfectly honest, I find my self gravitating to the covers in her set.  I love Allison’s voice, but I think she needs better songs to showcase her talent.

Nevertheless, it’s great to hear Allison sing again. Her talent deserves a platform STAT.

Check out the covers she performed, including  Big Empty, by Stone Temple Pilots, Glory Box by Portishead, Darling Nikki, by Prince and High and Dry, by Radiohead.

I’m assuming she doesn’t have a label deal now? That’s a shame. I like her alto tone. She’s got a lot of power to her voice which I like as well.
If she had been on an Indie with 100+ sales, like James, she might still be signed.
    Too bad.
If she was dropped from a major with those sales,I really fear for Kris and Haley. They probably won’t even make 100k.

If you haven’t bought her album, do it! You won’t regret it – one of the best Idol albums, if you ask me…

Everybody thought she was going to be 2nd (or 1st), getting to the finale with Adam Labert or Kris Allen.

Seriously? One of the best idol albums?

Alison has an awesome voice but I never found her believable as a rocker, apparently neither did Jive even though I always thought Jive wasn’t a good fit for her. I just can’t see this girl competing with the likes of Amy Lee, Taylor Momsen or Izzy Hale, and Taylor is about her age too. Alison needs to do what James is doing, start at the bottom in the trenches, playing in sleazy dive bars if she’s serious about a career in rock and for a rock label to consider her. If she can’t handle that then she’s not cut out for business.

Seems like I missed a lot that season. lol
I didn’t watch AI9 either, but from what I can tell I didn’t miss too much.
I wasn’t going to watch AI1O either, but then saw/heard James and I was hooked again. lol

    I’ll check out her album.

She’s not trying to be a rocker and she has played in many bars as well, mostly acoustic sets that showcase her voice. She is in no way attempting to be Amy Lee or Taylor Momsen.

Well that’s news to me considering that her fans were toting her as a rocker when she was on the show.

Allison finished 4th in Season 8. She was a goofy 16 year old kid with a dynamite voice and rock leanings. At the time Pink was her favorite artist. She was signed with Jive as a developing artist. They pushed her to be poppy and she put out one album that never really went anywhere. ‘Scars’ was my favorite song from the album.

I’m happy to see how she has matured. Jazz blues is perfect for her and maybe we will see a resurgence of that type of music. Well, I can dream.

I wish the sound was louder on the interview. I am having a terrible time trying to listen to it and I’m very interested. Maybe someone can do a transcript.

That was four years ago though, people change and based on her new music and focus, rock isn’t it.

I agree with you here – I’m starting to think that anyone who doesn’t finish in at least 2nd place on Idol should sign with an independent label right off the bat.  They seem to get just as much promo on a small label, and the pressure is off to make the huge sales or get dropped.

I fear for Haley also.  No matter how many times someone tells me Interscope sees her as a brand new, developing artist and doesn’t expect big sales from her, I just don’t believe it.  I guess because it would be the first time in history for a major label to treat an Idol like that.  Hopefully Interscope is different, but I’ll believe it when I see it.

But back to Allison - I really like her voice and style too and wish her much success going forward.

Allison was my favorite from Season 8, I was so impressed with the smoky quality of her voice and thought she had a lot of poise for a 16-year-old (about 8 years younger than the average age for the top 10 that season).  She competed well against a lot of experienced people.  She’s still only 20, hard to believe.

When she’s singing hard rock she’s a hot mess. When she’s singing these bluesy ballads she’s rad! She kinda reminds me Jordis Unga in that department.

    Sometimes I can’t understand a single word but I don’t care. It’s good anyway!
