Adam Lambert sat down with Ellen Degeneres on her talk show, airing today, to talk about his controversial performance on the AMA’s.

‘It was maybe a little too far,’ Adam said, ‘I think in hindsight I look back on it and I go, ‘OK, maybe that wasn’t the best first impression to make again, the first second impression.’ I mean, I had fun up there, I had a good time, my dancers had fun and the band had fun.”

‘I respect people and feel like people walked away from that feeling disrespected. I would never intend to disrespect anybody. So that was not my intention.’

Later in the show, Adam performed “Whataya Want From Me”, and it was pretty effin fantastic.

This is the best performance of WWFM so far — just fantastic. And a shoutout to the band — Adam choose his bandmates quite wisely — they sound terrific.

  • http://www.dallascowboys.com GeminiDolly

Man, I get sad when he sings this song now :(

  • mayang

adam and d band luks good together. their personalities really jibe, u can sense it even in videos. just love to see the vulnerable adam on ellen.

when ellen said that he does not only have a beautiful voice he also is avery beautiful person i think adam wud like to cry. he seems so touched.. he seems so vulnerable during the interview but i can sense the sympathy and love from ellen. their nice pipol.

Man, I get sad when he sings this song now

Actually, I get happy . . the lyrics couldn’t be better for him right now and they lend themselves to such a personal interpretation even though he didn’t write them.

  • jumpstart

    Beautiful song … awesome performance.

  • http://www.irish-wolfhounds.com Buderschnookie

Great band, great performance, great HUG, great interview.
    Adam did everything right.

  • Chicagolaw

Love the performance, and love the big hug after.

ETA—There couldn’t be a more perfect song for the moment than this one. Suddenly the lyrics have so much more meaning.

  • saga

They just announced on AO that Adam will be performing on Jimmy Kimmel and Conan in the next coupla weeks.

That’s just performing right? Like on Letterman?

  • sr4mjc

Cute little bow by Tommy at the end. I wish the band could be interviewed eventually. Twitter party?

  • soverymel

That’s just performing right? Like on Letterman?

The Kimmel appearance is listed as the outdoor concert, so no interview there. Probably the same on Conan, although there’s no way to know for sure really.

  • suebrody

Monte has already begun having Twitter parties. :)

I thought the interview was too short, but Ellen as always was supportive. And the performance of WWFM was beautiful and heartfelt. This song could not have more relevance now I get chocked up every time I hear it. Adam is a special person and performer. And his band: perfection. They are all on Twitter on, even Lisa (keyboardist). AO says he’ll be on Kimmel and Conan–hopefully an interview with Jimmy!

  • dhunken

This was an amazing performance and I agree perfect band for him. The vibe they all exude mesh well together. This song grows on me the more he sings it. Like it live better

  • windmills

Much better than the Letterman performance. The track is still distracting though. I know Adam said that reverb and space and stuff sound more pleasing to most people but it’s easier for me to pay attention when it’s just his voice raw. He nailed the end of the song though.

What a beautiful hug at the end.

This is the perfect song for him to be singing now.

  • adamisthemanfan

He totally fucking KILLED it in the best of ways :) Vocal was flawless
Am so over the AMA bullcrap… I love Ellen, shes so cool…I just wish the interview would have been more lighthearted though :/
in other news hes gonna be on other talk shows per his website. yay :)

  • becausehelives

That was the most beautiful thing ever. his eyes..god his eyes and the singing. so glad we are back to the singing.

  • koshka

Awwwww everyone needs a good hug. :)

    They sounded great!

  • DLee

OMG, that was so good. It was much easier to watch knowing ahead of time that there was no “train wreck”. I got a little teary on “I’m a freak” I thought he seemed extra vulnerable there. I think Ellen gave him an extra long hug there at the end. Loved it.

  • SpenserJ

Man, that was a pretty kickin’ performance. Probably the best one of WWFM so far. And, I have to say, that warm hug at the end? Even warmed my cold dead heart a little LOL.

The Kimmel appearance is listed as the outdoor concert, so no interview there. Probably the same on Conan, although there’s no way to know for sure really.

I don’t recall if Jimmy ever talks to the acts that perform on the outdoor stage. I’m sure I’ve seen it before – but I have no recollection whastoever (that is not unusual for me!).

Conan usually does the same thing Letterman does – walk over and shake the guy’s hand/say “the cd’s available everywhere” thing for a minute.

All bets are off though if Adam can figure out a way to do something else controversial in the next week. Then, one of those guys might actually be interested in talking to him LOL.

  • jericho

    it was pretty effin fantastic.

I am constantly amazed at how good he and his band truly are. Wow.

  • Glambert4321

Man, he looks so effing hot in that jacket and tie. Wow. how can one person be so goregeous. And the way he sang this song — could listen to it a million times. Go Adam!!

  • adamisthemanfan

man, even ellen seems all smitten by him (that hug lasted a while LOL)…he may be gay but hes still a fucking girl magnet and I loved that jacket with the tie he looked really cute :)

  • mayang

dat hug in the ned, it made me cry.,.. i love adam…

  • mmb

I guess the kimmel booking (together with BW and potential View)answers the question of whether adam is “banned” from abc. The answer is no.

  • DLee

Did someone post earlier that the President would be speaking during Ellen today? Is that true?

  • http://www.dallascowboys.com GeminiDolly

On a very shallow note, my goodness hes so good looking.

  • unidentified

I am really liking this song sung live. I like Adam, but not gaga over him. I bought his CD when it was on sale at Amazon. I didn’t much care for it on the CD. But he is so pretty to look at and I enjoy watching him perform. He was really good on Ellen this morning.

  • adamlover

i also felt teary eyed from the interview and performance. he is amazing and i think everyone that meets him is definitely smitten by him. maybe thats why we feel the way we do, he just gets into our hearts!

  • bridgette12

I can’t believe what an unbelievable band he has. They all look so different, but blend together so well. Adam and the band are so great together. I wonder if they are going to pick a band name like David Cook’s band .

  • LisaE

Man, I get sad when he sings this song now

Me too. And I hate everyone who made the song so meaningful.

so glad we are back to the singing.

I’m glad we’re back to talking about the music, but if he stops pushing the boundaries and being his sexy-ass self because of certain fans, I will be incredibly upset. I want to see him perform FYE again in the future. Hopefully on tour we get a re-hash of his AMA performance.

  • wordnerdarchie

Overall, a very good performance. I’ve got to hand it to him for coming through after a very tough week. But …

I still don’t like his audible gasps in his phrasings. That has bothered me from the beginning. (Yeah, I know, many of you love that, but I don’t.)

  • suebrody

That hug at the end between Ellen and Adam–and it wasn’t a short one, either–makes me want to cry. I hope he gets to come back on to talk about music and fun things and not the AMAs and GMA. He gets better and better every time he sings this song.

He looked great, he sounded great, the band sounded great; totally awesomeness all the way around.

  • unique28v

Wow… that was freakin fantastic!! He put so much emotion in that song. He needs to take that song on the road and go!

  • dhunken

One other thing is Adam enunciates so well when he sings. I really l love that about him. His phrasing is impeccable. I think one reason I like this performance better then the Early Show and Letterman is that his performance today had tons of emotion and I could feel it.

  • TwigLA

That was lovely. This is the Adam I like. The rest, not so much.

  • http://mjsbigblog.com honowoowoo

THANK YOU MJ!! Bravo Adam! geez louise, was he GORGEOUS or WHAT?? It’s been raining here in beautiful Hawaii, and what a way to BRIGHTEN up my morning!! Woo Hoo! Love Ellen!!

    mj, MAHALO!!

  • SpenserJ

Did someone post earlier that the President would be speaking during Ellen today? Is that true?

That was our posters who live in Hawaii. When the president comes on live in what is EST “primetime”, for them it actually pre-empts their daytime shows.

President Obama comes on tonight 8 pm EST – so no worries for us mainlanders (except for how it might effect SYTYCD tonight!).

I hope he gets to come back on to talk about music and fun things and not the AMAs and GMA. He gets better and better every time he sings this song.

For me, these great live performances are enough, even when he doesn’t get to talk. That’s the best way to rebound from any kind of career “set-back” – to come out and show the world what you can DO. Walk on stage and just effin throw it down.

  • dhunken

I still don’t like his audible gasps in his phrasings. That has bothered me from the beginning. (Yeah, I know, many of you love that, but I don’t.)

I think that is a style choice as I have read people post that on the DDD site. I think we know he doesn’t have to do it. I just think he likes the dramatics of it. But I understand how it can be off putting to some.

  • smellycat

So emotional and just beautiful. There is no male pop star atm that sings like this. Adam is filling a void.

My trip to the Ellen show -

I am exhausted, we drove until the wee hours of the morning to get home but it was all worth it. We arrived at WB and they gather you in this area in the parking garage. Ugh ‘“ they just told me they have to scan for virus so I will make this quicker, —- we were VIP because we work for FOX and went into a separate area, Michael from affiliate relations came out to find us and myself and the 3 other people that went with us were given Ellen t shirts and note pads and we were the only ones, it was so cool! A lady was sitting by us and my friend asked if she was Adams mom, she looked just like her! After sitting out there and having people perform ‘“ burp the alphabet, sing, etc ‘“ they then escorted us into this hall and we sat for a bit waiting to get in. The guy that preps everybody before the show came out to pump everyone up and several people asked who the guest was ‘“ WE knew and if they had just been quiet they could have heard him rehearsing What Do You Want From Me in the background, this lady across from me and I were quietly screaming and saying be quiet so we can hear, she said she goes on your site, her name is Maggie and her user name is outlambish girl or something like that. Then we went into the rif raff room for a bit then they escorted the Vip’s in, we went in last so we were sad, at first! Then they took us up to the second row from the front on the side that Adam would be performing, screammmm!!! The lady that looked like Adams mother sat next to us and then as we were sitting there they escorted Adams real mom out and she sat RIGHT BEHIND ME, I turned to her and said I love your son and she said thanks and gave me a big smile, she is very sweet but I didn’t want to bug her so I left her alone but damn did I want to ask her some questions and talk to her!!! So, gosh, Marisa comes out then Victor did a wonderful solo right in front of me then Karen, I didn’t like hers as much but they were both very sweet ‘“ Victor was awesome though and to see him within arms length do all that is something to see! Then ADAM and I don’t remember exactly what was said but he was charming funny and sweet, said his dad thinks he should apologize to some for the AMA’s and he said he did use bad judgement, not thinking that this was the first time the public would see him after AI and a lot for the first time, Ellen brought up how wrong she thought ABC was and how wrong it was that they are now bringing on Chris Brown instead of him, Adam was very gracious and said he thinks if Chris takes care of his problem and learns from it, he deserves a second chance, that everyone does but he understands why ABC did that, he did things that were not rehearshed and in hindsight really shouldn’t have done them, Ellen was sad and said I hope that it doesn’t hurt you and that you are ok because I think you are amazing, or something to that effect. Then a guy singing backwards came on ‘“ dance dance dance throughout the whole show ‘“seriously non stop and I did it ‘“ didn’t think I could but was so excited ‘“ he sang WDYWFM and it was beautiful and wonderful and just everything, he looked at me the whole time, noooo, but I pretended he did – he did look my way the whole time but he was singing to his mother behind me, sooooo sweet – we stood up thoughout and sang with him and just wow. When he was done I turned to his mom and told him how amazing he was and she smiled and nodded and then was escorted back stage and it was over ‘“ darn it , it went way too fast

Gee–this keeping-up-with-the-idols is really cutting into my work day.

Re: the interview–he really came around, eh? Really different tune from a week ago.

  • unique28v

You can tell Ellen genuinely likes Adam from that hug at the end.

  • ptslittlecomment

Totally Off Topic but the View women just asked Rod Stewart what he thought of what Adam did was OTT . He said he knew Adam from AI but didn’t watch the performances. When they explained what happened on the AMA’s he said “There’s nothing wrong with that , its rock and roll. ” (Whoopee seemed to agree) Then he went on to say what some of his co-horts did in “their day”. It was a quick moment, but it made me happy to hear it.

  • cookbunny

Wow, the further we get from the AMAs the more it’s becoming clear to me…

Having the controversial performance turned out to be a BRILLIANT PR move. Not everyone saw the show, just videos and stills after. But most of all it got Adam’s name OUT THERE. Now when he’s on Ellen, Conan, Letterman, etc. people tune in and get what I frankly think is the stronger single and better performance.

And we thought they didn’t know what they were doing.

(meanwhile…my poor baby Kris :( …maybe he would have been better off losing AI and signing with an indie label. Le sigh…)

  • saga

All bets are off though if Adam can figure out a way to do something else controversial in the next week. Then, one of those guys might actually be interested in talking to him LOL.

Yeah, he’s been a good boy a whole week now…

  • mitchellvii

Seriously, if he had sung this at the AMA’s just like that, I think he would have sold 400,000 albums his first week. Amazing vocal. Awesome lyrics. Gives me chills.

  • sr4mjc

    Did he dance with Ellen?

  • fusion8

    Great song, great performance

Pink have really matured as a songwriter. i gather that she wrote this song when she and Carey have broken up.

good that she didnt record it. for Adam now seems to have a hit on his hands.

  • AdamSeason

Beautiful person and what a perfect song, Adam sang it with such meaning and I loved the long hug at the end..

  • lucy

(meanwhile’ ¦my poor baby Kris :( ‘ ¦maybe he would have been better off losing AI and signing with an indie label. Le sigh’ ¦)

I don’t think so. He’s still getting much more exposure and name recognition this way than he would have otherwise. And that’ll help him down the line to sustain a career in the music business, no matter which way he ends up going with that career, indie or whatever.

Honestly, most of the former Idol finalists are just *fine* and are earning a living doing their music and the Idol thing helps them in the long run, even if some of them get unjustly smeared for a while because they don’t move enough product or they have ugly teeth or whatever. Kris is a talented, smart, skilled, likable guy, and he’ll be just fine. Not to worry.

  • IdolThoughts

This was an awesome way to start my morning. I got teary eyed when Ellen gave him that meaningful long hug. She totally connects with him and adores him. That was awesome. I hope Adam keeps his chin up and takes enough moments to feel all of the love and support from his peers and fans. We cannot ask for more from him. I mean…he is truly a person who learns from his mistakes and is very self aware and conscious of his place in the scheme of things. I love that bit about people feeling disrespected. He is really getting to the heart of things and learning. Gotta love that. Gotta love Adam.

  • abbysee

Okay, I’ve got a little fucking tear running down my face…..shit.

Great interview. I am glad he mentioned it was more a matter of taste than obscenity because really that it what I got out of that performance on the AMA’s which was loaded with obscenity. He went too far, especially for people for whom it was a first look. I am glad that he will be having the opportunities to make people take a second look as he is just too damn talented to be overlooked for one silly performance.

The other thing that his detractors should note that he mentioned is that is was a progression. For those of us who watched him defile and/or impregnate the mic stand in cities all around America, we at least were aware of sexually charged Adam, many viewers were not, hence the disconnect. I get it, he got it, and I hope we will all move forward. The performance at the AMA’s will not define him.

I must say I love Ellen, she’s a mensch. I loved the hug after the performance which was so kick ass and poignant at the same time. This guy is just so talented in so many ways I really don’t think it’s hyperbole to say he is one of the most talented performers I have ever seen, period, not just from idol. He can sing, he’s personable, he has a point of view, which he articulates like almost nobody else I’ve ever come across. He’s sexy, and the boy next door at the same time.

I just adore him, and I am glad to see that he will be okay. I must admit the AMA’s had me worried for him for about a day, lol. I am glad he will be doing the talk show rounds as that will keep his cd selling, so far it seems to be doing quite well. Fingers crossed, knock on wood, etc. etc.

Truly someone could have scripted this story arc, from the build up to the AMA’s and FYE, to the fallout, media storm and now WDYWFM. Genius!

  • smellycat

Suzanne: Cut him some slack. He’s learning. Have you ever done something other people criticized? I bet it wasn’t in front of millions of people and every news station. He is handling himself quite well under all the hoopla.

And Adam is gorgeous in person and big and tall and Ellen is so tiny, tinier than she looks on TV – fun times

I think Ellen is being motherly/big sisterly to him. She is a lesbian after all and has no intention of switiching.

This is an area Ellen pioneered on television, so she has first hand experience in the backlash. We’ve come a long way as a nation when ‘Ellen’ came out on her show about 10 years ago. Ironically, ‘Ellen’ the sitcom was on ABC.

    From the LA Times, 1998

HOLLYWOOD – In an anticipated move that has nevertheless disappointed some gay-rights activists, ABC has canceled “Ellen,” a program that became a national bellwether for public acceptance of homosexuals as prime-time television’s first series featuring an openly gay lead character.

Producers of the show and its star, Ellen DeGeneres, learned of the decision late Wednesday.

…”We all knew it was coming,” said executive producer Tim Doyle. “I just thought the timing was weird, because they had always told us they wouldn’t make a decision until the schedule (for next season) was set in May.”

The “coming out” of the character played by DeGeneres spurred widespread public debate when broadcast a year ago, while leading to renewed charges that the entertainment industry doesn’t reflect traditional values.

The Southern Baptist Convention cited the program and “gay-friendly” policies of the Walt Disney Co. – which produces “Ellen” and owns ABC – in urging members last year to boycott the company.

Despite the controversy surrounding “Ellen,” Disney and ABC officials have consistently stressed that the comedy’s future hinged on its ratings, not political considerations….

    http://community.seattletimes.nwsource.com/archive/?date=19980424&slug=2746898

Ellen, like Adam, was part of the long-running story of Disney being declared too pro-gay, over and over again, by Christian conservative activists, in my opinion.

  • adamisthemanfan

I think Ellen is being motherly/big sisterly to him. She is a lesbian after all and has no intention of switiching.

For sure, I was just j/k because she even said he was good looking.
You dont have to feel sexually attracted to someone in order to recognize that they are attractive.
She is more drawn to him because of his talent and good nature as are many ppl.

  • tierbee

Wow, that was a great performance – will have to forward that to my sister, she’s a big Adam fan but was at work so missed it.

I’m glad we’re back to talking about the music, but if he stops pushing the boundaries and being his sexy-ass self because of certain fans, I will be incredibly upset.

He’s learning to play the game, that’s all. I’m sure he’ll be pushing plenty of boundaries. He doesn’t strike me as a guy who will be happy to just play it safe.

  • aa618892

Fantastic performance and just lovely interview. Ellen is now officially my favorite talk show host of all time. And Adam, what a gorgeous hunk of man he is! Nice to see him in brown. Whooo!

  • tierbee

And BTW, I don’t mean game cynically, really, but I think that plays back to what I saw as a missed opportunity with the AMAs to really blow up and sell a ton of albums (he may anyway), it just went a little too far. I think he’s learning as he goes, with a big spotlight on him, and it has to be unnerving.

  • sidewalkstory

Adam now knows he has to play it safe for TV. But just imaging all that bottled up sexuality stored up for the tour. I can’t wait. Bring it Adam!

  • Suzanne

Suzanne: Cut him some slack. He’s learning. Have you ever done something other people criticized? I bet it wasn’t in front of millions of people and every news station. He is handling himself quite well under all the hoopla.

Gee. I didn’t even criticize him very much. Ouch.

  • BestAI

Great interview (when has Adam ever given a bad one?). You can tell Ellen really loves him — the big, long hug at the end is indicative of that. Now she is one of us — thinking Adam is really beautiful in person. Or was she talking on the inside. Well, whatever, he is beautiful on the inside and out. Well, effin gorgeous is more like it. I’m also glad Ellen stressed how incredibly talented Adam is.

I love Adam’s band in every way. They are all top-notch musicians individually, with impressive credentials. I can’t believe how tight they are after being together less than a month. Even tho they all have a different look, they somehow mesh together. They dress edgy, but very classy, like Adam. This is a very well put together band musically and aesthetically.

The performance speaks for itself. Nuff said.

  • SpenserJ

Ellen, like Adam, was part of the long-running story of Disney being declared too pro-gay, over and over again, by Christian conservative activists, in my opinion.

I loved Ellen’s sitcom. She always has been very adept at bringing the funny. Her road, after coming out, was a long and difficult one. She’s in a very unique position to be empathetic to Adam’s situation, and that really showed in the way she treated him.

  • ScorpioBSB

I still don’t like his audible gasps in his phrasings.

I thought the little gasp was very dramatic, almost like the emotion of the song took his breath away. Very powerful IMO.

  • JazzRocks

Later in the show, Adam performed ‘Whataya Want From Me’ , and it was pretty effin fantastic.

    This says it all.

Best performance so far of WWFM.

  • mitchellvii

Adams’ ONLY mistake in the AMA performance (and the part for which he owes an apology to ABC) was that his performance was so much racier than the rehearsal. I doubt ABC would have green-lighted the man-kiss had they known it was coming and definitely not the BJ.

That being said, ABC likely DID know about the JJ crotch grab and had no issue with it.

Hey, Mozart was no angel either and pissed off lots of people. I don’t think Prince ever won an Eagle Scout badge either.

Well I think he’s awfully sexy being like this. You don’t have to make out with keyboardists or mic-stands to be sexy….and honestly certain fans that encourage that make me upset. So it’s a double-edged sword.

  • Mary102

OMG – I love his interviews! Ahh – that was so great with Ellen, he just has such a great rapport with her! And he’s looking super hot there too!

Ok, brb – got to watch the performance now!

  • PattyH

Wow, excellent performance! Can’t wait to see it on my TV!

  • Mary102

Very emotional performance by Adam – that’s another thing I love about this song – it lets him really let loose with the emotional lyrics and message. You can tell how personal it is to him when he sings it.

Oh, and loved loved loved the hug between him and Ellen at the end! Awww!

  • FifthHouseSun

Wow, excellent performance! Can’t wait to see it on my TV!

Lucky to have 9:00AM Ellen, and it’s fabulous on TV. Had a very “Adam on AI” wow that man can really sing enchantment.

  • http://kristentheyellowlab.blogspot.com/ Zsus

Wow! I’m home from the dentist, all numbed up and semi-miserable, and this just helped ease some of the pain.

Lovely interview. Ellen really loves him. And you could tell that she wanted to use her show to help him get past the hoopla, and to help people see that he’s not some douche who think she can do whatever the hell he wants.

The performance was incredible. I can’t believe how much I’ve come to love that song.

  • suebrody

I have now watched the performance 10x (on YT). Wait till I get home and watch it on the bigger set. That hug from Ellen was so heartfelt.

    *snif*

Adam was supposed to be on LKL a while ago, with Kathy Griffith hosting. But that was the week MJ died, and it never aired. I know this is going to be about the AMAs, etc., but I dearly hope there is something about music! And it doesn’t look like he is going to talk to Kimmel, b/c it is performed on an outdoor stage, but I wish he would. They would have amazing chemistry, I bet. Waiting for Leno (clearly Leno is a fan) and The Colbert Report (*that* could be a fun interview).

Adam is getting a lot of love today on Twitter, and I think this is a good time for him to be receiving it. And yay for the adds! I think WWFM is a great radio-friendly song.

ETA: As you know, sumidol, I am very jealous. Glad you had such a good time at the taping and maybe got to meet the band.

  • FifthHouseSun

When they explained what happened on the AMA’s he said ‘There’s nothing wrong with that , its rock and roll. ‘

Loved that. Voice of experience and historical perspective from Rod Stewart.

  • CariA

Sorry Suzanne. I didn’t mean to sound harsh like that!! ;)

  • clearone

The Colbert Report (*that* could be a fun interview).

    ????? Is this for real?

  • mitchellvii

Just think of the last week as MAKEUP SEX for Adam.

  • Mary102

Truly someone could have scripted this story arc, from the build up to the AMA’s and FYE, to the fallout, media storm and now WDYWFM. Genius!

Great post, abbysee! ITA! What a story it’s been since day one, but especially dramatic this last week!

  • Layla

Eff me is he not sexy??!!! His outfit was just gorgeous!.

This song should be released NOW as a single….it is really that good.

  • FancyNancy

Finally…. he is taking responsibility and realizes he did perhaps make an error in judgment. I want him to be successful based on his amazing voice and not the theatrics.

  • Mary102

The Colbert Report (*that* could be a fun interview).

    ????? Is this for real?

I don’t think so – not yet at least ;-) But I hope so! That would be awesome!

  • http://www.myspace.com/gundomom CarieB

Loved both the interview and performance. I totally dig that song, and now I love it even more. I may have to indulge my kids with Kiis FM in the car more since they’re playing WWFM heavily.

  • emmuzka

I loved the performance, but I think that this proves FYE to be out of the television and promotion circles now permanently. Which forebodes bad things to it ever reaching top 40 radio play… I’m kinda waiting for the next single already, and I’m sure Adam’s people are eager to throw different things out in a hope that even one sticks as a top 40 super hit. The album cover sticker says strongly on behalf on “Music Again” and “Sure Fire Winners”, but in the interview Adam hints it could be “If I Had you”, which would, in my opinion, be much better!

  • Suzanne

Sorry Suzanne. I didn’t mean to sound harsh like that!!

Oh–pish tosh. Nice of you to get back on to say that.

It was a really articulate interview. And Ellen and Adam seem so comforable with each other. Maybe they’ll hang out over the holidays. And Ellen will have a cool cocktail party. And . . . Okay–must get a life.

  • Bowie1

Great performance and interview. It’s good he’s doing these TV appearances so people can hear his fantastic voice
and see his lovable and fun personality! And, ofcourse, his ‘good looks’ don’t hurt either! lol

It’s nice that his Mom and family have been there to support him through some bumps in the road’. I wonder what her job is exactly for Adam?

Looking forward to the O’Brien and Kimmel performances. Don’t know what to think about the possible ‘View” appearance?! Then there is good ole’ Larry King. And isn’t Adam suppose to sing ‘The National Anthem’ at a Spielberg function? Oh!…and the Jingle Ball thing!

    Yeah…things are looking good!!

  • Suzanne

he is pretty sexy, but everytime I get turned on by a gay guy, it gets me down.

Isn’t it a single now? I thought I read the other day that it was going for ads either this week or last week.

    Isn’t it a single now?

Every track of every album on iTunes is a defacto single. Because people can dl it “singly”.

So, yes, people can go buy WWFM, singly.

But it’s also on radio now as well.

  • suebrody

    No, I was speculating about Colbert… ;)

Apparently, some of the interview was not shown (sumidol, can you confirm?), including a portion where he talked about Chris Brown. I hope it will show up on Ellen’s website.

There are rumors that Adam will be on The View in the near future. I hope so!

  • Summer

    Awesome performance!
I like how he’s starting to interact more with the band on stage- Near the end of the song he walked back to where the band was, faced Monte, then kind of leaned back -to-back into Tommy, then came up front again.

I do wish they had spent a minute or two talking about his album- I know she gave it to the audience, but I wish she had held up the cd a little more prominently to the camera, and let Adam talk about it for a minute or two.
    Cannot wait for the tour!!!!

  • iluvai

That was such a great interview, but seriously that performance almost made me cry. Adam is sooooo good. So much emotion. He’s just beautiful inside and out.

  • 4evrmomof4
  • raka

Heh theres no doubt in my mind hes going to be making out with mic stands on tour and later performances too. And thank god for that :)

  • elw

    OMG…..he’s unbelievable!

  • Andysgirl

Adam and Ellen talk as if they are old friends already! It is heartwarming to watch. I floved this performance. GO ADAM!!

    Rod Stewart I love you.

WWFM is pretty officially the “new single” now. All sorts of conjecture on our part about what the real deal was with FYE – was it meant to be the first single, was it just meant to be performed for the AMAs, etc. A big mystery for now, but it was never heavily PUSHED to radio, and WWFM seems a better fit, not to mention, radio is really liking it early on.

  • lucy

I love IIHY. I hope they pick that one. It’s very catchy (MA doesn’t work that well live, as Adam said in his interview w/ Slezak–it’s too vocally layered). I could see Fever, since it’s written by GaGa and sort of has that feel, or Strut, but I like IIHY better.

    December 17, 2009: Jimmy Kimmel Live ‘“ Outdoor Stage Concert ABC-TV 12:05AM ET/11:05PM CT

Yes! I’m happy to see some more live performances lined up in December! Isn’t Kimmel on ABC? That’s a good sign.

Great interview with Ellen! Wonderful performance! The hug was sweet! And he look beautiful!

  • Tess

Alrighty then…I’m eating crow after looking at the media Adds. Two areas that I would have been “amazed” if Adam was added have added him: Boise, Id and Salt Lake City, Ut. Absolutely freakin amazing! There is hope rising anew….now I’ll watch to see if it spins, but one little step at a time.

  • lucy

WWFM now has seven stations in six of the top 20 U.S. markets, plus a station in Canada’s # 1 market, Toronto.

And the good news is that everybody who added the song *last* week has at least given it some spins, so that suggests history’s on the side of people not just adding it but also giving it at least moderate play ….

All that is pretty promising, to me.

  • Ptnyc34

I think Ellen is being motherly/big sisterly to him. She is a lesbian after all and has no intention of switiching.

No way, seriously?? Well, thanks for the hot tip! As if anyone actually thought she intended to switch. LMAO! That’s hilarious. I think it’s obvious she recognizes the fact that he’s a very unique and talented guy and she has no intention of switching her opinion based on one AMA performance. And I totally agree with her. The back lash from ABC was completely unwarranted. Especially when you consider the fact that ABC normally broadcasts Brothers & Sisters on Sunday at 10pm, a show which features a gay male character and guy on guy action! This was a great interview and Adam sounded terrific.

  • saga

MA doesn’t work that well live, as Adam said in his interview w/ Slezak’“it’s too vocally layered

Count me in as someone who didn’t like MA on the album AT ALL but live, hey, it was just awesome! I loved the attitude and how much he seemed to enjoy that song. And betterer is such a great word. I want to see this song again and agin and again…

“”Apparently, some of the interview was not shown (sumidol, can you confirm?), including a portion where he talked about Chris Brown. I hope it will show up on Ellen’s website.”"

He did talk about Chris Brown with Ellen, Ellen brought it up and thought it was wrong that ABC took Adam off and put Chris on but Adam said he thinks that everyone deserves a second chance, even Chris if he takes steps to get better and follows through and then Ellen said, yes i agree, you are right everyone deserves a second chance but I disagree with them taking you off – not the exact wording but that is the jist of it. It was a long interview with him, maybe it couldnt all fit

  • Mary102

Count me in as someone who didn’t like MA on the album AT ALL but live, hey, it was just awesome! I loved the attitude and how much he seemed to enjoy that some. And betterer is such a great word. I want to see this song again and agin and again’ ¦

Yes, ITA! I didn’t like MA as much at first on the album (though saying I don’t like a song as much on Adam’s album is sorta like saying I don’t like cupcakes as much as cake, lol). And I wasn’t sure how it would come across live on the Early Show. But I LOVED that performance of it, thought it sounded amazing, and thought it interesting that the song really works with the more stripped down (by default) instrumentation it has when performed live. It doesn’t really need the effects to just really really work. And his vocals (even without the many layers!) sounded great too!

  • Destry

SALT LAKE!!! SuWEEEEEEEET!!!! My city added him! (he’s got some crazy fans over here, I have to say…)

  • saga

Let’s hope for some spins too, not just adds!

  • tls62

I love when they first sit down, Ellen just stares at Adam for a good 4-5 seconds. I know exactly how she feels. Seeing him up close on tour was a feeling I will never forget….you literally just have to stare at him.

Little did Adam know months ago when he first laid his eyes on this song from P!nk how it would eventually be weaved into his life at this moment. He’s an intelligent guy…he’ll figure this whole “instant fame” crap out and be stronger in the long run for it.

I can’t get over how great his band fits together. I hope this is the band he’ll use on tour….they all look and sound great together.

  • Organic

Don’t know if it’s the mood I’m in or what but that hug that Ellen gave to Adam there at the end of his song brought a few tears to my eyes. It was just a real genuine hug there, and I loved it.

  • cmc25

Great song and performance that will most likely attract non-idol fans. The unique voice loved by his fans is strong and not muddied by loud intrumentation.

  • unique28v

Looks like Adam is getting an ELLEN bump on iTunes! He just leaped up to #7 (deluxe) /#14 (standard) on the overall chart. Hopefully it’ll get an even more bump as other areas sees the show. UUUGHHH – I didn’t want this talentless poser to outsell Adam…YUCK and double YUCK!!! Rhianna CANNOT sing, and if it wasn’t for the unfortunate fight she had with Chris Brown and Adam’s “not so well received” AMA performance, nobody would even be buying her CD…

I actually didn’t want LGG to outsell him either, because I just CAN’T get into her, I tried to watch her AMA performance, and I had to fast forward after she broke the 2nd whiskey bottle – I JUST DIDN’T GET IT!!!…but to those that love her – Love on!!!

Just so you know, I am not a rock and roll person, I am more R&B, so half the acts that these “new” performers are supposedly patterned after just go right over my head because I don’t listen to any of them.

My favorite song on Adams CD is #7 Loaded Smile – his vocals are sooooooo beautiful.

Now that I think about it… Elizabeth asked a stupid question of Rod Stewart. A man who has had a scandalous rock n roll life. Did Elizabeth really think Rod was an angel back in his heyday? So glad he shut Sherrie and her up with their holier than thou attitude.

“It’s nice that his Mom and family have been there to support him through some bumps in the road’. I wonder what her job is exactly for Adam? “

A good friend of mine has a niece by the name of TAYLOR SWIFT so I have had the good fortune of hearing first hand what is involved when a relative is suddenly in the spotlight. I realize Tayor is 10 yrs. younger than Adam, but his family, like Taylor’s, has to be majorily involved constantly. It is a full time job keeping up assisting with promotions, and appearances, what to wear what to take on the plane etc.. Even with “hired handlers” and an agent, when Adam starts touring it will get even more chaotic. Adam will need all the help he can get from people he can really trust. Taylor just recently finally found someone she could rely on to assist her in her costume changes during her recent tour. Previously, her mother was back stage helping her change clothes between sets. It’s a lot of work, but I am sure his family will love every minute of it. FYI: TAYLOR recently purchased her own 12 passenger jet as she gets mobbed if she flies commercial!!! GO ADAM!!!

If Boston would only add WWFM (okay, *any* New England station) I would be thrilled and start streaming. I have AOL.com on now, b/c they played FYE (and play LLWD), so I was hopeful, but not yet, I guess…

Good for Rod Stewart. He’s having a 7th child? Yeah, he understands the rock n roll lifestyle. ;)

Hey, Adam beat the Twilight Soundtrack, at least! I never expected that. I get everyone else (I didn’t realize John Mayer was as popular as he is). I thought Letterman and the Morning Show would give FYE a bump, but I can see why Ellen did. I hope WWFM starts climbing the charts. You can see what emotion he feels when he sings it. He has also said how much he connects to Broken Open (which he co-wrote) and Soaked (which Matt Bellamy wrote). I don’t know if they will ever chart but I really look forward to him performing them and A Loaded Smile (these are my favorites) on tour. Oh, and IIHY. I really do think RCA will release that at some point.

No – I definitely think so. And the response to it generally seems to be very positive on radio. Now, we play the game of watching the spins. Oh, lordy this is gonna kill me!

Thank you to whoever originally posted the link to the Lisa Paige / Adam Lambert video. If anyone is having a really crappy day, this is the cure. I dare you to be in a bad mood after watching it.

Really? The Washington Post hated it. Not that they’re the only reviewer in the world ;-)

I just got to look at the performance and interview now, and lemme just say:
ADAM IS SO HUGGABLE!!!!!!!! And I thought only straight women were gaga over him, but seems like Ellen is too! Yay!! (I’m kidding BTW)
I want an Adam hug too!!!!!!!! (NOT kidding about THAT)
    And he sounds brilliant!
    Rock on, Adam!!!

  • Mary102

11 adds for Adam :-) Lol – I so need to be working right now!

ETA: Looks like Las Vegas was the last one.

GEESH, TALK ABOUT THE MEDIA TWISTING A PERSON’S COMMENTS:

    THIS today from CNN:

“(CNN) — Adam Lambert says his recent outrageous behavior is due to finally gaining some much-needed self-esteem after slimming down from 250 pounds. ”

    1. First of all, Adam NEVER referred to his own behavior as “outrageous”.
    2. Secondly, they are implying Adam acted outrageously because he so happy that he is no longer fat?

Are you kidding me? This is why I HATE the MSM. He did not mean or say that at all.

In other words, Adam blames his “outrageous” behavior on the fact he used to be a fatso. Utter steaming BS.

I totally love Rihanna’s music and I HATE Rated R. “Russian Roulette” is a HORRIBLE song with so much imagery that sets a bad example for impressionable teens who like to experiment.

It is clear from this album the personal pain she is going through. Well, why would one of the most beautiful women on earth choose one of the biggest pricks on earth to be her BF and stay with him despite the fact he beat her regularly?

She is talented and also quite nuts.

  • Mary102

12 adds now – must step away from the refresh button. Lol.

  • zuper

I totally agree on all of that. MA it is one of my least faves on the album

This is why it is so cool that his album has variety. Music taste differs SO much from person to person. Music Again is my absolute favorite. When they played the first note of in live the other morning, I actually had a tear in my eye I was so happy they were playing it (and I’m not normally like that at all).

An eclectic album was seriously the smartest thing they did.

There seems to be a way to make the page refresh automatically — mine does, anyway ….

Adam’s currently tied with Justin Bieber and Carrie for adds this week, by the way. Cool.

  • Mary102

yep, on the whole, it’s getting pretty glowing reviews.

I do love Rihanna, but from talking to friends, and hearing the word of mouth on the street, Rated R is not getting much love from them. In that respect I tend to agree with the Washington Post review, which said that she went a little too dark and angry, and not really in the most constructive way following the Chris Brown incident. IDK, though. But to me the album is just too angry and depressing. Give me Adam’s fun, sexy jams any day ;-)

Those top 10 album sales are just from iTunes for the week and not the overall weekly sales, correct? I don’t see that Adam’s numbers for the week has come out as yet, or did I miss them?

Nope. You are correct. The combined numbers won’t be out until tomorrow morning. If you look at HDD, Adam is still #3, but we have to wait and see if and how the numbers change.

  • Mary102

An eclectic album was seriously the smartest thing they did.

It’s one of the things I love the most about his album – different songs for different moods etc. I love all of them for different reasons. And they are all instantly stuck in my head – I will literally switch from Fever, to MA, to Soaked, to IIHY, to WWFM, etc. from one moment to the next.

I rarely buy albums because all the songs sound the same, and the most recent ones I bought, I swear I could not tell you most of the songs off the top of my head.

I haven’t even listened to Adam’s album THAT much yet (hey, it’s only been out a week ;-) ) but those songs are all INSTANTLY in my head.

OMG – when he hit the big jump live on the Early Show! I’ll be honest, I was a little nervous about him singing that song, especially so early in the morning – lol, that is NOT easy, even for him! But he absolutely killed it live, and proved what an insanely talented vocalist he is (really, what other singer today could do that?)

i think that’s because people were expecting GGGB part II….club bangers, fluffy, throwaway, but palatable pop music. rated r is very much an “artist’s” album and i applaud her for it.

This is what is wrong with the industry now, they take so many “talentless” people and call them “pretty” then claim they are “stars”…Rhianna can’t hold a note long enough to tell you what it was, and for some reason people call her talented…she’s not the only one, but I have never been a fan, and I don’t think it will ever change…Somebody like JHud that can sings rings around her is often overlooked because she didn’t (but now she does) fit the “talentless, pretty, star” mode…

    I’m just saying…

back to the topic at hand ADAM LAMBERT – now here is a person with talent that made a “mistake in conservative America’s eyes” and now they would love nothing more than to banish him, when the likes of Rhianna can continue…oh nevermind!!!

    About the performance on Ellen-

I love the way he brings his actor self into his songs, the way he “plays” the lyrics- I know some find that “too theatrical” or “fake”, but I don’t! On the contrary- I think it shows his utter respect for his lyrics and their meaning. It’s so much nicer, IMO, than most singers who just sing every song like it’s the same song, only sometimes with a different beat.
He did the same on Idol, I loved it then, and I love it now.

Why some people are always negative? Some people attitudes towards Adam is really weird. Personal dissatisfaction projected onto him, nothing else. I think his is where CNN got the 250 pound part:

‘Lambert, 27, shared in an interview with The Morning Jolt’s Larry Flick on Sirius Radio that he suffered from an ugly duckling complex in his early 20s, after being 250 pounds when he was in high school”

There is video of it but I can’t seem to get the link in here….just look up Morning jolt’s Larry Flick Sirius Radio…and Adams video in his own words about 250 pounds is there

  • smellycat

That is very impressive for Adam to place 3rd especially when competing against Rhianna. It just goes to show that not many people are buying albums legally. I believe that SuBo’s sales were in store by people who were gifting etc.

  • suebrody

Is that short of 200,000K sold? He came in 3rd, after SuBo and GaGa? WTG, Adam!

I want to know more about this commercial…

And every time Adam sings WWFM, he seems to get more emotional, IMO (in a good way). Maybe it’s just the way he has familiarized himself with the song/lyrics and the band, or maybe b/c it just continues to have greater significance for him. I found this was also the case with MW; I liked it better during Top 2 than the first time he sang it. I don’t know why, but I just felt as if he has connected even more to it, somehow. I am not surprised, given his theatre background. The more times you perform in a play, the more “real” it becomes, and you can add nuance to your dialogue and relationship with others in the scene.

Wow, the Bocelli album is the one that sneaked in there! It’s going to be the Josh Groban Noel of this Christmas, it seems. And Miley finishes pretty high, too ….

I am now streaming stations that play Adam, b/c I don’t know if/when any will in New England. (Well, there is one station in Burlington, VT, but you can’t stream it, and KISS 108 FM has bashed Adam more than once for the AMAs, so I would be surprised if they added him unless they have to).

    Wow, Bocelli beat out GaGa…

Yeah, I remember him saying to Larry that he was 250 lbs in high school and wasn’t comfortable in his own skin (and how he still doesn’t always feel good about himself physically). Which has nothing to do w/ CNN’s report whatsoever.

I will take Adam’s numbers any day of the week, and that includes the AMA situation and fairly light airplay. I am still so happy about his appearance on Ellen (tho I wish we could see the edited footage). He seemed so comfortable and Ellen was really supportive. And damn, that performance was brilliant.

(15 of Adam’s are Top 40, and the rest Hot AC). He also has maybe eight?? (or seven?) top 20 markets, too. Which should help the audience impression numbers when and if these all start *playing* the song!

Damn, too bad about the album sales :-( I really wanted more than 200K. But the adds are great! Still, stupid Andrea Bocelli. Between him and SuBo, are seriously the only people buying albums the over 60 crowd – sorry.

Ah, but so many have *stolen* the younger artists’ albums!! So listeners do love them! So why should they feel bad??

  • sr4mjc

Yeah for Milwaulkee, just added and they already have 20 spins! I’m seeing 13 adds today, 14 yesterday. Nice!

Now we just need to see spins!

  • lucy

I take it from the reactions here that this number of adds is good?

Well, we’re not done yet, but at the moment it’s the fifth highest number of adds for any song this week ….

Of course, it’s a little weirder than some, because, as with Kris, there are adds on stations with two different formats (Top 40 and HAC) So that means their climbs toward the top ranks of both formats will be slower than it is for some people, all of whose adds are in the same format. They won’t hit the top 20 of a format as quickly as some other people with the same total number of adds.

Nevertheless, anything in double digits is good. …. And Adam’s got double digit adds in both Top 40 and HAC, and adds in seven or eight of the top-20 largest radio markets. So that means that, if and when the stations start playing the song, it should be heard by a lot of people.

Currently he has 29 total adds this week; 27 in the U.S. and 2 in Canada.

    Yeah, it’s very good.

  • bridgeymah

are seriously the only people buying albums the over 60 crowd ‘“ sorry.

It’s like Adam said – most people these days do the playlist thing. I hardly ever buy a whole album, but will pick and choose the songs that I like via Itunes and make my own albums. And don’t think I am unique in any way. Now oldies – they WILL buy the whole album. Conditioning from when you didn’t have a choice. Also the types of people who buy something like Subo or Bocelli are more casual music listeners. Like my mum who will put on a CD every now and then, but doesn’t have music playing 24/7 like me.

  • alison8701

I like Whataya Want From Me. That’s def one to add to the iPod and play real loudly in the car.

  • Mary102

Damn, too bad about the album sales

Just had to respond to my own comment – sorry for being negative, because, as I read the other posts, his numbers are indeed really awesome imo, considering who beat him (srsly?), that he is the top pop/contemporary album, that he beat Rihanna and Gaga (!), and the current music climate (illegal downloads, etc.)

  • lorismile

    1. Awesome interview and performance Adam!!!
    2. Why does everything Adam does and tweets make the news of the mainstream media??? Interesting to say the least.
    3. Fabulous news on the CD sales!!! I was happy he hit 100K based on some of the numbers established artists have been getting.
    4. He know has 30 adds for the week!! :-)

  • bridgeymah

  • suebrody

lol, bridgey. That’s b/c you live down under. ;)

Did he get 30 adds? Up from 28? Terrific!

Spins is not bad, actually, considering how many stations added him today. We’ll know more as the week goes on, and there should be more bumps with more programs (e.g., Barbara Walters should give the album, if not WWFM, a huge bump).

  • suebrody

NVM that I said RIP to FYE, I guess. ;) So he may have two songs in rotation? That has worked for BEP; would that work well for Adam, do you think?

  • crazylady

Boy, it’s been a great day for Adam fans! He was superb on Ellen!

Oh…I just Googled Dick Clark’s Rockin New Year’s Eve 2010 and it (Wikipedia) says the performers have not been announced so I’m not sure where Billboard got their information. Also, it’s not listed on AO under “Events” either. Maybe they are just waiting for an official announcement to list it. Hopefully, we’ll know something soon.

Congrats to Adam on his sales! Fantastic!!

  • bridgeymah

Suebrody – I don’t think it hurts him to have two in rotation esp when they are so different. Gives people different tastes of him, cause we know he isn’t always “soft and sweet” :-)

  • lorismile

    Next wave.

I really need Adam to take a vacation soon so I can actually get work done!

Not sure how you are counting adds but he has 30 total with 2 from Canada and 28 from USA.

  • dab1234

Just watched Ellen and thought it was a great interview and, as usual, his song was great. Love the numbers coming in, too (sales and adds).
    Great job, ADAM!!!!!!!!!!

  • suebrody

    lorismile, lol and true

I am still smiling about Adam’s WWFM on Ellen. Some people are just getting home and tweeting about it. Or posting, like you dab1234. I have been on all day. Excuse? Won’t be on tonight. :)

  • HermeticallySealed

    Woot! 32 adds now!

  • Janus

Loved his interview with Ellen today. He and the band sounded awesome! I really like WWFM and even more so when it’s performed live. So very happy he’s assembled a great band! ROCK ON ADAM!!!

  • lorismile

Hi. *waving* Decided to come back; missed posting about Adam too much. ;)

  • dcglam

Later in the show, Adam performed ‘Whataya Want From Me’ , and it was pretty effin fantastic.</

I couldn’t agree more! Just got home from work and literally “ran” to my computer. I love Ellen and was soooooo looking forward to this day. Fabulous interview and sensational performance, Adam!
And you are pretty sensational yourself, MJ, for providing his fans (like me) with all the very latest on our guy. ;)

  • Momma52

Well, I must say Ellen was great with Adam and Adam was great with Ellen. Nice interview and the audience was very receptive. Great job with the band and song. Bravo!

  • Squirrely

I really enjoyed this! The interview and the song were awesome – love this guy!

  • karenw

I really liked this interview too… I had my reservations about Ellen being a judge on Idol but I think she’ll be pretty good .. loved the chemistry between her and Adam

.. and that live performance was just “wow”..makes me a bit more sad that apart from all the hoo haa with the AMA’s his vocals weren’t showcased properly

  • sidewalkstory

Adam’s PR people and stylist were on the ball too. Did you notice less eye-makeup and instead of black, Adam wore a softer color – brown? A little image re-work for the post AMA damage control.

And I see my 2day YouTube measure is still valid. Never-mind if you weren’t here last night.

  • Organic

I really liked this color on Adam. I think it matches his skin tone really well.

Yep……..Adam was perfection today. Ellen was the perfect show for him in this situation. She is kind and understanding, not pushy and in-your-face. I adore Ellen.

…and those vocals…..spot on! Can’t help but wondering what if this had been the AMA’s…….oh well, can’t go back, only forward…..but what if…..

  • jammasta

I’m probably late to say this, but in the picture MJ posted, it looks like Adam is saying “STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

I’ll comment on the performance later when my internet has better connection.

This is the first time I saw it on MJ’s–wow. Adam looks amazing, and you can see the affection he and Ellen have for one another. I hope he comes back again soon and they can dance together. (And yes on the color scheme; I love it when he is more toned down, and of course has emo hair.)

I totally disagree. Kelly and others were in the middle of the show, not closing it. If Adam had nailed the vocals on the AMA’s it would have been the last thing people saw of the show and I believe it would have stuck in their minds.

Anyone notice that FYE is not dead? It has 3 adds today:

Unfortunately, if Adam had stood and sang this song, they would have placed him in the middle of the pack. Lady Gaga would have closed the show. It’s the cold, hard truth.
(I think he does a beautiful job on this song, also.)

  • glamfan

i loved this interview and performance. i especially like that he said he didn’t mean to disrespect anyone, and i forgive him now. if adam had done a performance like this at the AMA’s, i think he would have gained a lot of new fans, but unfortunately there a lot of people now who will never give him a chance, and other people who were fans who stopped being one. i almost gave up on him but i’ve changed my mind and still want to support him, just not every single thing he does.

  • dsp

Thank Goodness He revived the Emo hair so suebrody can show some love!!!!!I love it too!!! He really touched a soft spot in that performance and interview..almost brought me to tears. Loving the chemistry between Ellen and Adam and can’t praise the band enough!!!!!!

  • webster

Just got a chance to see this stuff. “Taste, not morals” Glad he had a chance to articulate that idea.

I’m not all that nuts about WWFM – not a bad song, but not very interesting to me (I like Fever much better), but I’m also glad that he’s getting so many other solid performances out there, too. (And I could hear the bass a bit better. One more crank on the knob, though please, Adam. Thx.)

And good on Ellen that they used FYE for his walking out music. I’ve always liked her – I saw her doing stand-up years before she was ever on TV, and she’s just been a solid, likeable person through out. Nice.

  • asifclueless

    Thanks for the videos, mj.
Everything from this show is perfect. The band looks great. The vocals are immaculate. People feel good after the show. Ellen is very kind and understanding. The audience has a good time. It’s a good day for Adam.

Adam looks gorgeous. Is the jacket the same as the one from ROF? I kind of recognized it from the back part.

  • iluvai

And good on Ellen that they used FYE for his walking out music.

Yep, I thought that was good too.

  • hypertwink

Good thing Ellen is now a judge of AI. 19 has a new venue to do damage control (with Ryan on radio), especially with the very popular, very likable Ellen.

  • revcat

It was all kinds of good – Ellen and her audience loved him and so did I! :)

  • lizland

I haven’t had a chance to read the thread so may be repeating some thoughts. But wow, what a backslide on the PR message. From poor me, everyone is a homophobe so F them – to well maybe I did go too far too fast. I wonder if there were actually a lot of orders canceled, feedback to RCA or something else that caused this complete about face.

But his sales numbers still came in strong, so I don’t expect it really impacted him negatively much.

  • maggie mae

I, too, am glad to see SueBrody back tonight! I always enjoy your comments a lot. Was home from work this afternoon and so enjoyed
Adam on Ellen…I love his dark brown hair and he just looked beautiful and handsome, as Ellen pointed out! Loved his hair style and his clothing was killer. The vocals awesome and he just seemed to be really happy to be there and just very comfortable with Ellen. I think she will have the kindness that Paula had for contestants. Thank God for Paula at Adam’s audition…..I can still see Simon giving his thoughts about Adam’s performance. But, I think Randy was sold right on the first note too. Things are looking good for Adam now and I feel that the year 2010 will be a very good one for him, and, hope so for Kris and all the other season 8 idols. I just don’t know if I can get as involved with season 9….I am still hooked on Adam and his career!!!
Think I will be following him until I am a little ole lady, which may come sooner than I think! Now, if TFM can just be nominated for the Academy Awards…don’t care if it doesn’t win, just want to hear him sing!!!!!!and, blow everyone away this time in a really good way. Is the song eligible for the upcoming awards?

what a backslide on the PR message.

Where some see backslide, I just see a week’s worth of perspective. The adrenaline will have receded. The fight (of fight or flight) instinct diminished. Emotional safety net of returning home.

  • clearone

Good point. Yes, I do think that management has had some say in this as well, but ultimately it’s Adam who wants this career and I think he realized that to have long term success, concessions had to be made. Like it or not, he knows he needs the ABC’s of the world to have the kind of success he wants.

  • Fe

OK, I was pretty angry with Adam’s attitude and reaction to the AMA backlash. His performance really pissed me off. I remember reading that it was described as ‘sexy’ from rehearsals. Sexy I love, because part of the reason why I loved Adam was/is because he’s sexy. The performance was anything but sexy, it was vulgar. His attitude during the aftermath made it worse because he became arrogant and disrespectful, and playing the gay card totally pushed me over. I don’t care that he’s gay, that doesn’t matter to me at all, and it just seems to me that it was very weak of him to throw that card out there….he’s better than that. I admired him on Idol not just for that outrageous voice and talent he possesses, but because he was always so respectful, handled himself well even though Simon didn’t seem to always ‘get’ him (Ring of Fire was one of my favorite performances). I am very happy that he is seeing what upset people, and has learned from it. Kudos to Adam for articulating so well his new approach and attitude. Well done Adam! Just keep singing….people will get over themselves.

  • oceana

People would have forgot about Adam just like they forgot about Kelly Clarkson and other performers that night.

Who’s to say that people forgot about Kelly that night? Or Lady Gaga or anyone else? We don’t know what’s in their minds, or what they remember of that night. Several people here commented the next day on what a great performance Kelly had. Lady Gaga might have left an impression on lots of people who don’t post on this board. She left one on me, I’m not a fan but I found her interesting that night.

Just because there’s not controversy about other performers doesn’t necessarily mean that nobody noticed them or that people forgot about them. Maybe some of them left a positive impression and if everyone wasn’t talking about them at the water cooler the next day, that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Controversy isn’t always desirable.

  • YankeeFan08

Very cute. I have to agree with him on toothpaste. Even more distressing is the number of choices for paint color, for a color like green for instance. LOL Once he buys his new house, I’m pretty sure this will drive him nuts. Except he’ll have an interior designer, so no, I guess not.

  • SpenserJ

Except he’ll have an interior designer, so no, I guess not.

It’s still an impossible task, even with the help of a designer. Far too many color choices out there indeed :)

I’d never seen that 5 questions thing before. Funny answers.

  • Maria22

Loved the performance and the interview and it’s great to see Adam relaxed and enjoying himself after what must have been an incredibly stressful week for him (and his fans, LOL)…Band looks great too and sounds tight!

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

I’m so behind. Thanks for the vids, MJ.

I doubt that Adam was all that impulsive in his choice of performance the other night, but hey, it didn’t offend me. I think he’s a smart cookie and knows exactly what he’s doing, including the Ellen interview. Hope it works out for him. Finally downloaded him and Lava Girl tonight!

  • BeckyMD

Except he’ll have an interior designer, so no, I guess not.

Isn’t Adam’s mom an interior designer? I remember it’s her who introduced Drake who is also an interior designer (kinda. it took me a while to recall his name) to Adam.

  • JIMDOGSILKIES

Excellent vocals, & the band was great and in sync. I think, rather I hope, that this appearance was seen at the very least by fans who were turned off by his AMA performance. Ellen brilliantly introduced him by saying he is “extremely talented”, and also said, she hopes the AMAs don’t “hurt” him b/c he is “talented”, “smart”, “beautiful”, “nice, etc. Ellen seems to geniunely like Adam both as a person and a performer and she tried to show him as a likeable, talented young man who made an error in judgment, but who should be given a chance based on his attributes. Adam presented as the person and singer many had grown to love on AI; he was articulate, endearing, etc. Even his look I felt was done more conservatively with less dramatic makeup and a brown/black leather jacket, shirt and tie. (I prefer this look and his hair styled like it was on Ellen). I feel Adam received a lot of support and has a lot of fans that are women; mothers, grandmothers, professional women, etc. who were turned off by both the AMA performance and what he said in interviews immediately after the AMAs. Hopefully he is doing enough damage control to gain fans; both ones that he already had and new ones. I assume Ellen’s demographics are in line with the fan demos for Adam. Ellen is a supportive, safe place for Adam to start damage control which I believe he needed to do. I still think he may have to come out more and actually apologize; but ultimately he should be true to himself and do what he really feels in his heart. While taking a step back and saying he realized what he did, he is also giving people a chance to hear his great vocals. I know nothing about what are good sales numbers but considering everything I assume ~200K is good after the AMAs, in this economy, and with the way the music industry is now. I truly wish him great success but still feel most of his success may come from international fans. Time will tell. JMHO!

  • Grammie Kari

Several people here commented the next day on what a great performance Kelly had.

Thank you for this comment, Oceana. I was one of those people who felt Kelly’s performance was one of the best of the night.

Trying to come to terms with my feelings about Adam. I could watch and hear him perform all day. He is so talented and doesn’t need to be OTT to sell albums. He is so nice looking and I love how he dresses. I know I am in a minority here, but I just don’t like his interviews.

    Controversy isn’t always desirable.

JMHO!

Isn’t Adam’s mom an interior designer? I remember it’s her who introduced Drake who is also an interior designer (kinda. it took me a while to recall his name) to Adam.

I think you are right!!! She is so cute and hip. I loved her outfit during the AI finale.

    Tweet from Adam:

Unfortunately, if Adam had stood and sang this song, they would have placed him in the middle of the pack. Lady Gaga would have closed the show. It’s the cold, hard truth.

    ^^^ ITA

Viewers tend to drop off towards the end of a long show as they either have to get up early in the morning or just lose interest. So Adam was supposed to be the wild card keeping people watching till the end. If it hadn’t been Adam advertised as “shocking” it would have been someone else, perhaps Gaga. Anyway, it’s water under the bridge now, but ABC and his management are partially to blame for Adam’s fiasco as they encouraged him to walk on the wild side. Not saying he didn’t take it too far, but still wonder why TPTB even went down that path. It proved to be a very slippery slope.

How do the idols wind up selling albums from here anyways. Aren’t their AI fanbases all tapped into by now? AI better have Adam on during the season and for the finale. Those will def. be episodes I turn in for.

Great performance and interview by Adam. Very smart to do damage control. He came across as humble enough to know he exhibited poor judgment and that he doesn’t blame ABC. The performance was perfect. Wonder what he would have sold if he did that performance?

He does have a killer voice and talent. I wonder where all the guidance has been. These Idols haven’t made it on their own for a reason. I think RCA was crazy to give him all that control. Like Ellen, I do hope he didn’t ruin it.

This. Personally, I think Adam is falling on his sword for ABC. I think if ABC really had to own up to what they were promoting and how it differed from Adam’s actual performance, I think it would come down to the gender of who got groped and kissed and ABC would have a lot of explaining to do. But I am glad Adam didn’t apologize because that would mean apologizing for who he is. This can’t be about trying to find someone who is unique, exciting and innovative and then forcing them to conform. Furthermore, one can only do so much conforming for the money before they feel like they are selling out. So, while I want Adam to garner new fans and win back those fans he lost after the AMAs, I don’t want it to be through “false advertising.” Adam remains who he is and that person is the same person who performed at the AMAs.

I think it has nothing to do with the “gender who got groped and kissed”. I think it has nothing to do with “kissing” and all about someone simulation giving someone a bj on tv which was very crude and not appropriate for an award show regardless of who is giving or getting the simulated bj. It crossed the line no matter who did it. Adam knew exactly what he was doing and is now just making excuses. When he flipped off the viewers or whoever on live tv, what did he think people would think? f-you is a pretty specific statement, don’t you think? Am I supposed to think “oh, cool” (and I liked Adam on Idol – Adam and Alison were my two favorites) but the fact is that it was crude and unnecessary – just my opinion.

Loved the Ellen interview and performance. It’s so obvious that she adores him and I’m so happy that she showed him a little TLC…he definitely needed it after this last week.

I picked up a couple of Adam’s CDs today at my local Walmart. I live in a small town in southern Ohio. I wasn’t sure if there were actually any Adam fans here since most people I know don’t really watch Idol. I was pleasantly surprised to see only 6 of Adam’s CDs left on the shelf. Next to his was Subo, Kris Allen, and Lady Gaga. Out of the four, Lady Gaga and Adam had the fewest CDs left. When I was at the counter paying, the cashier said, “You know, I heard that he’s gay. That’s too bad cuz he’s so gorgeous! How come I never see any straight guys who look like that?” I laughed and agreed with her and then asked if they had sold very many of his CDs. She said, “Oh yea, quite a bit. And it’s funny cuz there were several kids who came in dressed up like him.” I thought that was really cute. It’s nice to know that I’m not the only Adam fan in these parts. :)

We will never know about sales. He might have sold MORE because of the AMAs. NO ONE will ever know the answer to that.

You do know there was a song writer, two choreographers, a set designer, and costume designer. Also RCA was with him every step of the way during the THREE WEEKS he rehearsed this routine. AMA saw 95% of performance and pimped it for all it was worth. That included the S&M costuming (with cute leashes) and imagery. Adam was not given “complete control”!

Where did you hear Ellen say Adam had “ruined it”? I didn’t hear her say that at all. She said the same thing he did on stage had been done by females for years. Ellen also said ABC was wrong for cancelling him from the morning show. She completely supported Adam!

This. Personally, I think Adam is falling on his sword for ABC.

Absolutely. Adam has been raked over the coals enough for this…..ABC milked the shock value of his performance all night long, and then is shocked when it is “shocking” (kicking puppies would have been shocking — what adam did, in the context of a risque award show IMO was not shocking (well, the poor singing was shocking to me))…i think it is time to give the guy a break and move on

IA, Cmom. If it was a female dancer involved it would have been worse.

I don’t really care about this anymore but do disagree with those that are blaming ABC. Adam’s a grown man and someone who has experience onstage. I doubt he was able to do anything he wanted in the heat of the moment when he was in musicals. ABC gave him a lot of camera time all during the show plus gave him the last performance which to me is still odd given they had a lot of more known acts that would have made more sense. I don’t think they needed him to get people to continue to watch.

Going on Ellen probably did help with those that were offended.

  • claudette

Ellen’s last words to him were something to the effect that “I hope this doesn’t hurt you…I think you are a good guy.” She agreed that he used poor judgment. Adam doesn’t blame ABC.

Adam made a mistake and got caught up in all of it. I accept that and I think his honesty will win back fans. He comes from working the gay club circuit in Hollywood and this is/was part of performances he’s done and did.

I wish he had close friends, since I guess it wasn’t RCA, to give him a little more guidance. The whole first song choice was wrong. But I think he’s a good guy with a great voice. Ellen seemed to really love him, as do others.

If you read tweets and media from other artists, they mostly say they just want to hear him sing. That’s what he needs to do. Adam’s taking responsibility for poor judgment and that’s good enough for me.

  • tiger92

Musicals are entirely different than performing LIVE on stage. It’s a whole different world.
ABC giving him the last spot wasn’t odd. They had seen 95% of the performance. They knew it would be controversial and they were loving it. They have some responsibility in this.
But, Adam is taking full responsibility and is owning all of it. No mention of choreographers or ABC approval of the overall imagery. I’m not sure what else he can say.

“”Excellent vocals, & the band was great and in sync. I think, rather I hope, that this appearance was seen at the very least by fans who were turned off by his AMA performance. Ellen brilliantly introduced him by saying he is “”

It was seen by a few school teachers in the audience that day at Ellen’s, who didnt think much of him. The guy who preps the audience came over to our side and asked who the Adam fans were and most of us clapped that we were but 4 teachers right next to us (with Adams mom right by them, behind me) said, OH wait, we are not Adam fans, we would die if our kids saw us cheering for him, WE are Ellen fans – BUT during his performance you could see them enjoying it and afterwards they said he was great, so I think he got new fans that day!
