Get on Downton: Period drama recruits X Factor finalist for assault on hit parade
The Dowager Countess would no doubt disapprove. But Downton Abbey is to launch an assault on the pop charts with a “love theme” inspired by its leading characters and performed by a former X Factor contestant.

Don Black, the lyricist behind the Bond theme “Diamonds Are Forever”, has written the words to a new song, “I’ll Count The Days”, which will be used as the backdrop to the love story between the characters Matthew Crawley and Lady Mary. The thwarted lovers are, finally, to be married in the new series.

“I’ll Count The Days” is sung by Rebecca Ferguson, a former X Factor finalist. Decca, the record company releasing the album, which hits stores later this month, has high hopes that the love theme will become a chart-topper.

I’ll prove Cowell was wrong to dump me: After winning X Factor and revealing he was gay, Joe McElderry was brutally dropped…now he’s out for revenge
Singer Joe McElderry, who won The X Factor in 2009 and Popstar To Operastar in 2011, celebrated his 21st birthday this year.

After three hit albums, a successful UK tour and twice singing before the Queen, he has treated himself to a house and a car.

It’s all part of his determination to recover from the humiliation of being dropped by Simon Cowell’s record label, Syco, after he was unable to sustain the initial success of having a chart-topping single, The Climb, and a hit debut album.

‘People said “Oh, poor old Joe”, but I never felt sorry for myself,’ he says. ‘I didn’t want anyone to wipe my tears and pat me on the head. I just picked myself up, dusted myself off and got back to work to show Syco they were wrong.’

Filming at a stately home in Northamptonshire was halted after producers spied movement in the grounds.

They feared it was paparazzi trying to snap Gary and Cheryl arriving by helicopter. But when security men raced over to the bushes they discovered a randy couple going at it “without a care in the world”.

Cheryl Cole has revealed that she is only returning to the X Factor because judge and friend Gary Barlow asked her to.

So is Simon Cowell cracking up? 4am phone calls. 20-hour days. A ‘breakdown this summer’. But that’s not the half of it…
The clock stood at nearly midnight one Saturday night when Simon Cowell called on my mobile phone. He wondered, politely, whether this was the wrong moment to ring me to brief me about what a nice person he is really.

During the conversation — in the late spring of this year, just after the publication of a biography of Cowell by Tom Bower — he was as polite as he always is, but clearly under strain.

He admitted to me that he’d told his housekeeper not to bring him any newspapers for a few days because he hated the negative stories written about the contents of the book, covering everything from his affair with Dannii Minogue to his outlandish and expensive health regimes. Not long after that call, at 1.06am, I received a long email headed: ‘Personal note from Simon Cowell’, which he had dictated to his assistant, Jennie Paine. It was more than 1,000 words long.

I agreed to keep the conversation and the email private, but I am not breaking that confidence too much if I say that he wanted the world to appreciate his successes as a businessman, and as a creative person, and to accept that he is not a ‘monster’ when it comes to women — just someone who occasionally makes an off-colour joke.
