One Direction have been named the IFPI Global Recording Artists of 2013, receiving the newly-created award honouring the most popular recording artist across music downloads, streaming and physical format sales.
One Direction have seen huge success with their third studio album Midnight Memories, which contained the hit singles Best Song Ever and Story of My Life. The album topped the US Billboard Top 200 chart, making One Direction the first group in the charts history to debut at No. 1 with its first three albums. It also topped the charts in countries from Australia to the UK.
The video for Best Song Ever attracted almost 200 million views on YouTube and Story of My Life’s video recorded more than 100 million views. The band’s music was also heavily streamed on services such as Deezer and Spotify.

Matt Cardle revealed that his diet of prescription drugs and alcohol sent him weeks away from death.
The 30-year-old X Factor winner, who has just been discharged from a month in rehab, began mixing the drugs and only realised he needed help after collapsing in public, stripping on a train and nearly choked to death after throwing up on his sleep.
He told The Sun: ‘I was so out of it – I was like a zombie.’
Matt checked into The Priory, in Chelmsford, on Boxing Day, after breaking down in front of his family.
He added: ‘The doctor said to me if I’d bee left to my own devices for another three or four weeks I might not be here now.’
Circumstances went from bad to worse when Matt began lying about the amount of Vallium he was taking, saying that they were antibiotics.

X Factor runner up Nicholas McDonald is all set to release his debut album and there’s no real surprises.
We were never expecting a grunge rock and gangsta rap mash up record from the Scottish teenager but his Mother’s Day effort is even more predictable than… well, what we were predicting.
The 17-year-old is all set to release the album, titled In the Arms Of an Angel, on March 17 in the lead up to Mother’s Day at the end of the month.
The LP will contain a total of eleven tracks of which only three are originals.

According to one X Factor ‘insider’, Nicole’s could quit the show in order to become a mum because apparently being a talent show judge is something she can do anytime.
“At the end of the day somebody is going to have to make a sacrifice and they’ve agreed that for now it makes more sense if that’s Nicole,” says rather dubious insider.
They claimed to Reveal magazine this month: “Nicole has her whole life ahead to pursue her art and her career. For Lewis it’s very much about the here and now. A racing driver’s career is short and he can’t afford to take his eye off the ball – it’s a life or death thing, the margin for error is so small.”
