X Factor Theme Next Week: Rock + Simon Takes Another Dig at Idol

Simon Cowell revealed to reporters after last night’s results show (which sent the Stereo Hogzz, another one of Paula’s groups, packing) the next week’s theme is Rock.  (Via the Hollywood Reporter)

But as Simon often does, he changed his mind. Initially the theme was supposed to be Lady Gaga and Madonna.   “I changed my mind,” he said. “What I like about Wednesday’s show was the idea of someone, particularly Astro, using the whole stage without props. And I thought doing Lady Gaga and Madonna could get a bit too choreography-led and also too restrictive for someone like Astro. Rock music gives you a better chance to use the whole stage like we did on the auditions: just you and a huge platform behind you and make it like it’s your first concert.”

So, Simon is pimping Astro now?  Also, I’m not sure I get his reasoning. Songs can be changed up in a variety of ways. Just because a contestant is singing a Lady Gaga song, does not mean they need to wear a lobster costume.

Oh, and Simon took another swipe at Idol. Apparently, he “hated” last week’s results show, “I didn’t think the production was very good, I didn’t like the guest artist [Outasight], we all looked tired,”  he added that it felt “a bit Idol, like, ‘You’ll find out… after the break.’ Where have I heard that before? I don’t like that. I can always feel the energy, and I’ve got to admit, sitting there last week was hard work. This week, it all felt better — like we clicked.”

Last week’s results show dragged, but I didn’t see much of an improvement this week, to be honest.  The first half an hour is a complete waste.  Do we really need every single moment of the performance show recapped? When Idol eliminated the useless recap, it made the results show  snappier.  Idol producer, Nigel Lythgoe is the king of drawing out the results. He knows how to create tension. Simon could learn a thing or two if he’d stop hatin’ and pay attention.

The guest performers were slightly better this week.  Not sure what that dig directed at Outasight was about. Maybe he’s worried they weren’t famous enough?  Perhaps the booking was at the behest of X Factor sponsor, Pepsi. The song “Tonight’s the Night” is more or less the cola company’s latest jingle.

Rock week. What do you think the contestants should sing next week?
