The Voice season 14 premiered tonight with Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Alicia Keys and newbie Kelly Clarkson on the coaches panel. And of course, a slew of new hopefuls performed for a coveted spot on a coaches team.

First things first: The Block is an unnecessary twist that doesn’t add much to the show. Two coaches have already used up their single block. In one instance, Blake used it against his nemesis Adam. In another, Alicia used it on Blake to keep him from snatching a country artist. Ironically in both cases, the hopeful didn’t choose the coach that used the block! The show presents the twist as a strategic device. But naw. It’s just more fodder for the coaches’ made for TV drama. But in the meantime, if a singer had their sights set on a coach who is blocked? Too bad! Meh.
Kelly Clarkson’s high energy and effervescent personality make her a perfect The Voice cast member. She is hilarious, enthusiastic and really fun to watch. But what I’m looking forward to most is watching her actually coach her teams. In several interviews, she has talked about the strategy she employed on American Idol. She plans to help her team choose the perfect songs to be sung at the perfect time. And as anyone who follows singing shows knows, strategy and song choice ARE KEY. I am rooting for her to win, as well as keep Blake and Adam in their places.
The usual array of talent comprised tonight’s line-up of The Voice hopefuls. Kelsey Johnson, D.R. King and Drew Cole were my favorite singers. No turn singer Makenzie Thomas earned an honorable mention. I think she got robbed. Additionally, kudos to The Voice for posting the No Turn performances. It’s the first time ever, I believe.
