What a night of great music huh? One great thing about cutting half the contestants in one fell swoop, is that it raises the stakes exponentially, which are reflected in the performances.

Lauren Duski is really the contestant to beat at this point. Blake Shelton has won The Voice almost 50% of the time because he knows what the hell he’s doing. He’s chosen perfect songs for his team. Aliyah Moulden came into the competition like a pageant girl. You could almost see her thinking “NOW HERE’S WHERE I WINK AT THE JUDGES!” But in a few short weeks, Blake has molded her into a serious singer. He’s done fairly well with TSoul too. In less capable hands, his tenure on The Voice could have been a disaster. But Blake knew how to make the most of his soulful quirk.

Now, his better half, on the other hand. WHAT WAS GWEN THINKING. Her choice for Brennley Brown, who had a pretty serious run going, was a real head scratcher. Handing her a novelty country song when her competition was performing ballads and pulling the God card?  Was she trying to sabotage her? And her coaching of Hunter Plake. The thing that makes Hunter HUNTER is the way he plays with melody. Getting up on stage and singing a straightforward karaoke version of a boring U2 song. Whyyyyy??? And he sang first. There’s a pretty good chance he’ll have to sing for the save tomorrow.

Two of the best singers remaining are on Team Alicia. That duet between Chris Blue and Vanessa Ferguson was all kinds of hot. While Chris will likely advance into the Top 3 tomorrow, Vanessa may be eliminated altogether. Or maybe not, because her duet is in the Top 10 right now. Her solo, which was a beautifully wrought rendition of “Superstar” isn’t faring as well. She’s one of those interesting singers whose vibe just does not translate to the voting public.

That leaves Team Adam and his lonely only team member, Jesse Larson. Hoo boy, the producers are pretty anxious to keep Adam’s last singer in the competition eh? Adam was even given the opportunity to beg for America’s votes before Jesse took the stage. And then after as well. Having said that, Jesse deserved the praise. That was a terrific performance.
