The Voice season got a last start due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but FINALLY it’s here. And I must say, it’s great to have everybody back in the studio. So far, talent shows have done a good job adjusting to COVID friendly environments. The canned audience reactions are a little weird. But silence would also be odd. It’s too bad families can’t be in the studio with the artists. But all in all, bringing back live performances in front of the coaches is the important thing. Home videos filmed with iPhones were simply no substitution for studio renditions.

R&B stand out Kendra Jade caught the most attention tonight, followed by countertenor John Holiday. Although, I wonder if he’ll be able to navigate singing different genres. If he’s not a versatile singer, he won’t last long. Country singer Jim Ranger got a ton of attention too. Two commercials broke up his audition, which made it the centerpiece of the night. Afterward, I discovered his American Idol audition from 2010. And I gotta be honest. I don’t remember him at all. He made it to Hollywood, but was cut pretty quickly. Having said that, ten years at the grind has definitely made him a better vocalist.

She only got two turns, but I like Payge Turner vocal style. She seems to have versatility and the potential to be a real dark horse.
