Tonight’s The Voice was more of the same. Only, instead of promoting former child stars, the big night ending performance teased a kiss between Christina Aguilera and a female contestant, Kata Hay, as potential water cooler fodder. Who knew a chaste peck on the lips could get Pharrell so hot.
I mean. The shtick is getting old guys, including the frenemy “bromance” between Adam Levine and Blake Shelton. I think we’ve explored every possibility there, unless both leave their current significant others to become an item. Wouldn’t that be something. Speaking of which: I made the huge mistake of browsing the #Shevine tag on Tumblr. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
Additionally, the whole “let’s wait til the very last minute to push our buttons, for dramatic effect!” is already totally not dramatic. Adam, Pharrell and Blake steadfastly sitting on their hands while the talented young R&B singer, Shalyah Fearing, wailed her face off on stage, seemed a deliberate move to hand the singer off to Christina. These Blind Auditions are maybe not so blind…
Once again, the girls overshadowed the boys. The single male standout was country soulster Adam Wakefield. Watch out for him. His type is manna to singing show voters. Joe Vivona showed some promise, but we’ll have to see if he can hold up under the pressure.
Young Shalyah was really impressive. The country singers, Angie Keilhauer and Kata Hay show promise. Kata is either going to delight or annoy viewers with her outsized personality. Probably both. Oversold singer of the night: Emily Keener, who sang consistently out of tune, yet the coaches all turned and gave her a standing O. Alrighty then.
The producers seem to be gunning for a girl winner this year. Good luck with that.
