SYTYCD 10- Top 18/16 Week- Recap and Discussion Thread

Join me for the Top 18/Top 16 week. Who do you think is in the bottom 3?

Opening Number: Pretty Face by SOLEY (Contemporary by Christopher Scott and Sonya Tayeh)
Jade is NOT on stage? I’m guessing his injury was bad enough… will we see him later? There’s a cool stage thing in the middle of the stage, and overall this just looks like a really cool dance.

Cat addresses the Jade injury. He needs surgery, and can’t dance for 3-4 months. Jade is in the audience. Cat then has to address the format change. The cuts are happening at the end of the show. Nigel and Mary are joined by Paula Abdul and Erin Matthews.

17 Dancers Remain. Rumors of Carlos being invited back I guess are not true.

BOTTOM 6:
Jasmine Mason
Curtis
Alexis
Bluprint
Jenna
and Jade

Jade is the eliminated dancer for the guys. All three girls will dance for their lives. This is kind of an absurd bottom 6. I don’t know if these results and last weeks results represent any kind of a pattern. I’m not sure any of these girls deserved to go home this week. Malece has fans yo.

Alexis’s tap solo was pretty good. She danced to Try A Little Tenderness.
Jasmine Mason danced to Jazmine Sullivan. lol. Sometimes I feel like contemporary solos all look the same, and this one felt super generic to me.
Jenna won’t go home. They just sent home the other ballroom girl last week. She has the hardest work as a soloist, because her style is usually not done solo, but her solo is probably my favorite. Based on the solos, Jasmine Mason is my pick to go home.

1) Amy and Fik-Shun- Paso Doble by Jean Marc- Tactical Dominance
The dance is a war between Amy and Fik-Shun. They’re supposed to be enemies. I was watching Fik-Shunn the entire time, and his carriage is actually great. He’s got a really strong upper body positioning for an untrained dancer. He clearly worked his ass off for this dance. Amy was terrific as well. But Fik-Shun, damn dude. You just put Cyrus to shame. Mary loved it. Fik-Shun blew her mind. She called some of it professional level, and he’s got a little bit of work to do in some other parts. Mary calls Amy a warrior princess. Mary said no one will be going home from this dance. lol. Erin calls them the one to beat. Paula she’s overwhelmed to see them in person. Paula would have hired Amy back in the day. Paula apparently knows Fik-Shun from 2 years ago, and she’s proud of his growth in that time. Nigel says they demand attention. Nigel says they haven’t done anything wrong yet as a couple.

2) Jasmine H. and Aaron- Broadway by Spencer Liff- They Just Keep Moving The Line from Smash
Jasmine has been murdered, and Aaron has to investigate her murder, with the help of her spirit. Aaron is great in this style. He’s a showman, for sure. Jasmine is fantastic as well. This routine solidifies for me that these are my 2 favorite dancers in the competition. I’m so glad Aaron was given a chance at the top 10. Erin compliments the choreography. Erin loved Jasmine’s legs, and complimented their emotion. She said Aaron made it look effortless. Paula says Aaron reminds her of a throwback to the dancers who were under contract at MGM back in the day. She says Jasmine reminds her of Cyd Charisse. Nigel thinks they could both be on Broadway. Mary says it was style and class. She says Jasmine put all of her emotion out there, and says Aaron is a perfect partner.

3) Makenzie and Paul- Choreography by Lindsay (New Choreographer!)- No Day But Today by Idina Menzel
Makenzie has a terminal illness, and Paul can’t accept it. Holy hell, this is beautiful. I didn’t even type during the dance. Makenzie… fantastic. Paul!? He moves like a contemporary dancer. And his EMOTION was 100%. All on that stage. Loved this dance. This is exactly the dance that Makenzie needed to move up the ranks. Paula thanked the choreographer. Paula talks about working with Make A Wish. Paula confused Paul with Alan for a second, but corrected herself. Nigel says Makenzie is one of the best technical dancers on the show. Nigel says it was beautiful, and also thanks the choreographer. Mary cried a bit. She calls Makenzie “liquid gold”, and Paul a huge surprise. She hadn’t seen an honest performance from him yet, and he surprised her. Erin bought Paul’s emotion. Erin doesn’t think Makenzie should have ever been in the bottom.

4) Jasmine M and Alan- Jazz with Shaun Cheeseman- Veins by Charlotte Martin
Alan is a King in this. My problem is that this dance came directly after an emotional dance, and neither Jasmine or Alan seem to be connecting emotionally. It stands out more because of the dance that it followed. Nigel enjoyed the choreo, and Alan’s strength. He thinks they could have been quirkier and enjoyed the dance more (I agree). It felt, to me, like they were just performing steps. Mary loved the big lift in the number, and compliments Alan. Erin tells them to let their hair down. Paula compliments the choreographer. She also thinks they needed to have more fun.

5) Jenna and Tucker- Hip Hop by Keone Madrid- Dangerous by Michael Jackson
Jenna thinks people will mistake her for Comfort. This dance take a while to build up. Not great choreography, very 80’s, and slow starting. This isn’t doing either of these dancers any favors. That being said, are they really going to cut the OTHER female ballroom dancer? Mary thought it was different, and thought it was more jazzy. Mary thought Jenna annihilated it. Erin loves Jenna. Paula says it was a nice tribute to MJ. She calls Jenna a movie star. (based on these comments, Jenna isn’t going anywhere). Paula says she enjoys Tucker in the competition. Nigel says Jenna reminded her of Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face. Nigel said it was one of his favorite routines.

6) Malece and all-star Marko- Contemporary by Sonya- In The Embers by Sleeping At Last
Sonya tells Malece it’s like she’s on sleeping pills. lol. She’s got a great partner. Beautiful lighting, set design, costume design. This is a great routine, and for the first time, I think Malece danced it well. Finally, she’s an adult. Standing ovation from the judges. Malece has arrived finally as a contender. Maybe Nigel will stop hating her. Erin says she’s been dying to be in Sonya’s presence. She’s a huge fan of Marko. She calls Malece like Tinkerbell, she just floats. Paula thanks Marko. This was Paula’s favorite routine. She calls Malece “poetry in motion”. Nigel hopes Jade heals, and tells him to keep dancing. He thinks Marko brought something out in Malece he’s never seen before. He says that she was finally a woman tonight. Mary agrees that Marko brought something out in Malece. Mary knew that Malece would eventually have a moment on the show. lol. If you keep her on enough, and throw her some good choreography, it’s inevitable.

7) Hayley and Curtis- Samba by Jean Marc
Jean Marc says the difficulty is an eleven. It I’m being honest, while I think Curtis is doing a commendable job, I think Fik-Shun out danced him earlier in the night with the Paso Doble. Curtis just doesn’t move like a ballroom dancer. Hayley looks great. Curtis looks like a boy, not a man. Paula thanks Jean Marc, and thinks Hayley nailed the hips. Paula thinks Curtis raised his game, but he needs to work on being more grounded, and work on controlling her. She’s still impressed because he comes from tap. Nigel thinks Hayley dominated Curtis, and he needs to step up and be the dominant one. Nigel says that he came off a little young, and Paula agrees. Mary says Jean Marc didn’t hold back, and Curtis needs to work on his feet, but Mary loved Hayley. Hayley has lipstick on her teeth. lol. Erin tells Curtis to take the critiques and work on it, and calls Hayley a vixen.

8) Alexis and Nico-Broadway/Jazz by Spencer Liff- I Put A Spell On you by Nina Simone
Alexis is hypnotizing Nico. Really good choreography that told the whole story. One of the better routines of the night, but not quite my favorite. Nigel compliments Nico on his pirouettes. He thought it was tight and together, and an interesting routine. Mary says Alexis hypnotized her. Nigel makes a joke about Mary finally being silent, and Paula starts punching Nigel. lol. Mary was shocked Alexis was in the bottom. I think Jasmine is going home, ya’ll. Alexis and Jenna just got different comments than Jasmine did. Erin comments on Nico’s gorgeous turns.

9) Mariah and Bluprint- Hip Hop by Luther- Bring the Noise by MIA
The two hip hop dancers draw hip hop on their first week together. Mmmmhmmm. Sure. They should also buy a lottery ticket, cause these two are going to hit the jackpot. This is a fast routine at first, slows down in the middle, then just sort of gives up. This could have been so much better, it was just aight. Mary needs more performance in the face from Bluprint. She loved Mariah. One level down from ill. Erin loved the routine. Erin said Mariah looked effortless. Erin also needs more facial expressions from Bluprint. Paula loved the energy in the beginning. She says that he’s really good, but she thinks he’s holding back. She thinks Mariah’s personality was times 10, and covered for Bluprint. Nigel loved Mariah’s personality. Nigel talks about Benji and Sabra who he believes won because of personality, beating better dancers (Travis and Danny).

BLUPRINT- 1-855-GO-HIM-09

I’d have an impossible time predicting the bottom 3 guys/girls, because I wouldn’t have predicted those guys/girls this week.

That being said, I’ll go with: Tucker, Alan, Curtis (Bluprint as an alternate shocker) for the boys, and Jenna, Mariah, and Alexis (with Hayley as an alternate shocker).

Results: Jade is the boy going home, we know that already.

Bottom 3 Girls: Alexis, Jasmine M, and Jenna.
Jenna steps forward first. She’s safe. Everyone was unanimous that she deserves to stay. Jasmine M steps forward next. The choreographers think she has self doubt. Alexis steps forward. He says the choreographers give her the same notes over and over. Nigel has Jasmine M step forward again, she’s going home.

ELIMINATED: Jasmine Mason and Jade Zuberi
Alan will be dancing with Malece next week.
