A new episode of Survivor 44 airs tonight on CBS. Read a live recap here.

The episode begins at the Soka tribe. It’s the morning after tribal council. We hear a confessional from Josh. He believes he’s in the middle of two alliances (Matt & Frannie and Danny & Heidi). He thinks he’s sitting in the swing vote position. However, the other four are united against Josh. They are prepared to blindside him if they return to tribal council.

At the Tika tribe, they notice some red sticks inside the birdcage that look like an X. They’re confused. It is revealed in her confessional that Carolyn put the sticks there to make someone find the fake idol. She put two smaller red sticks near the fake idol she planted. Later, we see Sarah find the fake idol. She believes she is in possession of an idol, but it’s actually fake and has no power.

It’s time for the reward challenge. They must use slingshots to launch sandbags to hit a series of targets. Each player on the tribe must hit at least one target. The two tribes to complete the challenge will win a tarp reward. The winning tribe also decides who goes on the journey where advantages await. The challenge begins. Danny, Carson, and Brandon each hit a target for their tribes. Heidi and Josh each hit a target for Soka, putting them in the lead. Lauren hits for Ratu while Carolyn is struggling to hit a target for Tika. Matt hits for Soka and then Danny hits for Soka again. Soka wins reward! Carolyn finally hits a target for Tika. Jaime and Matthew hit next for Ratu before Sarah hits for Tika. Brandon hits the last target for Ratu. Ratu wins reward! Soka decides Josh, Carson, and Jaime will go on the journey.

Josh, Carson, and Jaime meet each other on the journey before they each take a different path. They are all presented with the same note. They each receive a hidden immunity idol. However, this idol loses power once the tribes merge. In addition, they must draw a buff and go to a new tribe.

Josh is now on the Tika tribe. He meets his new tribe members. They ask him if he’s a surgeon, which he denies. He lies and says he’s a physical trainer. The Tika tribe overheard him say he has steady hands for his job during a past challenge. They see through his lie, and they don’t trust him.

Carson arrives at the Ratu tribe. He tells his new tribe members that Yam Yam is running the Tika tribe with Carolyn. He wants his new tribe members to underestimate him. Later, Matthew speaks with Carson and shares how Brandon already played the birdcage idol. He tells Carson that Jaime has a hidden immunity idol, but he doesn’t let him know that it’s a fake idol.

Jaime greets her new Soka tribe members. She believes she is in possession of two hidden immunity idols, but she doesn’t know one is actually fake. The original Soka tribe members were united against Josh, so they are on board with voting Jaime out too. However, they’re concerned Jaime could have a hidden immunity idol. Danny decides to look through Jaime’s personal belongings to find out if she has one. They don’t find it, but Matt points out she could have decided to keep it with her at all times.

It’s time for the immunity challenge. One at a time, a tribe member must dive into the ocean, climb up a tower, leap off and grab a key. Once they have the key, they must go across a balance beam. After all the tribe members go across the balance beam, they must unlock their puzzle pieces and solve a puzzle. The challenge begins. Soka takes the early lead. After Lauren fails to grab her key, Ratu falls behind. Brandon has to go back and retrieve another key. However, after Yam Yam drops his key, it allows Ratu a chance to catch up. However, Kane is putting Ratu behind again. Carolyn is the last to get a key for Tika, but Kane is struggling with the balance beam. This allows Carolyn to surpass Ratu. Soka already solves the puzzle shortly after Ratu and Tika finally get started. Soka wins immunity! It’s a very close finish between Ratu and Tika. Ratu places all their pieces before Tika does. Ratu wins immunity! Tika will go to tribal council tonight.

Tika returns to camp after the immunity challenge. Josh is the target, but the other three tribe members are concerned he could have a hidden immunity idol. Yam Yam decides they need to make Carolyn the decoy target to make Josh feel comfortable. Josh doesn’t trust Yam Yam and Sarah, but he believes he can trust Carolyn. He confesses to Carolyn he has a hidden immunity idol. He tells her he will play the idol for her if they both vote for Sarah. Carolyn is torn what to do. She says Yam Yam and Sarah have not made her feel comfortable as part of their group. She doesn’t like being told what to do or instructed to be the decoy target. She is contemplating turning the tables by telling Josh to play his idol for himself while they vote Sarah out of the game.

It’s time for tribal council. Jeff asks Josh his thoughts about the twist. Josh says he was shocked. He says he was in a good position at Soka, but now he’s at the bottom of the barrel at the Tika tribe. Sarah says Josh could be valuable moving forward due to his connections at Soka. Yam Yam says it’s cool to have a new friend on the tribe, and he could be better than any existing connections. Carolyn feels slighted. Sarah says Carolyn misunderstands what Yam Yam means, but Carolyn feels like she’s on the outs. She thinks Yam Yam let it slip that he doesn’t care about her. Josh is glad the focus isn’t on him, but he admits it could be a charade to confuse him. Jeff notices uneasiness on Carolyn’s face. He tells her to give her pitch to stay on the tribe. She says she’s been on the tribe longer, but Carolyn’s uneasiness is not about whether she’ll be voted out tonight. Based on what the audience saw before tribal council, she seems to be nervous about her own vote. Afterwards, it’s time for the vote.

Before Jeff reads the votes, Josh plays his hidden immunity idol for himself.

Jeff reads the votes. The first vote is for…

Josh

Josh

Sarah

Sarah

Sarah is the fifth person voted out of Survivor 44.

And that wraps up tonight’s episode of Survivor. Thanks for reading, and come back next week for another live recap.
