With Nicole Scherzinger leaving the NBC reality competition show The Sing-Off for a flashier judging gig over at FOX on Simon Cowell’s X Factor, the peacock network had a spot to fill on the underrated singing competition. Via New York Magazine
Taking Nicole’s seat will be singer/songwriter Sara Bareilles (Love Song). She’ll join fellow iconoclast Ben Folds and Boyz II Men alum Shawn Stockman on the judges’ panel when the show begins it’s 3rd season on September 19.
I’ve got to say, even without hearing her judge a thing, she’ll be a big improvement over the empty-headed Nicole. Plus, I like the idea of indie types taking over the The Sing-Off. She and Ben could be a very interesting team! Shawn has experience singing a’capella himself, with Boyz II Men, so I think we’re looking at a solid trio of talent here.
For those of you unfamiliar, The Sing-Off features A’capella groups from around the country singing sans instruments for a chance at a recording contract. The show features some of THE BEST singing you’ll hear anywhere, and I was thrilled when I heard The Sing-Off would be moved out of the pre-Christmas dead zone it inhabited its first two seasons into a prime fall slot, keeping Mondays warm for The Voice until that show returns to NBC mid-season.
Sources tell New York Magazine they had plenty of interest from established performers. With the big boosts competition reality show judging has given Blake Shelton and Jennifer Lopez, it’s no surprise artists are lining up for the gig. Sara had one hit song, “Love Song” in 2007, I’m sure she’s hoping television exposure will bring back her past success.
