From Marc Berman – The ratings for last night’s Rising Star premiere were disappointing. It trailed the new episode of America’s Got Talent NBC scheduled against it by double digits. The ratings weren’t the only thing that was lackluster for the new ABC singing competition. I expect the ratings to only get worse, as word of mouth on this show won’t be great.
Note: Due to the live nature of “Rising Star,” overnight debut rating results (and the upcoming preliminary fast affiliate numbers posted at the TVMI website) are approximate for the new ABC singing competition. ABC has special ordered true Fast National Ratings from Nielsen for “Rising Star” with time-zone adjusted numbers, which will be released later today.
With that in mind, the opening overnight results were not positive for “Rising Star” on ABC. “Rising Star” scored a lackluster 3.2 rating/5 share in households from 9-11 p.m., which trailed competing “America’s Got Talent” on NBC (#1: 5.1/ 9) by a hefty 37 percent. Among adults 18-49 (based on 25 markets), “Rising Star” averaged a 1.4 rating/4 share, which was 30 percent below the 2.0/ 6 for “America’s Got Talent.” Although “Rising Star” did build from the 8:30 p.m. portion of the season-premiere of lead-in “Wipeout” (Households: 2.6/ 4, A18-49: 1.2/ 4) by 23 percent in households and 17 percent in the demo, NBC deserves the accolades for scheduling a Sunday edition of “America’s Got Talent” opposite it. Given all the hype, this is very disappointing for ABC. “Rising Star” half-hour breakdown:

The preliminary ratings for the series premiere of Rising Star garnered a 1.5 adults 18-49 rating, down 12 percent from the premiere of ABC’s most recent summer talent show, Duets, on May 24, 2012.
