Phillip Phillips: “Home” Is Not My First Single!

Phillip Phillips is a singer/songwriter, as American Idol mentor, Jimmy Iovine continually reminded us in his post-performance results night critiques. As such, the newly minted Idol winner is making it clear that his coronation song, “Home,” is NOT his first single!

“I don’t write songs like that,” he told reporters of the Greg Holden-Drew Pearson-penned track. “It’s a very good song and I’m glad people enjoyed it, but I’m itching to do my own stuff.”

Phillip took it a step further in a post-win interview with Hollywood Reporter correspondent, Didi Benami,

“The song that I did tonight that supposedly is my single, it’s not really my single, I told them it’s not my single.” Phillips explained that his passion for lyrics and music trumps even the best pitched pop song. “I have my own stories to tell,” he said, “[But] I couldn’t do my song [on the finale]; we just didn’t have enough time.”

Alrighty then! He ain’t mad that his fans are digging the song, however.

“I’m really glad people like the song,” said Phillips. “It’s a great song but I’m still ready to do my own thing.”

As far as his own album, Phillip revealed to reporters that it would be a a mix of “some acoustic stuff” with a “jazz and rock alternative sound; not really rock-rock — pretty different.”

Are you microwaving the popcorn yet?  Pulling out the lawnchair? “Cause I sure am!  The battle of the “True Artist” vs Jimmy Iovine and UMG has just begun! A virgin Mai tai for me, por favor!
