American Idol 11 winner Phillip Phillips independent single “Dancing With Your Shadows” climbs Hot AC airplay charts

Congratulations to Phillip Phillips for garnering airplay for his independent single “Dancing With Your Shadows” from his new album, Drift Back.

Without the benefit of a major record label–he’s an independent artist-Phillip’s single just hit No. 19 on the Mediabase Hot AC chart, and No. 30 on Triple A. Just for fun, I took a peek at a local Boston Triple A radio station’s playlist, and indeed, 92.3 The River is playing the song at least once a day, alongside his recurring 2012 smash hit, “Home.”

When the American Idol season 11 winner got close to the Top 20 milestone on Hot AC, he didn’t ask fans to bug radio stations with requests. Instead, he posted to social media asking them, “Let’s get Dancing With Your Shadows to TOP 20 on the radio!” He added, “Share with your friends, make your whole office listen, force your partner to make a Tiktok…but most importantly, TAG ME! Link in my bio to listen on your preferred streaming platform! LET’S DO THIS!”

In the video clip he refers to his “team” who have been “working really hard.” Whomever he’s hired to help him get “Dancing with Your Shadows” on the radio are getting it done.

When “Dancing With Your Shadows” reached No. 20 a week later, the singer-songwriter celebrated. “Top 20 on the radio!!!,” Phillip crowed, “Only independent artist in the top 20 and I couldn’t be there without every single one of you! Lets keep going together!”

Phillip thanked his fans for helping him reach No 19 on Hot AC Airplay

Yesterday, he posted another Instagram video thanking his fans for helping to reach his goal, “Top 20!!! And just moved to #19 today!! So awesome! Thank you all so much!!!”

Phillip’s coronation song “Home” was a massive hit in 2012, reaching No. 1 on Triple A, Adult Contemporary and Hot Adult Contemporary charts. It reached No 6 on the pop chart. “Gone Gone Gone” in 2013 rose to No 1 on Triple and Hot AC. “Raging Fire” from 2014 slipped to No 6 on Triple A, No 7 on Hot AC. And from there His 2017 song “Miles” and 2018 “Miles slipped out of the Top 20.

After Republic Records dropped him after his 2018 album Collateral, it was hard to imagine him charting again without a major label. If he manages to reach the Top 10 on Hot AC, that would be an incredible accomplishment. Can Phillip crack the Triple A Top 20?

For those who aren’t familiar with radio formats, Hot AC is upbeat pop songs, but without hard rock or hip hop. The Triple A format is rock and indie music, but without a hard edge.
