Nigel Lythgoe Lays Out More Changes to So You Think You Can Dance Season 7

So far, here are all the changes to So You Think You Can Dance 7, tweeted by executive producer, Nigel Lythgoe @dizzyfeet:

  1. First rule change. Only one dancer will leave the competition each week and not two. Many more changes to come by the end of this week.
  2. Another rule change for SYTYCD this coming Season. The partners will change every single week.
  3. This Season will not have a top 20. The pieces are falling into place. More tomorrow. (this one was supposed to shock us)
  4. CHANGE-The competitors will no longer choose their genres of dance. I’ll explain everything before the SYTYCD Press Conference on Monday!
  5. No top 20! No choosing genres! Only one goes home each week CHANGE – Less than 4 compete in the Finale! Fox reveals all the changes tomorrow

Nigel says there will be one more change, “Of course there’s still one more exciting and awesome change that links together the other small changes and makes sense of the entire show.”

DANCE CAPTAIN DANCE ATTACK: Ben Heaves Away with COME FROM AWAY's Josh Breckenridge!

Everything will be explained in a press conference on Monday.

Sounds to me like there will be fewer dancers competing on the live show, and the judges will have more control over what genres the dancers perform (although, I always believed that pulling dances out of the hat thing was rigged.)

Also, the finale looks suspiciously like the American Idol finale. What do you guys think.  It’s always good to tweak a show that’s been on the air for awhile. But I hope Nigel hasn’t tweaked it too much…

  1. Is having a 2-person finale really that bad? The 4-dancer finale always struck me as kind of odd, personally. It always seemed like there was SO MUCH going on in the finale, with the focus being spread on too many people, that it didn’t even seem like the finale.

As for the other changes, I similarly don’t mind them. I kind of liked the 2 eliminations/week at least to start, but I really could take or leave it.

Disclaimer: last fall’s SYTYCD was the first time I watched a season in its entirety, but I’ve been a fan of Idol (and, subsequently, that format) for years.

  2. My only concern is whether they will fit Jakob Karr into the fall tour with this season’s batch. To not include him would be just plain wrong.

  3. I kind of like the idea of a 2-person finale. I thought having 4 was ok, but 6 not so much. MJ I kind of agree with you about the too many changes could be a little too much for some viewers. I am glad the show is returning back to the summer this year though.

  4. Where does it state that there will be a two (2) person finale? Just as easily could be three (3) and that’s how I believe it will be.

  5. Has it been stated by Nigel or anyone here, how they are going to only eliminate one dancer a week, when they dance in pairs? Did I miss that?

  6. The amount of changes has me wondering if it’ll be like S8 of American Idol, which ended well but was overall pretty “cheap” because of those changes.

Still excited about how these changes will play out, I like a little bit of spice and nonsexual experimentation in my music reality shows, even if it doesn’t turn out well.

…I didn’t really need to qualify that as “nonsexual” experimentation, I just…. felt like it >_>.

  7. I hope the next rule change explains how only one will leave per week, yet they will still be partnering up.

I suspect there will be a 3 person finale. That would be cool.

  8. First, as a fan, I like changes 1) and 2) above. If the voting gets “messed up” for a week (like this year when Lilly, Alex and Katelyn went home), then at worse we’re losing only 1 dancer and not 2. Also, I hated the fact that weak dancers would be paired with strong/popular dancers and make it to Top 10/tour when they shouldn’t have.

I think the reason they had a 4 person finale in the past was to get the proper number of dances to fill an hour show without overworking the dancers (even though they’re probably overworked anyway).

With 4 people, they each danced with all other dancers, plus did their individual dance. That meant 4 individual dances plus 6 pair dances, for a total of 10 dances. However, each dancer danced only 4 times maximum.

If you take away the 4th dancer and have only 3 contestants in the finale (which is what I think will happen), then they have 3 fewer dances in total with only 7 total dances(assuming they add one dance with all 3 in it), yet the dancers are each dancing 4 times. I’m not sure how they would fill an hour with only 7 dances.

I honestly don’t think a finale on this show would work with only 2 dancers. There is no way the two of them could continuously dance to fill an hour show, unless they fill a portion of it of flashbacks from the season, which is something that is usually saved for the results show.

I guess we will have to wait to hear from Nigel on how all of this will work, but I do like changes 1 and 2 so far.

  9. I’m curious about what is behind the changes – are they trying to shorten the season without the fiasco of a final 6? just freshening things up a bit? increasing the group dances? (great – my favorites are the groups). Maybe everyone does the same genre every week? or there are more solos? Hope it works – the fall SYSYCD wasn’t great and it would be a shame for the show to loose profile now.

  10. I hope these changes will make for a better season rather than a shorter season!

  11. So will SYTYCD follow the lead of Dancing WTS and have “pros” paired up with the contestants. The clues kind of point that way. Besides…that will showcase “past” contestants as well as current and be double the viewer whammy….peeps do have their favorites from years past.

I hope not. Then peeps voting for their favorite ‘pro’ will mess things up.

Change number 4 is pretty funny. We haven’t seen that on the US show for quite some time. Not many people believe there was anything random anymore. Whereas, Australia and the Ukraine still show the dancers picking partners and/or genres out of a hat live. Maybe it was spurred by the ‘complaints’ that Melissa never got Hip Hop – but somehow was able to randomly get a pas de deux. Might as well drop the farce of the random genres.

  13. Yes, we do have our list of absolute favorites. How can you block them out when voting for a new contestant. I am anxious to see how this goes!
