Nigel Lythgoe Confirms Mia Michaels So You Think You Can Dance Departure

It’s official, Mia Micheals is leaving So You Think You Can Dance. Executive Producer Nigel Lythgoe released a statement praising her work on the show.

“We are thrilled to have given a talent such as Mia Michaels a platform to create Emmy Award-winning choreography, ” Lythgoe said. “During the auditions this season she has helped choose the best, most diverse top 20 we have ever had. She knows that she is always welcome to return later this season or next.”

Late Wednesday night, Mia tweeted her goodbye, “I am officially an adoring fan of So You Think You Can Dance…Thank you for 5 wonderful years.”

Mia’s bold choregraphy was an integral part of the show.   She’ll certainly be missed.

  1. Oh, that stinks. I don’t think that there’s been a season since I started watching that my favorite dance wasn’t a Mia Michaels dance. And I usually don’t like contemporary. Boooooooooooo!

  2. I still say there has to be one helluva back story on this. Something happened. Just look at the wording on Lythgoe’s statement: ‘We are thrilled to have given a talent such as Mia Michaels a platform to create Emmy Award-winning choreography.’ He’s reminding her (and everyone else) that SYTYCD helped accelerate her career. I for one will miss Mia’s work more than Mia herself. She sometimes pulled a John Ford ‘“ going after one of the dancers relentlessly ‘“ and for no good reason (Jessica anyone?). But her choreography can’t be beat. A good portion of my favorite SYTYCD routines were done by Mia Michaels. I hope she knows what she’s doing in leaving like this. At least Nigel left the door open for her to come back at any time. Idol producers closed the door so fast on Paula I’m surprised she didn’t end up with screen imprints on her ass.

  3. I’m sorry to see Mia go and hope she’ll return, even as a guest choreographer, at some point. She could tick me off with her commentary but the kids always loved working with her and seemed to get a great deal from it and she sure put on some outstanding work! Really too bad. I hope it is because she’s got a terrific job!

  4. Yeah, Mia’s routines were some of my favorites every season, so I think this is a big loss. I too think there is some kind of behind the scenes story to this that we’re not hearing. But best of luck to her.

Travis Wall tweeter last night that he’ll be choreographing a routine on top 20 week. So there’s a contemporary choreographer that they might be turning to more this season. I’m betting we see Stacey Tookey & Mandy Moore too a lot this season. And Sonya, of course.

  5. i loved her choreography but could not stand her attitude on the judge’s panel. Although i will miss her talent, i certainly wont miss her.

  6. Great, maybe I can actually watch the show now!

She’s a terrific choreographer, but her voice, cackle and ludicrous babbling “Hot tamale train!” (really???) were beyond annoying.

  7. If the show lasts more than this season, I’ll bet she’ll be back. As a choreographer, you don’t get that kind of tv platform or the *Emmys* that go with it from any other show these days.

On “Hot tamale train!”, downeast. I’m afraid you’re going to be disappointed because that’s Mary! And she’s firmly planted in her chair, apparently!

I do kind of love that Nigel noted they chose the most *diverse* group yet this season. Yay for that — I love contemporary, but it’ll be great to see tap, crunk, and ballroom dancers in the mix, too, and thus maybe some more variegated choreography.

  8. I won’t miss her at all, half the time she’s been on the panel she’s seemed whacked out or hungover, maybe she’s going to rehab or something.

going after one of the dancers relentlessly ‘“ and for no good reason (Jessica anyone?).

I remember that plus her OTT nasty comments to Brandon during last season’s auditions, nope I definitely won’t miss her but I have a feeling she’ll be back at some point.

  9. Yes, she could be unduly harsh (Brandon, Jessica, Mark) but she also was enthusiastic when she loved a dancer, and usually came around (Mark, BRANDON). She was just opinionated unlike, say, MARY (I was desperately hoping SHE would leave). And she was in the Top 3 of choreo (Wade is also there). She will be missed, as much as I love Adam Shankmann. Damn. Something fishy is going on/went well (or she’s ill), and I hope she returns next year.

  10. She is a wonderful choreographer who really makes you feel the dance, I will miss her on the show

  11. She’s a terrific choreographer, but her voice, cackle and ludicrous babbling ‘Hot tamale train!’ (really???) were beyond annoying.

Ha, you’ve created some sort of Mary/Mia hybrid monstah! Lololol.

I guess I’m one of the few who will seriously miss her judging. Sometimes I’d think she was off base and it made me see red (Mark, Natalie in Season 2, poor Jessica) and sometimes I thought she was fearlessly dead on the money (her original critique of Brandon, IMO….I was actually sad that she backtracked) but she always had that potential to speak her mind, popularity and party line be damned. I’m not saying she wasn’t part of the script, but you know, you just never knew for sure. With Mia, Wade, BFree and Dan Karaty banished from the judges table in succession, we are left with Nigel and his lovable yes maan Shankers, wacky sidekick Mary, and Tyce, who plays the mean card without anything really insightful to say. I feel like some of the authenticity has left the building with Mia gone, and it’s going to get even more AI-ish with the pimping et all. *is sad*

Does anyone know the status of Wade? He was sorely underused last season, and I couldn’t help but notice that they didn’t pick any of his pieces to highlight in the finale.

  12. Her choreography to me was the best on SYTYCD. I wish her the best. I don’t typically follow dance, but she was ahfreakingmazing! I actually loved her judging because I typically felt she was honest. I never had to agree with her to think she was honest. There’s so many out there judging that have agendas. I guess I just don’t feel she had anything other than her opinion at stake.

  13. So. Much. Word, sunchick. To every word of your post.

Like you, I have a feeling the pimping and manipulation this season is gonna rival AI. Even though I didn’t agree with him, Adam DID have a prior disagreement with Nigel over a dancer (Danny, anyone?). But I can’t really remember anything since then.

We better have more Wade this season. How many couple pieces did he do last year? Just the crash test dummies and bank robbers? And he did two group dances, but still.

I hope they have some new choreographers to introduce into the mix this season. Because if it’s a season full of NappyTabs & Tyce with two routines each every week, they’re gonna lose me quickly.

  14. I guess I’m one of the few who will seriously miss her judging. Sometimes I’d think she was off base and it made me see red (Mark, Natalie in Season 2, poor Jessica)

Yeah, these were just too much for me, I’m afraid. She annoyed me so much with these things that, even when I would periodically *think* that “yeah, Mia’s right on with that” or “that’s an interesting point of view,” I would flash back to what seemed to me her completely irrational blind prejudice against a few of the dancers, and I just couldn’t admit that I approved of anything at all she said!

That said, I would way way rather have Mia than, say, Tyce, for example. At least she has the dance chops to back up her arrogance.

  15. I hope they have some new choreographers to introduce into the mix this season. Because if it’s a season full of NappyTabs & Tyce with two routines each every week, they’re gonna lose me quickly.

That’s the main reason that I’m actually not too sad to see her go. I’d like to see some new blood on the show. There are other fabulous choreographers working in the world right now, besides the 5 or 6 Nigel likes to use all the time.

Tyce is super annoying, and his broadway choreography is old and stale. I actually don’t know what Nappy/Tabs’ choreography would be called, but it sure as hell isn’t hip hop. They can try to make it seem like it by calling it lyrical hip hop or whatever. But it’s really just choreography that a bunch of untrained high school girls would come up with for the annual talent show. 3 pseudo-hip hop moves in a 90 second dance do not equal a hip hop routine.

  16. If that list is true, they’re right about versatility on the guys’ side, but the girls’, not so much. But, several of the ones I’ve liked thru auditions and the Vegas rounds are on that list, so I can’t complain too much.

Spense, I definitely agree they need to feature new choreographers, but IMO, Mia was not the one to lose. Tyce would’ve been my choice. We need a new Broadway choreographer, stat!

  17. Mia and Wade were my favorite choreographers. Their numbers were always a highlight for me. Sometimes Mia could get a little crazy with her criticism, but I think she is extremely talented, and I will miss her choreography.

  18. OMG, is this list TRUE???

I’m hoping. *Way* more variety than, like, ever. Should help to push into more various choreography, I’d hope.

I would agree that Tyce would be my first pick of choreographers to lose, too.

  19. OMG, PLEASE tell me that Mia’s replacement won’t be Paula. Could this be one her “opportunities”? Nigel likes her…..

  20. I wonder if making Adam Shankman a permanent judge has anything to do with it. The timing is suspicious to me.

  21. Mia herself bothers me, but I love her choreography, so I am sad to see her go. But lots of Stacey Tookey (I haven’t seen her work on SYTYCD Canada, but I loved “Falling Slowly”) and Travis might make up for it. Too bad it wasn’t Tyce who left.

  22. There’s no doubt Mia is a terrific choreographer, but I didn’t always agree with her judging or the harshness of her words. Yes, get some new blood in the rotation.
