Monday Morning Mediabase Update: May 9-15

Six milestones to report in this Monday Morning Update.

Idol’s Carrie Underwood climbs into the top 15 on Country this week with “Church Bells”. It is her third single from her fifth studio album “Storyteller”. All of the singles from this album has achieved at least top 15 (and the others went to the top of the chart – expect “Church Bells” to too). Also on Country, Jordan Rager from The Voice goes top 40 with “Southern Boy” – a duet with Jason Aldean.

On AC, Zayn from X-Factor UK achieves his first charting solo single in that format. “PillowtalK” enters the chart in the top 50 meaning that he is charting on all 3 mainstream formats. His former band, One Direction” returns to the top 30 in that format with “Drag Me Down”.

The Sing-Off’s Pentatonix achieves top 40 on HAC with “If Ever I Fall In” featuring Jason Derulo. This is their second single from the self-titled album and the second original song from them to reach top 40 on HAC.

Finally, over on CAC, Mandisa (9th on the 5th season of Idol) goes top 40 with “I Hope You Dance”. Idol auditioner Lauren Daigle continues to top that chart with “Trust in You”.

BB reports that Drake holds at number one for a second week (219K in equivalent albums – 175K in pure sales, -79%/-79%)). “Views” becomes only the second album this year to sell more than 1M albums (Adele’s “25” was the first). Beyonce also continues at number 2 with “Lemonade” which had 202K/153K (-27%, -22%). Radiohead has the highest debut of the week with a “Moon Shaped Pool” (181K/173K). This is their 6th top 10 album and their best selling debut since 2003. Their last album was released in 2011 and opened with 69K, so there is an improvement. It was released on Sunday which is later than the new traditional Friday (which starts the tracking week).

Former Idol Judge Keith Urban pulls the “Ripcord” to open at 4th (106K/93K – previous album opened with 98K). Prince’s “Very Best of Prince” is 5th (77K/65K, -17%/-17%) while his “Purple Rain” is 8th (43K, -43%). Cole Swindell’s “You Should Be Here” opens at 6th (76K/65K), Rihanna’s “Anti” is 8th (48K, -7%), Adele’s “25” is 9th (41K/34K, -47%/+52%) and Christ Stapleton’s “Traveller” is 10th (31K, -2%).

Last week, Drake held the top of the BB200 and Hot 100. Can he repeat this week? Justin Timberlake is challenging for the top of the Hot 100. “Can’t Stop the Feeling” has a commanding lead in sales while “One Dance” has a commanding lead on streaming. Radio is a bit of a draw.
