Monday Morning Mediabase Update: Jul 30-Aug 5

While last week was slow and lazy, this week, the Idols et al have donned their racing shoes and raced up the charts. Lots of milestones to discuss.

Let’s start with original recipe Idol, Kelly Clarkson. Her third single (“Dark Side”) from her fifth studio album (“Stronger”) went top 10 on Hot AC. This is a strong format for Kelly and her previous two songs from this album went to the top of the chart. Can “Dark Side” go number 1 as well?

Over on Country, we have three milestones. Casey James from Season 9 looks to be the most successful on radio from that season. His second single from his debut album has achieved top 30 on the Country chart. “Crying on a Suitcase” is moving up the charts much quicker than his debut single which is nice to see. Meanwhile, Scotty McCreery has backed into a top 40 song. While “Water Tower Town” has been losing spins for the last couple of weeks, it still managed to move up the chart (thanks to recurrents). This third single is underperforming for Scotty and is a definite disappointment. Meanwhile, his runner-up from Season 10 looks to have a much more successful third single teed up. “Eighteen Inches” wasted no time getting into the top 50 on Country and is sitting not far behind WTT at 42. If this single is successful, it may revive the album and have program directors looking forward to her next album.

The final American Idol achieving a milestone this week is Michael Lynche, also from Season 9. His “Who’s Gonna Love You” has achieved top 50 on AC. This indie release is also top 30 on UAC.

From Canadian Idol, Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” has moved up to top 5 on the AC chart. The song is top 5 in two formats, top 10 in 3 and top 20 in 4.

Chery Lloyd, from UK XF, has gone top 40 on HAC and appeared in the top 50 on Rhythmic. The song is charting in 3 formats.

Meanwhile, is it wrong for me to be pleased that JLo’s out of season single appears to be tanking? “Goin’ In” featuring Flo Rida is tumbling off the Pop charts. Some of these judges think they are gifting these shows by agreeing to be on them. They consider themselves to be the stars of the show. They have all sorts of conditions, hock their products, snag performance slots and then make outrageous salary demands. I don’t have a problem with people being paid as much as they can get, but if JLo’s career stumbles after she priced herself out of range, I hope that serves as a wake up call to present and future judges. So that they appreciate the chance to be on the show and realize that they are in the same boat as the contestants (here to try to get a career boost). I think these shows work largely because of the contestants and how they get the audience invested. The judges contribute as well, but if they keep in mind that they are replaceable and the show is a benefit to them, maybe they will bring their “A” game every day.
