Mariah Carey Struggles to Sing in Tour Opener

Maybe Mariah Carey was just having a bad night? Bad timing though. Because the OPENING NIGHT of the ex-American Idol judge’s Elusive Chanteuse World Tour, in Tokyo Japan, revealed several “vocal malfunctions.”

In the video below, Mimi is off-pitch at times. She’s unable to reach that whistle register that put her name on the map. At one point, a mic stand broke and she lost her place in the song.

Could it be jet lag? Opening night jitters? Impending divorce from Nick Cannon weighing on her mind? There has been evidence that the singer’s voice isn’t what it once was. But that’s a normal function of age. Take the songs down a few keys and rely less on that whistle register. Mariah wouldn’t be the first singer to have to change her approach to an aging voice.

It’s a little tougher for Mariah, however, as she’s KNOWN for her incredible range and stratospheric upper register. But she has contributed so much to pop music already, I think her fans would forgive her if she had to scale the vocal gymnastics back. It’s better that she sing on key, rather than sound terrible (and a little pathetic) attempting to hit notes she can no longer reach.

Mariah’s latest studio album was released in May to the lowest sales numbers of her career for a non-holiday set, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
