Katy Perry Sesame Street Controversy

Well…there really is a reality show connection here!

Katy Perry has been a guest judge on both American Idol and X Factor UK, is BFFs with Adam Lambert, and her fiance Russell Brand had a mini-feud with Idol winner Jordin Sparks!

As most of you know, Sesame Street producers will not be airing the cute Katy Perry/Elmo duet “Hot and Cold” on Sesame Street. The classic children’s show decided to pull the clip in the wake of complaints after the duet was posted to You Tube.

The issue is Katy’s cleavage. As if kids have never seen a boobie before. I think it’s a ridiculous. Katy’s dress actually covers her body up to her neck, although part of the dress is sheer. Still, cribbing from a You Tube comment: “I’ve seen Disney princesses dress sluttier.”

This morning, a producer from Sesame Street defended the choice to pull the clip to Good Morning America’s George Stephanopoulis.  Bits are pulled, she claimed, if there are enough parent complaints.  For instance, after Chris Brown was accused of assaulting his girlfriend Rihanna, a clip the accused R&B star shot was pulled.

Elmo, dropping by to chat, said he loved “Miss Katy” and invited her back to play.

Katy tweeted, “Wow, looks like my play date with Elmo has been cut short! If you still wanna play see it at www.katyperry.com Tag you’re it, Elmo!, ” and her fiance, Russell weighed in, “today’s Sesame Street will NOT be brought to you by the number 34 or the letter D.”

See the clip and the GMA interview after the jump.  What do you think? Was Katy’s outfit inappropriate? Or are the parents who object overreacting?

  1. It’s a scary world out there when such cute video of Katy Perry looking like a modern day Cinderella gets censored for a dress that shows less than kids see on any beach (or walking down the street, for that matter). I just don’t get it!

  2. “I’ve seen Disney princesses dress sluttier.”

The little mermaid wears effing seashells. SEASHELLS.

  3. We watched this in my Sociology of Pop Music class!! My professor said all it takes is one angry parent to phone the network under the alias of some organization to be taken seriously. He also said another issue was the shot of elmo running around Katy with her legs showing. I don’t know. Throwing a hissy fit over it is still pretty WTF if you ask me but whatever.

I think the clip should have been pulled because of Katy’s horrible lip-synching :)

  4. Really when the under 5 crowd sees a boobie.. they think lunch. The problem is most likely with the parents who have their minds in the gutter.

  5. I think the clip should have been pulled because of Katy’s horrible lip-synching :)

LOL! She wasn’t very good at it, was she?

another issue was the shot of elmo running around Katy with her legs showing.

Just ridiculous! There was nothing inappropriate about that video whatsoever! No more of her legs showed than if she were wearing shorts. Parents who are overprotective of their children to such an extreme are more hazardous to their kids, IMO, than seeing a little cleavage and bare legs.

  6. Miss Piggy is way more showy.

And yeah, Disney Princesses are way sluttier. They always pretend sleeping just to score a kiss from the Prince. And don’t get me started with Snow White and her 7 miners. (LOL)

  7. Aww at least they had a sense of humor about it. You can’t really blame parents of little ones to not want to see Katie’s boobs, but the seashell argument is a good one ;) Russel Brand cracks me the hell up.

  8. I think the clip should have been pulled because of Katy’s horrible lip-synching

That was pretty wretched. Poor Katy, can’t sing live; can’t lip-synch. No wonder she tries to get everybody to look at her boobs

Miss Piggy is way more showy.

Well, in her defense, she’s a pig. It’s a lot harder to try to cover up 10 boobs.

  9. I don’t even see why they would have her on Sesame Street. Her image and her music isn’t appropriate for kids.

  10. I don’t even see why they would have her on Sesame Street. Her image and her music isn’t appropriate for kids.

Tell that to the creators of Alvin and the Chipmunks and Kidz Bop.

  11. Hmmm….Sesame Street is getting a lot of publicity out of this. That was a big segment on the GMA show and half of it was pimping their new season.

    Hmmmmmmmmmm…………

  12. That was pretty wretched. Poor Katy, can’t sing live; can’t lip-synch. No wonder she tries to get everybody to look at her boobs

Yeah, poor Katie. Gorgeous, nice body, sells gazillions of records, and getting married to one of the funniest guys on the planet. If only she could sing like SuBo ;)

  13. She is a shit, anyway. What about streaking in the park, skinny dipping in the dark, menage a trois? Little kids will ask their parents what they are. haha.

  14. i dunno. i’m with the parents on this one. yes, one could argue that disney princesses are sluttier. the thing is, katy perry has major boobies. the 80’s and were simpler times when censorship wasn’t as strict as it is today.

i’m with kris on this one. what’s to stop a kid from youtubing “katy perry elmo” and having i kissed a girl, california gurls, and teenage dreams as related videos?

Tell that to the creators of Alvin and the Chipmunks and Kidz Bop.

20th century Chipmunks or 21st century Chipmunks? there’s a HUGE difference. how you can NOT love this classic? :p

  15. Really when the under 5 crowd sees a boobie.. they think lunch. The problem is most likely with the parents who have their minds in the gutter.

^^This. Exactly what I thought yesterday when I first heard the story. And that was BEFORE I saw the video. Gaah. Don’t really care for Katy Perry as a singer, but America’s puritanism really grates sometimes.

  16. I think it is a cute video. Perhaps her dress is a little low cut for some parents, but obviously the staff at Sesame Street didn’t see anything wrong with it as they filmed her wearing the outfit.

  17. it’s not a biggie in my opinion but this pre school children show is educational by definition and doesn’t include a sexyness element. I think the decision is fine not because it should be censored but because it should stick with the format it uses usually. On this one, i call the producer’s bad judgement; it would have been so easy to use a dress more to the standards of the show.

  18. The little mermaid wears effing seashells. SEASHELLS.

    They’re weightless A-cups tho.

I watched. the side shot is fine, but front on, it’s kind of bare. I think it’s fine for the Sesame Street audience, toddlers, and I don’t think it would have been a problem if they’d just aired it. The age that shouldn’t see it is 10 to 14. Fighting the slut look with a pre-teen or young teen is really a bear (or a “bare” ha ha). They don’t get at all why you can’t bare your breasts like Katy, or wear panties as summer “shorts” like Lady Gaga.

  19. Don’t get the uproar from parents at all. Do they not take their kids to the beach, to the checkout line in a grocery store, or as has been mentioned, watch any Disney films? What is wrong with people that they are so offended by the human body that seeing no more skin than is seen on the cover of a magazine would be deemed inappropriate for kids? The fear people have about sex(which has nothing to do with this segment, but is being dragged in by the censors) and the human body in this country is just staggering.

  20. I think it’s all really funny – especially Elmo “saying” he had fun and hopes to have another playdate with Katy, and Russel Brand’s tweet – all WIN for Katy, who is riding an incredible wave of WIN right now. Even though I have not loved her last two big songs much and didn’t like the “UR So Gay” dedication, I can’t help but smile at this whole thing.

  21. Oh man. It’s two and a half minutes! I have two daughters under 5, and they watch Sesame Street. If this clip actually had aired and they saw it, they’d move on as soon as another character came on the screen. Kids don’t think about the sexual aspect of something like this; parents do. America is pretty prudish if something like this is getting censored. JMO.

  22. When I saw the video days ago I did wonder about the outfit because of the many culture war flash fights PBS has faced over the years. Also it would have been easy to make the dress a little more modest but still be in the Katy Perry style. So I believe that Sesame Street and Katy Perry got exactly the reaction they were expecting, perhaps even hoping for. Also have you seen the True Mud video? What does that have to do with preschoolers?

  23. Well played Sesame Street. What a way to stay relevant, have a faux break up with the delightful Katy Perry and her not so delightful, but interesting as hell fiancé Russell Brand. Loves it! I really didn’t see why anyone would be alarmed, and this country continues to mystify me that one bellowing, blow-hard could put the kibosh on this cute duet is beyond me. Anyway, they knew who they were inviting, and I say Sesame Street needs a little sexin’ up. How the hell do you think you get all of those new viewers year in, year out?

  24. i dunno. i’m with the parents on this one. yes, one could argue that disney princesses are sluttier. the thing is, katy perry has major boobies.

So does Barbie and she is in toyboxes all over the country. You can even undress her if you like. Also keep in mind that according the skit, she was in “dress up clothes” to play dress up for a playdate.

what’s to stop a kid from youtubing “katy perry elmo” and having i kissed a girl, california gurls, and teenage dreams as related videos?

Uhm, their parent? My 5 year old isn’t allowed to surf the net unsupervised.

  25. what’s to stop a kid from youtubing “katy perry elmo” and having i kissed a girl, california gurls, and teenage dreams as related videos?

Uhm, their parent? My 5 year old isn’t allowed to surf the net unsupervised.

Hell if my 3 year old is smart enough to be typing Katy Perry on the internet, I’d say go for it, lol.

  26. She’s covered fine. Some parents have dirty, dirty minds :D

When I saw the video days ago I did wonder about the outfit because of the many culture war flash fights PBS has faced over the years.

I still remember when they fired the poor host of “The Goodnight Show” because she made a satrical video that mentioned sex years before. LOL. Parents are crazy. I know because I am one, and some of our tribe are nuts.

  27. *rolls eyes* only adults have a dirty mind, the kids only see a pretty princess. And again, only those adults with that dirty mind see anything inapropriate in this clip.

  28. Yeah, poor Katie. Gorgeous, nice body, sells gazillions of records, and getting married to one of the funniest guys on the planet. If only she could sing like SuBo

Well, Katy might be able to sell as many albums as SuBo if she could sing ;-)

(And I think I’d rather deal with SuBo’s cat than deal with Russel Brand. I think there would be less exposure to hairballs ;-)

Katy is doing great with her career and she is gorgeous. She can’t sing though, so it is hilarious to see her on AI and X-Factor (or was it BGT?) and being “all about the singing”. She should know what an irrelevant part of the biz that is if you want to be a pop star. I can’t stand SuBo, but the lady can sing better than Katy. Katy is better at writing the hooks, though. And I suspect more men want to see Katy in barely-there clothes than would want to oggle SuBo. Katy has her niche. SuBo has hers.

Now, I am left to wonder what SuBo would sing on Sesame Street. Surely, they have a song she can cover.

  29. So does Barbie and she is in toyboxes all over the country. You can even undress her if you like. Also keep in mind that according the skit, she was in “dress up clothes” to play dress up for a playdate.

well adults have different POVs than kids. “like a virgin” was the first thing that popped into my head when i saw her in her dress up clothes. my initial thoughts were: A) WTF is katy doing on sesame street? B) WTF is she wearing? her boobs are gonna bust out any minute! C) her “singing” is atrocious. maybe it’s my disdain for katy that’s fueling me to defend the parents…

Uhm, their parent? My 5 year old isn’t allowed to surf the net unsupervised.

then you’re one of the better parents. not all kids are lucky :)

Hell if my 3 year old is smart enough to be typing Katy Perry on the internet, I’d say go for it, lol.

    baby geniuses. it’s not just a movie…haha!

  30. well adults have different POVs than kids. “like a virgin” was the first thing that popped into my head when i saw her in her dress up clothes.

But why should a parent’s thoughts about something the kids are completely unaware of impact a decision to air something like this or not?
The objection about a child googling Katy on the ‘net doesn’t quite make sense to me either. If she had worn a dress with a higher neckline, this segment wouldn’t have been yanked most likely(since that was the stated objection), but Katy’s other work would have still been out there for them to look up.

  31. I still remember when they fired the poor host of “The Goodnight Show” because she made a satrical video that mentioned sex years before.

OMG, my son was heartbroken, what the hell was her name? Melanie? He loved her and *poof*, she vanished. Heh. Alas, my kids are now too old for Sprout and instead want to watch NickToons. While I’ll admit my guilty love for “The Troop” and “Avatar,” I HATE that Dragonball show and my 7 yr old adores it. Luckily they only get to squish in a little TV time and even if he picks it for his show he watches in the evening… it doesn’t last long.

Now as for Katy Perry and her boobies, I don’t know if there are some worldly kids out there or what but my kids (7 & 5) wouldn’t even notice her boobies. They don’t care about boobies yet. At all. Some mom probably got mad that her husband was ogling ;)

Parents are crazy. I know because I am one, and some of our tribe are nuts.

Oh, yes. I coach both of my kids’ soccer teams and… wow. Some of these parents. I had one mom email my league director that her little butter bean was “in danger” at our last game because someone shoved him. Too bad said butter bean was doing all the shoving FIRST. Bleh.

  32. LIttle children know more than we realize. True story — my 4 year-old son (now 45!) used the word sexy in a sentence. I told him not to use words when he didn’t know what they mean. He replied that he did know what sexy meant. When asked what it means, he replied, “Raquel Welch in a bikini!” He knew the concept of the word, even though I hoped not all that it implies…didn’t dare go further with the questioning.

  33. Now, I am left to wonder what SuBo would sing on Sesame Street. Surely, they have a song she can cover.

I suspect something from Cats :)

The little mermaid wears effing seashells. SEASHELLS

And don’t even get me started on that hoochie mama Tinkerbell- you think she is wearing grannie panties under that thing she calls a dress? Hell, the paparazzi don’t even have to bother trying to film UP her skirt like they did with Katy- it’s all out there for the world to see. Slut.

  34. OMG, my son was heartbroken,

    Mine too! He cried.

Some mom probably got mad that her husband was ogling ;)

That was the first thing that popped into my head too. :)

He replied that he did know what sexy meant. When asked what it means, he replied, “Raquel Welch in a bikini!”

BBWWWAAAHHH!!!! My 6 year old, when she was still 5, put on her princess costume and told me she looked “sexy”. I damn near hit the floor. Turns out she thought it meant “pretty”. I told her it was a way grownups told each other they looked good, but not kids. That worked. For now. Yikes.

She learned the word on Disney, of course. I hate the Disney Channel. Suite Life of Zack and Cody must die!

  35. I can’t believe I’m typing this, but I kind of agree with pulling the spot. The dress does show a huge amount of cleavage. A woman showing that much anyplace other than a club or a beach would get some sideways glances, to say the least. But I think the real issue is when she’s running around, her “girls” get quite the workout right along with her.

It’s really too bad, because the song is pretty cute. It would have been simple to have her wear a dress that wouldn’t have been a problem.

  36. I just watched that video with my 3 year old watching with me. I stepped out of the “OMG, what is she wearing?” mindset and watched it from an educational viewpoint and it really is an educational segment. Teaching kids the opposites. Hot/Cold; In/Out; Yes/No; etc. My child didn’t say, “Oh look, mom. Boobies.” LOL?!!

    With all that said,

But why should a parent’s thoughts about something the kids are completely unaware of impact a decision to air something like this or not?

1). Kids know more than we realize or give them credit for. and 2). It’s kinda refreshing to see some segment of society taking parents concerns seriously. For the past several years, it seems society has tried to minimize the parents role of caring for their children and have tried taking over. While I personally don’t have an issue with this Katy Perry segment, some parents did. I’m certainly not gonna lose any sleep over this being pulled.

  37. So, I just showed my daughters the clip. My four-year-old thought it was “funny and cute, but Mom, the words are different!” and my two-year-old liked “that girl. She sings funny!”. Not one mention of boobs, but they did want me to play it again for them.

  38. That really doesn’t look that suggestive to me. Women have breasts, get over it. She isn’t showing her bare nipples lol.

  39. (And I think I’d rather deal with SuBo’s cat than deal with Russel Brand. I think there would be less exposure to hairballs

    ROFLMAO!

  40. The whole “what about the children” mindset in this country is outta control!

And in the end, it shouldn’t be about what adults would think about or feel when they see someone with a not-particularly-revealing princess outfit on — it’s about what a young child would think about and feel when seeing that clip. And frankly, they would not be thinking, ooh, I am so turned on, or damn, my girls don’t look like that! They would probably think, oh, what a pretty princess. And . . . hey mom, is it lunchtime yet?

  41. the boobs don’t bother me but her image does. i don’t think she should be included in a show for this age group. keep the kids kids.

  42. Miss Piggy is way more showy.

Well, in her defense, she’s a pig. It’s a lot harder to try to cover up 10 boobs.

Hahahaha! Kristen, you are killing me!

  43. If she’s going to dress and act like a little girl, I can see where parents might not want their daughters to emulate her choice of attire. It’s great if she wants to be a sex object, but is that what we want our little girls to imitate? Or our sons to value? I don’t know why Katy couldn’t have just chosen a more appropriate costume for this performance. She already altered the lyrics of the song.

    And 34D? I don’t think so. More like a 32B in a push-up bra.

  44. Katy’s dress isn’t any different than what most figure skaters wear. They also use illusion fabric to keep things modest. Yeesh, you’ll see more skin walking down your average American street than what Katy showed.

I wouldn’t have thought twice about it until this controversy. And now, more kids will see this clip than if those pearl-clutching parents had just let this slide. It’s going to be all over TV for the next few days, meaning lots of children may wind up seeing it, anyway.

The only argument to be made is that Katy’s image as an over-sexed Barbie doll doesn’t mesh with the whole Sesame street mantra. But there’s nothing wrong with her dress.

  45. And 34D? I don’t think so. More like a 32B in a push-up bra.

That’s exactly what I thought. Russell has been lied to…or “glamored”. Sorry, I am watching True Blood.

  46. This is the funniest dammed thread I have read in a long time.

I’m happy not to see Katy Perry anywhere, even on a show I gave up when my son ourgrew it. She does have mahonchous boobs.

America is in conflict. Katy Perry is indecent, but on Bachelor Pad they stick the camera on the inner thighs of women wearing no underwear. Go figure.

ETA: Oops, that would be shorts without underwear.

  47. The only argument to be made is that Katy’s image as an over-sexed Barbie doll doesn’t mesh with the whole Sesame street mantra. But there’s nothing wrong with her dress.

Yes, I don’t think there is anything wrong with Katy’s dress and people reacting to that are being over the top, but I can see the argument about how her whole choice in persona off the show isn’t appropriate. It isn’t about how sexy she prefers to dress either. If it was Beyonce or Christina Aguilera I would feel better about it. They are great examples of strong women in control of their sexuality. Katy Perry just reinforces tired old misogynistic ideas about the sexualized girl who is only here for the objectification by men. On top of that, Ur So Gay is just an awful song. It is filled with stereotypes of gay men, and reinforces the notion that the worst thing for straight man to be considered is gay.

  48. America is in conflict. Katy Perry is indecent, but on Bachelor Pad they stick the camera on the inner thighs of women wearing no underwear. Go figure.

And on Glee next week, actresses pretending to be teenagers will be jumping around in skimpy costumes in homage to Britney Spears, who was on the cover of Rolling stone wear a bra and panties before she was 18. America has some passive-aggressive issues when it comes to sexuality.

  49. 1). Kids know more than we realize or give them credit for.

What kids pick up on is their parents’ reactions. It’s not possible for them to pick up on the fact that the vid reminds the parent of Madonna, but they will pick up on a parent’s discomfort watching. That’s more about the parent’s hangups than it is about the kid’s reactions to boobies, which as many have stated, would be a non-reaction.

  50. This I agree with – I have more problem with Katy herself and what her example stands for. What she’s wearing? I just can’t see what the big deal is.

  51. Is this a fucking joke? It’s 100% inappropriate material for a toddler show, and I’m glad it got bagged. The last thing we need to do to our already fucked up society is start bringing pop-culture tits and ass to Sesame Street.

    Sincerely,
A father with kids, ages 3 and 5

  52. Not that I think this is a huge deal, but would it have killed her to cover up a little bit for a show watched by a bunch of toddlers? Hello! What were they thinking?

  53. This thread is cracking me up! LOL! Personally, I thought that Katy and Elmo’s duet was very sweet and cute, and I didn’t have a problem with Katy’s attire (or lack of it) or think that it was inappropriate for kids. I watched the interview on GMA with the SS EP and Elmo, and I think that the EP was surprised at the complaints from the parents over the duet. It was also very savvy and clever the way SS used their airtime to promote the show.

  54. The top has gotta go! I love the skit but I think the outfit is just too revealing and I’m very glad SS is pulling it.

  55. Probably the best promo that Katy Perry could have gotten from this appearance — too sexy for kids and an invite back for another play date with Elmo.

Plus, Sesame Street is getting a lot of press.

And parents are happy that SS listened to them.

Looks like a rare win-win-win to me.

  56. Time for a slippery slope fallacy! I kinda like these even if they are totally wrong.

Okay, Disney princesses dress worse (All Ariel wears for a top are those damn SEASHELLS.), children are exposed to WORSE and turn out perfectly fine. At the rate parents are sheltering their kids, we’ll never have sex education, people will wear the thickest chastity belts ever seen that NOBODY will be able to unlock, the word “revealing” will be used when a woman’s pinky is the only thing exposed, and since there’s no more reproduction, humanity will end, and it’ll all be because some parents thought Katy Perry was a bit too slutty in a not extremely revealing dress. It scares the hell out of me, the end is all I can see.

I think that massive slippery slope fallacy explains how I feel about this.

I think it’s just “oversheltering”. I don’t think the parent should shelter the children that much from the taboo subjects (Granted, parents shouldn’t expose them to those subjects either, and I don’t think Katy Perry’s outfit counts as a taboo subject), but instead teach them maturity about these subjects, otherwise you get these sheltered kids who go all out when they discover… things.

….Now that I read this, I would think that if it were Beyonce or Christina Aguilera, this wouldn’t have been pulled from Sesame Street. Katy Perry seems to have this overly sexual image that the other two don’t have, and her dressing even the slightest bit revealing would be much worse than the other two. Then again, I don’t really know Christina Aguilera’s image.

I also hope someone noticed the Muse lyric I slipped into my rant :D.

Personally, I don’t have any issue with Katy Perry’s appearance on Sesame Street, but I have a feeling it was her image that got this pulled, not just her appearance.

That’s interesting. I’m pretty uninformed about Katy Perry, so I watched the video without knowing about her “sexual image”, and thought that it was fine. My opinion was formed on just the video and didn’t take into account any background info on Katy.

  58. I think it’s cute, the video is fine. Parent’s response to the top is the problem here, not what kids will think.

I disagree about 32B, because the girl does have some girls, Russell is probably right. She’s got them quite covered up, minimized and contained, all things considered.

    http://ll-media.tmz.com/2010/03/31/0331_katy_perry_splash.jpg

As for Christina? She’d be fine on Sesame Street too as long as she left the dominatrix outfit and ball gag at home ;)

Sometimes I feel like this country has regressed and not progressed since the Reagan era.

  59. Being a parent of a toddler, I can’t imagine my toddler being affected by this duet in any way.
That said, IMHO, Katy Perry and Sesame Street don’t go together. So, for me (for you), the issue is Katy Perry in Sesame Street.

  60. The whole “what about the children” mindset in this country is outta control!

I’m not taking a stand on the Katy/Elmo thing (except to say that it’s a bit odd for a show that used to feature “Sing” (encouraging us to not worry that it’s not good enough for anybody else to hear) now features one of the Autotune Queens (let us hear how crappy she really sings so that we too will be brave enough to sing)), BUT…

Isn’t a show aimed at 3 year olds one of the contexts where the argument “what about the children” might be relevant?

  61. In addition to the cleavage, she looks like a prostitute. It’s fucking Sesame Street. Would it KILL people to dress appropriately for different things.

She wouldn’t wear something that covered up her chest to the VMAs so she shouldn’t wear something that revealing on Sesame Street.

  62. Isn’t a show aimed at 3 year olds one of the contexts where the argument “what about the children” might be relevant?

Yup, it’s very relevant, but this kerfluffle isn’t about the kids at all – it’s about Mommy and Daddy’s reaction to her as what they view as a sexual being. The children would see a girl dressed up like a princess bride running and singing with Elmo.

  63. I don’t like Katy Perry or her music but seriously she is completely covered. My kids would have been attracted to the head piece she is wearing and not noticed any thing else.
If parents have a problem with what she stands for cause of her music or lyrics then they should be complaining to Sesame Street about that. The clothes—no.

  64. If it was Beyonce or Christina Aguilera I would feel better about it. They are great examples of strong women in control of their sexuality.

We´re talking about that Beyonce the explore her sexuality to the fullest and always shows up in videos shaking her ass right?

  65. Ok, is it just me or does the screenshot on the video above (where she’s standing with a surprised look on her face) look like a katy perry “Real Doll”?

  66. In addition to the cleavage, she looks like a prostitute. It’s fucking Sesame Street. Would it KILL people to dress appropriately for different things.

Seriously? I just don’t see that what she’s wearing is in the least bit inappropriate. Maybe it’s because I have a pair of “girls” of my own that make hers look just pretty ordinary, but the way I’ve always seen it, about half the population has my body parts, and about half the population has those other parts. I’ve just never understood why body parts that are shared by all of humanity have to be smushed and camouflaged and generally scorned. I’m not saying we should flaunt our nekked selves for all to see, but she was perfectly covered in a really pretty dress with really just, IMO, a lovely amount of cleavage showing. As a preschool teacher, I can tell you, those kids watching Sesame Street aren’t even looking. They’re infatuated with her beautiful smile and sweet voice. Kids that age don’t see things in any way sexual. They’re sweet, innocent and find and appreciate beauty the way we all should; In their lovely world, kindness is beautiful and our exterior “packaging” is immaterial and unnoticed.

  67. Society today is sorely lacking Morals. If you think it is not, you are one of the problems. Blue jeans and T-shirt would have been better.

  68. Society today is sorely lacking Morals. If you think it is not, you are one of the problems. Blue jeans and T-shirt would have been better.

Actually, I do sometimes see a lack of morals in society, however, I don’t think Katy Perry wearing a really beautiful dress with netting nearly to the neck and a delicate top-line that hints at her femininity is immoral. Now, the comments I see in articles about any number of our entertainers? Many of those are so hateful they’re scary, and to me, THAT’S immoral.

  69. Well I just looked at the videos & whilst in the photo I thought Katy’s dress was okay when she ran around she was flopping all over the place [ just like Serena Williams does with no bra on the tennis court] so I can understand that parents thought for Sesame Street it was not appropriate. However I wouldn’t put it past Katy that she wore this dress as she knew it would cause a stir – so she would get more publicity[ just like she did initially with I Kissed a Girl & UR So Gay ]. She is the queen of knowing how to get attention!!

Katy apparently came from a strict religious upbringing & so seems to have “broken away from the apron strings” so to speak. I don’t believe cutting children off totally from the secular world of entertainment works but parents have the right to voice when things do seem inappropriate. My children are in their late teens & early 20’s now & I used to sit down with them for certain programmes to explain anything where they had questions but we didn’t have music videos showing until they were teenagers as you never knew what was going to come on. I think this Katy Perry’s video would be the same- you expect Sesame Street to be a safe environment for children – so I think that’s where the parents were coming from.
So next time Katy- wear a bra & you might not flop so much!!lol!!

  70. This probably makes me sound like an old fuddy duddy, but I’m not surprised they ended up cutting it and I don’t blame them. I like Katy fine and I think the performance is cute, even charming. But know your context, Katy. I don’t know that I would have been so incensed as to complain about it if I had a child, but I do think it’s inappropriate for a children’s show. Sure, there are exceptions and greater violators, but I’d probably think they’re inappropriate, too. It shocks me more that she didn’t actually think about this more (or maybe she did?). She seems brighter than that.

  71. Not that I think this is a huge deal, but would it have killed her to cover up a little bit for a show watched by a bunch of toddlers? Hello! What were they thinking?

As a daily viewer of Sesame Street with my Grandchildren, I have to ask the same question. What were they thinking? The minute Katy showed up with that dress, the director should have politely asked Katy to find something a little more modest to wear. She insulted the show, and the director insulted the parents. This clip never should have been filmed. Period.

  72. (Unable to add to post.)

Destiny’s Child performed a remake of “A New Way to Walk” in 2001. It is such a catchy tune and one of my favorites. The little ones love to dance to it. Beyonce was in the group, and they dressed appropriately.

  73. She models her style/shtick to look like a blow up doll. Not surprising people don’t find that appropriate for children. And I don’t think you can compare flesh (and a lot of it) and blood real people to cartoon characters like the Disney princesses.

Having said that, can’t imagine caring enough to complain about it. She looks like Wonder Woman.

ETA: does she even know the words to that song…her lip syncing is atrocious.

  74. Her dress was very inappropriate. It’s kinda like having your mom take you to school wearing daisy dukes. Not cool.. and I don’t care how slammin’ your body may be.. plain old inappropriate and lame.

  75. Do any of the folks complaining about Katy Perry’s cleavage also point out that her skirt is perhaps a bit too short as well? No? Well I guess they’re too pre-occupied with her chest. As others have mentioned, the toddlers only see a pretty princess dress.

Really, the cut of the dress is pretty standard fare for wedding gowns these days (see Google images for wedding gowns).

  76. Well, I’ve been to a number of weddings recently and I’ve never seen that much chest at any wedding I’ve been to or heard about that wasn’t held in a Las Vegas chapel.

Again, the context isn’t a wedding. I think that’s what keeps getting lost here. The context is Sesame Street. Big Bird. Oscar the Grouch. The Cookie Monster. Elmo. And, yeah, I guess some parents would like that little space kept safe for the toddlers from cleavage. Doesn’t seem too much to ask to me. And as has been stated, how little effort it would have taken for her simply to have worn a t shirt.

  77. Here’s what I think — I think the parents complaining object to Katy Perry more than they object to her attire. If Taylor Swift had been in that short, yellow dress, I don’t think many would have made a peep. It’s the “I Kissed A Girl” Katy with her racy California Girls video that make parents sensitive to her appearance on Sesame Street. Personally, I think she’s kind of trashy, and I don’t mind that she’s not singing to toddlers on Sesame Street.

  78. omgoodness! I love Katy Perry! I read about this in my local newspaper.

I would love for her to sing to my toddlers. All they would get out of it is that she sings great songs and she is a pretty lady.

edit: Remember Charro any one??? How do you explain that!!!!

The whole topic cracks me up. :)

I don’t get how she is trashy! She is gorgeous and smart and a California girl! :)

  79. Probably half of the mommies complaining have had boob jobs, so what the heck.

It’s not a Katy Perry problem (she is innocent and sweet) compared to all of the other freaky celebrities.

  80. I hate more than anything terms like “parents co-view”. Gahhhhhh….. I can’t stand that stuff.

  81. Just sayin, interesting point but I disagree. Let me state I have no problem whatsover with Katy or Cali Gurls or whatever, blah blah blah. (sidebar: snooze, I hate that song) You are right in a sense. Had Taylor Swift appeared on Sesame Street singing that song with those lyrics with Elmo it wouldn’t have raised much of a fuss. Here’e the thing. I don’t think TaySwizzle would have showed up on set in that get up. So it wouldn’t have been a problem. And your point would be moot. I may be wrong. But I’d kinda bet my life savings on that.

Again. Context people. I have no judgment at all about Katy Perry wearing whatever or nothing or my ultimate nightmare while performing this song. BUT on THE iconic children’s show, it does not surprise me parents might want her to cover up more of her tits. This does not surprise me and, frankly, I support the parents for wanting to sit with their toddlers in front of the tele with bowls of apple jacks and milk and not be confronted with sex ed. Let’s at least put it off until 3rd or 4th grade.

  82. I cannot understand how this little bit of flesh can harm a toddler, they won’t think anything of it.

  83. first, it is a very cute clip albeit katy being an Awful actress. However, i do like them pulling it back a notch. it’s not that her outfit is sensational, i wouldn’t even look back at her wearing the dress had i seen her wearing that in the street. it’s just that it represents a general trend of wearing less and less for more and more attention (and often, less and less content and depth). i am a burningman kinna girl but i still feel that pop culture and esp children shows should maintain certain boundaries. in my country all boundaries were broken with outfits, kids shows, etc in the 90’s dramatically influencing the “next generation” so to speak. now, we have huge violence problems in schools and artificial means are being taken to maintain minimal dignity in that regard.

  84. Probably half of the mommies complaining have had boob jobs, so what the heck.

LOL Too True! I live in a part of the US with latin and european influences and LOTS of skin showing, but i know in some parts of the country parents won’t allow their daughters to wear bikinis. Anyhoo, I pretty much think Katy Perry’s latest music sucks, but i like Hot n Cold – AND I couldn’t help but think that she just looks like a cartoon character come to life with those big eyes and open mouthed expression. I thought it was hilarious.

  85. I’m wondering if a good portion of the parents complaining are fathers.

You know, it must be awfully embarrassing to suddenly develop a boner while watching kiddie TV with your toddler. lol.

  86. Katy Perry has def sexualized her image with her recent videos so I think that’s more the problem than this particular outfit. Katy’s trying to have it both ways doing lots of kid stuff but also posting semi-nude etc. It’s not just about the boobage shown here.

  87. I’m wondering if a good portion of the parents complaining are fathers. You know, it must be awfully embarrassing to suddenly develop a boner while watching kiddie TV with your toddler. lol.

And I’m wondering if a good portion of those who support T&A on Sesame Street are lonely, bitter, aging, childless women with cats.

  88. If that clip had aired when my kids were Sesame Street age it wouldn’t even have crossed my mind to be upset by it. In fact if I’d watched it without knowing the controversy I would have just thought it was cute and I’m not even a fan of Katy’s. I do think the low cut dress would have been objectionable with someone who actually does have cleavage unlike Katy (or me, lol).

Having said that they should have known it could be a problem since they’ve been doing this show for decades. It would have been easy to ask her to come up with a different, more modest costume.

  89. Katy Perry has def sexualized her image with her recent videos so I think that’s more the problem than this particular outfit. Katy’s trying to have it both ways doing lots of kid stuff but also posting semi-nude etc. It’s not just about the boobage shown here.

Then this whole thing is on whoever produces Sesame Street, not Katy Perry, because if that’s the case, they shouldn’t have invited her on the show in the first place.

The princesses stuff is a very good point – go see The Little Mermaid show at Disney and Ariel is wearing her little bikini top and mermaid suit. And no, it’s not animated, it’s a real person. And she’s definitely not flat-chested.

  90. You can see a lot of Katy Perry’s flesh on display anywhere, so why does it need to be on Sesame Street? I think parents trust the show to be 100% wholesome, and appropriate for young children. Especially today, when kids are being exposed to a lot of questionable stuff in pop music and the media.

She’s self-aware, she must have known what she looked like in the dress. I don’t think a little modesty would have hurt. To use an old saying, there’s a time and a place for everything. This wasn’t the time or place for that costume.

  91. You can see a lot of Katy Perry’s flesh on display anywhere, so why does it need to be on Sesame Street?

Well that’s the problem, isn’t it? Some people are looking and seeing “lots” of flesh and don’t understand how anyone else can think its okay. Some people are looking at it and not seeing lots of anything except a girl and a muppet. Its all about perspective I guess.

I mean, I keep TRYING to see all this extra boobage and I just don’t. In fact, after seeing that picture of Katy Perry in a bikini, I think she did a pretty good job of minimizing the girls for children’s TV. LOL. She looks 2 cups sizes smaller with Elmo. Heh.

  92. I’m guessing Elmo couldn’t keep his eyes off her cleavage.

Dear Katy, when guesting on a children’s show, dress a bit more appropriately. I appreciated it but I don’t think parents would appreciate bouncing boobs on Sesame St. Thank you.

  93. I raised young ones in the 1970’s and 1980’s; now I am caring for young Grandchildren. The more I saw the clip, the more I think this was a set-up for publicity!

Did anyone see Katy on Saturday Night Live? She had a cute outfit on, white blouse, tie, and red sparkly skirt. Although the skirt was short, it was typical cheerleader style. Now, I would NOT have objected to THAT outfit!

Elmo has stated that he will have another play date with Katy. Wait until you see the ratings when the clip appears on Sesame Street. This was planned.

  94. I was a child in the 1970s. This seems tame and the protests are lame

    .

Do you remember hotpants, Pj? I don’t think there was cleavage but women and girls wore them very short.

I don’t think this is so much about morals or lack thereof but Sesame Street reacting to a certain number of parents who complained about an outfit. It happens all the time in life and while not comparable it reminds me of school libraries banning certain classics because of parent complaints. I’m all for keeping your kids from certain shows, movies, or games that you don’t feel are age appropriate but should we get rid of them altogether because of a vocal few? It’s a slippery slope imo.

  95. And I’m wondering if a good portion of those who support T&A on Sesame Street are lonely, bitter, aging, childless women with cats.

That doesn’t even make sense. I would imagine somebody bitter and aging would be hating on a pretty young thing like Katy, not sticking up for her. LOL.

  96. I think it’s so embarrassing that breasts are so offensive to people. What about Miss Piggy? Last time I checked she had quite a rack of cleavage herself! Katy Perry was adorable in that video. The first time I watched it (with my 4 year old son) was before the controversy surfaced. Honestly, neither he or I even thought to mention her boobies. She did a great job and was so cute with Elmo. My son loves her. If I was a little girl, I would like her too! Sad that boobies are ALL people are talking about. It was such a cute parody!
