“Had it All” is better than nearly everything on her post-Idol debut, Katharine McPhee. Maybe Kat’s found a label, Verve, who will do her right. But, that blonde hair? Just. No.

  1. I already bought it. I like it but thought it sounded kind of like a country spin on the song that Kara sang more jazzy.

  2. I like the retro look. Her voice sounds good. I just don’t think the song has a strong enough hook to catch on big at radio.

  3. I don’t like the blonde hair. She is beautiful as a brunette. Usually when brunettes try to go blonde, their coloring is wrong for it and it looks bad. And this is no exception. I guess I don’t understand why such a beautiful woman would make herself look less beautiful (imo). She also looks extremely thin (if it hasn’t been photoshopped) and I hope her bulemia isn’t back, but maybe it’s photoshopped.

  4. Radio is all about money and Verve isn’t going to spend a ton of money on anyone, so I wouldn’t look for any “catch on big” radio hits songs from this album. If that happened it would surprise the hell out me, to be honest.

  5. still very pretty, but the blonde hair looks trashy on her. anyway, the single sounds good.

  6. It sounds really, really country to me! Surprised, but it’s not bad!

The musical arrangement certainly is but Kat doesn’t do a twang…thank gawd.

‘I traded in my comfort zone’ ¦.’

Yep, this was written by Kara.

At least “talent” wasn’t mentioned anywhere and the phrase “package artist” was quite kindly omitted too.

  8. It sounds all right. With her new look, she reminds me of Deborah Harry.

  9. Sounds country to me, too. And, the singer looks like she’s gonna pull a Karen Carpenter. I hope somebody is ready to intervene here.

Did I mention that I hate Kara DioGuardi’s songwriting? Is the most melody-free, hook-less songwriter, ever? Sheesh.

Bring back American Bandstand ratings. “you can dance to it”.

Speaking of songwriting, I heard a gem of an oldie today in the grocery story. Dave Clark Five, Glad All Over.

  10. You didn’t like the brilliance of ‘Open Toes’? Hehe just kidding.

I still don’t get the hair.

  11. I love Katharine but HATE the new look. I know the blonde short look is supposed to make her look fresh and young but it works against everything that was right about her new past look. It does her make her very sexier though. I LOVE the song and her vocals are spot on and impressive. It sounds like she’s more in her comfort zone then the days of “Open Toes” and I don’t hear any of the high notes that so many of her detractors hate. I’m really looking forward to hear how the rest of the disc sound and really feel like she could have a musical career.

  12. I think the blonde is fine but for a limited time only. It’s a kick ass change and I like it. I just want her to eventually go back to what she had, that’s all.

Really good song. And whoever said it doesn’t have enough hook for radio, the minute I listened to Kara’s version of this, the song was stuck in my head – and that rarely happens.

  13. She looks so… weird in the video. The song is okay, but nothing special, but I don’t expect much from Kara.

Well hopefully she’ll find continued success in this label. At least their expectations will be lower and more realistic than RCA.

  14. I loved the song from the first time I heard Kara sing it on youtube and I still love it. But, it really truly does sound like a country song. If it were released to country stations, I can see it getting air play. If it’s released to pop stations, not so much. Now, about the hair…YUCK!!! Some women can get away with platinum blonde but Kat is not one them.

  15. Not feeling it. Though I can’t get past the hair and make-up. What the heck? Most goths have black hair to match the makeup and stuff. This whole vibe just doesn’t work for me. She’s gorgeous as a brunette…she should leave the dark eyeliner stuff to Adam. LOL

  16. Man. She looked beautiful with her old hair. What is she trying to do? I think she looks straight out of the late 90s.

  17. Hope the hair is just a temporay thing..

But most importantly…Love this song! To me sounds kinda like Michelle Branch and maybe a little bit Sarah Bareilles…both of whom I love..

Kat is sounding Amazing …Welcome Back! :D

  18. Generic, countryish sounding song. She seems like a nice girl, I wish her the best, but I certainly wouldn’t buy or listen to songs like this.

And to agree with others here, the blonde doesn’t work for her. She’s stunningly beautiful with her natural hair colour, but her more olive skin tones and blonde just don’t work.

  19. This is very country sounding in my opinion. I like her blonde hair, blondes have more fun!

  20. Very country to me. So this the ‘twangless’ country music Danny has been talking about? ;)

  21. Incredible beauty as a brunette……I did not like her blonde hair at all. The song was awful…..and….I just don’t get her. I have had the hardest time putting my finger on Kat’s style…she is all over the place…like she is trying it all until something sticks. I personally love her looks on AI….as a brunette…. and singing ballads……that is where she wins for me every time!… (And acting….just NO!)
Man I am grumpy this morning……*sigh* Pix

  22. Change is good, so the blonde works for me, at least temporarily.

But did they even spend a dime on that video? Seriously… zooming in and out of a bunch of stills? Maybe because there really isn’t much to work with in the lyrics.

Jury’s in. Kara *may* be useful as a judge, but her songwriting is atrocious. Or at least, it has been lately.

  23. Loved Kat on the show, bought her first cd & totally freaked out – it is the one that collects the most dust!

Can’t get into this single either – dang – haven’t decided if I will buy her cd.

Don’t really know what I was expecting from her but so far I haven’t heard it.

Won’t give a real opinion on her hair……….don’t want to go there. :smile1_tb:

  24. I was hoping for something jazzy, something a bit more mature this time around. I know she is quite young, but I think her voice appeals to an older audience, and that should be her label’s target. I’ll wait to hear the rest of the album. Like MrsB, I loved Kat on the show and still have high hopes for her.

Hair grows out. I don’t blame her for playing around with it. I wish I had been that brave once. I notice it is very short. Maybe she is already planning to go brunette again soon!!!

  25. Did I mention that I hate Kara DioGuardi’s songwriting? Is the most melody-free, hook-less songwriter, ever? Sheesh.

And don’t forget those lyrics. Seriously, is KDG looking for a world record in cramming the most words into a tuneless lyric? And the cliches and psychobabble continue: “comfort zone.”

What ever happened to hanging a song on a few memorable phrases (music *and* lyrics), and poetry? ….

And, no, not every song you write can be genius, but I don’t understand why somebody continues to have a great reputation as a hitmaker when they’re churning out this kind of stuff as debut singles.

Nevertheless, both song and arrangement seem a little more suitable for Katharine’s voice than the stuff on the first album. I still don’t think she’s cut out for contemporary pop, though.

  26. “Blue skies and butterflies” are for girls; “Mountains and hurricaines” are for boys. Yep, it’s a Kara song.

  27. I like the new hair! i think it’s pretty with her fair skin. Blond or brunette, she’s beautiful

  28. Okay, how bored am I to have actually watched that video? Damn bored. I am trying to restrain myself from watching the Phil Stacey one. Eh, screw it, what’s one more? BTW- this song sucked. Yep, Kara D written all over it.

  29. sounded country to me too. good 4 her. i had forgotten what she sounds like.

  30. I’m a long time country music fan and I don’t hear anything country about this song. I guess Taylor Swift really has made the concept of “country music” meaningless to people. Sadface. Or is pop in such a sad state that anything with a melody and isn’t beat driven is considered “country”?

I actually like this. There are some dumb lyrics but it’s catchy pop, sort of Sara Bareilles/Daniel Powter-ish and it’s way better suited to Kat’s voice than the urban dance pop stuff RCA had her doing. If this is the style of her album for Verve then I might actually buy it. I agree with the people not expecting a radio hit. But maybe with a video and some TV and internet promo, the album’ll do well. I’d like for her new album to outsell her RCA one, I feel like it would be the right outcome.

I watched the day one tracking video, that song How sounds pretty good. The little bit of the song from the day four tracking video (Different Things?) sounds good too.

  31. I think it is a good song and she sounds great. I don’t think she looks bad in the blond hair just think she looks better as a brunette.

  32. Don’t like the song – sounds nasally to me. What has she done to her body – looks like death warmed over, and the blonde hair looks terrible. She has a very beautiful voice, is a natural beauty, but I just don’t get the new Kat.

  33. I love the song. Kat’s beautiful voice is out front with great simple production. The song is great simple catchy pop music and it suits hervoice beautifully. I think all those who said her first CD didn’t showcase her incredible vocal talent are in for something really great this time. It has made me look forward to the new CD even more!

Bravo Kat! The new sound is a definite winner. And about the hair I like it, change is good sometimes and its only hair and it has nothing to do with her amazing voice!

  34. Not bad at all. If I had to compare it to another Idol’s music it would be Brooke White. Same kind of tone and vibe.

  35. But did they even spend a dime on that video? Seriously’ ¦ zooming in and out of a bunch of stills? Maybe because there really isn’t much to work with in the lyrics.

It’s a fan made video posted on youtube.

I was familiar with the version Kara sung herself on youtube and I think Kara did it better. But the song is okay.

  36. Or is pop in such a sad state that anything with a melody and isn’t beat driven is considered ‘country’ ?

    Yes.

(And I do agree that this is a much better song and better fit for Kat than most of the stuff on album one. … Still, I can’t help thinking that they could do better.)

  37. Her voice sounds great but the song is just plain boring. I understand that she wanted to go extreme with the change in her look but yikes…not an improvement at all. The pictures are okay but in the video her hair is just awful….it’s like she’s trying too hard or something. Like I said though, she sounds great so hopefully there are some better tracks on the CD.

  38. I wouldn’t call it country, but I expected something more jazzy. I don’t mind the blonde, either. It’s not like she can’t go back to brunette later if she wants.

It’s okay. She has a nice lower register.

  39. Is she going country? It’s has a folksy sound. Interesting.

And that photo? She’s a beautiful woman, but why the emphasis on the protruding shoulder bone? Makes her look too thin. Odd angle shot.

  40. I agree that the song is better than anything on her debut album (though I still like the catchy “I’m Not Ur Girl”). The song definitely has a pop country crossover vibe. I could easily hear Faith Hill or Taylor Swift singing it and I think that Kat is wise to go after that market. After all, if Heidi Pratt is the new face of pop, I’d distance myself from the genre too.

And, for what it’s worth, I like the blonde. While she is drop-dead gorgeous as a brunette, I think the blonde is very dramatic. I am guessing her contract with the Big Sexy Hair line is over, however.

  41. There’s a melody? Kara, stay far away from Adam, Kris and Allison. And Ryan Tedder too!

  42. I hope she doesn’t guest on Idol this coming season, but the Kara connection may come into play. There are a whole list of Idol alums who I would much rather see again.

  43. I didn’t care much about McPhee on AI and her first album, but wow, I really love her voice on this one. The song is good, not great though. And I love her new image much more too.

  44. I hope she doesn’t guest on Idol this coming season, but the Kara connection may come into play. There are a whole list of Idol alums who I would much rather see again.

    Ditto. Thank goodness for DVR.

  45. Her voice sounds really good here. No cringe-inducing runs in her upper register and her lower register has always been beautiful. I don’t know about the song though, I don’t like the chorus much (I don’t think I care for cliche Kara). I do however, like the bridge quite a bit. Her voice sounds really great on that part. I wonder if her voice is distinct enough for her to really have an impact on the music world, or if that even matters.

As for the look, whatever. She’s a beautiful girl regardless of the hair color, although I would not have recognized her from the black and white chain link fence picture if I hadn’t been told it was her. My only gripe would be that she is really looking too skinny.

  46. I hope she doesn’t guest on Idol this coming season, but the Kara connection may come into play. There are a whole list of Idol alums who I would much rather see again.

haha, why? does it really matter that much? i hope there’ll be as many former idols as possible on next season :)

  47. I haven’t listened to the song, but I just have to say two things:
    1. the blonde hair = yuck; and
    2. the girl really needs to eat a burger. Or ten. I weigh about 125 lbs and I’d look like a beached whale next to her.

Edit; listened to the song. I like it. Really dumb video though, and I *really* hate the hair. lol

  48. don’t like the song
    don’t like the voice
    don’t like the look
    don’t like mcphee

    but I did try

  49. All I can say is will the real Kat McPhee please stand up, please stand up, please stand up?!?

  50. Didn’t any of those former idol hear the monstrosity “No Boundaries”? Why would Kat let Kara write her a song and for her to voluntarily sing it, is beyond belief. I know her first album bombed, but is she that desperate. She looks so thin and that blond hair makes her look like some brainless bimbo. She had such beautiful hair and now you can’t even recognize her.

  51. Really dumb video though

    I think it’s a fanvid.

Didn’t any of those former idol hear the monstrosity ‘No Boundaries’ ? Why would Kat let Kara write her a song and for her to voluntarily sing it, is beyond belief.

Kara is a respected songwriter in the biz. One bad song doesn’t change that. Besides, the No Boundaries hate is a bit extreme– none of the past Idol coronation songs were much better.

  52. POPEATER has new interview with Kat up today.(can see via AOL)…Seems she is getting some attention.

  53. I liked Kat on the show. Beautiful, strong vocals, really classy. I never understood how Taylor won over her. This song is OK. Kind of catchy, actually. If it gets any radio play, it should do all right. It’s as good as the next average female pop star song, maybe even a little better.

As for Kara writing it, I agree with this:

“Kara is a respected songwriter in the biz. One bad song doesn’t change that. Besides, the No Boundaries hate is a bit extreme’“ none of the past Idol coronation songs were much better.”

I think NoBo got a really bad rap, partly b/c Adam and Kris were expected to learn it and sing it well in like, two days, or something ridiculous like that. It was certainly better than some of the other schlocky coronation songs that have come off Idol. I will actually confess to liking Adam’s studio version of it, so I don’t think Kara is a total loss as a songwriter.

I wish Kat would eat though. Poor girl, I wonder if her ED is back?
